Parades, concerts, art bring holiday cheer Holiday activities in Fredericksburg hit overdrive when the weekend of Dec. 4-6 arrives with plenty of activities. From the festive night parade, to concerts, to art events, locals and visitors can easily get into the spirit of the season. AfterGlow on Marktplatz Friday, Dec. 4 This family-friendly celebration, sponsored by the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, will kick off at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 with holiday vendors on the downtown square. Amid the twinkling lights, the 30-foot community Christmas tree, and the 26-foot German Christmas Pyramid, more than 20 local nonprofit organizations will sell a variety of gifts, decorations, packaged foods and beverages. A variety of local restaurants and organizations will sell menu items, and a selection of award-winning local wines will be available by the glass. And from 8 to 10 p.m., there will be free photo opportunities with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a children’s activity area. The parade and Afterglow event have been Christmas traditions for more than 20 years. Visit www.lightthenightchristmasparade.com for more information about the parade and the AfterGlow event. Light the Night Christmas Parade Friday, Dec. 4 Holiday cheer will parade down Main Street and beam through the night sky when the Light the Night Christmas Parade kicks off at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4. The event will kick off with a laser light show in front of the courthouse (directly across from Marktplatz). That will be followed by the annual parade. The large procession features entries adorned with holiday lights. The parade will take place, no matter the weather, starting at the intersection of Crockett and Main Streets. The annual parade creates a festive atmosphere for holiday revelers, which is added to with all of Fredericksburg’s historic district buildings outlined in white lights. There also are 80 five-foot Christmas wreaths festooned with red bows adorning the city utility poles, and there is lighted garland strung across Main Street to add to a nostalgic, small-town touch. The entire parade route along Main between Washington and Edison Streets is available for free seating on a first-come, first-serve basis. Attendees should bring folding chairs and blankets. For those wanting VIP seating, the chamber is selling bleacher seats in the 100 block of West Main for $15 per seat. Tickets may be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce’s new offices at 306 E. Austin Street or online at www.lightthenightchristmasparade.com.

HOLIDAY Gift Guide move among the nine scenes while listening to music. Those scenes include the prophet foretelling the birth of Christ, the annunciation of the angel to Mary, the decree of Caesar, the journey to Bethlehem, the innkeeper denying lodging, the angels proclaiming His birth to the shepherds, the manger scene, the presentation of the child to Simeon and the journey of the Magi. Members of the congregation will dress in period costumes to depict the scenes. Vehicles will initially line up on West Schubert Street, turn right onto Adams Street and then take another right into Bethany Lutheran Church’s back parking lot. The production has been expanded to include a lengthier drive along the woods of Town Creek, before exiting onto Austin Street across from Security State Bank and Trust. The expansion was done to accommodate more interesting elements in the nine original scenes. The event is free, although donations are accepted. Money raised from this will be given to the Fredericksburg Food Pantry. For more information, call 830-997-2069 or visit www.bethanyfredericksburg.com.
