EVOLVE
Ifor EVs Everyone
t’s no secret that Classic Chevrolet has a vehicle to meet everyone’s needs. Big. Small. Utility. Sporty. Work truck. You name it, Classic Chevy has it for you.
“In the last few years, the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has grown tremendously,” says Robert Valdez, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land’s EV specialist. “So we have them ready, in stock, for our customers now. Our dealership offers three models of fully electric vehicles – the Equinox, the Blazer, and the popular Silverado – all available in different trim levels. We even have a hybrid Corvette for our sports car fans.”
“EVs are generally best for drivers whose commute is less than 100 miles a day, and they live in a house where they can install their charger,” Robert says. “But there are so many benefits you get with an EV.”
“Imagine having a car where no oil changes are required, and you don’t have to pay for gas every week. That’s a lot of financial savings. That’s what you
by Alisha McMillen
get with an EV,” Robert explains. “You get instantaneous torque for a completely different driving experience. The handling and suspension result in a superior drive.”
When you choose an EV Silverado, you get actual trunk space too. “The trunk is called a frunk. There’s no engine so the compartment in front of your vehicle becomes a trunk,” Robert continues.
An EV is powered by an electric motor that draws electricity from a battery and is charged from an external source. There are three ways to charge your Classic Chevrolet EV. Level 1 provides charging through a common residential outlet. It’s slower, but can work with what you already have in your garage. Level 2 is a 240 volt electrical AC outlet, which is just like a clothes dryer prong, and can easily be installed at your home. A Level 3 charger is a high-voltage, direct current (DC) charging station that’s the fastest way to charge your EV.
“All three of our EVs come with Level 1 and Level 2 chargers, so it’s like you have your gas station in your garage every night,” Robert explains. “Different trim levels are available too. For example, The Blazer comes in LT and RS trim levels, and soon, we’ll offer the SS Sport edition, with 595 horsepower and 645 torque.”
“If you’re looking for a lasting vehicle with low maintenance requirements, a great ride, and your choice of trim levels, come out and drive one of our EVs,” Robert concludes. “They’re beautiful vehicles with great power, space, and beautiful interiors, and we have great offers on vehicle leases right now. Together, let’s drive.”
Lifestyles & Living
Experience the Square
By Alisha McMillen
Looking for a fun Valentine’s night? Sugar Land Town Square has you covered.
Start your night with a glass of wine and appetizer at Vino & Vinyl. Head over to art museum TX to see some beautiful art. Have a nice dinner at BB Italia, State Fare, The Rouxpour, or one of the numerous other great restaurants. Pop into Kilwin’s for great dessert options. End the night at Bar Louie, The Flying Saucer, or Baker St. Pub & Grill. You can even have a staycation, spending the night at the elegant Marriott Sugar Land. And you can do it all, from start to finish without having to get back in your car.
“The management company for Sugar Land Town Square, Rebees Management Company, is so progressive,” says Cathy Stubbs, leader of the successful and respected Cathy Stubbs team. “The store fronts and common areas promote experiences – from landscaping to art installations to outdoor seating areas.”
“Living in Sugar Land for almost 30 years, I’ve watched Sugar Land Town Square develop into a beautiful and unique, fun, walkable entertainment area for Fort Bend County residents,” Cathy explains. A Realtor specializing in Fort Bend County neighborhoods for more than three decades, Cathy knows everything there is to know about Sugar Land’s amenities and benefits.
“My husband and I have enjoyed Japaneiro’s for years. It was one of the first restaurants to anchor Town Square, and still provides a great dinner experience every time we go. We still love it,” she continues. Japaneiro’s
Cathy Stubbs
offers a Japanese-Latin fusion menu full of delicious sushi, plantains, ceviche, fried rice dishes, miso soup, steak churrasco – items you don’t often see on one menu together. “There’s a nice patio that’s great for Sugar Land’s mild weather, and there’s even a valet right outside the front door, making it an easy in-and-out if you’re in a hurry.”
A board member at art museum TX, Cathy enjoys visiting the museum often. “We’re a small art museum with a big sense of community,” she explains. “Exhibits contain the best of Texas local, contemporary art.”
Outside of the museum, art can be found everywhere in Sugar Land Town Square. The iconic SLTX sign, the fun selfie sculpture, the Longhorn mural (commissioned by Cathy herself), and an oldfashioned red phone booth, reminiscent of ones found across the pond, all make great Instagram-worthy backdrops.
The square is anchored by the beautifully designed Sugar Land City Hall building, making another great backdrop for photos and special events. On weekend nights, you’ll even find live entertainment on the City Hall steps. “Having a progressive entertainment hot spot just a few minutes from home is an amazing amenity that Sugar Land offers its residents,” Cathy says. “Let us find the perfect home for your family in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. My associates and I love seeing the smiling faces of so many new homeowners in our community.”
Prioritize Your Family’s Health in 2025
By Alisha McMillen
Do you need a full-service Family Physician? One who sees teens and adults, is available for same-day appointments and offers a warm, family feel in the office? One where you’re not required to park in a six-story parking garage and walk through big medical buildings just to see your primary care physician? Look no further than the Sugar Land location of Fulshear Family Medicine. “We are proud to serve families in our Sugar Land community with same-day appointments,” says owner and clinical director of Fulshear Family Medicine, Dr. Anisha Waxali. “We’re encouraging our patients to start the new year right by prioritizing health within their families. Dr. Adeel Qureshi is ready to help your
family do just that.”
Now accepting new patients, Dr. Qureshi joined the practice with an esteemed track record as a board-certified family physician dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare for multiple family members. “My focus is on preventive screenings and effective management of chronic conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, asthma, COPD, musculoskeletal injuries, and more,” Dr. Quershi says. “I like to spend a lot of time with patients, learning about their lifestyles and circumstances that may affect their health, and then we work together to come up with a plan that they can follow.”
Like Dr. Waxali, whose roots are in Sugar Land,
Dr. Qureshi is also from Sugar Land, where he attended Stephen F. Austin High School. “The residents of Sugar Land are well educated – they know their own health,” he says. “But they’re very understanding and open to suggestions.”
As the Sugar Land office grows, the practice plans to add physicians and mid-level providers (PAs and NPs) to serve the entire Sugar Land community and beyond. With a second office in the heart of Fulshear, also accepting new patients, there is always someone available to see new and existing patients … Dr. Qureshi at Sugar Land and Dr. Mary Santiago, Dr. Patrick Coate, and three mid-level providers at Fulshear.
“Our goal is to expand access to primary care in a setting driven by independent physicians,” Dr. Waxali says. “We stress preventive care and focus on lowering the cost of care for our patients.”
Though the Sugar Land office has numerous exam rooms to accommodate multiple patients at once, “it is not overwhelming or intimidating,” Dr. Qureshi says. “Our patients don’t experience the pressure of navigating a big hospital system. They experience our cozy environment with no wait time.”
“We are here if you’re sick, need your wellwoman or well-child visit, or have aches and pains,” Dr. Waxali says. “The last thing patients want to do is wait. When patients seek health care, they are vulnerable and sometimes frightened, so we have a duty to help them immediately.”
Fulshear Family Medicine accepts most major private insurance plans, as well as Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and Marketplace. They offer online appointment scheduling, or you can call them at 281-491-0094 to hear a friendly voice, who will schedule you right away.
Father (in-Law) Knows Best
by Alisha McMillen
Victor Quijano and his wife, Erin, love Sugar Land. They love their Sugar Mill neighborhood. And they love their street.
“This is the second house we purchased on the same street,” Victor says. “My family grew up in nearby Alief, and my in-laws live in Greatwood. We love being close to our families.”
Victor and Erin are so close with their family, they even chose to follow Erin’s parents’ advice when the time came to update their home.
“My in-laws recommended JT (Jaison Thottumkal, owner of AIS Remodeling) after we loved the work he and his team did at their house,” Victor explains. “Our primary bathroom had never been renovated. It had carpet all the way up to the toilet and the bathtub. There was no separation – no door or divider – between the
bathroom and the bedroom.”
Selecting JT, a fellow Fort Bend resident who specializes in updating Fort Bend’s homes, was the right choice for the job. “In our area, many homes are 20, 30, 40 years old – they’re ready to be updated,” JT explains. “We handle bathroom remodeling, and also complete kitchen remodels, new flooring, and carpentry. We’re a full service remodeling company.”
“We knew we wanted to make changes to the walls, so JT invited the carpenters to meet with us to understand exactly what we were looking for,” Victor explains. “JT priced everything out with different options so we could look at our budgetary requirements and our design goals at the same time and make an informed decision.”
JT also helped the couple with difficult design choices. “He helped us so much with the aesthetic of
the project,” Victor says. “He has a real eye for design, so he helped us make many of our design decisions. He definitely shows you the sky, but comes back down to earth with you when you need to lower the cost to meet a certain budget.”
If your Fort Bend County home needs a facelift, “Just listen to my in-laws,” Victor laughs. “JT did such a great job. His team is so professional, highly skilled, and friendly. In the end, we’re over the moon with the final results.”
Keep the Hot Water Flowing
FFlush Your HEATER
lushing your water heater at least once a year can increase the efficiency, functionality, and longevity of the unit. “Your water heater will work harder to heat the water if there’s a thick layer of sediment. The sediment will act as an insulator, keeping the heat in instead of transferring it to the water,” says Master Plumber Alan Burkhalter, founder of local Alan’s Plumbing. “The thicker the sediment becomes, the harder the water heater has to work, which results in more energy usage. That translates into higher bills. Increase efficiency and save money by having your water heater flushed every year.”
The dynamic team at Alan’s Plumbing is here to help.
A water heater works by bringing cold water into your home and heating it with a gas burner or electric element. When that cold water is initially brought into the tank, it often contains sediment that settles on the bottom or sides of the tank. Flushing your water heater can remove some of this sediment and prevent it from affecting the functionality of your water heater.
“The typical lifespan of a water heater tank is around eight to 12 years,” says Katie McFarland, longtime Alan’s Plumbing employee. “It’s estimated that water heaters that deal with hard water already have a decreased life expectancy
by Nicole Grace
by two or more years. If the tank is not properly maintained, you can expect it to last for even fewer years.”
“If you hear popping or rumbling from your water heater tank, it could be sediment buildup. This sound is caused by the sediment particles knocking against the inside of the tank,” Katie says. “Also, if you experience a drop in water temperature or pressure throughout the house it can indicate a problem. The more sediment that is brought into the tank, the more likely the sediment is going to be disturbed and possibly taken into hot water lines, which can clog pipes as well as shower heads and faucets.”
“Another benefit to committing to annual water heater maintenance is simply allowing professionals to routinely inspect the unit. This potentially prevents major issues, as a professional would be able to identify any signs or problems that should be addressed,” she adds.
Alan’s Plumbing has been helping Fort Bend families for 30 years. In the beginning, the team consisted of only Alan and his wife, Jennifer, who answered the calls, while Alan provided the service for the calls. Today, Alan’s brother Chris works alongside him, as well as Alan’s two oldest sons, Beau and Luke. Their youngest son, Jake, does plumbing sales in Houston. The team includes longtime plumbers Jaime, Christian, and Anthony and apprentices Nick, Noah, and PJ, with Jennifer running the back office with their always-reliable family friend Katie, and Katy (with a ‘Y’) as the voice behind the phones.
“Call us today to be sure your water heater is functioning efficiently,” Alan says. “Especially during these months of cooler weather, you want to be sure your hot water is working like it should be at all times.”

HELP END FOOD INSECURITY IN FORT BEND
by Alisha McMillen
“Westarted as a small threechurch food pantry, and have grown into a coalition of a dozen churches. We have a food pantry, a resale shop, and help with temporary financial assistance to those in need in Fort Bend County,” says Development Director Megan Leonhardt of East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry (EFBHNM). “We’re a unique food pantry as we have fresh proteins and produce available for our families, along with the typical pantry items. Getting groceries here can save a family money to use for other essential items. It can free up their funds to pay a utility or medical bill.”
“What we do at EFBHNM is serve the basic human needs of families in our community in a temporary financial crisis. We see new families each week, and it’s often not who you would expect. So many of our

Stop Springtime Sneezes and Sniffles BEFORE They Start
by Alisha McMillen
Spring is just around the corner, which brings pollen to Southeast Texas. The little pollen puffs turn white cars yellow and leave a golden filter on windshields. In Fort Bend County, tree pollen comes from oak, ash, sycamore, willow trees, and more. The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology registers the highest amounts of tree pollen in the spring months, but allergens can be found year-round.
“Symptoms of allergies are itchy and watery eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing. Our general approach with allergies is to be proactive. Try to get ahead of the symptoms and they won’t hit as hard,” says Dr. Lisa Mathew of Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy in Sugar Land.
Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy offers antihistamines and decongestants to keep allergies under control. “Our pharmacy makes all medications by hand,
on-site in Sugar Land,” Dr. Mathew explains. “Because we are not using predetermined doses of medications, we are able to tailor the medications to each person’s individual needs.”
pharmacists at Campbell’s Compounding Pharmacy can discuss individual requirements your physician to be sure the right dosage medication is prescribed. “We are similar concierge service,” continues Dr. Mathew. “Sometimes people are on other medications that may interact with antihistamines. We can tailor their antihistamine treatment so it does not conflict with other medications. We also limit fillers – our medications are made very clean, which is helpful for those
with dietary restrictions, such as dye-free, gluten-free, or gelatin-free requirements. We can manage all of these aspects without compromising care.”
With so many allergens in the air, skin disorders can also flare up. “For people with eczema, pollen can make their lesions bigger and more difficult to treat,” Dr. Mathew says. “We are able to provide compounded topical treatments to make skin symptoms decrease.”
“Start taking allergy medicines before you get symptoms to help make the adjustment to allergy season easier,” Dr. Mathew concludes. “Don’t let your symptoms build up, making you miserable during such a beautiful time of year.”
“If our staff can’t make it… then you probably don’t need it!”

SNOW HISTORY MADE !
Fort Bend Gets Stacks of
Tuesday, January 21st of 2025 was no normal winter day for the residents of Fort Bend County. A rare, oncein-a-generation snow storm blew through, dropping inches upon inches of snow and creating a fun snow day for families in Fort Bend.
Official reports show Richmond measured 4” of snow, while Sugar Land got 3” – although UpClose publishers, John and Alisha McMillen, think it was more at their Sugar Land home. Our area hasn’t seen this type of snow since 1960.
“We are empty nesters, so it was strange not to have our college-aged daughters here to play in the snow with us,” Alisha says. “But John and I rolled a few balls of snow to make our own tiny snowman. It was a fun escape from our normal activities.”
UpClose Magazine’s partners also enjoyed the day in the snow. “The snow day was such an unexpected day of joy and play at our house!” says Mandy Bui from East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry.
The Sugar Creek Country Club, home to the Exchange Club’s Wednesday morning meetings, looked beautiful under a white blanket of snow. And at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, in the heart of our city, it was a white-out.
We at UpClose Magazine hope everyone stayed warm and safe during this almost-unprecedented weather event. We all lost a couple of days of productivity, but gained an opportunity to slow down, breathe in the fresh, snowy air, build some snowmen, and throw some snowballs in our own front yards.
Bring the Family - Everyone Loves Spaghetti
By Alisha McMillen
Cheers to 38 years of delicious Exchange Club Spaghetti Dinners.
That’s 38 years of friendly rivals competing in a sauce cook-off. 38 years of silent and live auctions to raise as much money as possible. 38 years of family-friendly entertainment. And most importantly, 38 years of helping dozens of Fort Bend organizations every year, all thanks to the Exchange Club of Sugar Land.
“The Spaghetti Dinner is our biggest fundraiser every year,” says longtime Exchange Club member, attorney Juli Fournier. “Our goal is to raise unprecedented funds so we can help as many Fort Bend County neighbors as possible.”
Mark your calendar for March 8th at Safari Texas in Richmond. Dinner is served from 5:30pm8:30pm, followed by entertainment and a live and
silent auction. “We normally average around 1,200 attendees,” says the Exchange Club of Sugar Land’s president, Camille Edwards. Eight sauce-making teams compete, making their own delicious sauces – and the guests get to taste them all. “The winning team gets bragging rights for a year. There’s an official spaghetti bowl plaque that is passed around from year to year. The reigning champion is the Fort Bend District Attorney’s office,” Camille says.
Guests get to enjoy family-friendly entertainment from the Cookie Joe dancers and the JNE Rockin’ Longhorns, and can participate in both a silent and live auction after dinner. “Our silent auction traditionally has sports baskets, games baskets, liquor baskets, art, furniture, Texas-themed baskets, autographed items … so much to choose from,” Camille says. “Our past live auction items include hunting and
fishing trips, luxury travel opportunities, a Traeger BBQ set-up, and more highly anticipated experiences.”

Where Having a Tooth Pulled is
“Awesome!”
When nine-year-old Allie went in for her regular cleaning at Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental, she wanted to discuss a baby tooth that wasn’t ready to come out, even though her permanent tooth was emerging in front of it. Dr. Annie Zheng talked it through with Allie and her mom, Katrina Williams. “Dr. Zheng told me I could wait to get the baby tooth pulled or just go for it right then,” Allie says. “I decided to go for it! I just wanted to get it over with. And the dentist told me I’d get double money from the tooth fairy.”
“Allie was pretty nervous at first. She asked a lot of questions,” says Dr. Zheng. “But we gave her laughing gas. She was super fun to work with. After we were done, she said, ‘that was awesome!’”
So awesome that Allie didn’t even realize she had several shots in her mouth. “I got a shot? I didn’t feel any of it!” she told her mom after the procedure.
“Dr. Zheng was amazing,” Katrina says. “She was just excellent. Her main concern was that Allie understood everything. She reassured her many times that it wouldn’t hurt.”

Allie adds, “I showed my friends before and after and the first question they all asked was, ‘Did it hurt?’ I told them that it was easy and didn’t hurt. I even watched Trolls on the TV on the ceiling while they were pulling my tooth.”
Dr. Zheng was moved to become a pediatric dentist after working as a general dentist. “I saw the effect of traumatic experiences in childhood,” she explains. “I made it my mission to give kids a positive experience and ease the anxiety that comes with dental visits. And I love building relationships with whole families and
“I want to go to Allie’s dentist,” Katrina says. “I haven’t had great experiences at the dentist, but everyone at Grand Parkway Pediatric, from the time we walked in through the time we left, was so personal, helpful, and pleasant. It’s like a Pixar movie in there! And we were in and out in an hour with the cleaning and the procedure. It all went smoothly, quickly, and painlessly.”
Having three kids of his own makes founder and owner of Grand Parkway Pediatric, Dr. Faisal Khan, even more understanding of children’s needs. “Kids are my whole life,” he says. “My own kids, Zayna, Hamza, and Eisa, visit the office all the time. They love talking to the employees, and they help out by making goody bags and shredding papers.”
Joining Dr. Khan and Dr. Zheng are Dr. Priyanshi Ritwik and Dr. Khadija Khan, as well as an oral surgeon and an anesthesiologist. The practice provides all aspects of pediatric dentistry, special needs dentistry, and minor orthodontics.

Bringing a Longtime Vision
to Life
by Alisha McMillen
Debbie and Larry first moved into their Sugar Land neighborhood in 1991, where they raised their two children. They moved to Richmond for a few years after their kids were grown, but Sugar Land called them back in 2017, when their daughter moved her family into the neighborhood where she grew up.
“We came back because we wanted to live close to our grandchildren,” Debbie says. She and Larry share their home with two cats, Bogey and Sulu. “The kitchen was original to the house, which was built in 1998. I’ve known since I moved in what I wanted to change in the kitchen.”
Teri Gilberg, the Re-Modelista, first helped the couple remodel their primary bath several years ago. “She did a great job and there were no problems, so we didn’t hesitate to call her again. Teri visits every day and immediately takes care of any issues that come up,” Debbie continues.
The new, modern kitchen had almost everything updated –counters, cabinets, backsplash, and appliances. Plus the butler’s pantry was updated to a mini wine room for Larry, by adding a wine refrigerator below the counter and wine storage on the wall above the counter. “I now have plenty of room for my wine. I love Spanish wines. I think I fit 58 bottles into the new space,” he says.
“And it gets all of that wine out of my fridge,” Debbie laughs. “I prefer Margarita Friday!”
The kitchen is anchored by a hazel green-painted island that ties into the unique mosaic backsplash with tones of greens, grays and tans. “We changed the countertops to quartz with gray and green marbling throughout, and installed a lighter wood tone cabinet everywhere else, that beautifully coordinates with the hazel island,” Debbie says. “It was fun to pull the colors together to make my vision come to life. I’m a quilter and I love pulling colors together.”
Debbie’s favorite change was to replace many of the traditional cabinets with pull-out drawers. “The drawers are just easier for
me to get items in and out of,” she says.
“Teri’s team was fantastic,” she adds. “Tearout was done in one day, but the mess was all contained. They minimized the dust by putting up plastic all the way up our 12’ ceiling.”
The project was complete in three weeks, just in time for the family to celebrate Christmas in the new kitchen. “Every thing worked just the way I wanted it to,” Debbie says. “I absolutely would recommend Teri to anyone. She’s done two big projects in our home and has done great with both of them.”
