MEET THE COVER PHOTO COUPLE ...Anais & Jon Photos by: Allison Jeffers Photography

Jonathan and I met when we were cast in Cornerstone Church’s Christmas Pageant 2013. I auditioned and got the part of Mary and he was Joseph. We spent a lot of time rehearsing with each other during a two-month period before the show, and we felt an instant connection from the first time we spoke. Jonathan had our proposal planned since May 28th, 2016. We were on a spring trip to the New Mexico
mountains where my family stayed in a beautiful cabin in the woods for a few days. During this time, Jonathan found some time alone with my parents. He asked them for my hand in marriage and they gave him their blessing. Over the next couple of months Jonathan purchased my engagement ring, shared with all of our family members what he planned to do for the proposal, and kept it a secret for 3 months as he used his lunch hours at
work to spend the extra time planning out the smallest of details. Jonathan contacted his aunt and uncle who live in South Padre Island and asked if they would be willing to allow him to use their gorgeous beach house as the location he could propose at. They were completely overjoyed and went above and beyond to make the day so special for us. We always took an annual beach trip
with the family down to South Padre towards the end of summer, so Jonathan knew continued on page 15

JC and I met when we were students at Texas A&M, but that’s as far as it went until 6 years later in 2015 when I wrote happy birthday on his Facebook wall. He was about a year into Physical Therapy school and I had just gotten my 2nd bachelor’s degree in Medical Lab Science and was working in a hospital lab as a Medical Lab Scientist. I didn’t expect any kind of reply, I was just bored and thought he was still a mighty good lookin’ fella. But it
sparked a conversation which continued for a month. I was in a wedding in the San Antonio area so we decided it was a good opportunity to finally meet up, which is when we went on our first of many dates: walking around the Alamo in the pouring rain, dinner, and Top Golf. Fun fact (which I realized a couple years into dating) is that I had a Top Golf card from 2013 in my wallet that I never used with the exact

Rethink the Bridal Party
W
When it comes to weddings, many old traditions and rules no longer apply. Your wedding party (also known as the bridal party) includes not only the people who you’ll count on to help you with planning, but also are the ones you want by your side when you walk down the aisle and say your vows. They’re your sisters, brothers, and closest friends. Why not have your favorite guy friends standing next to the bride?
Best guy friends are being honored more and more with Man of Honor title. Not only that but gal pals are also crossing over to the groomsmen territory. You can have all your best friends standing next to you at the altar now regardless of gender. A bride may want her brother by her side instead of across the aisle. The groom may want a female cousin that he grew up with stand-
ing with him at the altar. Mix-and-matching the bridal party is a new trend. It’s called a wedding party, so think of it that way. When you go to the party there are men and women and having all your best men and women friends standing beside you in your wedding pictures will be a fun party. Keep in mind that if you have a male on the maid’s side you still want him
wearing the same suit or tux as the men standing on the groom’s side. Same goes for any girls mixed among the groomsmen you still want them in a dress matching but maybe he has a girl best friend he wants standing beside him on wedding day. Consult with your wedding planner about the best method to get everyone down the aisle and to the altar for your wedding day. And enjoy your (wedding) party!
Advice from The Postal Lady Tricks to Mailing the Invitations
F
First let me say, Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! It is now time to set the date and order the invitations. The sky is the limit. This article is to give you a little more insight on what to expect when it comes time to mail your invitations. Just know that anything out of the ordinary will probably come with additional cost. Most wedding invitations with response cards can put you over an ounce, which will cost more than a regular envelope. Anything with a wax seal, bow, and square size will also come with a surcharge. If they are over 6” high or too ridged they can become a flat or a package. So know your options when it comes to mailing your invitations. You don’t want all your beautiful, hand written invitations coming back for additional postage, or worse, going postage due to the family or friends you are inviting.

The best advice I can give you is take your invitation to your local post office and have them check it for size, weight and rigidness. Another great tip is to write the address and zip code clearly and in the center of the envelope. Now, hopefully, you are armed with a little more knowledge to help you make a more informed decision. We want your wedding off to a good start! Wishing you all the best!
A Helpful Guide to Tipping at Weddings
W
Which vendors should you tip and how much and when should you? Tips are never obligatory and they are supposed to be an expression of appreciation for a good service that you receive. That said unless the service was terrible, would you walk away from a salon or restaurant without leaving one? The same applies to weddings and it is customary to show gratitude by tipping the people involved in making your wedding a success.
#1
Check your contract Many gratuities are built into the price quotes for major items like catering.
#2
Reward Extraordinary Efforts When someone goes out of their way for you to make your event special you may want to add on a little extra for them. Did our baker make last minute changes you requested for the cake? Did your bartender make sure you had a drink in hand at all time and was fast and professional with your wedding guests? Did you send hours with your planner? Tipping can be hard trying to squeeze everything into the wedding budget and, although it is not required nor expected, a small gratuity
for a job well done is a great way to show appreciation for everyone who made your wedding day run smoothly. Key people that should not be forgotten when tipping include: •
Bartenders
•
Catering – if not included in the bill
•
Delivery or setup personnel
•
Bartenders: 10 percent of the total bill (to be split among them)
•
Catering manager: $200+ or a personal gift
•
Hairstylist: 15 to 20 percent
•
Limo or bus drivers: 15 percent
•
Maitre d’hotel or headwaiter: 1 to 3 percent of food and beverage fees
•
Makeup artist: 15 to 20 percent
•
Musicians: 15 percent of fee for ceremony musicians; $25 to $50 per musician for reception
•
Photographer/videographer: If you’re paying a flat fee with no overtime, $100
•
Waiters: $20 and up each (distributed by the catering manager or maitre d’)
•
Wedding planner: 15 percent of fee or a personal gift

The 2018 Wedding Decor Trends Can you believe that we are already into the 2018 year? Wedding Season has officially hit and we are so excited to help brides with their weddings again this year. We are seeing a shift in the trends from years past of the burlap, lace, mason jars and lots of DIY. This year we will see lots of color, geometric shapes, woodsy romantic décor and texture. We are so excited to see and help create the new trends for 2018 in our bride’s vision of her special day. Geometric shapes are so fun and I have seen them everywhere already this year! It makes such a good statement piece rather it be in a suspended floral piece (hanging flowers are the trend this year) or incorporated into your centerpiece or even hanging from the ceremony trees.
Last year I saw so much pink and blush and I LOVE it. Don’t worry it’s not going anywhere this year, however you will see it paired with more bold and bright colors that even include burgundy and black. Done right it can look so good but leave this one to the professionals because, done wrong, it can look oh-so-bad.
Custom and mobile bars are also a huge trend this year and I just love seeing them pull up to a wedding. They bring so much style and presence to an event and make it fun for your guests. If it’s in the budget this season, look into these mobile bars.
The woodsy, romantic theme weddings are on trend this year and replacing the rustic theme from years past. Start looking for ferns, moss, greenery and lots of flowers to transform your wedding venue into the romantic look you are going for. There are lots of textures on trend this year and I recently even saw metallics on a wedding dress you would think no way but it actually looks so good. Metallics are replacing the rose gold from last year and I think are here to stay.

it wouldn’t make me suspicious at all. Jon came up with an excuse as to why he had to leave early to head over to his uncle’s house and I drove over with his mom an hour later. Little did I know that every single one of our family members had already gathered together at the house and were waiting to witness the special moment. When I went inside, there was a sign that read, “Follow the Rose Petals” and there were petals sprinkled all over the walkway towards the outside balcony overlooking the ocean. I was then greeted
by the sound of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” beautiful violin version playing in the background, the perfect sunset overlooking the water, and the man of my dreams with the biggest smile and happy tears streaming down his face. He gave me an unforgettable speech, got down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage… and I said YES, OF COURSE! It was the best moment of my entire life! I will never forget the day he got on one knee, with tears in both of our eyes, and our family joining us in celebration afterwards.

Uncle Bob By: Richard Spears Photography
U
“Uncle Bob” is a term that wedding photographers use to describe a wedding guest who sometimes (usually) gets in the way of the hired photographer to get a picture on his own camera or cell phone. I understand Uncle Bob. There’s usually at least one at every wedding. They want to be the FIRST one to post a video clip or a picture of the wedding on Facebook or other social media. They all know the wedding couple has hired a professional wedding photographer, but they still feel it is their responsibility to get that shot because
16
SPRING 2018
surely, they have a better view or angle than the “pro” does. They will get in the aisle while the bride is coming, or they will pop up to get the picture of “the kiss”. Uncle Bobs really bother and frustrate a lot of wedding photographers. To be totally honest, they don’t bother me. I’m going to get my shot whether Uncle Bob’s face is in it or not, and my fees are not dependent on whether it’s perfect, or whether Uncle Bob ruins it or not. It bothers the bride… a lot, and that’s why I’m writing this blog. A bride wants her wed-
hillcountryweddingsmagazine.com
ding to be perfect, and she wants her wedding pictures to be perfect. I want to make the bride happy. So here are a few suggestions on how we can block “Uncle Bob” from ruining the wedding pictures. In recent years, the popular term is an “unplugged” wedding. In unplugged weddings, guests are encouraged to turn off cell phones and cameras, and be with the couple “in the moment”. Recently I’ve experienced some guests who not only want to photograph or video the ceremony, but they come to the wedding with professional quality DSLR cameras and manage to follow the couple around from the ceremony, to the end of the reception, ending up in almost every photograph the pro takes. If I were a bride, I’d be a little upset if one of my guests gets in the way of the pro photographer that I’d spent money on. It’s like ordering a beautiful wedding cake and your Uncle Bob guest eats a big chunk of the cake before the reception begins. So HOW do we block Uncle Bob? Here are some techniques that have worked in the past with some of my
wedding clients. 1. The unplugged sign – Post a large, hand painted sign at the entrance to the ceremony with your wishes for an unplugged wedding. It seems to help. 2. Officiant or DJ announcement – Before the ceremony begins, have the officiant or DJ make an announcement about turning off all cell phones, iPads, iPhones, cameras, video recorders, etc. A good one can make this pretty entertaining. 3. Invitation reminder – Put a note in the invitation about your feelings on folks ruining wedding shots with their cell phones. 4. Personal phone call – If you know you have someone on your guest list who fancies himself/herself as a photographer, you can make a polite phone call reminding them that you have the photography covered, so they can leave their camera at home. This has the potential to upset some personalities, so be careful in how you word it. Don’t let Uncle Bob ruin your wedding pictures.
Picking a DJ
A
A DJ can make or break a party or event, so do your research and make sure to pick the right one for your big night. Spend the time to meet with the DJ and make sure he or she knows your style or preferred genre of music. Be sure to ask what kind of equipment or set-up they have. I actually had a DJ show up with CD’s at a wedding this year - YIKES!! - the transition was not a smooth one I can tell you that. Some Other Questions for your DJ: How many events are they hired for per year? How long have they been in the business? Will the person you are meeting with be the DJ, or will it be another person? What is the back-up plan if they are sick on the wedding day? How many hours of music are included in the package? Can the DJ also do the ceremony and reception music? Do they include up-lighting? Are they comfortable announcing and speaking in front of people? Because they are your MC of the night! Be sure to ask the right questions so you can feel confident knowing you have selected not only the right music - but also the right person or company to make your event go as smoothly as possible.
Workout with Your Bridal Party
L
Excerpt by: Kathleen of E+L Barre Studio
Looking to lose a couple pounds before the big day? Why not include your bridal party?! There is strength in numbers. Get your group together for a fun and fit time.
Your workout can help you to fill your dress in all the right spots with a full-body workout to tone your arms, strengthen your core, and sculpt your thighs and seat.
The three-month mark is typically crunch time for any bride counting down to her wedding day. But the term “crunch time” takes on a whole new meaning when you have 12 weeks to get in the best shape of your life.
We recommend attending at least three to four classes a week in addition to healthy
eating. A barre workout is designed to give women a feminine figure. It tightens your midsection and sculpts and defines your shoulders so you have a long and lean shape—just like a posed dancer. Your result: Better photo-
graphs and a greater sense of confidence on the big day! Another advantage to our workout: It’s proven that exercise gives you those mind-clearing benefits. In the months, weeks, and days leading up to your wedding when there is so much stress associated with the final planning, you want to make sure you have that sense of “release for an hour” as you work to clear your mind and focus on YOU!

Style & Beauty Tips for Spring By: Crystal Wiedenfeld All my picks can be purchased at Simply Serene Salon and Spa. www.simplysereneboerne.com
Let’s leave a little texture this spring, easy peasy. Wash and wear is the way to go. Just add a little product to tame your main and control the frizz and let it go. The head scarf is really on trend this spring and I must say this is one thing I absolutely want to try. There are so many options on how to wear this look. Let your imagination go to work on a style that works with your mood. For your color, pick a blonde, brown, black or silver tone. It seems to be looking like the non -dimensional colors are what’s we are still seeing a lot of for this spring. Remember you don’t always have to follow the crowd, so do what suits you and your personality.
makeup
Your fresh clean skin is what we are wanting to see for the season. This will make things much easier for us all. Do a nice light brow, some gloss and a touch of blush or bronzer for that healthy sun kissed glow, put a touch on your lid to finish up your look if you please. I think we are all ready for the sun to kiss our winter white skin away, I know I am!
clothing
I’m seeing a lot of robes or maybe something light like a kimono. Whether it’s over your clothes or over your swimmy, you are going to see this look a lot. We are also being very patriotic this season so let’s start with something that’s a little Red, White, and Blue. Outside of that, it’s a bright season full of colors and pastels. The textures will be light and flowy just like the season. Wishing you all a fabulous Spring.

Pro Tip #1
Picking the Right Officiant When planning a wedding, you always need to pick the perfect venue, dress, invitations but what about the perfect officiant? Some say picking the officiant should be on the top of the list because without one, well, you won’t officially be married. The best way to pick the right officiant is to meet them face to face. This gives you the opportunity to have the important conversation about your vows and what to prioritize on your special day. When you leave the meeting, you will know if this officiant is the one. You should leave feeling warm, excited and at peace. Make sure you talk with your officiant about everything you want included in your ceremony – candle ceremony, sand ceremony, communion and more. You also don’t want to leave out little details like whether or not they charge for attending the rehearsal. On the actual wedding day, confirm that they will arrive 30 minutes prior to the ceremony and that they will not leave until the marriage license has been signed and taken care of.

Pro Tip #2 Saving Money
Want to put your wedding money toward a down payment on a house? Consider opening a certificate of deposit (CD), especially if you’re not planning to buy for a few years. CDs tend to offer higher interest rates than savings acounts— and since you can’t touch the money for a set period of time. It can be useful if you’re usually tempted to tap into your savings for more immediate needs as well.
Engagement Story cont’d from page 7
between Fort Worth and San Antonio. (Texas, why are you so big?) It was hard - physically and emotionally exhausting but we had our fun and I fell more and more in love with his goofy, sweet, kind, smart, and feisty self. He finally had a clinical rotation in my DFW area in 2017, which is when I think our relationship accelerated up to the moment he decided on forever with me. In September 2017, I was working my birthday weekend, so when he suggested we go to Pedernales Falls the weekend after my birthday when I was off (where we had previously
been on our one-year dating anniversary in 2016), I wasn’t suspicious of his proposal intentions. Plus, we’re outdoorsy and like to take little trips when we can. We hiked down to a secluded spot in Pedernales Falls State Park; a cute little spot tucked away in the rocks and boulders of the semi-dry river bed, surrounded by green hills. It was the most beautiful weather: 70 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. I’m always taking pictures with my phone, so he suggested I just put it on video and screenshot the moments I liked instead of doing selftimer (brilliant, sneaky man).
When I set my phone against a rock and went to go pose with him, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him with music playing on his phone - a song by Cody Johnson with lyrics, “I’ve got a diamond in my pocket and my baby’s got a heart of gold.” Of course, I immediately started crying and I was so surprised I kept saying “whaaaaat?!” and forgot to answer him. We then went to a brewery, just ourselves,
to bask in our happiness together. For dinner we ate at Chili’s (my favorite) where, to my surprise, our families were waiting for us. Can’t wait to marry this sweet manly man of mine!
Vintage Style Tips and Tricks
M
Mix antiques with modern pieces for a fresh and unique look. Too many antique pieces may cause your event to feel outdated. Play with funky, contemporary pieces alongside your vintage décor to add juxtaposition and evoke surprise and curiosity from your guests. Make it personal. Incorporate pieces that have been in the family for a while to add that special, sentimental touch to your wedding or event. Familial pieces are also great for storytelling. Consider which “era of vintage” you’re working with. For example, if your wedding is very classy, elegant and whimsical, a beautiful crystal chandelier from the 1800s would be beautiful. If your era of vintage is more of the 70s or 80s, the same chandelier may not be as charming.
Visit a showroom or design studio for inspiration. Many companies like Cru Vintage Rentals provide curated collections of event setups that are sure to inspire.

WEDDING FLORAL TIPS
Spring has officially sprung in the beautiful Hill Country and we are so thrilled to see the spring flowers and blooms populate shops, homes and even the sides of roads. But most importantly, we love seeing them populate your events! The bright flowers help bring our spring weddings to life with color and delight. Similar to the farm-to-table restaurant concepts we see popping up on every corner, brides are beginning to reach out to local farmers and florists to redesign their ideas straight from magazine clippings and blogs. Not only does this yield unique and one of a kind pieces, but it also helps the local economy. Talk about a win/win! This season, brides are really upping the ante on matchless floral concepts. We’re seeing a lot of funky and boho-styled hanging flowers, as well as cacti. The Texas heat is often rough on some wedding flowers, but this concern is completely eliminated when dealing with succulents. Another great pro about cacti is that they last far beyond your wedding day, and you don’t need to have a green thumb to keep them alive! And while some are going above and beyond with artsy floral arrangements, we can’t forget the simplicity and elegance found in your traditional flowers. Not sure what we mean by “traditional”?
Think: Chrysanthemums, Dahlias and Zinnias, oh my!
To add a little twist on your traditional theme without going too far out, consider incorporating colorful wildflowers and whimsical ferns. We can’t wait to see how florists and farmers in the Hill Country bring our Pinterest dreams to life with locally grown plants and eclectic arrangements!

Champagne
ON WEDDING DAY! “WAIT A PROSECCO” MARGARITA
H
Historically used for special occasions, champagne naturally goes hand in hand with weddings. Whether you’re serving champagne for toasts, having it served with your escort cards, or even including a sparkling signature cocktail, there’s no shortage of creative ways to include champagne at your reception. Here are a couple ways to include your favorite bubbly at a wedding or event: Serve mini bottles of champagne with cute tags featuring your wedding hashtag. These are favors that won’t be left behind! Use the champagne bottles as the seating chart by setting up a champagne table outside the reception and have guests grab a glass that will guide them to their table. Get guests instantly in a party mood by filling their welcome baskets with snacks and mini bottles of bubbly. Have the bartender craft a signature champagne drink to serve during cocktail hour and add playful stirrers for that special touch. Create custom champagne bottles featuring your names and wedding date to serve as part of your wedding decor or centerpieces. Calm your nerves and have a final toast with your girls before you walk down the aisle. If you want to use this as a moment for the champagne toast, have a sign letting guests know to hold on to their drink.
1oz Blanco Tequila .25oz Triple Sec .25oz Lime Juice .25oz Lemon Juice Drop of Grenadine
Shake with ice, strain into a sugar and pink rock salt rimmed Flute and fill with chilled Prosecco. Garnish with a rock candy stir stick. “Who says you can’t have your champagne and drink it too? These pink margarita champagnes are sure to impress, plus they’re beautiful! Perfect for bachelorettes, weddings or any party!! Pro Tip - want champagne as part of your cocktail? Plan on extra coolers to keep these beauties cold. Champagne takes up more space than beer, therefore needs more coolers. There’s also about 7-10 glasses in a bottle when mixed with other alcohols and juices. And 6 when poured alone.” -SassTass & The Pour Horse, Mobile Bar Co LLC

Choosing
the Right Caterer The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. The same goes for your wedding guests. The menu is one of the most important aspects of your wedding. Here are some questions to help you choose the right caterer. What is included in your plate price?
Many caterers do not include travel, service and plates in the price you see advertised. These extra fees add up very quickly. Another fee that may be added on to the total bill is gratuity. This is normally a percentage of the total bill. If you are not prepared for these extras it can be quite a shock.
When will you set up?
The amount needed for a deposit varies widely from one caterer to another. Knowing what you are required to pay to save your date will help with budgeting. Cancellation policies also vary from different companies. There will be a set date you can cancel by without losing your deposit.
When do you need final plate count and final payment?
Having these questions answered in advance allows you to plan the date you will need to receive all of your RSVPs from guests. It will also help when budgeting for your big day.
My husband and I started our catering company in 2011 out of our food truck. We both love to cook and being a part of a bride and groom’s special day is a blessing. Our entire family works for the business. My husband, oldest son or I oversee every event, ensuring you get the best service. Customer service is THE most important part of our business. We want everyone that chooses us to know that his or her day is important to us.
How long will you serve?
Most caterers have a set amount of time that they will be serving your guests. This may be determined by the number of guests you have at your event. There may be an extra fee for all-night service.
Do you clean up or bus tables?
Depending on your venue, this can be very important. You want to know how much of the clean up the caterer has included in their price.
What happens to the leftover food?
If you have fewer guests than you planned, you may have food leftover. Some caterers take the food with them and others package it for you.

ROOM BLOCKS
If you have out-of-town guests, you may want to provide them some options for lodging or staying while in town for your special day. Check the area and find a hotel that is near the venue and talk to them about reserving a room block. A hotel room block allows you to reserve a block of rooms (usually 10 or more) and that will allow your guest to get a better rate than if they were made their reservations individually. It will save your guest money and time as well as ensuring that all or most guests are in the same location and near the venue where the event is taking place. Most of the time it is difficult to know exactly how many guests will need a room and that is the good news about doing room blocks. You can book a block of rooms for the rough amount that you think is needed and let the guests make their own reservations. If there are rooms left over, the hotel will give you a date that those rooms are no longer reserved, and they will be open to someone else. If you have more guests booking than what’s in the block that your reserved, the hotel will certainly add on more rooms if they are available. We think a little overestimating is the best way. We suggest you start booking or reserving rooms 6 to 8 months in advance of your event which gives your guests plenty of time to plan and make reservations. (Not to mention giving them time to get excited about your big day and the time they get to share with you.) We do also suggest that you give your guest two options, a lower-end priced hotel and a higher-end resort style lodging, so that the room blocks work well for all budgets. For most cases, we also suggest that you limit the number of room blocks that you book for your guest to no more than 3 hotels. More than that becomes cumbersome and one of the great benefits of room blocks it that your guest can visit and explore together when they are not at the wedding or event.

If you have children attending your wedding, I highly suggest creating some type of entertainment for them to have some fun. While parents are busy catching up with friends and sipping cocktails, they will appreciate activities that keep the kids occupied. Some of our favorite ideas include: • Totes/bags filled with games • Scavenger hunts • Bring out the old board games and put them to use • Make some kid-friendly centerpieces with crayons and coloring books • Cover the table with paper and let the kids create their own placemat or art piece • Personalize a coloring book or cup just for them Pro tip: Hire a sitter service to make sure the kids are well supervised!

Kendall Elizabeth Taylor was born to Chris and Holly Taylor in September of 1990. We had an entire other name picked out for a girl. We decided to wait until the baby’s arrival to find out the sex. The anticipation for everyone made it exciting and fun. Chris came from a family of all boys. His brother had already had a son and was expecting another one two months later. Baby Taylor (now known as Kendall) made a quick entry into this world as she was hard headed and decided to turn breech. She made it in record time of 2 hours from start to finish. When we found out she was a girl, we were ecstatic! There were not girls on Chris’ side of the family yet and this was the first grandbaby on Holly’s side. However, the name we picked out just did not seem to fit this girl. Not sure what it was, it just did not work.
names of people that would grow up to succeed in life in all things they tried. I cannot directly quote this, as I no longer even have the book. Fast-forward 27 years, Kendall who grew up in Kendall County marries her best friend and high school sweetheart at Kendall Plantation. Coincidence? I do not think so. Kendall is a special name for many reasons in our family. Not only did we love growing up in Kendall County, begin dating at Kendall County Fair in 1987, we named our oldest child Kendall. In addition, Kendall Taylor married at Kendall Plantation. How appropriate is that you might ask? Very, I would say!
Chris and I met in the 4th grade when he moved to Boerne and we were in the same homeroom class. We grew up through our school years together. We graduated in May of 1987 from Boerne High School and were not dating at the time. In September of 1987, we started dating at the Kendall County Fair. We lived in Kendall County. Therefore, Kendall just seemed like the perfect name for this feisty baby girl. We looked in our baby name book and Kendall was a gender-neutral name that was on the list of SPRING 2018

A Professional Wedding Vendor A Preventative Tale
W
What is a professional wedding vendor? Most professionals are insured, have been in the business for 5+ years and have done numerous weddings each year. The have contracts to sign and know their job and what needs to be done to make sure your event goes smoothly. So, what does this mean? Do your homework on your vendors to make certain you are indeed working with a professional on your wedding or event. Chances are, your planner suggested the professional vendors with you or maybe your venue sent you home with a list of “preferred” vendors. Your planner and the venue already did their homework so you don’t have to do it! Let me just give you an example of what has happened and could happen on your wedding day if you decide not to use a professional. I recently had a wedding
and suggested several professional and established photographers to my bride to choose from. Of course everyone has recommendations on who to use (family, friends and other vendors as well). Well, my bride decided to go with someone she found online who was way cheaper than what the other professionals were charging. (There is your first sign, as you get what you pay for – YIKES!) Everything was going great until wedding day and there was no photographer to be found. As wedding planners, we were on it calling the office line, cell phone (we had gathered before the event to make sure we had contact numbers)… and no answer. We then get a text from the photographer saying her daughter had an accident and she wouldn’t’ be there. Horrible situation, yes absolutely, but why didn’t someone call and tell the bride or the planner? Does she have a backup person?
Was there a second shooter who could take over? Nothing. No response. Still to this day, the photographer has never called to apologize or explained what happened. So the ball was in our court. We had only hours left to find a photographer last minute before the ceremony. Thankfully, being the professionals that we are, we had offers from over 5 photographers within 30 minutes and we had a photographer on her way to make sure the bride didn’t go without photos on her special day. Not only did we get a photographer there for wedding day, we also got an amazing photographer at half the cost of what she normally charges. Had this bride not had us in her corner, could she have pulled it off and gotten someone else there on time? Possibly yes, but highly doubtful.
We were blessed with a professional photographer who was able to help out a bride on her big day. We would also like to give a huge thanks to Rebecca McCoy Photography for saying yes at half the cost. She was in the car, heading to the venue in less than an hour of us reaching out to her. No doubt you will have friends and family come out of the woodworks the moment you announce your engagement. All the sudden, everyone is a wedding planner, DJ, and a florist. We get it, you don’t want so to spend your lifetime savings on a wedding and spending tons of money. However, a wedding is a celebration, it shouldn’t be a headache, and you shouldn’t have to worry about anything on your one and only wedding day! Hiring professional vendors is the key to a successful event and avoiding the stress.

Say Yes to the Tress: Choosing your bridal hairstyle.
D
Deciding how you’d like to wear your hair on your wedding day is right up there with selecting the perfect wedding dress and should be just as exhilarating! Whether simple or extravagant, bohemian or polished, your personal style should be a strong influence in this decision. Here are a few tips to ensure smooth sailing through the hair department. 1) Get inspired! Pinterest, Instagram and wedding magazines are amazing places to search for bridal hair inspiration. Most of you reading this probably already have a Pinterest “board” or two filled with picturesque wedding venues, dresses and color schemes. A “wedding hair” board is a great way to organize your ideas and have something to present to your stylist. 2) Know what you’re working with. When searching for ideas be sure you have a good idea of what’s already going on on-top of that beautiful and unique head of yours. Things like hair color, length, and texture make a huge difference in what a style will ultimately look like so be sure your inspiration is similar to your current hair situation. 3) Find a trusted stylist. Finding a stylist and securing their availability on your special day should be one of the very first things on your list of to-do’s. Be sure to communicate what you will need on that day. Will you need a person on-site or will you be going into the salon? Will it just be you or your full bridal party? Will you be needing multiple services—nails, makeup, etc? 4) Schedule your run-through(s). Sometimes a run-through is required much in advance if you are needing to search for a stylist with whom you are unfamiliar. However, once you have found your trusted stylist, I advise my brides do to a final run-through no more than four weeks out from the big day. This way things like length and hair color will not have changed enough to affect your overall style. Most importantly I hope you thoroughly enjoy discovering your bridal hairstyle and that these tips help you accomplish just that. Here’s to looking your bridal best on your special day. SPRING 2018

Lighting Up Your Wedding By: Ryan Schroeder {Four Star Entertainment LLC.}
I
In today’s world of ever-changing and enhanced lighting effects, such as up lights and spotlights, many are being used to change the face of the venue and shine light on certain aspects of the reception room.
Up lights are powerful lights that sit around the room in corners and along, long bare walls, and are pointed up from the floor to help wash the bare white or off-white walls in just about any color you ask for. The up lights truly bring out the style and colors of your wedding and most of all help to enhance boring, bare walls. Though costs vary, uplights are affordable. Many DJ’s usually have some they can rent you for your event.

There are also Monogram or Gobo lights. These are very powerful projector lights that have a small laser cut metal or glass disk in them. They shine names or initials along with a small design on any large, open wall or dance floor. Gobo lights look great and add a wow factor to your venue. The cost of the Gobo lights runs about the same as up lighting, but prices do vary. You can even have pin spots. Pin spots are lights that hang from the ceiling and shine a small circle of light onto the cake topper or entry table photos to enhance and brighten them up. These lights are becoming more and more popular but involve a lot of set up. Keep in mind, some venues do not allow you to hang lights from their ceiling. The cost varies on pin spots as well and depends on the installation of the lights. If you have any questions at all or would like to see more great lighting ideas, please contact Ryan Schroeder at Four Star Entertainment, LLC.
Why Hire a Wedding Planner?
H
Hiring a wedding planner can be the biggest gift to yourself and your finance because rather than bothering or stressing over the details with your soon to spouse you get to call your planner and have someone on your side to help you through the process. Did you know that hiring a planner can save you money in the long run? They know how to keep you within your budget with trusted and professional vendors as well as how to keep your vision and dream come true. They know creative ways to make your hard-earned money go far in the wedding budget for example we love seeing the ceremony flowers brought into the reception hall to be
P
reused or those big alter pieces at ceremony are now the head table décor. There are lots of tips and tricks that they know as the professionals that can help you. Sure you always have that friend that had a wedding and now thinks she is a planner maybe she even made you a cute little folder with tabs for catering, flowers and included pictures and ideas. You should ove that you have a friend on your side to help you through the process however are they a professional? Absolutely NOT! What if something goes bad wedding day do they have a kit to fix the broke shoes, sew on a button or give the best man an advil?
If you run late doing pictures after the ceremony can they get you caught up on the timeline without anyone noticing or thinking you were off schedule NO! There is so much that goes into a wedding and just a friend who has planned her own wedding or helped other friends at theirs is not a risk I am willing to take on my special day. Leave this event to the professionals only and do yourself and family a favor by getting a planner who has been in the business for years and know what has gone wrong and how to fix it if it does without anyone knowing. I can’t tell you the number of times we changed things to
make it work and no one knew why or what was going on. One time we moved the cake cutting to right after dinner rather than later in the night because the cake was melting (made by a friend of course and not a professional) Did I mention that we stay calm and collected and make the corrections as needed rather than freaking out and stressing everyone out for no reason – I have seen this happen too many times on wedding day. A simple fix for a professional and a MOH or friend getting everyone upset for no reason at all. You get what you pay for and this is not a area I would skimp on wedding day.
Personalize through Linens
Planning event decoration and choosing linens can be a lot of fun, especially if you have an eye for color and texture. The linens that you choose for your wedding or event is the easiest way to personalize your look at a venue. There are a wide variety of colors, textures, and styles to choose from that can help make the venue reflect your personality. Linens can be basic poly, satin, pin tuck, crushed, taffeta, embroidered and more. Just a quick note on napkins - Satin napkins are especially elegant for a wedding and the beautiful sheen creates the fairytale look. Crinkle wedding napkins add a touch of fashion while, taffeta can add a unique texture to your color scheme and is excellent for creating a sense of sophistication. Polyester napkins are particularly durable and can go with any event or table setting. Be careful not to choose a rosette linen because although they are gorgeous and look amazing they may not work to keep wedding guests’ glasses or your centerpiece stable – However they work perfect for a cake, gift or sign-in table.
In order for the linens to go to the floor, we have provided the following information to show the necessary lengths: 72” Table requires 132” linen and can seat 10 to 12 guests 60” Table requires 120” linen and can seat 8 to 10 guests 48” table requires 108” linen and can seat 6 to 8 guests Rectangle tables require a 6 or 8 ft drop depending on the height of the table Many venues can help you to coordinate your linens and show you pictures of what has been done before that may match or look good in that venue. Meet with your wedding planner, event venue or rental company to pick the perfect linens for your next event. Hill Country Weddings and Events now offers linen rentals.

PURCHASE TIPS
A
After marriage comes the joy of buying a first time home or selling two homes and picking one for your new family to set up house in. It can be nerve-wracking and thrilling all at the same time. These three tips may help to make that process a little easier. #1 Check your credit You need to know if there are any accounts that may not belong to you and look for any mistakes, unpaid accounts or collection accounts. Just because you pay everything on time each month doesn’t mean your credit score is high. Make sure you pay down those credit cards and all medical bills and that any collections are paid in full. #2 See for what you qualify You need to find out what you can afford and what size mort-

Whether your friends and relatives were generous with their cash money or you intentionally set up a cash registry, there’s no right or wrong way to spend your wedding gift money. All that matters is the two of you are in agreement and what you want to do with it. So sit down
gage you can obtain. You can calculate your debt-to-income ratio and do a preapproval with a bank so you know what might fit in your budget, so you are shopping for the right size house or mortgage. Don’t forget to factor in property taxes and homeowner’s insurance into your budget. #3 How much can you put down? You need money in savings not only for your down payment but for your connection fees for
water, electric, phone and more. Don’t forget to budget for moving expenses or new furniture or small items to help make your new house a home. This is a brief overview that can help put you on the path to finding your new home but always remember to educate yourself beforehand so that it’s less stressful and pick a good realtor to make the process easier for you. Also try to avoid trying to go through this process while still planning the wedding.
Weddings are stressful enough you don’t need to be worrying about buying a house, fixing credit errors and moving on top of it all. Give yourself and your partner time to enjoy the wedding and honeymoon before taking on your next adventure and challenge together.

Talk about a destination. This spring I am so excited about our honeymoon pick. I am also beyond envious of anyone who could ever have the chance to go to.... wait for it.... Zambia! What better way to kick off married bliss than with a honeymoon to the great continent of Africa. It may be a little farther than some might like to travel, however if you’re going to do it, this is the place for the most extraordinary adventure. Zambia is often referred to as the ‘real’ Africa and offers an authentic wilderness experience away from the crowds - making it a totally perfect location for our honeymooners. Can you imagine sitting on the deck of an elevated cabin or around your tent at a campsite in the evening and listening to the growls, howls, snorts and roars of the wild animals? Zambia is a landlocked country of rugged terrain and diverse wildlife with many parks and safari areas. It is also considered to be one of the safer countries in the world, being eaten by a wild animal, aside. Zambia has a large and well-established tourism industry that can help shape and create the honeymoon of your dreams. Zambia is a wonderful honeymoon destination particularly for a couple with a sense of adventure and a love of nature. A few of the many different options that you can consider are: • Experiencing a truly authentic and remote safari • Walking safaris in the South Luangwa National Park • Seeing the South Luangwa’s huge concentration of hippos - the largest in Africa • A wide diversity of activities from canoeing to fishing, boating, walking and game drives • Romantic vistas and spectacular sunsets • Camps and lodges perfect for honeymooners • Tree climbing lions at Kafue National Park • Expeditions or canoe trips • Seeing the many waterfalls, especially the Victoria Falls Pack your bags and don’t forget your camera. Go enjoy a truly adventuresome honeymoon this spring. Best Wishes, Hill Country Weddings Magazine

How the Burghardt’s met and fell in love. Stanley Karl Burghardt grew up in Stanford, Connecticut. Mary was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and worked for a doctor. She had planned to become a nurse until she met Stanley. In 1957, Mary was introduced to Stanley by a cousin of hers that was dating a friend of Stanley’s. They hit it off instantly. Stanley said he fell in love with Mary’s kind heart and consideration for others. He thought she was the sweetest person he had ever met. Stanley jokes that Mary’s father fed him well and he appreciated that since he enjoyed all the good food. Mary said she fell in love with Stan right away, he was everything she ever imagined for a partner. Stanley graduated from The Air Force Academy on the 3rd of June 1959 and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the Air Force. Three days later, on the 6th of June, the two were married. Mary traveled all over with him during his many postings when she could. Throughout their marriage they had 7 children who blessed them with 14 grandchildren and one great grandson. You can tell they could not be more proud of their

family. It is obvious they have done well as parents for sure. Mary supported her husband throughout his military career - even through his tours in Vietnam and Korea. Mary stayed home with the children, all the while hoping Stan would come home safely from every deployment. Stan retired from the United States Air Force in 1983 after 24 years. He went on to work for Boeing after that and retired again. They both enjoy traveling and cruising together squeezing in a round of golf when they can find time.

love story with us and our readers. What an inspiration you both are. Here’s to many more anniversaries together and may God continue to Bless your family.
When we asked for their advice on a long-lasting marriage, they both agreed that compromise, give and take, and never staying mad too long were good dogmas to keep a good marriage healthy. Communication is a vital key and trying not to be selfish. They both came from loving families where people stayed together through the good times and the rough times. They still care for Stan’s mother who will be celebrating her 101st birthday this April. They want to eventually move to Air Force Village, where they can enjoy their full retirement doing the
