This issue features our annual ICF Directory. This is an issue that you’ll want to keep handy near your desk, or bookmark it on our website, so you can refer to it throughout the year. Being a magazine that covers the ICF industry, people searching online for ICF construction frequently find the website of Concrete Homes magazine. Most of these people have never heard of our magazine before, but they can tell that we are knowledgeable about ICFs. Several times a year I get email inquiries from people looking to build ICF homes in various regions around the state, and they’re getting in touch with me because they can’t find anyone in their hometown that knows ICF. The ICF Directory is the first place I refer these people to. That tells me a few things. It tells me that more and more people are interested in building with ICFs, but don’t know where to turn. It tells me that the average homebuilder is missing a great marketplace by not learning how to build with ICFs and not advertising that fact. It also tells me that listings of industry experts around the entire ICF Directory is a valuable place to have your name listed, because it gives people access to ICF manufacturers, installers, architects who are skilled in working with ICFs and all of the product accessories that go along with ICF construction all in one place. If your company’s name isn’t in this year’s ICF Directory, plan on being in next year’s. After all, those homeowners who need ICF homes have got to start somewhere, and good builders who know ICFS need to be found.

REPORT FROM THE INSULATING CONCRETE FORMS MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION The ICFMA continues to work very hard to fulfill its mission to enhance the position of ICFs in the North American marketplace. The ICFMA continues to work and coordinate with the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, Portland Cement Association, Concrete Canada, EPS Industry Alliance, National Association of Home Builders and the Canadian Home Builders Association. MARKETING INITIATIVES The ICFMA worked with the ICF Builder Group to present a very successful three-installment 2018 ICF Summit at World of Concrete in January 2018. We also joined forces with the PCA, FLASH (the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes) and other organizations to stage the Breezy Point Demonstration re-build to showcase disaster resilient construction in the Rockaway Beach community which was hit by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. The ICFMA works closely with the NRMCA to support their 5-year, $20 million Build With Strength initiative to promote concrete constructed low- and mid-rise buildings. To support these efforts the ICFMA published an ICF industry-approved Design Manual for Multi-Story Buildings and has also created an industry-approved generic ICF Installer training program.

In 2017 the ICFMA published a groundbreaking independent study comparing the thermal performance of ICF construction to wood-frame construction. The results of this study confirmed dramatically superior energy-efficiency performance and far greater effective R-value demonstrated by the ICF wall assembly. In 2018 the ICFMA will be conducting a series of additional thermal testing to further document the superior thermal performance and energy-efficiency of ICFs. And finally, the ICFMA has worked with RS Means to ensure that updated and accurate ICF costing data will be included in the upcoming editions of RS Means online and hardcopy resources which are commonly referenced by designers and builders during a project’s design, bid and construction phases. TECHNICAL INITIATIVES The ICFMA participated in the industry-wide water intrusion testing program to determine the best practices for window installation and detailing in ICF walls. We also are working toward re-affirming the Canadian ICF standard and getting incorporated into the Canadian building code. —Andy Lennox, Chair of the ICFMA

he says. “I also have a couple of friends who are not general contractors but did their own houses so I had their help. The fact is whether it’s a big house or a small house there’s a certain amount of things that need to be done. You’ve got electrical, framing, roofing, plumbing, HVAC, finish carpentry. It’s about finding the right people and trusting them.” Armed with a list of needs, Drew embarked on managing the work and trying to educate people about ICFs where necessary. For instance, the electricians had not worked with ICFs before and were unsure about proceeding. Drew ended up cutting out all of the channels and holes for the electrical boxes and cables himself because they’d never done it. “It took a little longer but I got it done,” he says. In 2011, the Drews were ready to build on their 46-acre property that was formerly a Christmas tree farm with several low-lying wet spots. Their original plan was for a small, cottagesized Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired design. Drew first began digging ponds for dirt to build up a berm at the road in front of the property and for fill around the house to create a basement. In the middle of this process, the township passed an ordinance stating that in order to have a pond the house had to be a minimum of 1,000 square feet. The Drews had paid an architect to design a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired house, but they just didn’t feel that it fit on the property. 12

“I was in a panic. I started looking for the cheapest 1,000-square-foot house I could find, and that’s when I found Dan Tyree’s website,” says Drew. “He has small house plans but also had these castle plans.” Those plans were designed with ICF in mind. After seeing the Tyree designs, the Drews decided that their new home would be a castle. The traditional features of a castle, the courtyard in particular, were one of the things they both loved. The Drews also worked with Scott McElrath, president at Dangerous Architects, a local Michigan-based firm that helped them add some lower-floor windows and meet some Michigan building standards. McElrath also drew up plans for the granite that the Drews wanted, including an 80,000-pound main arch. All totaled, the Drews brought in some 572,000 pounds of granite in 13, 20-foot long containers. Other than a friend of Michael’s who had used ICFs on a house he built, Michael had no previous experience with ICFs. “I was very impressed with the idea,” he says. “I did a bit of research and found BuildBlock. I liked the fact that they had plastic supports every 6 inches.” Drew had considered using structural masonry (three bricks thick) to build the home, but energy efficiency was a big consideration. “Using ICFs came down to the fact that it was very sturdy and energy efficient,” he says. “Since I live in Michigan I couldn’t get past the idea of minus 10-degree days and the possibility of waking up to frost on the interior walls.” With that decision made, the Drews had to turn their attention to the site. The water table is only 16 inches below the surface and they knew they wanted a full basement, because Michael grew up in Illinois with a house that has a basement tornado shelter. Tornadoes are sometimes a concern in this area of Michigan too, so they wanted that extra security. They built a berm with 45,000 cubic yards of dirt dug up from the four ponds they created. The 9,000-square-foot castle has a total of four bedrooms, five full baths, two powder rooms and one 3/4 bath. The first floor holds the heated three-car garage, mud room, first floor laundry, 3/4 bath, landing, kitchen, butlers pantry, one powder room, entry hall, dining room, great room, library, garden room, passage and a second powder room. The first floor of the tower is a billiards room. Over the garage is a blue-themed guest bedroom, a second laundry and a green guest bedroom. The second floor of the main house has a craft room/third

guest bedroom and the master suite which includes his-and-hers walk-in closets and separate baths, the master bedroom, master bedroom sitting room and a bar on the second floor of the tower. The third floor of the tower is an office. Quarter sawn white oak is a predominant theme in the interior, with most rooms featuring abundant wood trim. With so much space to work with, each of the three guest bedrooms includes a small kitchenette, similar to a small kitchen area you would find in a hotel. The rooms were so large, that including some extra luxuries just made sense. And when the in-laws visit, everyone has their own private space and the whole family isn’t all reaching for the coffee pot at the same time. One of the guest bedrooms also has its own custom granite fireplace and a huge walk-in linen closet. When there are no guests, the guest wing can be closed off, so the family can save on energy costs. The second-floor master bedroom suite can only be found if you know where to look for the entrance, which is hidden by a bookshelf door that blends into the rest of the bookshelves that line the hallway. A Jack and Jill bathroom there is matched by walk-in closets. Naturally, the bathroom features every luxury, including custom granite shower bases, sinks and matching bathtub designs. The sitting room features a beautiful fireplace with large windows and another small kitchenette. A considerable use of granite is one of the signature features of the home. “I have 179 pages of granite fabrication drawings

for stones that go around doors, windows, steps, chimney caps, fireplaces, hearths, and an 80,000-pound granite arch!” enthuses Drew. “I also used pre-fabricated bucks for all the doors and windows from PreBuck in Wyoming, Michigan. Brett Schlosser, the owner worked with me to design and build custom bucks. I wanted them built especially for this project so that I could do angled jambs that look like pocket shutters.” Pre-fabricated bucks are designed for direct contact with concrete and are non-corrosive to metals. Pocket shutters, clever carpentry that allows for the shutters to fold into a pocket built into the window casing, are something you see on old English buildings. The home’s basement utilized 8-inch ICF block, which changes to 6-inch block for the first and second floor. If he had used 8-inch block all the way, he could have had the real pocket shutters, but it would have been more expensive. That turned out to be one of the few things that Michael Drew regrets about the design of the home. The build also included other interesting things, like the use of top chord bearing floor trusses that sit on angle iron that is held to the ICF by J-bolts. Top chord bearing open web trusses are used to support the first and second story floors. The openweb trusses allow pipes, wires and HVAC ducts to pass through without having to cut out channels. The exterior was finished with brick and granite. In true castle fashion, 140,000 pounds of 1/2-inch slate covers the roof. one-inch thick. Treated lumber was chosen for the roof deck. Michael waited for it to go on sale at Menards then ordered 16,363 linear feet, over three miles, of 5/4 treated decking. “The salesman was very amused when I walked up and ordered three miles of their decking!” Drew says. Copper nails are compatible with treated lumber as treated lumber nowadays mostly contains copper. He has an insulation value of R98 in the roof under the slate.   Since energy efficiency was important, they used HRCS for ventilation and geothermal heating and cooling. For the geothermal, Drew pumps out well water at about 50 degrees, takes the heat out of it and dumps that water back into one of the ponds. “They are awesome air conditioners and you don’t have an ugly, noisy thing sitting outside your house,” he says. “In the wintertime it’s ok but not super energy efficient because it’s such a big house. If I had it to do over again I would do geothermal for air conditioning but forced air with gas for the heat because geothermal are not as efficient as heaters.” The initial house plans didn’t call for any solar, but Drew considered it and may include some solar features in the future. While there’s a lot to love about the home, Drew says everyone loves the wall walk that goes over the courtyard arch. “It takes you from the guest wing to the bar,” he says. “I especially love the garden room. It has big windows facing south and in the winter here the sun is low and in the south and it gets up to 80 degrees in there. It’s really nice to sit in there with the plants.” 14

Last year the SCA reported that 2016 shipments grew 12 percent over 2015 totals as well, showcasing an increasing demand for slag cement within the U.S. market. “As consumers are becoming more aware of the variety of benefits and applications associated with slag cement use in construction, they also start to rely on its consistency,” said Ed Griffith, President, Slag Cement Association. “The reliability of the product seems to go over well with the industry, it’s nice to see the shipping trends reflect this industry awareness.” In the last year, the SCA has placed an increased focus on providing the concrete industry tools to showcase the availability of slag cement in the United States. Caterpillar to Enter Utility Vehicle Market Caterpillar announced plans to enter the utility vehicle market. The company has entered into a manufacturing and supply agreement with Textron Specialized Vehicles Inc., and will offer UTV models sold through participating Cat dealerships starting in 2018. “We are excited about our introduction of the first-ever Cat UTV models. Post tension corrosion due to water intrusion has become an increasingly widespread problem among parking structures, highrise buildings and slab on grade applications. New BIBKO Residual Concrete Recycling System for the Amos Company The Amos Company, headquartered in Heilbronn, Germany, can look back on 80 years of tradition. With a workforce of 160 employees, Amos’s fields of activity include building construction, underground and road construction, project development and turnkey construction. Furthermore, the company has its own ready-mix concrete plant and supplies concrete in all grades. The vehicle fleet consists of three truck mixers and two concrete pumps. In order to solve the problem of disposal of the residual concrete and the accumulating washing water, the decision was taken with the ecological conviction of a modern company to invest in a residual concrete recycling plant. The delivery was preceded by a corresponding project planning phase in which the local conditions were considered. The ComTec trough system was chosen in order to be able to process the accumulating residues quickly. The machine was placed underground on account of an existing height offset. The advantage of this is that the charging hopper is at floor level. This allows concrete pumps to be washed out in addition to the truck mixers on the same hopper without an additional system being required for washing out the concrete pumps. A 6 1/2-foot-long screw conveyor discharges the washed-out material. The Bibko ComTec system features a hot-dip galvanized machine which is winterproof and fitted with a hinged aluminium cover. The system is fitted with a complete recycling water treatment plant.

LO-RISE HOSPITAL IN PALO ALTO ALSO RAISES BREAST CANCER AWARENESS The pump’s Z-Boom design allowed the operator to unfold the boom inside the building and get closer to the pour.

HE $1 BILLION EXPANSION OF LUCILE PACKARD CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL STANFORD IN PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA, ADDED MORE THAN 500,000 SQUARE FEET TO THE EXISTING HOSPITAL FACILITY AND INCLUDES ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, MORE PRIVATE PATIENT HOSPITAL ROOMS, AN ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE DESIGN AND EXPANDED CLINICS. Jos. J. Albanese Inc. was chosen to complete the structural concrete for the new facility. The company is using two Putzmeister America Inc. pumps for the project, including its new 56Z-Meter Truck Mounted Concrete Boom Pump, which features a boom that was painted pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. The project’s general contractor, DPR Construction, selected Albanese for the concrete work, which includes footings, slabs, walls and decks for two levels below ground and six levels above ground. Albanese has been using two of its pumps for the project, a new 38Z-5-meter truck-mounted boom pump and its 56Z-Meter with pink boom, which was painted by Putzmeister to help the company raise awareness for breast cancer. Together, the pumps placed more than 7,700 cubic yards of concrete at the hospital site. “We have a number of employees who have had breast cancer or is close to someone who has had the disease, so it’s a cause that means a lot to many of us,” Mike Dugan, Albanese’s director of concrete pumping, said. The company first painted one of its backhoes pink, which was 22

around the same time its newly ordered 56Z-Meter was scheduled to be painted. The team decided to ask the manufacturer to paint the boom section pink, which Putzmeister agreed to do at no extra charge. “It’s especially fitting that the first project the pink boom has been working on is a hospital expansion,” Dugan said. “We’ve received a lot of positive feedback on it and it feels great to help support such an important cause.” Due to the fact the LPCH project is an expansion of the existing hospital that is still up and running while under construction, the crew faced multiple logistical challenges. The workers were not allowed to block off any streets and had to stage trucks a block away from the site. “Placing concrete in a high-traffic area is always difficult,” he said. “Adding in the regulations surrounding a working hospital makes our job even more challenging.” In addition to the space around the site being limited, real estate on the construction site itself also was in short supply. “Early on in the project we had lots of space to use as pumping platforms. But, as the project has gone up, we have lost most of

low-rise construction that space and have been confined to pump from a couple of small areas. The smaller footprint of the 56Z-Meter fits in these locations, while still allowing us good reach to get the concrete where it needs to go.” The 56Z-Meter’s compact design offers a reduced footprint of 18-foot 8-inch front and 27-foot 3-inch rear spreads, yet it still has a vertical reach of 180 feet 10 inches and a horizontal reach of 163 feet 10 inches. Albanese’s crew found the Z-Fold design of the 56Z especially helpful for this project. “The Z-Fold has allowed us to reach inside the building, as needed,” Dugan said. “For example, we had a pour that required the system to run through the building envelope. With a typical boom, we would have had to place the tip at the exterior of the building and run a hose all the way through. With the Z-Fold, our operator was able to unfold the boom inside the building and get much closer to the pour. This cuts down on time and allows the pour to go more smoothly.” The design of this particular project required a range of 11 different mixes with both normal and lightweight concrete of varying strengths — from a self-consolidating mix to 4,000-8,000 psi mixes. “The 56Z-meter has easily handled the variety of mixes. That’s a testament not only to quality equipment, but also to our opera-

tor. He knows how to handle the pump, as well as the concrete.” The pour schedule has been aggressive and varied. The crew has poured at all hours of the day and at night. They have had pours every day of the week and even multiple pours in one day. The pumps have been consistent and have kept them on schedule. Upon its 2017 debut, the LPCH expansion will add 150 patient rooms, office space and 3.5 acres of healing gardens and green space. The facility’s adaptable design will accommodate cuttingedge protocols and equipment as they develop, offer patient rooms with windows overlooking the gardens, and feature public spaces with large windows and access to decks and patios.
