FROM THE PUBLISHER While the Hill Country wine corridor is a popular tourist destination, what has fast become another draw is our art district which boasts 17 galleries. The overwhelming success of the 2015 Fredericksburg Art Auction proves this point. The sale grossed $6 million in its first year and the 2016 sale is shaping up to be a bigger event. In short, this is a great place to be an artist or to experience art. From the First Friday Art Walk, to soaking in art at a winery visit, to visiting individual galleries with their own style and collections, art will add much to your visit. Welome, and enjoy. Ken Esten Cooke

Our cover artist is Chuck Mauldin, a local whose oil “Everything Texas” captures the Hill Country’s spring colors and textures. Mauldin and his wife Barbara are both accomplished artists. He is represented locally by Fredericksburg Art Gallery.

Experience RS “Shannon” Hanna's passion for art, contagiously sharing that passion with others. Shannon has been connecting exceptional art and collectors since 1998 in Fredericksburg for Whistlepik Gallery for 11 years, then founding InSight Gallery with her sister in 2009 to national article fanfare. The next year creative differences caused her to move on, resulting in opening RS Hanna Gallery in 2011. Her philosophy is to hold open a place for sharing life’s beauty with others, bringing “artist’s artists” and art lovers together. Thirty recognized artists from 14 states, Scotland and Canada have found a home with her. An emphasis on new, fine quality work of highly collectible artists, together with her thoughtful and attentive style to both artists and collectors alike, has marked her success with her new gallery. “My goal is to promote our artists and help build thoughtful collections of art…. I especially love it when people come in and really spend time with the artwork, look at it and talk about it. I hope that visitors to the gallery will be reminded of the universal notion that we are all connected and that through seeking out beauty and art we learn about ourselves and our everlasting relationship with nature and each other. Keeping tradition alive Modern-day artists continue to be inspired by Hill Country landscape Lungkwitz

Petri

By Barbara Boothe Loyd The beauty of the Texas Hill Country has been captured by artists dating back to the 1800s when early pioneers Herman Lungkwitz and Richard Petri settled in the area. They bought 320 acres of land on the Pedernales River about five miles southwest of Fredericksburg on what is now known as the “Old Kerrville Road” and proceeded to build their homes and farm the land. These two artists devoted much of their time to painting the Texas landscape as they saw it, leaving for today many pictures

of scenes, buildings, frontier life, even Indians, which are found in private collections and museums. Their sketches and paintings have become prized as rare interpretations of an era. Modern day artists continue this artistic tradition in the welcoming arts district with its blend of Hill Country German farm culture and Texas brio. Over a dozen galleries represents hundreds of artists from Texas and around the world.

John Austin

HANNA By Barbara Boothe Loyd

J

ohn Austin Hanna grew up in Beaumont, Texas. His father was a Baptist preacher, professional wrestler, and owned a single-truck hauling business. John credits his mother for starting him on his artistic journey. Throughout his elementary school days she provided his art materials and entered his artwork in local shows. She provided summer art camp for her talented son during his school vacations. These weeks of art camp were not announced in advance;

John was told to get dressed after breakfast because she was taking him to “something fun.” As a boy he painted with oils his mother supplied, applying them to pre-stretched canvas and board. Having worked with various media during his career, John works in oils today. He finds them “one of the most forgiving mediums.” His mother’s Art Diploma from North Light was among items John discovered when she passed away last year. He found notes she wrote about what she learned plus lists of art supplies she bought.
