THE CHADDS FORD BARN SHOPS

I

n decades past, Chadds Ford Barn Shops was a shopping destination. Chadds Ford native Bri Brant is energetically pursuing a dream of reinvigorating that history. “We were the place to stop when one visited Longwood, Winterthur, or the Brandywine River Museum,” Bri said. She and her family took ownership of Chadds Ford Barn Shops earlier this year. “The adorable village layout of the shops is something you don’t see anymore, so we are working to preserve that. Updated lighting, stonework, and landscaping enhance preserved architectural details,” Bri said. As the “Walkable Chadds Ford” initiative progresses, the vision includes walking paths connecting neighboring businesses and open spaces. The Barn Shops’ charming, eclectic mix of historic buildings was created over time. An old general store and a vintage gas station were reborn as artisan retail shops when they were moved here from other spots in town to save them from demolition. The plan is to rejuvenate the locale with a mix of retailers that create a synergy between shops, and with customers. “We are friendly and welcoming, with an artistic and holistic vibe. We work together to attract visitors,” Bri said. Bri is the owner/maker at Arden + James handbags, now located at the Barn Shops. “I have been making and selling bags in stores and online for about ten years. Because my customers appreciate history, authenticity and character, the Chadds Ford Barn Shops is the perfect place for my flagship shop. That’s exactly what this place is all about,” Bri said.

6 C R A V E

“Our family of businesses is already recognized and loved by locals. Barbara Moore, director of the Chadds Ford Gallery for over 40 years, has her own gallery; joined by Green Meadows Florist, Yoga Underground, Chrome Salon, Besoul (a wellness and meditation studio), Lynn Victoria Spa, and Arden + James. A cafe is in the works. The Barn Shops partnered with the Brandywine Conservancy in a holiday kick-off and tree-lighting celebration. “The tree-lighting was a big hit, and the beginning of a new tradition. Our artisan and small business friends love working together to create memorable experiences for the community to share,” Bri said. Look for other seasonal events to follow throughout the year.

SPR INGHOUSE FU R NISHINGS Chadds Ford

T

he custom-made barnwood tables, cupboards, cabinets, sideboards and chairs produced at SpringHouse Furnishings in Chadds Ford call to mind pieces used every day in the homes of our American ancestors. Anne Joyce, the driving force behind SpringHouse, uses her personal collection of early American country furniture, with original finishes and traces of 200-year-old paint intact, to help guide her in authentically recreating many of the pieces made at SpringHouse. Anne became inspired by antique furniture as a child. Her grandfather designed theater sets in Philadelphia and had warehouses filled with of antiques. Other family members designed eclectic style interiors for their restaurants. “I was enchanted,” Anne said. For more than two decades, Anne and her team of craftspeople at SpringHouse Furnishings has designed, built, and finished salvaged antique wood furniture right here in Pennsylvania. They also design kitchens, baths, vanities, floors, built-ins, and more. “We create artful interiors from conception to installation,” Anne said. Her passion for authenticity has reaped rewards. SpringHouse pieces have found their way into television commercials, films, print ads, and have been featured in magazines like Country Living and Coastal Living. Showcased in designer show homes, SpringHouse pieces catch the eye of interior designers for use in restaurants, retail shops, and other commercial spaces.

Well-designed and beautifully crafted, SpringHouse furniture stands apart from imitators. Sturdily constructed from hand-selected, reclaimed, local 18th and 19th century barn wood, each piece is hand-finished using traditional methods and natural oils, pigmented waxes, and handmade milk paints. The result of this painstaking process is furniture that exudes the character and warmth of timeworn wood. In addition to creating custom pieces to buyers’ unique specifications, SpringHouse Furnishings also has a line of beautiful and affordable basics crafted in SpringHouse wood shops from local pine reclaimed from old barns. The Country Cool Collection includes beds, bookcases, dressers, cupboards, hutches, benches, and console tables. If not already in stock, most can be delivered within a month. “Springhouse Furnishings creates one-of-a-kind, forever furniture: handmade, hand-finished, and hand-delivered,” Anne said.

fter 20 years selling antiques in the area, proprietor Lisa Vonderstuck now welcomes visitors to Brandywine View Antiques in its permanent location. “I like to say, ‘Three floors, have fun!’ Lisa said. Surrounded by wellknown gardens, museums, and wineries, Brandywine View Antiques is a magical destination. With 15 rooms and 10,000 square feet of display space, the historic 1807 Federal-style farmhouse is a unique browsing and shopping wonderland. Anyone with a passion for antiques, vintage finds, barn style, concrete, painted furniture, old trunks, farm tables, rustic, timeworn tools, and more will find something to love here. The treasures even spill to the outdoors, where Lisa’s love of garden salvage is evident. “Garden salvage can bring a touch of the outdoors inside,” she said. At, Lisa arranges her collection of vintage wares in stylish vignettes. Each room has a different theme or time period. “I can change the look of a room by adding groups of elements in different styles, like Victorian, French, or Country,” Lisa said. She happily offers on-the-spot styling assistance to shoppers. Design services are also available. Brandywine View Antiques is home to 30 fabulous vendors who show locally sourced, unique, and handmade goods at reasonable prices: painted furniture, hand lettered signs, vintage tools, antique trunks and more. “We have home décor, jewelry, plus my own line of amazing, long-lasting candles. They are big sellers, a favorite with shoppers,” Lisa said. Lisa loves preserving artifacts from the past through upcycling and recycling. Her penchant for hosting ‘pop-up’ barn markets outside her shop led to her founding The Massive Barn Market (coming this spring) with more than 100 vendors, food trucks, and more. “What makes the Barn Market unique, is that nobody can buy or sell until the rope cutting,” Lisa said. “I love to bring people with similar interests together. It’s not just about the antique shop. People come in and just hang out. Regulars come in every week. I guess it can be therapeutic,” Lisa said.

passion for creating and a family trait of entrepreneurship led sisters Emma Leach and Sarah Glatfelter to join with their mother, Monica Herzog, to form New Cottage Designs. The home décor company, based in their hometown of Unionville, PA (Chester County), specializes in handcrafted wooden signs adorned with meaningful quotes about home and life, and artful typography. “Our mother was always a maker, which fostered our creativity to be designers. When we had families, we used those skills as a way to be innovative and work from home,” Emma said. The signs, a blend of farmhouse vintage and urban chic, lend themselves to a variety of popular home decoration styles. A personal connection is evident in every piece. Making signs for friends and family grew into a sustainable family enterprise. They began selling their signs first at local fairs, then at larger retail shows. Soon, the women took their blossoming business to the wholesale level, contracting with sales representatives throughout the United States. “Local shoppers may recognize our signs, but not realize we are running the sign business right here. While we don’t have a retail store, our signs are available at Brandywine View Antiques in Chadds Ford, and Rooted. in New London,” Monica said. “As our business grew, we employed Amish woodworkers to assist us with manufacturing and filling orders. We still touch every sign by hand, but these wonderful craftspeople have become a part of our family,” Sarah said.

Emma, Sarah, and Monica impress onto the family’s next generation their passion for making and entrepreneurship. “Sarah’s daughter, 4-year-old Demi, is a third-generation sign maker, learning the art of the trade. As she grows, we believe she will develop a sense of empowerment, and inspiration to follow her dreams,” Emma said. “My three boys, Luke 12, Dalton, 14, and Cole, 16 eagerly help out with stocking inventory or making deliveries,” she added. “We are passing down to them the same lessons of dedication and initiative we learned from generations before. We are thankful for our supportive families as we nurture and grow our business, from our house to your home,” Emma said.

ocated on State Street, a short walk from the heart of Kennett Square, this Classic American Foursquare mansion sits at the edge of town. The granite inn features classic granite pillars and its wraparound porch is the perfect place to relax at the end the day on rocking chairs. Though built post-Victorian, the inn features separate men’s and ladies parlors, each with their own fireplace. The décor is traditional American with Japanese touches, reflecting owner Gilja Kusano’s heritage. “I added bits of myself to the décor.” Like many traditional foursquares, the home is replete with woodwork, like the beautiful edging on the stairs leading up from the main hall. Guests can relax in the cozy downstairs parlor or in the upstairs sitting area. Her main clientele is business travelers looking for a home away from home and visitors to the areas museums and gardens. Gilja became innkeeper in 2007 and has been wowing guests with her breakfasts ever since. Her French Toast

Guests can choose to eat breakfast with other guests in the main dining room, or enjoy a bit more privacy in the dining nook located off the main room. Four beautifully-appointed guest rooms are decorated to provide a place to relax and unwind. The Brandywine room features a four-poster mahogany bed and the Wyeth room displays Wyeth artwork. ala Galleria is a wonderful art gallery located at 200 East State Street in downtown Kennett Square. Opening the brightly colored yellow door, you will immediately be greeted with a smile and a warm hello from the friendly Mala Galleria owner, Stella Scott. Mala Galleria shows a strong mix of international and local artists, in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, jewelry, woodwork, glasswork and ceramic. There is always something for the eye to savor and many objects that beg to be touched. Every month Mala Galleria celebrates a new featured artist in the main gallery space, and these artist reception events are must-go-to evenings for everyone in town. Full to the brim with artists, art lovers and friends, these First Friday openings are wonderful opportunities to enjoy the art and

people of Kennett Square. Fall 2017 marks Mala Galleria’s 5th Anniversary in town, which was highlighted in September by its move from a very small gallery location, to its new, large bright gallery space. Stella Scott loves being in Kennett Square because “Kennett Square has a soul. Kennett Square is the place where people come together and work together, to make everyone feel welcome. Festivals, old fashioned American parades, Art strolls and fun events are only part of what Kennett Square has to offer. It has many small businesses and keeps them alive and prosperous. I hope it always stays that way!” A native of Serbia, Stella grew up in a Belgrade, a bustling city where art galleries, exhibition spaces and street artists are ever-present. She remembers “There was a small gallery that I admired since I was in my teens, in downtown Belgrade, my home city. It was a space with magical works of many artists. I stopped by it every time I was passing by. I admired the beautiful architecture of the building, the lighting and the spectacular window that always had something new and exciting. This was the place that sparked the idea,

somehow I always thought of that space, throughout my young life, and later, when I moved to the other side of the world.” At Mala Galleria, Stella Scott has created a magical place for us all to enjoy.

f a trip to the Mediterranean is not in the cards, you can still soak up the flavors of a sunny Greek Isle at Estia Restaurant in Philadelphia “Our specialty is whole fish. We fly in a variety of fresh fish from all over Europe, and we prepare it traditionally, very simply,” explained Gus Pashalis, Managing Director for Estia. Estia’s dinner menu includes European sea bass (Lavraki), Royal Dorade fish (Tsipoura), European white snapper (Fagri), and Dover Sole, to name a few. Whole fish entrees can be prepared for one person, or shared. “A group can special order up to a 14-pound fish,” Gus explained. Fish entrees are charcoal-grilled and seasoned with ladolemono, a mixture of lemon juice and extra-virgin olive oil, with a sprinkle of Greek oregano, and capers. On the appetizer menu, Octopus is a signature dish: charcoal-grilled and served over fava puree with pickled red onion, capers and peppers. “Our octopus is from Portugal and has a clean, sweet taste compared with Spanish octopus, which is more pungent,” Gus said. Another signature appetizer, Estia Chips is crispy-thin slices of zucchini and eggplant stacked and served with tzatziki, a refreshing sauce made with Greek yogurt, cucumber and garlic. To ensure a year ‘round supply of red, juicy tomatoes for the Greek Salad, Estia contracts with farmers from across the country. There are no leafy greens in this salad, just vine-ripened tomatoes tossed with cucumbers, green peppers, red

onions, olives, feta cheese, and red wine vinaigrette. The result is a delicious and complex combination of tastes; sweet, sour, and savory. Three Estia locations (others are in Radnor and Marlton, NJ) treat guests to an authentic Mediterranean dining experience. “Our cuisine is very fresh and very simply prepared. We emphasize the fresh ingredients in every dish we serve,” Gus said. Carrying on a family tradition of restaurants dating back the 1930s, the Aegean Restaurant Group also includes three Pietro’s Coal Oven Pizza restaurants, one in Radnor and two in Philadelphia. All have wine, beer and cocktails available, as well.

ocated in the heart of center city, The Capital Grille Philadelphia is renowned for dry-aged steak, Sommelier-selected wines, and impeccable service. “We make a private club steakhouse experience available to the public,” said Managing Partner Ken Valles. Mouthwatering dry-aged steaks include Porterhouse, hand-cut New York Strip, Steak au Poivre with Courvoisier cream, and Porcini-rubbed Bone-in Rib-eye: slathered with flavor and finished with 15-year aged balsamic. “Capital Grille is unique in that we dry-age in house, and our guests have a nice variety of cuts from which to choose,” Ken said. In addition to steaks, the sumptuous dinner menu includes a selection of fresh seafood from sustainable purveyors, appealing appetizers, refreshing salads, and more. Don’t miss signature dishes like Calamari with Hot Cherry Peppers, which is pan-fried and tossed with garlic butter, or Lobster Mac & Cheese. An award-winning wine list offers options from nearly every wine-growing region in the world. A popular express lunch menu option called Plates is targeted to guests who are short on time. The exclusive ambiance of Capital Grille is further enhanced by traditional décor. Walls lined with polished wood cabinets hold personalized wine lockers for frequent diners with a passion for vino. In addition to paying a yearly fee of several hundred dollars, wine locker holders agree to purchase a minimum amount of wine at significant savings over menu prices. Their selections are then stored for them to consume while dining. Other wine holder perks include consultation with a sommelier, preferential pricing, wine locker holder events, and opportunities to buy rare vintages. Currently, all wine lockers are spoken for, and there is a waiting list. “The Capital Grille focuses on creating a relationship with our guests,” Ken said. Another level of doing this, along with the wine lockers, is the Capital Grille Concierge. This app, available for Android and iPhone, allows users to secure a reservation with two clicks, browse food and wine pairings, buy gift cards, or inquire about events. Future plans at The Capital Grille Philadelphia include a rewards points program in conjunction with other Darden restaurants; and al fresco dining at The Capital Grille this spring. “We have everything ready to go when nice weather returns,” Ken said.

moist, fluffy chocolate cake. White frosting with a hint of sparkle. Black fondant adorned with one single sugar flower. There’s something timeless about a Renaissance Pastry cake. “I don’t follow trends,” founder Nancy Berill says, “and I like to stick to the basics made from scratch.” The model is certainly working. A nurse practitioner by trade, Nancy always dreamed of starting her own business. Her pastry journey started after her mom’s passing a few years ago. Coming home from work every evening, she turned to the one activity that gave her comfort. “Baking is my therapy,” she says, “it just takes your mind away.” As her skills improved and spirits lifted, Nancy felt drawn to cake decorating. “Something kept pushing me in that direction,” she says. Encouraged by her close friends and family, she eventually launched her custom cake company, Renaissance Pastry. The name, her fiancé Joe’s idea, is a nod to the world of art which heavily influences her work. After starting her business in Maryland, she moved her operations to the Artisan Exchange Market in West Chester last spring to be closer to her customers. In less than six months, she’s developed a following drawn to her

minimalistic designs and classical flavors. When it comes to cake flavors, Nancy is indeed a purist. She narrowed her offering to five cake bases, all filled with her signature vanilla bean filling. There are four variations around chocolate cakes: a light, fluffy chocolate cake, a chocolate fudge, a chocolate cherry, and a chocolate rum cake. The most popular option? Vanilla. She decorates the cakes using vanilla buttercream, chocolate ganache, or fondant. On occasion, she’ll add a sparkle to her frosting for a festive touch. In her West Chester kitchen, Nancy keeps a reproduction of Gustav Klimt’s Freya’s Tears painting made in sweet fondant. The resemblance with the original is striking. While she’s not sure where the sweet path will take her next, she knows one thing for sure. “I want to keep including art in my work,” she says. Looking at the edible masterpiece, it’s clear she’s on the right track.

he first thing you’ll notice about Nancy Orlando is her smile. “I like to have fun” she says, and “I am very creative.” Combine that nature with a lifelong passion for baking and chocolate, and you have Heavenly Sweet Chocolates. Her company’s mission? “Making your celebration sweeter.” She’s done just that for the past two years. On Saturday mornings, you’ll find her at the Artisan Exchange Market in West Chester, welcoming visitors to a table covered with her handmade sweets. She offers a large array of confections, such as chocolate lollipops and chocolate-covered sandwich-cookies, all of which happen to be nut- and gluten-free. The generous display attracts sweet teeth of all ages, who gladly accept Nancy’s offer to taste the goods. Wide eyes, large smiles, and “hmm, it’s good!” are the most common responses from her tasters. Not surprisingly, few leave without a bag of her delicious confections. Popular items include chocolate-covered pretzels and award-winning caramel pretzel bites. But the wisest visitors also take her business card to bring a piece of heavenly sweetness to their own celebrations. With a collection of 6000 molds, Nancy can make any chocolate dream come true. Since 2015, she’s poured melted chocolate in shapes of all kinds, from trucks and graduation hats to beer mugs and flip-flops. “I even have a mold

representing a chunk of cheese with a mouse on it!” she says with a laugh. This year, she’s made a lot of mermaid style wedding dress-shaped chocolates for bridal showers. From birthday parties and baby showers, to graduations and retirements, she knows how to personalize your party. Perhaps what sets her apart is her desire to give back. Every month, she picks a new charity with which she shares a percentage of her proceeds. This fall, she raised funds to support hurricane relief in Puerto Ricco and breast cancer research. Helping is something that comes naturally to Nancy and, true to her nature, she does it with a smile. “This is important to me. Together, we can make a difference.”
