BOSS UP

"Many are called, but few are chosen." - Matthew 22:14

H

Have you ever felt frustrated, angry or bitter? If so, chances are you’re living beneath your potential. Some of us are called to be leaders. However, not everyone properly steps up to the challenge. There are several catch phrases these days about “Being a Boss”. It sounds good and many people are drawn to the idealistic view of what they think that means. However, very few are equipped with the skills to live up to the responsibility. It’s not an easy road to travel. Someone asked me once about the best way to handle adversity. My answer was

simple. “Trailblazers don’t have the luxury of smooth sailing. Trailblazers pave new paths for others to enjoy and that comes with a lot of bumps, bruises and experience”. So, if you’re going to take on the challenge of “Being a Boss,” remember to be firm but do it with class and grace. You may hear a lot of outside chatter but remain focused because only you can determine your future. Yours Truly,

DETRA TRUEHEART

SHARITTA GROSS

Detra TrueHeart is committed to helping other women experience a life of fulfillment. She's created Trueheart Speaks Enterprises which is an empowerment and lifestyle firm. It is headquartered out of Buffalo, NY. “It does something to me to see people settle for less than the life they were created to live. I love seeing people live life out loud. I love seeing men and women walk in the true essence for which they were created,” said TrueHeart. She says failure is part of that and is actually required for growth, "One of the keys to my success has been learning from my failures and getting back up when things don’t go as planned; being flexible. God has a way of shaking up your plan and replacing it with His.” TrueHeart has since inspired audiences across the country. However, she says the greatest joy for her is seeing the triumphs of others, “Most people don’t really understand the power of re-creating your story and generating a life of purpose that you crave. I get overjoyed when it clicks for my clients and my students that the power they always thought was someone else’s was theirs all along.”

SHARITTA GROSS, Age 39 R.I.T. Program Coordinator She's dedicated her career to helping others secure a better future. Sharitta Gross is known for her work in the community and has received a number of honors. Gross was recently selected as one of Rochester Business Journal's "Forty under 40". She is currently the program coordinator with Rochester Institute of Technology's Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education. Gross said it’s rewarding to help R.I.T students find employment, “In every area of my job I'm able to help someone accomplish their goal(s), be it a student, alum, employer, faculty, staff or inner office mate.” Her passion for community service goes far beyond a 9 to 5. She serves on several boards including the YWCA Rochester & Monroe County and the Anthony L. Jordan Foundation. However, she says she's never too tired to lend a hand. "Assisting people in reaching their predestined level of greatness through education, consulting and mentoring is definitely one of my passions," said Gross

Her passion doesn't stop there, she's focused on the future and having a larger impact. Gross is currently working on her Doctorate and said, “I see myself in a role that involves educating and connecting others to resources in the field of education and/or the federal government. I will continue to serve for my community!”

DR. RITA DIXON-GAITHER

"It truly is better to give than receive and each time I'm able to help someone, even in the smallest way, I am happy," said Michelle Hutchinson. The partner of Brown & Hutchinson law firm has built a career around supporting others during some of the most challenging and rewarding times in their life. She speaks for those who are unable to speak for themselves and shine in the courtroom. Power, class, and dedication these are just three words to describe Hutchinson. She serves on several boards and has worked for Rochester's City Hall. However, Hutchinson says she can’t take the credit for all of her accomplishments, “My keys to success have been God, my parents, my daughter and my tenacity. Even when I did not know God he knew me and brought me through many challenges. He put people and situations in my path to better me as a person and to afford me opportunities.” From the courtroom to the community you will find her encouraging others to reach their potential. “I don't define or limit my "work" by my occupation. The vision for my work, no matter what it might be or the forum, in which it occurs, is to educate, encourage and assist; and to always show grace and kindness along the way. Clearly, I cannot help everyone nor solve every problem. However, for each problem or issue I can assist in resolving, for every person that I can help, I believe it will be paid forward and that's how my vision will be accomplished; each one of us blessing another.”

Dr. Rita Carol Gaither, Age 61 Teacher for the Rochester City School District Founder of Pearl Ministries Inc.

You will always find Dr. Rita Dixon-Gaither somewhere working on the behalf of someone else. She has earned numerous degrees including her Doctoral degree in Leadership and Counseling. However, she's best known for serving as a mentor for a number of young people throughout the area. Gaither currently works with special needs students and the international refugee community at Edison Technical and Occupational Center. “My mission is to equip children and adults alike with the necessary skills to succeed in life. I accomplish this by focusing on educational, mental and physical needs,” said Dr. Gaither. Dr. Gaither is committed to improving the community and being part of the resolution, which is why she created a non-for-profit organization named PEARL Ministries Inc. or Personal Equipping through Anointed Reflective Learning. Dr. Gaither said, “Being a greater servant to humanity; ensuring that people within my area of influence have access to the necessary resources they need to succeed in life.” Her agency provides tutoring services which support students in a safe and caring environment. She says she's just getting started. The mother of three is working to establish a young men’s leadership home. It’s a goal she says is vital to the growth of the community, “A vast majority of today’s young males are not afforded the same opportunities as their counterparts. Graduation rates are down, incarceration is on the rise and violence within the community is rampant. Our leadership home for young men (ages 16-21) will provide displaced (or unaccompanied) young men with a stable and nurturing environment in which to flourish.” Continued on page 23 with Woman to Watch, Doddie Franklin

FINANCIAL PLANNING IS NOT THE SAME AS A DIET PLAN!

Written By: Rosiland Brooks, Brooks Financial Services

Have you been treating your financial plan the same as a diet? You start putting away a certain amount every month. However, just like your diet as soon as you don't see results quickly, you give up. Funds have to be put away and forgotten about. You will drive yourself crazy looking every few days to see how much your money has accumulated. It's like the old saying “A WATCHED POT NEVER BOILS”. This simply means as long as you are looking, it will seem like nothing is happening. Learning to be patient is the key. If you stop just because you do not see results as soon as you thought you should, then you will NEVER see results. I cannot say it enough, you must change your mindset. We live in a culture that does not teach the importance of being financially healthy. This makes it difficult for one to understand that they have to make wise financial decisions early in life to see the best results. However, it is never too late. You can start today. •

First, set up a realistic budget. You have to be honest with yourself. How much are you really spending unnecessarily? Is everything you are purchasing something that is needed or is it something you want? Again, learn to discipline yourself. If it takes you not going to the mall or any store for that matter, then that’s what you have to do. You have to think about what’s really important in the long run.

10 | BREAKTHRU MAGAZINE

Look at the big picture. I always say, “I want my later to be greater”. I’ve learned the only way for this to happen is to properly plan. You don't want to struggle to pay your bills in your later years but have a closet full of clothes, shoes and jewelry. During retirement we should be celebrating the championship!

Taking the first step is the hardest, but once you do it, it will be like riding a bike. You do not need a lot of money to get started. You can start with as little as $50.00. The key is starting. If you put money away on a consistent basis and forget about it, it will eventually grow. There are places to turn for help. Morningstar is a mutual fund rating company. They have a great tool called the Fund Selector that allows you to search mutual funds based on what's important to you. If you are not comfortable with starting on your own, there are some financial advisors that will help get you started for free including Diane Hennekey at Edward Jones, 585-723-6850. So, STOP procrastinating and get started investing in your future today to see Breakthru results! If you are in need of financial planning, tax planning, accounting or payroll services or would like to schedule a financial literacy workshop, contact Brooks Financial Services (BFS) at 585-200-0848.

FRESH FACES Written by Nana Duffy M.D. Photographer: George Morris

forSpring

The holy grail of facial beauty is to be able to wear less make-up or even no make-up at all. Many times acne bumps, razor bumps or hyperpigmentation prevent us from having that fresh clear face that we all want. These simple steps are do-it-yourself treatments that will help get your completion in tip-top shape for spring so that foundation is a choice, not a necessity. •

Clear up acne by using a 2% salicylic acid face wash twice daily (Neutrogena® Oil-free Acne Wash), use witch hazel as a toner, apply a 10% benzoyl peroxide gel (Oxy® maximum action) in the morning as spot treatment to individual blemishes.

Nix hyperpigmentation by applying a 3% hydroquinone containing cream (Nadinola® cream) to any brown marks on the skin twice daily

Give yourself a facial once per week by placing boiling water in a heat-safe bowl with a few springs of mint or lavender oil, place face over bowl and cover both bowl and face with a towel, allow steam to flow onto face for 10 minutes, manually exfoliate the skin afterwards with a paste of equal amounts sugar and honey used as a facial scrub

Moisturize the skin daily with a glycolic acid (Aqua Glycolic® face cream) containing cream to help with hyperpigmentation, prevent blemishes and improve fine lines and wrinkles

For men with razor bumps on the lower face, soften the skin before shaving by using a hot wet towel applied to the area for 10 minutes, shave with a fresh razor and with shaving cream, after shaving apply Tend Skin® to prevent ingrown hairs

Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol consumption keep the skin hydrated

To Juice or Not to Juice? Darson L. Rhodes, PhD, MCHES Assistant Professor Truman State University Department of Health and Exercise Sciences

Everyone’s talking about it. You’ve seen the infomercials, and you may have even found yourself slurping one down with the best of them. So, is it true? Does it work? Is juicing really something we should all be doing? The answer to those questions really just depends on the circumstance and what you are hoping to gain, or in some cases lose, from juicing. Let’s start with the advantages of juicing. •

It can be a great way to get more fruits and veggies into your diet.Perhaps you couldn’t get on the kale chip bandwagon, or you weren’t super excited when you were offered grilled squash instead French fries as a side dish. Not everyone loves vegetables and fruits, so if juicing provides a tastier way for you (or your family) to get them into your diets, then go for it. Fruits and vegetables are very healthy for us, and most of us don’t eat as many as we should. Every time we eat, half of our plate should be filled with vegetables and fruits. If you know your plate won’t be, then adding some blended veggies and fruits into your diet may be the way to go.

It can be convenient. We lead hectic lives, and sometimes sitting down for a proper meal just isn’t possible. At times like these, we may find ourselves hitting the nearest drive thru to order something quick, but usually not so healthy. A much healthier option but still convenient choice can be blended fruits and veggies. When you do opt for a blended smoothie in place of a standard meal, you need to make sure you add some protein into your drink. Additions like Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or skim milk will provide you with needed protein that will help keep you feeling full longer.

While these are the two advantages of juicing, there are two big pitfalls to watch out for as well. •

You may miss out on some of the benefits of fruits and vegetables when you juice them. Whole fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of fiber. When you juice a fruit or vegetable, you lose some or all of the pulp depending upon how you do it. The pulp is where the fiber is. No pulp means no fiber. Now, if you blend or puree the fruits and vegetables instead of just squeezing the juice out of them, then you can still get the valuable fiber.

WOMEN IN GOSPEL By Grand Tone Thousands in Rochester tuned in to B.E.T.’s “Sunday Best” audition show. Our very own, Serena Young, was called into the room where the famous gospel artist judges sat. “I was always nervous. But we would get so much love from the stage manager before hitting the stage, made it so much easier,” admits Young. Whether she was nervous or not, no one could tell, but she belted out an acapella of “Blessed Assurance”. Once the judges gave the green light for her to move to the next level...ROCHESTER HAD ARRIVED.

Affectionately called “Simply Rena”, she was born Serena Williams in Rochester, New York to Pastor Richard & First Lady Evelyn Williams as the youngest of 3 kids. She comes from a very talented family of singers and musicians but her father was her inspiration. She began her singing ministry at age 3 and Pastor Williams encouraged her to sing to the glory and honor of God. She sung all over the city and was widely known for singing “I Shall Not Be Moved”, which she says became her testimony in life.

“Singing is just my passion and I love to do it and it brings joy to the lives of people.” Serena Young

Who doesn’t know Serena Young? Everyone throughout western New York to Atlanta to the west coast know and love Serena. It’s more than just her anointed voice. She’s best known for being genuine, sweet, kind and her contagious laughter. But...that voice. That very anointed voice has blessed many through concerts, music events, funerals, weddings, birthdays and Young herself. “Singing is just my passion and I love to do it and it brings joy to the lives of people,” said Young.

20 | BREAKTHRU MAGAZINE

As the years progressed, so did her voice. She integrated jazzy improvs to her vocal depth and created a sound that exemplified the soul of Aretha Franklin and the energy of Patti LaBelle. Serena later attended the Buffalo Academy Of Visual & Performing Arts. In 1992, she joined a local female gospel group named Uneek, who signed a major recording deal with Tyscot Records and released a hit single titled. “Good Morning, Holy Spirit”, on the “Just As I Am” album. They later released a second album on the

Tyscot label titled “Striving”. Both albums are still selling to this very day...20 years later. In 2006, Serena released her very first solo project “Simply Rena” which took Western New York by storm and had several singles that became regional hits. Her sophomore project, “Its Over” released in 2014, has surpassed the success of her freshman project and has the urban gospel music industry currently abuzz. Young says being apart of “Sunday’s Best” journey. “ It was a GREAT experience. Didn’t feel like a competition. Everyone got along well. We became family. My experience taught me that you really have to be up on your music game and know the industry!” She has since graced the stage with several artists that have influenced her, such as BET “Sunday Best” judge & mentor, Kim Burrell, Tye Tribbett, Kirk Franklin, Shirley Ceasar, Edwin Hawkins, Tremaine Hawkins, Ernest Pugh, The Clark Sisters, and many more. Just this past summer,

she had the great opportunity to perform as the opening artist for the “Festival Of Praise” tour featuring Fred Hammond and Donnie McClurkin. Since her success on BET’s “Sunday Best” as a Top 5 Finalist, she was given the opportunity to perform on an international world tour spanning 5 countries with the world renowned Boys Choir Of Harlem. Young says, “It was WONDERFUL! They have a GREAT love for Gospel Music as a whole. We didn’t sing in their language, we sang in English, but they understood when we said “Jesus” and “Hallelujah”! It was beautiful every night to hear people say thank you for bringing hope to our country, very rewarding.” In spite of all her professional accomplishments, world travels, she says she’s most honored in being the mother of her four children: Tyrone Jr, Diamond, Maiya, and Treasure.

THE BREAKTHRU ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

BET SUNDAY BEST’S DaMarkaWheeler Photographer: Albert Jones

By Grand Tone BUFFALO IS DEFINTELY IN THE HOUSE! All of Western and Upstate New York were watching Season 7 of Sunday Best as Buffalo’s own, DaMarka Wheeler, whom most friends and family affectionately call “Moo Moo”, entered the audition stage in Washington, D.C. The moment she opened her mouth to sing her version of “Blessed Assurance”, you can see the reaction given by Sunday Best’s judge and music mentor, Kim Burrell. “Oh my Lord, I was so nervous during auditions, but I pulled through. During the show, I was good because my family was in the audience, “admitted Wheeler.

22 | BREAKTHRU MAGAZINE

Most people who have been around her know…that girl can SANG!!!! For those in Rochester that have attended her good friend, Serena Young’s Annual All-White Birthday Gospel Concert, DaMarka was always in attendance to bring the church down with her vocals. Not so many pews away, Sunday Best runner-up from Season 6, Alexis Spight, was also there to sing up a shout or two and show each other love. Without a doubt, DaMarka Wheeler is a young artist that has captivated audiences near and far and her vocal techniques are superb with an anointing for this generation.

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, DaMarka started singing at the age of 4. By 12 years old, DaMarka was singing in a group called “The Spiritualletes”, formed by her uncle, Pastor Sammy White, who performed all over and throughout the Buffalo area. During her high school years, she was known as being one of the best singers in school but DaMarka had a true underlying passion for ministry and music. After high school, she joined a choir called AVIP, under the direction of Pastor Troy Brown and became the praise and worship leader and an ordained evangelist at Greater Anointing Tabernacle. She later relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and became a part of David Walker and High Praise. Today, DaMarka is an awesome and attentive mother of DeMarkus and currently resides back in Buffalo. She attends the Antioch Holiness Church under the leadership and tutelage of Bishop James H. and Lady Kathy Bowman, where she is still a faithful praise and worship leader. DaMarka has had the opportunity to perform on stage

with and for many great gospel artists and legends such as The Clark Sisters and Kim Burrell. She’s also performed as a background artist for Bishop Paul Morton and sang in a tribute to the great Richard Smallwood. Out of thousands who auditioned for Season 7 of Sunday Best, she made it as a top 10 contestant and contender on the show and she has a message to other aspiring singers. Wheeler said, “Make sure it’s something you really want to do. Stay focused. Know and learn your music and sing like never before. But most importantly enjoy every moment.” Despite the fact that she’s travelled across the country and performed with a number of recording artists, Wheeler is still known to many for her humility. Wheeler said,“I would like to be used as a vessel of change where my spirit filled singing will touch lives of many so that souls will be saved throughout the world.” DaMarka plans to continue her public career by singing and writing with an aspiration to produce an upcoming CD solo project.

DODDIE FRANKLIN “Our mission is to educate young women through mentoring, equipping them to make positive decisions through character building, goal setting and life skills,” Doddie Franklin said providing the proper support for young girls is vital. Franklin’s organization specifically focuses on girls between fourth and twelfth grades. Some of readers reached out to us. “They are teaching these young children about how to be role models in our society of today. They are helping them gain confidence in becoming a generation of responsible productive women,” said Clemont Brown. Franklin said her goal is for the mentees to one day return as mentors, “We want to foster a pay-it-forward mentality. I see them academically rise up and become influential leaders for this present age.”

You may be overestimating the power of juicing. There are a lot of diets that promote juicing as a way to drop pounds fast as well as numerous other health claims about detoxing and cleansing your body. As far as weight loss is concerned, there is no magic power in juicing. In fact, adding juices and smoothies to your diet can actually cause weight gain! Weight loss occurs when your body uses more Calories than you eat and drink. If you add Calories to your diet through juices or smoothies but don’t reduce them somewhere else or use more through exercise, you will gain weight. People who lose weight through juicing usually do so by replacing one or more meals a day with smoothies. The problem with this approach to weight loss is that they may not be getting enough protein or other important nutrients when they don’t eat real food. As such, the weight they lose may be muscle rather than fat. Also, they often grow weary of this type of diet after a few days or weeks. It is not a good long-term plan. If you want to lose weight, you need to make changes to your diet that you can maintain for life, not just a few days.

Regarding detoxing and body cleansing, there is no scientific research to support these claims. You have kidneys and a liver to “detox” your body. You are already well equipped. Do not be fooled by someone telling you otherwise. It is true that diets that include lots of vegetables and fruits decrease our risk for heart disease and some cancers, but you don’t have to juice them for it to work.

Now that you know the advantages of juicing and some potential pitfalls, you have to decide if it’s right for you. If you decide you want to give it a spin, here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your juicing experience. •

Don’t go broke. Juicers range in price from around $30 to hundreds of dollars. Most people don’t even need to buy a juicer. If you have a blender, you can use it to puree many fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. If you try it for a while and decide you really love juicing, then you may want to consider buying something more expensive.

Puree, don’t squeeze. To make your juices, remember to puree or blend the whole fruits and vegetables so that you keep the valuable fiber.

Make wise choices. If you use frozen fruits, read the ingredients on the package to make sure there isn’t any sugar added. Also, watch out for smoothies at restaurants. Some smoothies are really just glorified fruit milk shakes, with as much fat, sugar, and calories as a regular milk shake. Read the nutrition information when you buy them at restaurants or even better, just make your own so you know exactly what you’re getting.

If it’s a meal, make it a good meal. If you are using your blended juice drinks in place of a meal, then be sure it has all the nutrients it needs to be a real meal. Remember Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or skim milk can provide the much needed protein to your meal, and help keep your feeling full.

Blend fruits AND veggies. It can be tempting to just blend sweet fruits and skip the veggies, but don’t. Vegetables usually have fewer calories than fruits and are very nutrient dense. If there is any magic power in juicing, it’s that you can sneak vegetables undetected into tasty blended treats. Use that to your advantage for your own diet and your family.

Overall, juicing can be a great way to add more vegetables and fruit to you and your family’s diet. Just be sure you if you decide to do it, that you make healthy choices while doing so. Happy juicing!
