Volunteers keep fair tradition alive

Volunteers keep fair tradition alive

Welcome to the 2024 Summer Horse Racing Season and 136th Gillespie County Fair. I am honored to serve as President of the Board of Directors of the oldest, continuously operating Fair Association in Texas.

Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers, staff, directors and families for their hard work in keeping our long-standing traditions alive.

I would like to extend a huge thank you to our Gillespie County Officials, City of Fredericksburg and all the different businesses, organizations and individuals that support all our events. Without our community contributions and involvement none of it would be possible.

Our season will have four big weekends of Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing. Be prepared to see the heart pounding action of horses thundering down the track. Of course, plenty of cold beverages and a variety of food choices will be available for your enjoyment at each event.

We are starting out our summer season with our Fourth of July race meet on July 6-7. We also have a mobile betting option. If you haven’t signed up make sure to show up early to do so.

Night In Old Fredericksburg will be another fun weekend of horse racing on July 20-21, starting at 2pm. There will be a couple other events happening during the day such as a 42 tournament and washer pitching. Keep an eye out for more information on those events and any others that might be added as we get closer. There will be a State Championship Barbeque Cook-off on July 19-20 sanctioned with the Lone Star Barbecue Society. If you are interested in cooking or judging, check our website.

Our third weekend of horse racing will be August 10-11. Along with the racing, there will be the lamb and meat goat show in the livestock barn.

Fair start

The 136th Gillespie County Fair starts Thursday, August 22 and runs through Sunday, August 25.

Thursday afternoon people can bring their entries for the classes in the exhibition hall to be judged. Gates open at 5 p.m. and admission is free. There will be carnival rides throughout the weekend, vendors, animals and, of course, live music. The line up this year kicks off with Sin Sentido and Eric y Su Groupo Massore.

Friday starts off with the 136th Gillespie County Fair parade on Historic Main Street in Fredericksburg. This parade has upwards of 200 entries that ride the parade route and kicks off at 10 a.m. The conclusion of the parade leads everyone out to the grounds where gates open at 1 p.m.

There are vendors and a livestock show, and the results for all the exhibits entered into the exhibition hall. We start all the festivities that night by crowning the new Fair Queen and her Court. At the conclusion of the crowning, we will

have a dance with Billy Mata performing.

Saturday will resume livestock shows and another huge day of Horse Racing starting at 2 p.m. Following the races we will have a great night of live entertainment that starts with Mike Ryan. The main event of the night will be Easton Corbin.

Wrap up

Sunday wraps up our final day of the 2024 Horse Racing season. There are two big races that will be run during that day the Gillespie County Fair Derby and the Gillespie County Fair Futurity. Come out and see who the champions will be.

There is lots to see and do during the 136th Gillespie County Fair, so come on out for good food and the coldest beer in town. Vendors will be here selling a variety of goods all weekend, exhibits will be on display for everyone to view and a lot of livestock shows happening.

Don’t forget the Carnival and Midway that will be running each night. It really is a family event for all ages.

Scholarship Fest

Our final event of the year is our 28th annual Scholarship Fest on September 21. We will have live auction, silent auction, prize drawing and lots of other fun games to play. There will be a barbecue dinner served for all to enjoy while raising money for a great cause. To date we have awarded $672,100 to 912 Gillespie County youths.

It has been a pleasure and honor to serve as the 136th Gillespie County Fair President.

Thank you again for all your continued support this year and for future years. Hope to see many of you at our fun summer events.

Fair Celebrates Volunteers Fair Celebrates Volunteers

Volunteer honoree asks the right question

What is a volunteer? Someone who gives of his time unconditionally, takes no pay and loves what he does.

Daniel F. Crenwelge amassed a total time of 54 years of volunteering. His dad, Emil Crenwelge, raised Angora goats and was the King Angora goat raiser of his time.

Daniel continued the legacy of raising goats, lambs and registered Suffolk Rams. He guided his four children with the skills needed to participate in the local stock shows. He shared the knowledge he gained showing lambs during his teenage years with his own children.

In 1964, he witnessed the dedication of the volunteers from the Gillespie County Fair Association at their successful livestock showing program.

When his oldest daughter, Debora's, first show lamb took off without her letting loose of the leash, he watched how volunteers rescued, consoled and brushed her off after the ordeal. As a dad, he appreciated their quick reaction.

The next year, 1965, he asked if he could help with the livestock program out of the many volunteer programs that the Gillespie County Fair Association offered.

Daniel remembered filling and hauling the many bags of peanut hulls from the Peanut Factory to the original Fair Grounds (which as located at the present HEB baseball field locations).

“These hulls were used in the show arena and then fresh hulls where set out again for the auction sale,” he said. “We set up the pens for the show arena and rearranged for the sale. We also set up the auctioneer arena in the same area.”

After his first year of volunteering, he was hooked.

Crenwelge also helped other contestants with their lambs by shearing and teaching handling of the animal. Daniel was the “go to” person for shearing the lambs, since he was considered the fastest shearer in Gillespie County.

Crenwelge’s volunteering for the event did not stop with just spreading peanut hulls. He also was at the scales for weigh-ins and he was the one that checked all the lamb’s teeth. He made sure all the teeth were there and he thought there were maybe two times he had to disqualify a lamb.

He said he enjoyed showtime, to help check in the lambs for their divisions and to help individual young competitors in the show ring. Also, from catching the lamb that “got away,” to praising the exhibitor for their hard work if they placed first to placing last. Daniel was the familiar face to parents and exhibitors before and after the show. He was also a buyer at the sale auction and enjoyed the big smiles, handshakes, and hugs if he was the successful bidder.

Daniel's four children Debora Crenwelge Marpint, Dale Crenwelge, the late Danette Crenwelge Ransleben, and Danny Crenwelge, all showed lambs throughout their 12 years of school.

Daniel F. Crenwelge

He became a committee member then a sheep division superintendent in 1977, which included the lambs and the breeding sheep show. He held that position for many years. Daniel did not stop volunteering after his children graduated. He continued until 2019 for a total of 54 years.

He looked forward to the months before the shows to see new and old exhibitors, and their parents. He has seen lots of change in the shows from the grooming, exercise techniques, and the structure of the animals. He enjoyed the volunteering because it was great comradery and he just appreciated “the call” to do it again, year after year. He also enjoyed working the Francis Kott, Elmer Ellebracht, Andrew Jenschke, and Wilbur Ransleben for many years.

Daniel's volunteering taught him more strongly to continue to instill to always say “Thank You” and “Great Job “ to his 4 children, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. And that you do not always need to get money for an extra job (volunteering) you love to do.

Daniel F. Crenwelge did love his time volunteering for the Gillespie County Fair Association.

Fair volunteer honoree loves everything about the tradition

I am Ursula Worrell born in Fredericksburg. I married Charles Howard Worrell, 55 years go. We have two sons, James, who lives in Mason and Casey, who lives in Harper. Our grandsons are Pecos, 17, who shows cattle, Brazos, 13, who shows chickens and Jarrett, 12, who shows cattle.

The County Fair is the highlight of my life. I can’t wait for August to come around.

I started out bringing baked goods, sewing, needlework, canned goods and quilts every year.

I couldn’t wait to see if I would get a phone call that evening if I had won anything. At that time the nicest lady, Mrs. Weinheimer, was running the baking department. She always had a sweet smile and she did a great job. One day she asked me if I wanted to take over for her in the baking department. I was thrilled. I said yes.

I have worked in the baking department for 25 plus years. I loved every minute. Virginia Feuge helped me every year. We made the best team. It was so much fun to see familiar faces each year and to see what was brought to us. I feel it was the best job I ever had. I love all the people that I worked with.

I had six judges to judge all the food. We always had so much fun. Some of the judges are still there judging every year. We let the judges do all the tasting, but if there was something the judges said was outstanding, we had to get a bite. Sadly, enough I had to give it up. I have had many back surgeries, but I left it in great hands with Virginia Feuge. She has done an outstanding job.

I love the Fair and everything about it. You can ask my

family how excited I get when the Fair comes around. I appreciate the work that goes into getting the Fair up and running. I still participate in the Fair by bringing baked goods, canned items, needle work, flowers and a quilt. I just can’t quit.

Thank you so much for giving me a chance to do something that I love so much.

of this year’s royalty
of this year’s royalty

This year’s court is comprised of Queen Mattie Moore, First Duchess Jayecee Treibs, Second Duchess Laura Nielsen and Third Duchess Isabella Reeh. Each represents Gillespie County in such a way as to honor the fair traditions and bring goodwill to and experience the camaraderie of their hometown.

Second Duchess Laura Nielsen remembered a story from last year’s crowning of the queen that “captures the essence of camaraderie and joy” of the court.

She said, the newly crowned court were selling shirts and souvenirs during the fair alongside the 2023 court members.

“The atmosphere was electrifying as the band played the song, ‘Fishin’ in the Dark,’” Nielsen said. “The 2023 Fair Court Dutchess Addie Schoessow taught us a dance to go with the song. We all joined in, dancing and laughing, creating a spontaneous and heartwarming moment that we will always remember.”

First Duchess Jayecee Treibs said her “favorite part so far is the giving community, and how involved they are towards us and the fair association.”

Similarly, Nielsen said “It has been truly eye-opening to see the hard work, generosity and unity of our community firsthand.”

Memories made

Before becoming a member of the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association Queen’s Court, each contestant participated in last year’s Gillespie County Fair Parade and went through several interview sessions, all for the chance to represent Gillespie County as part of a longstanding tradition of fair royalty.

“I was inspired to apply to be a part of the Gillespie County Fair Court due to my deep admiration for the tradition and sense of community it fosters,” Nielsen said. “Each interaction has left me feeling more deeply rooted in our community and inspired by the people who make it so wonderful.”

The experience goes by fast Reeh said.

“Soak up every last moment; your reign is only for a short time,” she said.

Balancing act

Although not always easy to balance court responsibilities with other activities, Third Duchess Isabella (Izzy) Reeh said, “as long as I communicated with both sides I always found a way to make it work.”

Nielsen agreed.

“There were instances when events overlapped, but with good time management and a supportive team and court, I have managed to fulfill all my commitments,” said Nielsen, who is also a Fredericksburg High School Red Hotts and FFA member.

The unseen benefits

Queen Mattie Moore described how she has grown to love all of the little girls who dream to someday become a part of the court.

“I remember when I was little, I always looked up to the queen of the fair,” Moore said. “Now being in that position is so special and I really see how many little eyes are inspired.”

The duchesses of the court emphasize the meaningful connections that being in the court has granted them.

“I have enjoyed the amazing friendships,” Treibs said. “I knew these girls around school, but learning about them personally has been such an amazing experience.”

Advice for future court royalty

“Being on the court has made me less shy in public and has taught me to always wear sunscreen, because you will get sunburned in the parades,” Reeh said.

Treibs warned, “Watch out for staples and glitter. They are everywhere and they never go away.”

Being flexible and quick to change when the unexpected arises was another helpful note from the court.

“During the Bandera parade this year, our float started smoking. Luckily, the float was fine, but we ended up walking the rest of the parade,” Nielsen said. “It was an unexpected but memorable experience.”

Treibs added, “When we decided to walk the rest of the parade route, the people loved it.”

Easton Corbin headlines Saturday’s musical lineup, which also includes the Mike Ryan Band

The 136th Gillespie County Fair musical lineup brings big names in Western swing, traditional country, and Tejano music to Fredericksburg in August.

Easton Corbin will headline the concert Saturday night. With influences such as country greats Merle Haggard and George Jones, Corbin’s sound blends traditional and modern country, which has led to two number one singles in his career. His current radio and streaming hit, “Marry that Girl,” is from his first album in eight years, called Let’s Do Country Right. Corbin goes on August 24, at 10:15 p.m.

The Mike Ryan Band, also offering a big country sound, joins Corbin on the bill for Saturday, going on right before, at 9 p.m. Ryan was born in San Antonio and released “New Hometown,” the lead single from his forthcoming album.

Ryan’s last album, Bad Reputation, in 2014, featured a trio of number one singles on the Texas music charts. Ryan said his grandfather, who directed the Texas National Guard Band for three decades, was one of his biggest musical influences and fostered his love for music.

Friday night brings Billy Mata and his traditional Western swing sound. He is often compared to Western swing legends Tommy Duncan and Bob Wills. Mata goes on after the new queen is crowned at 8 p.m.

Thursday’s entertainment features two well-known Tejano bands offering energetic music made for dancing: Sin Sentido performs at 7 p.m. and Erick y Su Grupo Massore, at 9 p.m.

Decades of Royalty

The Gillespie County Fair has featured Fair Queens on the cover of its catalog for several decades, with the first queen appearing on the cover more than 70 years ago, in 1953. This page highlights some of the Gillespie County Fair

Queens throughout the last several decades. The 2024 Gillespie County Fair Queen’s Court includes Queen Mattie Moore, First Duchess Jayecee Treibs, Second Duchess Laura Nielsen and Third Duchess Isabella Reeh.

The Gillespie Fair once again dives into German tradition during A Night in Old Fredericksburg.

Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the event will take place on the weekend of July 20-21 at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Gates open at noon.

All day general admission for adults, 13 and up, is $10; children 6-12, $5, and ages 5 and under, free.

Other all-day activities include a 42 tournament, washer pitching and goat roping.

Sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbeque Company, a State Championship Barbeque Cook-off will be held on July 19-20. Anyone interested in cooking or judging, check the fair website at gillespiefair.com.

Easy access to live horse racing returns

July and August mark the 2024 season of live pari-mutual horse racing at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Eight days of racing will take place at the Class III track this season.

Sponsored by the Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association, the races will also include special events and activities.

To kick off the horse racing season is the Fourth of July Race Meet on Saturday and Sunday, July 6-7.

The next weekend of racing continues on Saturday and Sunday, July 20-21 with the Night in Old Fredericksburg Race Meet.

Moving into the month of August is the Gillespie County Race Meet on Saturday and Sunday, August 10-11.

To finish out the 2024 horse racing season will be two days of racing on Saturday and Sunday, August 24-25. These meets will be a part of the 136th Gillespie County Fair.

Post time for each race day is 2 p.m.

Following the traditions of the past, the Gillespie County Fair Grounds will offer race fans a covered grandstand, multiple betting windows, tote board, easy access and plenty of free parking.

The GCFFA is offering mobile betting. Through this service, race viewers can place their wagers through their phones.

However, according to fair association officials, this service will only work on the GCFFA premises. Patrons must be physically on the grounds before attempting to use the service.

General admission, reserved seating and box seating will be available. The general admission seats are available in both the grandstand and in the Biergarten while the box seats are located in the grandstand only.

General admission for the races is $10 for adults (ages 13 and up), $5 for children six to 12 years of age and free for children five and under. Box seats are $20 for any age. Summer season passes are also available for $60.

Online ticketing for all Gillespie County Fair and Festivals Association-sponsored events at the fairgrounds is available through the fair association’s website at www.gillespiefair.com.

In addition to the eight days of racing at the Class III facility, a simulcast facility is open at 35 Fair Drive for year-round wagering.

Simulcasting at the Race Barn is offered Thursdays through Sundays from horse and dog tracks around the country. The facility also includes a restaurant.

RACE DATES

• July 6-7: 4th of July Race Meet.

• July 20-21: Night of Old Fredericksburg Race Meet.

Ready, set, bet

1. The number of the race betting on and the amount of money that is being wagered from $2 and up.

2. The type of wager such as “Win”, “Place”, “Show”, “Quinella”, “Exacta”, “Trifecta”, etc.

3. The official program number of the horse or horses for the bet. It was noted that bettors should not use the horse’s name.

Understanding the racing program and how to bet: This detailed breakdown of a racing program information is included in the specific programs issued prior to each of the race meets. — StandardRadio Post file graphic

Racing Terms

ACROSS THE BOARD: Bet a horse to win, place and show, and if the horse wins, the bettor collects all three ways.

DAILY DOUBLE: In a “Daily Double”, the bettor picks the winners of two consecutive races designated as “Daily Double” in the official race program. Wager must be made before the start of the first of the two races. For example: “$2 Daily Double 8-9” means the bettor has selected the 8 horse in the first half and the 9 horse in the second half.

EXACTA: Pick the top two finishers in the exact order in which they finish. Example: “$2 exacta 1-2” means the number one horse has to finish first and number two horse has to finish second.

EXACTA BOX: Bettors can “box” two, three or more horses to cover a number of possible combinations. For example: a threehorse exacta box would make for six combinations and would cost $12 for a $2 bet. A “$2 Exacta Box 3-4-5” means any two of the three horses must finish first and second, in any order.

QUINELLA: Pick the top two finishers in any order in the race. Example: “$2 Quinella 1-2” means the one and two horses finishes first and second in any order.

QUINELLA BOX: Choose more than two horses for a Quinella box. For example, a three-horse box (three wagers) would cost

$6, a four-horse box (six wagers) costs $12 and a five-horse box (10 wagers) costs $20. Of those horses selected, two of them must finish first and second, in any order.

SUPERFECTA: Pick the top four finishers in a race in the exact order.

TRIFECTA: Pick the top three finishers in the exact order. Example: “$2 Trifecta 7-8-9” means the seven horse must finish first, the eight horse must finish second and the nine horse must finish third.

TRIFECTA BOX: The Trifecta Box includes every possible combination that could result from the selected horses. Example: “$2 Trifecta box 4-5-6”, means those three horses must finish first, second and third in any order. The $2 bet would cost $12. A $2 fourhorse Trifecta box costs $48 and a $2 five-horse Trifecta box costs $120.

TWIN TRIFECTA: Like the daily double, this bet involves two races designated as “Twin Trifecta” in the race program. To win, the bettor must pick the first, second and third place finishers in exact order in the first half of the designated race. After the first race is declared official and before the second race is run, the bettor exchanges the winning ticket and selects the first three horses in the exact order of the second race of the “Twin Trifecta”.

Head to the betting window and give the teller this information: For example, say: “In the first race, I would like $2 to Win on number one.” or “In the second race, I would like a $2 Exacta with 7-2.”
