TO EVERYONES EARS

Finding the right words can be tricky. How do you culminate your entire relationship with someone and sum it up in a few minutes that “bring down the house”?

You can wing it and the night before your big stage presence try to come up with things that are witty and heartfelt that speak to the true companionship of the person you are writing about. You may even put it off to the day of the event and say, “ I can easily tell some great memories about my dear friend or love of my life” and then disaster strikes! You had 3 glasses of champagne instead of 2 at cocktail hour. Everyone is seated for dinner and the glasses star “Ching Ching Chinging”. Your heart starts to beat fast and everything that you thought you could say and had prepared “right up there” is gone. What do you do? Well at this point we are sorry to say it’s too late. You may have an epic fail of a speech. You may walk away feeling you really messed up your big chance to make a lasting memory. What ever you came up with at this point was likely not what your heart wanted to say.

All of this may have been avoided had you met Katelyn Peterson of Wedding Words. It’s not too good to be true. She actually helps people craft the most perfect words and coaches you through the nervousness no what the occasion! She talks to us about how she gets you to spill the goods in the most elegant way that leaves you looking like a poetic rock star at any event and no matter what your role is.

Adore: Do you recall a particular moment that you felt speech writing for weddings was something that was your calling?

Katelyn: The idea for my vow and speech writing business was born the weekend of my grandpa's funeral. My dad struggled with how to write a eulogy that would do justice to how he felt about his dad. I worked with him line by line to rewrite the eulogy and reread it to my dad. It was exactly how he wanted to capture his dad but he had no idea how to put all of his ideas and emotions into writing by himself. From that moment, I realized there must be other people who struggle to articulate their feelings for milestone moments.

Adore: You say that you love love stories from your days as a bridal gown consultant, but at what point did you know wedding speech writing was a service that many needed and were possibly afraid to ask for?

Katelyn : After the experience mentioned before, I created a website quickly to test the idea. Soon one bride turned into two and grooms and parents and wedding party members all began reaching out to me. Each one would come to me saying how stressed and overwhelmed they felt. That's when I knew there was a need for a vow and speech writing service.

Adore: You have so many great services for all important facets of family and friends within an occasion, but what is the most sought out service you offer? Why do you think that is?

Katelyn : Couples reaching out for custom written vows is very popular. Couples are looking for ways to personalize their wedding and make sure it really takes on the feeling of their personality. What better place to do that at your wedding than during your vows?

Adore: What are the price ranges for them? Katelyn: Prices for various services currently range from $100 to $800.

Adore: When do you think someone should start to practice their vow writing to deliver the best possible speech because so often you hear of people trying to pull something together a few days or night before?

Katelyn: Vow and speech writing defiantly tend to be a task that people procrastinate on. And I think it's because they don't know what to write or how to do it. It's this thing that we're expected to intuitively know how to do but not everyone is a writer. I recommend that couples writing vows and wedding party members who are giving a speech should start no later than one month before the wedding date. This will give you time to write, re-write, and practice your speech.

Adore: What do you think blocks people from crafting a good speech for a wedding or any event for that matter? Katelyn: Fear blocks people from crafting their speech. Fear that it won't be good enough. Fear that it won't capture how they feel. Fear that people won't like it. My advice is to allow yourself to write that messy first draft. Don't judge it or yourself. Just get words down on paper. Editing will become your best friend but you can't edit if you haven't at least put a few words down on paper.

Adore: What is the process in starting to craft the perfect speech when you work with a client?

Katelyn: I meet with every client over a video call. I ask them a ton of questions but in a very conversational way. By the end of that call, I know what the theme of the speech will be and which stories I'll likely include or exclude.

Adore: What do you believe are the elements that make a speech about two individuals the perfect combination of tasteful, funny, emotional, and joyful?

Katelyn: Include stories about each person in the couple and stories about the couple together. Keep the stories short. You should be able to tell each one in 30 seconds or less. And make sure the story illustrates a trait about them in a positive way.

How important is delivery, intonation, presence when giving "the speech"? How you deliver a speech is incredibly important! People often understand tone more than words so be sure to practice. Focus on your pace, eye-contact, and intonation.

Do you coach people on things like when to pause, hand gestures, etc.. as part of your service? Yes. I provide a video with public speaking tips once each speech or vow has been finalized. Some clients also choose to work with me on their delivery in more detail. In this case, we'll schedule additional video calls where they practice in front of me and I provide real-time feedback.

I'm guessing a lot of people that come to you are nervous about this spotlight they will have on them, are there things you do in your process that "loosen" them up?

Don't drink too much. The key really comes down to practicing. The more you practice, the more comfortable you'll feel with what you're saying. Plus, when you have a speech written that you feel confident about, it helps to not feel so nervous when it comes time to deliver it.

Is there "exercises" that someone can do pre "big day" to get them ready to deliver the best possible speech or vows? Practice in front of someone you trust to give you constructive feedback. Drink water to avoid that "dry mouth sound." And smile. Your voice sounds happier and more confident when you smile as you speak.

What are the most common descriptive words or combinations that are the biggest hit in a speech about a couple and to each other or "recipe"? What are the ingredients to a perfect wedding speech? Everything I write is custom so I don't rely on common phrases.
