German Smurfs Break World Record

Great ball of smurfs! This is the most smurfs we’ve seen in all

of Papa Smurfs 543 years! It’s just a Smurfcation… German Smurfs gathered in Lauchringen in Southern Germany on Feb. 16 to try and break the Guinness record for largest gathering of Smurfs in the world.

Smurfs have been entrancing people since the 1950s. In 2009

saw the first record set in Swansea, Welsh, 2,510 “Smurfs” showed up. Germany has tried a few times, failing their attempt in 2016 with a mere 2,149. On February 16th of this year, Germany made another attempt, only this time they got 2,762 Smurfs. There were people who took their own twist to the comic icons. The rules are very clear. People must cover all of their bare skin blue and wear only Smurf attire. The attire includes a blue shirt and white pants and shoes. While they strongly suggest that you wear a white hat, many of the fans opted to dress as Papa Smurf with a red hat. Congratulations to the new record holders in the village of Lauchringen, Germany.

W BY: MELANIE TA

April/May/June showers bring July heat and mosquitoes. It was bound to happen – these little annoyances that are with us more than our own family and often they come unannounced. Or do they? There are many keys to keeping these disease bearing insects away from our outdoor activities. Since they are our biggest deterrent as to why we stay inside, it’s time to fight back. Do: Use wind force

Do: Calm down

These little blood suckers hate anything above 1 MPH. If you find yourself at the beach, make sure you choose a spot that has a breeze. Have access to an outlet? Great! Use a plug-in fan. If you keep the air flow directed at the lower half of your body. Mosquitoes tend to fly close to the ground to avoid the wind, so the wind from the fan acts like an offensive line.

The key chemical composition that mosquitoes find desirable is carbon dioxide. When your heart rate is elevated, your body produces carbon dioxide. So what increases this number? Well, from exercise to alcohol consumption or even eating spicy foods, anything that increases your metabolic rate will increase the carbon dioxide. If you’re overweight or pregnant, this can also increase your carbon dioxide.

Don’t: Swallow a particular food or supplement If anyone is trying to sell you the magic pill that will repel mosquitoes, don’t take them. They haven’t been proven to work.

10

THE BINGO NUGGET // JULY 2019

Don’t: Purchase (waste money on) citronella candles and coils They just don’t work and there are much better natural insect repellents. The candles and coils only work if their scent

gets between you and the mosquito. Even if you surround yourself by candles or coils, they just aren’t that effective. Consider planting the Bingo Nugget approved mosquito repelling plants.

Do: Purchase tighter fabrics Mosquitoes can’t fight through the tight weave. While cotton and linen are fantastic in the heat, synthetic fibers, like athletic wear, tend to be woven tightly enough to keep them out. If it’s a garment that has sun protection, this will be tight enough as well.

Don’t: Rely on technology Why... why am I even finding myself typing this? There may be an app for everything but there is not an app that will act as a mosquito repellent. Save your data.

Do: Rub the DEET on DEET is the scary word and chemical mess. Yes, you can get a reaction to it, although rare, and this generally occurs when you swallow or snort it. Most people generally don’t understand how to apply it properly. Just like sunscreen, the best mosquito repellent will be the one you actually use. Don’t spray it on like it’s perfume. Do squirt/ spray a little onto your hands and rub anywhere you find your skin is exposed and thin. Don’t worry about purchasing one of those bands, they don’t work.

how to grow a

mosquito free garden Lemon Balm

Peppermint

This member of the mint family has white flowers and a gentle lemony scent, as well as some healing properties. It’s particularly good at keeping biting insects away, but it’s also an invasive species, so be careful when growing it.

In its concentrated form, peppermint is sometimes used as an insect repellent, and its essential oil has been shown to keep away the adults and kill the larvae of several species.

Sage + Rosemary

Catnip This fragrant mint cousin contains a chemical called nepetalactone, which is both a feline attractant and a useful insect repellant.

Basil A 2009 study showed that the essential oil from this delicious herb is toxic to mosquito larvae.

If you’re planning to gather around a fire, try burning a little sage or rosemary. The incense these plants give off when they burn not only smells good but is unpleasant enough to the little critters that it’ll keep them away—as long as you’re near the smoke.

Citrosum

Lavender This beautiful, potent, and lovely-smelling flower not only repels mosquitoes but keeps moths and flies away. The flower’s perfume is wellknown, and while it will scent the air, it’s still most effective when actually rubbed on skin.

This perennial is actually marketed as “mosquito plant,” primarily due to its strong citronella-like smell. Unfortunately, though it’s the most heavily marketed, there’s some research that suggests it’s also the least effective at keeping away mosquitos. Still, there’s some benefits to be had from rubbing it on your skin, and if there’s nothing else around, it will provide some protection.

MODERN MOM

4th of July Crafts BY: MORGAN SIGLER

I hope you will try this or some of the other activities for kids and enjoy some time with your kids this summer.

Recycled Tin Can Windsocks Supplies: Empty and clean tin cans (with tops and bottoms removed) Red Ribbon White Ribbon Twine or string Blue indoor/outdoor paint White indoor/outdoor paint Star stencil Paint brush Glue

1. Start by painting your tin cans

blue. You may need more than one coat in order to get good coverage.

together at the top making a loop at the top from which to hang the windsock.

2. Use your star stencil and white paint to add stars onto your tin cans once the blue paint is fully dry. There is no need to plan things out, just randomly place your stars.

4. Cut the ribbon into strips about 15 inches long. I used a 30 foot roll of each color and that was just enough to cover our four cans.

3. Place a small dab of hot glue inside the can near the top. Place the twine into the glue and repeat this process two more times to form a triangle and tie twine

5. Place a dab of glue inside the bottom of the can and add the ribbon on top. You will want to alternate red and white ribbon to simulate the stripes of the flag.

Hand print American Flag T-Shirts for the family This craft is simple and you can get the whole family involved! Lay each t-shirt on flat surface, I like to wrap mine around cardboard. Apply thick layer of blue paint on left hand and press hand onto shirt (then rush children to the sink immediately to wash their hands). Last step is to paint the red stripes. If you want to get really fancy you could add some glitter or stars!

Are you having a 4th of July party or BBQ? Want a cute and easy way to display silverware, straws, even flowers. I recently started saving all the glass jars from my groceries and man are they coming in handy. You could also use recycled cans as well. Since I’m sure you have left over red, white and blue paint you can decorate them how ever your heart desires. You can add some of the leftover twine from the windsocks for an added pop! SENIOR LIVING

HEATadvisory BY: MELANIE TAWIL

Sun is out, barbecue is getting fired up, and you’re ready to go enjoy the activities with your loved ones. Wait! Before you even think about heading out to your favorite fiesta, the summer time can be a dangerous time for the aging. The best way to enjoy your summer is to take precautions and prepare your body for the activities you have planned.

Stay hydrated Keep a bottle of water with you at all times. Even if you’re not thirsty; it takes the brain 20-30 minutes to realize your body is in severe lack of water. The best way to combat this is to continuously drink water throughout the day. Seniors lose their ability to conserve water as they age. Their bodies are less able to adjust to temperature changes. Keep that water handy and always refuel when needed.

Talk to your doctor Yes, even before anything gets bad. There are precautions that your doctor may want to make as the heat can make your body react interesting to their uses. If you don’t have air conditioning, some medications are less effective at higher temperatures. Keep a list and head on over to your doctor, they can help you right out.

Know who to call Keep a list handy of your emergency contacts and place them in an easy to access area. If something does happen to you while you’re outside, the right people can be called to help quickly.

Wear the right stuff Fashion is key when spending time outdoors. Opt for lighter colored clothes and natural fabrics like cotton. Loose fitting clothes allow for air to hit your skin more efficiently.

Know the risks for hyperthermia This is the downside to overheating and can happen to anyone, regardless of age. Hyperthermia is when your body temperature is abnormally high. If it gets too high, you risk heat stroke. So how would you know if you have hyperthermia? Look for these signs:

Body temperature of more than 104

Keep your cool The previous two are in no way meant to scare you. You can have fun and keep cool in public areas like shopping malls, movie theaters, libraries, and bingo halls; they all offer relief and allow for time out of the house, some including exercise, and socialization.

Change in mood – you become grouchy, agitated, confused. Your skin becomes dry and flushed You experience nausea and vomiting

Communication is key Make sure you let your loved ones and friends know when you’ll be taking some time outside. This will let them know they should check on you if they don’t hear from you for some time. Make sure you contact them and let them know you’re just fine when coming back from your activities. FLAG CHEESE & MEAT TRAY

PATRIOTIC PARTY DIP 2 cans refried beans 1 1/2 - 2 cups guacamole 1 - 1 1/2 cups yogurt mix (4 oz cream cheese + 1 cup plain Greek yogurt + 2-3 Tbsp taco seasoning) 1 cup shredded cheese 1/2 can black olives 2 cups sliced grape or cherry tomatoes

Great for the 4th of July! I used a star shaped cookie cutter to make the star shapes. I found the large flag tray at Party City.

Papa’s Burgers

709 Enrique M Barrera Pkwy TX 78237 (210) 336-7743 papasburgerssatx.com Wow. I was amazed at this place! Once we went it, we were immediately treated like family! As for the burger... It was one of the most delicious burger I have ever had. I usually add condiments to my burger but I was told to taste the burger before adding any sauces. They were 100% right! The burger needed no condiments. The bun was so good as was the flavor of the meat!

P. Terry’s Burger Stand

12018 Research Blvd Austin, TX 78759 (512) 719-4810 pterrys.com

The parties are perfect, the fries, while skinny, are always cooked so good, and the portion is generous (not that this stops me from getting two on occasion). I love that you can order a lettuce wrap here and no one looks at you funny or argues that you can’t have the other things you ordered. I can get a double lettuce wrap burger and fries that actually fills me up for $6.06. Especially in Austin, that is a steal. Kat C. 5.0 star rating 4/2/2019 Yelp Review

Ol Railroad Cafe

1901 Ave G Rosenberg, TX 77471 (832) 595-0995 olrailroadcafe.com

The food here is always amazing!! The open kitchen is wonderful to see the chefs/cooks making the food. The waitstaff is always so polite and fast to acommodate you with whatever your need is. I will always recommend this place to others because the food is fantastic and there is something for even the pickiest of eaters! Also their breakfast and mimosas are to die for, such a great place for brunch! Kailey K A. 5.0 star rating 5/15/2019 Yelp Review
