This issue’s cover transports you into the heart of Eggemeyer’s General Store, a cherished San Angelo landmark nestled in the historic downtown district. The photo captures a vibrant display of merchandise inside the store’s original brick walls, where time seems to stand still. From vintage collectibles to modern-day treasures, Eggemeyer’s blends the old and new in perfect harmony. One of the most striking features is the classic car, parked right in the middle of the store—a nod to the store’s unique and eclectic style, symbolizing the rich history that this beloved local institution continues to preserve.
Founded decades ago, Eggemeyer’s General Store is more than just a shop; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of small-town businesses. The historic building, with its weathered charm and old-world ambiance, creates a shopping experience that’s both nostalgic and timeless. Whether it’s for a one-of-a-kind gift, homemade candies, or a stroll through San Angelo’s past, Eggemeyer’s continues to be a cornerstone of the community, welcoming locals and visitors alike into its enchanting world.

San Angelo Bucket List: Must Do Events
Certain events are annual staples in San Angelo - the gems that make living here unique and fun. Here are some of the ones that should be on any San Angelo bucket list.
SAN ANGELO STOCK SHOW
The San Angelo Stock Show was established in 1932 as an opportunity to promote Agriculture to West Texas Boys, and eventually girls. The show started with cattle and breeding sheep classes and the market shows were referred to as “fat” shows. Since then the San Angelo Livestock Show has grown to be one of the largest junior shows in the nation. This even features over 40 different contests, competitions, and events for youth including cattle, swine, sheep, goats, llamas, and rabbits; there is something for just about everyone!
Though the foundation of the show has remained the same, it has evolved into a major show production. Students from across the State of Texas compete for massive prize monies, banners, buckles, and a spot in the coveted premium sale.
Besides livestock, the show features ag speaking and mechanics contests as well as robotics competition.
SAN ANGELO RODEO
The inaugural San Angelo Rodeo was held in 1934, three years after the first “fat” stock show. Rodeo in those days differs greatly from what it is today, but one truth holds true: San Angelo hosts a rodeo.
Currently held in the Foster Communications Coliseum on the San Angelo Fairgrounds, the San Angelo Rodeo Committee is proud to offer attendees one of the best true rodeos that spectators can find today. San Angelo prides itself on offering a quality event from contestants, to stock, to production, and so on. Sure, there are some lights and smoke to make the event a true production, but what we offer is a rodeo.
Today, the San Angelo Rodeo is a PRCA and WPRA sanctioned event open to cowboys and cowgirls across the world that are members or permit holders of their respective organizations. What does it mean that we allow permit holders to participate? It means that great cowboys looking to
get their first big win get that opportunity right here, while many other rodeos only take the top end cowboys in the world standings. Everyone starts somewhere, so why not San Angelo?
The rodeo features rough stock events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, and bareback riding, as well as timed events like team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and women’s barrel racing.
Another unique feature of San Angelo is our crowd. West Texans love rodeo as much, if not more, than any other group of people, and they know what a good rodeo is. This is one of the only, if not only, location in the world that tie-down ropers get a louder cheer from the crowd than a bull rider. The fan base truly understands the work cowboys and cowgirls put into this career and stand behind them completely.
SIMPLY TEXAS BLUE FESTIVAL
For the past 14 years, on one Saturday in May, Oakes Street gets shut down. Lawn chairs and umbrellas are set up in the roadway as 10,000 or more people attend the Simply Texas Blues Festival. The daylong event features performances by several blues bands and solo acts competing for a chance to advance to the final round of the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.
The festival is put on by the San Angelo Blues Society, which was established to promote, teach about and preserve blues music. The organization also awards music scholarships for local musicians to attend Angelo State University
SHOWDOWN IN SAN ANGELO
The drag boat engines roar to life, drivers watching the flag before they take off, racing on the waters of Lake Nasworthy.
The race runs on a west-to-east course in a channel that allows spectators to find spots along both sides of the lake, at Spring Creek Park and Grassy Meadows.
Pro and Sportsman boats are featured in the races, some moving up to 250 mph and throwing water 50 feet in the air.
Showdown in San Angelo is now in San Angelo in June and September at Spring Creek Marina.
A STAR SPANGLED BANNER
Many communities put on big 4th of July celebrations, but A Star Spangled Banner event has the largest firework show in the area. The concert takes place at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial RiverStage and draws more than 25,000 people. The concert includes live music and a firework extravaganza. The concert includes a selection of patriotic music along with Fort Concho cannons firing.
Gates open for the event at noon and community band begins playing at 6:30 p.m. and fireworks at dark. General admission is free, but reserved seating is available. For more information contact joe@ hyderinteractive.com or info@dtsa.org
CONCHO KENNEL CLUB
A fun, free, annual event in San Angelo is the Concho Kennel Club’s Dog Show and Vendor Event. There are typically three separate competitions held on Saturday and Sunday the first weekend of November at the Foster Communications Coliseum.
There are hundreds of purebred dogs of any of the currently 201 AKC recognized breeds. Come cheer for your favorites. While here visit the quality Vendors’ booths and stop by the Raffle tables to take a chance at winning one of the many items. To put a smile on your face, be sure to catch the Beginner Puppy competition. The clumsy, goofy still developing 4 to 6 month old puppies get to participate as they clamber around the ring. Before you leave, stop by the Concho Kennel Club table to chat and pick up information on our activities that range from meetings, to classes with your pooch, and AKC Reunite microchipping clinics. For more information check out our website or our FaceBook page: ConchoKennelClub.com, Concho Kennel Club on Facebook, or email at: ConchoKennelClub@gmail.com
CHRISTMAS AT FORT CONCHO
Kick off the holiday season by visiting Fort Concho’s largest annual event. Held during the first full weekend in December, Christmas at Old Fort Concho transforms the fort’s forty acres and twenty-four buildings into a winter wonderland. Each day at Fort Concho visitors can experience the Winter Rendezvous, campsites with hundreds of re-enactors and period traders who bring the 1800s to life. During daylight hours the many troops on the Parade Ground will drill, ride, and shoot their weapons. The artillery demonstrations (blanks-of course) will definitely catch your attention! Inside the fort’s many original buildings, merchants and artisans from across Texas and the Southwest offer many items to start your Christmas shopping. A Food Court will offer various food options; strolling musicians and staged musical activity will keep the grounds lively, and the Children’s Areas will provide many crafts and activities free for all youngsters.
CONCHO CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION
In 1994, a Christmas Lights Walking Tour was presented to the San Angelo community in the El Paseo de Santa Angela area featuring several minor lighted scenes. In 1995 twenty-one sponsor Christmas greeting cards were added. In 1996, the opportunity to expand the event developed with a new and permanent home along River Concho Drive. The tour thus evolved from a walking tour to a driving tour.
In 1997, the Concho Christmas Celebration Opening Ceremony took place at the Bill Aylor Sr. Memorial River Stage. The ceremony featured performances by the San Angelo Community Band and student choirs from the San Angelo Independent School District. The Concho Christmas Light Tour now displayed seven major and twelve minor lighted scenes, twenty-four lighted angels, forty-six lighted decorations, thirty-six sponsor Christmas cards and over two million lights. In 1998, community radio station KCSA-97.1 FM offered holiday music through a
community radio station to enhance the experience of those driving through the tour.
The Concho Christmas Committee added new lighted scenes and accessories each year. “The Tunnel of Lights”, one of the most dramatic Concho Christmas attractions, was completed in December 2001. Hirschfeld Steel designed and fabricated the hundred foot-long tunnel which continues to be a major signature feature. Dubbed “Community Hosts,” business and volunteer groups now became actively engaged in Concho Christmas Celebration. Throughout December, the hosts serve as greeters, passing out candy canes and collecting donations from guests.
2001 featured the first “Lights of Christmas Parade”. To supplement the parade the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony moved from the River Stage to the corner of Chadbourne Street and Concho Avenue in 2004.
By 2006, “The Twelve Days of Christmas” was declared complete
with the purchase of “Two Turtle Doves, Three French Hens, Nine Ladies Dancing, Eight Maids a Milking and the Twelve Drummers.”
Also in 2006, Concho Christmas joined forces with the San Angelo Lizards to offer a non-competitive run through the light display. The event gained popularity and was labeled “Run Rudolph Run.”
Another partnership blossomed as First Christian Church offered a live nativity scene presentation during three weekends in 2007. During that same year, community radio station KCSA 95.7 FM, which had been airing holiday music, expanded into year-round programming (now KCSA 97.1 FM) broadcasting music of the 1950’s as well as community concerts provided by the San Angelo Symphony and the Angelo State University Chorus.
Today, the Concho Christmas Tour of Lights is a 2.5-mile drive along the banks of the Concho River and lit by over three million lights. Visitors remark that lights reflecting on the river appear to duplicate the amazing displays.
Presently, Concho Christmas Celebration has become a cherished tradition with locals and visitors alike. conchokennelclub.com

A Year of Transformation at San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene
When Pastor Brad Griffin stepped into the role of lead pastor at San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene in August 2023, he not only came home to his home church but he hoped to bring with him not just a passion for the Word, but a heart deeply attuned to the Holy Spirit. Over the past year, the congregation has witnessed a transformation, characterized by both spiritual renewal and community engagement.
From his first Sunday, Pastor Brad’s vision was clear: to see the church thrive not just within its walls but also in the broader community of San Angelo. His messages, filled with warmth and conviction, resonated with both long-time members and newcomers alike. But it wasn’t just his words that ignited change—it was the evident movement of the Holy Spirit among the people.
As the weeks turned into months, there was a shift in the air. Worship services became more vibrant, with a renewed sense of purpose and expectation. Congregants reported feeling more connected to one another and more inspired in their personal walks with Christ. The church, which had been steady for years, began to see growth as new families joined, drawn by the genuine love and sense of community they found at San Angelo First.
This growth was not limited to Sunday mornings. The church turned its focus outward, to see San Angelo not just as a place to live, but as a mission field. The church’s primary focus has been its partnership with McGill Elementary School. Recognizing a need within the school, the congregation adopted McGill Elementary as a ministry focus. They committed to loving and supporting the students, teachers, and staff in tangible ways. From providing school supplies and backpacks (96 to be precise) to hosting appreciation events for the teachers, the church has made it clear that McGill Elementary is not just a project—it’s a part of their family.
It’s impossible to talk about the past year at San Angelo First without mentioning the work of the Holy Spirit. There’s a sense of anticipation in the air, a feeling that God is doing something new and powerful in this place. Testimonies of healing, both physical and emotional, have become more common. Small groups have seen deeper connections form, and prayer meetings are filled with earnest intercession.
The congregation is united in its mission (Matthew 28:19-20) and its vision to “be a faithful church, trusting in God’s Word, equipping us to reach people with the love of Jesus.”. This, along
with the undeniable presence of the Holy Spirit is driving the church. As they look ahead, there’s a collective excitement about what God has in store for the future. San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene is no longer just a building on a street corner—it’s a beacon of hope and love in the community, shining brightly for all to see.
As they celebrate this first year under Pastor Brad’s guidance, the members of San Angelo First Church of the Nazarene are filled with gratitude. The journey has only just begun, and there’s a shared belief that the best is yet to come. With a foundation built on faith, love, and the movement of the Holy Spirit, this church is poised to continue making a profound impact in San Angelo and beyond.

We are a Christian congregation where believers of all ages and backgrounds are united in their belief that God loves all people and wants to have a life with them through faith in Jesus.
God’s everlasting love for us that is found in the death and resurrection of Jesus is preached and taught among us each Sunday and on other days throughout the year in worship and Bible study. We gather together to hear of God’s mercy and forgiveness; to lay our burdens before him in prayer, to thank him for all his blessings and tender mercies; and to encourage one another in our faith.
Members of the congregation have a strong desire to share with families of the community, the same love, forgiveness, peace, and hope found in Jesus through the ministry of our school; open to all.
We would love for you to become part of our church and school family and join us in sharing the love of Christ with our neighbors here in San Angelo and indeed, throughout the world.

Trinity has been providing a Christ-Centered education to parents who value a Christian education for their children.
This year, Trinity will serve the community by offering a Christ-Centered education to students 12 months old12th grade. Trinity has always valued the importance of building relationships with students and their families. Small class size, frequent parent-teacher communication, and opportunity for parental involvement help build those relationships. Teachers, like parents, have high expectations for their students and encourage them to excel. We want them equipped to handle whatever challenges confront them in the future. We strive to integrate the faith into all we do – memorizing Bible verses, attending worship, praying, encouraging and supporting one another.
We believe each student is blessed with gifts and abilities, we treasure the opportunity to work with parents to help students discover theirs. Instruction in core subject areas occurs each morning with fine arts, foreign language, and
physical education each afternoon. Bible Study, prayer and worship are part of each student’s daily activities. Teachers use the most current technology to facilitate learning, including interactive display boards, 3D printing, VR sets, robotics, and interactive projector activities. High school students attend core academic classes until 1:00, with the option of electives and dual credit classes in the afternoon. Students may participate in individual sports, team sports, and/or e-sports.
We look forward to next year and the new challenges and opportunities it will bring. Trinity Lutheran School is located at 3516 Lutheran Way. Our phone number is 325-947-1275. HL Turnbow: Legacy of Integrity and Adventure in San Angelo
Deep in the heart of San Angelo, Texas, lived a man whose life was as multifaceted as the community he served. HL Turnbow, a name synonymous with dedication, adventure, hard work, and entrepreneurship, left an indelible mark on the city and beyond. Many knew him as the big smile and welcoming voice behind the counter at West Texas Game Feeders. As a fire captain, outdoorsman, small business owner, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, HL’s legacy is a testament to a life lived to the fullest and a relentless spirit that continues to inspire.
HL’s journey began just South of San Angelo, in Eldorado,Texas, where he grew up riding motorcycles, and wearing the wheels off of his skates, skating around the courthouse as it was the ‘only concrete in town’. His early adult years consisted of business school, marrying the love of his life, and seismograph work throughout Texas and as far off as Moab, Utah. After his adventures in seismology, HL and his young family settled in San Angelo. HL and his wife then leased and managed the Lorance swimming pool North of town. HL always loved keeping a pool whether it was for business or at his home. Shortly after his Lorance pool days, HL became a fireman with the San Angelo Fire Department.
In the firehouse, HL rose through the ranks to become a respected Fire Captain. His leadership and bravery not only protected lives and properties but also earned him the admiration of his colleagues. HL’s tenure with the San Angelo Fire Department was marked by his vertical rescue safety and innovation, and his fostering of camaraderie
within the department. Annually, HL traveled to Texas A&M Fire Training School to teach vertical rescue; there wasn’t a year that he did so without getting postcards and t-shirts for family back home. He retired from the San Angelo Fire Department after 34 years of service.
Away from the firehouse, HL's thirst for adventure found an outlet on the racetrack. An avid motorcycle rider and car enthusiast, he embraced the thrill of speed and competition. HL helped organize the first tractor pulls, and participated in the early off-road poker runs held in San Angelo. His passion for racing was matched only by his love for the great outdoors. As
an accomplished fisherman and hunter, HL spent countless hours in the country. An event he looked forward to most was his annual fishing trip to Lake Amistad with his closest friends, sons, and eventually grandkids. These pursuits not only provided personal fulfillment but also laid the groundwork for his journey into the business world.
In addition to his public service and adventurous exploits, HL was a devoted family man. As a loving father and grandfather, he instilled in his children and grandchildren the values of hard work, integrity, and an appreciation for nature. These values became the cornerstone of his legacy business, which was founded with a vision to serve the hunting community of the Concho Valley. Starting from humble beginnings, HL’s company grew into a respected and influential player in the
hunting industry, renowned for its highquality products and unwavering customer service.
HL and his wife Dixie purchased West Texas Game Feeders after following up on an ad in the newspaper. They looked forward to the fun, part time business keeping them busy during their retirement years. Well that was an understatement, to say the least.
From its modest beginnings in a small garage, West Texas Game Feeders has grown into a thriving business, serving customers not only in San Angelo but also across the state and beyond. Their range of products, including gravity-fed feeders, programmable timers, solar-powered systems, and toptier hunting blinds has set the standard for reliability and durability in the industry. Their signature feeder, the Ground Hugger, was the first low-profile feeder on the market. Within a few years all major feeder companies were following their lead and now low-profile feeders are an industry standard. The Ground Hugger is varmint proof, easy-to-fill, comes with a lifetime warranty and is fully manufactured on site. The craftsmanship and innovation behind these feeders is unmatched.
West Texas Game Feeders stands as a testament to the region's rich outdoor heritage. Established over three decades ago, this family-owned company has been a lifeline for the local hunting community, providing top-quality game feeders and accessories to hunters, ranchers, and wildlife enthusiasts alike. West Texas Game Feeders goes above and beyond with the service
provided to its area hunters and ranchers by being one of the sole locations to repair and upkeep feeders and hunting equipment. There isn’t a feeder problem too small, and rarely one that can’t be solved by the Turnbow family at West Texas Game Feeders. Most days you can still find three generations of HL’s family running his legacy business. Whether in store or out on the ranch, West Texas Game Feeders is sure to help. One of HL’s favorite parts of the business was maintaining feeders on area ranches. Filling and keeping feeders operational for hunters was a lot of work but he always managed to get it done, with a smile on his face. As his family does today, HL loved being in and lessees the operational when As San Angelo's
hunting blinds, West Texas Game Feeders continues to uphold HL's legacy of integrity, innovation, and dedication to customer satisfaction. This family owned and operated business, with their professional knowledge and commitment to excellence in everything they do, are poised to lead the way in shaping the future of wildlife management and outdoor recreation in the region for generations to come.
Today, the business stands as a tribute to HL's entrepreneurial spirit and dedication. It serves hunters and outdoor enthusiasts across the region, continuing to embody the principles he held dear. HL's life story is a rich tapestry of courage, adventure, and family values, woven together to create a lasting impact on San Angelo and the broader community. His legacy lives on through his family, his business, and the countless lives he touched along the way, reminding us all of the extraordinary difference one individual can make.

Meals For The Elderly: Celebrating 50 Years of Service to Our Homebound Neighbors
For numerous older adults who are homebound, living alone can be both challenging and isolating. They often struggle with meal preparation, accessing nutritious food, and maintaining social connections. Meals For The Elderly serves as a critical support system for the homebound in our community. Our mission is to empower individuals of our community to maintain autonomy within the comfort of their homes by delivering nourishing meals, coordinating services, and providing personal interaction
Founded by Mary Alice Rodgers in 1974, Meals The Elderly began when she identified a need for homedelivered meals in our area. On August 1, 1974, four volunteers delivered 16 meals to homebound seniors San Angelo. Over the past five decades, the organization has grown to serve nearly 1,200 individuals and has expanded its services to Tom Green, Irion, and Concho Counties, including Miles, TX. Currently, over 300 volunteers not only deliver meals but also provide essential social interaction.
This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Meals For The Elderly, which we are celebrating with various events and activities to honor our recipients, volunteers, staff, and supporters. We commenced with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in February, held a volunteer appreciation luncheon in April, and will culminate the celebrations with a Gala in November. Our Golden Gala, scheduled for Thursday, November 14, 2024, will highlight the achievements of the past 50 years, featuring a walking History of Meals, a specially produced video, and the presentation of the inaugural Mary Alice Rodgers Making a Difference Award.
As the older population continues to grow, so does the demand for Meals For The Elderly’s services. We remain committed to addressing the needs of both current and future recipients while ensuring that no adult experiences hunger or loneliness and that all our homebound neighbors receive the dignity and respect they deserve. posts & promos, as well as a part of the boutique’s alterations. She also manages the listings, sales & shipping for an eBay Store ‘bridallure’. Growing up a bit of a “Tom Boy”, Shireen now finds it ironic that she “Dresses dolls for a living!”
JACKSON SQUARE BUSINESS CENTER, Retail, Office & Warehouse Spaces
Located in the 3100 Block of Sherwood Way, Jackson Square was developed by her parents into the current Business Center in the 1970’s from what was originally a 1950’s building for Mead’s Fine Bread Bakery. In 2018, the center became Shireen’s responsibility. She has taken great pride in overseeing numerous major updates, repairs & renovations, leading to a high occupancy rate & enjoys collaborating with the other business owners. A varied mix of twenty-four small businesses, both new & long term, currently make up the Jackson Square Business Family, and in 2025 will be the expanded location for Jackson’s Boutique!
SHIREEN WISHES TO OFFER A SINCERE “THANK YOU, WEST TEXAS!”
In 2025, Jacksons will celebrate 73 years & Jackson Square 50 plus years of family business. None of that would be possible without the support of loyal, repeat customers, dedicated employees & the occupancy of many small businesses.
