Managing the Madness Organization takes time to sit down and think through the needs, activities, schedules, and goals for your family in order for the chaos not to overwhelm you. Taking that initial time to lay it all out so everyone can visually see the ins and outs, coming and goings of each family member is crucial to having all the individuals take responsibility for their part and being helpful to others as well. Boundaries are necessary to create space in your timeline, breathing room in your week, or just brain space in your mind. Structure doesn’t restrict you from fun; it actually gives you freedom to have the opportunity to plan. Work, www.SETXFamily.com

school, chores, responsibilities have a specific, designated time and when the required tasks are taken care of you have the freedoms of fun without consequences of getting behind on household chores, dropping the ball on life, or feeling stressed. Coordinating the mayhem requires a whole level of organization left to the likes of drill sergeants and Mary Poppins. After all, school lessons and practices, doctor appointments, PTA, fundraisers really interfere with toddler nap schedules, baby bath time, evening homework, and just plain family time. There are times to delegate, there are times to divide and conquer, and then sometimes you just have to say no. A yearly/ daily planner helps you see what’s on the horizon and prepare ahead of time for birthdays, tournaments, trips, events, and activities. Giving yourself a month-at-a-glance of all of the school projects and performances, basketball, soccer, baseball games, cheer practices, dance competitions, dentist appointment, church commitments, work meetings, family obligations, and house stuff helps you keep juggling the balls and roll with the punches when spontaneous ER trips 6
or urgent work demands throw you a curve ball. I try to plan as far out as I can that way I can claim important dates for MY calendar and if other things come up, they come secondary to what I decide is important. Family reunions, anniversary trips, special birthday plans, holiday travel, etc. are vital to the fabric of your family and should not be trumped by some else’s last minute organization. As the saying goes, “Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part”. Once your circle of people know that they should plan accordingly and communicate effectively if they need to get on your schedule, then life

tends to be less helter-skelter. The better you can anticipate seasons, dates, and times the better you are at working in between the lines of getting the masses fed, bathed, educated, and settled with the least amount of chaos. M e n u planning can be a chore; however a little bit of effort on the front end will prevent a mid-week melt down when you are tempted to reach for cereal to feed the troops. Keeping good nutrition in the tiny tots will all week long with help them maintain focus at school, keep good behavior, and stay well. Don’t let your Wednesday slump be a factor in your kiddo struggling in math. Take some time on your lunch break or while you are waiting at practice to think about your weekly meals. Thinking ahead and having a plan will give you the structure and support when you are exhausted and too tired to think. I make sure to give myself the easier recipes later in the week when I have less energy and nights that I know I will be home late. I go as far as planning out breakfasts www.SETXFamily.com
and lunches, even if it’s a packed lunch, so that if I am sick or have a late meeting dad can easily read the menu on the fridge and know there are ingredients in the pantry for that meal and fill in without missing a beat. Also, the kids really like to know when their requested meals are coming up and when they have to fix their own lunches! If I choose to buy foods that I have preapproved, then I don’t have to be very involved in their lunch making. Budgeting your finances or resources gives you peace of mind that all your bills and obligations are accounted for and you know how much you can carve out for “extra” without adding debt, paying a late charge, or bouncing a check. Knowing what you are facing whether it is good, bad, or ugly helps you make decisions that are within your means and not adding fuel to the fire or putting your family in a position that will come back to bite you. You are the King/Queen of your home, not allowing your children to influence how you spend the money you and/or your spouse earn. desserts, vending machines, drive thrus, and concession stands can burn a hole in your budget faster than a lightning bolt. Prepare for outings with a snack bag, drinks from home. Call the cable/ satellite company to request a 3 month pause on your service to save a few extra dollars to pay toward that unexpected medical bill. There is no shame in keeping a tight fist on your “fun” when it comes to knowing that you have your bills paid and a little bit for emergencies. Take ownership in telling your Washingtons and Lincolns how they are going to serve you – NOT how you are going to serve them! It’s time to manage the madness, if this is an area of weakness for you spill the beans, ask for help, and don’t keep financial secrets! Enjoy life! Have fun! Be diligent and disciplined!
