Hunting Season Is Here! By Fred Rodriguez
Wow, we are smack dab in the middle of Hunting season. There are so many choices, deer hunting, hunting for Exotics, predators, Quail, Duck and dove,so many choices. I guess for many they would probably put Deer hunting first. Now let’s make a comparison, to get on a deer lease or buy a weekend hunt. Then there are high fence and then there are low fence leases and ranches. Then there is the cost. Low fence or high fence and then the area your looking into. When looking into a lease always ask why it’s available now, do you have any photos from the last 5 years, does the property have deer blinds, are guest allowed? These are just a few of the questions you should ask. Another big circumstance is, is there a contract. Sometimes people have time to get in a deer lease and sometimes they don’t. If you don’t have the time then maybe you should look into booking a hunt with me Texas Sportsman Outfitters. Sometimes people will do this, cost comparison, let’s say it’s 3,000 for a deer lease per person and you get to shoot a Trophy which is over 140 Boone and Crockett score and a management buck and one or two Doe. On top of this you need to buy deer corn and deer protein and the expense another $1,000.00 dollars plus all the times you go, the groceries, the gas etc. I know but that is all the fun stuff. Now, if you don’t have the time to do all of this, then maybe you should book a hunt with The Texas Sportsman Outfitters. Buck hunts start at 1,500.00 and on up. Lodging is provided with some of the ranches that I deal with and there is a extra cost for that. So you can decide get a Lease or book a hunt with me . Cast and Blast By Nick Lapre With the holidays coming up it’s that time of the year where we take the time to spend time with our family and friends. Everyone at Southern Exposure Inland Fishing Charters can’t believe how 2017 turned out. This has been our busiest year and can’t believe the friendships and memories we have made with our clients. We ended the year with a bang for a client who decided to spend his bachelor party with us. This trip was a Cast and Blast where they shot 40 plus ducks in the morning and caught plenty of Speckled Trout, Redfish & Sheephead. The clients had an amazing spread of food from Chef David which included Char Grilled Oysters, fried Speckled Trout, Seafood Gumbo along with many more of his signature dishes. The next morning they were sent out with the Guides of Southern Exposure Inland Fishing Charters to shoot some ducks on the east side of t he Mississippi River of Buras, Louisiana. They had plenty of ducks flying but with low water the boats had to be repositioned to give them the best chance of limiting out. They ended up finishing about 11:00 am and were brought back to the lodge for a Jambalaya lunch and relaxation and to give the guides some time to switch gears from duck hunting to fishing. With the boats leaving the lodge for 12:00 pm to chase fish.
10- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - DECEMBER 2017
With the wind blowing 20+ mph the guys had to hide out in some wind protected areas to catch fish. Canals of Cox Bay, small protected bays such as Bay Allen & leeward shorelines of cuts and bays were also fished to get the guys to put fish in the box. They used live shrimp under a Boat Monkey Float along with a variety of Matrix Shad soft plastics to put an awesome table of fish together and end end a wonderful trip at Southern Exposure Inland Fishing Charters. We would like to take a moment to give our condolences to the family of Tony Fotenot “The Castin Cajun” who passed this week. He was a staple of the fishing industry in South Louisiana. He was also the man behind the Wounded Warrior Project out of Cocodrie. As we end the year and shut down for the winter we would like to wish all Happy Holidays and thank everyone who has fished with us this year at Southern Exposure Inland Fishing Charters in Buras, Louisiana. It’s because of our clients and our passion for the outdoors we do this. If your looking for a trip of a life time give us a call at 504-250-9887 or look us up online to book for 2018!

Flounder Tips and Tactics By Brian Joseph Spencer
Finally, the heat is starting to subside a bit with the occasional cool front coming through. The problem is that the temperatures have not gotten below fifty degrees, therefore causing the flounder run to be off track. A couple of fishing buddies and I also think that the hurricane we had caused a fast change in water temperatures along with the super tide and a lot of the flounder may have rode that out to the gulf. In Houston I am seeing that the run is working its way into full swing maybe after two more fronts. Out here in Corpus area there are still plenty of fish to be found, they are just staying concentrated in the deeper areas where spawning can take place. If you may remember the flounder need to be between 60ft and 160ft deep to expel their eggs. The water pressure helps them out since they cannot do it on their own. Lots of people have been catching some big slabs, up to almost 9 lbs. As the run progresses the size will still increase some. Although there are flounder around there is no comparison to how thick they were two years ago this time. I realize that each year it will vary depending on weather, tides, temperatures and all sorts of variables. Most of the fish with any kind of size have been caught at the jetties or in very close proximity to them. We have been using chickenboy lures, gulps and homereckers in a whole lot of assorted colors. Anyone who asks for what colors are best for what water clarity, I say in clear water use clear colors and in dirty water I use darker colors. As for jig head weight I stick to whatever kind of weight will keep me on the bottom without snagging. ¼ oz. is a great start with a 1/8th oz. trailers. Sometimes if the tides aren’t correct the fish might need a little coercing with a mullet tipped lure for scent. Using live mullet will produce some great fish during these run times just use a Carolina rig so they won’t feel the tension on the line. Now I know that by the time this comes out it might be too late but during November there is no gigging for flounder and your pole and line limit is 2 per person. In December from the 1st-14th you can start gigging again but only two per person until the 15th of December where your limit returns to 5 by any means and methods and must be 14 inches or larger to take home. 14- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - DECEMBER 2017

TRAILERING YOUR BOAT SAFELY By Captain James Stewart
Many trailering accidents could be eliminated by selecting the proper tow vehicle, trailer and hitch for your boat. Performing routine maintenance and practicing before you take it out would be bonuses. One happened recently on S.P.I. A boat got bumped off a trailer and on to a stairway made of concrete. Concrete won, but the handrail needs a little t.l.c. Don’t believe anyone was hurt from my info, but it could have been much worse. Other stories are all over the news rags. One I heard was incredible. Some ladies were having trouble with slow speed from their boat. They pulled over someone to ask what the problem was and to their astonishment, the trailer was still attached to the boat. Go figure. DILLY, DILLY. Choose the proper trailer for your boat. It should provide structural support. It should be long enough, but not too long. In salt water, you should use aluminum trailers. Lights are very important especially at night. If it’s been sitting for a long time, check the tires for air pressure and for those cracks along the sides. If it is an automobile tire, you should consider changing it. Trailer tires have more plys on the sides of the tire for more support etc. On the highway, allow more time to brake. You are hauling a ton or more behind you and it will catch you off guard when you really need stopping power. Practice this on a isolated road. Don’t forget to attach the safety chains. They need to be crisscrossed below the tongue so as to catch it if it happens to come off. Balance the weight in the boat if possible while you are trailering it to your favorite spot. I hope these tips help. Watch me on youtube in my captains series coming soon and as always, be safe and see you on the water.

Basic Field First Aid By Manny Perez
Most often times, adventures in the field are depicted as a hunter or group of hunters on a weekend get away with their faithful K-9 companion by their side. There are countless adventures and dog activities in the field that dog owners can enjoy, sometimes people even bring their dogs along for mere companionship. Regardless of the reason for bringing your faithful friend afield, you must remember to bring along the basic necessities to ensure your canine partner is properly cared for. In today’s article I would like to talk about First Aid, and having an emergency plan in place should an emergent situation arise. I recommend educating oneself in K-9 first aid and putting together an emergency kit. There are several companies that have taken the work out of preparing a kit. I have realized, through years of experience, that most of these kits are extremely basic. My recommendation is that one use this kit as a start and then build on it, by adding other over the counter products to treat a probable injury. An alternative avenue is to visit your family veterinarian and seek advice or even possibly ask them to build you a custom kit based on 30- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - DECEMBER 2017
your expertise or level of training and preparedness. Many times, knowing the dog and the potential for injury can create a very suitable kit. While preparing an emergency dog kit, I visit pet stores as well as farm and ranch stores. These places specialize in equipment that is properly suited for just about any and all emergencies. I will include a list and an example of a kit that is available online. A special field note to consider is to keep a small instruction guideline for these emergent situations. I have realized that in an emergency situation people tend to panic and have trouble with fine motor skills and memory. For this reason, I keep basic labels and methods of treatment written down, in permanent marker, on my items as a helpful reminder of how to use them. So here’s the deal, I keep these kits handy every day on my guided hunts. First, I keep a basic kit for minor injuries or scrapes and irritations. This includes topical ointments, sprays, gauze, bandages, athletic tape, and wrap. Next, I keep a more advanced kit that covers more severe injuries, such as deep lacerations, broken bones, dehydration, or low blood sugar in a dog. Please don’t forget to include
splints and a muzzle as well. When a dog is in pain, they may bite the person administering first aid or become difficult to treat. Lastly, I keep everything that can be used for both a pet and a person.
One final note, keep both your family veterinarians phone number available and written down in your first aid kit, as well as an alternative after hours veterinarian phone number. This is a must when transporting your dog for professional medical help. Should your situation require this type of attention, you are
readily prepared for this as well. So please, take this article as expert field advice and prepare yourself both educationally and by getting a suitable kit that can possibly save a life one day. Manuel Noel Perez Jr. “Manny has been an outdoor enthusiast for most of his life. He began training his own hunting dogs at the early age of nine. He has been guiding deer and quail hunts for over twenty years and has a wealth of dog knowledge in the field. When not on a hunt of his own, Manny would rather be found working behind a blood trailing dog, a water dog, or a well-trained pointer.

Hunting the Devil Fish of Padre Island By Steve Hathcock
1912: While on a fishing expedition to Tarpon Beach on the southern tip of Padre Island, a group of visiting anglers devised a six-inch steel harpoon to which was attached 150 feet of rope. Armed with their lethal barb the men set off looking for one of the famed devil fish or giant mantas that frequented this part of the Gulf of Mexico. Ed Kline, a local fisherman of some fame was hired to help the anglers find one of the giants. Around 10 o’clock that morning a huge manta was observed basking in the sun a short distance from the jetty. Its broad back rose well above the surface indicating its huge size. Quietly approaching close to the slumbering creature, Kline stood up in the boat and hurled the harpoon as hard as he could. The sharpened tip sank several inches into the flesh of the monster fish. The creature woke with a start and immediately plunged for deep water. The men hesitated as the rope fed out at their feet. Should they cut the line or take the ride. Their dilemma was solved when the wounded fish suddenly changed course and sped out into the open gulf at a speed that soon left the land behind. The monster swam out about 6 miles before circling back towards the shore. At this time, the crew of another craft attached themselves to Kline’s boat. To the amazement of the men, the added weight seemed not to affect the giant beast in the least. One by one fourteen other boats attached themselves to the line tethering the giant ray. Undeterred, the huge fish continued to dash here and there. Before long it became obvious the battle had developed into a contest of stamina. Overhead a tropical sun burned down and slowly, the fun went out of the contest. Once the fish dragged the men some 25 miles out into the gulf and it dawned upon the men that they may be in of danger. Twice the creature set a course for the boats that foamed along behind him but fortunately passed beneath without overturning any of them. Occasionally it would come to the surface and throw itself about madly. At the end of 6 hours the men finally realized the creature might tow them about indefinitely. 40- TEXAS SPORTSMAN - DECEMBER 2017
A signal of distress was hoisted and the man on watch in the cupola of the Life Saving Service over on Brazos Island immediately ascertained the problem. A crew arrived shortly with a 30-30 rifle and another harpoon. The second harpoon was thrown into the creature and again it threw one of its mighty wings into the air and headed out to open sea. Incredibly, the creature continued at a rapid pace for 2 hours without seeming to tire in the least. Nine hours had passed and the exhausted men all suffered from heat prostration, thirst and hunger, but none demurred from their quest.
It was time to use the rifle. The first shot was fired into its body and the fish immediately sank far beneath the water and headed out through the pass into open water. But the weight of the boats and men were beginning to take their toll and the creature was finally hauled to the surface where several more shots were fired into its body. That ended the struggle. A rope was attached to the body and the great fish was towed to land by one of the gasoline powered launches. It was estimated that the weight of the creature was in excess of 3000 pounds and it measured 15 feet across and 30 feet long.
