Intersect over Concan

As the saying goes with old pirate maps, “X” marks the spot. For Concan and the Texas Hill Country River Region, THCRR, the X isn’t referring to a treasure chest full of gold coins located somewhere near Garner State Park, but rather the X marks the two respective solar eclipse paths which marks the spot of the best viewing for rare sights which for many will be considered more valuable than gold or silver. The two paths mark the areas of the ideal locations to view the two eclipses. Locations outside of the two paths will see a partial solar eclipse for a less than ideal experiece. While even a partial solar eclipse is pretty special, it’s NOTHING compared to seeing the sun and moon align precisely.

It’s like receiving a free complemenary two night stay at a time share in Florida when you could own a beach house on Grand Cayman.

October 14th Annular Eclipse

The first eclipse will be an Annular Eclipse occuring later this fall on Saturday, October 14th between approximately 11:50 am and 12:00 NOON a good portion of the Texas Hill Country River Region called the “The Path of Annularity”

According to NASA, “An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth while at its farthest point from Earth. Because the Moon is farther away from Earth, it does not completely block the Sun. This will create a “ring of fire” effect in the sky for those standing in the path of annularity.”

To safely observe the October 14th, Annular Eclipse you will need to wear approved solar eclipse glasses for the entire duration of the eclipse event.

April 8th, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On Monday, April 8th, 2024 between 1:30PM to about 11:40 PM a Total Solar Eclipse will pass directly over Concan, Garner State Park and a good portion of the Hill Country in Uvalde County.

Pictures from Spring Break 2023

Spring started to break on Thursday, March 15th with temperatures warm enough to hit the river crossings for some Fun on Frio.

At Seven Bluff Crossing a small group of college students were found playing beer pong and kids sliding down the side of River Road. I drove over to Mager’s Crossing where there were only a few seen in the water.

Later that evening there was crowd at House Pasture there to see the Randy Rogers Band perform. Yet, it seemed everyone was keeping an eye on the weather and a cold front was due to come through on Friday bringing with it clouds and misty rain.

The first day of the two day Frio Valley Ranch Golf Classic Tournament kicked off that Friday. Temperatures were indeed cooler but not cold; at least I kept telling myself that.

Optimistically, I was hoping for warmer afternoon temperatures, but instead the area was in for even colder weather Friday overnight.

As early as Saturday morning dawned there were reports of snow on the ground in Leakey and Rock Springs.

Warmer Spring temperatures would only stay for

that Thursday. At Frio Valley Ranch Golf Course, the second and final day of the Classic Golf Tournament had begun.

The golfers braved out chilly temperatures and a misty drizzle that lasted most of the day.

Some of us who work at the golf course like to get a few holes late in the day after tournament wraps up. Not that Saturday. though.

My work at the golf course concluded about 4:45 PM. My set of clubs stayed in the car.

I headed back home and remembered The Droptines would be taking the stage at Joe Jimmy’s. I had interviewed band member Conner Arthur over the phone, the grandson of the Late Kenneth Arthur whose band was the Droptines.

Having missed the band’s show at House Pasture the night before, I knew this was my chance to meet Arthur in person.

Despite the cold and wet weather, I found a small but cheerful crowd at Joe Jimmy’s. Several were standing by a an inviting fire with beers in hand, wearing warm coats, boots and cowboy hats.

arrived too late to see Kaitlyn Butts. which I really regret. Word of mouth has it Butts had an amazing show.

Listening to some of Butt’s music, she really has a fresh sound and “keeping it real” lyrics

Despite the winter weather, the cold weather did not steal the joy of many Spring Breakers.

The ones I talked to not only made the best of the cold weather and were able to create Spring Break memories that will last for years to come.

The true fans of the Frio River and the Texas Hill Country River Region love it in all seasons and in all weather. It’s as it should be.

Frio in Focus Magazine met this motorcycling trio outside of the Bent Rim Grill located near Leakey on RR 337 in March. Keven Marquez, Edger Gallaha and Krystal Diaz traveled from San Antonio to ride the twists and turns or the Three Sisters in the Texas Hill Country.

Marquez said, “On a map, San Antonio doesn’t seem so far away from the Sisters. The breath taking views of the hills, farms and scenery, however remind us how beautiful and peaceful Texas can be outside the city. We were all tired and sore from that night and the next day, but the ride was well worth it.”

People Like Feet

I get a lot of content for my social media channels from my hiking adventures as well as from my yearround visits to the rivers that flow through Uvalde County, Texas.

In November, I posted a reel on social media of me walking through the water at the 19-Mile Crossing near Camp Wood, wearing a bathing suit covered by a puffy winter jacket and coordinating hat and scarf. The reel was about 10 seconds long and included a voiceover of a woman saying, “So I know I said I was busy, but I lied. I was doing this instead”. No big deal.

I personally thought the reel was a cheeky response to my friends back home who were posting about how cold it was in Virginia. They were freezing and there I was still wearing a bathing suit and dipping my feet in the water as the sun went down at one of my favorite spots on the Nueces River.

I anticipated a jealous comment or two from my cousins up north about the warmer weather down here, as well as a few thumbs up from my regular likers, but nothing could have prepared me for the barrage of comments to come...

My cutesy reel started with a few hundred views – which turned into a few thousand views – which turned into a hundred thousand views – which at the time of this publication had turned into 852,517 views. Of course, I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people that looked at my reel, but it was the number and intensity of the direct messages that followed that reeeeeeellly surprised me.

I received three marriage proposals, two offers to be my sugar daddy, one slut-shaming message, and I lost count of how many requests I received for additional pictures of my feet!

Let’s address this these one by one:

Marriage Proposals: Those who know me well know that if a man asks me to marry him, I will say yes. I almost got a tattoo last month that would have read, “Say No”, on my left hand, ring finger as a reminder to decline any future proposals, but I changed my mind and got a tattoo of the moon on my wrist instead (See photos on my Instagram feed @leighlatrelle). Men see me and just want to be with me forever (Go ahead and laugh. I’m laughing too). Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the men that saw a ten-second-long video of me and decided that I was “the one”, but to all three of you, I must respectfully

I’m laughing too). Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the men that saw a ten-second-long video of me and decided that I was “the one”, but to all three of you, I must respectfully decline.

Sugar Daddy: God bless the dudes that wanted to take care of me with all their sugar for the rest of my sweet life. Double bless the one that didn’t want any sugar included in the arrangement. Although the thought of not paying my own bills ever again is very enticing, I must say that without being properly introduced, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want any of our sugar to mix and must respectfully decline your offers, as well.

Slut-Shaming: I had ONE solitary man - out of 850kthat thought I was a whore for posting the reel. I am not a true feminist, but I definitely lean in when it comes to a man trying to shame me for anything. Okay big boy, what was it about the reel that made you uncomfortable? What made you want to condemn me with your words? You were so angry. Why? Do we need to worry that you

Erica Sagebiel Director of Texas Hill Country River Region

Erica Sagebiel recently started her new job as the Director of the Texas Hill Country River Region

Growing up in New Braunfels around the Comal and Guadalupe Rivers, there was always something fun to do with a lot of events and people visiting the community.

Moving to the Frio River area was very exciting to me as it gives me a feeling of home and I love that I will be able to raise my family in an area that is similar to where I grew up.

I am originally from New Braunfels, TX but currently call Uvalde, TX home. My husband is originally from Uvalde and when the opportunity to move back to his hometown arose we took it. Before moving to Uvalde I worked in the mortgage lending industry in the New Braunfels/ San Antonio area. For my first year in Uvalde I worked as a Loan Administrator for Texas Farm Credit.

- I enjoy the beautiful and peaceful surroundings that the Frio River and Hill Country offer. My family and I love exploring the nature around our area and spending time on the river. We also enjoy golfing in our free time.

- I am working on the upcoming solar eclipses, trash bash, and preparing for the summer. I will also be working on things for the off-season like a birding event, seasonal events, and a nature garden. I am looking forward to all the people that will be visiting our area this

summer and the exciting local events that are going to be happening.

We are working on a new interactive mobile scavenger hunt for our visitors to use that will help them explore Concan and find fun things to do as well as check-in at participating businesses which will allow them to collect points and cash them in for fun prizes at the Visitor’s Center. For the younger visitors, we have created an activity book that will be at the Visitor’s Center as well as local businesses in Concan. We are also working on our river clean-up efforts with the help of groups and individuals participating in our River Clean- up program.

- Facebook - Visit Uvalde County and Texas Hill Country River Region. Our website www.visituvaldecounty.com also has all the local events, updates, and lodging information on it.

A River Less Traveled Frio River Private

An aesthetic, uncrowded, family-friendly river experience can be found at Frio River Private Access

The allure of the clear flowing waters of the Frio Rio beacons to many people especially during the summer.

That said, not every visitor to this beautiful river is looking for the same experience. Many prefer a more relaxed and peaceful experience to a rowdy party scene on the river. Frio River Private Access is ideal for those looking for a less crowded, family experience on the river away from the crowds or perhaps someone looking to hike down paths lightly trodden.

You might be someone who has made their escape from a big city to venture on the Frio River on an unhurried canoe or kayak journey. If you are into nature photography, hiking or are looking for a slower, serene, less crowded experience, Frio River Private Access may be what you’re looking for.

Having visited the Stoner Ranch property also known as Big Tree Ranch several years ago for an outdoor church service and picnic, I had already had a taste of what the river and property was like. While heading back from Concan on CR 127, I saw the sign next to the gate reading: Frio River Private Access. Since that was a new offering I hadn’t seen before, I called the number on the sign and spoke with Douglas McLean who manages the property owned by a family trust and arranged for a visit to find out more.

Douglas, also known as Doug. met me at the gate and we drove down to the location of the Big Tree near the banks of the Frio River. You might

ask, “What is the Big Tree?”

The Big Tree is one of the largest Bald Cypress trees in Texas. once holding the title for the largest one in Texas. Information about this massive towering tree can be found on Famous Trees of Texas Website.

In addition to this big Cypress Tree, the Ranch is also home to several other record holding Bald Cypress trees as well as the 2nd and 4th largest Texas Persimmon Trees and also home to the largest Net Leaf Hackberry in the State of Texas. McLean add, “We do tout that we have 4 of the 9 biggest trees in Texas…the 3, 6, 8, 9 and 13 (all Bald Cypress)”. According to McLean, the ranch borders both sides of the Frio River 1.3 miles on both side of the river with ¾ miles of flat water perfect for kayaks and canoes.

Access

Here are several important pieces of information about Frio River Private Access: Access is limited to only 35 people per day. Rates: $35 per person daily; $40 on Saturdays. Rates can vary due to holidays and other dates. Call for current prices. Reservations are recommended by calling in advance 512-5544174

Walk ups are accepted the day of if the total number on property is less than 35 people. Calling ahead is highly encouraged,

Hours: Opening hours are flexible. Hours 10 am to 7 PM. The location is currently limited to day use only.

Owners practice social distancing and allow guests to enjoy the property undisturbed as long as the rules are followed. No fishing, no glass containers, bottles or jars, no dogs, no loud music and no arguing between parties. McLean said that if the question arises, silence takes precedence over music.

Here guests are expected to pack in and pack out their own trash.

There are no public bathroom at this time…we encourage guests to patronize another nearby business in Concan for drinks, supplies, etc… and while there, utilize the facilities.

The Frio River that flows through the property has these areas of interest:

Low Water Crossing: Water flows over the roadway and spills downward. McLean mentioned older couples really like this area and may find this easier to access down a concrete slope, enjoy sitting in chairs on the 1-2 foot deep concrete shelf, and taking a dip in the 4-7 feet deep water in the swimming hole below the spillway Rocks and Ripples: Located downriver from the low water crossing is a shallow area which is favorite for parents with small children.

Blue Hole:

Blue Hole has “2 gravel beaches” allowing easy entry into the hole that ends up being 12-14 feet deep at it’s deepest points with some large rocks above and below the surface for lounging

The river also has shallow areas to accommodate a variety of

“It’s been an honor to have brought the Honey Fest back to life and see it grow and flourish since we started planning the annual event in 2019,” Lacie Huddleson said.

Even with the cancellation of the festival during COVID and last year’s tragedy, we were able to keep our focus on the future and many of our sponsors and vendors have remained loyal to us and are looking forward to this year’s festival.

Because of the growth of the festival and my personal obligations to my business and my family, the festival will be transferred to the Main Street Uvalde program. Lacie Huddleston said, “I will be helping with the planning of the 2023 Honey Festival and I am very grateful that Gloria Resma with Main Street Uvalde will be in charge this year. I look forward to continuing to help out where needed and am excited to see it grow even more in the coming years.”

This year’s festival will be held June 8-10, 2023, in the historic Main Street district. The festival will coincide with 4-Square Friday where Main Street district businesses stay open late. This year there will be a Honey Queen Pageant with a luncheon on Thursday for contestants and sponsors held at the Uvalde Grand Opera House Annex. Friday vendors will set up at the downtown plaza with food, fun and games. Bee in your Bonnet Hat contest will take place Friday evening. On Saturday, June 10 there will be live music and a 5K run. Breakfast with the Bees will also be held on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Uvalde Grand Opera House Annex. Cost is $5 per person and tickets are available at the door. The Honey Bakeoff Contest will be housed at the Tea Room. Contestants must have their baked goods in by 12:30 p.m.

When it’s Serious and Seconds Matter

Seconds count in an emergency. During the summer vacation season, tens of thousands of people come to Concan and the Frio River not to mention Garner State Park and the surrounding Texas Hill Country, Most don’t plan on an emergency happening especially a life threatening one.

According to San Antonio Airlife Emergency Medical Technician Joel Ramirez who with his Airlife Team were dispatched to Garner State Park every weekend for the past three years.

There are two helipads near the Frio River area: One is located near the intersection of Highway 83 and State Road 127 near Josh’s and Andy’s on River Road and another one is located inside Garner State Park.

Depending on the location of the patient, there are a number of locations an Airlife Helicoper can land. “We really rely heavily on the local volunteer fire departments to determine a place for them to land,” Ramirez said.

As far as the most common type of emergency Airlife is called to assist with, Ramirez said most involve trau-

Frio’s Dry Fifty

ma resulting from diving. However, he said they do respond to a lot of calls involving heart attacks, strokes, etc.

Last year, it was so dry that many injuries were due to individuals diving from cliffs into the Frio River that were too shallow exasterbated by last year’s drought.

Divers often misjudge where the water is and dive too close to the bank of the river,

Weather has a lot to do with the frequency of accidents occuring up in the Texas Hill Country, When the weather changes, more accidents usually occur. When the water is really full we get called to a lot of drownings.

He went onto say, as it gets darker, alcohol consumption plays a factor in many of the trauma emergencies.

Ramirez’s team’s home base is located at Garner Field in Uvalde where San Antonio Airlife has its own hanger. One of the team stationed at their hanger is a cat the team adopted but the cat doesn’t board the helicopter.

Ramirez stated that there are always people on call stationed at the base 365 days 7 days a week: a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic.

“We really rely heavily on the local volunteer fire departments to determine a place for us to land,” Ramirez said. From the time a call is received by Airlife they are up in the air in about 10 minutes.

“We work very well with San Antonio Airlife and we know a majority of them on a personal level,” said Concan Fire Department Chief Justin Willis said. When asked who makes the decision whether to call S.A. AirLife for assistance or call a ground based ambulance, Ramirez said EMS will assess the situation

and severity and urgency of the patients’ needs and make that call.

“The big hospitals are usually in San Antonio. Traveling by road on a clear day with no traffic it takes at least an hour and a half to drive to San Antonio from Concan. A helicopter can be there in 35 minutes, If EMS thinks a patient needs to go to San Antonio 9 times out of 10 they call us.” Ramirez said.

Ramirez said.

The AirLife Team does not get any information about the patients until the pilot decides to take the call and that decision is based on the weather.

Ramirez also said “The most important person on our team is our maintenance person.”

The outcomes for the many patients they assist vary.

Ramirez who has his own kids, teaches them that life is uncertain and there are no guarantees from one day to the next.

Many of the Garner State Park employees serve as volunteers for the local fire departments, Ramirez said that the odds are very low their team will happen to know a patient they serve but there is a good chance a volunteer fireman wil know the patient.

Once they arrive, it is really important the their team members remain calm and optimistic as it’s not uncommon for some bystanders to be in panic mode.

The calmness and leadership the first responders bring with them often helps to bring calmness and peace to others including the patent(s) they have come to assist.

Artist interview: Conner Arthur with the Droptines

Conner Arthur is a Concan native, who at 24 years old, is lead singer and founder of the Droptines. After performing earlier this year at the an Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo, Arthur and his band headed up to Austin to play at the SXSW Music Festival, During Spring Break 2023, the Droptines returned to his Texas Hill Country stomping grounds where his band took the stage Friday Night, March 17th at House Pasture and then on a chilly Saturday evening, the band played before a smaller but enthusiastic crowd at Joe Jimmy’s

Before his return to Concan for the 2023 Spring Break Weekend, Frio in Focus Magazine had a chance to interview his on the phone. Conner Arthur is the grandson of the late Kenneth Arthur, the founder of House Pasture Cattle Company and Concan Country Club which is now the Frio Valley Ranch Golf Course. According to Arthur, there are a few families that have deep roots in the Concan area and he is a member of one of them. He recalled growing up and exploring the

hills, creeks around his home. He said he knows where many of the caves are located.

If you’re not familiar with the band’s name, the Droptines, pronounced with a long “I” vowel and

the end which rhymes with the word “dimes” The term “droptine” refers to the rack of a buck which has one or more antler tines facing downwards. For deer hunters, a droptine deer is a coveted hunting prize.

After graduating high school at age 18, Conner left home and hitchhiked across the United States traveling around the United States to places like Portland in the Pacific North East. His journeys then took him to some of the big cities on the East Coast. He would eventually travel in Mexico before heading back home.Throughout his travels, he carried his guitar with him.

When talking about the music and sound of the Droptines, Conner said he writes all the music and since forming the Droptines, the band has released several albums.

The Droptine’s music is raw with emotion and the song lyrics are honestly written, I personally could hear some musical style influence of Bruce Springsteen with a mix of Tom Petty.

After listening to the band live at Joe Jimmy’s on Spring Break, the Droptines did a great job of blending Texas country and rock, like hard rock.

That said, the band has many songs. some upbeat and some just raw with a good dose of pain. The Droptine’s music does not neatly fit any one music category.

Day Hikes: Palo Duro Canyon

Palo Duro Canyon State

Park is our nation’s second-largest canyon, and with a designation like that, you’re guaranteed to have plenty of fun.

Palo Duro Canyon is 800 feet deep, covers 30,000 acres and boasts 15,000 acres of trails to hike and bike. Notable canyon formations include caves and hoodoos. One of the best-known and the major signature feature of the canyon is the Lighthouse Rock. A multiple-use, 6 mi (10 km) round-trip loop trail is dedicated to the formation.

The Lighthouse Trailhead is a large paved parking lot which fills up quickly so arrive early. There are no bathroom facilities at the trailhead, the nearest bathroom is at one

of the campsites or the park store.

The wife and I decided to do this iconic trail. It was a perfect day, 31 degrees, no wind and we got out there early. Trail is marked with blue mileage markers so stay with markers since there are many offshoot trails that parallel the original. Trail is pretty much dirt and sand, no rocks except at wash crossings and approach climb at the end to the lighthouse Rock Platform. Approach climb is steep so keep footing and three points of contact. Trail is rutted at much of mile 2 and 3 due to bike usage. At 1.3-mile marker which also has a heatstroke warning sign, you can see for the first time the lighthouse Rock from here. Awesome sight!!! We also saw hoodoos and other beautiful rock formations as we made our way to the Lighthouse.

The Canyon walls and Lighthouse are a rich reddish earth with streaks of white coloring, large and quite impressive. It stretches roughly 310 feet into the air and overlooks the seemingly endless Palo Duro Canyon.

At the lighthouse formation be aware of footing since your on a meza platform high above canyon floor. This is an awesome trail, many great sites and scenic views. Best trail in canyon… really!!!!!

Get out and hike!

Once they arrive, it is really important the their team members remain calm and optimistic as it’s not uncommon for some bystanders to be in panic mode.

The calmness and leadership the first responders bring with them often help to bring calmness and peace to others including the patient(s) they have come to assist. No matter how dire the situation for a patient, the medics accompanying the team will show optimism. calmness and professionalism.

“ I’ve been in situations where the patient is flipping out, the bystanders are flipping out and the police are flipping out. There is a patient dying in front of you and the nurse approaches and asks, How may I help you’” he said.

involving local businesses, organizations and. as well as the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office and the Uvalde County Bureau of Operations Management. With over 50,000 eclipse tourists expected to arrive in Uvalde County towards the Path of Totality in Uvalde County and the Texas Hill Country for the April 8th, 2024 eclipse, officials and businesses alike are preparing for increased traffic and demand for food, water, and lodging,

Fortunately, other towns like Carbondale, Illinois, have experienced the crowds of people who came to see the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse over the Central United States and local businesses and officials are learning from their “playbook”and have notes for what to expect.

What is an unknown is how many people will come to the Texas Hill Country to see Saturday, October 14th, 2023 Annular Eclipse.

It is reasonable to expect an uptick in tournism for the fall eclipse but its a bit of a mystery.

For the Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th, 2014, eclipse tourists are expected to arrive on the Friday before that Monday, Uvalde and the Texas Hill Country River Region are making plans for concerts, festivals, shopping and entertainment for those in the area waiting for that big moment of totality.

THCRR has already ordered and recently received a big order of eclipse glasses not only for the Uvalde County Visitor’s Center but also ordered for other interested businesses, lodges and organizations to sell.

If you plan on coming to see either eclipse, it’s important to plan ahead for the trip and make your preparations in advance.

For those who live here like me and are planning to “stay-cation” for the eclipses, realize that due to the increased traffic it may take longer to male your regular commute,

As it was mentioned in one of the Task Force Planning Meetings, if your business runs out of something on the weekend before the Total Solar Eclipse in April, don’t rely on deliveries to replenish those products or supplies as traffic will likely be heavy on all main highways and roadways,

“ I soak the clouds in diesel and I set the sky on fire,” from the song, Feed My Dog

Several of the Droptine’s songs seem to tell a story about real life situations and people while not quite meeting the definition of a ballad. The song “ New Girl” comes to mind: Bill of Sale, another Droptine’s song has a darker feel to it. Arthur admits he a Christian but not a good one. He said in the interview that there are good decent people that live in the Hill Country but some are just bad and are out to hurt others. He spoke on stage Saturday night at Joe Jimmy’s saying it’s important for the good to overcome the bad, Another song by the Droptines, which won me over on the band: Feed My Dog.

In my interview with Conner, he said the song is about going out, taking important risks in a dangerous world. He said you never know if something out there in the world is going to take you out. In that case, the title lyric comes in.

“Feed

My Dog,”

Conner says the band does have a loyal fan base. He said that some fans have come up with their own interpretation of what the songs’ lyrics mean which might be different from his. He seemed to be OK with that.

According to Conner, he and the band members of the Droptones work together well as a team creating their own sound. Regardless of where the road leads for the Droptines they bring an authentic sound with a good helping of Concan flavor in their sound.

The Resort Known as Concan

I never forget how blessed I am to live and work in the Uvalde County Community. We have such beautiful wildlife and natural sights to see and appreciate, which God made for all of us to enjoy. I watch as hundreds of thousands of people come across the state only to spend a few days taking in the things we take for granted daily.

Concan as a community has worked well together to offer such an amazing experience for everyone to enjoy. Being such a great host the fame of Concan has grown fast and far as we see new and more people coming every year. Over the years many locals have joked by the time we get them familiar with the do’s and don’ts it’s time for them to return home and we have to start with the next group. Unfortunately, this is just a reality for the life of Concan Residents, Business Owners, and Law Enforcement within Uvalde County.

I will say upfront the idea of the law is compliance, and when you were not compliant there are penalties for breaking the law. Sometimes compliance with the law is a friendly reminder that what you are doing violates the state law also known as a verbal warning. Sometimes its an escalate to receiving a citation which can make vacation much more expensive or even worse, your choices can

cause you to have to spend the night in jail, post a bond, and later return not for vacation but your day in court.

I promise this article is not just a great headline which never provides answers to the questions as so many stories on social media are today. A great headline to draw you in, but what you wanted to know is never there. The short answer to the question asked is NO!

times the confusion we hear is, I thought it was all one big resort. You are not driving on private roads, but rather on County Roads which all state laws apply.

Every day, hundreds of times a day during the busy season of Concan, we all see people stopping at Kenneth Arthur Crossing or the other crossings in Uvalde County, just to unload some tubes, passengers, and ice chests.

Whenever I walk up to the driver the conversation goes the same way. “Good Afternoon, you cannot stop on the bridge to unload”. “ I know, but we’re almost done”.

The driver will now holler at everyone unloading the truck “hurry up” and then look back and say “sorry, it won’t take but a second.”

The truly frustrating part is not telling everyone for the 100th time they cannot stop on the bridge, it’s the fact it’s a two-lane road and at best one lane of traffic can continue moving while we have a line of cars ½ mile back because someone prioritized their own time over everyone else’s safety.

Remember first responders have to drive the same roads as you to get to the emergency. Many of the first responders in Concan are volunteers who may be responding in their own vehicle and now we are delaying emergency services in critical times because someone selfishly chose to stop on the bridge and unload.I know that’s a bit harsh, but it’s not just one person per day.

I love visiting Concan, but I just use the shuttle service. We have become a generation of convenience, and why would I try to figure out where I can and can’t park?

Have you seen the hundreds of No-Parking Signs?

When I’m done floating the river I still have to walk the mile back to my car, hopefully not losing my keys while I was hanging out or floating in the river, when I can just hire someone to haul my tubes and drop me off and pick me up. That’s just my two cents, but since I’m writing this, I get to add it.

Probably as you are reading this, someone is loading up friends and family in the truck going to the river. All the adults will be inside the cab of the truck and the children will be riding in the bed of the truck. The instructions will

Why? Do we need to worry that you might drive to Texas, strip off your shirt, put on a Viking hat, and storm the Uvalde County Courthouse in protest against my reel?

Was it because my legs were showing? Even the Pentecostals left me alone on this one, bro. Save your anger. I really do hope you are not as hard on your daughters as you were on me – you know that complete stranger out there in the metaverse.

Feet: Now these messages were my most favorite of all the messages I received. I have read dozens of memes on Facebook about selling pictures of your feet to raise money during these tough economic times and laughed hysterically, but I never knew how real this whole foot fetish thing was until I was inundated with one request after the other for pictures of my feet. WHAT?!?!?!?

I still can’t believe so many people wanted pictures of my feet. Mind you, my feet are cute, but I don’t think I’ll be getting any calls from agents to do magazine ads any time soon. I like bikers, beards, and tattoos, so I’m not going to judge anyone for what they like, but I do a good job of controlling my impulses when it comes asking strangers on the internet to send me pictures of their motorcycles. En serio? Mis pies? Ya!

I know the title of my story made you think the whole thing was going to be about feet, but it’s really about the consequences of putting yourself out there. When you post something on social media – it’s out there – like out there for the whole world to see – as well as for the whole wide world to push back with their opinions. Most people were kind. Some people were funny. And one dude that was just mean af. No matter how pure my original intent,

there will always be an army of souls out there wanting to put me in my place and cast judgement. When I posted that short video clip, I never expected anyone to judge me or for that matter like me so much as to propose marriage! I don’t think I was ready for all of it and I learned a valuable lesson: Cover your damn feet!

Like I always say, do not follow me for relationship advice, but if you want to see the reel I talk about in this story, find me on social media @leighlatrelle. You can email comments to me at leighlatrelle@gmail.com.

Healing at the River

Life had not gone as I expected and I found myself in a dry place. My heart needed healing and my body needed rest. The grief of losing my husband of 30 years, the pressures of living alone, working, overseeing care for my aging parents and watching their rapid decline had taken its toll.

Maybe your circumstances are different but you can relate. Perhaps you have come to the Frio River to get away from your hectic life.

Being by the river, ocean, or lake has been an important part of my healing process. Let me encourage you to take some time on your vacation to restore your soul. Our soul is our mind, will and emotions. It is easy to just go through the motions of life and not tend to our soul.

Psalms 23:2-3 (NIV) states, “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, the refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.”

God in his compassion for the adversity and hardships we face in life, tells us to follow Him to the quite waters so we can hear his voice and refresh our heart.

I love being outside and thinking deeply about life situations, reflecting and praying. Sometimes I listen to Christian music or music that is encouraging or uplifting. Other times I journal, read my Bible or listen for what God might want to speak to me. He speaks a lot more than we realize; we just need to get quiet with him by the water.

God is right there for you when you need answers to a problem, healing for your heart, or simply a place to cast all your worries and cares. Let me encourage you to take some to just sit with Jesus by the water. I’ve found it helps me to see things a little clearer. Ask him for his perspective on your life. God always sees my life in a better way than I do.

Job 28:11(NIV) “They search the sources of the rivers and bring hidden things to light.”

You are precious to him and God longs to help you and see things from his perspective. Perhaps it would be

helpful to journal your thoughts, concerns, fears and cast them on God. Ask him to carry your sorrow and pain.

Psalms 55:22 (NIV) also instructs to cast our burdens on to God. It says, “Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”

He is a big God and can handle your problems and fill you with hope and joy. The word cast means to forcefully throw. Throughout my life, I’ve spent many days at the river casting my grief, pain and concerns to God. He has always been faithful to carry the heavy load that has worn me out.

I pray your time at the river refreshes you and you reap the benefits the promise found in Isaiah 41:18. “I will make rivers flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into springs.

Let me encourage you to let your time at the river be a healing time. God adores you, so let him restore your soul.

Tips for Planning to See the Eclipses

Book accomodations early: Book lodging early. Reservations for motels, vacation homes, cabins and camping sights will likely be sold out months in advance. Make arrangements now or about one year ahead of time.

• Plan to arrive before the day of the eclipse: According to Cole, there were many on highways stuck in traffic headed to the eclipse path that didn’t make it in time to reach the totality path,

• Purchase approved solar eclipse glasses: During the brief moments of totality, it should be safe to view the fully darkened face of the sun. However, in the time where the Moon is in progress of moving over the sun when the sun’s face is partially eclipsed one MUST wear proper solar glasses to protect one’s eyes. Viewing the sun with the naked eye or with regular sunglasses can cause permenent damage or blindness to the eyes.

• Avoid photographing the sun or the sun in a partial eclipse phase unless you KNOW what you are doing. Even a 99% eclipsed sun can cause eye damage or damage to camera or video equipment damage unless using a proper solar filter.

• Bring adequate food and water: Restaurants may run out of food at times due to the demand.

• Plan for higher prices: Due to the crowds coming for

the event and increased demand for goods and services, prices may be more than regular prices.

• Be patient and have fun! Eclipse chasers and tourists will likely travel from around the United States and the world to see this event. Seeing a total solar exclipse is for most, is a once in a lifetime event. Prepare to meet new people and to share the adventure with others. Plan for alternate viewing locations along the totality path if the weather or other factors interfere with or interfere with your original plans.

“Get Your Frio On” Resort

Formerly a Christian Retreat Camp

The property on 20142 Texas Highway 127 in Concan, Tx which is now named “Get Your Frio On” was once a Christian retreat and called “Yahweh Retreat which was a Church Camp” owned by the Collins Family. The area on the east side of the property was cleared for a large campfire area forall the guests. This area now is great for star gazing with no lights on that area. be something similar to, “don’t stand up, stay sitting down” and when they get in the cab the driver will tell everyone else, don’t worry I’ll drive slow.

The potentially fatal mistake is, everyone else isn’t going to drive slowly. Imagine you are driving 15 miles per hour because you’re going slow, and the other car is driving the 30 miles per hour speed limit when they look down at their phone or staring off at the scenery when they hit you head-on. Now you just hit a brick wall at 45 miles per hour, and everything including the children who are un-seat belted in the bed of the truck are traveling at 45 miles per hour. Texas Law is abundantly clear you must be over the age of 18 to ride in the bed of the pickup.

When we see this violation and conduct a traffic stop many times the people plead their innocence stating they thought this was all a private resort and these were not public roads. I cannot emphasize this enough, you rent your cabin or RV space from a resort when you leave the particular property you rented such as the driveway or gate, you are now more than likely on a public roadway. If you are reading this and questioning am “is the road I drive on a public roadway or is this part of the resort”, please err on the side of caution.

I think we can all agree when coming to Concan for vacation all of us here want you to have a safe and responsible vacation of a lifetime. Fortunately enough, almost everyone who comes will.

We all have an investment in the future of Concan, obey the laws, pick up your trash and be kind to others, so we never lose what so many before us have cherished.

The Cart Barn Golfer

Well into year two working at the Frio Valley Ranch Golf Course located in the Mountain Valley community of Concan, I often tell people that my office views are amazing. That’s because while I do spend a good amount of time at the Cart Barn, my work often takes me on to the course itself which I consider to be my open air office.

The water feature located in the heart of the 18 hole course is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest places in Concan.

While the natural beauty of the course and the area is hard to beat, I’ve found it’s the golfers who add a lot of joy and humor to my work experience.

During the off season, it’s always a treat to see a regular I know with his dog Arlo who comes to play at the course with his buddies. When asked how Arlo’s golf game is, He answered by saying Arlo always plays at par.

It was an enjoyable round of golf with lots of laughs and great company. Congrats dad on shooting your first round in the 60’s. (Not the score card…….HAPPY BIRTHDAY)

I’d say about 98 percent of golfers who come play are great folks, have a good attitude and love the game of golf.

When they arrive I’m usually outside with the carts as they are getting ready to hit Hole 1. Sometimes I engage in a little light hearted chit chat with a few tall tales mixed in for humor. For example, I will sometimes tell golfers not to worry about the mountain lion on the back 9 as it’s already been fed. One day I said this and followed with, “There’s actually no mountain lion on the course.” The golfer replied “...that you know of.”

Golfers in the summer season often book tee-times as early as

possible in order to play before the sweltering afternoon heat sets in.

Working on the range crew at Frio Valley Ranch, start times in the summer can be as early as 6:30 AM which will make you into a morning person if you weren’t already. I have nothing to complain about though as the Green Team who maintain the Course start work an hour or two before that!

Golfers who stay up late the night before partying often struggle to make those early morning tee times. Bloody Mary’s are a popular mixed drink for many golfers.

Many Golfers also like to drink beer some ordering a 6 pack iced down as they hit the course between 8 AM and 9 AM, After the carts com in it’s my job to take them back to the clean barn to clean them and put them away

to recharge, Oftentimes the scorecards are left on the steering wheel of the cart. I’ve seen many with scores in the 80’s which is really good. I’m working to break 100.
