keeping healthy this winter Winter is upon us once again, and with it comes not only the holiday’s and their notoriously hectic pace but also a lot of indoor activities that keep people in close contact with others.

Unfortunately, many people have trouble staying healthy during winter. However, there are ways to keep the family happy and healthy this season.

Encourage kids to wash their hands. Germs are often spread most quickly through our hands, which are in constant contact with hotbeds for germs, including doorknobs. While adults might be quick to wash their hands after they sneeze or cough, kids are often lax in the hand washing department. But washing hands thoroughly is an 8

www.hillcountrypubs.com

effective way to ward off winter germs that attach to hands after we sneeze, cough or simply touch a doorknob. Encourage kids to be diligent about washing their hands, not only after they use the restroom but whenever they sneeze, cough or arrive home from school.

Keep indoor air crisp and clean. Bringing home airborne germs, such as sickness-causing bacteria and other contaminants, is inevitable during winter. The kids’ school is a breeding ground for such germs, as is the shopping mall filled with holiday shoppers. Circulate indoor air. Stagnant air indoors can also increase the liklihood of cold and flu. Central heating can dry the body out and lead to dehydration, making it harder for the body to flush out poisons and germs during the winter months.

Get outdoors. Even if the weather outside is frightful, it can be beneficial to spend some time outdoors during the winter months. While it’s best to obey the local weather authority and advisories, if there’s no restrictions on spending time outdoors, getting outside can help the body fend off cold and flu. Because few people spend time outdoors in the winter, germs can gather inside and circulate among those who spend significant time indoors. As a result, those who spend all their time indoors are more vulnerable to cold and flu. When possible, bundle up and spend some time outdoors in the fresh air.

Squeeze in some daily exercise. While the holiday season is hectic, adults and kids alike should still find time to fit in exercise. Kids might get their daily dose in gym class, but adults need to make time as well. Exercise can prove a great means to relieving stress, and a body that’s strong and fit will be prove more capable of defending itself against airborne germs and bacteria.

staying “school ready” during break Parents and teachers may have to work together to help youngsters get back on track, and the following are few ways to do just that.

The holiday season can be a whirlwind of activity that culminates in lavish celebrations and, for many children, an extended vacation from school. But when the excitement of the holiday, or any break, has ended, children must return to the classroom, an adjustment that is not always so easy. Meals on the go and jaunts to the shopping mall or traveling, can make it difficult for children to readjust to the structured environment of school. Even a short time away from lessons may have students backsliding on information they once knew.

22 www.hillcountrypubs.com

Enforce typical bedtimes. As the season or break wears on, parents should gradually return their households to their normal routines. Youngsters’ bedtimes, which are not often adhered to during school breaks, should once again be enforced in the days leading up to their returns to school. A gradual transition back to an earlier bed time will have kids accustomed to going to bed and rising early once more. Cut down on play time. On the heels of the holiday season, children love to test out all their new toys and games. Some may wake up in the morning and spend the entire day trying to beat a video game or assembling a buildingblock creation or, spending time at the beach or amusement park. But as the end of the break draws near, parents should try to get back to a normal school day schedule, limiting the number of hours’ kids spend “playing”. Consider giving kids some brain-boosting puzzles or encourage them to read books.

Encourage kids to work on school projects. Teachers recognize the importance of a break for students, but some still assign work over the breaks. When break starts to wind down, encourage youngsters to start working on their assignments, devoting some time each day to their schoolwork. This can help keep kids’ minds sharp while ensuring that their work gets done.

Schedule some play time with friends. Children may be more anxious to return to school if they realize they’ll once again be able to see their school pals. Arrange a fun gathering of friends before kids return to school. Children may be not look forward to returning to school. But parents can employ a few strategies to make the transition back to the classroom easier.
