Winter Weekend
Keep everyone sane during the winter months with these interactive activities easy to keep your family having fun without bundling up
by: Taylor Abrahamsen
Here in Texas we enjoy the good fortune of mild winters that make life easy to accommodate around the weather. We all recount the excitement during the once in a blue moon snow we receive or the ice days that shut down our roadways and schools. One thought that can be lost in the excitement is what to do to keep your family entertained if everyone is stuck indoors! Here are some great ideas, many that use things found around the house, to help keep your kids amused without causing destruction. Sumo Style! Perfect for any age to enjoy this easy to create game which inspires hours of entertainment as long as the pillow holds fluff. All you need is large shirts and pillows to stuff in a sumo belly and the kids will laugh their way around the house waddling back and forth. Concerned about someone getting too competitive? Youtube has some great videos of Sumo Wrestlers practicing without contact, and bonus: it could help them learn about another culture from around the world!
Do you have a rambunctious little one, a large box, and some spare battery powered lights around? Then get ready for your youngster to show off their imagination! Make a new world, perhaps Santas’ village or a magic time machine, inside the box with lights and colors. It’s entertaining to see the minds of children as they explore and create, even the older kids may want to join in on the fun. Connect multiple boxes together or next to each other with cut out windows to make a city for everyone to take part in creating! It will take time to color it all, filling up the afternoon with creativity and exploration, and giving you time to knock out anything on your list.
Winter Weekend Interested in burning some energy while staying indoors? Time to bring out the homemade ice skates! Strap some wax paper onto the feet of your athlete with a rubber band or string to secure it and they are ready to glide. This fun indoor activity works on rugs, tile, and hardwood floors. It’s a hilarious take on winter sports, that is the perfect fit for fun and laughter to fill your home on even the coldest of days.
Do members of your family prefer more to work with their hands? Winter crafts are a perfect fit! These homemade snowflakes are easy to bring to life with items in the cupboard: all your need is glue, pasta, and a sprinkle of glitter and voila- a unique activity perfect to commemorate a snow day. Begin your creation by first laying out the design, glue into place each delicate piece, and once it dries, coat with a brush of glue, then make it sparkle! What a fun way to create something together, while letting each member of your family splash on their own style.
Another exciting craft perfect for a winter freeze are popsicle stick ice skaters! Using markers, have everyone decorate a popsicle stick person to be ready for a winter ride. Once they are ready for a temperature drop, fill a ramakin with water and cover with foil, puncture the top with the popsicle figure so it stands, and freeze. After the water freezes, gently remove from the molds and place on a metal tray and let them take off across the ice! Want to step up the game? Use pool noodles and tape to make a rink on a tile floor and the kids can turn it into a game to see which skater gets the furthest!
Working with your family to have indoor fun can seem stressful, but with some time to prep supplies before hand, it can be an easy unknown to tackle! Let your children in on the process and decide which game will come first. No matter which direction you chose to go the best way to ensure a memory for your family with indoor fun is to let your inner child come out!

Early Intervention
Sponsored By: A.I.M In the first 5 years of life, your child’s brain is developing rapidly and the building blocks for speech and language development are formed. During this time frame, children are communicating with peers and adults and the responses and feedback they receive, teach children the important roles of communication. If they do not receive appropriate feedback from peers and adults, this can lead to a delay in your child’s language skills. It is highly important to recognize signs of a language delay. If you are unsure whether to reach out to a professional regarding your child’s speech and language, ask yourself the following questions: Does my child have difficulty being understood by others, answering questions (i.e. How old are you? What is your name?), using 4-8 word grammatically correct sentences, using words to communicate, using and understanding a variety of vocabulary and/ or understanding and following directions?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, it is important to reach out and inquire about early intervention. If your child has a speech and/or language delay, additional support during these critical years is important Speech therapy at an early age can promote growth in reading and language, decrease frustration and behavioral problems due to inability to be understood and facilitate speech and language growth. There are numerous speech and language programs, such as Chatter Pals, that provide speech skills in a natural learning and language rich environment. These programs can: decrease the likelihood that students entering Kindergarten will continue to need speech therapy services, decrease the likelihood of reading disabilities associated with language and articulation impairments, improve effective communication skills to access the school curriculum, improve positive communication with peers and improve communication with parents to ensure faster carryover outside of the speech room.

Considering an After School Program? by: Taylor Abrahamsen When the school bell rings at the end of each day, children are excited for the afternoon freedom ahead. While kids are exhilarated, parents are stuck spending the end of each work day with the seemingly endless process of schedule coordination around sports, family help, play dates, and eliminating unsupervised care. After School programs provide a great solution to the schedule juggling, but will it benefit your child? Some may think it only will for those in at risk situations, but after many years of research, the results show it can benefit children in any situation in several different ways. There are many different types of after school programs out there, many with different focuses and ways to improve the life of your child. See some of the most valuable ways they can help your child, and some reasons why it may be worth considering after school, even if your able to provide alternative forms of care. As early as kindergarten, children have been proven to benefit from after school programs. A study of children involved in 21st Century Community Learning Center programs showed academic improvement in reading and math of over 40%, (Naftzger et. al., 2007). Considering this improvement is especially important as the number of learning disabilities increases across America. A study from 2017 shows that in public education one in five children have a learning disability such as dyslexia and ADHD, however only 1 in 50 have a learning accommodation plan, referred to as a 504 plan. This large gap helps to highlight the absolute need for further academic focus and additional help for many students. Providing this assistance can be a struggle for working families and often cuts into time together or activities that can help keep children active. After School options can solve this issue, provide a consistent homework routine, and better balance the opportunity cost of budgeting for a program. In addition to improvements in academics overall, classroom behavior has been proven to be bettered while participating in an after-school program, (Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, 2010). Bettered classroom behavior can create a more positive experience with education all around for your child. If learning is the focus in the classroom instead of behavior, students will be more engaged, teachers will be more focused, and parents will be happier. 19
www.hillcountryparents.com
Social and personal skills are also improved greatly along with self esteem and self confidence in programs with a focus on the social aspects of life, (Durlak & Weissberg, 2007). Unlike during the busy school day where time is accounted for, after school programs have more flexibility and time to teach beneficial interpersonal skills. Many programs offer leadership as part of the weekly focus with group activities to practice these valuable lessons. Have a child with some self confidence issues? Consider a program with a focus on leadership and they may find it to be a great way to feel surer of themselves as well as find it easier to make friends while working on these personal skills together.
Another important benefit people don’t often think of is the physical activity children in after school programs do. Students in after school tend to be more active compared to children that go home right after the school day. Georgia’s FitKid program determined that children that participate in after school provides an opportunity to address the growing problems of obesity and contributes to healthy lifestyles, (Yin, Gutin, Johnson, Hanes, Moore, Cavnar, et al., 2005). After sitting in class all day, being more active in the afternoon can be a game changer for kids. Running out all the energy they have also helps children sleep better. In addition, after school sports programs can better prepare younger children for school or club sporting activities by teaching the discipline required to be successful at it. Academic, social, and physical benefits together make after school programs a great idea to consider for your children. Many programs offer pick up at campuses, for regular and early release days, to allow you more time in your day or the headache of coordinating pick up. Many programs even offer drop in care and partial enrollment to assist you in getting the best of both perspectives on how to spend the day after 3pm. Look into the programs in your area to compare your options, you may find something cost effective and beneficial for your family and the needs of your children.
