A Letter to Our Readers Mama always told me not to look into the eyes of the sun But mama, that’s where the fun is – Bruce Springsteen, Blinded by the Light Fun indeed, until Daddy takes the T-Bird away—a fine mix of rock metaphors—or until your retinas fry like an egg on an Austin sidewalk in August. Looking into the eyes of the sun is tricky thing, the job of shamans and poets and priests —to give you a glimpse of heaven without being blinded by the light.

Poets and shamans are a safer bet. Priests, often as not, are selling a product and want you sit back and listen, eyes down. Poets and shamans want you to dive in, look up and see where they’re pointing, fly with the condors. To find a shaman, you may have to grab an Indiana Jones hat and climb a mountain or two—there are some good ones in Peru. (Mountains and shamans.) Want a poet instead? Start your car, crank up some Springsteen, and hit the road— looking up every now and then at the sun. – Michael Abedin

by Dr. Joe Vitale

Arguing for LIMITS When I was in Kuwait, speaking on positive thinking and happiness, a skeptical man in the audience politely asked, “Where is the evidence that happiness will make a positive difference in my life?

I smiled. Even though two other speakers at the same event were recognized psychologists on happiness (one a Harvard graduate) and had already delivered compelling evidence for the benefits of positive thinking and positive psychology, this man wanted something more. Well, I had an answer for him. “You can find evidence for whatever you want to believe, I replied. “If you want to believe happiness works, then research online and you’ll find evidence to support your belief, I continued. “If you want to believe unhappiness is better, then research online and you can find evidence to support that belief, I added.

And then I delivered the punch line.

Dr. Joe Vitale is the globally famous author of numerous bestselling books, including The Attractor Factor and Zero Limits, a star in the hit movie The Secret, founder of Miracles Coaching and The Secret Mirror, inventor of Hypnotic Writing, and a man ‘on fire’ to live his passions and help the world. “If there’s evidence for both happiness and unhappiness as ways of life, which are you going to choose? The crowd applauded. I don’t know if the man got the point or not. The crowd seemed to. But the polite skeptic was coming from a mindset that was arguing for his own limitations. After all, why ask for proof that happiness is better – unless you want to remain unhappy? And why would anyone want to remain unhappy? Author Richard Bach famously wrote, “Argue for your limitations and sure enough, they’re yours. Many people want to stay unhappy because they believe it serves them. They believe it keeps them “real.

They believe if they get happy, they may not do anything, or may be denying “reality. What they don’t seem to understand is unhappy people are less productive, practical, realistic, healthy, humorous or social. I learned this back in the 1980s, when I studied with Barry Neil Kaufman, author of such books as To Love Is to Be Happy With.

The myths around unhappiness. One of the myths, Barry says, is the belief that unhappiness will motivate you, while happiness will not. As he explained it, the truth is that unhappiness will keep you stuck, while happiness will propel you forward by the simple joy of living. My understanding of limiting beliefs went even deeper when I started working with Mandy Evans, whom I often call the original Miracles Coach. Mandy says some of our top limiting beliefs are: t * should be able to make lots of money, but I can’t. t * EP OPU EFTFSWF TVDDFTT BOE IBQQJOFTT t * OFFE UP UIJOL QPTJUJWF FWFSZ EBZ UP DIBOHF NZ limiting beliefs. t *G TPNFPOF DIFBUT NF PS CFUSBZT NF * IBWF UP HFU even or live with resentment. t *G * XFSF IBQQZ * XPVMEO U EP BOZUIJOH t 'FFMJOH CBE NPUJWBUFT NF UP DIBOHF UIJOHT t *G * EP OPU HJWF QFPQMF XIBU UIFZ XBOU * XJMM FOE up all alone. t * TIPVME IBWF XPSLFE UIJT PVU CZ OPX t * DBOOPU FBSO B MJWJOH EPJOH TPNFUIJOH * MJLF t #FUUFS TUPQ XBOUJOH JG ZPV HFU ZPVS IPQFT VQ you’ll just get hurt.

I

n 1532, God returned to a vast empire in western South America, just as the legends said he’d promised. Connected by 25,000 miles of cobblestoned paths and roads, its capital was Cusco, high in the Andes in what’s now Peru. Foothills were terraced to grow food on every bit of arable land, watered by an irrigation system surpassing Roman aqueducts as an engineering feat, still in use to this day. The legends said God would again have a beard, lighter skin than the Andeans, and shining garments. Sounds a bit like a certain Nazarene, except this time God’s shining garments were steel armor – and the legends didn’t mention he and his angels would ride in on fierce, fourlegged beasts, carrying tubes that spouted lightning, thunder, and death. When the smoke cleared, the conquistador Francisco Pizarro and less then two hundred Spaniards had routed tens of thousands of Quechua warriors in the service of their ruler, the Sapa Inka – the son of the Sun.

Who were the Inca? Technically, there was only one, the ruler – Sapa Inka literally means “the only Inca” – but the Spaniards’ custom of referring to the empire and its people as Inca caught on, the way customs do when the people who start them are running things. There were fourteen, in two dynasties starting around 1200 AD with Manco Capa and ending with Atahualpa. The Spanish appointed a few figureheads, including Tupac Amaru, who tried to rebel and met with the same fate as his rapper namesake half a millennium later. There was some truth to the notion of naming the people after the ruler. As in any tribe, they were extensions of each other. Both were extensions of their father the Sun, and it was the Inca’s job to intercede with him on his people’s behalf and relay messages to them. The occasion for this, the rock festivals of the day, was an annual pilgrimage from the four corners of the empire to a place near the capital, Cusco.

Inti Raymi. Domini, domini, domini – you’re all Catholics. Fresh from the Inquisition, the Spaniards took the Inka Atahualpa hostage when he seemed reluctant to convert to Catholicism. Atahualpa offered a ransom of one room filled with gold higher than he could reach, another with silver. The conquistadors, fun-loving conquerors that they were, killed him once they had the loot, gave the Spaniardized name Inca to the people instead of the recently deceased ruler, and set out looking for more gold and silver. That’s pretty much a brief history of South America – all of the Americas, come to think of it. Technology versus the tribes, intellect versus intuition, a linear march to victory versus living in the web. Same plot, difference cast, from Columbus to Cortez to Custer. (Okay, Custer was a victory for the tribes, largely because Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse were brilliant and Custer was a pompous ass, but otherwise it’s been a grim history.)

A long celebration led to June 21, winter rather than summer solstice in Inca land, culminating with a procession of the Inca and his family to Saksaywaman, an amphitheater built into and with natural stone. Musicians and dancers from the four directions celebrated his arrival, and emissaries brought tribute, news, and requests for good weather, good fortune, and good news from the sun. The Inti Raymi is still re-enacted with dancers and performers from all over Peru, a gathering of the tribes, just as it was in the Incas’ reign. Vendors offer everything from fine woolen and alpaca weaving to Peru’s national delicacy – roast Guinea pig. (Nope – doesn’t taste like chicken.) True tribes are living, interconnected entities, with an essence and life force of their own, running deeper than a tattoo or two. Without a Sapa Inca or Inti Raymi, you have to roll your own nowadays. (Sorry – Facebook doesn’t count.) Image: Primal Essence – Mara Berendt Friedman

WRITTEN IN STONE

The Sacred Heart of Architecture by Scott Brunson (Part 3) There is no more sacred art than architecture, because man designs his own environment. Every building becomes the heart, the center of where you are, and good design should help you find and feel that center.

We should live in a sanctuary, where we can rejuvenate. Great civilizations always started as shelter, but became sacred. We need a space to be both sacred and a livable habitat. Inspiration must come from the land, what you’re seeking, your current state. The property must give you the cues. Good architecture, sacred architecture, should be able to put you in a place of alignment and fulfillment so you have fewer material wants, shrinking your footprint and changing the energy of your life to a positive charge – good feng shui has changed peoples’ lives. Pyramids are sacred, but they’re portals, and a little bit ego-inspired. Their builders wanted a big-assed cannon to

launch themselves to the other world, and people wouldn’t have been behind the idea if they didn’t believe – but now we need small houses, more mindfully made ones, to balance things out. Machu Picchu is the most incredible example of mindful design. The people who built it decided to live on top of a mountain and terrace it. We’re humans, we want flat surfaces, but this way the flat surfaces organically followed the shape of the topography, the shape of the hill, of what was already there. It’s efficient, created without getting in their own way. They had to shed massive amounts of water being on a mountaintop, but they figured out how to handle it and control erosion. It’s a living city. Natural living organisms terrace also – ants underground, termites in buildings, coral in the ocean.

Who told coral microbes to build a glass city in the ocean? Can’t get much greener than that. Currents of the ocean shape the coral in symbiotically beneficial ways. Architecture should copy nature again, go back to animal spirits and copy anatomy – the skeleton, the architecture of the body. Our creations should look like they’re moving, alive. That’s why cars are named after animals. A box costs less to build and takes less time, but this is a question of health. Kids don’t want to be in boxes their whole lives, but that’s what we do – so of course we end up on TV and on the computer, places for the imagination to play. As my imagination becomes less masculine and adult, more curious and childlike, my ideas are like visions. I want to build a house that looks like a turtle climbing out of a cliff. The house designed itself in my mind – I didn’t have to think about it. Front legs will be buttresses, and the wind will go right up and over the shell. Or maybe a teardrop-shaped house, another shape that’s already in nature. The Earth has been giving us signals forever, and the more we open up to them and embrace Mother Earth, the more we can become harmonious with her and leave less of a footprint, not need as much, not get all our contentment from the physical. Going inside should not mean leaving nature behind. Scott Brunson is an artist in stone, a mason who believes in magic and manifestations. Strings and Heartstrings by Michael Morris, Ph.D A popular question asked when people discover you have a Ph.D. in Physics is, “What about string theory?” In nine years of college, “string theory” was never part of my studies. String vibration, however – harp, guitar, piano, the violin family, and others – is essential to music, and its fundamentals are an integral part of basic physics courses.

How do these vibrations become the music you hear and appreciate? For those fortunate enough to be blessed with hearing, your miraculous ears take in sound waves and send translated electrical impulses to the brain, which then sends signals to the heart and the entire body through electrical and chemical processes. Music can then “tug at your heartstrings,” helping you experience love, joy, freedom, even bliss and relaxation. The effects of each instrument are amazingly varied. My primary instrument, the harp, is often associated with angels and the angelic realms. My Japanese flute has a soulful, deep quasi-Native American sound that allows notes to be gently bent and re-directed, recalling images of red rock canyons and incredible openness. The effects of music are far more complicated and wonderful, though. I wish I could accurately paint the emotional joy of residents at retirement homes hearing a song they loved as a child, or the bliss of being in a meditation in which live music embodying love and deep peace is being channeled brilliantly, or the appreciation my stepfather expresses when hearing me play the instrument that he loves so dearly – the bagpipes, a less than meditative instrument.

How does music help allow wellbeing? Your beliefs and expectations affect your experiences, and blissful music can change your expectations, as well as your mood. While you’re experiencing and resonating within deep relaxation, you’re allowing yourself to expect that all is well – and from that “all is well”-ness, wellness comes. Add in powerful loving words to lovely, live, freshly brought into this universe music, and you can participate in a truly blissful guided meditation. Reinforce your expectation that all is well – your beliefs really do intricately affect your wonderful human experience. Michael Morris, Ph.D Physics, M.S.E. E.E., is a professional harpist and Native flute player available for live music during meditations, and a Radiance/Reiki practitioner along with his wife and beloved, Belinda. Peaceful harp and flute music and meditations are available on CD and mp3 downloads. (512) 589-4075 www.Lovitations.com

The Heartwakers Club

Reviving the Tribe The Heartwakers Club, with Zaeli How can we loosen our grip on the idea that monogamy is the defining characteristic of “legitimate” relationships? Commitment and freedom are not mutually exclusive, and such romances exist, with different forms and names: open, ethical non-monogamous, poly(amorous), and my favorite – monogamish relationships. A warranted concern then follows – how will taking monogamy off its pedestal affect families? Most of us have been raised to equate exclusivity with morality, and regard any attractions outside a partnership as weakness or sin, regardless of whether those desires go acted upon. We believe this, even though we know that we’re wired for such feelings. Our mantra has been that we must suppress those feelings, for the sake of a functioning family unit. But is it possible that being “open” could actually strengthen marriages, and therefore, families? Here are two ways it might:

Open couples stay together. Well, not all the time. But neither do monogamous ones – breakups happen. Too often, however, they happen just because we get bored. We stop exploring each other, take our partner for granted, feel we have to choose between our mate and someone else begging for our soul’s attention – and there goes Junior’s family. Because being open requires so much honesty and attentiveness, these couples are less likely to find themselves on autopilot. A healthy open couple knows their own needs and boundaries. They’re not poisoned by jealousy or paranoia about cheating, because they can share where they stand. By choosing not to swap ownership of each other’s sexuality, each person continues to experience themselves as a fully sexual being rather than a retired jersey – which is great for libido, self-care, and keeping the heat in a long-term relationship. They live in a grateful acknowledgment that every day is a choice to be together. Every day is another vow. Joining someone in a bond of vulnerability takes great courage. Rather than slacking or cutting corners, doing openness the right way involves a lot of conscious soul work – examining fears, self-consciousness, lack of ultimate control, and guilt around our erotic nature. Any couples that do this together will fortify their foundation, expand their compassion – and have a lot to talk about!

Non-possessive partnership leads to nonpossessive parenting. This one scares people, but isn’t it really good news? Shrinking the family into a nuclear in-group/out-group has done childrearing few favors. Nowadays, parents are stuck with responsibilities that used to be spread across

12

multigenerational communities, and kids are saddled with all the stressful expectations of their folks, as though they’re not people themselves but Great Last Hope receptacles. It’s a recipe for loneliness, judgment, and being overwhelmed. The real traditional family model – the way humans thrived tens of thousands of years before modern economic norms pushed it from the mainstream – is one of co-parenting, wherein youth are exposed to many adults with varying points of view, strengths, and weaknesses, all of whom teach and love them. These kids aren’t led to see their parents as the ultimate authority on everything, only to face an angry reality check as teenagers. They’re raised to perceive and honor their inner authority, and to think of everyone in the community as kin. Now, opening a marriage doesn’t mean you have to move out to a commune, or even invite other lovers into your home. But it might mean that the mental fortress around your family becomes more fluid, so that a tribe of love and support can build around it.

It might not be for you, but it ain’t a bad idea. Monogamy is a legitimate choice, and I’m happy for those who choose it. But the time has come to admit it’s only one way of doing things, and that we owe it to the tradition of marriage to seriously consider whether – and how – we personally want to take that on. After all, any social contract has its pros and cons. What’s right for you? You better ask yourself, because you’re the only one who knows. THE WISDOM OF THE HIPS The Garden of the Lower Chakras

! #! !! " " " % # " $ "

by Eliza Kane “And now, let’s sink into the wisdom of our hips. This simple instruction offered by Sara Ballard hung in the minds and muscles of the freely dancing women who made up her Sunday morning Qoya class. The wisdom of the hips! Deep down, we remember this wisdom. It’s why ancient art and artifacts show fertility deities with greatly accentuated curves. It’s why, around the world, women’s hips are either accentuated or obscured by dress and dance, in proportion to the culture’s recognition of feminine power. It’s why, even today, indigenous peoples tend to squat, rather than sit at ninety degrees, keeping their joints flexible and their spines properly supported.

A woman’s hips create the threshold between worlds. They hug the womb of possibility, creation, and bodily memory. This is where we join the above and below of our bodies. This is where we can pivot into new directions, or twist to survey the world around us. This is the garden bed where our lower chakras are rooted. Unfortunately, a typical western lifestyle doesn’t emphasize the mystical and physiological importance of exercising the hips, of staying connected to their power and their playfulness. Dances that accentuate hip movement pop up now and again, usually from subcultures of color, but these get casually dismissed by the mainstream as vulgar, tacky, or “primitive. Meanwhile, we spend most of our days sitting on chairs that compress our vertebrae into unnatural angles, ultimately resulting in back pain, inflexibility, and sometimes degenerative discs.

How civilized! Limiting your range of motion limits your options in life, but it doesn’t have to happen. This is one of the few aspects of aging that you can opt out of – if you develop a practice to prevent it – and prevent it you must, because, as Sara reminds us, there’s so much more at stake than whether or not you can get your foot behind your head. By properly supporting the spine, your hips are, in a sense, the foundation of your nervous system, the magical lifeline where mind and body literally connect and communicate. If strengthening that isn’t worth a Sunday morning, what is? Brooke Drake – Consultant

In 1911, American adventurer and sort-of archeologist Hiram Bingham – said to be the model for Indiana Jones, right down to the hat and the disregard for finer points of archeological preservation – trekked into the Peruvian Andes and rediscovered Machu Picchu, mysterious Lost City of the Incas. Nowadays you can trek if you like, but it’s easier to take a train. It’s still quite a journey. Fly to Lima, then Cusco, ancient capital of the Inca Empire (a city with its own rainbow-colored flag). Catch the train in Agua Caliente in the shadow of a statue of Pachacuti, most honored of the Incas and builder of Machu Picchu (pronounced Mock-chew Peek-chu by Quechua-speaking guides). In a valley six thousand feet above sea level, surrounded by towering peaks, it’s the most visited attraction in South America.

Phone home – and pass the coca. Like the Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu almost feels like it’s had some of its juju sucked out by being viewed so much – but like the Canyon, it’s still amazing. (One guide said returning to the site just before it reopened after several months of flooding was a completely different experience.) The juju returns, though, if you’re in a group guided by local shamans, who are allowed to do traditional ceremonies in tourist-restricted areas. It’s easy to see why some say Machu Picchu and Incan culture are extraterrestrial in origin. Aligned with celestial patterns, gigantic blocks of stone were fitted without mortar so tightly you can’t slip a blade of grass between them, arranged in uneven patterns to distribute the stress of earthquakes – over five hundred years ago, by people using no wheels, draft animals, or slaves. They did, however, have the sacred coca leaf – still do, at markets and drugstores. Only two of over two hundred varieties have alkaloids to make cocaine (a lot of cocaine). The

14

others, chewed or in tea, are a handy way to deal with altitude sickness, fatigue, or one too many Pisco Sours the night before.

Taquile and Titicaca. Machu Picchu is the best-known sacred site in Peru, but there are hidden jewels like the Temple of the Four Elements, or the Temple of the Moon near Cusco, a pair of caves surrounded by quinoa fields – the womb of the Earth, where you might fly with a condor, or be tapped with a sacred packet by shamans and feel the aches and pains of your travels disappear. Equally amazing as Machu Picchu is Lake Titicaca, a fun word to say. At 12,500 feet, it’s the highest navigable lake in the world, so big the PeruBolivia border bisects its crystal-clear waters. (“We got the Titi,” Peruvians tell Bolivians, “and…”) Since who knows when, the Pre-Incan Uru people have covered blocks of sod with reeds from the lake to make the floating Uros Islands, where they still live in reed huts and fish from reed boats.

Taquile, a hilly, non-floating island, is known for its traditional way of life, its fine weaving, and its amazing view of the lake – a fine sight on a final day of a Tour de Peru. What spiritual insights stand out after such a journey? For starters, llama is pronounced yama, and the way to tell llamas from alpacas is to yell “Hey, llama!” and see who turns to look. Oh, and you forgot to see if the bathtub really does drain backwards in the southern hemisphere.

There is a tradition in some indigenous cultures where a Talking Stick is passed around in a circle. As each person has the stick they are invited to speak, uninterrupted, for a brief period of time. So often when we speak we’re met with unsolicited, fix-it help or someone jumping in to tell their own story, because they need to be heard as well. The Talking Stick practice teaches others in the group how to listen, fully and respectfully – and for the person holding the stick, it’s an opportunity to feel truly heard. Talking Stick traditions have implicit within them the quiet, listening nature of a tree.

Yes, trees listen, too. Trees listen, communicate and react. Many people discount plant consciousness because plants don’t have central nervous systems, as animals do. Trees, however, have energy fields, with chakras, just like every other living thing. They pull in information about the world around them through these chakras and convert the information into electrical signals, just like we do. Research shows they communicate with each other as well, through the mutual release of pheromones. There’s a saying: “To believe consciousness is in located in your brain is like believing there’s a little man inside your radio.” The point is that there are different types of consciousness. The body does have consciousness, but it’s all about survival. This consciousness, run by our brains, keeps our bodies alive and running, and our egos motivated to thrive. The consciousness of our higher self, however, comes from someplace beyond the brain, and the brain registers this awareness – but it doesn’t generate it. Anyone who’s had a near death experience knows that while their brains were in a period of inactivity, they were still fully conscious.

Trees remember. There’s a second level of consciousness that transcends our central nervous system, continuing on long after the body dies. This is the “programmable” consciousness of our lightbodies. All living things have them, and a tree is no exception. When you tap into a tree’s chakra system, you tap into

16

the memories or imprints it has stored or programmed – into its light-field consciousness. Because a tree usually has a much longer lifespan than a human, it may have stored memories from long before you were ever born. It may remember a valley before the river was dammed. It may remember the original people of the land. They can also remember you. Using simple lie detector technology, studies show that they react to a person who damages them, or even to someone who damages their neighbor trees. If that person comes near them again, the lie detector signal becomes frenetic, indicating an increased level of awareness. Trees are our silent wisdom keepers here in Middle Earth. They listen and record our history as it unfolds. You’ll find that they, too, often gather in sacred circles. You can find them creating “tree rings,” as they root in around Earth vortices. Have you ever stood in one? Tree rings are very magical. They create portals between the visible and invisible worlds, giving you access to the energy of creation as it stirs and balances there. Next time you see a group of trees in a circle, step into the center of it and see how you feel! A great way to honor the wisdom of the trees is by making your own Talking Stick. Find a particularly interesting stick and adorn it with the strings, feathers, and crystals that call its magic back in. Sit in a sacred circle, as the trees do, and pass it among your friends. Let only the stick holder speak. Listen. Watch how you can create a sacred portal between the worlds while your communication deepens – and your soul connections strengthen. Christina Allen’s work as an Intuitive, Healer, Teacher, and Founder and Director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). Mental ental Health and Spiritual p Practice

FINDING THE LINK

When he walked onto the stage of the Ame American consciousness in 1920 as a public speaker, Swami Yogananda (later renamed Paramahansa Yogananda) had a simple message – concentrate on the Divine Presence regularly, and you will awaken as a human being into greater health, happiness, and personal power that transcends your physical body. The body of evidence proving that mental and physical health are determined by the strength of our connection to Spirit continues to grow. The popular series of HeartMath books, for example, emphasize inner stillness and focus on inner truth to combat anger, anxiety, and hopelessness. Even in ancient times, King Saul found that the shepherd David’s harp music soothed and healed his troubled mind. As the Bible says, “Be still and know that I Am.” When our minds are brought into focus on the Divine through prayer and meditation, we find peace and healing. As organized religion wanes in popularity throughout most of the world, those seeking a deeper connection to the meaning of life often turn to programs that support a structured discipline, such as the Twelve-Step Program.

Bookshelves groan with the weight of New Age spirituality. The work of Byron Katie teaches people to change thought patterns and free themselves from fear and doubt. The works of Marianne Williamson and Carolyn Myss teach people to find within their lives a sense of the self as soul. Long before New Age Spirituality, however, Paramahansa Yogandana brought basic tools of meditation to the West, including the technique of Kriya Yoga. He said, “Spiritual resurrection means metaphysical relaxation, to withdraw the consciousness from the tenacious habit of identification with your body. In meditation you release yourself from identification with your mental body by stilling the restless sensory mind.” Tying eastern and western together, Yogananda brought the message to the West that the practice of stilling the body, focusing the mind on the Divine Presence, and controlling the breath brings peace and joy. His writings include a series of lessons sent through the mail that teach the practice of yoga meditation. Meditation: Awaken Your Inner Power is a free public lecture held Friday, September 25, 7:30-8:30pm at King-Seabrook Chapel, Huston-Tillotson University in Austin. Informal fellowship follows. The talk is part of a weekend-long event by Austin Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), 1820 Garden St., Austin, 78702. Information: (512) 836-4712, www.SRFaustin.org

Anne Rice’s Witching Hour was my favorite book at age sixteen. The main character came from a long lineage of seers, and used that skill in her profession as a surgeon. She was able to see into her patients’ bodies and augment her medical knowledge to save lives Craniosacral Therapy – or rather, its hybrid, Core Synchronism – was my own introduction to developing similar skills. This system of hands-on medicine follows a physiological respiration within the body. When following the movement of the cerebrospinal fluid, my awareness is inside all the nooks and crannies of the brain, skull, organs, tissues, even the channels of the etheric body in the chakras.

It’s at this point you ask, as a practitioner… How do you know what’s happening here? How is it effective? Experience and observation has shown that the application of intuition into a structure gives it a place to specialize. For me, the study of medical and etheric anatomy, elemental relationships within the body, emotional remedies, natural cures – as well as tools for viewing what is happening for a person on a spirit level – are that structure. What fills in the gaps is something inherent to all humans. The ability to know, intuit, heal, grow, and change are birthrights, things all of creation conspires to bring about. The ancients teach that this dimension is created by two opposites spinning around a neutral, still point, along with a deep relaxation that allows everything to find its origin when given enough pause. Identifying the block, pain, or cause of concern is equally represented in the physical, etheric, astral, and mental bodies. Everyone has all of it overlapping all the time – and what’s remarkable is that they function as a whole. A past life and a kidney do have things in common – they both share the ease as well as the disease. In this way, a lot of choice is available in how you want to heal. Knowing what’s best for you is potent medicine, and can augment any other therapy you need. Rev. VITAMIN D The Vitamin that’s a Hormone by Dr. Melissa Miskell

‌your body can produce vitamin D from exposure to sunlight.

Vitamin D is misnamed, since it’s technically not a vitamin n —it’s a hormone. Vitamins have to be ingested because your body can’t produce d th them, but your body can produce vitamin D from exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D is your body’s first line of defense against inflammation, and inflammation is now being seen as the beginning of just about every disease process.

As a society, we are universally low in vitamin D. The reason for this stems from the fact that we’ve become an inside society, and from wearing sunscreen when outside. In order to get the proper amount of sun exposure to maintain good vitamin D3 levels, you would need to expose your torso and back for thirty minutes per day – and most of us don’t even come close to this amount of exposure daily. There are only small amounts of vitamin D in a few foods, and it’s not easily absorbable, making it nearly impossible to get what you need from food. Most of those foods also aren’t part of a vegetarian or vegan diet – fatty fish, egg yolks, beef liver, cod liver oil, mushrooms. If you want to achieve optimum health and wellness and you regularly avoid sunlight or use sunblock, it’s a good idea to supplement your diet with liquid vitamin D3 daily. Supplementing with vitamin D3 may help maintain healthy bone density and teeth, and also provide the following benefits: t 1SPNPUF FóDJFOU VUJMJ[BUJPO CZ UIF CPEZ PG DBMDJVN JSPO NBHOFTJVN QIPTQIBUF BOE [JOD t "JE IFBMUIZ JNNVOF TZTUFN GVODUJPO t 1SPNPUF IFBMUIZ DPHOJUJWF GVODUJPO BOE NPPE preventing depression. (Don’t you feel better outdoors, on a sunny day?)

Vitamin D testing. Testing should be part of a normal visit for hormone tests, and involves a simple blood draw. It’s a relatively inexpensive supplement, available through healthcare providers or health food stores, in gelcaps or as an easily absorbable liquid. D is essential to good health, working in conjunction with other hormones to provide a higher quality of life and a feeling of wellbeing – and they all work together much better than they do separately. Dr. Melissa Miskell is a board-certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist specializing in bio-identical hormones, anti-aging, and overall wellness at Focus Women’s Health, providing vitamin D testing and supplements. EMPOWERING

THE BACK BODY

by Natasha Benton Our bodies are instruments of exploration, limitless channels through which we experience our lives, each other, and our planet – and yet you can live without fully experiencing your body’s natural lightness and playfulness. Sridaiva, a dynamic movement practice similar to martial arts, feels like everything you’re taught never to do as a vinyasa yoga student – and yet it feels so intuitive and free, opening the belly, expanding the curves of the spine, hovering the heels, and discovering the power of the glutes. The Bowspring shape you make with your body is similar to the stance you’d make if you were going to jump or sprint, and has the potential to shift the perception of the human body as a weight-bearing structure into the experience of the body as floating and light.

Most modern postural movement focuses on the front body. Contemporary versions of exercise modalities like yoga and Pilates can sometimes overemphasize core strength, teaching students to contract the front body, harden the belly – and ultimately limit the space to breathe. By comparison, Sridaiva opens up and lengthens one of the most vulnerable parts of the human body – the underbelly. Focus is redirected to toning the back body, teaching the glutes to fire before the quads and the lower back and recruiting the entire body to work for you, rather than relying on a select few muscles to do all of the work. When all parts of your body work together in harmony, you create a more sustainable posture – and more sustainable way of living. Sridaiva massage takes the cutting-edge alignment principles of the movement practice to a new level. By breaking through scar tissue that locks your body in flexion and relaxing overworked areas that initially want to do all of the work, Sridaiva massage has the potential to repattern forward-bending, downward-spiraling fascia, opening the body to new growth. To put it simply, the movement practice sculpts your body from the inside-out, while the massage sculpts your body from the outside-in. Together, they put you in deeper connection with your body, the ways in which you hold yourself, and the ways you interact with the world.

The Duke at the Zach by Michael Abedin Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, born just shy of the beginning of the twentieth century, didn’t come into the world as a duke – his mama turned him into one. The daughter of a former slave, she enrolled him in piano lessons with the aptly named Marietta Clinkscale when he was seven, and surrounded him with dignified and elegant women to teach him grace and manners.

Miss Clinkscale’s tutelage didn’t really take. At least not until he was fourteen and started sneaking into pool halls, hearing piano players that inspired him to knuckle down on his training. The grace and manners, however, worked so well (along with his spiffy duds) that his buddies nicknamed him “Duke.” Ellington assembled several bands, working his way up in 1927 to a long-standing gig at Harlem’s famed mobster-owned Cotton Club, featuring black entertainers and well-off white patrons dressed to the nines, slumming for good music and illegal hooch on the wrong side of town. Dance and burlesque acts were sometimes just the other side of racist, featuring scanty, jungle-inspired costumes, and Ellington cleverly used growling trumpet and a wah-wah rhythm for a hotter, sultrier sound that caught on with other musicians. The Cotton Club made the Duke one of the early innovators of the uniquely American genre of jazz, and one of the first black performers to control his own career, working in stage musicals and films and composing over a thousand original pieces.

A little piece of the Cotton Club has timetraveled to Zach Theatre. Sophisticated Ladies features Brian Whitted with white tie, tails, and white piano, conducting a live orchestra like the Duke – with piano cues and hand signals. Like the original club, it’s a musical revue, with torch singers and glamorous, elegant singers and showgirls – sophisticated ladies – and tap dancers. (Afra Hines kills her piano-top torch singer and tap dancing numbers.) Zach’s rebranding as a classy venue to see classy shows is one of the bright spots of Austin’s rapid growth. In a city drowning in hipsters and grunge, it’s nice to see what it was like when sophisticated folks, onstage and off, dressed up for a night on the town. Zach collaborates with the Long Center and other venues for an August 23 open house and block party. www.TheLongCenter.org/openhouse Sophisticated Ladies, through August 23. Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I used to weigh 315 lbs., now I’m at 160 lbs. However, for the past two years, I’ve been trying to get rid of stubborn loose skin and belly fat. I feel like my issue is deeper than just working out harder. Any guidance from my spirit guides, angels, and ascended masters from the other side? Sincerely, Eugene, 36, San Antonio, TX Dear Eugene, Congratulations on your tremendous weight loss. Lifting weights and treadmill is a good solution, coupled with a diet of a lot of raw food and protein to assist the process. You’re in line for what we call “ascension,” which means you begin to receive messages from on high. Archangel Raphael will be your speaker and teacher.

Dear Ashtara, When and how am I going to find my new husband? Sally, 58, Cedar Park, TX Dear Sally, It seems that you will be lucky with love during the coming year. You will find a partner to dance with, go shopping with and live together. He is two years younger than you and has his own beautiful home. Together, both of you will furnish a new house which you will cherish. He likes to clean, run, play golf, but most of all pamper you for the rest of your life. It seems that he would marry when you are ready. Your guardian angel is Sandalfon.

Dear Ashtara, I love my life and honor the angels and masters for the guidance they provide me. I recently reconnected with my etheric ‘majestic partner.’ What are the next four steps for us to co-create a magical life together? Renee, from a Galaxy Far-far Away Dear Renee, Visualize a unique scene with the two of you. Then imagine or figure

26

out what direction you will be taking. Count your many blessings and be very grateful for the reunion. And, finally, consider the mystical partnership a unique opportunity to find yourself. Be looking for an angel named Melchizedek to enhance your vision.

Dear Ashtara, I have been in a caregiver’s career for many years and I’m thinking and dreaming of just going for my real passion, art. My job ends in just three days, so I’m ready to take that leap of faith. Will I be successful in this pursuit in painting and illustrations, or is there something else on the horizon? Mia J., 37, Austin, TX Dear Mia, Focus on the adage “Do what you love and the money will follow,” because energy follows thought. Formulate and define a plan of action for your career and remember that what you focus on expands in a magnanimous way. Set your goals high and write them down, as you know in your heart and your soul they will be reached. Be practical, use your common sense and focus on art only. This message is from God Himself.

Private Sessions can be scheduled P ((in person or phone) that include psychic, medical, profound healings, questions m answered and more. Life in the Playground by Deborah Antich I recently had a conversation about dealing with difficult people. A woman said, “I’m working on moving forward, creating a happy, peaceful space around me, but have a coworker who’s like a black cloud! She comes to my cubicle and spouts her BS about whatever’s irritating her that day, and I feel drained and exhausted. I used to get into it with her, but I’m ready to move on. What can I do? I feel trapped! Who hasn’t felt that way? Look at a couple of key points in the story: t i8F XPSL UPHFUIFS w &YBDUMZ Work together, but when she starts talking about personal issues, redirect. Let her know you have a certain amount of time to dedicate to the conversation. “I need to work on this project, so we have fifteen minutes. Setting a time frame makes work the focus. Redirecting works with dogs and toddlers – it can work with coworkers, too. t i* VTFE UP HFU JOUP JU XJUI IFS w 5IBU T JNQPSUBOU :PV used to complain together – but now you’ve moved on. Did you let her know that? When she complains, she’s expecting more of the same. You need to let her know you can’t do that anymore. Sound harsh? It can. It can sound judgmental too, so watch the approach. Instead, invite her along for the ride. Show her how different things can be once you let go of negative, annoying stuff by sharing positive experiences. You don’t have to become best friends – just keep it positive at work.

Leaving the sandbox. Lastly – recognize and accept. She may not want to come with you. In fact, she may resent the hell out of you for ditching her, leaving the sandbox for the swings, striking out for new, richer, possibly scary experiences. When you’re ready to move forward, you can’t let someone hold you back. She may stay in the sandbox and badmouth you to other kids – or, one day, while enjoying the breeze in your face, you may see her on the swing next to you. When you leave the sandbox, you don’t know – and don’t have to. You just have to do what works for you, and not let someone else hold you back.
