Rookie Haven Meged wins ProRodeo Tour Finale Courtesy of the PRCA Rookie tie-down roper Haven Meged put an exclamation mark on his first regular season by winning the ProRodeo Tour Finale in Puyallup, Wash., Sept. 8. Coming out on top of the Top 24 tie-down ropers in the ProRodeo Tour Standings showed the rising star is a serious contender for this year’s gold buckle. “The top guys are all here and it’s dirty-tough,” the 21-yearold cowboy said. Before Sunday’s $8,633 win, Meged was second in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $109,613 and about $22,000 shy of claiming the No. 1 spot. The PRCA regular season concludes Sept. 30. “Out there you have to take every calf one by one and not think about the gold buckle and just focus on the task at hand,” the Montana cowboy said. Nine months of competing at the 54 biggest ProRodeo Tour events culminated in the Top 24 cowboys in the ProRodeo Tour Standings competing at the Tour Finale. The first two rounds funneled the competition to the top eight in each event for Sunday afternoon’s semifinals. “Every win counts, but this is one of the bigger rodeos, and it means a lot to win against all these guys,” Meged said. A year of competing came down to four cowboys per event facing off for the firstplace check and the ProRodeo Tour buckle. The rookie roper clocked in at 8.3 seconds in Round 2 and returned to the muddy arena Sunday with an 8.8-second time, followed by an 8.5-second run. “You have to draw good, rope good and ride a good horse – and I’ve got a great horse,” Meged said. Meged wasn’t the only cowboy to hit the Puyallup arena on his horse Beyoncé, as Tyson Durfey also rode her in the first round. “She’s done a lot for me this year,” Meged said. “She’s unbelievable and a once-in-a-lifetime horse.” Meged didn’t get to celebrate for long as he hit the road for the Pendleton (Ore.) Round-Up. “I’m excited to rope on the grass for the first time,” Meged said about the set-up in

Pendleton. “My confidence is huge, and you have to believe in yourself to do well.” From there, Meged is set to compete at the Amarillo (Texas) Tri-State Fair and Rodeo and the 50th Annual Cowboy Capital of the World PRCA Rodeo in Stephenville, Texas, before ending the regular season. “I’m going to the Cana9/16/2019

dian Finals Rodeo (in November), and I’ll get the nerves off there,” Meged said. “Both will be unreal experiences for a rookie.” Meged wasn’t the only rookie to leave Puyallup victorious, as Stetson Wright broke the saddle bronc riding rodeo record of 91 points with a 93.5-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Yesterday’s Delivery. Wright, who missed time recently with a broken jaw, earned $9,707 for the win. Entering the rodeo, Wright was second in the poster and in world standings inOctober bull riding

the top 25 in saddle bronc riding. He also leads the world standings in the all-around. Other winners at the $253,600 rodeo were bareback rider Clayton Biglow (90.5 points on Calgary Stampede’s Zulu Warrior); steer wrestler Hunter Cure (4.0 seconds); team ropers Brenten Hall/Chase Tryan (5.9 seconds); barrel racer Ivy Conrado (14.16 seconds); and bull rider Jordan Hansen (89 points on Bridwell Pro Rodeos’ Catfish Clinger).

Big Al’s View Of The World

For anyone living under a rock and not keeping up with my life, I took a job in Rocksprings inspecting on the pipeline. No you can’t get a loan and yes I am very bored about now. Momma needs a new windshield and I might need to rat hole some money for therapy later in life from all this boredom. This is my sixth week on the job and if ever there was a person over qualified for the watching paint dry job I’m the guy. I’m pretty sure if I applied they would make me the supervisor for the paint drying department. My wife asks me all of the time if I’m ready to come home and I say yes until I get my check on Friday mornings then I’m pretty sure I can push through it one more week. I leave my house at 5:15am each morning and I don’t get home until after 7:30pm each day. I’ve got more windshield time than most panhandle bull haulers although mine is mostly sitting in one spot. Rocksprings and West Texas in general are some of the most beautiful spots in Texas but after six weeks every new pasture just looks like the last one. Not only are hill tops valued for the vistas they are a highly prized possession for their phone reception. If you are fortunate to have your operator park his piece of equipment on a hill top for working you are

R&M Rodeo Photos

at the top of the food chain for a few hours. Catch yourself in a valley and you might as well be in the middle of the ocean because you might have better phone reception in the south Pacific. Yes, I’ve got the big ol’ phone booster on my truck so you won’t have any problem picking me out from a line of trucks on the interstate when I come home on breaks. I’m the pipeliner!!! You don’t know the meaning of “dropping calls” until you sit on the pipeline all day. You can have full bars LTE and still not be able to talk to the person on the other end. You can hear them perfectly fine and they have no idea the cuss words you are hollering at the phone in your hands because they can’t hear you. When the stars, moon, planets, the cell phone towers and the bread twisty you have all line up it is like magic. I can download things on my computer faster in the middle of a pasture than I can at my office with what is supposed to be the fastest internet available. Go figure. If one of those things fall out of alignment, well you’re screwed. You can’t breath, you can’t crank the truck, you can’t even raise your voice too high or you take the chance of losing every bar you had on the phone. My life consists of safety meetings and looking for bars on my phone. In the safety meetings

they stress to prevent slips, trips and falls and to look out for wildlife like snakes and spiders and be careful for loose rocks. This all comes in handy when you are climbing a rock hill looking for better reception. Thank goodness for XM radio. I don’t know what I would do without it because to say this is a “dead zone” as the government calls areas like this is an understatement. My only complaint is that they play the same songs over and over. Kind of just like real radio. I’ve had to resort to the comedy channels for a change of atmosphere. Lucky for me my son just released his first album this week. Now I can listen to him sing over and over. Just like the last six years at the house, but now he has a full band backing him up on the songs and he gets paid every time I listen to it. It might only be 1/100 of a penny but at least he’s making something.. I’m not bragging because he is my son but he’s pretty good. He better be, this pipeline job pays good but not good enough. I’m going to need him to be a star to help me out later. I’ve still got plans I need lots of money to accomplish. I tell my wife she is a stage mom and she says I’m a stage dad. Sometimes it’s hard to tell which one of us is worse although usually it’s her!!!! We don’t go to youth rodeos anymore so we have to do something. You could say sometimes we are worse than a rodeo parent or baseball parent. If you like Texas/Red Dirt music and you want to help out ol’ Big Al’s retirement fund, go listen to Carson Jeffrey anywhere you stream your music.

Just listening to the radio, Big Al’

“You always have someone there to help you get better,” Tanner said. “Having a brother close in age to rodeo with is very beneficial. My brother and I are always trying our best to help each other out.” Sometimes traveling together may come with its ups and downs, but it is all in good fun. “Now traveling together usually led to an argument or two about one another’s driving skills, or navigation skills, and or even sometimes what music to listen to,” Tanner said. “Having your brother there with you in your corner most everywhere you go is great even if it led to an argument or two along the way.”

Those Fleet Boys Tanner & Parker Fleet Keeping it all in the family By Krista Lucas The sport of rodeo can be tough on cowboys and cowgirls physically, as well as mentally. Competitors are always saying how it is vital to have a support system, and it is no different for brothers Parker and Tanner Fleet. The young cowboys grew up together in Axtell, Texas and both caught the rodeo bug at an early age. Their family has been rooted in rodeo for several generations. The Fleet’s uncle, Lawson Plemons, has made the national steer roping finals three times and has won the all around title at Cheyenne Frontier Days, and Parker attributes much of his saddle bronc riding success to his grandpa, Charles Plemons.

“We were raised around rodeo our whole lives, we started roping when we were young, our mom and dad always hauled us to youth rodeos and it just went from there,” Parker said. “I didn’t start riding broncs until half way through my freshman year

and bought me my first bronc saddle.” Tanner competes on the other end of the arena in steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, and has even started steer roping some. Growing up in a rodeo family,

Together, the brothers are quite accomplished rodeo athletes. They have experienced some big wins in the high school and college ranks. Tanner has qualified for the Texas High School Rodeo Association State Finals and placed in a round in the calf roping. He was also on the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association southern region champion men’s team. In high school, Parker won a THSRA state championship his senior year in the saddle bronc and qualified for the National High School Rodeo Association finals during his sophomore, junior and senior years. Parker went on to

Parker is a regular in the United Professional Rodeo Association and Cowboys Professional Rodeo Association where he won the UPRA yearend championship and the CPRA reserve championship in 2018. He is currently ranked fifth in the UPRA saddle bronc standings and third in the CPRA. The hometown rodeos of Teague and Mexia are just a couple of rodeos he always looks forward to. “They are always a blast, and a lot of my family and friends come out to watch,” he said.

is what has kept competing together fun. They have shared countless memories to last a lifetime and have learned a lot from each other too.

“I’m going to continue working and bettering myself in bronc riding, and one day put on a gold buckle,” Parker said.

After college, Tanner became a certified firefighter and emergency medical technician for the Mexia Fire Department. He hopes to move up the ranks there and then maybe one day get his Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association card to rodeo some more. Parker plans to continue to go to PRCA circuit rodeos to try to make the circuit finals and possibly have a chance at the year-end title.

Parker and Tanner will always be involved in the western way of life and hope to carry on that family tradition. Although their paths may go in different directions, they will always be brothers ready to help each other out. Parker will soon be preparing for the CPRA and UPRA finals, and Tanner will be rooting his little brother on and being that support system that is so vital in the sport of rodeo.

the rankest horse out there, but he bucked me down after about five jumps, and I never hit so hard in my life. After that moment, I decided this isn’t for me,” Tanner said. “At the end of the day though, I won the bet, and he had to try steer wrestling.” The good-hearted humor between the brothers

While Parker got hooked on saddle bronc riding thanks to his grandpa, Tanner chose the timed events, noting the rough stock end was just not for him after making a bet with his brother. “I got on one saddle bronc horse one time because Parker and I made a bet that if I got on a bronc he would try steer wrestling. So, one day when we were bucking horses I got on a bronc we called Weldon. He was definitely not

WORLD CHAMPIONS RODEO ALLIANCE REVEALS ONE MILLION DOLLAR TRIPLE CROWN OF RODEO BONUS Win Three Consecutive WCRA Majors – Win $1,000,000

The World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) today announced the most athlete-friendly incentive in the history of rodeo: the WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeoä (TCR). The TCR is an annual bonus that will pay $1,000,000 to any one athlete or collection of athletes whom win first place in any three consecutive WCRA $1,000,000 Major Rodeos. Two of the $1,000,000 WCRA Major Rodeos next year will be coupled with a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) elite series event in a major U.S. market while three TCR events in 2020 will be broadcast on CBS Sports. “We endeavor to lift the entire sport of Rodeo,” said WCRA CEO Gary McKinney. “The WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo is another tremendous advancement for all stakeholders; the athletes, the rodeos and the fans. Historically, outside of the road to the finals, there has been no platform or continuity to align major rodeos – the TCR provides that vehicle.” The current 2020 schedule includes three major rodeos where athletes can qualify for the TCR $1,000,000 bonus, beginning in Kansas City, Missouri for the Royal City Roundup on February 28. The Kansas City event will be followed by the May 17 Stampede at The E in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The 2020 series is scheduled to wrap-up in Tacoma, Washington on August 28 with the Puget Sound Showdown. The Kansas City and Tacoma events will be paired with the 2020 PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Unleash The Beast tour with all WCRA majors airing on CBS Sports. (The full CBS broadcast will be set and released at a later date and is subject to change.) “The three rodeos CBS Sports brought to fans this past summer from Green Bay, Salt Lake City and Calgary, reached more than 3.1 million unique viewers, proving a strong market for major rodeos in mainstream media,” said Sean Gleason, CEO, PBR. “The WCRA Triple Crown of Rodeo is an exciting addition that will bring more drama, news value and fan buzz to major high-payout rodeos.” The TCR bonus will be available to all athletes who nominate their current rodeo efforts through the WCRA Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (VRQ) and are crowned champions at three consecutive WCRA Major Rodeos. This revolutionary annual incentive is not limited to just the

WCRA 2020 season, rather, it allows athletes to rack up wins on a rolling calendar basis. This means athletes’ three consecutive wins can cross calendar years, however, the $1,000,000 bonus will only be paid one time annually. If two or more athletes achieve this milestone at the same time, the bonus will be split. “Our 2020 WCRA Major Rodeo Event Series is already scheduled to pay over $5.1 million,” said WCRA President Bobby Mote. “The TCR is the platform that links this on-going series of events together from a media and public relations standpoint – with athletes in pursuit of the $1,000,000 bo-

Qualifying for the Royal City Roundup is currently underway and athletes can continue nominating until December 1. All rodeo athletes interested in learning more about the VRQ should be directed to wcrarodeo.com while those inquiring more about the TCR may visit triplecrownofrodeo.com. Fans will be able to witness the first Triple Crown of Rodeo stop

at the Royal City Roundup at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri February 28. Tickets for the one-day $1,000,000 major rodeo go on sale Monday, Nov. 4 at 10 a.m. CT and start at $10. All tickets for the event can be purchased at the Sprint Center Box Office or by visiting sprintcenter. com. Since launching in May of 2018, the WCRA and its partners have awarded more than $5,600,000 in new money to rodeo athletes. All rodeo athletes interested in learning more about the WCRA or the VRQ should be directed to wcrarodeo.com.

Breaking It Down With Speed Williams The struggles of heeling Growing up I heeled all the time. I went to the National Finals heeling when at 20 and decided there was more room for improvement on the heading end. I felt like I could do some things that headers weren’t doing. I really enjoyed the change of being in control. One day maybe my son will become a header, but right now he doesn’t like it and only heads in the practice pen when we have clients who heel and I need him to head. Gabe has come a long way in his heeling. This December will be two years since he decided he wanted to rope. He’s always roped with me a little, maybe ten or fifteen minutes, and then he was gone. I’ve never pushed him to rope, but I have bribed him into roping. That’s no longer the case. He wants to rope nonstop and always asks for one more pen; not one more steer, but one more pen. He’s twelve years old and has a #5 heel card. He’s entered at the USTRC Finals in the #12 through the #9. Some days in the practice pen he ropes really good. Same steers, same horses. The next day he may miss the majority of his steers. We talk about it

all the time. There are steps you must go through heeling. If any steps are eliminated, there’s a good chance your run won’t be as successful as you would like. Heeling is a math equation that changes every time the gate opens. There are so many variables: your partner, the number roping you’re in, the head horse you’re behind, and how fast you need to catch the cow based on your projection of what it will take to place in the roping. We set up scenarios in the practice pen all the time. For instance, with his partner for the junior rodeos they need to be under 11-seconds to win the roping. There are different ways to approach the cow if you have 11 seconds to get a qualified run. Factors are your position as you ride down the arena, the width between you and the steer, and how early you turn in. It allows more leniency if the steer happens to check off so you won’t get on top of him and are forced to throw. Now, if you have to be 7-seconds, you need to ride tighter and narrow the width between you and the steer going down the arena. Depending on where the header turns, you have to put yourself in a position to heel in the

first couple of jumps. That is where we are currently and are struggling with position and riding the corner. I have had him on horses where he doesn’t have to use the reins much. So, lately I’ve had him ride some horses where he has to use his left hand to control the position. This is where and why some heelers can have a bad day… when they start rushing the corner. It causes a lot of problems when you’re on top of the cow before he’s turned. When you’re so close to the cow that your horse’s head is in the wrong position and blocking your view, it’s very difficult to heel him. Recently I was helping a #7+ heeler that was struggling. We ran through various scenarios in the arena and then went inside and watched the video. His swing, angle, and delivery were outstanding. However, his horse was in the wrong position in the corner and running too tight. When he turned in, his horses’ head was turned to the right and blocking his view. I got on his horse and roped the Hot Heels a few times. Then on the very first steer, I gave the horse a pocket and let him come in with his nose to the inside. It makes a world of difference in how fast you can rope when you can see the cow. Often when heelers are struggling, it’s not their roping but their position and the angle of their position. When you’re in correct position, the cows are much easier to heel. When you’re in the wrong position, you have to use

your rope handling ability to overcome obstacles. Heeling is a frustrating and humbling thing and if you do not have the opportunity to practice a couple of times a week, it’s very hard to stay sharp, unlike heading. With heading you can rope the dummy, keep your horse legged up and be competitive. Heeling is a reaction to an action and there are so many things happening often you don’t have time to think. But, it sure is a lot of fun when you come around and rope one nice. Kind of like in golf when you hit your ball a long way with your driver… your confidence is high and you just want to do it again. What’s new with me: We have moved into our new place in Comanche and are operational. We have our arena up and are teaching lessons. I’m excited with the response from customers who are using the Speed Trainer and seeing the benefits in their roping and riding. I’m also happy to announce that Priefert has built us a new goat dummy, the Goat Trainer, that will help teach kids to get off their horses correctly. Stepping off is the dangerous part of goat tying. The Goat Trainer is much like the Speed Trainer where it lights up if you pull too hard on the reins. It also helps teach how to guide your horse when you’re riding the stirrup and getting ready to dismount. For ordering or more information about the Speed Trainer or Goat Trainer call Colter Buck at 903-434-8970.

Developed by 8-Time Consecutive World Champion Team Roper, Speed Williams

The Speed Trainer can help you: • Improve balance and horsemanship • Learn to rope quicker • Dally better • Isolate and correct mistakes • Work with your horse for smoother and quicker runs

For more information, or to see the Speed Trainer in action visit speedroping.com.

WORLD CHAMPIONS RODEO ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES NUMBER ONE ATHLETE ON LEADERBOARD ADVANCES DIRECTLY TO ONE MILLION DOLLAR MAJOR RODEO Additional Incentive Provides Direct Benefit To All Rodeo Athletes

AUSTIN, TEXASThe World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) announced today that the number one athlete on the WCRA Leaderboard in each discipline from each segment will automatically advance to WCRA One-Day $1,000,000 Major Rodeos. This incentive will take effect immediately, giving the top athlete in segment four direct advancement to the first one-day $1,050,000 WCRA Major Rodeo of 2020. The event will be hosted on February 28 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri - The WCRA Royal City Round Up. Athletes from around the globe have the chance to earn the number one spot on the leaderboard when nominating their efforts through the WCRA Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (VRQ) until December 1 at 11:59 p.m. CT “Historically we have rewarded those in the upper portion of the leaderboard going into a semi-finals with placement into the later rounds,” said WCRA President Bobby Mote. “Feedback from athletes has helped us offer this new ultimate incentive if you are ranked number one. Athletes can now advance directly to the major, regardless of your performance at the Semi-Finals. We believe this will reward top athletes whom earn points through successful competition and participation in the VRQ.” Mote also stated that athletes who place first on the leaderboard may still choose to compete in the semi-finals for additional earnings. Along with this new number one incentive for VRQ Users, there are additional incentives related to leaderboard positions at the

I n addition, the WCRA Royal City Roundup will feature an extra $50,000 in the TieDown roping discipline due to no qualified times in the Show-

down Round at the June WCRA Titletown Stampede in Green Bay. This prize money will carry forward to make it a $100,000 payday for the WCRA Royal City Roundup Tie-Down Champion, with a qualifying run. All other disciplines will compete for $111,000 per, with the champions opportunity to earn $50,000 in each discipline. Since launching in May of 2018, the WCRA and its partners have awarded more than $5,600,000 in new money to rodeo athletes.

“Signs of the times” From Pastor Randy Weaver “So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him.” (Matthew 24:44) Throughout history, people have continually speculated about the second coming of Christ. If this topic is of no interest to you, this article may be the most important article you will ever read. In Matthew 24, Jesus gives us some of the most valuable information about the signs of His return. Many believe that Christ’s return has been delayed and that perhaps it is a fairy tale that will never happen. I would like to remind you that God’s calendar is a much different calendar from the one we live with today. The Scripture says in Psalms 90:4, “for a thousand years in your signs are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” In the light of eternity, since the day that Christ walked on the face of this earth, it has really only been (according to God’s calendar) a couple of days. The Scripture says that our life on earth is like a vapor. If you have ever made coffee from an old steam kettle, you will understand that a vapor disappears quite suddenly. In Matthew 24:6, Jesus speaks of wars, rumors of wars, nation rising against nation, kingdom against kingdom, famines and earthquakes in different places. It also says that these are only the beginnings of “birth pains”. There are seven signs that are given in this 24th chapter of Matthew. As much as we drive, one thing that we understand is a road sign. There are stop signs and yield signs. Driving through Colorado you will find cautionary signs that warn of falling rocks. The Scripture says that many will be deceived in

the last days. We have witnessed an extreme amount of deception in the past few years and have been convinced that compromise is OK. Whenever we buy into the deception that we can allow other things to take the place of our relationship with our Creator, we have bought into the deception of the last days. Years ago, I got on an airplane to go to a rodeo in Fresno, California. At that time, I had not flown very much at all. The plane had a layover in Salt Lake City, Utah. Because I was not paying attention to the signs, either printed on my ticket or in the terminal, I did not realize that I should have changed to a different plane to go through San Francisco to Fresno. I wound up at the Orange County airport in southern California. When I finally realized what I had done, the ticket agent told me there was a flight leaving from LAX and that I might make it to the rodeo on time – or I might not! The only way that I could get to LAX was on a bus. What she didn’t tell me was the bus toured Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm on the way. Needless to say, I didn’t win anything when I finally arrived at the rodeo in Fresno.

Even though we do not know the exact date and time, this is an event that will supersede all events. May I say to you two words that in my estimation are two of the most important words in the Bible? Those two words are for your benefit. Those words are “BE READY”!
