Fort Cavazos is the Army’s premier installation to train and deploy heavy forces. A 214,968-acre installation, this is the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two armored divisions.
Like the state of Texas, Fort Cavazos is big and boasts of being the largest active-duty armored post in the United States Armed Forces. Fort Cavazos is nicknamed the Great Place because of the quality of life the post and the area offer Soldiers and their families. These qualities are important, especially with home-basing initiatives, frequent deployments and family stability and support.
Soldiers assigned to Fort Cavazos can expect to have one of the highest qualities of life standards in the Army. New housing, quality medical care, thriving communities, recreation and schools combine to ensure that Fort Cavazos is the Great Place.
Fort Cavazos covers a total of 340-square miles and supports multiple units, a corps headquarters and a robust mobilization mission. Fort Cavazos also meets the training and support requirements for many smaller units and organizations, thus maintaining a vital defense force for the United States of America.
This installation rests in the beautiful ‘hill and lake’ country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas and 150 miles north of San Antonio.
For everyone who enjoys the outdoors, the Great Place is the ideal location, because of the warm winters and hot summers. The nearby lakes, Belton and Stillhouse, offer year-round outdoor recreation activities.
Fort Cavazos also captures the attention of the entertainment industry and is the frequent host of celebrities and entertainers.
The Fort Cavazos experience is only limited by the individual. So, make the most of your time here!
Fort Cavazos, formerly known as Fort Hood, is the Army’s Premier Installation to train and deploy heavy forces. A 214,968 acre installation, Fort Cavazos is the only post in the United States capable of stationing and training two Armored Divisions.
There are few individuals who are the right person, in the right place, and at the right time. General Richard E. Cavazos was one of those people. From growing up on a cattle ranch, sustaining a career-ending football injury in college, and facing enemy forces in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars, Cavazos learned from his life experiences and used them to become one of the Army’s finest Soldiers. He served as the first four-star general of Hispanic descent in Army history. Cavazos’s actions, guidance, and loyalty to the Soldiers he served with led retired Lt. Gen. Daniel P. Bolger to declare him the epitome of “Army done right.”
Richard Edward Cavazos was born on Jan. 31, 1929, in Kingsville, Texas. Born to Mexican American parents, Cavazos spent his childhood following in the footsteps of his World War I veteran-turned-ranch foreman father. Despite growing up in an era of intense racism, Cavazos’ parents managed to put all of their children through college, an unheard of accomplishment for most Mexican American families at that time. Cavazos attended Texas Technological College (now Texas Tech University) on a football scholarship until he broke his leg his sophomore year. After his recovery, Cavazos continued his education through the school’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps program and graduated with distinction. In 1951, he was commissioned into the Army and completed basic officer training at Fort Benning, Georgia (now Fort Moore).
Upon completing his training, 2nd Lt. Cavazos deployed to Korea where he was selected as the platoon leader of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 65th Infantry Regiment.
65th Infantry Regiment, 18th Infantry Regiment

Known as The Borinqueneers, the 65th Infantry had been in Korea since the start of the war and was primarily made up of Soldiers from Puerto Rico, many of whom only spoke Spanish. Cavazos, who was raised bilingual, was a welcome addition after a series of commanders who spoke no Spanish, which resulted in confusion and chaos during battles.
Throughout his time in the Army, Cavazos believed in the moral ascendancy of leaders; the belief that troops needed to have complete trust and faith in their
commanding officer to achieve victory. This belief dictated his actions throughout his career, even early on in Korea. Evidence of his determination to achieve moral ascendancy was clear in February 1953. Cavazos, at first leading a few of his men and then going on alone once under attack by enemy fire, captured a wounded enemy soldier who had been left behind after an earlier skirmish. Cavazos was awarded a Silver Star for his bravery.
In June 1953, Cavazos’ leadership abilities were once again on display. He led
his men on an assault of the enemy-held Hill 412 as part of a maneuver to cover Outpost Harry, an important defensive position near the hill. They soon came under heavy enemy artillery fire, which resulted in many American casualties. After successfully defending Outpost Harry through three intense hours of fighting, Cavazos received the order to return to friendly lines. Refusing to leave fallen and wounded American Soldiers behind, he repeatedly went back to rescue missing men, despite being wounded himself. His actions led to the Army awarding him the Distinguished Service Cross.
Cavazos rotated back to the United States in the fall of 1953 where he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas (now Fort Cavazos). Eventually rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel, he was sent to Vietnam in 1967. There he became the commander of the 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment. His style of leadership was immediately noticed by his troops. “He was an atypical army officer in Vietnam,” remembered Bill Fee, who served under him. “Most battalion commanders stood in the rear or in a helicopter above to direct the battle… [He] had nothing to do with that. He fought on the ground with his troops during battle … he was on the ground with us as we were facing the North Vietnamese Army.”
Another testament to Cavazos’ loyalty to his men and their safety was when he organized a counterattack against enemy forces near Loc Ninh. He once again disregarded his personal safety and led an assault on the enemy’s hillside position, often exposing himself to hostile fire while moving among his troops. He directed such a barrage of artillery fire towards Viet Cong insurgents that the enemy soon fled. This counterattack led the Army to award him a second Distinguished Service Cross.
While Cavazos was certainly a fearless Soldier, he is also remembered as a beloved mentor and teacher. His determination to share what he had learned throughout his career made him influential in the development of the Army’s Battle Command Training Program for high-ranking officers (now Mission Command Training Program).
General Colin Powell credited Cavazos for helping him after a less than stellar performance evaluation had Powell reconsidering his Army career. But it was the countless Hispanic Soldiers who followed in his footsteps who credit Cavazos for paving the way for their careers. “I told him what he meant to us poor Hispanic kids,” recalled Maj. Gen. Alfred Valenzuela , “his impact as a mentor is probably the greatest impact our army had … we all looked up to him as an American soldier, a Hispanic soldier. He was the guy we wanted to be. If we couldn’t be him, we wanted to be near him and serve with him.”
Cavazos retired from the Army in 1984 after 33 years of service. Before his retirement, he made military history when the Army appointed him as the first Hispanic brigadier general in 1976 and then fourstar general in 1982. Richard E. Cavazos passed away in 2017 at the age of 88 due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Upon
the news of his death, countless Soldiers paid tribute to the man who helped shape today’s Army. “He was such a good soldier,” stated retired Gen. Gordon Sullivan, “… he liked combat soldiers. He was courageous, and they knew it, and they knew he couldn’t ask them to do anything he wouldn’t do with them … he was born that way.” On May 9, 2023, Fort Hood was renamed Fort Cavazos. Lt. Gen. Sean Bernabe, III Armored Corps Commanding General spoke on the renaming: “We are proud to be renaming Fort Hood as Fort Cavazos in recognition of an outstanding American hero, a veteran of the Korea and Vietnam wars and the first Hispanic to reach the rank of four-star general in our Army. General Cavazos’ combat proven leadership, his moral character and his loyalty to his Soldiers and their families made him the fearless yet respected and influential leader that he was during the time he served, and beyond.”

Ill Corps’ colorful history dates from 1918 when the Corps served in World War I, winning battle streamers for the Aisne-Marne, Lorraine, and the Meuse-Argone campaigns.
Inactivated in 1919, the Corps was reactivated in 1940 to train combat divisions. During World War II the Corps was deployed to The European Theater of Operations and earned the name “Phantom Corps” by hitting the enemy when least expected. It won campaign streamers in Northern and Central Europe, and established the Remagen Bridgehead, enabling the Allies to secure a foothold in Germany.
Inactivated in 1946, Ill Corps was reactivated in 1951 and served on active duty until 1959. Inactivated that year, it quickly returned to duty at Fort Hood during the Berlin Crisis in 1961. In 1962, Ill Corps was designated as part of the U.S. Army Strategic Army Corps.
During the Vietnam conflict, Ill Corps trained and deployed two Field Force Headquarters and many combat and combat service support units totaling more than 100,000 personnel.
In recent years, Ill Corps forces have fought in and supported operations worldwide, to include Grenada, Panama, Honduras, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, and provided humanitarian support for Operation Restore Hope in Somalia. Ill Corps
elements provided support for Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For many years, the primary focus of the III Corps was the reinforcement of NATO. As the world and the U.S. Army have changed the Corps has also changed and broadened its focus to be ready to deploy anywhere, anytime and win.
The III Corps was organized in the Regular Army in May 1918 at Mussysur-Seine, France, and in December of that same year, the “caltrop” was approved as its heraldic symbol. The three-pointed design represents the numerical designation of the Corps.
As the heraldic symbol of Ill Corps, the caltrop brings with it centuries of war fighting. It is a simple yet diabolical device composed of four spikes or points arranged so that in whatever manner it is thrown on the ground, it rests on three and presents the fourth upright. Since ancient times — its use can be traced back to the 53 B.C Battle of Carrhae — it has served to slow the advance of troops, especially horses, chariots, war elephants, camels, and, more recently, land vehicles equipped with pneumatic tires. During the Second World War, large caltrop-shaped objects made from reinforced concrete were used as anti-tank devices. And, during the Korean War, the caltrop was employed effectively by United Nations forces against Chinese infantrymen.
The Corps’ shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) was approved by the Adjutant General, American Expeditionary Force on December 3, 1919. It was approved by the War Department on June 17, 1922. It currently consists of a blue caltrop with one point up, a white equilateral triangle with one point down in its center, and outlined in green.
The distinctive unit insignia (DUI) consists of a yellow shield on which a blue caltrop with one point up is situated. Within the center of the caltrop is a white equilateral triangle with one point down. Yellow alludes to armor.
The blue and white are the authorized colors used in distinguishing flags to represent III Corps.

The 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson builds and maintains combat ready expeditionary forces necessary to fight and win in complex environments as members of a Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational (JIIM) team or as a Mission Command Element (MCE); provides first class support to Soldiers, Airmen, Civilians, and Families; and enable unified action with community, state, and interagency partners to accomplish all assigned missions.
The 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley build and maintain combat ready forces; on order deploys these forces in an expeditionary manner to conduct Decisive Action to fight and win in complex environments as members of a Joint, Inter-organizational, and Multinational (JIM) team.
The brigade was the first in the US Army’s Engineer Brigades to be converted to a modular design. This means that the Brigade can be deployed and sustain itself independently, without a division or corps level command supporting it. Additionally, the brigade’s design allows it to take command of additional units within a theater of operations, allowing for greater versatility on the battlefield.
The 36th Engineer Brigade executes training and readiness oversight of four Engineer Battalions, provides mobility, counter mobility, general engineering, and survivability experts to directed missions and transforms in order to lead the way for III Armored Corps, “America’s Hammer” and the US Army Engineer Regiment.
Every Soldier in the 75th Field Artillery Brigade is an essential member of the world’s
most lethal artillery formation, a cohesive team built on trust that will dominate any adversary, under any conditions, and in all domains.
As members of highly trained crews, sections, squads, and platoons people are the foundational bedrock of our individual and organizational lethality.
Trained and certified leaders are driven by a commitment to engaged, standards-based, caring leadership, and focused on the imperative of building trust. Leaders intuitively, proactively, and assertively take action to enforce stands and discipline to hold one another accountable.
Diamond Team lethality is founded on the technical and tactical mastery of organizational core competencies, bound together with trust, and is ready to dominate any adversary as members of the III Corps, Army, Joint, and Combined Team.

Welcome to Fort Cavazos Child & Youth Services (CYS)! We recognize the strength of our Soldiers comes from the strength of their Families; we consider it an honor and look forward to supporting your Family readiness. CYS is an Army program that provides services to all Military, Department of Defense and Contract Agencies who support the mission of our Garrisons. Our highly trained staff is committed to providing a safe, nurturing environment that meets the holistic needs of the child/ youth ages four weeks to 18 years old. Lastly, our programs and activities are specifically designed by early childhood and youth development specialists to meet the growing needs of 21st century military Families. CYS believes that parents are the most influential individuals in the lives of their child/youth. For this reason, our facilities and programs strive to create a Family-friendly environment where parents and staff work in partnership in the positive development of their child/ youth. Research shows that when Families and teachers work together in support of learning, it results in the child/youth remaining in school longer, performing better in school and possessing a higher sense of self-esteem. We thank you for partnering with Fort Cavazos in the growth and development of your child/youth. We look forward to your visits and encourage you to become involved in the planned learning activities in the centers, in the
home of your provider or in the comfort and convenience of your own home.

Family Child Care - FCC
Shoemaker Lane BLDG 36000
1st Floor, Left Corridor - Room 101 +1 (254)288-3190

The Family Child Care (FCC) program is an integral part of the Child and Youth Services (CYS) child care system available on Army garrisons. FCC provides quality home based care for children 4 weeks to 12 years old and is offered in government owned and government leased housing located on post.
FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours: full day, part day, extended /overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. FCC also offers a 15% cost savings compared to Child Development Centers and School Age Care fees
FCC Providers are vetted and only the best qualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers must complete background checks and regular home inspections as a part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development.
Army policy requires that anyone providing care on a regular basis for more than 10 hours per week, must be certified through Child and Youth
Services as a FCC provider.
Providing unauthorized child care in government owned/leased housing puts you at risk of losing your housing privileges. Unauthorized child care by an uncertified person puts your child at risk.
For more information on how to register your children in the FCC Program visit MCC.COM MilitaryChildCare.com

Sports and Fitness Programs provide team sports, individual sports, fitness and health programs and, programming at Child Development Centers, School Age and Youth Programs. Pre-registration is required for Sports and Fitness Programs. Children and youth that are currently registered in CYS can be enrolled in Sports and Fitness using WebTrac.
The National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) has a website for evaluation of coaches. Parents have the opportunity to evaluate coaches on the NAYS website. Parents must have the coach member number to rate their coach. You can get this number from the CYS Sports and Fitness office.
A sports-specific physical must be completed annually, prior to the start of the sports season. The form must be completed with a doctor’s signature and stamp, then submitted to Parent Central Services during registration. Hint: The best time to get your child’s physical — if possible — is in July. This way, your child’s physical will be valid for all sports for one full year.
Fort Cavazos rests in the beautiful ‘hill and lake’ country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas and 150 miles north of San Antonio.
For everyone who enjoys the outdoors, the Great Place is the ideal location, because of warm winters and hot summers. The nearby lakes, Belton and Stillhouse, offer year-round outdoor recreation activities.
Fort Cavazos also captures the attention of the entertainment industry and is the frequent host of celebrities and entertainers.
Additionally the Killeen, Copperas Cove, Harker Heights, Belton, Gatesville, Temple and Lampasas communities that surround us are a model of support for Army families.
There are a variety of activities available on Fort Cavazos and in the surrounding area. There are the natural wonders of
the Hill Country and nearby lakes, indoor and outdoor recreation activities, hunting, fishing, boating, sports, cultural and historic activities available.
No matter what your interests, there is something available nearby!

NATIONAL MOUNTED WARRIOR MUSEUM
Projected to open to the public in July 2024
Fort Hood/Fort Cavazos has a long standing history tied to mounted warfare, mounted soldiers, and the units that support them. Soon the post will be home to a state-of-the-art facility to share that heritage. The National Mounted Warrior Museum is located just outside the main gate, has completed Phase 1 construction. The museum offers over 12,000 square
feet of permanent gallery space, over 1000 square feet of temporary exhibit space, and a 4,900 square foot rotunda. The facility sits on 17-acres adjacent to the 1st Cavalry Division Horse Detachment and is projected to open to the public in July of 2024.
The heart of the Army is the men and women dedicated to its core values: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These values are exemplified, through countless examples, in the narratives and themes explored in the National Mounted Warrior Museum. The mission of the museum is to honor their legacy through the preservation, conservation, and education of its representative artifacts and heritage material. In the museum, visitors will be able to recount the history of Fort Hood/Fort Cavazos and its units, the Mounted Soldier’s perspective, and the evolution of mounted warfare from the inception of the United States to present day.
The heroism and challenges of the mounted warrior will be explored through an immersive exhibit gallery full of interactive encounters. The gallery will also feature vehicle displays with tanks, tank destroyers, aircraft, and modern-day fighting vehicles all displayed in dynamic scenes portraying real life actions. Visitors
will be able to experience educational and interpretive programming, special events, and rotating exhibits that further explore untold stories of Soldiers’ lives to include the personal, social, and cultural challenges they overcame in service to our Nation. The museum is a joint effort between the U.S. Army and the National Mounted Warfare Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Mounted Warrior story. The U.S. Army is providing the location, exhibit work, administrative and infrastructural support. The Foundation has financially supported the construction of the phase II of the museum and will continue its fundraising role in support of further development, improvement, programming, and outreach.
The U.S. Army owns and operate the museum. The museum will be free, open to the public, and will not require a visitor pass visit the museum.
• The National Mounted Warrior Museum plans have been underway for over ten years. The groundbreaking ceremony was held in November of 2020.
• Building construction was completed in November 2021. Building was gifted to the U.S. Army from the National Mounted Warfare Foundation in the January of 2022.
• Projected Grand Opening is on 8 November 2023. The Museum is hosting Open House Thursdays to allow the public to see the progress.

The USO Fort Cavazos opened in 2001 in a small location in the Rivers Building, as the first USO on an U.S. Military installation. Less than a month later, 9/11 changed the nature of American and military life alike. USO Fort Cavazos to on a major role on the installation. When Fort Cavazos Soldiers began deploying in 2003, the USO began providing snacks and other services for every outbound and inbound flight, as well as for families at homecoming ceremonies.
In 2006, the USO moved to its current 4,400 square foot location on 50th Street. On average, 8,000+ soldiers and their families visit the center each month.
In 2011, USO expanded its footprint to its Administrative Offices – to accommodate its ever-growing staff. Building 44 used to house the Post Chaplain’s offices.
Today we continue to serve Fort Cavazos’s military community through our center and programs that support our service members and their families.

Building Strong and Resilient Military Families by Promoting Positive Parent-Child Relationships
The Army’s New Parent Support Program helps Soldiers and Family members who are expecting a child or have a child or children up to 3 years of age build strong, resilient military Families. Through a variety of supportive services including home visits, support groups, and parenting classes, the NPSP teaches ways to cope with stress, isolation, military transitions such as deployments and post-deployment reunions, and the everyday demands of parenthood. Please contact your Installation Army Community Service Center, Family Advocacy Program for more information
and the opportunity to speak with an NPSP Staff Member.
The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) provides comprehensive support to Family members with special needs. An Exceptional Family Member is a Family member with any physical, emotional, developmental, or intellectual disorder that requires special treatment, therapy, education, training, or counseling, and meets the eligibility criteria. EFMP pertains to active-duty Soldiers, US Army Reserve Soldiers in the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) Program, and Army National Guard AGR personnel serving under authority of 10 USC or 32 USC. Department of the Army Civilians do not enroll in the program.
Soldiers with Exceptional Family Members are required to register for EFMP and keep enrollment information current. That way, Family needs will be considered during the
OCONUS assignments process. If you’re eligible for EFMP services, Family members must be screened and enrolled when they accompany authorized Soldiers on OCONUS assignments. Screenings include a medical records review for all Family members and developmental screening for all children 72 months and younger. (Special education needs are considered only in assignments outside the United States. Assignments within the US and its territories are not based on the educational needs of children.)

Deployment isn’t easy. Mobilization, Deployment and Stability and Support Operations (MD&SSO) helps make it as smooth as possible—for units, Soldiers, and Families.
MD&SSO provides training and publications to help commanders, Soldiers,
and Families navigate the challenges of mobilization and deployment. We also have resources for rear detachment cadre and Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) leaders.
We assist the chain of command by empowering SFRG leadership and volunteers, providing them with robust training and resources to maintain a successful and effective SFRG. In addition, Family Readiness Support Assistants (FRSAs) provide administrative and logistical support to commanders, rear detachment commanders, and SFRG leaders.
MD&SSO also assists during Noncombatant Evacuation and Repatriation Operations. During emergencies, the Army Disaster Personnel Accountability and Assessment System (ADPAAS) helps gain accountability, assess Family needs, and coordinate assistance.
Welcome to the Lone Star State! Part of the Hill Country, Central Texas includes the communities of Killeen, Harker Heights, Belton, Copperas Cove, Temple and Gatesville.
Killeen is the largest city in Bell County, with a population of 145,482 in 2017, and is home to Fort Hood. Until the 1940s, Killeen was a relatively small and isolated farm trade center. With the construction of Camp Hood (now Fort Hood) during World War II, the influx of soldiers and their families flocking to the area quickly turned the area into a military boomtown. Central Texas offers its residents a little bit of everything: small town charm, big city amenities, natural beauty and vibrant culture. Within the area are several popular tourist spots, including beautiful lakes, acres of park land and an emerging wine industry. Hill Country has also made Texas second to Florida as the most popular retirement destination in the United States.
Central Texas encompasses 25 counties, with Bell and Coryell counties being the closest to Fort Hood. Bell County was created from Milam County just five years after Texas entered the Union. County Commissioners chose a county seat on the banks of Nolan Creek and named it Nolandsville. Two years later, Jan. 12, 1852, the town’s name became Belton and it was incorporated.
Belton’s first settlers built houses, stores, saloons, and a hotel and prospered until the Civil War when they lined up behind the South. When things went bad for the South, Belton also experienced tough times. By the 1880s, Belton had recovered from the war and began to flourish once again. It was the largest town in Bell County and had a brisk economy. Belton would have become a boom town if it had a railroad, but it only reached its doorstep as the Santa Fe Railroad crossed the county line on the eastern edge near Rogers.
During the mid to late 1860s, the Chisholm Trail cut through central Bell
County along a route between the present day cities of Belton and Salado.
Between 1877 and 1915, 10 railroads considered placing tracks through Bell County, but only two companies actually came to the area. At a time when railroads made and broke rural communities, the acquisition of a railroad was important. The Missouri, Kansas and Texas Railroad, known as the Katy, went through Belton, while the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad, known as the Santa Fe, established a new town just north of Belton, known as Temple.
The Texas State Legislature created Coryell County in 1854, naming it after James Coryell, a frontiersman and early land holder. In themid-1800s, most of the county’s resources were devoted to stock raising and subsistence farming. Like most areas in the South, Coryell County suffered a severe economic decline after the Civil War and throughout Reconstruction. Two railroads were completed through Coryell County in 1882: the Texas and St. Louis Railway laid a
narrow-gauge track from Waco to Gatesville, and the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe crossed the southern tip of the county near Copperas Cove, making its way from Belton to Lampasas. The arrival of the railroads prompted the establishment of Oglesby, Lime City, and Leon Junction, and provided new economic opportunities for Mound, Gatesville, and Copperas Cove. A third railroad company, the Stephenville North and South Texas, laid track from Hamilton to Gatesville in 1911, providing the northwestern part of the county with easier access to rail service.
The United States involvement in World War II brought an end to the depression; on a local level, new war industries paved the way for a dramatic increase in the population of Bell and Coryell counties. Among the military facilities built in and near the area in the 1940s were Camp Hood, the Bluebonnet Ordnance plant and a camp for prisoners of war.
Fort Hood is now the most populous
U.S. military installation in the world. The main business area is in Bell County, with the training country-side area of the post in Coryell County.

The Texas Hill Country, or central Texas, is shaped by its many rivers and hills. The area is known for its hot summers and mild winters with occasional cold spells. Humidity is high during the warm season, though afternoons especially further northwest can see a wind shift and drier air before Gulf air returns after sunset. In a single year, the region can receive up to48 inches of precipitation, and flooding is common near rivers and in low-lying areas. The wettest months are April and May.
Every second counts in a disaster so planning and preparation can be lifesavers. The Texas Division of Emergency Management provides residents, communities, public safety professionals, businesses and schools with invaluable information and resources for dealing with calamities, from floods to fires to earthquakes, hazardous waste and terrorism, to name just a few. Earthquakes in Texas are becoming more common but most of the temblors aren’t very strong. Central Texas has one major fault line but it is considered one of the lowest risk zones in the country. Dallas, Houston and the panhandle are all near other Texas faults, while West Texas has the most fault zones in the state. In the last 100 years, only five of the 100 earthquakes in the state have been strong enough to damage buildings. Besides the damage from the
shaking, earthquakes can trigger landslides, surface fault ruptures and liquefaction, all of which can cause injury or property damage. Contact your local city or county government for information on how to be prepared where you live. More information and ideas on how to secure the contents of your home can be found by visiting www.dps.texas.gov/dem, clicking on “Public Information and Education,” then “Earthquake Preparedness Tips.”
Some exposure to sunlight is good, even healthy, but too much can be dangerous. Broad spectrum ultraviolet radiation, listed as a known carcinogen by the National Institute of Environmental Health Science, can cause blistering sunburns as well as long-term problems like skin cancer, cataracts and immune system suppression. Overexposure also causes wrinkling and premature aging of the skin.
Cloud cover reduces UV levels, but not completely. Depending on cloud cover thickness, you can still burn on a chilly, overcast day, so be prepared with sunglasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved garments, wide-
brimmed hats and a parasol.
Because of the county’s high temperatures, it is important to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Stay indoors when temperatures are extreme. Drink cool liquids often, particularly water, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcoholic beverages as they dehydrate the body. Eat small, frequent meals and avoid foods high in protein, as they increase metabolic heat.
If you must venture outdoors, avoid going out during midday hours. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect sunlight. Avoid strenuous activities and keep hydrated. Coverall exposed skin with a high SPF sunscreen and follow general sun exposure precautions. Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
Heat exhaustion symptoms include heavy sweating; weakness; cold, pale and clammy skin; a fast, weak pulse; nausea or vomiting; and fainting. If you experience symptoms of heat exhaustion, you should move to a cooler location. Lie down and
loosen your clothing, then apply cool, wet cloths to your body. Sip water. If you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention. You should seek out immediate medical attention if you experience symptoms of heat stroke, such as a body temperature of more than 103 degrees; hot, red, dry or moist skin; a rapid and strong pulse; or unconsciousness. For more information, visit www.cdc.gov/disasters/extremeheat.
Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Even beyond coastal regions, flash floods, inland flooding and seasonal storms affect every region of the country, damaging homes and businesses. It is dangerous to underestimate the force and power of water.
During a flood watch or warning, gather your emergency supplies and stay tuned to local radio or TV stations for further weather information. If you are outdoors during a rainstorm, seek higher ground. Avoid walking through any floodwaters — even
water 6 inches deep can sweep you off your feet. If you are driving, avoid flooded areas. The majority of deaths in floods occur when people drive through flooded areas. Roads concealed by water may not be intact. Water only a foot deep can displace a vehicle. If your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground. Rapidly rising water can engulf a vehicle and sweep it away.
For more on protecting yourself from flooding in Texas, go to www.dps.texas. gov/dem, click on “Public Information and Education,” then “Flood Safety Awareness.”
Hurricane season begins June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Hurricane hazards come in many forms, including high winds, heavy rain, flooding and storm surges (high tidal waves). Visit www.cdc.gov/disasters/hurricanes for preparedness tips and help in creating a hurricane emergency plan.
While more likely at certain times
of the year, thunderstorms can happen anytime. A severe thunderstorm can knock out power; bring high winds, lightning, flash floods and hail; and spin into a twister in seconds. Pay attention to storm warnings. Remember the rule: “When thunder roars, head indoors.” The National Weather Service recommends following the 30/30 rule: People should seek shelter if the “flash-to-bang “delay — the length of time in seconds from the sight of the lightning flash to the arrival of its subsequent thunder — is 30 seconds or less, and remain under cover for 30 minutes after the final thunderclap.
For more information, visit the National Weather Service’s website at www.weather.gov/safety/lightning.
Tornadoes can develop quickly, with minimal warning, so it is important to have a plan in place before they occur. If a tornado watch is issued, weather conditions
favor the formation of tornadoes, such as during a severe thunderstorm. A tornado warning is issued when a tornado funnel is sighted or indicated by weather radar. You should take shelter immediately during a tornado warning.
For more information on tornado preparedness, visit the Texas Hurricane Center athttps://gov.texas.gov/hurricane.
The majority of wildfires are caused by humans. Causes include arson, recreational fires that get out of control, negligently discarded cigarettes and debris burning. Natural causes like lightning can also cause a wildfire.
If your home is in an area prone to wildfires, you can mitigate your risk. Have an evacuation plan and maintain a defensible area that is free of anything that will burn, such as wood piles, dried leaves, newspapers and other brush.
Even if your home is not in the vicinity of
a wildfire, the smoke and ash produced by wildfires can create air quality issues for hundreds of miles. Pay attention to local air quality reports following a wildfire in your area.
Wildfires are unpredictable and impossible to forecast, so preparation is especially important. Visit www.cdc.gov/disasters/ wildfires for information on wildfire preparedness.
Prepare for winter storms by assembling a disaster supply kit for your home and vehicle. Have your car winterized before the winter storm season arrives. Listen to weather forecasts and plan ahead.
When winter storms and blizzards hit, dangers include strong winds, blinding snow and frigid wind chills. Avoid unnecessary travel during storm watches and warnings and stay indoors.
Winter storms can also cause power outages. During a power outage, gather in a central room with an alternative heat source. Use fireplaces, wood stoves and other heaters only if they are properly vented to the outside. Never use an electric generator or a gas or charcoal grill indoors. The fumes are deadly. If you use a space heater, keep the heater away from any object that may catch fire (drapes, furniture or bedding) and never leave it unattended. Avoid letting pipes freeze and rupture by leaving faucets slightly open so they drip continuously.
For more information on winter preparedness and winterizing your home and vehicles, visit www.cdc.gov/disasters/ winter.
Located in Bell County, Killeen has grown in multitudes of people from all over the world, thanks to Fort Hood. With the addition of the University of Central Texas A&M, Central Texas College, and homes being built at a rapid rate, Killeen is becoming one of the fastest growing cities in America. As the population grows, new businesses are pouring in. Killeen is known as the neighbor of Fort Hood. The Killeen economy is heavily dependent on the Fort Hood post, soldiers and their families. We have a strong talent pool with U.S. Army veterans, an accessible community college, and a stand-alone, state-supported university. American values are strong here. At one time, Elvis himself was stationed at Fort Hood and lived in Killeen.
In 1881 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway constructed a railroad through the Central Texas area. The company established a town and named it Killeen in tribute to Frank P. Killeen who was the assistant general manager for the railroad. By 1884 the town had several general stores, a couple of grist mills, two cotton gins, a hotel and a lumberyard. The city became a prominent shipping location for grains, cotton and wool.
By 1900 approximately 780 people resided in Killeen. In 1905 a noteworthy event occurred for the town when politicians as well as businessmen were able to
persuade the Texas legislature to construct bridges over Cowhouse Creek and other streams which caused the city’s trading area to double in size.
In 1942 a major event occurred, when Camp Hood (later named Fort Hood in 1950) was constructed as a military training post during World War II. Soldiers and their families along with people working in construction migrated to Killeen which caused an enormous growth in the population. More than 300 farms and ranches were eliminated due to the land requirements of Camp Hood.
The cotton gins and agricultural businesses were crushed. Providing services for the military personnel and the military base became major factors in the city’s economy. When the vast majority of the military base personnel left the area after World War II ended, Killeen experienced a recession. However, Fort Hood became a permanent military base in 1950 and the economy began to thrive.

Harker heights is known as The Bright Star of Central Texas. Providing public services that empower people to focus on what matters most: their goals, hopes, and dreams.
Harker Heights is a city in Bell County, Texas, United States. As of the 2020 census, 33,097 people resided in the city, up from a population of 17,308 in 2000. This makes Harker Heights the third-largest city in Bell County, after Killeen and Temple. Incorporated in 1960, the city derives its name from one of the two original landowners and founder, Harley Kern. Harker Heights is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan area. People usually refer to the town as just “Heights”.
Harker Heights is located near Fort Cavazos, a major United States Army post that was designated a permanent military facility in 1950. As the post expanded, the surrounding civilian population increased. Water Control and Improvement District No. 4 was established on land near the Killeen city limits and the military post in 1955, and included the land owned by Pinckney R. Cox and Harley Kern, two hog farmers. These two men subdivided their land in 1957 and began selling lots. By 1960, between 600 and 700 of the lots had been developed and new residents supplied with water and other utility services. Following a petition for an incorporation election, the city was established on September 24, 1960, and Cox was elected mayor. Kern had died before the incorporation, and the Harker in Harker Heights was a concatenation of Harley Kern’s name as a tribute to one of the original landowners. The town’s boundaries expanded to include Forest Hills, Highland Oaks, and Comanche Hills. Cox, Sam Garth Jr., and Barney Sissom created GIASISCO Corporation, which was meant to help expand the town from 400 to 950 acres (160 to 380 ha).

Within a 150-mile radius of Belton is a market of more than 9.4 million people, including the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, San Antonio, and much of Houston. This region encompasses 55 percent of the population of Texas.
Bell County’s first courthouse was a log structure, replaced in 1858 by a larger, more expensive building. The voters objected so strongly to the $13,625.00 cost, that they did not re-elect any of the commissioners involved. Bell County’s third and final courthouse, completed in 1885, features Renaissance Revival architecture
and a copper goddess of justice on top of the clock tower. Behind the courthouse stands Belton’s second opera house, built around 1890. Note the saloons to the left of the courthouse - this area was once known as “rat row.”
Located just below Belton Dam on FM 2271 near historic Tennessee Valley and along the Leon River, the Miller Springs area has played a significant role in the lives of Central Texas inhabitants. Native Americans used the narrow river valley with its overhanging limestone ledges for shelter, transportation, and hunting and gathering activities. The scenic waterway and abundant flora and fauna also provided a favorite recreational location for later Central Texas families. The rock shelter is now part of Miller Springs Nature Center. Independence Day celebrations are a longtime Belton tradition, dating back to 1852. Today, a weeklong, nationally recognized celebration includes a carnival, cattle drive, arts and crafts festival, the PRCA rodeo, and a downtown parade. Each year the parade alone often draws crowds of more than 30,000. The parade pictured here shows a mock re-enactment. Notice the crowds gathered in the streets, perched on awnings, and watching from the rooftops.
Belton’s Fourth of July parade attracts Over 30thousand people to its downtown area every year. Communities from many
Central Texas areas participate by building floats such as this 1920’s one from the historic Taylor’s Valley community. The Belton Carnegie Library, built in 1904-05 with funds provided by Andrew Carnegie, stands in the background. The building now houses the Bell County Museum.

Located in Central Texas on the eastern edge of the American Southwest, Austin is the capital of the state of Texas, the Lone Star State. The city dates back to the 1830s, when the first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the area, then part of Mexico. In 1837, settlers founded the village of Waterloo on the banks of the Colorado River, the first permanent settlement in the area. By 1839, Waterloo would adopt the name Austin and the frontier town would become the capital of the Republic of Texas. The City is named for Stephen F. Austin, the “Father of Texas.” Austin is in Travis, Hays and Williamson counties. Austin has an
estimated population of 961,855 according to the 2020 U.S. Census. Travis County is the fifth most populous county in Texas. Austin’s mild climate allows you to enjoy outdoor activities virtually year round.

Killeen, TX is a hidden gem in the heart of the Lone Star State and has so much to offer, from its affordable cost of living to its thriving job market. There’s a lot to take in, so I’ve put together a few reasons you might want to move to Killeen, TX.
First and foremost, let’s talk money. Killeen boasts an unbelievably affordable cost of living, making it an ideal destination for those looking to stretch their hard-earned dollars. Housing options range from cozy apartments to spacious family homes at prices that won’t give you heart palpitations.
But it’s not just about the financial aspect – Killeen is also a fantastic place to raise a family. With a family-friendly community and top-notch education options, parents can rest easy knowing that their children are getting the best start in life. The city has a range of public and private schools dedicated to providing a quality education for all students. Your children can access a world-class education right in their backyard, from preschool to college.
So, whether you’re craving some outdoor adventure, seeking career growth, or looking to settle down and raise a family, Killeen has it all.
Affordability is often on everyone’s list when looking for a new place to call home. And that’s where Killeen, TX comes into play. With its affordable living and housing options, Killeen offers a budget-friendly lifestyle without compromising quality.
Take housing, for example. In Killeen, you can find many housing options to fit any budget. From cozy apartments to spacious single-family homes, there’s something for everyone. And the best part? The cost of living in Killeen is significantly lower than in many other cities, allowing you to stretch your dollar further.
Let me give you an example. Consider the average price of a home in Killeen, which is around $200,000. Compare that to a city like Austin, where the average home price is over $500,000. By choosing
Killeen, you can save significant money and invest in your future. Sure, there’s a small commute, but totally worth it. Killeen is a straight shot down highway 195 to Austin, Georgetown, Cedar Park, and other areas in and around Austin.
But it’s not just housing that makes Killeen affordable. Everyday expenses like groceries, utilities, and transportation are also more budget-friendly in this area. You can enjoy a higher standard of living without breaking the bank. After all, with inflation being what it is, you might want some relief.
So, if you’re looking for a place where your hard-earned money goes further, Killeen is the place to be. With its affordable cost of living and housing options, you can have the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of without financial stress. It’s time to make Killeen your new home sweet home.
When it comes to finding a new place to call home, one of the most important things
to consider is the available job market and career opportunities. Fortunately, Killeen, TX, has a growing job market that offers a wide range of opportunities for professionals in various industries.
One of the reasons the job market in Killeen is thriving is its proximity to Fort Cavazos (formerly Fort Hood), one of the largest military installations in the country. The army base provides employment opportunities for military personnel and their families, creating a ripple effect that stimulates the local economy.
In addition to the military sector, Killeen is also seeing growth in healthcare, technology, and education industries. With the expansion of medical facilities like AdventHealth Central Texas and Metroplex Hospital, there is a growing need for healthcare professionals. Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Central Texas College also contributes to the job market by providing employment opportunities in
the education sector.
For example, Jessica, a recent graduate with a degree in nursing and one of my homebuyers, found a job at one of the local hospitals in Killeen soon after moving to the area. She was impressed by the number of job openings and the competitive salaries offered in the healthcare field. Jessica was not only able to start her career but also found a supportive community of healthcare professionals who were passionate about their work.
Whether you’re a recent graduate or looking to make a career change, Killeen’s growing job market offers a range of opportunities to suit different skill sets and interests.
A primary consideration for families looking to relocate is the sense of community and the quality of education available for their children. Killeen, TX, excels in both areas, making it an ideal place to call home.
In terms of community, Killeen offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere that embraces families with open arms. The residents are friendly and always ready to lend a helping hand. Plenty of community events and gatherings allow you to connect with your neighbors and build lasting friendships.
When it comes to education, Killeen holds nothing back. The city is home to several excellent public and private schools, providing a range of options to suit different preferences and needs. The Killeen Independent School District (KISD) is renowned for academic excellence and offers various extracurricular activities for students to explore their interests. Take, for example, the Ellison High School marching band, which has won numerous state-level championships and received national recognition. Access to high-quality educational institutions ensures your children receive the best education and support to thrive.
We’ve all heard the stories about terrible Killeen schools, but those are the exception. There are plenty of phenomenal schools in KISD.
Killeen’s family-friendly community and commitment to education make it a top choice for families looking to relocate.
