Meet Your
NEIGHBORS! the
Jarrett family
Introduce us to the family…
{14}
Introduce us to the family… I am Julie Jarrett and this is my husband Seth, our 16 year old son Jacob and our 12 year old daughter Ella. I co-own Prime Cycle here in Hoboken and it is one of my greatest passions. As a Mom in our square mile, our goal at Prime Cycle is to always offer a high end boutique fitness studio experience at an affordable price with amenities that everyone can enjoy. In addition to owning Prime, my husband and I own a TV and Film Production company that produces reality series for networks like Oxygen, Discovery ID, TLC, TNT, Facebook and movies of the week, mostly for Lifetime. My husband Seth is my true life partner! We have been married for 20 years and have worked together that entire time. We met 24 years
ago when we were both working at MTV and started our own company 12 years ago. Our company is called Jarrett Creative and I always say he is the “creative” in Jarrett Creative. He is an Executive Producer and Director of almost all of our TV series and directs all of our movies. In addition to all of that, he also runs the day to day operations of our production company with me. People always ask if it is hard to work side by side with your spouse and we always laugh and say we wouldn’t have it any other way! I rely on him as well for advice on Prime Cycle- he is much more levelheaded than me. Jacob is currently a Junior at High Tech High School and is a Broadcasting and Media major. We cannot believe we have a teenager looking at colleges! Jacob
// for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com
has always been very active in all sports offered in Hoboken. He has been playing soccer, baseball and basketball on all rec teams since he was 5 years old! Hoboken sports are the absolute best. He is currently the goalie on the Hoboken High School Varsity Soccer team and the goalie on his Hoboken travel soccer team. In his spare time (which is limited) he is either attending a major league sports event or a hip hop or rap concert (Drake is his favorite). As a Broadcasting major his goal is to attend a college that will help him fulfill his dream to be a Sports Broadcaster. Jacob is a very social, outgoing, friendly bright teenager who we are very proud of. Ella is currently a 7th Grader in Hoboken Charter School. Ella truly takes advantage of all types of after school activities offered in Hoboken. She loves hip hop and has been taking classes with Ms. E at Bold Arts since she was 5 years old. And she has also been taking Hip Hop at Studio L for several years. She is an incredible fashion designer and seamstress thanks to years of working with Megan
and her team at M. Avery Designs and she is becoming a master chef with Summers camps and classes at Hudson Table. Ella is a sweet, kind and gentle soul who is always smiling. Her friends and family always ask if she is ever in a bad mood- and the answer is truly no! While she doesn’t know exactly what she wants to be when she is an adult, she is pretty sure animals will be involved. She is currently mother to
our two rescue cats Peyton & Velvet! When did you move to Hoboken? We have lived in Hoboken for 14 years! After living in NYC, then Jersey City then Staten Island, we were desperate to buy a house in the suburbs. After losing 11 bidding wars in Montclair and 7 in Madison, we needed a place to live. Seth continues on page 16

{15}
Jarett Family continued from page 15
suggested Hoboken since he lived here after college. I found us an apartment with a month to month lease with the plan to stay no more than 3 months until we won one of those bidding wars, and then it quickly became apparent that we were destined to live here. We rented a beautiful apartment 13 years ago and have never moved. Our children have had an INCREDIBLE school experience here with Kaplan Preschool, All Saints Episcopal Day School and Hoboken Charter School. We are “lifers” and never plan to leave! How have you seen the community/ neighborhood change? We have seen so much change over the past 14 years! The school offerings have become stronger and better than ever for all ages. We used to be a town where families felt they had to leave before their kids started school and I think that has shifted in the past 5-7 years and more families want to stay and send their kids to school here. I think we are strong examples of how a family can build a great life in Hoboken and their children can get strong educations here both in the public and private school systems- both of which we have been a part of. While it is exciting to see the trendy big businesses come to our small town, I do feel it has shifted our Mom & Pop business mentality and it is becoming harder for residents of the town to start
{16}
or maintain their small businesses but I have faith in our community that they will always support their neighbors. Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. We love to walk to the various fields and watch soccer and baseball games. Even if our kids aren’t playing, we can ALWAYS find neighbors and friends we know at the fields. We love to bike ride (not just indoor ones!). We often do family rides through Hoboken and Jersey City or to Edgewater. We are big fans of the pools at the Shipyard. I love to walk down Washington Street to browse and shop. Everyone who knows me knows everything I wear comes from Dor L’ Dor! Favorite local restaurant? You can ALAWAYS find the Jarretts at BAJA on 14th Street. Always. What do you find most unique about living in this community? We truly don’t think there can be another town in our country that has so much to offer families in such a small amount of space. You can do EVERYTHING in Hoboken. From cooking classes to SAT prep classes to bookstores to rock climbing we have it ALL. I don’t think many other towns can boast as much about this and we have all of this while maintaining an incredibly deep sense of communitywhere everyone knows your name! It’s like Cheers in a square mile.

i! I’m Jennifer Araneo and I moved to Jersey City in 2001. My husband, then boyfriend, already had a place in Hoboken so we eventually got married and moved in together. John works for Merrill Lynch in Lower Manhattan and I have a stress management practice in Hoboken called Mind Body Hoboken - directly above the Starbucks on Newark, it’s a great building, I love it. We have been married for 15 years and have three children, Gianluca, Leila and Johanna. Our children attend Hoboken Catholic Academy. We found HCA to be a wonderful caring community and we are very happy to be a part of it. Gianluca is a wide receiver for the Hoboken Junior Redwings and the centerfielder for the R Fiore RE Little League Team. Leila enjoys nothing more than gymnastics and being a Jr. Redwings cheerleader. Johanna enjoys dancing and playing at the park. Our journey hasn’t been like most, we had our first child in 2007 and a few years later moved to the suburbs. After 4 years we
realized how much we missed city life – the walks, the parks and the water. We sold our home, packed our things and moved to the Cast Iron Lofts in Jersey City. By the time we moved back we had two little girls, I always joke ‘we moved out with one child and came back with three children’. There are trade-offs to living in the city and the suburbs however, I definitely enjoy having everything on one floor – it makes doing the laundry much easier too. Since there is no house to work on, we are able to enjoy our weekends walking, biking, going to the park or traveling. We enjoy being part of a small city community. Some of our favorite places in town are Blue Eyes, it’s like being in Italy and everyone that works there has a great sense of humor. Grand Vin is always nice for a date night, especially for our age group! My kids love the donuts and milkshakes from Schnakenberg’s. In the Fall we enjoy watching Jr. Redwings football games and we always have family fun at Saints Peter and Paul Oktoberfest.

e have two daughters, Amelie and Lyla, who are both in Calabro Elementary School, one of our 4 public schools and the smallest one in the district. It’s a community feeling on steroids. A microcosm of the sense of wider community that Hoboken holds and offers. We all help each other and work together and we love our school and it’s community. I have been serving as Calabros PTO president since the beginning of academic year 2017 and love the work I get to do for, and as part of, the school community. It’s given me the opportunity to be a part of providing enhancements to our kids’ education and promoting the sense of community at the school and — with the other PtOs in the district — among the schools. Being involved has also given me the opportunity to meet a lot of other parents and families and, as a result, some truly great people. People that will be my lifelong friends.
We like take advantage of all that Hoboken has to offer. We love walking around with the girls and seeing friends out at one of the many parks or on the street randomly or at one of the many feasts or festivals. It happens a lot and it’s one of my favorite things about Hoboken — that I can walk down the street and see a familiar face almost all the time.
{18}
We’re loving Zero Otto Uno on Washington and 5th right now. Great food all around. Actually, I haven’t had a bad thing there yet. There is no kids menu per se, but the girls
love it and always eat well. When a place can offer great, real food for adults and kids that’s a huge win and they get my vote every time. I have to also recognize Bangkok City who has helped me out making “the real thing” for my Thai mother almost every day. It’s not the usual stuff that you would see on a menu, but they make these dishes — like Thai comfort food - for me all the time to bring home for her.
I am now running for a seat on the Board of Ed, further embedding myself in the Hoboken community. I am truly inspired by the progress that the District has made and that our superintendent, specifically, has made. I am not a politician, nor do I want to be, even though I get that it’s been a very politicized position and race in the past. My goal is to add a new, additionally supportive voice to the board and to represent our community of families. More people are choosing to stay and raise their families here and they deserve the best, most dynamic schools there are to offer. I strongly believe that Dr. Johnson and the Board are committed to that and my views and goals align with what is being accomplished and sought to be accomplished. We have improvements to make, and nothing is ever perfect, but I believe with members that have new views, backgrounds and experiences on the board, we can continue the dynamic change and goal of overall truly across the board and in every public school - achievement and improvement. I am proud of what has been accomplished so far, I want to be a part of the next steps.

Loria H
family
i! We are the Loria Family! We live in Hoboken, NJ with our 2 daughters, Frankie (8) and Lucie (6). In 2012, we purchased and renovated a brownstone on Park Ave. So uptown Hoboken is where we call “home”. Our favorite thing about Hoboken is the energy that comes from being so close to NYC and all the diversity that comes with living in an urban area. Although our happy place is the beach, we love being able to walk everywhere in town and go into the city. The girls love playing at the park and running into friends -new and old!
Mike has lived in Hoboken for almost 20 years and he loves to use the city’s bike share to get downtown to Crunch Gym before taking the ferry into the city for work. Hoboken has changed so much during the time Mike has been here, but, being a foodie (and great cook), he loves the many restaurant options in town. The family’s favorites include Elysian Cafe, Sorrelina and Shnackenburgs. Elysian feels like a neighborhood joint and you always see friends there. Sorrelina has a great happy hour and a variety of dishes that seasonally change. Frankie and Lucie love the milkshakes and old-school feels at Schnacks! We also love to venture into Jersey City and our favorite family spot is Porta for pizza. I’m a Pilates Instructor at Positively Pilates (which holds classes in the Monroe Center). This is my third year teaching and I love it! There are so many awesome people in Hoboken and I get to spend time with them
through my classes and also share my love for the Pilates method. I regularly take classes at Work it Out, Local Barre and Hoboken Fitness. There are so many places to exercise in this town- something for everyone. Frankie and Lucie love to participate in various activities around town. The girls’ favorites include Gravity Vault for rock-wall climbing classes, voice lessons at Garden Street Music and dance classes at Mile Square Theatre. This year they are participating in the recreational fall soccer season and Daddy is volunteering as a coach! You may see them learning to ride bikes at the pop-up park or scooting around the waterfront and taking in those beautiful city views. The girls love their town and they love their school... the Hoboken Charter School. HCS has a wonderful program called LOTS (Lunch on the Students) and I take the lunches from our school to the Hoboken Shelter each week. It’s nice to know that both children and adults can help our Hoboken community with a simple thing like packing an extra lunch. I think it’s a very special program and I’m proud of HCS for implementing service learning. Living in Hoboken has always been a fun adventure for us. There are always so many new places and people popping up in town. We’ve also had to say good-bye to many people too...but no matter who comes and goes, Hoboken remains a place that is so very special to everyone who has ever lived here.

Parents will learn basic aquatic safety and have a positive experience with their children that can help them grow closer. Parents and children are introduced to the repetitive movements that become skill building blocks. While focusing on comfort and relaxing in the warm water environment, guardians are encouraged to challenge each child’s skill level. Using songs, floating mats, and toys, the classes are structured to help engage your child and most importantly, encourage fun!

Skyclub’s Toddler and Me class continues to provide positive aquatic experience for parents and toddlers, ages 18 to 34 months. Creative games are used to teach toddlers breath control, big arm movements, and leg
kicks. This is an active 30-minute class that teaches toddlers to start moving more independently through the water under their parents’ guidance. Skyclub’s Big Tots class is designed for children ages 24 to 35 months who are ready to do more independent exploration of the aquatic environment with help from parents. At this point the instructor begins to prepare the children to work directly with an instructor on their own by using flotation devices, going underwater and getting in and out of the pool alone. The program provides opportunities for parent-child teams to socialize with each other. Pool Facts: • Skyclub Pool has 4 lanes. • The temperature of the pool remains at 85 degrees plus or minus a degree. • Square footage : 1,800 sqf = 20 yards by 10 yards (18.3 meters by 9.1 meters.) • Skyclub's salt water pool is much gentler on the eyes and skin by using lower levels of chlorine. Sky Club’s Aquatic Kids program is designed for all ages and abilities. They have small group classes, four students to one instructor, with experienced instructors who are passionate about teaching kids to be comfortable and confident in the water.
