What will May bring for our Southeast Texas Families? Will we see a continuation of this cool spring weather? Will the flooding return? Will summer descend upon us with brutal heat and humidity? For many families, May is when we start making regular trips to the lake and to the beach. Many of our moms try to enjoy the last few weeks of relative peace before the kids are out of school. May is also a great time to start looking at summer camps and schools for next year. Visit our calendar to find activities you can enjoy in any weather! We hope this issue will help you find great activities and resources for your SETX Family.

Simple as Dirt relief at the freshness of the arrival of the season. I keep losing my kids throughout the day, only to find them reveling in the outdoors in our backyard. To them, there is nothing better than playing in the dirt. Their imaginations run wild as they dig childIn an age bombarding us with sized holes under the cypress tree, promises of entertainment, we often bury each other’s legs, make and feel that bigger, more complex, and Dirt continued on page 10 more expensive ways to make our kids happy are best. However, I have realized this is exhausting, and there comes a time when slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures in life is much more appealing. Spring has definitely sprung in Southeast Texas, and we have begun to venture out, looking for fun after the long, cold winter. Creation is all around us and it is teeming with new life. They’ve unearthed beetles, millipedes, earthworms, and massive grub worms. To my delight as their mom and teacher, these findings have resulted in impromptu science lessons and more exploration. My husband, too, couldn’t wait to get his hands in the soil this spring. He has tilled and composted to his heart’s content, and planted fruits and vegetables with the kids, that we are anticipating harvesting later this summer. Most of all, the backyard activities have been a great way for us to connect and interact with each other. We don’t have to get dressed up, loaded up, and headed off to Somewhere Else. We don’t have to fret about how much money the day will cost. We 10
can just be laid back, enjoying each other in the midst of the chaos surrounding us. It has been restorative to be still and contentedly soak in the happiness of these moments with the sun on our faces. Years down the road, we may not remember the bowling score, the video game, or what movies we saw, but we will always have the memory of living in the little moments as we played in the earth together. Happiness can be dependent on many complex things, but sometimes it is as simple as dirt.

St. Andrew’s Day School Are you interested in placing your child into a nurturing, loving Christian environment? St. Andrews is a wonderful school for children13 months – Pre-K 4. Independence and the ability to learning through discovery are both major goals for each child. Play, songs, and activities are primary vehicles for learning. Children learn by doing, therefore, many active learning opportunities are provided via thematic units. Classes focus on science, cooking, motor skills, math, art, reading readiness, and writing skills. Computer classes are introduced in Pre-K 3 and 4. Children also receive assistance with motor skills.
18
In addition to regular classroom activities, St. Andrews students receive music, computer, introduction to fine art, Spanish, and chapel. St. Andrew’s Day School is excited to announce we will be using Frog Street Curriculum in all classrooms. This state recognized curriculum believes that children learn best through actively engaging with people and their environment. Children are involved in hands on experiences, real life adventures, and assisted discovery as they explore concepts through play. St. Andrew’s is a place where essential readiness skills are

• Tuesday – Wednesday – Thursday • 9am – 1pm The purpose of St. Andrew’s Day School is to help your child learn in a happy, Christian atmosphere, and to grow in these ways: • Emotionally - to learn to manage tension and hostility in an acceptable manner and feel accepted by his teachers and peers. • Socially - to learn to be thoughtful and to adjust to the group. • Cognitively - by stimulating curiosity and imagination, encouraging thinking and problem solving, and developing language skills at the child’s own rate of speed. • Physically - acquiring gross motor coordination through the use of proper play equipment, honing fine motor skills through developmentally appropriate activities. 20
• Spiritually- the religious training provided is informal and non-sectarian. Through the teacher’s example and the atmosphere established in the classroom, the child appreciates God’s world and learns to identify himself as part of God’s people.

Detoxifying Your Daily Routine We blow through our days with lighting speed, more often than not focusing on checking off everything on the list rather than evaluating how each scent, liquid, solid product will affect us and our families. Visualize your daily routine and think about how many chemicals you expose yourself and your family to without thinking. Shampoo, conditioner, soap, body wash, toothpaste,
mouthwash, makeup, hair products, lotions, creams, powders, perfume, body spray, deodorant, not to mention everyone else’s chemicals in your school or office… many of our daily products contain chemicals that can build up over time and give rise to health concerns. Consider which of your products you can live without or reduce frequency of use. Personally, I wash my hair every other day, I skip deodorant, perfume, and

NOT give up deodorant and conditioner; so find the products that you find aren’t absolutely necessary for you and begin culling them from your daily routine. Think about each time you use a product, each time you apply a product, breathe a prodmouthwash, I use minimal makeup and hair product, and I subbed out my lotions and creams for coconut oil. The items I absolutely need I try to find in an affordable chemicalfree substitute like handmade soaps, essential oils, and organic beauty products. uct, and absorb a product. Consider the repetitious exposure of chemicals to your body. If you wouldn’t put in on your liver or lungs, why would you use it on your skin? It is, after all, the body’s largest organ and chemicals have direct access to the bloodstream. It’s hard to break a routine, but when you know better you do better. The same goes for your children. How many chemicals do you expose them to daily? I admit, it’s a bit of a shock to think that we are inundating our little ones with toxins that we have bought because it smells so good, feels so soft, or looks so cute. Let’s ask ourselves that if we are concerned about our babies having balanced nutrition and not eating gluten, sugar, red dye, etc. are we as concerned with what we put on their skin, in their hair, and in the air they breathe? We will never be able to provide a 100% toxic free environment due to other choices of doctor’s offices, janitorial services of office building,

Aunt Betty’s signature perfume, pollution, and factors beyond our control, but the choices we make for our family can reduce overall effects of chemicals in our health and the health of our children. Price point is a very valid factor in families being able to live as clean or organic as they would like. I found that by NOT spending money on fancy perfumes and body sprays, I could afford essential oils. If I substituted the budgeted lotions, creams, and deodorant for handmade soaps and coconut oil, I didn’t spend anything

more than I already was. The items I still needed I just bought organic if I could, but didn’t beat myself up if I couldn’t. I make the best choices I can with my budget, time, brain space, and preferences. You can do the same, funnel your resources toward your priorities and slowly fold in one new practice at a time.
