A Note from the Publisher The Hill Country region is sometimes referred to as “Little Napa Valley” for its many winery attractions. But this area also boasts talented artists and thoughtprovoking galleries, featuring everything from ceramics, to oil paintings, to amazing bronze sculptures. We are so fortunate to have artists and galleries that inspire and delight our senses. With galleries constantly highlighting new works by local, state, national and international talents, the scene retains its freshness and regularly makes lists touting the best art scenes in the nation. It is one anchor attraction in the Hill Country, which draws a collective 7 million visitors annually. From the Art Walks in our towns, to artist displays at wineries, to galleries with their own style and collections, art offers a way to take a piece of our beloved Hill Country back home. Welcome, and enjoy. Ken Esten Cooke Publisher

About the cover: Barbara Mauldin has always been an artist, taking the leap to fine art more than a decade ago. Primarily an oil painter working both outdoors and in the studio, she’s constantly inspired by the Texas landscape. Barbara enjoys painting cactus because she loves the multitude of interesting colors.

Local galleries draw visitors to the Texas Hill Country The art galleries of Fredericksburg, Texas, host a monthly event: First Friday Art Walk. Participating galleries fly Art Walk flags and remain open until 8 p.m. Most galleries serve food and local wine. Musicians may also be part of the mix. Because the galleries want to support a thriving art market in Fredericksburg, they refer customers between each other, encouraging patrons to check out what’s next door or down the street. Many galleries turn First Friday Art Walk into a weekend event, inviting fea-

tured artists to stick around for further talks or demonstrations. In October 2018, Nocona Burgess, great-great-grandson of Chief Quanah Parker, came to Koch Gallery and gave two lectures about the Comanche. More details about each month’s events can be found in the Fredericksburg Standard-Radio Post, at gallery websites and at First Friday Art Walk’s website, www. ffaw.com. The Fredericksburg galleries invite everyone to come early, stay late and enjoy art.

AW Studio Gallery

311 East San Antonio Street 832-623-8352 awstudiogallery.com Open “when I’m here or by appointment.” Alan Wilcox opened a working studio gallery in 2017. His artist statement reads, “I am just Alan, and I like to paint.” Wilcox took up painting eight years ago. He also works in sculpture, and his mother is an accomplished artist. After a heart attack he returned to painting, and the art overtook his living room. Now those paintings are spread throughout a house built in 1941, one block off Main Street, with an extensive deck beside Barons Creek. “The whole property is just so peaceful. It has this wonderful karma that’s hard to explain,” Wilcox said.

One room of the house is his studio, and in it hang paintings by John Austin Hanna, Becky Joy, Doug Prine and Jason Rich that serve as inspiration. “This room is an art-lover’s dream. It’s the perfect place to paint,” he said. The studio has no set hours — when Wilcox is there, the door is open. It’s not uncommon to find his newest paintings still drying. A few estate pieces are also on display. For First Friday Art Walk, Wilcox collaborates with his wife, Rhonda, who started Fredericksburg Trade Days.

Artisans – A Texas Gallery

234 West Main Street 830-990-8160 artisanstexasgallery.com Open Monday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Artisans represents and supports Texas artists who create an array of fine art, fine furnishings and fine craft. The gallery includes ceramics, furniture, wood turnings, sculpture, jewelry, mosaics, glass, functional pottery and kinetic outdoor art, along with paintings. The art may be decorative or functional. Owner Patricia Karr prides herself on the gallery’s “Texas-friendly atmosphere.” She defines fine craft as “handmade work of various media, but it’s the highest level of quality. When people think of art, they think of painting. But fine craft is another category

of art,” Karr said. “Our big thing is supporting local artists here. Everybody’s from Texas.” The Karrs have been collecting art for more than 25 years and try to replicate the welcoming atmosphere they have enjoyed in other galleries. Behind every piece of art is a talented, experienced, hardworking artist with a unique story to tell through their creations. Artisans carries art in a wide price range, appealing to both the first-time art buyer and the collector. For First Friday Art Walk, Artisans hosts a reception from 5-8 p.m. Cont. page 14

Nancy Bush

812 North Llano Street, Suite A 830-9977-0515 www.nancybush.com Nancy Bush began her art career by studying the Old Masters. She balances her time between studio work for several hours each day and plein air painting. Her landscapes are characterized by attention to atmospheric conditions, such as clouds, fog and mist, using thin layers of paint to create luminescence and evoke emotion. Bush paints in a classic tonalist style and in 2019 was invited to be a signature member of the American Tonalist Society. The inaugural show was held at the Salmagundi Club, a center for American art in New York City since 1871. Bush is also a master signature member of the American Impressionist Society. Her

work is represented at Astoria Fine Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming; Sage Creek Gallery, in Santa Fe, New Mexico; Wild Horse Gallery in Steamboat Springs, Colorado; and at InSight Gallery in Fredericksburg. Bush was featured in the February/March 2020 issue of Western Art & Architecture magazine and in the December 2019/January 2020 issue of Art of the West, her third appearance in that publication. In March 2020 she will have three pieces of art in the invitationonly “Night of Artists” exhibition and sale at Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio. This will be her 18th year to participate.

Keely Corona

830-456-4181 www.keelycorona.com Keely Corona has drawn from the time she was a little girl. “I’d take off in the pasture, take my sketchpad. It was calming to me,” she said. “It makes all your worries go away.” In 2006 she started pursuing fine art. In her first show she sold 17 of 27 paintings exhibited. Corona is known for her Hill Country landscapes — some tonalist, some impressionistic, some more abstract. Her work has been exhibited at Hill Country galleries, and in 2008 two of her paintings juried into a show at The Museum of Western Art. She also teaches art and finds her students

enjoy the classes most when she is spontaneous. Corona encourages her students to not lose what drew them to art in the first place. “I tell them, ‘Let you be in there. Don’t lose that which makes you unique,’” she said. Corona also does decorative painting for the home, creating faux finishes, murals and ornamentation for homes across Texas as well as iconic buildings in Fredericksburg. The best way to reach Corona to learn about her classes or to view her art is to call or text. She is also available for commissioned work. Her studio is located only two-and-a-half blocks off Main Street.

Die Künstler von Fredericksburg P.O. Box 1122 www.dkfredericksburg.org

Die Künstler von Fredericksburg means “The Artists of Fredericksburg.” Founded in 1993, the art group numbers about 100 members. Die Künstler’s purpose is to promote art appreciation and education in Fredericksburg and the Texas Hill Country for artists at every level of experience. Although Die Künstler does not have its own gallery space, it provides several local exhibiting opportunities for its members. Die Künstler meets at 6 p.m. on the first

Thursday of the month at Hill Country University Center, with live demonstrations by noted artists. Meetings are free and open to the public. On April 11, Die Künstler will hold its third annual spring show at Marktplatz from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The second weekend in November is Die Künstler’s annual Fine Art Show and Sale, featuring more than 200 original works in a variety of media and styles. This year’s free event will take place November 13-15 at historic St. Joseph’s Halle. Cont. page 15

Donald Darst, Grey Forest and Helotes 14391 Old Bandera Road, Helotes 210-370-9204 helotesgallery.com

Open Thursday-Friday 12 p.m.-6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. One year ago Donald Darst and three partners opened Helotes Gallery in a historic stone building in Old Town Helotes. “We tried to redo it in such a way that it keeps the old look but with new lighting. We upscaled it,” Darst said. The 2,500-square-foot space is filled with mixture of fine art and fun art by 60 selected artists. Darst works from his studio, located off the winding roads of Grey Forest. His art can be viewed at Carriage House Gallery of Artists, in Boerne, at Helotes Gallery and at donalddarst.

com. He’s a painter known for his landscapes that evoke a mood and tell a story. “A veteran with PTSD told me he’d sit in his easy chair and look at a painting of mine, and it was totally calming for him,” he said. Darst also teaches classes — an activity he loves, especially when working with students new to art. And he continues to be a student himself, recently taking a class at Fredericksburg Artists’ School. Currently he is working in a tonalist style, getting back to his painting roots. “It’s exciting to do art that comes from inside of you and that you just love doing,” he said.

Fredericksburg Art Guild & Gallery 308 East Austin Street 830-997-4949 www.fredericksburgartguild.com Open Wednesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

The Fredericksburg Art Guild & Gallery is a nonprofit organization founded more than 40 years ago by artist John McClusky to support the arts in the Texas Hill Country. All members are Texas artists. The guild currently has 25 members who also serve as docents. Featured art shows rotate between the members each month. Adult oil painting classes are offered throughout the year by Truby Hardin, and Nan Henke teaches watercolor. Participants from both classes participate in a juried adult student show in February. Another juried show takes place each May for artists in and around Gillespie County. Every other August the guild

participates in the annual Gillespie County Fair. It also conducts children’s art classes and showcases their work in a reception in October. Courtesy of Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance (PCAA), the guild is represented in a large tent at Oktoberfest, held on the first weekend of October. Support for the guild is provided by PCAA and the City of Fredericksburg’s Hotel Occupancy Tax. During First Friday Art Walk the gallery stays open until 8 p.m. Visitors get to interact with the guild’s artists while enjoying fine art, local wine and refreshments in a newly renovated historic home.

Fredericksburg Artists’ School 812 North Llano Street, Suite A
 830-997-0515
 www.fbgartschool.com

Now in its 26th year, Fredericksburg Artists’ School, founded by Nancy and Bill Bush, brings to Fredericksburg nationally recognized artists from around the country. These professionals lead four- and five-day painting workshops, primarily in oils or pastels. Classes are open to artists who work in all types of media, and all levels of experience are welcome. “Our students come from throughout the United States and come primarily to learn from these particular artists and also because Fredericksburg is a wonderful city to visit,” said Bill Bush, who manages the school. Nancy Bush, who shows in premiere gal-

leries around the country, also teaches at the school. Bush is not an artist — he’s a CPA. More than 25 years ago on the way home from attending an art school in Santa Fe, Nancy turned to him and said they needed to start an art school. Which meant Bill needed to start an art school. “She made a deal that whatever did not involve putting paint on a canvas, I do,” he said. All classes are held at Appretiare, located at 237 West Main Street, home office of ISAaccredited appraiser Lee Ann Whatley. Cont. page 36

DONNA ROCHE

The Heat, the Fire, the Art By Megan Willome “If oil paint is the prose of painting, then encaustic is its poetry.” – painter Chester Arnold, “Encaustic Art,” by Lissa Rankin There’s something about Donna Roche’s paintings that make you want to reach out and feel the burn. “You can touch it,” she said, pointing to her

art displayed at Fredericksburg Art Guild. Roche makes art using encaustic, an ancient technique combining wax and pigment, which are then fused with heat. Encaustic comes from a Greek word meaning “to burn

in.” Some of Roche’s paintings may have smooth, glass-like sections of color and others may have rough sections that stick out from the surface. Some may have both in the same piece of art. The differences in texture are created by heat and flame. And heat and flame are things Roche knows well. She was a firefighter for twenty years in Boulder, Colorado. When she was hired, all firefighters were also medics, so she has her basic EMT certification. “I had always done hard physical labor. I thought, ‘How hard can it be?’ Roche said. She’d grown up on a farm in Iowa and had never even seen a mountain until she went west on a Trailways bus. She came in 14th out of 13 available spots, but later the fire department asked her to apply again and she was hired. That was in 1981. “It was a giant leap of faith. It was a time when few women were in the fire service. We were not exactly welcomed with open arms. I was tested and challenged on a daily basis for the first couple of years. It was all about proving myself to be capable and tough,” Roche said. “That experience gave me the courage to face a challenge, like believing I could be an artist.” Growing up, Roche was not a strong student — except in her high school art class, under

21 a teacher named Lucille Rogers. After Roche retired she and her photographer husband moved to Fredericksburg, and she decided the time was right to pursue art. They have seven acres and a variety of animals, including horses. It took her husband a while to adjust to the dark and the quiet, but Roche loves it. Her studio on the property is the perfect place to create. “It’s very meditative. I can be in space with quiet and some music, my dog, and hours fly by. I can shut everything else out,” she said. Roche is new to encaustic — she’s mostly self-taught from YouTube videos and books. She’s considered teaching the technique, but it requires a lot of ventilation for the fumes. The process of encaustic is intensive, requiring tools like electric griddles, heat guns, heat lamps, hot plates, tacking irons and gas torches. “That appealed to me,” she said. “Of course, for me, the heat, the fire — I have an affinity for that.” Roche melts beeswax and damar resin and combines that with pigment. Each color is applied to an absorbent surface, then each new layer must be fused with heat. “You hit that pigment with the heat and it moves. There’s not a lot of control.

It’s extremely frustrating, but if it’s wrong you scrape it off and start again. Like most things, you just learn and become more comfortable as you do it,” she said. Encaustic dates to the first century in Rome, but it expe-rienced renewed interest in the late-20th century. It can be layered or scraped, can utilize oil paint or pastel, and can even be used to create special effects, like inlay or stencil. Roche enjoys encaustic’s flexibility. She can make art that is abstract or representational or something in between. The encaustic process lends itself to collage, and Roche has used gauze, tea bags and metal in her artwork (she’s done a bit of welding), and she’s considered working with photographs as well. She’s also added a shellac burn to the edges of some of her paintings, a process she describes as “setting it on fire.” Because encaustic art is made with wax, it can be destroyed in extreme heat. “Don’t leave it in your car in the summertime,” she warned. Roche joined the Fredericksburg Art Guild in 2019 and has found it to be a supportive group that emphasizes educating the public. “It’s the perfect place for me to start,” she said. “I’m just gonna continue to make my art, to create. I’m pretty compelled to do it. It’s insatiable.”

Some are from the Texas Hill Country and others are from as far away as Russia and South Korea. Owner Mary Katherine Fickel curates a diverse collection of modern and traditional art, including heavy-textured oils, abstracts and contemporary Western paintings. Fickel was raised in the gallery industry and after dividing time between Fredericksburg and Houston, decided to put down roots here with her husband.

“We felt this was a great town to be part of, in the art community,” she said. The gallery is located in the historic Schmidt-Dietz building and was featured in Texas Monthly’s August 2018 issue about small towns in an article titled “Creative Spaces.” The Good Art Company is open every day and has an online gallery to promote its artists and help customers discover good art. It holds a reception until 8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk.

Jill Holland

jill@jillhollandart.com 830-456-0422 jillhollandart.com Jill Holland has been painting professionally for 17 years. She’s a Fredericksburg native who has been instrumental in the city’s art scene, starting the Fredericksburg Art Guide, First Friday Art Walk and the Yellow Door Studio. Her work evokes landscapes, but with just enough abstraction to allow room for imagination. She often mixes together a variety of artistic media — including sand, plaster, spray paint, wood stain and metallic leaf. Holland is represented at Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia, and Jack Meier Gallery in Houston. Her paintings have been featured on episodes of “Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern” and “The Lying Game.” Her work has

also found homes in both private and corporate collections. Holland is the founder and CEO of Atlas & Arrow, a nonprofit serving orphans and widows around the world, and a portion of her art sales are donated to the organization. Currently, Holland is the resident artist at August E’s, a premiere dining establishment in Fredericksburg, where she has worked with owner Dawn Savanh for over 10 years. “She is one of my best venues and because of that I now hang permanently there,” Holland said. Her new show “SKY” went on display in February. Cont. page 42

214 West Main Street 830-997-9920 www.insightgallery.com Open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Sunday-Monday by appointment by calling 512-947-2916 or 830-998-4647 InSight Gallery represents a select group of today’s finest painters and sculptors. The 60 nationally recognized, award-winning artists are American Impressionist Society Masters, Cowboy Artists of America, Master Oil Painters of America and Pastel Society of America Masters. These artists are invited to participated in prestigious national museum shows, including Prix de West, Autry/Masters of the American West, Briscoe Museum’s “Night of Artists” and Eiteljorg Museum’s “Quest for the West.” “Amid such esteemed artists, we strive to

provide a welcoming and hospitable environment so that art collectors, art lovers and art novices alike can come and enjoy the experience,” said Elizabeth Harris, who has owned and operated the gallery with her husband, Stephen, since 2015. The gallery is located in the 1907 Schwarz building, which was restored in 2010. “We realize how fortunate we are to have this much space — 8,000 square feet of open show space — tall ceilings, lots of natural light, original pine floors, original rock walls. It was an immaculate restoration,” Harris said.

Kathy Weigand

kweigand36@yahoo.com 830-342-7161 www.kathyweigand.com Kathy Weigand is an accomplished photographer and artist and a native of Fredericksburg. She was raised on a small ranch outside of town, and the family’s quarter horses and Hereford cattle were her favorite subjects to sketch as a youth. Weigand’s oil paintings and photographs have been acquired by collectors across the country and printed for corporate marketers, small business advertisers and a variety of publications. Digital files are available at HillCountryImages.com. A former PRCA Rodeo photographer, Weigand was awarded a master of photography degree by Professional Photographers of

America (PPA), the oldest and largest photography association in the United States. Many of her images have earned the prestigious Loan Collection Award, the highest award PPA gives. The cowboy lifestyle is part of Weigand’s roots and one of her favorite subjects. She creates works of art that celebrate all things Western, from Native American tipis to Hill Country Landscapes to wild horses. As an advocate for wild horses, Weigand donates part of the proceeds from her wild horse prints and oils to The Cloud Foundation, a Colorado-based nonprofit.

Koch Gallery

222 West Main Street 830-992-3124 www.bertkoch.com Open Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday 1-4 p.m. Koch Gallery’s space in the heart of Fredericksburg evokes Santa Fe. Owner and collector Bert Koch carries a selection of more than 1,000 Native American paintings by Native American artists, including those affiliated with Apache, Cherokee, Choctaw, Kiowa, Navajo and Pueblo tribes in the Southwest and Oklahoma. The collection, more than 30 years in the making, includes vintage art from the 1920s. Each piece of art is labeled with the artist’s name and tribe. “These vintage artists made huge contributions to the art world during their lifetime,” Koch said. “These are highly collectible pieces

by Native American artists that are really hard to find.” Koch also seeks to purchase art collections and artwork — both contemporary and modern — from individuals and estates. In addition, the gallery sells rugs from Navajo and Zapotec artisans, Pueblo pottery, bronze sculpture by Margaret Drake and jewelry from highly recognized Native American artists, including Artie Yellowhorse, whose Navajo-influenced silver creations are paired with quality stones. Koch Gallery holds a reception until 8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk. Cont. page 44

Larry Jackson Fine Art & Antiques 209 South Llano Street 830-997-0073 www.larryjacksonantiques.com Open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

For 20 years, Larry Jackson Fine Art & Antiques has served Fredericksburg with its commitment to carry fine art, quality antiques and uncommon home decor. The gallery carries estate artwork by notable and collected artists, such as Vives Atsara, G. Harvey, Porfinio Salinas, Robert Pummill, Robert Wood and many others. Also featured are Western and contemporary bronzes and original paintings that complement contemporary households. “We assist both first-time and long-time clients to select the perfect art, antiques, modern furnishings and accessories and create an upto-date yet timeless look that will be enjoyed for a lifetime,” said co-owner Jeannie Jackson, whose education focused on art and design. Her husband, Larry, brings 40 years of ex-

perience in art and antiques to the gallery. His expertise is recognized throughout the United States. “He is Fredericksburg’s very own ‘Antiques Roadshow’ expert,” Jackson said. The gallery specializes in helping clients indulge in artful living, with fine rugs, unique lighting, objects d’art and what Jeannie calls “unforgettables” of every imaginable description. The knowledgeable staff has the expertise to evaluate and appraise estate jewelry, precious metals, glass, rare books, antiques and fine art. Larry and Jeannie Jackson are among the founding members of First Friday Art Walk and host a reception until 8 p.m.

The Museum of Western Art

1550 Bandera Highway, Kerrville 830-896-2553 museumofwesternart.com Open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The legend of the West lives at the Museum of Western Art, which grew out of the Cowboy Artists of America (CAA), an invitationonly group. CAA member and sculptor Jason Scull is the resident artist, working in a studio on the grounds. Just step on the porch and knock on the sliding glass door to say hello. Many authors — including James Michener, for “Texas,” and Larry McMurtry, for “Lonesome Dove” — have worked in the museum’s non-circulating research library, the Griff Carnes Research Center. The museum’s permanent collection includes 150 sculptures and 250 paintings by artists working from the mid-20th century

through today. Artifacts, including knives, guns and saddles, are also on display. The interactive Journey West exhibition in the Children’s Gallery allows kids to dress in period clothing, climb aboard a Conestoga wagon and sit inside a tipi. The museum was the last structure designed by noted Texas architect O’Neil Ford. Outside the 14,000-square-foot building, the Masel S. Quinn Pavilion overlooks the city of Kerrville and hosts outdoor events and education activities. The Fred Fellows life-size bronze “An Honest Day’s Work” is the museum’s mostphotographed item.

Nan Henke

nanhenke@gmail.com www.TexasHillCountryArt.etsy.com Nan Henke teaches Simple Watercolors workshops at Fredericksburg Art Guild and Gallery. The classes, held once a month, from January through October, are non-judgmental, with a lot of laughter. No art experience is required. Each workshop focuses on creating one or two small paintings while learning watercolor basics. One of Henke’s goals is to help artists understand why watercolor works differently and to build confidence using this unpredictable medium. “I like watercolor because you can’t completely control it” Henke said. “You have to be OK with it doing what it wants to do. You

can’t expect to end up with the exact picture that you had in mind when you started.” She also teaches how to emphasize watercolor’s brilliance and transparency by outlining it with ink. “We enjoy following every strange, odd place that the watercolor went,” she said. “Even if there’s a mistake, we use the ink to highlight it.” Each two-hour workshop costs $40, and each one is different, so they do not need to be taken in any particular order. Classes take place at 308 East Austin Street. Contact Henke via email for registration information Cont. page 46

RS Hanna Gallery

244 West Main Street 830-307-3071 www.rshannagallery.com Open Tuesday-Saturday 10:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. With deep Texas roots in the art gallery world, RS “Shannon” Hanna has an eye for some of the best in contemporary art. RS Hanna Gallery likes to say it builds on the past, lights the present and brings beauty home. “What we hold beautiful carries us through the fray, unnoticed for the most part until it leaves us,” Hanna said. “Art is one of those things that continues to intrigue long after its first encounter, a world of images that focuses our remembrance of who we are.” The gallery represents over 60 work-

ing artists whose representational work has won awards at prestigious shows across the United States and been featured on national magazine covers. In 2020 the gallery will host exhibitions from several national nonprofit organizations, including American Plains Artists and American Impressionist Society. Oil Painters of America will hold its “29th Annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils” May 15 through June 13. For First Friday Art Walk, RS Hanna Gallery hosts a reception from 5-8 p.m.

River’s Edge

832 & 838 Water Street, Kerrville 830-895-5184 riversedgegallery.net Open Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. or by appointment Debbie and Mike Wilson own River’s Edge, “The Jewel of Kerrville.” The 20,000-squarefoot gallery also offers fine art printing and custom framing. “I’m not trying to be an upper-end gallery. I want to be a middle-class gallery, where they walk in and the artwork is affordable,” Debbie Wilson said. “We’re the best-kept secret in Kerrville.” River’s Edge represents about 30 artists, including painters, sculptors and jewelrymakers. Some of the art is traditional, some is contemporary, and some is straight-up bizarre, and that’s the eclectic mix the gallery wants. The last Friday of the month River’s Edge throws a party, featuring an artist along with

a live band. Wilson specializes in conservation of family heirlooms, priceless art and vintage photographs. “I do 3-D objects, like flags, Army uniforms. My favorite one was a CIA agent’s guns and handcuffs and badges,” Wilson said. “I do a lot of things like that that other frame shops have no idea how to do. When I frame it, you can’t even tell how it’s attached.” Her favorite part of her job is the stories she hears as customers bring in valued heirlooms and trust River’s Edge to preserve them. “We try to save our customers as much money as possible but give them the art they deserve,” Wilson said.

Studio Massaro

613 West Main Street 775-303-8130 www.facebook.com/cmassarostudio Open Wednesday-Friday 11 a.m.–4 p.m., Saturday-Sunday 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Studio Massaro is located in Fredericksburg’s Historic District at the west end of town and features the work of fine artist Catherine Massaro. She works in multiple disciplines, including oil painting, mixed media, assemblage, collage, photography, handmade cards and jewelry. Massaro has partnered with a friend who carries a line of organic coffees from around the world to create Atlas Organic Coffee Company. The name comes from Massaro’s 12-piece work of assemblage and collage called “Atlas,” which was inspired by atlases in old geography textbooks. Her iconic scissortail

flycatcher rests on two old-time globes to create coffee’s logo. Free samples are always available in her studio. “I love things falling away into the past, but still beautiful. Part of what goes away is our geography because countries have come and gone, borders have changed,” she said. Massaro tells stories through her art, giving every customer more than meets the eye. Serious buyers and collectors are invited to make an appointment through gallery director Michelle Alvord to visit Massaro’s studio, located only five minutes away from the gallery.

47 URBANHerbal

407 Whitney Street 830-456-9667 www.urbanherbal.com Open Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. or by appointment UrbanHerbal is off the beaten path — and that’s a good thing. Away from the bustle of downtown, visitors find art in three exhibit spaces, as well as a network of gardens, a labyrinth, a greenhouse filled with beautiful plants and a gift shop of handmade herbal products. The expanded shop and laboratory sell comestibles, fragrances, skin care, candles and more. Each item is made on-site by founder and owner Bill Varney. He calls UrbanHerbal “a natural antidote to the routine.” The gallery exhibits many local artists. Each one is actively involved with the gallery and in turn, Varney spotlights a different artist at

each First Friday Art Walk, building an entire event around their work. UrbanHerbal also offers private classes and is available for weddings and special events. Varney founded Fredericksburg Herb Farm and is the author of the award-winning book “Herbs.” He’s been featured on the Food Network for his knowledge of all things herbal. And he was recently named to the board of The Herb Society of America and oversees the south central region of the U.S., including Texas and parts of Arkansas and Oklahoma. During First Friday Art Walk, Varney, a former restaurateur, hosts a reception until 8 p.m.

Yellow Door Studio

810 North Llano Street 830-456-1097 www.theyellowdoorstudio.com Camille Cohn, owner of Yellow Door Studio, has been an elementary school art teacher, an art director for an ad agency, and a parent who involved her kids in art at the kitchen table. “It’s who we are, part of our story,” she said. One of her children is on the autism spectrum, and art was one of the first ways they connected. Cohn also teaches art to people with disabilities. For adults, Yellow Door Studio partners with local wineries to offer on-site painting parties, like a trip to Becker Vineyards to paint the poppy field. Art and Vino classes take place Saturday nights from 5-7 p.m. Other workshops may take place on a Sunday afternoon or over a weekday evening or two.

“It’s all about expressing your creativity. If you don’t know how to pain a straight line, we can help you with that,” Cohn said. By summer she hopes to introduce classes in pottery and ceramics, along with studio time for adults. Cohn teaches a variety of children’s classes — after school, summer camps and Grown Up & Me. The elementary-schoolers recently made papier-mâché milagros and wrote an artist statement about miracles in their lives. The middle school art program is growing. “Kid stuff — that’s my passion,” she said. “We use real art supplies. These kids leave with stuff you can hang on the wall.”

“For the great doesn’t happen through impulse alone, and is a succession of little things that are brought together.” – Vincent van Gogh (October 22, 1882)
