I love books. My husband loves books. My mom loves books. Our preferred genres are vast and range from classics, to murder mysteries, historical novels, children’s literature (Yes, there are some great books we have enjoyed from this category- don’t laugh, you read Harry Potter!), Christian romance, and more. Reading isn’t something that we HAVE to do, it’s something we enjoy and find relaxing. Our children always have had an atmosphere where reading is part of daily life. As a teacher and a mom, I encourage you to promote literacy in your home, but just like all healthy habits… the first step always begins with you. Start with the oldest trick in the (ahem) book: storytelling. Tell them stories of the day they were born, give the background of when you were a kid and your experiences playing baseball or taking piano. Make time for grandparents to relay days of old to the younger generations. Lastly, my all-time favorite, pull out the photo albums and relive all the memories of family vacations! When you build a narrative in their heads, their little minds can begin the process of “watching the movie” play out based on words alone. Work in classic bedtime stories – “Good Night Moon”, “Where the Wild Things Are’, and anything by Dr. Seuss. Just like eating your veggies, taking a bath, and going to bed – which are all good and necessary things – creating a culture of literacy takes consistency. I have yet to meet an adult to ever said that they regretted learning to read. The more you do read, the more you can read – and the more you enjoy it. Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Ways to implement reading in your home: -

Set an example. Be a role model. Actions speak louder than words. If your children see you reading and enjoying it, they will value reading. Children emulate their parents consciously and subconsciously. In our home, we have books on bedside tables, on bookshelves, and on racks in the bathrooms. We take them on trips, we share them with each other, we gift them for birthdays and for Christmas, we reference them in life. Books are a part of our lifestyle. Would you like the to be a part of your child’s?

-

Take part in your SETX library’s reading programs. Most offer a children’s summer program – join the fun and do reading time for yourself while your children are doing their part! Many also offer year-round reading activities for children, including story time.

-

Reading isn’t limited to just books – help your child discover magazines, comics, audio books, coffee table style photography books, and short stories.

-

What did you like to read when you were a child? Share those books with your child.

-

Take turns reading aloud using character voices or fun accents.

-

Ask questions about the pictures on the pages, create your own story from the pictures.

-

Rate books you read on a scale of 1-10. Ask your child to tell you why they gave the rating they did. You’ll be surprised at the window into their brain revealed by their answers.

-

To whom would you recommend this book? Brother? Bestie? Grandma? Dad? Then, after Dad or Grandma reads it, they can use lines from the story in daily dialogue and have a special connection!

-

Give your opinions about the book – tell your child if you liked it and why, tell if you didn’t enjoy it and why not. I like to ask my kids follow up questions that allow them to validate their experience both positive and negative. I give my kids the freedom to not like a book, but I want them to think about why. Was the story boring? Were the pictures not cool? I love, love books, but don’t get me wrong… not every book is good.

They had five members and would put on a basketball exhibition to entertain people before dances at large urban venues like the Savoy Ballroom in New York City. Today the team is made up of men and women. Basketball is the setting, but the actual show is as much Vaudeville as NBA. Your child will enjoy the humor, the pace, and the oversized personalities of the Globe Trotter players.

Each year, they bring big Christian bands to Beaumont and add a Christian conference for students from across the Golden Triangle and beyond.

Do you and your husband have a hard time agreeing on a movie? This is one with something for both of you. Women will enjoy the love story and the premise that a man really can be trained to do things right. Men will appreciate Bill Murray in all of his comedic glory. He is in a class of entertainment legends that we’ll one day lose – this is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy one of his classic performances on a big screen in front of an audience.
