Congratulations!

You’ve decided to move to the Sparkling City by the Sea!

Corpus Christi

is a beautiful, inviting, scenic place to live. If you’ve ever moved before, you know how stressful of an event it can become. Boxes, breakables, and billing address changes... we know moving can be a little overwhelming. This is why we took some time to compile a checklist to help you get organized. Getting a plan of action removes much of the stress from any situation, but is absolutely essential when it comes to a big move! Keep your eyes on the prize! Corpus Christi’s beaches are the perfect place to relax and unwind after a taxing project. Before we get started, let’s get a Move Binder together. This will be your go-to resource for all things moving!

Things to include in your Move Binder: Estimates from three licensed moving companies with great reviews from the Better Business Bureau. A print out of your rights and responsibilities as you work with the moving company from protectyourmove.gov. Any extra insurance coverage information regarding your move - check your homeowner’s policy to see what coverage you may already have. Bank information, Doctor’s contact info, and any relevant school records. List of businesses to contact with your address change information (don’t forget your online accounts!). Room by room packing schedule.

16

CORPUS CHRISTI RELOCATION & NEWCOMERS GUIDE • 2016

6 WEEKS before the move • Go through each room in your current house to decide what to keep, sell, donate, and trash. Pack up seasonal items and things not regularly used (decorations, kitchen gadgets, etc). • If you have children in school, coordinate with their current and future schools about transferring records. • Slow down on the grocery shopping. • If you’re not getting them through your moving company, purchase your moving supplies: Boxes, packing material, tape, labels, box cutters, and markers. • Decide on a box- labeling system, we like color coding by room, and numbering the order in which they should be opened at the new house. (#1 would be last). • Make a master list of the box-labeling system to keep in your Move Binder.

4 WEEKS before the move • Change your address using the official form on usps.com. • Put that address-change list to work! Call family, friends, and businesses who would need your new info. • Schedule the appropriate time off at work and schedule a babysitter if needed. Confirm all details with movers and insurance. Keep records in your move binder. Cancel your utilities. • Arrange for transportation of your valuables either by hand, or with an insured, trackable shipping service.

2 Weeks before the move

Day of the Move

• Perform an inventory and photo/video documentation of your

• Be sure to have your Move Binder, cash, credit card (in case of emergency), and valuables. Dress comfy for your trip.

higher-ticket items, noting any existing damages. • Confirm your moving transportation. • Dispose of any hazardous materials (paint, unwanted cleaners, etc). • No slackin’ on the packin’! 14 days goes by quickly, and you won’t want to have the extra stress the week of your move! • Leave a packet with any necessary information for the new owners of your home. • Transfer medical records and make sure everyone’s needed

• Be sure to bring sunscreen, and beachwear in your suitcases if you plan to go to the beach soon after your move!

Once you arrive at your new home

medications are ready to move.

• Locate all of your essentials and get organized.

1 Week before the move

• Explore the area, see our Culture / Recreation section for exciting events taking place in Corpus Christi.

• Back up all computers. • Each family member should pack as if they’re going on a 2 week vacation. • Pack some snacks and waters for your trip! • Re-confirm arrival date and time with moving company - exchange appropriate contact information. • Celebrate all the memories you’ve made in your home and get ready for your new chapter in Corpus Christi!

• Check out The Taste Local Menu Guide for awesome local restaurants to try! • You’ll need to update your driver's license. For info on how to do that, check out the helpful information in our Government / Resources section. • For more information about helpful resources and moving tips, try ForRent.com and goodhousekeeping.com.

Crossing the Harbor Bridge to see the Texas State Aquarium gets me so excited because I know I’ll see the dolphins, Shadow and Kai put on their show. The Science & History Museum is always great because they bring their exhibits to life. I get to touch things to see how they work; and they have actors who take me back in time! Dad got us passes to Schlitterbahn this year, so I’ll see my friends there and hang out in my inner tube! Sometimes we love to visit Bob Hall Pier, go out on a fishing boat, or go see the sailboats downtown.

We always have a great time in the great outdoors! My mom knows all the best food trucks and lunch spots around town. Yummy food is everywhere and after a long day in the sun, we sometimes eat at one of the cool new restaurants. There’s spaghetti, pizza, tacos - everything I like to eat. Oh and the seafood is always so tasty! I guess it’s because they catch the fish right here. My favorite thing to do is ride my bike and play outside. The sun is always shining and we live near the water, so we’re always fishing, swimming and splashing around. My school has a program that takes us out of the classroom to get involved with nature. And by the way, nature is everywhere! We go places like South Texas Botanical Gardens, King Ranch, and Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. My parents say some kids today don’t play outside, but there’s so much to see and explore near our home! We go camping, hiking, and boating, all at local parks and beaches. I’ve seen lizards, pelicans, sea turtles, sting rays, whooping cranes, and lots of other neat animals. My favorite is the Great Blue Heron!

I know other kids would like it here, because Corpus Christi is the best! All my friends think so too!

CULTURE / RECREATION

SPORTS South Texans love

the great outdoors, whether we are fishing, hunting, birding, enjoying water-sports, or working on a tan - outside is the place to be in Corpus Christi. Corpus Christi is located in Nueces County, where there are many different types of game for hunting. Alligator, Dove, Quail, Whitetail Deer, Hogs, Javelinas, and many types of waterfowl make for fun trips and lots of variety for the avid hunter. With all these varied species, there are also many different hunting seasons and license requirements. For up-todate information on all regulations and places where you can purchase your hunting license, visit tpwd.texas.gov. South Texas is also home to some of the best fishing around. Whether you’re offshore on a deep sea fishing trip, cruising your boat for redfish in the bay, or bringing you rod and reel out to the beach, you’re sure to find a great catch and a good time. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife website, trout and flounder can be found in the Oso Bay; fishermen seem to get the most of these using Gulps and Corkies. Redfish in the Humble Channel like crabs and table shrimp. Bring your Gulps and DOA Shrimp to the edge of the flats and you’re almost sure to find yourself some nice trout. Fishing licenses are required for Texans over the age of 17. Fishing licenses are not required if you are fishing from the bank in a state park or in waters completely enclosed in the state park. The first Saturday of every June is Free Fishing Day! No person is required to have a fishing license while fishing on that day. For a complete list of fishing license requirements, regulations, and exceptions, visit tpwd.texas.gov. Surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing, sailing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, much of what Corpus Christians like to do is getting out on the water! Never done any of these? Don’t have the proper equipment? No worries! There are plenty of places to get lessons, and lots of vendors who will rent their equipment to help you get started.
