As the bride and groom enter Henkel Hall a reflection of infinity mirrors represents their future.

Country Elegance HENKEL HALL OFFERS AN ARRAY OF STYLES IN A PICTURESQUE SETTING WRITTEN BY KIRSTEN CORNELL

8 | FEBRUARY 2020 wedding guide

Planning a wedding with heavy rustic influences is without a doubt a popular theme for brides and only increasing in popularity. As the trend continues to evolve, brides and grooms have embraced farmhouse elements making it one of the most versatile décor styles perfect for any season.

Dad sees his daughter for the first time in the bridal suite at Henkel Hall.

Among the lace runners and mason jars, some couples have given their guests instructions on chalkboards, and of course— lots of burlap. The ability to incorporate casual or elegant aspects into rustic style weddings have truly catapulted this growing sensation, making Round Top’s Henkel Hall a premier event venue for area brides.

THE SQUARE

Henkel Square Market—or simply “Henkel Square” to locals—came about when Charles and Faith Bybee, Houston philanthropists and collectors of American and Texas Pioneer antiques, purchased the six-acre parcel in the late 1960s. While the property blossomed and served as a destination for local patrons and travelers alike, it was destined to grow and utilize its lush hill country surroundings. In 2010, MLD Holdings, LLC of Houston acquired the property and its historic structures. The Massey family envisioned a place where Texas couples could honor their roots while celebrating their future in a cacti-lined setting. Thus, in 2013, Henkel Hall became a reality.

The chapel on the grounds of Henkel Hall.

“The Hall was built to serve as the ‘hub’ of Henkel Square Market,” shares owner Susan Massey. “We saw a need for a multi-purpose center to host occasions such as nonprofit events, weddings/receptions, reunions, corporate retreats, and workshops.”

STUNNING BACKDROPS

Stepping onto the Henkel property, you can already tell there’s a little bit of magic mixed in with the gravel walkway. Saddle up to the hall clad in corrugated tin framed with thick posts and climbing vines and discover the balance of hill country simplicity and classic elegance that awaits you. “When Henkel Hall was built, the décor was chosen to reflect the Round Top ambiance which enables the weddings to utilize the décor as part of their decorations,” explains Gerald Tobola, property manager for Henkel Hall. “Outdoor weddings in front of the Haw Creek Chapel also make a powerful impact with the seating and florals under the oak tree canopy.” Surrounded by centuries-old live oaks, Henkel Hall Wedding Center is a destination in itself showcasing beauty and hospitality.

COUPLE EXTRAS

For couples utilizing the Hall, they also gain access to The Grove, Haw Creek Church, and rooms for the bride and groom. As a bonus, the venue is yours to utilize for two days so you can host your rehearsal on-site, making sure everyone is prepared for the big day.

For brides wishing to connect the gorgeous scenery to all aspects of their wedding, bridal shots can also be scheduled on the property at no additional cost. While prepping, brides can expect make-up vanities, a sofa for seating, chandelier, full-length mirrors, and ample photo-ops courtesy of Henkel’s well thought out décor. Although the groom may not spend as much time primping, he and his crew will also have a sofa, antique wardrobe, opportunities for the videographer to catch some great shots, and because they’ll likely have some spare time—foosball.

LOCAL BRIDES The view of the grounds is stunning from inside Henkel Hall. Arrange for a beautiful carriage for the bride and groom to ride off into the moonlight as the perfect way to end a perfect day.

While Henkel Hall occasionally catches the eye of a few outof-state brides, the majority of their blissful couples come from Fayette, Austin, or Washington County. Known for one of the most well attended antique shows in the nation as well as their host of area B&BS, Round Top is quickly becoming a go-to for local brides which the Massey family enjoys catering to. “We built the Hall with the continued growth of the Round Top area’s existing activities in mind, and intending to aid in the potential for creating new events,” adds Massey. However, don’t wait too late. Most couples book the Hall a full year in advance with their busiest seasons landing in March, April, October, and November.

The Hall isn’t just full of charm. Here are just some of the amenities couples enjoy: • Tables and chairs for up to 200 guests • Assorted tables for additional purposes • Projector and projection screen • Walnut buffet bar can accommodate a double buffet line • Catering kitchen for the caterer of your choice • Separate alcohol bar serviced by in-house bartenders • DJ or Band accommodations • Beautifully landscaped grounds • On-site Manager

10 | FEBRUARY 2020 wedding guide

For the staff at Henkel Hall, their definition of success is for couples to feel that their wedding turned out more perfect than they could have ever imagined. “The venue is in a fantastic location with beautiful scenery, but it is important to us that you feel like you are part of the family—because you are,” adds Tobola. Henkel Hall helped Pete and Christine Hausmann of LaGrange give their daughter her dream wedding. “My wife and I selected Henkel Hall for our daughter’s October 2019 wedding reception and never looked back,” says Pete. “No other event location came close. Gerald Tobola was the most amazing coordinator we could have imagined; thorough, detail-oriented, and made us feel like family through the whole planning process.” Mystic DuRant and her husband Chris fell in love with the venue at first sight. “Henkel Hall is the best venue I’ve ever seen. We are so happy we chose to get married here. The minute my [now] husband saw the place he said, ‘this is it!’” shares Mystic. “Gerald, the event manager, is the best. He is so nice, friendly, and easy to work with. This Hall is beautiful, fun to decorate, and we got so many compliments on it.” Whether draped in eucalyptus or canopied with hundreds of fairy lights, Henkel Hall is a captivating canvas poised and ready to help couples create the perfect beginning for their future.

14 | FEBRUARY 2020 wedding guide

Kristen and Kevin Laney, initially two high school sweethearts from Norman, Oklahoma, ended up raising their daughters in New Braunfels. After their last daughter went off to Texas A&M, they decided that New Braunfels had become “too big,” and began the process of looking for a place out in the country. Kevin sold the landscape materials yard business which he’d had for 20 years and the couple took the year off to settle down in Tilmon, a tiny little unincorporated community that’s just a quick drive northeast from Luling and about 45 minutes from Flatonia. There, they began their careers as homebuilders. After putting on a vast number of banquets and elaborate events for her daughters (and loving the planning and building aspect of it), Kristen had been wanting to have a venue of her own for many years. Kevin, on the other hand, had his doubts. “That’s just not what people do,” he’d say. But then he started seeing more and more, and began to understand what it was all about. After about two and a half years of researching, Kristen had plans to build a barn-style wedding venue, and was even getting ready to pull the trigger on a piece of property (they had even already talked with the bank) when yet another similarly-themed venue opened. “There’s just so many of them,” Kristen said. “We needed something different.” With this at the back of her mind, Kristen was searching for tracts of land to build houses on when somehow, the building came up on her search engine. “I told Kevin, ‘Check out this building,’ and he said, ‘Where’s that?’ I said, ‘Flatonia!’ We were up in Cistern, so we just headed this way and called the realtor,” Kristen said. “She said she could meet us Monday, but I told her, ‘Oh, no, we’re headed there now!’ So she got over here, let us in, and we were in love immediately.” They made the purchase in June of 2019.

The perfect setting for your wedding party.

The Harrison Room is perfect for any occasion.

The Harrison Room provides a warm-yet-stately ambience. Much of the woodwork, floors and walls are original, as is some of the window glass. For your fabulous wedding this beautiful historic buildings is in the heart of Flatonia providing a fitting backdrop to one of the most important days of your life!

The couple could see the potential and the charm, and loved the architecture and history of the building. Judy Steinhauser Pate, author of Flatonia, a book of local history, has been a wealth of information for the couple. It’s through her help and visits to the E. A. Arnim Archives and Museum next door that the Laneys decided upon the name The Harrison Room. J. M. Harrison built the rock structure in 1881. Before that, it was a two-story wood-frame. When the Laneys bought it, it was called the Collins building by the locals because it was owned by a gentleman named Steve Collins. He was the one who had taken all the plaster off of the walls, which had been put up in the 1930s, and put all the mortar back in.

This beautiful cake was created by Melissa Harris, Best Little Cake Shop in Texas.

After waiting for the necessary inspections and approvals for nearly two months, the couple finally began construction in August. The first thing to do was to appropriately alter the structural aspects of the building. “These old buildings were designed to be storefronts on the first level and storage and attic space on the second level. And while Mr. Collins lived up there and had his living room and his bedroom, it wasn’t suited to holding people,” Kristen explained. They added stair railing and brought it up to code, which had been

FEBRUARY 2020 | 15

alarmingly low. “On the second level it went to just above my knee and on the third level it was just two inches above that,” Kristen laughed. They also added a catering kitchen and expanded the bathrooms to include two mens’ and two womens’. They then built out the third floor to include a half-bath and bridal suite. In short, a whole lot has happened this past fall. “This venue is smaller, but that’s another thing that this area doesn’t really have,” Kristen said. “There are a lot of big venues, there are the ones that belong to the churches, and those that belong to the local city.” The Harrison Room can be a ceremony site, but it can also be just a party place for a class reunion, baby shower, wedding shower, or even a site for the rehearsal dinner for people who are having one of those bigger weddings.

Owners Kevin & Kristen Laney of The Harrison Room, historic downtown Flatonia, Texas.

Historic Flatonia, Texas offers many perfect bridal portrait scenes.

A warm welcome awaits when you arrive at The Harrison Room.

16 | FEBRUARY 2020 wedding guide

Since the ribbon-cutting on December 12, 2019, The Harrison Room has hosted a political event, a progressive lunch, a Christmas mixer, a stop on the Wine Walk, and even a photoshoot for the Czhilispiel Court. At the time of writing, they’re also hosting the Flatonia Prom next weekend. And they’ve already booked their first wedding for November of this year. Kristen has loved every event so far, and is especially proud of and pleased with the turnout of the events that have been hosted so far. Kristen is most looking forward to hosting weddings, and seeing people celebrating, coming together, having fun, and knowing that it’s all happening within the walls of this historic building. “I love to see people happy. I want to see them having a good time and enjoying what we’ve put together here,” Kristen said. She loves seeing people’s faces when they come upstairs and just say, “Wow! It still keeps going!” They Laneys have seen people come through already who know the building as the Ben Franklin, and they’ve heard the stories: “This is where I bought my first lipstick,” and “This is where we’d pick out fabric.” They also found out that the Western Audit down the street would put bicycles together and store them upstairs for when Christmastime would come. Having Jimmy Novak, the last person to run the Ben Franklin, come through with his granddaughter (who wants to be a wedding planner), was a special moment. “People who worked at the Ben Franklin would come through and say, ‘Now this wasn’t there.’ I’d tell them, ‘Yeah, it was!’ It was just hidden behind plaster, or behind a staircase that they never got to go to,” Kristen laughed. There has been plenty of positive feedback from the locals, and news is quickly travelling through word-of-mouth alone. People have even made the comment that they don’t have to spend the money to decorate because the building already does it on its own. “We didn’t know anybody here; we just gave Flatonia a shot, and they have opened their arms to us. This community is really, really nice,” Kristen said with a smile. “There are a lot of really big families with last names that I totally, totally mess up,” she laughed. Lots of families have come through, excited for the Laneys and excited for the community. The Harrison Room is located in the historic downtown Flatonia at 103 East North Main Street. It can host up to 170 guests, with an elegant 2,300-square-foot reception and bar area on the first floor. Also on the first floor are the catering kitchen and guest bathrooms. The mezzanine level is 800-square-feet and gives access to the The Grooms Room. It overlooks the first story, and is therefore perfect for a DJ and lights. The third floor is the floor used for the ceremony, and is home to the Bridal Suite. The Suite is large and has a private bathroom and hair and makeup vanity. Beautiful photos and more detailed information concerning the amenities included with renting the venue for your special day is listed on the FAQ section of their website, www.theharrisonroom.com.

The Texas

Bridal Bazaar PLANNING YOUR WEDDING HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

26 | FEBRUARY 2020 wedding guide

Texas Bridal Bazaar event creator Megan Westfall has always had a knack for marketing and business development. At a early working age, Megan proved to have a natural talent at sales. As years in sales went on she became more seasoned and always desired to have her own business. At a young age she was intrigued with fashion, wedding and formal gowns and would many times dress up and as she recalled “there is a picture of my grandmother on her wedding day accompanied by my great grandmother who was dressed very elegantly and I always knew I wanted to be a fashionista like they dressed in the pictures I’d see.”

Enjoy the fashion show at The Texas Bridal Bazaar.

These things would later spark what has now become a thriving wedding dress business. While in Houston she worked her way up from two wedding dresses at a flea market to over 100 wedding gowns in a free standing boutique in the heights. After three prosperous years and over 50 5 star google reviews, Megan longed to be home closer to family..so she moved back home to Fayette County. The ‘Texas Bridal Bazaar’ is brought to local brides and vendors as a result of using her past experience participating and planning wedding expos and events. Wedding expos were a great tool in the past to boost her business and shes excited to help other business owners in the area get exposure to the hundreds of brides who marry in Fayette County. Megan recalls being interviewed by many news sources and was even featured in the Houston Chronicle because of her participation in expos. “There are tons of beautiful wedding venues and very talented vendors in our local area” said Megan. The main purpose for the event is to let brides know Fayette County is a one stop shop for weddings! This Bazaar is a oppurtunity to get out in the eyes of the people who would consider hiring local vendors for service. Last year, Megan orchestrated the full house fashion show during the ‘Texas Bridal and Wedding Expo’ at the George R. Brown convention center in Houston. Megan also participated in dozens of other bridal expos and events. The ‘Texas Bridal Bazaar’ is already gaining attention on the internet in preparation of the March 28th event. The Bazaar will be a good event for everyone to attend. There will be an exposition from two o clock until six, where vendors and attendees can meet and greet . Every hour a free prize drawing winner will be announced! Newleyweds looking to sell their leftover wedding decorations and supplies will also be in attendance...plan to come out and find great deals! There will be a huge wedding dress and veil sale!

Brides can visit with the many vendors in attendance at The Texas Bridal Bazaar.

At 6:30 promptly a fashion show of new and vintage styles will begin. Vintage wedding dress styles in the spirit of the Antique show happening just a few miles away. A Givenchy bridal dress from the early 1900’s plus a few puffy shoulder 80s style gowns will grace the runway. Vintage wedding dresses are having a major moment in the bridal world, many brides are looking for a vintage look. While relaxing and enjoying the fashion show, cake tasting with local bakers will be available at no additional cost. Immediately following the fashion show will be a mock Bachorlette party will begin hosted by ‘Love Winx’. Bring your whole wedding party, group of girlfriends or just bring yourself for a fun evening with lots of laughs and freebies. Mimosas will be served. The entire event is free and we encourage everyone to attend whether youve just gotten engaged, or are already married...we want to see you there!
