A special place There are many reasons that Gillespie County always seems to be on lists of favorite places to live or visit. Although steeped in German culture, our community has become an eclectic mix Stroeher of nationalities and personalities that have enhanced the richness of what this area has to offer. With our growing farmers’ market, ecofriendly movement, award-winning wine industry, educational and recreational opportunities, variety of retail stores, abundance of churches, arts and crafts, fine arts, live music and theatre, festivals held year-round, and scenic beauty from every road during every season in the county, you will begin to experience the “tip of the iceberg” of what Gillespie County has to offer. Additionally, our wonderful schools, award-winning hospital, first-class airport and top-notch emergency response personnel help make Gillespie County a community that is envied by many. Being a desired end-destination, whether to live in or visit, and through good stewardship, we have been blessed with a stable economy and growth even in the difficult times our nation has experienced the last few years. My hope and belief is that we will keep the momentum going so that Gillespie County will continue to be a “special place” for people to live and raise their families for many generations to come. So, Willkommen! Stay and enjoy all that Gillespie County has to offer. Mark Stroeher Gillespie County Judge City Source Book

Welcome to the community Is Fredericksburg your new home? Welcome! I am the Hospitality Hostess and I’d like to extend a warm welcome as well as present a complimentary bag of Schandua goodies on behalf of over 50 businesses in town. People are genuinely surprised with the amount of things included — maps, gift certificates, free products, discounts, information on health care, veterinarians, churches, local clubs and groups, financial information and a variety of other services. I am happy to distribute this helpful information and it is my pleasure to answer any additional questions.

My position as the Hospitality Hostess was started by Virginia Prehn in the early 1960s. When Mrs. Prehn moved away in 1971, she asked her friend, LaVerne Ottmers, to carry it on. Mrs. Ottmers welcomed newcomers to Fredericksburg for 40 years. I took over in October 2010 and it has been a perfect fit. The two questions I am most commonly asked are, “Who are you with?” and “How did you get my information?” These are not surprising questions, since being personally welcomed to a new community is very uncommon. My answers are that I am the Hospitality Hostess and although I am not employed by the City of Fredericksburg or the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce, I do have a business relationship with both organiza-

Gillespie County Gillespie County’s 1,061 square miles lies at the heart of the Lone Star State’s 254-county body. Visible on a Texas map because of its straight lines and near-perfect rectangular shape, the county serves as home to just under 25,000 residents, with many of those concentrated in and just outside of the county seat of Fredericksburg.

County facilities County services are provided through the Gillespie County Courthouse in the heart of downtown Fredericksburg at 101 West Main Street. Situated on “Courthouse Square,” the courthouse is joined there by Pioneer Memorial Library, and the Gillespie County Annex 1 building (located in the former

U.S. Post Office.) Annex 1 features the driver’s license office, the justices of the peace offices, the county attorney’s office, community service department and the hot check department. Gillespie County Annex 2, another auxiliary building, is located across the street from the courthouse in the 100 block of

Gillespie Central Appraisal District Located in the basement of the Gillespie County Courthouse, the Gillespie Central Appraisal District (GCAD) determiens values on every piece of real estate in the county. In most years each May, property owners will receive in the mail the appraised values of their properties. They then have 30 days in which to ďŹ le a formal protest if they disagree with the numbers. The appraisal district ofďŹ ce welcomes taxpayers to visit them for discussions about any property values they may ďŹ nd questionable. Oftentimes, having a quick visit offers both the appraisers and the property owners some insight into the situation. Because of that open line of communication, resolutions often occur at that point. In July 2015, GCAD began collection of property taxes, taking over from the Gillespie County Tax Assessor-Collector’s OfďŹ ce. Currently, GCAD is looking for a permanent location.
