A Letter to Our Readers
There’s something happening here What it is ain’t exactly clear – Buffalo Springfield, For What it’s Worth
Pretty much sums up 2017, huh? Stands to reason a year ending with Mercury in retrograde seguing right into the last week or so of the Stressmas holidaze would end on something less than a clear note. Buffalo Springfield recorded For What It’s Worth (subtitled Stop, Hey What’s That Sound since the actual title isn’t in the lyrics) in December 1966, and it was released fiftyone years ago this month, January 1967. There was indeed a thing or two happening there – a cultural revolution brewing that encompassed everything from film to music to women’s rights.
Don’t think something’s happening here?
You haven’t been paying attention, a coping strategy that’s gaining ground lately. There are a number of perfectly good reasons to bury your head in the sand – or your phone, most likely – and ignore all the brouhaha, but take care it doesn’t cause you to walk right into the middle of it in 2018, or miss all the fun because you were taking a selfie. –Michael Abedin
Homeless to Billionaire From Thailand with Love by Dr. Joe Vitale
H
ere’s the true story of yet another person who went from homeless to great success using The Law of Attraction, The Secret, and other self-help books and principles. I’m in Bangkok, Thailand as I write this. I was flown here to present at a two-day seminar on The Missing Secret to Success. The people were warm and loving, the event was sold out, the traffic was awful, the food was amazing, and the Thai massages between my presentations were deeply and unforgettably relaxing.
Dr. Joe Vitale, a star in The Secret, is a bestselling author, musician, speaker, and coach. His latest book is Greatest Law of Attraction Quotes. You can have his free e-book, Attract Money Now, at www.AttractMoneyNow.com His main website is www.MrFire.com Joe with Andres Pira
6
But that’s not the good part.
One of the organizers is a young man from Sweden. His name is Andres Pira. He left Sweden fifteen years ago, out of desperation. He was twenty years old and unhappy. His life was going nowhere, he was tired of the ten months a year of darkness, and he needed a way out. His grandfather died, leaving him two thousand dollars, and he used it to buy a ticket to the warmest country he could get to fast. That turned out to be Thailand. But Thailand was not an easy road for a young man with no contacts, no experience, and no ability to speak the Thai language. Within a short period, he was homeless. He slept on the beach. He was too embarrassed to ask his family for help. He contacted a friend and confessed that he was desperate. The friend said, “I won’t send you any money, but I’ll send you a book that might help you.”
A book?
Andres was upset. He’s starving and his friend is going to send a book? The book was The Secret. Andres read it. And as he did, something awakened within him. He started to realize his thoughts were creating his reality. Since he was homeless, he didn’t like what his thoughts had created. He decided to learn and use the Law of Attraction to create a better life for himself.
The next book he read was Napoleon Hill’s classic, Think and Grow Rich. After that, he read Zero Limits, my first book on ho’oponopono. He was committed to changing his life.
He succeeded, too.
Today he runs nineteen companies, has one hundred fifty employees, and is a billionaire. He’s one of the largest real estate developers in all of Southeast Thailand. One of his biggest properties in 2018 will be managed by Best Western Premiere. But he also owns a gym, a law office, a gas station, several coffee shops, and more. He’s only thirty-five years old. He told me this story after picking me up at the Bangkok airport. I was fascinated. Even though I had just spent twenty-four hours traveling – with twenty hours of that in the air – I was engaged, and wanted to know more. “You have to tell your story,” I said. “This is inspiring. People look at you and see a billionaire. They don’t see the homeless man who read self-help books and took action to recreate his life.” “I have never publicly told my story,” Andres confessed. “It would seem like bragging.” “It’s not bragging to admit you were homeless,” I explained. “How is being homeless a bragging point?” He laughed. I told him of my own struggle from homelessness, through poverty, on to global success.
I tell my story not to brag, but to inspire.
I wanted Andres to do the same. “You are hosting your first event this weekend,” I said. “Why not stand up at it and tell your story?” He had never considered that idea. Andres was nervous, but I coached him on how to present his case. To his credit, he agreed to make his speaking debut at his own event. He did, too. And he was great. People loved this young man and his honest rags to riches story. Andres explained how he read The Secret, and then moved on to other books by the teachers of The Secret, including me. In fact, Andres is so grateful for the impact on his life by my books and audios that he is taking me to Phuket, Thailand for a week of rest, all at his own expense. As we continued our ride, he told me of various turning points in his life.
But Andres and his soon-to-be wife liked the Thai custom of not getting, but giving. So on his birthday, he went to orphanages with bags of gifts. His fiancée did the same on her birthday. They felt fantastic in making a difference in these children’s lives. But Andres discovered another benefit to this giving. “Right then I noticed my businesses began to grow and multiply. Somehow my giving triggered a receiving that I didn’t expect.” Of course, I’ve written about giving in numerous books, including Attract Money Now. But it’s always fortifying to hear of others proving the power of giving. The more I spoke to Andres, the more I realized he deeply integrated what he learned from me and other authors, and yet made it his own and went beyond it. I told Andres that he needed to write his life story, including his life and business lessons, and his meditations and visualizations. Whether he wrote it, I wrote it, or someone else wrote it, I could see it transforming millions of readers. Andres and I will be spending more time together in Phuket, so I may be able to get a fire started under him to share his life with you. I hope you find this story as inspiring as I do. Again and again, we keep seeing evidence that the Law of Attraction works. But you have to not just read about it, but also apply it. Andres did, and look at him now. You can be next. PS: Great news! I convinced Andres to let me help him with his book. You can expect it in 2019. It’ll reveal his story, secrets, principles, meditations, extreme sports insights, multiple business practices, and more. Meanwhile, learn from him and his wife, as I have. My birthday is in December. I plan to turn the tables on custom and my past and make this sixty-fourth birthday one of giving, on the day I usually receive. You don’t need to wait until your birthday to give. Look around. Someone needs your kindness. Why not give right now?
One was about giving.
Both he and his fiancé decided to start giving on their birthdays. The traditional custom in most countries is to receive gifts on your birthday.
Joe Vitale’s latest book, Greatest Law of Attraction Quotes, is available in paperback or for any Kindle reader. https://smile.amazon.com/Greatest-Law-Attraction-QuotesVitale-ebook/dp/B075VMFRLN/

Resonate What we’ve got here is… failure to communicate. – Strother Martin, Cool Hand Luke Funny how prescient a lot of pop culture was about fifty years ago. You got all your revolutionary rock and roll as the sun set on the Summer of Love in 1967 and battle lines started being drawn, and you got ol’ Strother Martin in 1967’s Cool Hand Luke, right after his prison captain character whops Paul Newman upside the head with a sap for being a smart aleck. No failure to communicate there. Make a career out of being smart alecky and you learn that lesson right off the bat, so to speak. Thing is, we literally have more ability to communicate right at our fingertips (in the literal sense of literally) than ever before, and the result seems to be it’s easier to get whopped upside the head. (Figuratively, in the literal sense of figuratively.) You’d like to think a complex system of virtually instantaneous electronic communication linking the entire world would usher in an era of enlightenment. Enlightenment, however, has a tricky habit of casting shadows, and those shadows can descend on you quick as the Captain’s sap on Luke’s head.
Scary thing is, it can happen just for being smart, not smart alecky.
Professional online trolling has gone from a crude, clublike political tool to a laser-sharp growth industry, and anyone who plays fair is in for a rude shock the first time they get viciously slimed for expressing well thought out and measured discourse. Even scarier than professional slimers, though, scarier than the disenfranchised whose anger is redirected into criticizing everything they come across, scaring even than vengeful tattletales with decades-old axes to grind, are the True Believers. They’ve found something far more effective than a soapbox on a street corner as a way to spread their craziness. There’s even a word for them.
8
Mumpsimus.
Gotta love a word like that, huh? Sounds like a disease – and is, in a sense. Seems a semi-literate priest in the 1500’s memorized the Latin mass without ever seeing it in print, and mispronounced the Latin word sumpsimus (which means what we have received) as mumpsimus, which meant absolutely nothing at the time. Even when his error was pointed out, the priest either refused to believe or admit he was wrong, and kept right on mumpsimussing away. Some author of the time (probably with about as much space to fill as this page) decided it would be a fine term for both a state of obstinately refusing to change a wrong-headed, prejudiced point of view in spite of all evidence to the contrary, and for someone who commits an act of mumpsimussing. The sumpsimus (what we received, remember?) of researching mumpsimus turned up some synonyms – ignorant, bigoted, that sort of thing. Tempting as it may be to change that m at the beginning to, well, a couple of other consonants, that would most likely draw the wrath of mobs of mumpsimi with a keyboard at hand. (Draw your own conclusions.) Oh, btw, the priest’s linguistic booboo is similar to other ways of confusing a word or phrase for another, like an eggcorn or a mondegreen. All of them are mistakes based on homophony – which, obviously, is someone pretending to be gay.
Limbic resonance.
Definitely time for a new form of communication for a new year. January’s cover from regular contributor Amanda Sage, Limbic Resonance, would work. Get the vibrational frequencies of our sixth chakras linked up, tune into the Greatest Hits Channel of the universe, activate the brain’s limbic network of emotional resonance. Here’s how she describes it in a poem she wrote for the piece: I see you seeing me, seeing me seeing you. Our prayers are entwined. Namaste.

2018 PURPLE RAIN, PURPLE RAIN by Folade Speaks
I only want to see you laughing In the purple rain Purple rain, purple rain – Prince, Purple Rain The Pantone color for graphic designers for 2018 has been announced, an interesting one considering increased focus on spirituality and soul growth in 2017. As a recent meme points out, these three years are a chrysalis for many: 2016 – The Caterpillar 2017 – The Cocoon 2018 – The Butterfly As we crawl from accepting old belief systems that no longer serve us and fly into our authentic Soul callings, it’s alluring that the color for 2018 is Violet. Think about Amethyst, Super 7, The Violet Flame, The Sahasrara/Crown Chakra. Think of Lepidolite, the nutritional value of purple vegetables and fruits. I’m remembering purple jams and beets, delicately poured into canning jars and packed tightly in our basement to nurture us through winters.
I’m meditating with lavender, the magic of wisteria. Violet is royal, saffron crocus, the color of the doors of witches, the beauty of clematis and irises. Think of the violet that hugs the flames of a crackling fire, how the eye wants to rest there.
How healing, the color purple.
If I step back from daydreaming up violet things, back to the Pantone, this leads to how significantly 2018 is tied to mysticism, spirituality, and honoring the Crown chakra. It’s not a coincidence, so I wish you a purposeful 2018 and offer some crystal recommendations – the purple bones of Mother Nature, and how their powers can assist you in 2018. Amethyst. Of the purple crystals, Amethyst is premiere. It helps you sleep deeper, calms insomnia, supports sobriety. Amethyst chunks and cathedral formations are so incredibly breathtaking, sometimes containing calcite deposits within their clusters, mimicking the cosmos. Place an Amethyst geode in your home for 2018. This stunning formation will bring in the energy of the galaxy and stars. Charoite. A must-have for healers, lightworkers, empaths,. As we work on Higher Chakras above the crown, it helps connect and balance incoming energies. Since it’s important for those working within the higher chakras to ground their energies, Charoite is a good friend to have, supporting connection with Source and the grounding energies of Gaia. Fluorite. Desire to let go and seek the flow of life in 2018? Fluorite is a must. Its Latin derivative, fluo, means flow. Purple Fluorite supports psychic evolution and deflects psychic attack. Like Selenite and Shungite, great to have where electromagnetic energies lurk. Lepidolite. A go-to for those depressed, grieving, experiencing discomfort from pain, feeling out of balance, needing concentration or protection. Lepidolite is a nurturing crystal containing lithium. As with many purple crystals, it supports the crown chakra, a great choice for meditation. Phosphosiderite. This milky lavender stone is a powerhouse for softening tension and calming the nervous system. Phosphosiderite extracts negative energy from the torso, soothing and restoring organs housed within it, like lungs and heart. It balances the chakra system, aiding communication with the spirit world, and past life recall. Super 7. Seven crystals in one! Quartz, Amethyst, Goethite, Lepidocrocite, Rutile, Smokey Quartz, and Cacoxenite. Rutile, one of the most significant fractal forces of the crystal world, connects things. Meditating with Super 7 brings together all the beneficial, highly resonating energies of all seven crystals. Other violet and purple gems worth researching and collecting for 2018 are Purple Chalcedony (kal-sed-on-ee), Purpurite, Smithsonite, Spirit Quartz, Stichtite, and Sugilite. Folade Speaks is an aura practitioner and energy-clearing consultant at Nature’s Treasures in Austin. www.NTRocks.com

SOMETIMES YOU FEEL LIKE A NUT Bach flower remedies, walnuts, and the C-word by Michael Abedin In the 1930’s, English physician Edward Bach left a thriving London practice and moved to a cottage in a seaside village in Wales to continue his research into natural ways to heal his patients. It was the equivalent of closing down a present-day plastic surgery clinic in Dallas to move to Port Aransas, but Bach eased right in, building his own furniture, growing a garden, and turning a pint or two with the boys down at the pub now and again. His methodology up to that point involved becoming a careful observer of human nature in every setting, from office visits by his patients to dinner parties, until he became so intuitive he could feel his patients’ mental and emotional states – if they were angry, he felt angry, if they were sad, he felt sad – and then wandering fields and meadows until he found a flower that made him feel better when he held it. He’d then distill it down homeopathically (after initially spending months scraping dew off flowers at dawn) and catalog its symptomology, eventually creating thirty-eight remedies -- essences, as he called them. Some combination of them, he said, could address just about any mental or emotional state before it turned into physical symptomology.
Say what?
Deep down on a quantum level, all matter is energy, vibrating at different frequencies. If one of your frequencies is out of whack, it’s like the concert that’s you has a guy playing flat notes. The homeopathically enhanced vibrational frequency of the correct remedy is like a pitch pipe, entraining out of whack frequencies back in tune with the rest of the band. In physics, it’s considered resonance, where the vibrating frequencies of an external system or force bumps the frequency of another system up a notch. It raises its vibration, in other words, allowing bad vibes to become good ones. You can take a particular remedy by itself for an acute state of stress, or combined with a few others in a long-term combination – your own personalized 30-Day (Oh, what the heck, why not?) Bachtail. ™
A tough nut to crack.
A good base for any Bachtail is the one for big transitions and advancing life stages – you know, everybody’s favorite C-word. Yep. Change. Big change, little change, spare change, physical, mental, and emotional change. Walnut is the go-to remedy for when you’re in the boat, oars in the water, you can see the other side of the river – and you can’t quite push off. Like a good skydiving instructor, it
gives you a little nudge when you need it most, and it also gives you a protective shield against outside influences, especially the ones trying to pull you back when it’s time to move on – the Sirens luring you back to he rocks singing their sweet song. Don’t go, don’t go. We’ll miss you so.
What’s up that’s getting you down?
Divorce, moving somewhere else, new job, no job, hormonal craziness? That old bugaboo, the healing crisis, where you get worse before you get better? Crack open a bottle of Walnut. Don’t crack open an actual walnut, though, unless you just want a snack. It won’t have the same energetic signature or effect of the flower, the concentrated essence of the Walnut tree preserved in Bach’s remedy. Bach’s original essences can be a tad pricey for occasional personal or professional use, but it’s pretty easy to build up a six-pack of basic ones, and Walnut’s a good place to start. If you’re just getting acquainted with them, it’s a good idea to work with an experienced flower remedy consultant who has all the remedies and can help you choose. Speaking of smooth transitions… Michael Abedin is a Reiki Master Teacher and (coincidentally enough) an experienced flower remedy consultant. NEW YEAR’S INTENTIONS A method that feels good and works by Breya Saint John It’s the beginning of 2018 and you know what that means – New Year’s resolutions. Depending on your past with this tradition, you may feel excited about ways you’ll grow this year, or you might roll your eyes thinking, They never work anyway, so why bother? It’s widely known New Year’s Resolutions rarely succeed, but that doesn’t mean you can’t use the opportunity to grow. There’s a way to manifest desires without setting massive goals that cause stress. That doesn’t mean this approach isn’t about dreaming big. With this method, you’ll learn how to aim high by manifesting incremental changes at key dates throughout the year.
Large goals must be broken down into bite size chunks.
Otherwise, you end up feeling overwhelmed and defeated. It’s wise to set intentions on three rhythms – the year, the quarter, and the month. If you prefer to work in alignment with the Earth’s cycles instead of the Gregorian calendar, set your intentions for the year on the Winter Solstice, the changing of seasons on the solstices and equinoxes, and every month on the New Moon. Yearly intentions ought to be something broad, an overarching goal you want to see come to fruition in your life – finding a way to earn money that’s in alignment with your being, building a successful healing practice – practice, life changes you can look back at and think, Yeah, that was big, and boy am I happy to have worked towards that change.
Pro tip 1:
Keep a card with intentions written down, somewhere you look every day. Your day planner or wallet are great options. Remember to write intentions as first-person sentences, so you can read them as invocations. If you think about the year’s intention as a book, the season’s goal is like a chapter, a building block to lead towards
12
the realization of your yearly intention. If you’re creating the healing practice of your dreams, an excellent first intention might be to hone your vision of what that practice looks like. Winter’s a wonderful time for this, as energies lend themselves well to contemplation and strategizing. Monthly goals are like sections within the chapter, immediate things to work on daily. If working with moon cycles, the seed of your intention is best sewn on the night of the New Moon. It grows in intensity throughout the month as the moon waxes, and integrates as the moon wanes. This is a lovely way not only to create a habit of setting monthly intentions, but also to create a stronger connection with the Earth. If the season’s intention is to clarify the vision of your dream practice, the month’s intention might be to increase your awareness of anything about your practice that no longer serves you or your clients, aspects that can be shed to birth a practice more in alignment with your highest vision. The darkness can only be healed if first brought into the light.
Pro tip 2:
Be radically honest with yourself. As external realities are reflections of your internal fields, manifesting your intentions usually requires a willingness to go deep, examining how you contribute to circumstances of your life. Dedicating yourself to a path of growth using this method, or any other, is an investment in yourself that serves not only you, but those around you. It’s best to serve from an overflowing cup, not an empty one. Often, the definition of health is limited to your physical body or mind, but other arenas can have huge impacts as well. Spiritual health takes into account all areas of your life, so pick an area in need of healing that inspires you. Imagine what life could be like if your business finally operated smoothly, or you had enough financial abundance not simply to survive – but actually thrive. The art of learning to love your body Study the history of art and you’re studying the history of, well – us. Art is a representation of how we see ourselves in the world, from stick figures on cave walls to the Mona Lisa to social media. Think Facebook and such are about how you see the world? Wrong. They represent your chance to have some control over how the world sees you, giving rise to a whole new set of issues around commenting on and criticizing physical appearance – especially for women.
Art can be an escape.
A new expressive arts class for women focuses on celebrating the human body as the most complex, beautiful, resilient organism on this planet, an amazing vessel we go through cycles of loving and neglecting, a primal creative partner that allows a woman to connect with an image of herself – with a canvas as her companion. She can then work with the life-size image, inquiring about what needs to happen next through movement, writing, sound, and unconventional visual art techniques. This creative journey allows a woman to take an emotional, spiritual, and physical look at her relationship with her body, in a safe space. Much has been said lately about body shaming – but shame, like most negative emotions, has its roots in fear. The ability to move through fear with playfulness, courage, and ease is a skill, one that can be learned by: • Moving into your creative mind and playing there. • Experiencing the freedom of expression. • Listening to your body’s wisdom as you identify and work with self-judgment and criticism.

Art should be crazy and fun.
It can lead you safely into uncharted territories where you can learn new things about yourself and grow your emotional intelligence. Joanna Coburn, an Expressive Arts facilitator certified through Pamela Underwood Studios, offers a oneday, six-hour introduction to the five-day workshop created by Underwood, founder of Bodywriting. “Exploring your creativity through expressive arts,” she explains, “can help you create a new relationship with your body as you journal, move, write, and play, especially if you walk away with a piece of art that represents your experience – a beautiful print of your unique body.” Joanna Coburn’s Grand Mesa Expressive Arts Studio offers an Expressive Arts workshop for women January 6 and upcoming dates. FLU SHOTS
Should you, or shouldn’t you? by Dr. Matthew Carpenter, DDS, NMD It’s that time again. Flu season’s here, and with it, a constant barrage of reminders to get your annual flu shot. Interestingly, though, what you’re being told about the influenza vaccine’s effectiveness and the reality are two very different stories. In January 2015, U.S. government officials admitted that, in most years, flu shots are, at best, fifty to sixty percent effective at preventing lab-confirmed type A or B influenza requiring medical care. Flu vaccines are, by nature, a tricky business. Influenza viruses constantly evolve, and public health officials have to guess at least six months before flu season starts which type A and B virus strains will predominantly be in circulation so drug companies can manufacture vaccines. When the strains chosen don’t match strains actually causing most of the disease in any given flu season, the vaccine’s failure rate significantly increases. Even when there’s a good match, flu vaccine’s effectiveness is estimated to be between forty and sixty percent, meaning, at best, public health officials believe you have a sixty percent lower chance of not getting sick with influenza if you get a flu shot – but it could be as low as forty percent.
Put another way, it’s a coin toss no matter which way you look at it.
Before reviewing influenza vaccines, it’s important to remember the majority of respiratory influenza-like illness that people experience during any given flu season is not type A or B influenza. When you get a sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, low-grade fever, body aches, and cough, most of the time it’s another type of viral or bacterial respiratory infection unrelated to influenza viruses Some other interesting facts abut flu vaccines: Research published in 2014 concluded resistance to influenza-related illness in persons over nine years old in the U.S. was greatest among those who had not received a flu shot in the previous five years. The flu vaccine may also increase your risk of contracting other, more serious influenza infections. Canadian researchers found people who’d received seasonal flu vaccine in 2008 had twice the risk of getting sick with the pandemic H1N1 “swine flu” in 2009, compared to those who didn’t receive a flu shot the previous year. A 2009 U.S. study compared health outcomes for children between six months and age eighteen who do and do not get annual flu shots, finding children who receive influenza
16
vaccinations have a three times higher risk of influenza-related hospitalization, with asthmatic children at greatest risk. Statin drugs, taken by one in four Americans over age forty-five, may undermine your immune system’s ability to respond to the influenza vaccine. After vaccination, antibody concentrations were thirty-eight to sixty percent percent lower in statin users over sixty-five, compared to non-statin users the same age. Antibody concentrations were also reduced in younger people who took statins.
Study suggests flu vaccination during pregnancy can cause miscarriage.
In 2009, reports of miscarriage following administration of the pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) swine flu vaccine started emerging. Dozens of women claimed they lost their babies hours or days after getting the pH1N1 vaccine, which had not been tested on pregnant women (or, if it was, evidence was never published). Not surprisingly, these instances were passed off by health officials as coincidental. After all, miscarriages do happen, for any number of different reasons. Alas, scientific findings published September 25, 2017 in the medical journal Vaccine suggest this spike in miscarriage reports may not have been a fluke after all. Researchers found women who had received a pH1N1-containing flu shot two years in a row were, in fact, more likely to suffer miscarriage within the following twenty-eight days. While most miscarriages occurred during the first trimester, several also took place in the second trimester. Finally, remember routine ingredients in vaccines include Thimerasol (or ethyl mercury), aluminum (to promote antibody response), formaldehyde (as a disinfectant), and ethylene glycol (anti-freeze), to name a few. Research has shown that, “If a person has had five consecutive flu shots, their chance of contracting Alzheimers disease is ten times higher than the non-vaccinated person.” Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health is an Integrative Biologic Dentist and Board Certified Naturopathic Physician, offering natural oral care products incorporating essential oils, drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, non-surgical treatment of gum disease, safe mercury and root canal removal, and natural heavy metal elimination. YOU’RE FRIED! What EMF’s can do to you, and what you can do about it by Michael Abedin
They’re everywhere.
Like silent, stealthy ninja assassins, they infiltrate your home and business, stalk your kids at school, creep up on you while you sleep. They can steal your health and vitality, and you probably won’t even know they’re there. If you could see them emanating from power lines, electrical wiring, cell towers, cell phones, computers, Wi-Fi, smart meters, smart appliances, and fluorescent lights in and around your home, it would look like you’re on the receiving end of a shower of arrows by a band of invisible Comanche.
The unusual suspects.
Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) and Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) are the culprits, and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a branch of the World Health Organization, has classified them since 2011 as a 2B Carcinogen, something possibly causing cancer in humans. If possibly (rather than most definitely) gives you pause, keep in mind criteria for IARC classifications lean towards the cautious side. HIV, HPV, synthetic food coloring, methylmercury, and parathion – a deadly pesticide developed by the Nazis – are also in the 2B category, for instance. Not being able to prove a definite link between a single factor and a specific condition – EMF’s and cancer, vaccines and autism, glyphosate and just about everything– is an easy out for industries that want to keep producing and marketing them in this country, and for people who want to keep using them. Carcinogens aside, a partial list of other things shown by research and/or anecdotal evidence to have EMF exposure as a potential contributor would include: Sleeplessness Heart issues Fatigue Autoimmune disease Anxiety High Blood Pressure Depression Neurological Issues Headaches Seizures Migraines Autism
Lightning strikes.
Any disease or disorder is the result of a complex set of conditions that eventually wear your defenses down, sort of
like being pecked to death by ducks. Even if you produce your own healthy food, have clean air and water, exercise and meditate and all that, getting dosed constantly by electromagnetic frequencies isn’t doing you any good. If nothing else, sleeplessness from being EMF’ed all night will wear your defenses down. Concentrated doses of electromagnetic energy are so powerful, there’s a theory that lightning crashing into primeval seas – whether from the hand of God or a nasty thunderstorm – was the catalyst causing organic compounds to begin mutating and combining into early, primitive life forms. Countless little EMF lightning strikes day in and out would, theoretically, have a similar effect on your own organic compounds, maybe the tipping point for them to begin mutating into some very unpleasant life forms – think viruses and cancer cells.
So should you wrap yourself in a foil suit and wear a colander on your head?
Austin’s pretty much past the point where that would be socially acceptable in public – and it might even do you more harm than good, according to one researcher. Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter is the leader of the North America Sleep Medicine Society, a medical organization setting standards for health care, education, and research. A neuroscientist with a background in pediatric medicine, pediatric neurology, sleep medicine, quantum mechanics, particle physics, and heliophysics, he’s been researching the biological effects of electromagnetic radiation exposure, and its link with biochemical restoration pathways during sleep, for over a decade. Asked about the foil suit and colander approach, he smiles. “Wrapping anything in metal, whether it’s your body, a building, or your cell phone, might keep some EMF’s out, but it could also trap them inside, exposing you to even higher concentrations.” He’s developed a science-based testing protocol and multi-stage remediation process for existing structures – shielding wiring, changing lighting, several other remodeling aspects. He’s also consulting with local builders and realtors, with an aim towards designing new construction that’s virtually EMFfree – a safe haven, a well-shielded clean room in a wired world. “Our goal is to get to a reading of zero, and we’ve gotten very close.” with the techniques we’ve developed.” If EMF exposure is potentially harmful to relatively healthy adults with a developed immune system, think what it could be doing to children – born and unborn – and people with compromised immune systems. Then envision a different future. Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter will speak and answer questions at the Live a Holistic Life Workshop and Fair, Jan. 27, 11am-4pm. 1108 S. 8th St. 78704. PRIDE OR POWER by Christina Allen There’s much talk about owning our power these days. From spiritual teachings, we find our power lies in our authenticity and willingness to surrender our agendas to an intelligence beyond our own. There is also the will of ego, however, based on a need for personal gain and status. While spiritual power requires getting out of our own way, this kind of “power” is driven by pride, and lends itself toward abuse. When someone is spiritual, but has not done their personal work, sometimes the two are confused.
A deadly sin.
Pride, at its best, is a positive sense of self. We’re proud that we’re the first one in our family to graduate from college, for example. While good self-esteem is essential, pride has an uncanny capacity for overindulgence and abuse. In fact, it’s considered one of the seven deadly sins. At it’s worst, pride seductively lures us in to defend our inadequacies, at any price. We may choose to lie or fight dirty, for example, just to claim a victory. While we’ve won the argument, at what cost is this to our soul? Feeling dirty, we look for another win, and so it goes. As the famous Taoist teacher Lao Tzu says, Whether you go up the ladder or down it, your position is shaky. Stand with your two feet on the ground.” Our main challenge is not to maintain our position, but to anchor into our truth. Our integrity is our status, and it’s our currency. It’s up to us to maintain its value, and not trade it in to come out on top. Pride overrides vulnerability. Rooted in insecurities, it takes people off center, and makes them want to show the world what they’re made of. Someone may feel shame, for example, so they try to shame you. They may feel impotent, so they try to intimidate you. As soon as you engage them to defend yourself, however, you, too, have stepped into pride, choosing to win over standing your ground.
Owning spiritual power – or owning pride?
Developing spiritual power is a journey of self-discovery,
18
where the more baggage and limited beliefs we lose, the more receptive to divine guidance we become. When we clear out the wounds and shame, we find ourselves no longer susceptible to the manipulations of others, nor are we driven by our own agendas. We learn to listen, and to trust in both ourselves and in the divine guidance of Spirit. It is a beautiful and magical path, pure in essence. Unfortunately, spiritual power can easily be confused with, and corrupted by, pride. We may be highly intuitive, but if we’re still wounded we may confuse the voices of the ego for the voices of Spirit if our status is at stake. Further, we may start to believe this power is a commodity that can be owned and contained, compelling us to lord it over others, and abuse our standing. Watch for attempts by anyone to belittle you with condescension, manipulation, and anger, or by provoking in you fear and shame. This is not power in any true sense – this is pride trying to gain the upper hand. Many a leader and institution uses these tactics to take from you your power. It’s not that they’re more powerful, however, it’s that you have given your own power away to them, by stepping off your center and believing them over yourself. Owning our power is knowing who we are, and not colluding with the projected weaknesses and agendas of a wounded being. Don’t let someone tell you what’s wrong with you. Do your homework. Learn to recognize what sends you into pride, and when it’s interfering. Then stand in your truth, hold your ground, and align with Spirit. This is owning your power. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). Finally, organic mercury is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract, where it’s absorbed and eventually accumulates in the brain, kidney, liver, hair, and skin. Organic mercury is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and placenta, leading to neurological symptoms and birth defects.
Something’s fishy.
MERCURY RISING
How you’re exposed to the second most potent neurotoxin on the planet – and what you can do about it. by Gwieneverea Brandon, MD Mercury is a naturally occurring chemical found in rock in the earth’s crust, including deposits of coal. There are three different forms of mercury – elemental, inorganic, organic – and it’s surprising how many ways it can turn up. Elemental mercury is commonly found in liquid form, notable for being in thermometers, but it can also be found in batteries, dental fillings, fluorescent bulbs, and in the production of paper, photography, and jewelry. Inorganic mercury is usually in its salt form, as a white powder or crystal found in cosmetics, disinfectants, embalming fluid, and in industries like ink manufacturing, mirror silvering, and the perfume and tattoo industry. Organic mercury, mainly known as methylmercury, can be found in contaminated fish, antiseptics, germicidal agents, and in industries dealing with farming, paper manufacturing, and vaccines.
Human exposure to each type of mercury can have different effects on the body.
Elemental mercury easily vaporizes at room temperature, and is well absorbed through inhalation (breathing), leading to acute symptoms like difficulty breathing, swollen and bleeding gums, and a bad cough. Inorganic mercury is highly toxic and corrosive, entering the body through the mouth or skin. It accumulates in the kidneys, where it eventually leads to kidney damage. It’s also very slowly eliminated from the body, and is therefore able to lead to significant central nervous system accumulation and toxicity.
20
The most common causes of mercury exposure are methylmercury from the ingestion of seafood, inorganic mercury from mercury vapor from dental fillings, food, and occupational exposure. The fish with the highest mercury content are tilefish, swordfish, shark, king mackerel, and bigeye and ahi tuna. These fish consume mercury-contaminated vegetation, and proteins in their bodies are able to bind over ninety percent of the consumed methylmercury that can’t be cooked out, no matter at how high a temperature the fish are cooked. An interesting and scary fact is that over three thousand lakes in the US have been closed to fishing, due to mercury contamination. Mercury released from an amalgam filling daily by the act of chewing is anywhere from two to twenty-eight micrograms per facet surface per day – of which eighty percent is absorbed into the body. Occupational exposure to mercury is significant in the manufacturing of batteries, thermometers, and barometers, and in agricultural, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Although the pharmaceutical industry has made great strides in eliminating mercury from many of its preparations, for many, many years, diuretics, antibacterial agents, antiseptics, and laxatives contained mercury. Mercury toxicity can present acutely, but it can also present as non-specific symptoms – fatigue, anxiety, depression, odd paresthesia (pins and needles sensation), weight loss, memory loss, and difficulty concentrating. These symptoms are due to low-grade chronic mercury exposure. Mercury can also become deposited in the thyroid, breast, heart, muscles, adrenals, liver, kidneys, skin, sweat glands, pancreas, intestine, lungs, salivary glands, testes, and prostate, affecting the function of each of these organs.
Unfortunately, everyone has been exposed to mercury.
Not everyone, however, exhibits symptoms. Prior to starting a mercury detox, it’s important to know your overall heavy metal load and mineral levels. Knowing where you’ve started helps as a guide for where you end up, after completing a detox. There are several tools for measuring the heavy metals in the body. One reliable method is a hair analysis, used to determine metal toxicity and/or mineral deficiency. Hair contains minerals that are deposited as hair grows. Hair cut close to the scalp provides information about the mineral activity in the hair that took place over the past three to four months. Hair metal levels correlate with metal levels in the body. Deviations in hair levels often appear prior to obvious symptoms, and can be a valuable preliminary tool for predicting the development of physiological abnormalities. A hair analysis helps to monitor the effects of chelation, and
provides a mineral snapshot about your metabolic rate, energy levels, sugar and carbohydrate tolerance, stage of stress, immune system, and glandular activity.
SANDPAPER, NAIL POLISH, AND CHEMICALS
There are several things that can be done to decrease your mercury load and exposure.
First, it’s important to reduce your exposure. Choose fish low in mercury – wild-caught salmon, shrimp, sole, anchovies. Research ingredients in your cleaning agents and cosmetics to ensure the purest of ingredients are used. Establish healthy bowel habits (a bowel movement at least once a day) by increasing your water intake and taking a probiotic. Much of the mercury in the body is eliminated in feces. An effective natural mercury detoxifier is cilantro. When using a natural detoxifier, it’s important to support your liver, which can be done by taking milk thistle, barberry, dandelion root, chaparral, and red clover. Chelation is a treatment used in medicine for removing heavy metals, including mercury, from the blood. It involves intravenous injections of a chelating agent, EDTA (ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid), a synthetic amino acid. EDTA binds to heavy metals and minerals in the blood so that they can be excreted in the urine. Chelation is scientifically proven to rid the body of excess or toxic metals, especially certain kinds like lead or mercury. Chelation therapy sessions take several hours to complete and are usually performed in a doctor’s office with monitoring. Most people need between five to thirty treatments for best results. The procedure isn’t painful for most people, but like with all injections, it’s possible to feel some burning, redness, or swelling at the injection site. There isn’t much recovery time needed after the procedure, and most people are free to drive themselves home and go about their normal day. Gwieneverea Brandon, MD, and Melissa Russ-Santiago, ND, have an integrative medicine practice that combines the best of mainstream and natural healthcare, including chelation therapy, vitamin infusions, IV vitamin C, aesthetics and anti-aging, nutritional counseling, pain management, and medical testing. What do you put on your teeth? by Jamie Lee Hardly anyone is fond of visits to the dentist. The importance of oral health eventually overrides your concerns and procrastination, however, and you go to get an oral checkup or cleaning. What you don’t always consider, though, is what you use to clean your teeth in between visits to the dentist. We grow up learning to brush our teeth with toothpaste bought at the supermarket, and don’t often take into consideration what’s in it. We’re not taught that the tens of thousands of ingredients in body care products are barely regulated at all by the FDA – including ones rubbed vigorously into your teeth and gums, where they’re absorbed directly into your circulatory and nervous system through the complex system of nerves in your mouth.
We’re also not taught our teeth have the potential to heal themselves, given the right conditions.
Typical store-bought toothpastes, such as Crest and Sensodyne, contain harsh ingredients that can strip your teeth’s innate ability to mineralize themselves, and even natural ingredients like baking soda and charcoal can be overly abrasive to the enamel surface of the teeth. The potential negative side effects of additives like sweeteners, artificial coloring and flavoring, and anti-bacterial agents are well documented. Not as well documented is that commercial toothpaste can also cover your teeth in a coating, almost like putting nail polish on your nails. As a result, your teeth can’t breathe, or re-mineralize themselves. A four-ingredient, non-abrasive base that’s free of baking soda and charcoal can be used in place of commercial formulas, using non-toxic ingredients that have the potential to rebuild and re-mineralize teeth. Bentonite clay works to pull out bacteria and coating, almost like a magnet, essentially leaving your teeth able to breathe. It also work to pull out plaque, decay, and toxins. Pink Himalayan sea salt is a natural purifier, leaving a healthy clean feeling. Calcium powder can help rebuild and re-mineralize teeth. Myrrh, wild crafted by a tribe in Kenya, has been used for years in Africa to clean, purify, mineralize, and heal teeth and gums, and can be a great help with preventing and even improving gingivitis and receding gum tissue, sometimes within weeks. Pure Harmony offers handmade body care products, including toothpowder, oil pulls, sun protection, sugar scrubs, CBD Pain Relief Oil, and CBD Lotion. (702) 351-7038, www.IAmPureHarmony.com

MINDING YOUR HABITS Hypnosis and the jungle of your brain
by Justin Bustamante Habits are born of repeating something until it’s second nature. Most are harmless, and we grow out of them. Others, however, grow with us and become destructive. As long as a habit serves, it drives behaviors your mind thinks are helpful, but what happens when the way you handled stress when you were younger doesn’t fit as an adult? You’re left thinking, why do I do that? The answer lies in the vast jungle of neurons and pathways that is your brain.
Your mind is an uncharted jungle.
As you go through life you find paths, patterns of behavior. The more you take a path, the more it widens and clears, becoming more visible, more accessible. You know it forwards, backwards, sideways, know the fruit tree where you have a snack and rest, the shortcut through the mud pit where you hop across rocks – if you miss and get dirty, who cares? You’re a kid. Over time, the fruit tree has markings where you carved the loves of your life and scratched them out, making room for pests that weakened the tree until it fell over. The mud pit’s still there, but you’re older, heavier – whenever you make it onto a rock it sinks, you get dirty.
The journey isn’t the same.
The path still gets you there, but the way you interact with the environment changed – and it’s the only way you’ve known up to this point. You stand at your path, thinking up ways never to go down it again. You put up a sign, a positive affirmation, reminding you to find a better way – but when the wind’s strong, the sign falls. You put up negative reinforcement, an electrified fence across the path. One day you’re in a rush, disarm the fence, fly past dead trees and mud-pits. When you get across, you ask, Why am finding a new way? That worked so well. You’re back where you started, only dead trees are taken over by mud-pits, and mud’s pouring onto the path. You grab your blade, cut new paths. With time, you take certain paths more than others, dangerously close to your old ways – and find yourself falling back on what’s familiar.
24
This can be a frustrating cycle when you’re trying to kick smoking, or handle stress better – maybe deadly if a habit’s extreme. A Wellness Hypnotist specializes in helping create new pathways while addressing old habits, so there’s no risk of falling back on them. Here’s an easyto-follow guide that resembles the process we go through in a group or one-on-one session to eradicate old habits and install new ones, without the constant reminder of where not to go. Set a goal. Don’t stop at wanting to lose weight or handle stress better. Think about how that will feel. Plan everything – a goal without a plan is just a wish. Get leverage on yourself – put up a sign. No one knows you like you. If negative-re-enforcement works, start there. If self-torture isn’t your cup of tea, find something that discourages or distracts you from unwanted behavior. Find a replacement – plant bushes. Train the brain. Smoker? Take three deep breaths to relax, chew gum. Watching your figure? Drink more water to feel full. Make sure you do it. Your mind wants to push you down familiar roads. Put energy into replacements. Energy means emotion. You didn’t just go down the path on good days – you went on bad days, sad days, hungry days when you found the fruit tree where you took the loves of your life. Feed the replacement the energy you did the old path, so your brain gets the message it’s time to move on. Practice, practice, practice. Habits form over time, but understanding key principles like emotion and how you’ll feel reaching your goal is a step toward changing quickly. Activate resources. The fun part. If emotion’s your number one resource, their source is even better. Your unconscious/sub-conscious can be your best ally when you get it working with you, not for you. It doesn’t know the difference between imagination and real life, so get lost imagining everything you hope to gain and feel when you reach your goal. Laugh, smile, cry, explore. It’s better to be in control of what’s running through your un/sub than to leave it to its own devices – again. Justin Bustamante is a Neurolinguist and Certified Wellness Hypnotist. I really want to make a difference in the world and would like to know the best way that I could do that. Kim, 57, Austin, TX Dear Kim, Happiness comes from within. And because you are happy within, your outsides are going to reflect your insides beautifully. What you will probably end up doing is designing a life of playful endeavorings. Just make sure that these endeavorings make money, because if you make money, you will continue the process. You will definitely have a nice life because you are fulfilling your life purpose. You came here to write books and become an author. Channeling is where it’s at. If you build a little altar with Michael and Maitreya, they will start gifting you the words for your first book. Dear Ashtara, My relationship with my stepdaughter has not been the best, and yet we live together; what are my possibilities to live better? Also, I am looking for a career path and I am very interested in writing books, but I am not sure about myself and what to do. Will appreciate your answer. Veronika, 47, Buda, Texas. Dear Veronika, Your stepdaughter has her mind on leaving, so know that this, too, will pass. You’ve done everything you could and beyond. It looks to us like you have had a nice life. It also seems that when you tune in you are getting lots of answers. These answers are coming from Lord Maitreya, Sandalfon & Gabriel. When you were born, your angel Gabriel asked you to become an architect, engineer, artist, pianist, or crafts. It looks like you would make a fine storeowner and be able to do that for a lot of years. It also seems that you could have a gallant partner that could help to finance such a great venture.

Within six months you should have a person in mind. Get the job done and you will eventually become healthier, wealthier and wiser. Dear Ashtara, I am drawn to a career in water. Should I pursue boating or something else? And how should I go about achieving success? Stefanie, Austin, TX Dear Stefanie, When you were born, you decided you were going to be a designer, architect, lawyer, dancer, builder, coordinator, and/or Excalibur teacher. If you dedicate yourself to any of those, you will find freedom. However, you could plan on becoming a lawyer, which is something you probably have not wanted to consider. It would be nice for you to start a career that can last until you are in your 70s. Thus, you will make more money, have more stability, and be able to work for firms anywhere. While you are studying, get your fill of the things that are enticing you now. Even if it takes six years, we think it is worth it. Your angels are all around you giving you this information. Archangel Gabriel will help you.
