Sweetah’s Gluten Free Bake Shop DOYLESTOWN, PA Delightfully sweet, without the wheat
A
t Sweetah’s Gluten Free Bake Shop in Doyles town, dessert deprivation is a thing of the past. Gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley, helps baked goods hold together. Some people are allergic to it or have trouble digesting it, so have to avoid many desserts. At Sweetah’s, owner/ baker Beverly Berkeley uses premium gluten free, soy-free flours, and mostly organic ingredients sourced locally whenever possible, to turn out glorious gluten-free baked goods even those with sensitive tummies can enjoy. Sweetah’s custom cakes can be adorned with locally sourced organic flowers and herbs from Studio Sprig and Blue Moon Acres. In addition to gluten-free treats, Sweetah’s also offers a variety of lip-smacking vegan confections.
10 C R AV E
Beverly has a knack for creating melt-in-yourmouth favorites for her grateful customers. “People thank me because they are able to eat an apple cider donut, carrot cupcake, or brownie again,” she said. Her foray into baking started because she personally felt better on a gluten-free diet. She turned her hobby into a business when career burnout left her feeling ready for a dramatic change. “Since I always loved to cook and eat gluten-free and vegetarian meals, Sweetah’s is an extension of that passion,” she said. Started in 2016, Sweetah’s Gluten Free Bake Shop quickly found a fan base of support at local farmers markets. Beverly soon opened a retail space inside a local bed and breakfast. In August, Sweetah’s moved into its first independent bake shop on East Oakland Avenue, conveniently located right around the corner from the B & B. Her decadent desserts tempt even those who don’t have to avoid gluten to stop in for a yummy treat and steaming cup of organic coffee. If you’re not in Doylestown, a wholesale program makes Sweetah’s gluten-free and vegan bakery items available at select area retail outlets. The more Beverly learns about her customers’ dietary needs, the more passionate she becomes about developing new recipes. She responds to customer feedback, so look for savory items and sugar-free options to join the mix soon. Take note: Sweetah’s is now taking pre-orders for holiday desserts. f your ideal Broadway experience includes a short drive, easy parking in well-lit garages, a relaxed meal and reasonably priced tickets for a New York quality musical or play, your ideal has found its home in West Chester, PA. Under Kristin McLaughlin Mitchell, Founder and Producing Artistic Director of The Resident Theatre Company, Broadway style theatre is now local. Kristin brings over two decades of New York theatre experience to Chester County, first as an actor, then a director. “With over 65 eateries in West Chester alone, this is the ideal place for high-quality theatre. It is so easy to have a great meal here, come to a performance and then go out for after dinner drinks or dessert.” Last year’s “Spamalot” opened with a splash—it was a complete sell-out. The 2018-2019 shows are “Evita” in October, “Lend Me a Tenor” for the holidays and “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” in April. Kristin auditions for talent in both New York City and Philadelphia, choosing actors, set designers, choreographers and costume designers with professional experience. “We cast three local teens in Evita as well,” Kristin explains, clearly pleased with the local
16 C R AV E
talent she found. “It’s exciting to see them work with a professional cast.” In this community, Kristin wants to bring Broadway even closer to home. “The closest most people get to actors in New York is standing outside the stage door to get an autograph. Here we host events where the public can meet the actors.” Opportunities for close encounters of the theatrical kind include hosting an out of town actor during rehearsals and the shows run as well as attending after parties and other events. Even with an ambitious season in front of her, Kristin bubbles with ideas for the future. “Definitely children’s theatre. And a master class for aspiring Broadway actors.” The Resident Theatre Company allows local residents to enjoy an intimate theatre experience, with professional talent close to home. Check online for more information, tickets, subscriptions and senior/group rates. All performances at: The Uptown Knauer Performing Arts Center 226 N. High Street, West Chester, PA www.RTCwc.org

BR ANDY WINE BALLET PRESENTS
The Nutcracker
J
oin us this December for the holiday classic, The Nutcracker! Set to the famous score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, this ballet tells the story of Clara in a small German town in the late 19th century as her family prepares for a traditional Christmas Eve party. Soon the guests and Clara’s mysterious Uncle Drosselmeyer appears at the party and presents her with the most wonderous toy she has ever seen, a Nutcracker! As the party ends and Clara is sent to bed, thoughts of her beloved Nutcracker dance in her head. Carrying the doll, she leaves the safety of her warm bed and tiptoes downstairs. There she is drawn into a frightening nightmare; the intrusion of huge mice led by the vicious Mouse King! Soon her beloved toy, The Nutcracker comes to life as soldiers enter to declare battle on the Mouse King. The soldiers win this fierce competition led by the heroic Nutcracker. Clara and the dolls are saved! Slowly snow begins to fall as Uncle Drosselmeyer turns the living room into a beautiful snow scene. The Snow Queen and King dance with what appears to be hundreds of snowflakes. The Snow Queen then directs Clara to the Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy as a reward for killing the evil Mouse King. In

celebration, the Sugar Plum Fairy welcomes Clara and requests that dancers from all over the world entertain them. Clara is much appreciative and all ends well in an exquisite celebration with Clara and all her friends in the magical Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. Meghan Bergman is a fine art ceramic sculptor who also makes handcrafted pottery and commissioned pieces for local breweries and coffee houses. Her sculptural vessels are statuesque earthly forms full of sculpted caverns, imprinted textures, and subtle coloration. Meghan’s sculptures are inspired by nature, resembling barnacle incrusted ocean artifacts. Her works command a presence, unique and powerful, whether in a gallery or in one’s home. Some pieces are very large, almost three feet tall, while others are smaller-sized and can have utilitarian purposes as vases or terrariums. Her light-filled new studio in Kennett Square is now open to the public by appointment.

Ellen Catanzaro is a fine arts painter and creator of very popular textile designs. Mark Dance Fine Art Painter www.markdance.com
Mark Dance is a fine arts oil painter in the tradition of the masters of the Pennsylvania Impressionist movement, Childe Hassam and John Twachtman. His artistic heritage goes back to artists, illustrators and architects from the 1700s, and those historic ties help confirm his own deep connection to the Brandywine Valley, where the arts have been inspired and flourished for centuries. Mark’s beautiful sketches and oil paintings reflect and respond to the beauty and rhythms of the Brandywine Valley landscape. His colorization and technique hark back to an earlier time; full of quiet beauty, deliberate, thoughtful brushwork, lovingly composed in reverence to the timeless beauty of our historic environment. Mark exhibits rarely, but when he does, there is magic in the room. The viewer is transported to a place in nature that is calm, inviting and full of possibilities.

Heather Davis is an extraordinary representational oil painter who without doubt will be one of the most recognized artists of our time. With steadfast attention to detail, superhuman defiance of all of nature’s cataclysms (she has painted in snowstorms, in the middle of the Brandywine River, and faced more than a few curious creatures) Heather braves every impediment to recreate the natural image that she wishes to represent on canvas. With a monumental show at Chester County Art Association “Admiration of Souls” November 8–November 29, of 2018, Heather painted 9 situational portraits of area art giants, done in her characteristic high chromo colorization with such extraordinary detail that it defies earthly explanation. Heather is that most rare artistic genius, and we are lucky enough to have her here in Chester County.

Lisa Leonard Connected by Reminders of Hope
We live life together. We laugh, we sing, we explore, we’re silly. But we also cry and scream and fall apart. We apologize and give each other grace. Lots of grace. We say it’s okay to be honest and imperfect. This is brave. This is love. This is brave love.

o Lisa Leonard, this is the very embodiment of brave love—the unapologetic, unflinching stamina of hope. Lisa’s desire to share hope in a broken world manifests itself through her artisan jewelry and custom pieces. Lisa forms each new product from raw, precious metals and gemstones, building into them the essence of purpose, and giving meaning to each piece. From there, each person will add their own story and cherish their ring, necklace, or bracelet for its personal significance. “People tell their stories through our products,” says Lisa. “Our pieces are a reminder of hope and a way to cherish loved ones and fond memories forever.” Stephen Leonard, the company’s President and CEO, recently launched a men’s line with original

arinella started in jewelry by making custom pieces for a wedding. Believing in a unique approach to weddings, she created head pieces and jewelry for the bridal party with an emphasis on originality. She uses the bridesmaid’s dresses and their personalities to guide her creation of unique jewelry for each attendant. It’s important to her that her creations are worn on more than just the big day. “The best compliment I get is when a bride tells me she ran into a member of her bridal party and she was wearing the jewelry I designed.” Over the years her work has grown considerably and she creates bracelets, necklaces and earrings for both everyday wear and special occasions. Her work often combines traditional pieces with modern material to create a statement that gets worn. “I take unused items from the back of a jewelry drawer, which never see the light of day, and repurpose them into pieces which can be worn daily. They are fashionable, yet bursting with memories of our loved ones.” Blending the traditional with modern, she takes a classic look like freshwater pearls, intersperses

them with modern beads, leather or even another vintage piece to create a unique new piece that gets worn. Marinella calls this “Modern Vintage.” Her collection includes beautiful, artistic combinations of stones, vintage pieces and leather. A novel bracelet is made from old pearls and a chunky leather closure for a unique twist, or leather bracelets incorporated with vintage brooches. Her collection also includes a wide selection of protection bracelets. Prayer beads and stamped medallions embellish many of her pieces. These custom touches give the wearer a physical reminder of intentions they want to guide their day. A cross may signify a reminder to forgive for one client, a stamped wave a reminder of the need for balance for another. “The stones themselves can impact the wearer, agate is reputed to imbue wisdom and confidence.” Marinella taps her own protection bracelet for emphasis. “I make pieces that are perfectly imperfect, like life. I want people to be able to accessorize with ease and intent.” West Chester Home Studio (484) 354.4990 www.marinellajewelryshop.com Hours: by appointment

A DORN GOODS CENTRE VILLE, DE A graceful blend of artisan mercantile & epicurean pantry

dorn Goods in Centreville, DE brings a fresh idea to the table: a one-of-a-kind, small-town shopping destination experience. Tucked inside a classic 1930s bungalow a stone’s throw from the PA border, owner Jennifer Steiner calls Adorn Goods a modern general store. Adorn Goods is an amazing resource for unique home décor and guest accessories, but there’s also a kids’ corner, pet items, and vintage candy jars overflowing with tasty sweets. A sprinkling of curated antique furnishings from Pennsylvania and Delaware mingle with contemporary artisan-made linens, tabletop items, and sparkling glassware. Sassy and savvy handbags and totes add a fashion component to the mix. There are gifts galore and signature giftwrap is complimentary. Pre-wrapped gifts to grab & go, and customized gift packages for business and personal giving are especially popular. Ready to be surprised? Adorn Goods also stocks luscious gourmet fare to carry out. Refrigerator and freezer cases are stuffed with prepared meals, cheeses, and ready-to-bake treats created by local chefs or specialty epicurean companies. When time is of the essence, grab a delicious casserole or entree to bring home. (These meals also make a thought-

ful gift.) Beverages are available, too. Now that’s convenience. An ample supply of distinctive pantry choices abound. Pick up a few irresistible indulgences and never be without a hostess gift for spur-of-themoment invitations. “We take pride in showcasing wares and epicurean items not likely to be found nearby,” Jennifer said. The cherry-on-top is that all purchases are tax-free. What’s not to like? A sampling of Adorn Goods epicurean fare can be enjoyed at the shop. “We have a large farm table inside, and tables in the back yard in spring, summer, and fall. We have found food and retail to be a wonderful combination. Beautiful things create a nice atmosphere,” Jennifer said. Adorn Goods offers seasonal cooking classes and other store-hosted special events. The shop can also be booked as a venue for private events. “For a cocktail party, we can accommodate about 50 people,” Jennifer said. A shopping discount is extended to guests. Adorn Goods specializes in delivering an uncommon, synergistic shopping experience. It’s strength lies in its versatility, selection, and friendly personalized service.
