his region of the Lone Star State has been experiencing a population boom in recent years– partly because it has the Highland Lakes that are so admired by both new residents as well as long-timers and also because there is much to offer in this part of the Texas Hill Country overall. There’s no “down time” in the region. Every season brings a variety of activities, some of which revolve around the region’s five lakes—Buchanan, Inks,
Marble Falls, LBJ and Travis. Folks can be seen fishing (or just boating), kayaking, hiking and cycling year-round. The summer months are

especially busy for the region. In June is the Marble Falls Soapbox Classic (for grown-ups with a need for speed and creativity); July brings the Marble Falls Rodeo and a triathlon in the city. The LakeFest Drag Boat races and Fall Creek Vineyards’ Grape
Stomp festival are big draws in August. Falling leaves bring Market Days and Sculpture on Main in Marble Falls. Don’t forget the Citywide Garage Sale in Marble Falls and the Texas Fall Fest & Wine Auction in Horseshoe Bay. When folks feel the (slight) chill of a Texas winter, get ready for the Christmas Light-up Parade that precedes the Walkway of Lights, where 2 million bulbs illuminate Lake Marble Falls. The Texas High School Bass Fishing Championship takes over Lake LBJ in spring. April is time for artists to Paint the Town. The CASI Regional Chili Championship, Mayfest and Market Days consume May.

FOR A WEEKEND ... OR A LIFETIME
arble Falls is a lakeside community that draws visitors and new residents with its small town atmosphere and big city entrepreneurialism.
It boasts of boating and fishing, golf on area links and much more for young families, retirees and those simply looking to live a life with Hill Country flair. Nestled on the banks of the Colorado River and named for the waterfall that once rushed over

700 First Street Marble Falls at the 281 Bridge & Lake Marble Falls
The modern Marble Falls Library offers a counterpoint to the historic row. Beyond downtown, the city offers major chain grocers, stores and restaurants. Specialty restaurants that run the gamut of nationalities and ambiance and nightspots for live music are found everywhere. Still, many are drawn to the historic Blue Bonnet Café with down-home cooking and the famous “pie happy hour.” Founded in 1887 by Adam Rankin Johnson, a former Comanche fighter and Confederate general, Marble Falls grew quickly with the construction of a rail yard to transport the unique Sunset Red pink granite from nearby Granite Mountain. The stone was even used to construct the Texas Capitol building, among others in Austin and for Gulf Coast jetties. With the completion of Max Starcke Dam and creation
of Lake Marble Falls in 1951, the falls the city was named for were submerged and the city’s economy emerged, evolving from industrial-based granite mining to tourism, commerce and leisure. City limits have been extended south all the way to Texas 71 to provide utilities
to the new Baylor Scott & White Wayne & Eileen Hurt Regional Medical Center. The rugged beauty of the Hill Country as it meets the lakes and rivers continues to inspire artists, authors, musicians and artisans, so a multitude of art galleries
and live music venues serve a cultured community. Paint the Town is a spring festival in which plein air artists compete to capture its scenes. And, every year, noted artists place sculptures throughout the downtown area for a 12-month art exhibit--Sculpture on Main.

Due to the “constant level” status of Lake Marble Falls, residents and visitors have endless opportunity for water sports, swimming, fishing, bird watching, hiking, boating and camping year-round. Other area attractions include wineries, horseback riding, museums, several city parks including a brand new city dog park, and golf courses. The city’s skate park, designed by a local sculptor, and the disc golf course are especially popular with teens. Other park facilities include sports fields, tennis courts, a municipal pool and access to Lake Marble Falls and Backbone Creek. The Marble Falls/Lake LBJ Chamber of Commerce that occupies a new Visitor Center home at the intersection of Second Street and US 281 supports several annual events, including the free MayFest carnival and concert, LakeFest drag boat races in August

However, nearby Faith Academy (grades K-12), Harmony School of Creative Art, fitness gyms and physical education resources add to that picture. Lakes, championship golf courses, fabulous vistas, outdoor activities, good food and wine, first-class medical and health care facilities and great Texas music combine for some of Burnet County’s best points of interest for those visiting, as well as those making a new home here. It’s one of those places that sells itself with its abundance of tourism, pleasant and affordable retirement living and appealing recreation options. It continues to grow and change at a rapid pace. While agriculture and a rural lifestyle still largely define the culture here, more and more, commuters, retirees, lake
enthusiasts and others who want to escape from big-city living for a weekend or a lifetime are coming to this part of the Texas Hill Country. “We have more couples and young people moving here,” said Burnet County Judge Donna Klaeger, who announced her retirement from the post in 2013. “We’ve become a bedroom community for people who work in Austin, Georgetown or Round Rock. We have more people who are executives who have second homes here, and because of advanced technology are able to do more of their work here, even though their jobs are in Dallas or Houston or some other big city,” Klaeger said.

While the ghosts of communities like Oatmeal, Joppa, Lake Victor and Fairland loom on winding roads, other small towns in the county like Bertram, Granite Shoals and Cottonwood Shores are starting to prosper. The county’s two population centers are Marble Falls, the retail hub, and Burnet, the county seat. Both have experienced exceptional growth in the past decade. On the southern end of the county a new Baylor
Scott & White hospital is under construction and should be complete by late 2015, giving Burnet County multiple medical centers in its two major cities. A variety of factors make continued growth inevitable. Although granite and other bedrock underlie much of the county, some of the state’s finest vineyards have sprung from its soil while challenging golf courses have been coaxed from arid locations elsewhere, notably in affluent Horseshoe Bay.

The Marble Falls Public Library received a facelift in 2013 and reopened with new technology to better serve patrons.
Books in every genre of fiction and non-fiction, music CDs, movies, audio books and periodicals still occupy the shelves, but online catalogs take patrons through collections for most of those libraries online. Cooperative programs open the world of e-books, audio books and digital periodicals through the Internet. Computer access is available at the libraries even if residents do not have their
own. Libraries are centers for programs that educate and public meetings. All of them focus special programs on children and youth and offer education and special services for adults. Each one is buoyed by active Friends organizations that provide a great way to become involved in a local community. Almost every one offers book sales and some

operate thrift stores. In Burnet, the Herman Brown Free Library is located at the corner of East Washington and South Main streets on the courthouse square. It was established Jan. 9, 1949, in a temporary home in what is now the historic Burnet County Jail, while a permanent library was built next door. Modern demands pushed the facility onto the square and expanded a six-hour week into five and sometimes six full days. It serves as the repository for the materials of the Burnet County Genealogical Society. Genealogy and Texas history assistance from librarians is augmented by community organizations that also provide such services as income tax assistance each spring. The meeting room upstairs bustles with programs. For more information on the library or its events, call 512-

Until the new Bertram library opened its doors, the Marble Falls Public Library was the newest in the Burnet County System, and it remains the largest. It has grown from a town library, established in 1948 in the back of a business of the era, Boxell & Hartzell’s Department Store. It traveled from the Barnes Lumber Company (now Old Oak Square) in 1951 to the Masonic Lodge (Second Street at US 281) in 1953 to a modern 4,500 square-foot home that now houses the Marble Falls Economic Development Corporation at 801 Fourth Street 1974. The current home at 101 Main Street opened in September of 1997. The Marble Falls Library is host to many club meetings and special events. For more

Bertram’s first library began in the early 1930’s and was housed upstairs at the Sullivan Store, later upstairs at what is now the Lewis Building and on to another storefront in the 1950’s. In December 2003, Friends of the Bertram Library purchased land on the corner of Texas 29 and North Gabriel Street and, after they received a two million dollar grant for a state-of-theart library from Roy F. and Joann Cole Mitte Foundation, the new Joann Cole Mitte Memorial Library was completed at 170 North Gabriel Street in November of 2010. The children’s programs at the Joann Cole Mitte Library are said to be the most attended in the county system and they have plenty for adults as well. For more information, call 512-355-3323.
Last but not least in the Burnet County Library System, the Okalla Public Library serves an unincorporated community. On a more limited schedule it offers book and audiovisual material, inter-library loan, reference assistance, public access to computers and, as its larger counterparts, home schooling support. Established in the 1920s this facility is also home of the Oakalla Community Center, 29011 Farm to Market Road 963, which makes for a great area for children’s activities, as well as adult activities. T
he wine-producing areas of California have Lone Star competition these days. Texas Hill Country vineyards–including some in the Highland Lakes–are gaining notoriety and acclaim. Whether you’re in the mood for an earthy Mourvedre, a bold Cabernet, a spicy Syrah or a crisp, easy-drinking Viognier, you will find unique wines fermented with Texas grapes grown in spicy, peppery soil at a fraction of the cost of similar vintages in California and the Pacific Northwest. Grapes grow well in the Texas High Plains and the Hill
Country, where the temperature and moisture is said to be similar to that of France, Spain and Italy, where many of the world’s most expensive and sought-after varietals are produced. As the awards keep pouring in, and glasses will keep filling up. If beer is your thing, you’re in luck. Beer is produced locally

Lake Marble Falls is one of the best lakes for largemouth bass along with LBJ. The grasses in the lake have made for some obstacles for boaters. Catching the fish early in the day is also recommended. When the sun comes out the fish head for deeper waters. The fishing is great here. T
he Highland Lakes offer a great diversity of houses of worship. This includes all major Protestant denominations, Catholic, a Torah study group and even a Buddhist temple.
Many of them, beyond regular worship services, offer a variety of special programs and activities for youth, for choirs and religious music, community events and more. from the top of the Highland Lakes, Burnet continues to attrract people who want the convenience of nearby Austin without its accompanying hassle. Burnet remains the kind of Texas town where you can still drop by the local newspaper to show off the fish you caught and replay Friday night’s high school football game with someone you meet on the sidewalk downtown. Its people are friendly and they’re proud of their town, which began life in 1849 as Hamilton Valley, just across the creek from an Army outpost. Today, Fort Croghan is preserved as a museum with several restored buildings and annual re-enactments of frontier life. Just to the east, business is still done in buildings that have occupied the Burnet County Courthouse square for more than a century. Guests sleep at a bed and breakfast once a stage stop, and restored steam engines
chug into the train depot each weekend. Excellent public schools and a 25-bed Seton Highland Lakes Hospital are among outstanding community facilities, which also include a public golf course and the YMCA recreation center offering everything from games and swimming to fitness programs. Its airport serves private aviators and is the base for the Highland Lakes Squadron of the Commemorative Air Force, whose vintage air show is one of the year’s big events along with the Bluebonnet Festival in the spring and the fair and rodeo. Although the Austin metropolis is creeping nearer, optimists believe it won’t disturb Burnet’s small town values centered on family life, schools, church and civic activities. By the way, it’s pronounced BURN-it, not Burr-NET!

Burnet County History & Landmarks
B
urnet County traces its recorded history back to the frontier days after Texas was annexed to the United States in the 1840s and the federal government became responsible for the protection of settlers from Native American raids. Several companies of Texas Rangers were stationed along the frontier and in December of 1847 a company commanded by Henry E. McCulloch established what became known as McCulloch’s Station, later to be named Fort Croghan, the third of four frontier forts established in the region and was named
for Col. George Croghan who was a hero at the battle of Fort Stephenson in the War of 1812. The area along with a creek flowing through the area was commonly called Hamilton or Hamilton Valley for John Hamilton, who had a large plot of land there. The town was founded

as Hamilton in 1852, when Burnet County was established. The name of the county is pronounced with the emphasis or accent on the first syllable. Because another town North of Lampasas was named Hamilton, the new settlement was renamed in 1858 for David Gouverneur Burnet, the first provisional president of the Republic of Texas. Marble Falls was named for its natural falls situated in the Colorado River, relegated to an underwater existence when submerged by Lake Marble Falls when Max Starke Dam was built in 1951. Marble Falls was founded in 1887 by Adam Rankin Johnson, a former Indian fighter and Confederate general. By 1860 Burnet County had 2,487 residents. Although the archeology of Burnet County has not
been fully studied, several prehistoric campsites have been found along the rivers and their tributaries. The hunting and gathering peoples who had established themselves in the area by about 4500 B.C. were probably ancestors of the Tonkawa Indians. No evidence of Spanish exploration or settlement has been found in Burnet County, although missions were established in the 1740s and 1750s in neighboring San Saba County. In the early nineteenth century, surveyors found the local Tonkawa and Lipan Apache groups to be friendly, but the Comanche’s made frequent raids into the area. The county’s unique geologic formations are central to two of its most popular landmarks. Longhorn Cavern State Park, south of Burnet just off
Park Road 4, contains awesome formations formed centuries ago when water ground levels began to drop, dissolving solid limestone and cutting great underground stream beds from the rock. It is this unusual combination of dissolving and cutting that makes Longhorn Cavern one of the most unique caves of the world. The cave has been used as a shelter since prehistoric times and among legends is one that the outlaw Sam Bass hid a $2 million cache of stolen money inside. (Of course, it’s never been found.) Confederates made gunpowder in the cave during the Civil War. Legend says also that Texas Rangers recued a kidnapped girl from the Native Americans there. Two miles south of Marble Falls on County Road 401 is Dead Man’s Hole, a deep well-like fissure cloaked in
controversy and infamy. The 15-story sinkhole got its name in the 1860’s, when rumors spread that Confederate fanatics had murdered Union sympathizers, and dumped their bodies into the hole’s black maw. Today, Dead Man’s Hole is listed as a State Historical Site. Seven feet wide at the lip, the sinkhole gradually flares to a width of 50 feet at the bottom. There are also more than 70 Historical Markers in Burnet County ranging from the Airy Mount Barn, located one mile east of Burnet to the graves of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Wolf, located in the Dobyville cemetery. Menaced by Native American raids and aware of need for government, Wolf in 1854 helped organize Burnet County. Of their eight children, two sons became sheriffs; one in Burnet and one in Lampasas County.

Labeled the “Deer Capital of Texas,” Llano, at the crossroads of Texas highways 71, 29 and 16, offers gracious living, historic features and tasty meals for hunters from some of the best hunting places in the state. It is home to a number of historical and recreation areas. The newest, the Llano Events Center on Ranch to Market Road 152, was completed in April 2012 for events such as rodeos, horse and cattle events, trade shows and concerts. The city was established in February 1856 along the Llano River, which runs right through the city limits. On the north side of the river is the city’s historical district, including the Llano County Historical Museum, the Llano Depot and Railyard Museum that houses the Llano Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center and unique shops and antique stores. Some of the best barbecue
in Texas can be found here, in the opinion of a pack of restaurant reviewers and diners that actually fly in to Llano Municipal Airport just for the savory fare. Llano’s historic downtown on the south side of the Llano River is filled with unique stores and a historic restored movie theater, the LanTex. The Llano County Courthouse, as many of the structures around the square, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The nearby historic Llano Red Top Jail is preparing to reopen for tours after recent approval of finances for required structural repair. The Southern Hotel and the Badu House also are on that list. Llano boasts scenic green space along the river including Badu Park, Grenwelge Park and Robinson Park. The city maintains an 18-hole public golf course and an RV park. Huge festivals throughout

the year include the Crawfish Open, the Chuck Wagon Cook-Off, the Llano Earth Art Fest, Wild West Weekend, Llano Rock’n River Fest and Llano’s Blue Bell Bluegrass Festival. Llano hosts a pro rodeo and many roping events. Rich in tradition, these events and the city’s historic features helped Llano receive international recognition from True West Magazine as one of the Top 10 Western Towns in America. Hundreds of hunters are welcomed each deer season at a special event in their
honor. Fishing for bass, catfish and sunfish as well as panning for gold in the Llano River are popular pastimes among residents and visitors. The city offers public safety, water, sewer and electrical service. The Llano County Library, beyond a collection of books, media and access to Internet resources, is a center for public meetings and educational programs. Llano Memorial Hospital has served the town since the 1950’s and a senior citizen center, three nursing homes and an assisted living facility are found there.

sign outside the county courthouse in Llano reads, “Llano County, the way Texas used to be.” That is a visual truth of the historic county where most of downtown is listed on the register of Texas landmarks and in the unchanging landscape of remaining ranchland. It is clear, too, in a lifestyle and outlook that survives despite immersion in 21st Century technology. This is the heart of the Texas Hill Country — a place drawn from limestone boulders, gnarled mesquites, majestic

live oaks, low hills sweeping evermore into purple haze and brilliant sunsets that give way to true dark skies. Meandering
creeks and rivers and sparkling lakes comprise 32 square miles of open water. Homes of all shapes, descriptions and prices can be found, from multimilliondollar estates to Victorian dwellings and rough old ranch houses. Many of those ranches today raise more deer than cattle. Hunters take more whitetail deer in the county than anywhere in Texas. Some are just hideaways for owners to relax and wend a way on horseback or pick-up truck through a part of the state right out of a western movie. Packsaddle Mountain, which rises about 650 feet above Texas 71, was the site of the last major Indian battle in the area and figures in tales of abandoned Spanish mines and buried treasure. Not long ago, the head of a consulting firm specializing in retirement lifestyles announced, “The Hill Country has joined
the (nation’s) upper tier of retirement destinations.” Forbes. com named Llano County a top realty destination for the wealthy. That focus may be drawn largely from Horseshoe Bay, a town that began and remains the result of exacting and exclusive development of amenities and recreational golf and water sport facilities on Lake LBJ. But, a major growth driver for
Llano County is a desire to trade city living for a bucolic lifestyle – even if only for a weekend getaway. That is true for the three incorporated towns—Llano, Horseshoe Bay and Sunrise Beach Village—and for the sprawling communities of Kingsland, Buchanan Dam, Bluffton and Tow with its Fall Creek Vineyards. The Llano River flows past the old German settlement of Castell before bisecting the county seat of
Llano. And all along it are happy escapes. The county sheriff’s department doubles as police force for unincorporated communities. County government maintains a modern library system, a park and public boat ramp. More than 570 miles of county roads carry travelers around east and west sides of Lake Buchanan and Inks Lake, to the north and south shores of Lake LBJ and outward to seven surrounding counties. A healthcare system that began with Llano Memorial Hospital in the 1950’s extended into three other counties before the Llano County Hospital Authority forged a partnership with Baylor Scott & White. That resulted in regional cooperation for a new 46-bed facility, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center, just across the Burnet County line and annexed by the City of Marble Falls for utility service.
