Welcome to Wickenburg ARIZONA.

THAT IS JUST THE WAY (TEAM ROPING) GO

Impressive. This year the team counts have been unbelievable. We have no hard way of measuring the total teams at all the ropings this season, however my guess is that the total team ropers in Arizona must be up around 25%. It is truly amazing to see that type of growth in one year. All you have to do to get a feel for how many team ropers are here is look at the schedule on the back page of the Arizona Jackpot. In the third week of January there were 54 team ropings advertised. That is 54 team ropings in 7 days! Truly mind boggling.

A couple of weeks ago at Dynamite Arena there were 200 teams in a #10 three-steer roping. It was a beautiful Arizona day and the roping is going to pay six monies in the average with first paying roughly $3,000. We bring the top 20 teams back to the short round, run them slowest to fastest, and finally we get to the high call back. I'm watching from the catch pen end of the arena. The steer runs a bit and when the header throws his loop the steer tips his head back and the loop waves off. No time, high team goes out.

NTR FINALS AND THE HORSE SALE There are two things I would like to point out about the upcoming NTR National Final and The Horse sale at Rancho Rio. First, we have changed the NTR VIP $10,000 added ropings this year. You must be to 21 years of age or older to rope—besides that anyone can enter these ropings as long as you have a current NTR VIP membership. Secondly, we have listed contact information for each of our consignors, so please contact the owner of the horse, or horses, you are interested in prior to sale day. It really gives you an opportunity to ask questions and hear more about them.

As ropers we have all been in that same spot, certainly disappointed, we often let our competitive spirit get the best of us. Not this guy. In talking to the roper right after that run he was so cool. I apologized for the steer and his response was, “Like Texas Ranger MLB manager Ron Washington said, ‘That's the way baseball go.’” I love that and it's so true in team roping as well. It is probably the best lesson I've ever learned in the sport—it's just the way team roping go. Thanks for the lesson in sportsmanship.

Good Luck Ropers!

Ty Yost

HOOK UP AND GET OUTTA TOWN The NTR's Livin' for Ropin' Tour (L4R) stand-alone events offer exceptional payouts and prizes to ropers including Cactus Saddlery trophy saddles, Gist buckles and one-of-a-kind trophy trucks. The January 2019 L4R event took place at Rancho Rio and spanned over two Saturdays, with a #8 Saddle Up roping on January 12 and a #9 Truck Roping on January 19. New Mexico's Luis Mendiaz Marin took home the new RAM 3500 from Wickenburg. Mendiaz finished 1st in the average with Destree Yazzie to take home $7,000 Cash & Trophy Buckles. The duo also clocked the fast-time of the short round to earn themselves new Cactus Saddlery Trophy Saddles. For more information on the L4R Tour visit nationalteamroping.com. SUPERPUNCHER! With the release of one "big nasty loop" Anthony "Rooster" Salazar went down in team roping history as the first to slick horn Rio—The Nation's Wildest Bounty Steer. Anthony Salazar took to teaching himself how to team rope in junior high by riding out in the various pastures around his California home, with a half dozen ropes to track his neighbor's cattle. “I was out in the pasture across from our place and Bronc Boehnlein, who was working for Jeremy Gorham, saw me out there,” Salazar recalled with a laugh. "He came flying through the gate and chased me down in the truck. Jeremy just said, ‘Hey, if he wants to chase cattle let's just hire him.’ I've been there ever since.” Gorham owns and operates Euclid Stockyards in Ontario, California, that supplies a bulk of the roping steers throughout the state. Gorham also produces team roping events, and that's where he first put Salazar to work—it's also where he earned his very honest nickname. “He showed up to one of our ropings with a hole cut out of his cowboy hat and a green mohawk sticking out of it,” Gorham laughed. “I told him you look like a dang rooster.”

Now, more people than not know him simply as Rooster. “My uncle had a mohawk a long time ago. I was just goofing off and it stuck,” said Salazar, who still sports the look underneath his straw hat, though you won't see him with it spiked nearly as often these days. “It's a little hard to rope with it spiked. Plus, it's a lot of work.” Just before he got his shot at roping Rio during the January 19th Livin’ for Ropin’ Tour stop, Gorham pulled Salazar aside and offered (secret) advice on how to tame the beast. With his Classic medium heel rope, Salazar rode up on his little red roan mare he fittingly calls Roany Pony. “I actually got this horse off of the reservation in New Mexico,” Salazar said. "She was headed to slaughter. I liked her size, so I took her.” Although she's not much taller than Rio, and certainly more narrow, Roany Pony never backed down as Salazar built a massive loop and slick horned The Nation's Wildest Bounty Steer.

“Everyone told me to grab the hardest rope I could find,” Salazar explained. "It was pretty brand new. I probably had maybe four runs on it. I just built a big nasty loop, took Jeremy's advice and then I closed my eyes. It's kind of funny. Ty actually bought Rio from Jeremy's sale there in Chino. I used to work the sale there all the time. I guess it all kind of came full circle.” In addition to his mean, green mohawk, you'll often see Salazar roping and working with a mask on due to his extreme allergies to dirt and horses. When he was 10 years old, Salazar was also diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome, a chronic kidney disorder. While both ailments occasionally affect his roping, neither will ever keep him from doing what he loves. “My kidneys just kind of shut down, and I had to start dialysis about eight months ago. It's difficult to manage the dialysis itself, but I feel the best I've felt since I was 10. I could never do much before. Now, I can work out, and I've found I can actually ride more too. The allergies and the kidney issues, it bothers me sometimes, but roping is all I want to do so I just keep doing it.”

FREIGHT FLYER

It's an eight-hour drive from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Wickenburg, Arizona. But in a 172 Cutlass RG four-seater, single-engine airplane—which is how Jake South usually makes the trip when he's not hauling horses—it only takes two and a half. South and his two brothers were raised on the family ranch in Horse Springs, New Mexico, where they all learned to fly at an early age. With a runway on the ranch, it was nearly as common for them as driving a car. His dad, Wayne, owns and operates South Aero, Inc., based out of Albuquerque. Their niche is flying freight—mainly as sub-contractors for UPS—and all three boys now work for their dad. “He did charter for a couple of years, but it just wasn't his thing,” South explained. “My dad has been flying since he was 17. He's really passionate about it. When I left for college all I wanted to do was rope. I had no interest in the family business. I thought I was going to make the NFR by the time I was 20, and I realized that was ridiculous where I was

14

at. I finished school in Las Cruces, and I started flying to get my licenses. I realized I really do enjoy it. It's probably my second favorite thing to do other than rope.” South has a bay head horse consigned to this year's horse sale (Lot 25, Peppy Lil Pistol, aka "Yoda") and plans to fly back and forth as often as he can to continue jackpotting and showing him to potential buyers until sale day. On the off days, he'll be home working flight runs or working on the ranch. “Having the ability to fly places is definitely a resource for roping and rodeo,” South added. “This summer to get my hours up I threw my horse in with a buddy and I flew to the World Series ropings in Texas. I got to fly all over the state. I love flying in West Texas. There's so much freedom with flying—you don't have speed limits or the limitations of the roads. You just go wherever you want.”

the ultimate matchmakers

Chad & Paje Turner of Turner Performance Horses have spent a lifetime developing an equine match-making empire that spans nearly every discipline. With six horses consigned to the Hershberger Performance Horse sale, two in the San Antonio Stock Show Performance Horse Sale, two more in Wickenburg's inaugural Cowgirl Cadillacs Sale, and another two in the fifth Annual The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio, Chad and Paje Turner are seasoned veterans when it comes to selling exceptional, proven and versatile equine athletes. Those 12 horses in four sales in 30 days are just a small dent in the business they will do throughout the year from their winter home in Wickenburg, Arizona, and their summer home in East Helena, Montana. While they are now one of team roping's most well-known power couples when it comes to making great horses and matching them with the right jockey, Chad and Paje are far from an overnight success. They have spent a lifetime building their business, Turner Performance Horses, and it started long before they ever met.

horse crazy

Raised in New Palestine, Indiana, Paje was the horse-crazy little girl who never outgrew it. “I started taking English lessons when I was 4 years old, showing Hunters, Jumpers, Saddlebred and Arabian horses until I was about 9,” Paje recalled. “I worked to earn my first double-registered Palomino Quarter Horse and I showed him at the AQHA PHBA (Palomino Horse Breeders Association) shows in the western events. I had to work for everything. If I wanted to go to a horse show on Saturday, I had to clean tack for three days. By the time I got on their back I was just so happy to be there it didn't really matter what I was doing.”

16

2019 NTR NATIONAL FINALS V • NATIONALTEAMROPING.COM

In high school Paje picked up barrel racing and continued honing that discipline through college competing on the rodeo team at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky, while also showing on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association in both equitation and horsemanship. After graduating with a degree in architecture Paje moved to Missoula, Montana, where she soon added roping, reining and cutting to her repertoire of equine events. “I just wanted to get more experience in all disciplines. I had delved into everything from saddle bred to hunter jumpers to barrel racing, and I was lacking that part of it.” Paje still loves to show and as far as a favorite discipline she truly enjoys them all—she even keeps a hunter under saddle horse at the house today. Ultimately, it comes down to just having a good ride on whatever she's competing in—and on—at the time. “I think what it is, I love horses so much, that as long as I'm on their back I'm happy doing that in that moment. Showing almost outdoes my want to rope. I love it. That said, being able to sell horses is so similar to showing. It's all about presentation. I think that's part of what drew me to it.”

trainer in training

Two thousand miles due west of New Palestine, a young Chad Turner was learning the ropes of the horse business in Redding, California, from his parents who were both heavily involved in the industry. At a young age he too started showing Quarter Horses.

Just before his teen years, Chad lost interest in the horses and got involved in motocross. He came close to picking up a national sponsorship but ultimately was drawn back to the horse training business—this time as a young up-and-coming team roper, calf roper and occasional bareback rider. From then on, he basically had to train his own horses, so that's what he did, and he never looked back. When he was 18, Chad's parents threw a dart at a map of Big Sky country and it landed on Victor, Montana. Chad stayed behind, but a couple of years later joined them. Not long after, mutual friends introduced him to Paje, and Turner Performance Horses was unknowingly born. “For the first six months I kept telling him you have to grow up. I was hesitant,” Paje laughed. “I told him if he wanted to go to college, I would even do his homework for him, but he still said, ‘I'm not going.’ I was definitely pulling my reins back a little.” Chad's parents were also not thrilled that their son had skipped out on college to train horses but after graduating high school he worked as an assistant to both an equine dentist and a farrier and got involved in ranch versatility, cutting and working cow horse to expand his knowledge base. “He could really be a vet on his own,” Paje added. “He has developed so many skills along the way. He is a great teacher and he loves helping our clients.” Fast forward several months into their relationship, and Paje was riding horses after work and helping Chad train. “This is a 24-hour per day job. I'd get off work and head to the indoor arenas, clean pens, whatever needed to be done and it got to a point I really enjoyed it and saw there was money to be made.”

a business is born

As their business was taking shape their extensive experience in so many disciplines and an ability to really look outside the box made all the difference. “We went and worked with different trainers and clinicians. There are so many well-renowned and well-respected people we owe our career to. You definitely don't learn this overnight. It takes years of hands-on experience and the knowledge and the help of others.” They reached far and wide, developing lasting relationships with a number of reputable ranches, to find the right horses to bring into their program. They also knew full-well that not every horse you buy is going to work out. They developed their business model early on and have continued to build on it. “First of all, we were all about integrity. You have to sell the right horses to the right people," Paje said. "You can't be that person who lies. This business we created is about fitting people with their horses. We started advertising and really marketing our horses. In college I had dabbled in everything from pre-law to marketing and even that all started to play a role.”

The NTR Finals and The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio signal the end of the winter season for Chad and Paje Turner. They are able to relax and enjoy life in the desert for a bit before heading north and starting to prep for their own horse sale, The League of Legends, held each September in Livingston, Montana.

quick tips

Here are 10 basic tips that can make buying and selling horses a breeze. A little effort can go along ways for both buyers and sellers.

TIPS FOR BUYERS 1) Honestly disclose your riding ability 2) Take time to ride the horse prior to bidding 3) Spend the money to vet check prior to bidding 4) Do your research 5) Buy from a reputable seller

CHECKS IN THE BANK

1) Have a well-trained horse 2) Have your horse showroom ready 3) Always be honest and professional 4) Take great photos or hire someone who can 5) Provide a clear and concise description

LOT 11: An extremely kind, talented and good-looking gelding, Bank is sure to fit your bill. We welcome you to come and try him at the ranch or any roping. The partner to have in the roping arena, ranch riding classes, cutting, cow horse, mounted shooting or on the trails! Smooth to ride, lopes in the palm of your hand, spins, slides and soft in the bridle. Surprises on the ranch and trail do not scare Bank. Accomplished, as he has been shown in the heeling at the Rope Horse Futurity as well as at the NCHA Futurity. A very fancy, and safe heel, breakaway and calf horse. Sound and has zero vices. A sale highlight! Will be hauled to major ropings and shows until the sale! FMI and videos visit TurnerPerformanceHorses.com or call 406-381-2347.

Eight years ago, Turners fell into a property in Wickenburg and started splitting their time between the two locations. “We had stayed in Texas for a month at a time for about four years before we came to Arizona,” Paje said. “The reason we came here is because I would be wearing the same down coat and wild rag that I was wearing in Montana, plus it was another day's drive. We are so fortunate to live where we live in the winter. It's more than we ever asked for. We love Arizona and we love Wickenburg.”

Timing is everything and about the same time that Turners found themselves in Wickenburg the town exploded as “The Team Roping Capital” and in turn their business took off like a rocket. “Within the last six years we've been able to hire employees and we have an outstanding staff that is very influential with our program. Between us we have extensive experience in nearly every single equine discipline. We are just now building a new facility on our property here and our vision is finally becoming a reality.”

TIPS FOR SELLERS

selling for success

Chad and Paje Turner, Turner Performance Horses spend approximately half of the year at their home in Wickenburg, Arizona, and the other six months in East Helena, Montana. They consign horses to a multitude of sales all across the Western United States. When they're not training and prepping sale horses you'll find them enjoying time on the lake. PHOTO BY CHRISTY BURLESON PHOTOGRAPHY

2019 NTR NATIONAL FINALS V • NATIONALTEAMROPING.COM

In 2017 Chad and Paje introduced their League of Legends horse sale to the market. With a plethora of diversified horses, they wanted to be able to offer them to the public in one place. From training to showing to buying and selling the Turners have truly done it all. “The sale had been in our minds for 12 years. We just couldn't come up with the guts to do it. We had wanted to start one in Las Vegas after the Double $$ left, but when the opportunity presented itself in Montana, we finally took it.” This year will mark the third annual League of Legends, September 6-7, at the Heart K in Livingston, Montana. What it all boils down to for Chad, Paje and Turner Performance Horses are the success stories. That's their goal and that's why they do what they do. Eight years ago, Dave Eaton, Benton City, Washington, called with a request. “He told me, ‘I'm 60 years old, I don't ride much anymore, I rope the Heel-O-Matic and I rarely rope live cattle, what do you have,’” Paje explained. “He bought a son of Cat Itchi sight unseen. He's gone on to win a lot of money on that horse, I'd say close to $100,000 with his son Jeremy in Reno and picked up some big checks at the World Series Finale. He recently called and wants to come to Arizona this spring and be mounted to rope at some NTRs. We've watched him go on and be successful with a horse from our program and that's the ultimate reward.”

LOT 1: Redman is a gorgeous, true 15.2 HH Red Roan gelding that is just a rendering of what a great head horse should be. He has the legs, bone and feet to hold up his frame. He has a beautiful stride that is not choppy nor clumsy and is smooth to ride. He is soft in the face and trained to move off your leg. He has been ridden and roped on a lot outside. We started roping live cattle out of the box on him approximately nine months ago. He is a gentleman in the box, runs to the hip and is developing a great “throttle down" move in the corner. He has speed to spare. He will be hauled all winter to ropings throughout the Wickenburg area. A kind, gentle gelding with the mindset and talent to go as far as you would like in his roping career.

Haugen Performance Horses Philip and Bridget Haugen, Weatherford, OK, 580.772.4296 OSU SONNYS SLIDER SIRE: OSU POWER SLIDE GRAY BETSY MR TYREE RED DAM: MS JACKIT TYREE PATTY JACKIE CANA

POWER SLIDIN SETH LOT 58: "Slider" is a beautiful bay gelding that we've had around since the fall of 2015. He was being used on a ranch when I bought him, and we've been roping in the arena on him since. I've used him extensively halter breaking colts and starting colts in the round pen. I've rode him at US and World Series ropings and at some PRCA rodeos this last summer. Slider is so stout and strong but gentle as can be and rides around handy like a little horse. He is safe for any rider and would fit a 3 or 4 and up in the team roping. Everybody at our place has roped on him from a 3 to a 7. Has really good timing in the heeling and breakaway roping as well. Scores great and is as solid as they come. Very broke and user friendly, he's as good a head horse as I've ever trained. I think you'll like him.
