Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide
Are you knee deep in all things school related? Fundraising? Gearing up for the holidays and trying to keep up with your small group bible study, your work out of the day, and dinner? I can relate. How in the world does a parent do it all? The answer - he/ she doesn’t. You must make choices. You prioritize based on value, how much time the activity requires out of your week, the time of an event, the cost of it, and how much energy it requires from you. You can’t do it all, so don’t overcommit and don’t feel guilty about saying no. Choose the right things to say YES to.

Psalm 74:17
It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth;
Making Mountains out of Mole Hills by Mehgan Drake To the outside world, having a child with special needs looks extremely hard
and out of the ordinary. But to those of us living in that realm, it is our normal. It can be hard, yes, but hard is just normal for some. We go about our lives, in our own routine, celebrating small victories—that are actually huge—and don’t tend to dwell on the “what-ifs” or “might-have-beens”. I will admit however, there are fleeting moments when I see others’ normal, and I can’t help but mourn for what society at large routinely gets to experience with their more typical kids. My son is eighteen years old. He has Down syndrome and low-functioning institutional autism, among other various diagnoses. We adopted him when he was twelve, and prior to that, he lived severely neglected and forgotten in a rural mental institution overseas. I will spare you the horror of his previous life. We didn’t have the chance to

enroll him in early intervention to support his needs as a small child. So now he is 18, a grown man really, but will always be around eighteen months old cognitively. The celebrations of being able to vote, decide if he wants tattoos, make the (poor) choice to smoke, or attend college are all lost to him. We have missed him getting a first kiss, getting a drivers’ license, and taking the SAT.
He will never introduce us to his fiancé, and we will never rejoice with him as he holds his first child. So we celebrate the small things, because in our world they are giant. We make mountains out of mole hills. My son learned to walk when he was nearly thirteen. Imagine depending on someone to move you around your whole life, and all of a sudden being able to

go where you want, when you want!our boy doesn’t talk but he has learned valuable communication skills in the form of eye contact, sign and body language, and let me tell you, at times he is downright bossy! We have recently also rejoiced in the fact that he can now dress and feed himself. If you are special needs mama, shout your victories from the rooftop so your friends and tribe can holler with you. If you are that friend, be interested in the small stuff, even if it doesn’t feel like a big deal—I promise, it is. And let us be glad with you as well when you hit monumental milestones. While it may give us a momentary small pang of sadness, we will cheer with you, too. It doesn’t matter our kids’ abilities, we are always proud of them. We can all love and support each other. My
