“Heart Matters - A loving heart” From Pastor Randy Weaver According to the musical wisdom of John, Paul, George, and Ringo … “All you need is love, love … love is all you need.” Well, that and food, shelter, air, water and sleep. Love is literally in the air. You hear that word everywhere. It’s been the subject of plays and novels and poems, debated and discussed by philosophers and artists, intellectuals, and religious scholars throughout the ages. You can’t turn on the TV or the radio without hearing the word “love.” And yet, there isn’t a more slippery word in the English language. And in my opinion, more misused. We use it to describe how we feel about everything from pizza and ice cream to our families and friends even God. We often think of love as some sweet, tingly and sentimental feeling. It is commanded in the bible to: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” When it comes to matters of the heart, love runs much deeper than burgers, fries and apple pies. Jesus placed great value on everyone regardless of his or her standing in the community. The Biblical definition of love is found in 1Corinthians 13:4-8 ~ “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. “ The Apostle John would wholeheartedly agree. The Biblical demonstration of love is found in John 3:16 ~ “For God so loved the world
that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Biblical or divine love is a self-sacrificing, caring commitment that shows itself in seeking the highest good for the one being loved. Biblical love is not self-seeking. At its heart, Biblical love is a commitment with, or even without feeling, a caring commitment that involves delight, not just duty. This caring commitment is not just an attitude but also an action. It shows itself in deeds. These deeds often require self-sacrifice. However, our main source of fulfillment should come from experiencing God’s love, apart from our response to that love. The ultimate demonstration of that kind of self-sacrificing commitment and love was seen at the cross on Calvary. The response will naturally follow when we acknowledge and experience God’s love. In John 4:7 he commands us to “love one another” and then gives us the “WHY” for this command: “because love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” Then the Apostle gives us the supreme example of the kind of love that comes from God: “God’s love was revealed among us in this way: God sent His only Son into the world so that we might live through Him” (v. 9) “In this is love … not that we loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins” (v. 10). Love is from God. I have seen unbelievers demonstrate sacrificial love for others. Unbelieving parents often sacrificially love their children. An unbelieving husband
Cowboy Sports News Page 6 - August 2019
or wife may sacrifice for their mates over the course of their marriage. Unbelieving soldiers may lay down their lives for their comrades. What they may not know, but John knows is that these loving deeds stem from God’s common grace. Whenever we see genuine Biblical love, it did not originate with that person. It came from God, whether an unbeliever acknowledges it or not or is aware of that fact. God is the only source of true love in the universe. “God is Love.” John 1:5 states: “… God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.” And he describes God as righteous. John’s point is that children take on the characteristics of their parents. If we have been born of God, who is love, and we have come to know Him and follow Him, then we
will be acting and growing in Biblical love. So yes, all we need is love, as long as it is God’s love. Grow in God’s love today and embrace the truest nature of being a Christian – “to love God and to love your neighbor as yourself.” Pastor Randy Weaver Lone Star Cowboy Church 21627 Eva St. Montgomery, TX 77356 (936) 597-5742 Service Times: Sundays 8:30; 10am & 11:30am Mondays 7:00pm Livestream: Watch us live Sundays & Mondays @ lonestar.tv or go to the Lone Star Cowboy Church Facebook page and click on the Livestream link.

Big Al’s View Of The World
Well, it’s nice to see that some people still read my article. I didn’t have an article last month and more than just my wife and son noticed. I appreciate everyone that took the time to ask why I didn’t write anything last month and stated how much they missed it. Last month was a blur. For some reason my days are flying by here lately. Maybe it’s the 50 thing or maybe I’m just not paying attention like I used to. It could be life in general. It could be a combination of them all. It also wasn’t just my article that I missed out on. To get to the point: I put 18 gallons of gas in my diesel truck. Talk about not paying attention and life being a blur. That’ll wake you up. I had been driving my wife’s car for almost a week. In that week we had put quite a few miles on the thing and I had pumped more than a tank of gas into it. It was the first day I had been back in my truck. I went to town early to get me some Whataburger (why not). I pulled into the Wal-Mart station just a few minutes after 7 in the morning. I had no sleep in my eyes. I wasn’t tired. I was happy to be back in town and get things rolling
R&M Rodeo Photos
after being gone for a week. I was in the best of moods and my belly was full of the best Whataburger had to offer. And then it all changed! While the pump was running I cleaned the Whataburger and Prasek’s cups from my back seat as I do every time I get diesel. I cleaned the old napkins out of my doors and then for some reason a little light bulb went off in my head. I looked over at the pump and saw the green handle still in its place and my whole attitude changed. At first I couldn’t believe what I had done. I’ve been driving diesels for over 20 years and never once even come close to doing this. Thank goodness it was 7am in the morning and not lunch time. There was basically no one around for me to get in the way of. I looked in the back of my truck and found a 20’ chain but it had no hooks on the ends of it. What the hell good is a chain with no hooks and how did it get in my truck???? The guy getting fuel next to me said he would pull me out of the way if I could find a chain so I ran inside Wal-Mart and bought a 20’ tow strap and ran back out. He pulled me over into the empty parking lot and alone I was. Thank goodness my wife was close enough that she came and got

me and left her car. I called around and found a shop that could get me in after lunch. Now to get it to the shop. I had to call a wrecker to haul it over there. To make a long story short, by 2pm I had my truck back and my wallet was lighter by $370. That figure doesn’t even include the $40 of gas that I put in my truck that the shop said I couldn’t have back. They claimed it was in their scrap barrel. I’m pretty sure they are using it to mow their lawn about right now. The same thing I had in mind for it. Lesson learned!!! You can bet I’m like an astronaut doing a check list before take-off now every time I pull up to the pump. Church signs and life lessons I’ve told y’all about this church in Bellville that has a sign out front. They put a new message up every week. The other day I came by and it said, “Don’t talk about people, talk to them.” I thought that was pretty cool. Just so happened later that day I had an hour long conversation with a person from my past. By the time we parted company I had a full change of heart on this person. It seems the sign was right. I bet if we sat down with even our worst enemies we would find some common thing that we both feel passionate about. There is always that one thing that you can connect with. Not everyone reads the Bible. Some of us just read a sign as we drive past. You never know what kind of “sign” might hit you at the right time in your life. Keep reading, especially the diesel and gas part.
Still embarrassed, Big Al’

PANEL WALKER The most advanced horse walker on the market. Unlike traditional walkers, the Priefert Panel Walker eliminates the need to tie your horses to the walker so they’re able to move about more freely and naturally. Panel walkers "push" the horse instead of "pulling" it. Horses that have never been in a walker before become trained to use the walker instantly. Available in 4, 6, or 8 horse configurations. Twice Good 2x THSRA Champion Bradi Good
JenningsRodeoPhotography.com By Krista Lucas Winning back to back state titles is a feat not many can say they have accomplished. It is an especially tough achievement in the Texas High School Rodeo Association, where the competition is stiff and there are young cowboys and cowgirls from 10 regions competing against each other. Only a select few can say they have won a state title, let alone two. The THSRA state finals are held every summer in Abilene, Texas, and hometown cowgirl Bradi Good had a successful week. She won the first round of barrel racing and then took second place in round two. She also won the short go, improving on her round two time, to walk away with the state barrel racing championship.
Good was a repeat champion, winning the title in 2018 and 2019. “Winning state back to back was like a dream come true,” Good said. “I owe it all to the horse that I’m grateful to get a chance to ride. Junior, owned by Judi Reed, absolutely
Good and Junior left it all out there every single run, and it paid off. The duo gets to make a return trip to Rock Springs, Wyoming for the National High School Rodeo Association finals, where last year they left reserve national champions. “I definitely had that
national title. Now I get the chance to do that.” Good knows if she does her job, Junior will do his like he always does and work like a champ. Good was also the 2019 THSRA Girl’s All Around Champion, by competing in barrel racing and breakaway roping. She has grown up around rodeo and has spent hours in the practice pen. Her hard work and dedication to the sport is reaping rewards. “Growing up in a rodeo family has always kept me close to the sport,” Good said. “My brother and I grew up riding and eventually started competing at a young age. I won my first saddle when I was five years old in the six and under, and ever since then I was hooked.” She was always entered in multiple events, quickly becoming an all around cowgirl, but as she got older, Good narrowed it down to competing in barrel racing and breakaway roping. “As much as I love barrel racing, my favorite event I compete in would have to be the breakaway roping, probably because I spend most of my time practicing that event,” she said. “When I’m home, I try and rope every day, on more than one horse usually.” Before she left for Abilene and another THSRA championship, Bradi made a stop in Saginaw at the Windy Ryon Memorial Roping, picking up the championship in the breakaway. The Windy Ryon is one of the most prestigious breakaway ropings during the-

cessful rodeo athlete to look up to in the family. Her father, Shay Good, is a professional steer roper and is currently ranked 13th in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world standings with just over $19,000 won. Shay has qualified for the National Finals Steer Roping three times, from 2015-2017. “My dad helps me out the most. He’s in the practice pen every day, helping me out with whatever I need. He has taught me everything I know and still teaches me things to this day,” Good said. “Although he rodeos professionally, he always makes time for me whether it be in the practice pen, driving to the next rodeo or helping me out in the box. If it wasn’t for my dad, I wouldn’t be where I am today.” Although rodeo is her first love, her athleticism has carried over to the basketball and volleyball courts. Most people may not know that when she attended public school, she was on varsity teams as a freshman and has also been

awarded honors such as 2017 District 4 4A Newcomer of the Year and 2018 District 4 4A first team all district in volleyball, and 2018 District 4 4A Defensive Most Valuable Player in basketball. Among other accolades, Good also holds the Elite Futurity Champion title, the reserve champion Texas Youth Circuit Finals Barrel Racing title, the 2018 Junior National

and rodeo for whatever school I end up going to. I would like to be able to do school and pro rodeo at the same time, especially since breakaway is making such huge advancements in the rodeo industry,” she said. “Hopefully, by the time I get up there I will be able to compete
would like to thank each and every family member, friend and sponsor for helping her in and out of the arena. Who knows, Good may be one of the first cowgirls to qualify for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in two events. She is optimistic both barrel racing and breakaway roping can be included in her future plans. “I plan to go to college
in two events at the Thomas & Mac in Las Vegas.” Before the west Texas cowgirl will see her name in the college and professional ranks, she will have one more year to defend her THSRA state titles. Texas sends some of the toughest competition to nationals every year, and with Good running down the alley, 2019 is no different.

In The Spotlight With Sunny B’ This month while the trail is heating up going into our summer run, I was able to steal a few minutes with the 2017/2018 CPRA Champion Steer Wrestler, Cade Staton to see how rodeo life of a newlywed with 2 children and 1 on the way works for a steer wrestler! Sunny: Tell us how you got your start in rodeo? Cade: I have always grown up around it with my Mom & Dad. I went to youth rodeos while I was young then decided I wanted to play baseball. I spent most of high school years doing just that. Sunny: How did you know you wanted to get back into the rodeo arena? Sunny: How did you know you wanted to get back into the rodeo arena? Cade: I went to Alvin Community
College my freshmen year of college on a baseball scholarship. I finished that year and decided my heart was really back in the rodeo arena. I went home got my ducks in a row and headed to Wharton County Jr. College on a rodeo scholarship. Sunny: What horse did you ride in college? Cade: I had a bay horse named George that was supposed to be
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
a barrel horse and really never got started. The first semester I rode George I don’t think I got one steer thrown down! A friend had asked me if I would sale George so later on George went on to be sold to PRCA steer wrestler, Rowdy Parrot. I brought out my backup horse, Casper and today I am still riding my yellow horse Casper. He was also a barrel horse that didn’t make it.
brought the girls to the rodeo to meet me. Courtney is 7 almost 8 and Ryan is 6. They are a joy for the whole family. I also gained a whole other family and they have been supportive in helping Katherine and I with the girls if we need them or for anything. I feel so blessed and of course my parents help out as well. Sunny: What do you do in your spare time on the road? Cade: I love to play golf and go eat a good steak
Sunny: Cade who do you think has been the biggest help in finding your horsepower? Cade: Definitely both my parents, but my mom, Janet Staton has always had a keen eye for great horses. She is a good cowgirl and a great horseman. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her & my
dad. They have always supported me 100% in whatever I wanted to do, be it baseball or rodeo. I still won’tbuy a horse today without my moms opinion. Sunny: Tell us about married life? Cade: Wow! It was different at first, but now I can’t see it any other way! We decided to wait till we knew where our relationship was going before I met Katherine’s daughters. After a few months she
Sunny: Let’s shift gears. What is a good practice session like for a steer wrestler? Cade: In order to have a good session I like to have at least 5 people in the arena helping me. Someone to haze, work the gate, get their head in the chute so I can get the best possible go at that steer I can get to make a quality run and have a good practice. You need good people who are intense and know how to get you fired up. Bill Pace is great to have in the practice pen. He is very intense and can get you fired up! I love that. Sunny: Who has been your biggest mentor and supporter do you think? Cade: No doubt my dad, Doug Staton. I remember trucks and trailers parked everywhere at our house each week. It was a way of life. One day my dad said warm this horse up. I loped him and warmed him up and then he walked over and told me a couple of things to do like bend my knees and turn
around in the saddle. Then he said, “okay back him in there, you’re gonna run this one.” He definitely laid the foundation for me today. I got down on that steer that first day and the rest is history I was definitely hooked knowing this was my destiny I will say. Sunny: What is your biggest accomplishment to date? Cade: Definitely winning the Texas Circuit Finals and making The Dodge Circuit Finals. I have also been a CPRA Champion and I also support the UPRA rodeos. They are great rodeos to travel to and I will continue to go to them and try to make the finals at each one. Sunny: Where will Cade Staton be in 5 years? C a d e : Probably at youth rodeos, barrel races, cheerleading and dance practices. If I can fit entering a rodeo in from time to time I will and if not I will be fine with that too. I remember reading an article when my dad won a round at Austin at the Pro Rodeo. He said he loved to rodeo but he had 2 boys at home and he would be just as good at being home with them. That has stuck with me and I feel the same way about my girls. I have been blessed with a great job. I am in sales for Arnold Oil. They have allowed me to travel in a few days at a time and work from home quite a bit so I can be with my family. I feel extremely blessed. Sunny: Do you see yourself going to the NFR? Cade: That was the plan but the way the PRCA limits the entries now it makes it too hard to get to the bigger rodeos. I will enter the Texas Circuit rodeos and continue to enter CPRA & UPRA rodeos. If it works out fine and if not I would just as soon be home with my family. Sunny: Cade what would you like for people to know about you? Cade: I think some people get the impression I am hard, but the truth is I am just a big ol’ Teddy Bear. If you knew me you would see that. Sunny: I have always felt like you were a teddy bear!

WORLD CHAMPIONS RODEO ALLIANCE ANNOUNCES 2020 SCHEDULE 2020 Schedule will Feature Over $5,000,000 In Payouts The 2020 schedule for the World Champions Rodeo Alliance (WCRA) begins a stretch-run that will see the world’s top rodeo athletes battling it out for their piece of the $5,000,000 in total purse. Each one-day $1,000,000 WCRA Major Rodeo will be coupled with a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) elite series event in a major U.S. market. The 2020 schedule includes four major rodeos beginning at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri followed by a late-May early-June soon to be announced location. WCRA will then return to Salt Lake City, Utah for the multi-performance Days of ’47 Cowboy Games and Rodeo and wrap up at the Tacoma Dome in Tacoma, Washington. The first one-day $1,000,000 WCRA Major Rodeo of 2020 will be hosted on February 28 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri - The WCRA Royal City Round Up. This WCRA Major Rodeo will be preceded by a timed events semi-final in Guthrie, Oklahoma at the legendary Lazy E Arena, January 8-12 and a rough stock semi-finals event at the Lewis Feild Bulls & Broncs February 7-8 at Mavrick Center in Salt Lake City. These two semi-finals events combined will award a guaranteed purse of $500,000. “We are excited about announcing this 2020 schedule so early in the year,” said WCRA President Bobby Mote. “We have experienced rapid growth with the Virtual Rodeo Qualifier and it is evident that we are positively impacting the sport of Rodeo.” Additionally, tie-down ropers will compete for a total of $161,000 purse at the Royal City Roundup, which includes $50,000 carried over from the Title Town Stampede as a result of no qualified times during the showdown round in Green Bay, Wisconsin. In support of the new February Kansas City event, Mote says WCRA will also move the previously scheduled October 2019 semi-finals to a later date that is closer to the newly selected major. “This extension of the nomination period will only benefit all rodeo athletes to earn more points and qualify for the Royal City Round Up,” Mote said. The WCRA will then return to the Lazy E Arena for a
$500,000 spring semi-finals May 13-17 where athletes in all disciplines will again compete for eight positions at the late-May early-June TBA $1,000,000 major. For the third year in a row, WCRA will revisit the $17.5-million-dollar Days of ’47 outdoor arena July 20-24 for the Days of ’47 Cowboy Games & Rodeo. The top WCRA Athletes on the leaderboard will

have the chance to win a gold medal along with a piece of the $1,125,000 payout at the Salt Lake City event. Tacoma, Washington will play host to the final major of 2020 when the inaugural WCRA Puget Sound Showdown takes place on August 28 at the Tacoma Dome. The world’s best will compete for more than $111,000 per discipline, with the champions walking away with a minimum of $50,000 each. For our major events, it’s a balancing act between the best interest of the athlete, the sport, and the fans,” said Mote. “The move to Kansas City is a result of our effort
to develop a seasonal approach to our qualification platform and host all events in the series in the same calendar year.” Athletes from around the globe have the opportunity to compete in the WCRA Major Events Series after qualifying through the WCRA Virtual Rodeo Qualifier (VRQ). All rodeo athletes interested in learning more about the VRQ should be directed to wcrarodeo. com. Since launching in May of 2018, the WCRA and its partners have awarded more than $4,565,000 in new money to rodeo athletes.

Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Head Horses Getting Strong in the Corner Recently I’ve purchased a few really nice-looking big and stout head horses. Their owners were not getting along with them because they were ducking hard and felt out of control. There are many reasons head horses start getting strong in the corner. You need to figure out whether it’s the saddle, the pads, or maybe pilot error where the rider is squeezing with the right leg and leaving the left leg open. Possibly it’s because they’ve roped big steers that got heavy and the horse is trying to get ahead of the jerk. Low number headers often unintentionally use the bridle reins for balance. This teaches your horse to run through the bridle, meaning they don’t respond when you pull on them and they have to “run through your hand”
to get to the cow. When you engage your bridle reins your horse should not get closer to the cow. He should be slowing down. If you have contact with the reins and are pulling, you should be getting further away from the cow. I see it sometimes when I video my clients. They engage the reins when they’re still 20 feet from the cow. The horse continues to run and has learned to run through the bridle to get to his spot. This results in your horse having a “hard mouth” and teaches him not to respond. When you slow a video down and watch it frame by frame, pilot error becomes obvious. You can see everything that’s happening during a team roping run. It’s much easier to see if the riders’ legs and hands are in the correct position. When Dustin Egusquiza started coming over a few months ago, I put him on the Speed Trainer. When he was reaching he looked outstanding. But up close he really struggled with trying not to light
Improve faster with realistic practice using the new Speed Trainer
it up using the bridle reins. Up close he was actually splitting the horns because he had never really worked on his close game much. It sure didn’t take him long to figure out how to kick with one leg and rope in under two seconds without lighting it up. But in the beginning he made the buzzer go off a lot. As an instructor who gives lessons as a profession, it’s been incredibly exciting to show people how to improve their roping and go through all the steps correctly while sitting still. Sitting still on the Speed Trainer, they are able to concentrate and isolate what they need to work much easier and faster. Then, when they get on their horse it’s easier to use their left leg and not pull on the reins when they don’t need to. I’m not saying you don’t ever need to engage the reins, but make sure you’re pulling out of necessity and not out of habit. It’s very hard to improve your roping if your left hand and your feet are not helping you ride and control your horse properly. This also affects heelers and it’s just as important they use their left hand and legs correctly.
What’s new with me: A
few years ago, we sold our place in DeLeon, Texas and moved to Center, Texas to work with Terry Bailey who built an unbelievable roping and equestrian facility. Terry later had a fatal accident in his helicopter. Two weeks after closing on our place in DeLeon we were homeless and moved to Orange, Texas and stayed with Chad Havens for a few months before Hurricane Harvey hit. It was then Roy Gene Evans called my wife and offered to lease us his indoor arena in Santo, Texas. We’ve taught lessons there for close to two years while looking for a place of our own. Thanks to the generosity of these two friends, it gave us time to look for a home. We were fortunate to close on 70 acres in Comanche, Texas with a house, hay barn, ten pastures, coastal field, and lots of water, grass, and trees – and sand like Florida. We finally found a place to call home and all four of us love it. I want to thank my wife for being patient because I took my time looking. We looked at many places and found a couple but ultimately they fell through for one reason or another. I think this is the place we were meant to find and we’re happy to be home.

Dee & Siggins win BFI and $120k Photos Courtesy of Olie’s Images The flag at the 42nd Annual Bob Feist Invitational on June 24 was still moving at the end of the final run of 7.2 seconds when 26-year-old Lane Siggins began racing around the arena to celebrate the resulting $120,000 cash prize with partner Junior Dees, 21. The Arizona boys finally vaulted off their moving horses to throw their arms around each other. “I felt like we were 9 seconds on that run, and when the announcer said 7, my hat just came off,” Siggins said later. “I’ve been practicing to win the BFI at my house since I was 5 years old. I was ready for that victory lap!” The first-place prize at the BFI in Reno, Nevada, often marks the biggest win of a roper’s life. The anchor event of Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti, it’s held in conjunction this year with the 100th anniversary of the Reno Rodeo. The BFI is the most lucrative but challenging team roping event for professionals in America. Under the traditional format, the 100 best teams in the world are invited to rope six fast steers over
an 18-foot head start, for a purse of more than $600,000 in cash and prizes. A new award this year for the overall fastest time in the first five rounds was given in memory of former BFI champion and three-time fast-time winner Rickey Green. It went to Tyler Wade and Billie Jack Saebens, who clocked a 4.57 to win the third round. Over five steers, Dees and Siggins became the high callback team, and would compete last. They watched six straight teams make clean runs, and needed an 8.47 for the aggregate win. Their 7.2 edged the six-head time of Oklahoma ropers Cale Markham and Brye Crites by about a second. Crites, 25, said he’ll pay off his trailer with his portion of the $90,000 he won with Markham, 28. Crites works full-time in an in vitro fertilization lab in Welch, while Markham’s family produces ropings and has Animal Health Supply Inc., in Vinita. Interviewed in the arena immediately after the celebration, Siggins said that Dees had just made him a superstar. In fact, this
Cowboy Sports News Page 58 - August 2019
was just Dees’ second time in the BFI, but Siggins had been entering it since he was a teenager. “As someone who grew up jackpotting, it’s been tough to never get past the first steer here,” said Siggins. “But Junior and I have chemistry. There’s no heat roping with him; no pressure. And we’re on the same page financially – if we don’t win, we have to go home. Thanks to John Thompson of Thompson Carriers for paying our entry fees.” The Siggins family makes a living near Coolidge, Arizona, riding, training and selling roping horses. When Dees arrived at their house last fall, it was to further his own career riding and training horses. By March, he and Lane had become fast friends and began to enter rodeos together. “We just click,” said Dees. “We get along; he’s like a brother to me. We just have fun and have had luck together.” Dees spent his early childhood in Arizona, too, before cutting his teeth as a roper in South Dakota. In fact, during the BFI he was on the phone with his mentor, three-time NFR heeler
Matt Zancanella, after every steer. Siggins got a little remote coaching, too, from “Zanc” after missing the haze on the first BFI steer. “I’ve wanted to win this all my life,” said Dees, who basically grew up on the arena floor at places like the BFI, watching Zancanella compete. The Zancanella family also raised the horse Dees credits with his big win. Famous Dillon was sired by their barrel-racing stallion Lion’s Share of Fame – a full brother to Gun Battle, a racehorse with a speed index of 110. “Dillon” had a half-brother on which Dees qualified for the NFR in 2017, but the horse suffered a career-ending injury last year. Just 8 years old, Dillon went to his first rodeo this spring. On the other hand, Siggins’ gray 12-year-old gelding, “Shooter,” is a veteran and performed so well that he won the annual Heel Horse of the BFI award from Montana Silversmiths. Registered as Amigos Sonita Las, he has foundation cowhorse breeding. “Tanner Baldwin trained him, and I’ve had him three years now,” said Siggins, who tweaked

his roping style to fit the horse. “I have always liked a tighter feel, to where I need to kick a horse up, but he is so free-rolling that I needed to change a little. I mostly watched Ryan Motes to learn his style, since his horses never take his throw away.” Motes’ horse, incidentally, was the 2014 Heel Horse of the BFI. On the fresh steers in Reno, many horses anticipate the stop and cause heelers to miss their shot, hurry their delivery or struggle to dally. But Shooter is honest every time. In fact, Siggins asked Dees to make sure and face on a tight rope to prevent any slipped legs. On the other end, Riley Minor won his record fourth Head Horse of the BFI award, courtesy of his defending PRCA/AQHA Head Horse of the Year, RK Tuff Trinket (“Bob”). Minor and his brother, Brady, were winning this year’s BFI after four steers with a 29.61, but a leg penalty in the fifth round dropped them to 10th callback. Bob also won the award in 2016, when the Minors placed sixth. “I got this horse five years ago and he’s been the greatest blessing in my life,” Minor said. “This award means a lot here with
Smith & Higgins Win $200k this long score and hard-running cattle. Today, he scored so good that we should have been high call.” Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti continues for three days following the 42ND BFI. For more information, visit www. bfiweek.com.
Above: School teacher Jody Higgins of Monroe, Louisiana, and his horse-trading friend Mark Smith of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, teamed up at the last minute to split $200,000 in the Wrangler National Patriot #11.5 roping in Reno, Nevada.

On June 27, the top five from Wrangler BFI Week’s 2019 Charlie 1 Horse event at the same venue roped in that night’s Reno Rodeo for a winnertake-all cash prize of $1,000 put up by Hooey Brands and the Reno Rodeo just after the tie-down roping. The landmark move comes just two years after Reno’s All-Girl Team Roping – held since the 1990s in conjunction with the Bob Feist Invitational – added a breakaway event and started the trend sweeping professional rodeo. Soon thereafter, RFD-TV’s The American rodeo followed suit, as did a handful of PRCA rodeos and the WCRA. “It’s so cool,” said Jackie Crawford, a 14-time world champion in the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) from Stephenville, Texas. “I love that these big rodeos are giving girls another event that’s fast-paced and uses some of the same skills as the guys.” In Reno, Crawford had roped three calves in 7.89 seconds to win the Charlie 1 Horse Breakaway Challenge and $7,000 cash plus the custom Cactus trophy saddle, buckle, and plethora of other
BFI Week prizes. She clocked the fastest time of the short round – a 2.3-second run – despite a calf that ducked right. “I’ve been one out of the money a lot lately, so I’ve been working on being aggressive,” she said. “Breakaway is getting so tough that you cannot back off – not if you want to win – but even if you want to place anymore. I had to hit that start and get it on him.” She led the top five into the Reno Rodeo that night and roped last. Her longtime nemesis, fellow world champ Lari Dee Guy of Abilene, Texas, was leading for the $1,000 with a 3.9-second run when Crawford thrilled the crowd with a 3.8 to win the prize. Prior to the Charlie 1 Horse Breakaway, Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti had kicked off in Reno on June 22, and was anchored by the 42 nd Annual Bob Feist Invitational
(BFI) on June 24. One of the main highlights of the week was the Charlie 1 Horse All-Girl Challenge team roping. Annually the richest open all-female team roping in the country, it was live-streamed on www.wranglernetwork.com. A pair of Navajo “sisters” made the 12-hour drive from Arizona to Reno to out-rope nearly 160 teams in that event by just one-hundredth of a second to earn $26,000 cash and BFI Week’s legendary prizeline. Debbie Robbins of Winslow and Danielle Lowman of Mesa, both No. 5 ropers, roped their first three steers in 24.58 seconds to lead the pack into the short round by almost two seconds. Despite a penalty on the fourth steer, they squeaked into first place in the aggregate on four over Alabama’s Beverly Robbins and Jesse Remsburg. Beverly Robbins

(no relation to Debbie), also placed fourth with another partner to earn a Reno total of $9,688. “I wanted that buckle here,” said Debbie Robbins. “And I’m going to ride that saddle.” She and Lowman share a grandmother and grew up about 45 minutes away from each other. “Before we came out here, I told her, this time let’s not practice as hard as we usually do,” said Lowman, 26, a four-time Indian National Finals Rodeo qualifier. “‘Let’s go over there and just win it all and come back.’” Debbie Robbins, then, didn’t rope at all in the week leading up to the event. She grew up roping sheep at her grandmother’s house on the Navajo reservation. Since then, she’s become an Indian National Finals Rodeo breakaway champion and the 2007 WPRA world all-around champion. “I’d say our practice runs worked out pretty well here today,” Debbie said. “This is a good roping – all the tough girls are here.” Danielle sometimes works in construction and competes in rodeos for a living, while Debbie takes care of her dad and rides and trains several horses a day. She practices on Corriente cattle that she and her brothers and cousins raise and contract to rodeos. “BFI Week in Reno is a great place to have an all-girl roping,” said Mary Jane Carpenter, marketing director for Charlie 1 Horse’s parent company, Hatco. “Girls’ breakaway and team roping just keeps growing. We love being part of it. The hats have become so fashionable outside the arena, with celebrities like Runaway June being fans, that it’s fun to see them worn in the arena, too.” In 2017, Ullman-Peterson

Events expanded the annual AllGirl team roping to incorporate an Incentive for ladies with lower classifications, when they added the breakaway competition and allaround bonus. This year, they also tweaked the team-roping format to “pick one/draw one.” One such drawn team won the #9 Incentive on three, worth $7,500. Californians Keely Kirkman of Livermore and Chelsey Bushnell of Red Bluff didn’t know each other, and are both classified as #4 ropers. They were clean on all three steers to nail the fifth callback position in the main roping. Their 10-second run in the finals secured third place in the main aggregate, too, for $8,000. Each woman took home $7,750. “I love this incentive,” said Bushnell. “You have a chance to draw some good ropers, and it makes it fun because you get to meet new girls and get to rope more times.” Lowman, riding her heel horse, also placed seventh in the aggregate of the breakaway with a three-head time of 10.04 seconds to win the $2,500 cash bonus and trophy Gist spurs awarded to the Charlie 1 Horse all-around champion during BFI Week. Her total haul in Reno was $17,450, all on a 9-year-old mare she calls Boots that she raised on the Navajo reservation and trained herself. “I just tried to make sure I caught my last calf,” said Lowman. “I was shooting for the all-around bonus. It’s pretty tough to go against Jackie and pull that off. Now I know I can hang with her.” For more information, visit www.bfiweek.com.
Hutton, Bolin win first-ever Cactus #9.5 for $50,000 Former NFR bull rider Ricky Bolin had been the high callback header in the consolation round of the Wrangler National Patriot #11.5 roping on Tuesday and missed. He got retribution on June 26 during the newest addition to Wrangler BFI Week presented by Yeti – the Cactus #9.5 Over 40 – when he and partner Bart Hutton split the first-place prize of $50,000. “This is the most I’ve ever won,” said Hutton, who also roped with Bolin at the World Series Finale in Las Vegas last year. This time, with Bolin on the heel end, the Texans were the high callback team after roping three steers in 30.93 seconds. In the #9.5 Over 40, producers brought every team back to the short round that caught three steers, and that was 12 teams. Every short-round qualifier was guaranteed a paycheck, and just six stopped the clock. Hutton of Boerne and Bolin of Sunnyvale only needed a 12-second run to win the roping, but that’s what had gotten Bolin in trouble the day prior. He’d tried to be too safe. This time, he threw a pretty loop and got one dally before his hand hit the top of his horn and it popped off. The audience took a collective gasp. Bolin was able to re-dally without losing any legs, and the team squeaked into first place by just three-tenths of a second when
they salvaged a 12-flat. “I saw his loop and was already counting the money and didn’t see him lose his dally,” said Hutton, who is a No. 5 header. As for Bolin, the mishap means he will shorten his rope and start tying on from now on, since he’s 60. “I love heeling,” said the #4.5 heeler who rode bulls at four NFRs. “Although I feel like I head better.” Sonny Cowden, 75, of Atwater, California, left Reno with $19,250 out of the Cactus #9.5 Over 40 after placing second with Les Vogt and fifth with Albert Aguayo. Cowden is the father of NFR team ropers Liddon and Cody Cowden. “This is a super roping,” he said. “It gives an old man a chance.” Vogt agreed, and said the addition of the new roping “makes” the entire week for the #4 heeler. “It gives us something to rope in,” he said. Hutton hadn’t entered the team roping events in Reno before, although he’d watched his son compete in the BFI. “This is a hell of a roping, and I’m not just saying that because I won money,” said Hutton, a part-owner of Allcat Claims Service. “When you can come here and rope these good cattle for this much money and get to watch the BFI, too?” He was riding his brand-
new mare, Reba. “I rode her at the Rancheros ride in May and then got her bought from Cathie Twisselman,” Hutton said. “Kelly Barker met me here with her. That short-round steer was about the 10th steer I’ve roped on her.” Bolin was riding a buckskin gelding he raised that he calls Harley, after his late friend Harley May. Hutton and Bolin felt a bit like the home team to viewers of BFI Week because Bolin helms Resistol -- a longtime sponsor of the BFI. As the General Manager of Hatco, which also includes Stetson and Charlie 1 Horse, Bolin will mark 30 years with the company in August. His win marked another important anniversary, as well. It came exactly two years after his open-heart surgery, and he had another minor operation on his heart two weeks prior to Wrangler BFI Week. Despite some side effects of medication, Bolin never missed the horns heading at the World Series jackpots outside town prior to heeling in the Cactus #9.5. His goal had been to win money last year on the anniversary of his life-changing surgery, but he said this victory also worked for that purpose. In the meantime, he spent the week networking with the industry’s many Resistol fans. Another Hatco brand, Charlie 1 Horse, sponsored the All-Girl Challenge during Wrangler BFI Week. “This is our world,” said Bolin. “It’s what we do. This whole week consists of the best team ropings in the world.”
