Willkommen! Yes, we are extremely proud of our German heritage. As the grandson of German immigrants, I treasure the rich history of the Texas Hill Country. I know you will find this place special, too. Boerne is home to the one and only Hill Country Mile, and you can’t miss it! Take a stroll along historic Main Street to experience the great boutique shopping, casual and fine dining, and our new public art display, “Art al Fresco”, an outdoor or “fresh air” exhibit of public art located throughout our historic downtown and along Boerne’s Trail system. There is always something going on whether it is a free concert at Main Plaza or a parade, festival or one of many family-friendly events that change throughout the seasons. You can get just about anywhere in the heart of Boerne using our great trail and sidewalk systems, so wear comfy shoes and start exploring! For a unique back-to-nature experience, be sure to visit the award-winning Cibolo Nature Center nestled along Cibolo Creek. There are numerous art galleries, lovely restaurants and a myriad of charming boutiques, and we have abundant greenspace including trails, creeks, Boerne lake, and many parks. The Boerne area also has fantastic outdoor recreation and attractions including hiking, biking, motorcycling, kayaking, caving, museums, wineries, breweries, golf courses and sporting facilities, and our surrounding hills provide a breathtaking backdrop. We are so glad that you are here, and we know you will have a great time. You might even decide to make Boerne your new home.

BOERNE From our beginning over 150 years ago, through today, Boerne’s European roots are still evident in our architecture and our spirit. As you stroll along the famous Hill Country Mile, you will experience why Boerne is one of the top destinations in the Texas Hill Country, and a favorite in the entire state.

Shopping

Architecture

Talented chefs produce their daily “art” throughout casual bistros, fine dining restaurants, and an eclectic culinary scene that has spawned a local food tour. Baked goods and pastries, gourmet treats and local coffee houses fill the air with their inviting aromas. And finally, for a relaxing way to unwind, there are also wine bars, breweries and beer gardens throughout town.

Throughout historic downtown, you will see many iconic buildings which have been painstakingly restored to their architectural pasts. Many of our beloved heritage buildings have been repurposed today as art galleries, boutiques, bistros, bakeries, and specialty stores where you can enjoy visiting local businesses while also imagining the storied pasts of these treasured buildings.

Shopping in Boerne will take you on a journey where you will find treasures of all kinds. Quaint boutiques, antique stores, furniture and home decor, clothing for every style and taste, gorgeous jewelry and fabulous gifts await!

CIBOLO CREEK BREWING CO. Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. is a great addition to Boerne’s brew pub scene, and it is a favorite gathering place for locals, as well as visitors! Housed in a renovated historic cottage on Boerne’s Main Street, Cibolo Creek Brewing Co. offers casual front porch seating that evokes a “beer garden” atmosphere, but with a much cooler vibe. A sophisticated pub menu features farmto-table selections that include popular cheese and meat boards, as well as madein-house pickles that perfectly pair with one of the best burgers in town! While the food is getting great attention, the real focus here is the selection of 6 different house beers that are brewed on site. There is also a rotating selection of “guest beers”, as well as wine and cider. Community-length tables inside allow larger groups to gather and watch their favorite teams on the big screen, and smaller, more intimate tables

The trail follows the Cibolo Creek, and at several points enables users to move in and out of the famed Hill Country Mile. THE “HUB”

Boerne is the Hill Country “hub” We agree--- Boerne is so charming and offers so much that you may never get around to venturing out for the day! After all, we are a top destination with fantastic shopping and dining, great attractions, and lots of comfortable places to lay your head at night. But we are also a great “hub” during a visit to the Texas Hill Country because of our convenience to major airports, as well as, the short distance to many other popular Texas towns. Some of our closest neighbors include:

Bandera

The self-proclaimed “Cowboy Capital of the World” is a throwback to the days of the Old West. Bandera was the starting point of the Great Western Cattle Trail during the latter 19th century. Today, the town is known for its abundance of

saloons, honky-tonks, dude ranches, Main Street shopping, and its fierce loyalty to the Cowboy way. (Drive from Boerne: 30 minutes)

Bergheim

is part of Kendall County, and the name means “Mountain Home” in German. One of the must-see stops there is the Bergheim General Store, an old-fashioned store like you knew as a kid. Also nearby, The Round Up is an outdoor beer garden with great touring bands and a playground for the kids. O’Brien’s also offers rustic, elegant Texas cuisine. (Drive from Boerne: 10 minutes)

Historic Camp Verde

was the 1854 site of Jefferson Davis’ “Texas Camel Experiment”. Robert E. Lee was said to have laid out the grounds, including the officer’s quarters and the camel pens. A longtime general store and post office for soldiers, the present-day two-story Southern colonial stone Camp Verde General Store is a fabulous shopping and dining destination. (Drive from Boerne: 35 minutes)

Comfort

is famously unincorporated, and that’s exactly how the locals like it! A large number of antique dealers, whimsical retail stores, wineries, and eclectic eateries make up the downtown district. Nearly every building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The town’s pace runs slower than many of its bigger neighbors. Part of Kendall County 46 | VisitBoerne.org

THINGS TO DO (where Boerne is the county seat), this charming town hosts some favorite events throughout each season. (Drive from Boerne: 20 minutes)

Fredericksburg is a German-heritage town that is home to many national museums and attractions including the National Museum of the Pacific War, the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park and LBJ State Park. Lots of shopping, dining and art galleries in the area, and enough wineries to rival Napa Valley. The Rockbox Theater offers Branson-type entertainment with family-friendly performances. The popular Wildseed Farms offers great picture-taking spots where visitors can walk among the seasonal crops. (Drive from Boerne: 45 minutes)

Ingram is nestled on the Guadalupe river between Kerrville and Hunt. Historic Old Ingram Loop is a working artists’ colony along the banks of the Guadalupe River. While you’re there, check out Stonehenge II—a life-sized replica of the original one— which sits on the grounds of Ingram’s Point Theater. (Drive from Boerne: 35 minutes)

and more. (Drive from Boerne: 30 minutes)

New Braunfels

This fellow Germanheritage Hill Country town offers a variety of shopping, dining, and events that take place throughout the year. Some of our very first settlers emigrated from New Braunfels, and we continue a shared history of our European influence. Great shopping, dining, and many events throughout the year including WurstFest. (Drive from Boerne: 60 minutes)

San Antonio is filled with family activities including Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme park, Sea World, the Alamo and the worldfamous River Walk. For shopping, La Cantera Mall offers luxury, upscale stores in an outdoor “al fresco” setting. (Drive from Boerne: 20 minutes)

Sisterdale

is a once-thriving center of German abolitionism and Unionism, it became a quiet hamlet after the Civil War. Today, it features Sister Creek Vineyards, Sisterdale Saloon, a handful of wonderful artisan shops and Blackboard Bar-B-Q--- a great afternoon stop. (Drive from Boerne: 15 minutes)

Kerrville

sits along the banks of the Guadalupe River, which meanders its way through the middle of town. A vibrant cultural and arts scene, there is a great walkable downtown area where you will find many of the retail stores, art galleries and restaurants. The Museum of Western Art, and The Kerr Arts and Cultural Center are popular with art patrons. Seasonally, there are many nature activities along the river including kayaking, bird-watching VisitBoerne.org | 47

THE ARTS Art al Fresco and Boerne’s Public Art Program

Art al Fresco, an “art on loan” program, is an outdoor public art competition that temporarily places sculptures throughout historic downtown Boerne’s Hill Country Mile and nearby Trail System.
