IINSPIRATION N T EBY R I O R SUMMERHOUSE PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

When Lisa Palmer, owner and principal designer of SummerHouse, stepped into her clients’ home, she was captivated with the architecture of the space. “The large room has a tall ceiling with beautiful dark beams. The ceiling slopes down, creating this asymmetrical line that is unusual, but really lovely,” says Lisa. “The ceiling and walls are stucco and the floors are bricked, which adds texture to the incredible architecture.” Lisa created a warm and cozy space for the family and their beloved dog. “I knew my fabrics and materials had to be durable,” says Lisa. “The palette of stone, charcoal, chalk and brown works beautifully with the beams and walls, and the commissioned painting pulls it together perfectly.”

“Without Mississippi, there would be no American music.” This bold, yet truthful declaration was made by Bob Santelli, Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum® at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. “We have literally changed the world,” says Allan Hammons, President of Hammons & Associates, Inc., in Greenwood, Mississippi. “Many people are not aware that blues music was born right here in Mississippi. The man credited with creating the blues, Charley Patton, spent much of his time in Dockery, right outside of Cleveland.” The powerful voices and memorable guitar licks of the blues heavily influenced many other forms of music. Country, rock and roll, soul, R&B, pop and hip-hop evolved from our beloved blues. But Mississippi’s profound influence on the world of music did not stop there. “Country music was born with Jimmy Rodgers, who was from Meridian. Bo Diddley is acclaimed as the founder of rock and roll. Elvis Presley, the King of Rock and Roll, country star Tammy Wynette and B.B. King, the King of the Blues, were all from Mississippi,” Allan says with awe. “Leontyne Price, a phenomenal opera singer, was the only person to ever receive a forty-five minute standing ovation. The lead singer of the Temptations was from Mississippi, and Mary Wilson, of Greenville, was a founding member of the Supremes. When you look around and realize that so many groups we listen to have strong Mississippi connections, it is quite remarkable.” A few years ago, Billy Nowell, the Mayor of Cleveland, and the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce approached Allan about building a music museum in their city. Allan helped establish the highly successful B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola, and they admired his work and dedication. “The Los Angeles GRAMMY Museum® had been contemplating a second location beyond L.A.,” Allan says. “I asked for some latitude to think, then I pitched the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to build a GRAMMY Museum® here.” It worked. Cleveland will soon be home to the only official GRAMMY Museum® location outside of Los Angeles. A sleek, impressive 27,000 square foot facility covers four and a half acres of the Delta State University campus. The GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi is set to be the most technologically advanced music museum in the world. Fascinating films, a hallway of music and extraordinary artifacts celebrating American music will captivate museum guests. Allan says, “The museum is not only about music in Mississippi, but about the history of recorded music. It will be similar to the museum in Los Angeles, but it will be told in a completely different way.”

Mayor Nowell says, “We are really excited about the museum coming to Cleveland. We hope to see more tourism coming our way, and we are preparing for more visitors. We are thrilled about the possibilities this is going to give us and our economy.” This groundbreaking museum is scheduled to open on March 5, 2016. The GRAMMY Museum® Mississippi is another incredible milestone along Mississippi’s journey in the music industry.

THE VALUE OF

HOME OWNERSHIP W RI T T E N BY M ITCHE LL WALTE RS

The best part of working as a Mortgage Specialist with Metropolitan Bank is that I am part of my clients’ “next chapter.” Every day I am helping my clients: whether moving into their first home, their “step up” home for an expanding family, getting their dream vacation home in the mountains or on the beach, or their retirement home. There is an excitement that surrounds Real Estate and that is why I love what I do! No matter what chapter of life you are in, there are many advantages to Homeownership. Here are a few of the top reasons it makes “cents” to purchase a home: Homeownership Can Build Wealth Over Time Homeownership can be a very savvy financial move, but only if you buy a home you can afford. When you meet with your Mortgage Specialist, it is far better to work the financing around a payment that fits comfortably within your budget, rather than going in to get approved on a certain Sales Price. This approach will help set realistic expectations on how much house fits into your budget. With Every Montly Payment You Are Building Equity The equity in your home is the amount of money you can sell it for minus what you still owe. Every month when you make a mortgage payment, a portion of what you pay reduces the amount you owe. That reduction increases your equity. As months and years go by, your equity grows! Buying Can be Cheaper than Renting With Mortgage Rates still at historic lows and the increase in Rent over the past few years, it might be cheaper to purchase rather than rent. When you purchase a home it is YOURS, an investment in yourself and in your future. When you pay a landlord every month, you are paying for something that you will never own or be able to enjoy the benefits of ownership. There are many advantages of home ownership; you can quickly reach information overload if you try to do this alone. I always tell clients the best thing you can do if you are considering purchasing a home is to get a professional team in place. It typically starts with a meeting with a Mortgage Specialist to secure financing. Your Mortgage Specialist, partnering with your Realtor, will utilize every resource available to make your transaction as smooth as possible. Buying a home is a very exciting time, and if you get the right team in place, it will be fun and exciting for you as well!!

Garden Vows WEDDING INSPIRATION

PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

Imagine exchanging vows beneath a majestic oak tree in the heart of a historic plantation.

Draped in greenery

and sprinkled with live oaks, Brandon Hall Plantation sets the stage for a magical wedding. We used simple details for a big impact: a cozy wooden porch swing was wrapped in floral garland, and neutral furnishings were added for pretty seating. The bride and groom shared many sweet moments, and her exquisite white gowns glowed against the green canvas.

The recipe for extraordinary events

WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

“It is as pretty a setting as you could find for such a concert.

With the Reservoir shimmering behind the symphony, the moon glowing overhead, and boats floating on the water, evenings at Pepsi Pops are truly picturesque,” says Michael Beattie, President and Executive Director of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra. 2016 marks the thirty-fifth anniversary of this enchanting event. Each year, fireworks explode across the sky while star-spangled music dances through the air over the Ross Barnett Reservoir. Michael says, “The event was actually started by the Jackson Symphony League, a support group of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, about 37 or 38 years ago. After a few successful years, they sought to expand the event and approached Brown Bottling Group to form a partnership.” Brown Bottling Group has been generously sponsoring and promoting Pepsi Pops ever since! “As title sponsor of Pepsi Pops, we provide the community with a family-friendly event under the stars where adults and children alike can be exposed to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra in a nontraditional setting at Old Trace Park on the Reservoir,” says Shelley Brown Floyd, Chief Marketing Officer at Brown Bottling Group. “It is truly a night of fun for all as you leave work, pick up the kids and come straight to the reservoir.” Imagine enjoying a live performance on a beautiful Mississippi night with your friends and family. There is nothing better than a night at Pepsi Pops. All proceeds from this spectacular event will benefit the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra, helping with operating costs and educational programs for children across the state. Congratulations to the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and Brown Bottling Group on 35 wonderful years of Pepsi Pops!

Mary Claire Willl NATCHE Z, M IS S IS S IPPI As a child, Mary Claire Cain fell in love with the history and unparalleled beauty of Natchez. After William Buck proposed, Mary Claire began planning the southern wedding of her dreams. Hues of blush, pale peach and dove gray perfectly complemented the romantic setting of Brandon Hall Plantation, and a rainy evening surprisingly changed plans for the better. The couple wed in an intimate porch-side service, then celebrated in a clear tent filled with gorgeous florals and decor. It was a beautiful, dreamy night in Natchez.

Inspiring Lovee Story Neely and Drew found love in a most unusual place – the Walgreens Drive Thru. Seven years prior, Neely battled Thyroid Cancer, and continued taking a daily medication. As she pulled her car up to the window and locked eyes with the handsome pharmacist, she was speechless. Neely says, “I thought, ‘Wow, I’ve never seen him before!’ So Drew and I chatted for a few minutes and then I left.” Two weeks later, Drew took Neely on their first date, and the rest is history. She smiles, “I never imagined I would meet my husband and the love of my life because of my cancer. It was such a difficult time, but because I had to go to Walgreens to get medicine, I met the man of my dreams.”

ņ Ę `†|†r ɏŠ ,`„`„G`ÂŞ DINNER INSPIRED BY A SUNSET FLIGHT ME RID IAN, M IS S IS S IPPI

Aviation is a passion for Daniel Wile. His mother, Sissie Wile, says, “It is so important to our family. It started with my husband, Fred, whose favorite hobby is flying airplanes. My son, Daniel, spent a lot of time at the airport with my husband and earned his pilot’s license at a very young age. When it came time to plan Daniel’s rehearsal dinner the evening before marrying Anna Allred, Daniel chose the perfect location: an airplane hangar in his hometown of Meridian. The talented team behind Pretty Presentations converted the hangar into an enchanting venue. Guests were greeted by two of the family’s planes, beautifully adorned with flowers. Sissie says, “We stayed outside and watched a gorgeous sunset. As we moved to dinner, the hangar became very romantic after dark. The planes had floor lights beaming from them, and it was completely magical. Inside, the hangar was dressed with blue flowers, inspired by the sky on a spring evening. “We draped the entire hangar, adding a touch of softness against the concrete floor, reflects Sissie. Tables were assigned according to airport codes throughout the state of Mississippi, and guests were seated near airports meaningful to them. Family and friends also feasted on tiny chocolate planes after a delicious dinner. “Our rehearsal dinner was incredibly unique. I was immediately captured by the idea of using the hangar, knowing how important flying is to Daniel and his family, gushes Anna. “The hanger was transformed into a truly spectacular setting.

In the quiet hours each Sunday morning, a livestock barn transforms into a peaceful place of worship. As the sun rises over Tadlock Stockyards in Forrest, Mississippi, heads bow in prayer, and cowboy church begins. Cattlemen and women face long, hard Sundays at the livestock sale barn, which has been in business for nearly a century. David Tadlock has passionately and faithfully run the barn for over forty years. “We started cowboy church because the boys don’t have time to go to their church. It’s just something special that we do for them and some of our customers that want to come,” says David. Dressed in jeans, boots and cowboy hats, worshipers gather together in the lobby of the barn for the quaint service. Though it is simple, it has had a great impact on the employees of Tadlock Stockyards. Jamie Laird says with awe, “I really love cowboy church. It just gives all of us the opportunity to worship our Lord and Savior since we are away from our family on Sundays. After all, some of my greatest wounds have come from this barn (in injuries) and so my greatest healing has happened here, too.”

GRAD ATION a d e r b y pa rt y JA CKS ON, M IS S IS S IPPI

The legendary Kentucky Derby inspired Mississippi’s most memorable graduation party. As magnificent horses sped around Churchill Downs, five dear friends gathered to celebrate their upcoming high school graduation. Sarah Chase Dulske, Alex Good, Carly Good, Honey Holman and Caroline Jaques enlisted Kendall Poole Event Planning to create their perfect event. Black and white details throughout the party mirrored the classic ambiance of the Derby. A delicious cake was covered in checkered icing, and vibrant red roses topped the tables. In keeping with Derby tradition, the girls donned impressive hats and gorgeous spring dresses for a contest. Sarah Chase says, “I absolutely loved the hat contest! It provided us with a chance to play dress-up again. All of the guests put a lot of creativity and effort into their attire, which made the event even more fun!” Guests also posed with loved ones in a photobooth. “I remember seeing my dad cry for the first time about my graduating and starting the next chapter of life,” reflects Sarah Chase. “The photo booth allowed me to document that moment with him in a silly way! The strip of photos I took with my dad remains pinned right behind the steering wheel of my car to this very day.” America’s greatest race truly set the stage for an unforgettable event. As the girls adjust to life in college, they hold dear memories from their graduation party. Caroline treasures a photograph of the five girls with their mothers. “We are all such great friends,” she says sweetly. “That picture really captures the wonderful support systems we all have at home.”

“Twins are just precious. And when they finally begin to understand what having a twin means, it melts your heart. I think Avery and Campbell were starting to realize how special it was to have that forever playmate,” says Jill Meacham Dale, pondering the adorable relationship between her six-year-old twins. Avery is a gorgeous, gregarious little girl. With golden bangs gently sweeping her bright eyes, her long wavy hair seems to glisten, much like her personality. Avery’s closest confidant was her brother, Campbell, who shared the same expressive eyes and wide, happy smile as his twin sister. Though Campbell said he adored being a twin because he “loved having someone to play with,” Jill admits that Avery is the only one who truly understood Campbell. And more importantly, “for him, having Avery by his side was a life saver.” On a cold February day in 2014, life unexpectedly turned for the Dale family. “We really had not noticed any glaring signs that something was wrong, even the weekend before we entered the hospital. On Monday, February 10, Campbell went to school like normal, but was upset because he was having trouble going to the bathroom,” recalls Jill. Over the new few days, Campbell developed a slowly climbing fever, and his tiny stomach began to tighten and swell. A CT scan revealed devastating news: Campbell had cancer. Surgeons rushed to remove a four-and-a-half inch mass from Campbell’s abdomen and after reviewing pathology reports, doctors diagnosed him with Stage IV Rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. Jill says, “Rhabdo is a fast-growing tumor. It responds well to chemotherapy, but at the same time, it tends to come back.” Amidst the shock and confusion of the diagnosis, Jill and her husband, David, looked at each other and wondered, “How do we tell our children what is going on with Campbell?” Their golden-haired boy was barely four-years-old, and he and Avery were truly Jill and David’s “miracle babies.” Jill says, “I remember sitting in the conference room with David on one side of the table, and a team of doctors on the other. When we received Campbell’s diagnosis, I told them, through tears, our twins’ story.” Jill suffered a miscarriage early in their marriage, and struggled to conceive. Convicted about her prayer life, she committed to praying for 28 days about a specific need. “I remember pleading and asking God to bless us with a child,” says Jill. A month later, she found out she was expecting two sweet blessings!

Jill’s pregnancy was considered high-risk, and her babies were born at 33 weeks. “They were both so tiny. Our miracle babies went to the NICU, needing oxygen and time to grow. But when we were able to bring them home, they thrived. God had answered our prayers and He continued to show His healing power in our lives. And in my mind, we had already faced our struggle.” Cancer introduced a new battle, and Campbell was admitted to Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson. It was a rough time for the twins. Jill says, “I remember sending Avery home with my parents and telling them they might have to sleep upstairs with her. She had never been without Campbell and he had never been without her.” Avery says, “I did not like that he had to spend the night at the hospital, because I didn’t get to see him a lot.” Campbell finally returned home, a bit more fragile and with a tender scar. Avery, just one minute older than Campbell, immediately took on the role of caretaker. The protective four-year-old hauled her sleeping bag into Campbell’s room, and spent every night on the floor beneath him. Jill says, “When he came home, all was right in the world. Avery was so happy to have all four of us under the same roof again, and Campbell was always glad to come home with her waiting there for him.” Campbell even lovingly said his favorite thing about being home was “that I sleep in my bed and I can look down on the floor and Avery is sleeping right beside me.” Every night, Jill and David snuggled with Avery and Campbell and read a Bible Story. Jill says, “We love to read the Bible and talk about all of the different miracles God has performed.” Avery is enchanted with one particular story. The Book of Mark tells the story of a man who approaches Jesus, falls at his feet, and begs him to heal his dying daughter. Mark 5:41 says, “Taking her by the hand He said to her, ‘Tal’itha cu’mi;' which means, ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise.’ And immediately the girl got up and walked, and they were immediately overcome with amazement.” Jill marvels, “Avery would always say, ‘I hope God will heal Campbell just like He healed the little girl.’”

After 54 weeks of intense radiation and chemotherapy, it appeared Campbell’s cancer was in remission. However, his final scan showed a two-centimeter growth in the same vicinity as the original tumor. Jill says, “That was so hard for us when it came back. I had two weeks of nonstop crying, not understanding. I was hyperventilating. David and I worried so much about how we were going to tell him and explain it to him.” But Campbell’s trust in God blew them away. “He did say a few times, ‘I thought my boo-boo’s were gone!” We simply told him we would keep praying for God to make them go away. And that was it. He never asked again. Campbell did not question God like David and I had done.” On a flight home from one of his last treatments, Campbell and Jill saw four glorious rainbows shining through the clouds. Jill says with awe, “From the beginning of creation, a rainbow has always been a sign of God's covenant with us. A covenant to never flood the world again, but also a covenant that HE will always take care of us, sustain us, provide for us, comfort us and love us in the midst of great storms. I love what God's rainbow represents. As I saw it out the plane window and watched Campbell point to it, I felt a peace like no other.” Heaven gained a most beloved angel, just weeks shy of the twins’ sixth birthday. Jill’s faith shines through in her beautiful description of their tragic loss: “Our sweet Campbell finally caught his rainbow…he ran through Heaven’s gates into HIS Daddy’s arms and is sitting at the feet of Jesus. What a sight to behold! Praising Jesus that HE blessed me with the most precious blue-eyed, blond haired boy almost 6 years ago…the joy he has brought into our lives is unbelievable. Our hearts are breaking, but we are home rejoicing that he is healed and he is finally HOME!” Thank you to Leigh and Ken Johnston with HiLeigh Kentagious for providing the hot air balloon and an afternoon of fun for the Dale Family. inspiration mississippi | inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

Celebrate friendship and early summer’s warm evenings with a dinner al fresco. With the picturesque Barn at Bridlewood as a backdrop, we topped a handsome wooden table with flowers in bright hues of yellow, gold, pink and orange. Guests were treated to a delectable menu of southern staples including Mississippi raised catfish and vegetables fresh from the soil. As friends mingled and laughed, the sun set over the farm, allowing a string of twinkling lights to glow above the intimate party. What a perfect summer affair!

For 127 years people have flocked to Philadelphia for the Neshoba County Fair. We wanted to discover the charm that is “The Fair” and asked two families to fill us in. “Family is the number one reason we go back to the Fair every year. You have every age group under one roof for one week with no TVs! The Fair offers many activities, including carnival games and rides, a talent show, a beauty pageant, cakewalks, and politicians on the square trying to convince us they are the best for the job. Also, there are Harness races every afternoon and bands and concerts nightly.” - Susan McNamara "Our family loves the Fair! It is a reunion for us with our four adult children and their spouses, and our eleven grandchildren. We all make it a priority to attend. My husband, Tag, grew up going to the Fair. We have been married for forty-nine years and I have only missed one Fair, because I was having a baby!" - Dot Gamblin

Jennnifer Coy MAD IS ON, M IS S IS S IPPI On a cold winter evening, Coy Neal presented a stunning Christmas ornament to his girlfriend, Jennifer. After admiring the front, she carefully placed the ornament back into the box. Coy encouraged Jennifer to look at the back, and she was shocked to find “Will You Marry Me? inscribed in gold. Jennifer said yes, and the couple based their wedding around the simple beauty of their church, Chapel of the Cross. With softly hued florals and ivory bridesmaid dresses, the rich colors of the church shone throughout the vows.

gentlemen grooming tips BY GREAT SC OTT PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

1. heat Shave during or immediately after showering. The heat from the shower will open your pores!

2. direction Pay attention to the direction your hair grows, so you can shave with the grain. If you want a closer shave, re-lather and go against the grain the second time.

3. proper razor Use a properly weighted razor. The weight keeps you from pressing too hard and taking off skin.

4. cold

After shaving, rinse with cold water to help close pores and hydrate your skin!

WITH TRADITIONAL INDIAN BLESSINGS HAT TIE S BURG, M IS S IS S IPPI

Two lovely, expectant sisters were showered with bangles, sweet treats and blessings in a traditional South Indian ceremony. Adorned in exquisite dresses, Neelima Duncan and Vimala Ingram glowed as friends and family celebrated their incredible news. With Vimala expecting a girl and Neelima a boy, the sisters chose to decorate with traditional pink and blue. In lieu of pastels, the room was draped in bright jewel tones, beautifully blending with the Indian details. Neelima says, “During a Seemantham ceremony, the mother-to-be is adorned with bangles to help stimulate the baby’s development. The sweet treats are placed in her lap to represent the arrival of a sweet bundle of joy. All guests attending the event bless the mother and baby for a safe and healthy delivery.” “It was a wonderful event with thoughtful details that we will remember forever!” says Vimala. “We are so happy we were able to keep the traditional aspects of the Indian baby shower. As with any occasion where we gather family and friends in one place, our favorite memories were made spending time with them.”

Rising talent - LINDSEY LEE W RI T T E N BY M ITCHE LL WALTE RS PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY I'll walk through the fire, I'll run through the rain, I'll wait for forever, If ove is your name From “Love is Your Name” written by Eric Paslay and Lindsey Lee

“This is what I was created to do; it is my purpose. God gave me the gift of music,” says Lindsey Lee thoughtfully. Through praying and following His path, He has perfectly opened every door and led me to songwriting.” Lindsey has never known a day without music. Her childhood home in Hattiesburg was overflowing with creativity: melodies, beautiful voices and the sounds of instruments constantly filled the air. Lindsey traveled throughout Mississippi singing at revivals and church banquets with her father, a minister of music, and her mother taught voice and piano lessons for twenty-five years. Lindsey’s love of music is deeply rooted. “I always wanted to be a singer. But being from a small town, I didn’t know how to make that happen,” she says. As a senior in high school, Lindsey wrote and recorded three songs, earning her a management deal. “That was the beginning of my career,” she reflects. “That showed my parents that I was serious and that I could succeed.” In 2010, Lindsey headed for Music City. She started a YouTube channel, filled with impressive videos of her vocals, and landed jobs singing backup for artists Stephen Jerzak and Miley Cyrus. She laughs, “YouTube is where my career really picked up!” After touring, Lindsey dove into songwriting and was introduced to Marti Frederiksen, a famous record producer, songwriter and musician. One evening in the legendary Bluebird Café, Lindsey sang a songwriter’s round with Marti. It was a beautiful, intimate show. Aerosmith singer, Steven Tyler, just happened to be in the audience, and was captivated by one of Lindsey’s songs. “Marti invited Steven to come see what Nashville was about, because Steven wanted to make a solo record. He heard me sing ‘Love Is Your Name.’ Steven pulled me aside, said the song touched him and that he wanted to record it,” smiles Lindsey. “I was completely blown away. It seemed surreal, but he kept his word, recorded the song and released it as his first country single.” Lindsey wrote “Love Is Your Name” two years ago with songwriter Eric Paslay. “He was a big deal and I was nervous. But he said, ‘Let’s see what falls from the sky.’ Eric started playing a pretty lick on the guitar and I started singing a melody,” says Lindsey. “All of these beautiful words were flowing from us. The song is about that feeling when you would do anything for love.” Today, this grounded, wildly talented songwriter from Mississippi is under contract as a writer with Round Hill Music. “I will stay there as long as they will keep me!” Lindsey says. “I would love to write songs for the rest of my life. It is perfect for me. I get to be creative. I can grow my family and touch people through music. That has always been my dream.”

By 2013, a once thriving and magnificent elementary school sat vacant in the heart of Carthage. The 1920’s structure, composed of handsome red bricks and stately white columns, had been completely abandoned. All that remained was a hint of its original splendor. Carthage native, Hilton Hollis, simply wouldn't stand for it. "I started performing in the school’s theatre when I was eight-years-old,” reflects Hilton. “My sister was in the junior miss pageant on that very same stage, and I served as her escort. This school always had such a special place in my heart. It was unbelievable to me that they would let this beautiful building go to waste.”

124 inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

Now a wildly successful fashion designer in New York City, Hilton spent his idyllic childhood years on a farm in Carthage. Creative, warm and gregarious, Hilton developed a passion for sewing at a young age. In 1997, Hilton moved to New York City, studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and trained under some of the world’s most renowned designers. Hilton now designs under his own label, Hilton Hollis, and creates beautiful, wearable pieces for the modern woman. Hilton partnered with several people from his Carthage elementary class, and started The Local Fashion Advantage, a foundation dedicated to saving the beloved building. At the 2015 event, the evening began with a silent auction, and one lucky bidder snagged a luxurious package filled with shopping in Atlanta, clothing from Hilton Hollis, and high-end jewelry. Following the silent auction, Hilton previewed his Fall 2015 collection. During the incredible Runway Show, guests were treated to musical performances, dancing, singing and fashions by local designers and boutiques. Over a few short years, The Local Fashion Advantage has raised thousands of dollars, and the charming building has come to life once again. The old elementary school now serves as a Community Center for special events, and thanks to Hilton and The Local Fashion Advantage, the auditorium finally has an air conditioner. Hilton laughs, “It took 80-plus years to get it air conditioned! It is pretty remarkable. Little by little, the auditorium has been completely renovated, from the 600 seats to the magnificent velvet curtain. It has rightfully returned to its original grandeur.

Beyond the financial aspects of the event, The Local Fashion Advantage has given creative Mississippians an outlet to express themselves. Local designers, hair and makeup stylists, and even aspiring models are welcome to participate. “Last year we had people from Vicksburg all the way to Memphis. We even had a few from Birmingham. It is pretty awesome that a small town like Carthage can pull in that sort of crowd,” marvels Hilton. A few young women have even acquired major modeling contracts after walking in the event! Hilton says, “Two years ago we were doing our first local model casting. I was flipping through the head shots and noticed a girl named ‘Hollis.’ I immediately wondered if we were kin! She came in to walk for me and was a complete natural. She was unbelievable and looked like she had been walking in Paris shows for years.” Today she has signed with a major model management company in New York City and models full-time! “I think what we have been able to do has inspired people. Now that I am away from Mississippi, I love it even more,” smiles Hilton. "It is huge that we have made some sort of impact, and it goes beyond the financial impact on our elementary school building. It is really about promoting self-worth and being able to do something above and beyond what you dream you are capable of doing.”

“Our denim is built for you. We don’t require you to fit into our jeans,” says Josh West, owner of Blue Delta Jean Co. in Oxford, Mississippi. “No matter your body type, we can perfectly build that jean around you. Even customers who are not a hard fit are buying our denim because they want quality jeans and something different. We are the YETI cooler of the jean world on college campuses.” Josh has always had an eye for fashion. “I dress differently than my peers, and I saw a place to create value in custom clothing,” he says. His keen sense of style sparked the brilliant idea to create custom garments in North Mississippi. He quickly realized custom jeans were highly in demand, and Blue Delta Jean Co. was born. Josh and his business partner, Nick Weaver, hired their first seamstress in 2012. They began with custom fittings around the state, and by 2013, signed with retail stores around the country to fit customers for their brand. Blue Delta impressively signed with Tom James, the largest custom clothier in the world.

Denim is a difficult product to custom build. Josh says, “We are a touch and feel business, and we are not creating these jeans as quickly as we can. We are building each pairs of jeans for one specific person. We use premium raw denim that is 99% American-milled.” Each pair of jeans is created in Tupelo, just an hour from their sales office and showroom in Oxford. The Blue Delta studio is just steps from the Oxford square, and customers experience the unique process of building a pair of jeans with a personal stylist. Josh says, “First, you choose your denim. We have up to fifteen choices of denim on a roll. You get to touch, feel, smell and stretch the denim. That becomes your canvas.” Next, customers choose thread colors, hardware and pocket designs, before taking eight to twelve measurements from the waist down. Josh smiles, “The measurements are the most important part! You can choose straight, flare, London trim or boot cut jeans. We will give you pointers on which style best suits your body type. You wait around six to eight weeks, and then we like our customers to come back into the store and try the jeans on. If the fit is not correct, we are more than happy to change things for you. If you cannot come to the Oxford store, we will ship the jeans to you.” Blue Delta Jeans run from $350 to $500. The Oxford showroom is open Tuesday through Saturday, or you can request a custom fitting on their website. You can also call or simply drop by the showroom! Josh says, “When the garment world moved overseas, a lot of our talent left with it. I saw an avenue with all of the talent we have in this area, to bring the ability of a premium custom product back to America.” We are in awe of the phenomenal jeans Blue Delta is producing, and we cannot wait to slip into a pair of our own Mississippi-made custom jeans!

Kyle Dutiel has an innate passion for animals.

At the tender age of three, Kyle and his parents left their home in Metairie, Louisiana, and settled in Brandon, Mississippi. Kyle was diagnosed with developmental delays and a learning disability, yet the move to Mississippi proved to be a perfect fit for Kyle. Days spent herding cattle on his family’s Copiah County farm were treasured. Kyle participated in 4-H Club, proudly showing sheep at the Mississippi State Fair and Dixie National. Kyle also developed a curiosity for horses. Little did he know, this curiosity would lead to extraordinary victories.

“With the encouragement of Debbie Waller, his Special Education teacher at Brandon Middle School, and Freddie Townsend, the equestrian coach for Area 8 Special Olympics, Kyle began participating in equestrian at the local and state level,” recalls his mother, Linda Dutiel. “After receiving medals at the State Games, he was chosen to go to the Special Olympics World Games in 1999 in Raleigh, North Carolina. And he won a Bronze Medal!” Kyle, a gentle and kind young man, was becoming a phenomenal athlete. Linda smiles, “In competition photos, Kyle always has his ‘game face’ on!” In 2003, Kyle flew to Dublin, Ireland, to compete in his second Special Olympics World Games and won a Silver Medal in Working Trails and a Bronze Medal in Equitation. Kyle’s successes left him hungry for Gold. In 2014, Kyle began working with a new trainer, Camie Crowe, at the peaceful Heavenly Hills Farm in Madison. Camie and Kyle were a dream team. “I have been riding since I was 5-years-old, and am a multinational world and reserve world champion in both Paint and Pinto industries,” says Camie. “Kyle and I met and we instantly hit it off.” She recalls, “Though Kyle had ridden horses for almost twenty years, it had been six years since he had been on a horse when we began training. We simply went back to the basics. He had to learn how to control the horse.” The thrill of riding came flooding back. “It’s like having a best friend,” says Kyle, his eyes sparkling as he speaks of riding a horse. “You have to learn the good things and the bad things. You have to be on your toes; every horse is different.” The Special Olympics World Games present an unusual challenge for equestrians. “In the United States Special Olympics, you don’t know what kind of horse you are going to be working with. The horses are donated for the event from all over the country,” says Camie. Though he had never seen nor ridden his horse before the competition, Kyle was ready. “Thankfully, because of Dorothy Cox Terry and her farm, Heavenly Hills Ranch, we were able to ride multiple horses with different personalities, strengths, and weaknesses,” smiles Camie. “Kyle was perfectly prepared to take on any horse that he would have to ride in competition.” Amazingly, Kyle was awarded the coveted Gold Medal in all three of his events: Equitation, Dressage and Working Trails. Camie says with awe, “He excelled in every class. It was such a privilege to be a part of that; as a coach I just wanted him to succeed. But I think more importantly, Kyle proved to himself what I already saw – that he is a real champion.” This courageous, determined and talented equestrian has become a confident, independent man. “Kyle has learned to communicate, try new things, and accept responsibility. He works a full-time job and has an apartment,” says Linda proudly. “Special Olympics has really helped him develop the skills he needed to take care of himself.” As Kyle travels the world for Special Olympics, his heart is always with his beloved home. Linda says sweetly, “He takes great pride in telling everyone he meets, at every level of competition, that he is from Brandon, Mississippi.” inspiration mississippi | inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

The Woman’s Clinic has been proudly serving the Jackson area since 1950. With twelve board-certified doctors, The Woman’s Clinic specializes in obstetrics and gynecology, the examination, diagnosis and treatment of women’s health problems. The Woman’s Clinic is refreshingly patient focused, and offers the following: Prenatal care for both routine and high risk patients, and they see you through delivery. Their OB/GYN specialists provide a wide variety of treatments, including annual gynecologic examinations, infertility testing and treatment, cancer screening, sonography, mammogram, bone densitometry, gynecological surgery, and urinary incontinence evaluation and treatment. They offer same day appointments with one of their physicians. Online services include asking questions, scheduling appointments, requesting refills and checking results. The Woman’s Clinic has a full-time registered dietician who is available to help with dietary issues, including weight loss or gain, diabetic monitoring during pregnancy and dietary issues specific to teens. They are affiliated with Baptist hospital, which means that there is a board-certified OB/GYN available at all times in the case of an emergency. Patients have access to the full services of Baptist's comprehensive medical facilities, including adult and neonatal ICU services. Part of growing up is learning to take care of your body. This includes seeing an OB/GYN for routine health care. If you have never visited an OB/GYN before, you may have questions about what will happen at your first visit! What to Expect: The first visit may be just a talk between you and your doctor, or you may have certain exams. It is completely normal to feel nervous about your first visit! Dr. Erica Ory of The Woman’s Clinic says, “You may want to let your doctor know you are nervous. He or she can help put you at ease! Giving honest answers is key to your care.” Special Concerns: Many young women share the same health concerns: cramps, problems with menstrual periods, acne, weight, sex and sexuality, birth control, STDs, alcohol, drugs, smoking and emotional ups and downs. Talking with your doctor about these issues is a key step to staying healthy. Exams: You may have certain exams at the first visit. If you choose, a family member may join you for any part of the exam.

PREPARING FOR PREGNANCY TIPS AND ADVICE FOR MOMS -TO-BE

“The decision to have a baby is personal and life changing.

If you are contemplating becoming pregnant, now is the time to consider your health and create a healthy physical environment for your baby,” says Dr. Erica Ory, a physician with The Woman’s Clinic. “We suggest starting with a thorough checkup that includes a medical history and lifestyle evaluation. And don't forget daily prenatal vitamins!” Even if you choose not to to have a pre-pregnancy visit with your gynecologist, there are many things you can begin to do to create a healthy environment for your future child! Dr. Ory suggests the following: Begin making healthy eating choices. Start an exercise routine that you can carry on throughout your pregnancy. Consult with your doctor if you are beginning a new exercise program! Have a complete physical examination to determine your own health. If you have recently had an annual exam with your OB/GYN, this may not be necessary. Among other considerations, you will want to be sure you are up to date on your immunizations. Begin taking prenatal vitamins. Your doctor can recommend a brand if you are unsure. It is very important for you to begin getting adequate folic acid. Women planning to become pregnant should take at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily to help prevent open neural tube defects in the fetus. You may also wish to start taking a Vitamin D supplement. Stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Speak with your physician about any recreational, prescription, herbal or over-the-counter drugs that you are taking. Avoid environmental hazards, such as radiation and chemicals. Limit your intake of caffeine. Stock up on sleep. Dr. Ory says, “Your gynecologist will be more than happy to help with any questions or concerns you may have. Preparing for pregnancy can be a time filled with a variety of emotions, and it is important to be in communication with your spouse and doctor. Be sure to talk with your gynecologist about any medical problems you may have, such as diabetes, high-blood pressure or any kind of cardiovascular problems that may need to be monitored during the pregnancy.” The Woman’s Clinic promises individual and personal care. “The OB/GYN and patient relationship is a unique one; arguably, the most personal one of all medical practices. We understand that relationship and do not take it for granted.” For more information on The Woman’s Clinic and their extraordinary doctors, please visit their helpful website, www.twc-ms.com

TAILGATES and traditions Tailgating is a time-honored tradition in the south. Every Saturday during the fall, fans flock to schools across Mississippi for food, fellowship and football. We joined four wonderful families at Jackson State University, Mississippi State University, The University of Mississippi and The University of Southern Mississippi to learn more about their beloved traditions. Whether you love football games for the fried chicken, people watching or simply the thrill of the game, let’s explore what makes football so special in Mississippi.

Vivian Harris How long have you been tailgating? “My family and I have been tailgating at JSU for over fifteen years! It started with a small group and has grown to over 88 family members and friends.” What is your favorite tradition? “Our tradition is service to family. We are family people and love being together. It is something that we look forward to each game – just hanging out with family and friends, laughing, loving and enjoying life!” Are there any special details on your tent? “The pride of the JSU Tiger is shown in a gigantic, blown-up size!” What does Jackson State mean to you? “Jackson State continues to educate our family for the future; that’s where Jackson State comes into vision. We love the Homecoming game each fall, because we all gather in our hometown, at our University, in our stadium, and celebrate this wonderful place we call home.” inspiration mississippi | inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

Ray English Who is your favorite college football team? “MSU! I moved to Mississippi in 1965. I graduated from Mississippi State and met so many great people. I am a huge football fan and travel to many of the away games.” Why do you think college football is such an integral part of southern culture? “We have so many outstanding players in the SEC; the strongest players in the country. It brings so much pride to the south!” Do you have any favorite tailgating memories? “We went to a game in Jackson, Mississippi. MSU beat Alabama and we were there. It’s really about more than just football. You get to see friends and family and have a chance to visit at home and away games.” What is your typical game day uniform? “I love my maroon!”

Lisa and Lee Paris Who is your favorite football team? “Since my great-grandfather began our family’s now five-generation association with The University of Mississippi in 1872 as a student, our family has been ardent supporters of the Ole Miss Rebels! The roots run quite deep.” What is your favorite tailgating tradition? “We are part of a ‘tent group’ at Ole Miss that is called ‘Our Spot that Ever Calls.’ The name is derived from the University’s Alma Mater, which begins, ‘Way down south in Mississippi there’s a spot that ever calls.’ The group is made of twenty-one families spanning the generations, and gathers for each Ole Miss home game at our spot for great food, southern hospitality, fellowship and shared love for Ole Miss.” What is your game day uniform? “Dressing up for football games at Ole Miss is a beautiful, time honored tradition somewhat unique in today’s casual world. The ladies come in dresses and the men most often in khaki slacks and either a red or blue shirt. Some of the students visit the tent in navy blazers and red and blue ties.” Do you have a favorite tailgating dish? “Each week the table at our tent is filled with various football fare. The menus change each week, but fried chicken is a constant staple. It is all delicious and bountiful, feeding 100+ people each gathering Saturday.”

THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI

Lauren Richards Who is your favorite football team? “The Southern Miss Golden Eagles!” What is your favorite tailgating tradition? “I love getting to the tent hours before kickoff to hang out with friends. Two hours before the game begins, we always head over to The Eagle Walk together to cheer on the football players as they head into the stadium!” Is there a history to your tent? “Our tailgate is a big group of friends that went to college together! Most of us became friends through our sororities and fraternities in college and now we all live in Hattiesburg. We always have friends and family drive in from out of town to join us, so every home game becomes a college reunion.” Why do you think college football is such an integral part of southern culture? “We grew up watching football on TV every Saturday. College football is a passion that is instilled at birth, and the devotion we feel for our university keeps us coming back to games week after week (even if the score doesn’t turn out the way we hoped). Southerners also love to entertain, and college football is a reason to gather with great friends and good food while cheering on a team we love.”

Inspiring Lovee Story One frigid December evening, AliceClaire met Jason and sparks immediately flew. Just days later, the two shared their first date and talked for a remarkable eight hours! “That was without question the moment we fell in love,” smiles AliceClaire. Jason proposed two years later, and AliceClaire eagerly began planning their wedding. In the midst of the excitement, her family suffered a shocking loss when her childhood home burned in a devastating fire. Miraculously, her mother’s wedding gown was found amongst the rubble. As a sweet nod to her loving parents, AliceClaire wore a custom veil on her wedding day, delicately sewn with lace from her mother’s beloved gown, as well as her own. The veil became a beautiful reminder of family, love and faith; one that AliceClaire hopes will be worn for generations to come.

Oxford will soon be home to a luxurious lodging experience. “Chancellor’s House is a lovely mansion with thirty-one suites and rooms, a dining room, beautiful bar, tea room, private library and a formal terrace garden,” smiles Amanda Brown Olmstead, President of A. Brown Olmstead Associates. The man behind Chancellor’s House recognized a need in Oxford. “My wife and I came to visit our son, who was a freshman at the time. Not being familiar with how popular everything was, we didn’t make reservations on time. We had to stay about fifty miles away. A lot of the time we would have spent visiting our son and exploring this beautiful community was spent commuting back and forth,” reflects David Porter, President and Managing Member of Chancellor’s House, LLC. “We wanted to build a luxury hotel that would be a pleasure for people to stay in when they come to visit Ole Miss and Oxford.” The hotel boasts a beautiful, contemporary rooftop lounge, with views of the Grove in one direction and the square over historic Oxford in the other. A handsome and warm library lounge will be a cozy spot to take a seat and enjoy a novel written by a Mississippi author. The boutique hotel also promises to be the perfect location for weddings and special events. A grand ballroom, dripping in chandeliers and beautiful draperies, will be a fantastic choice for larger weddings, with seating for up to one hundred guests. For a more intimate affair, vows in the outdoor terrace garden or the library will be utterly romantic. Amanda says, “The entire hotel is perfect for a wedding event. If booked far enough in advance it will be a fabulous big house party! We have two maximum penthouses, perfect for the bride and groom or their parents. We also offer around-the-clock concierge service, as well as a Spa. The hotel rooms can accommodate sixty or more people every evening.” Chancellor’s House will pay exquisite attention to detail. They offer any type of personalized print materials, from beautiful monogrammed notecards to lovely printed menus. They also have access to the finest china and glassware, and will create dazzling floral arrangements. Chancellor’s House promises luxury in an intimate and inviting setting. Governor Phil Bryant attended a recent Unveiling Party for Chancellor’s House, and was stunned by the property. He said, “This is going to be one of the top properties in the United States. This will be the destination location for people who want that type of luxury experience.” Chancellor’s House will open its magnificent doors on September 1, 2016.

Elizabeeth Justin E NID, M IS S IS S IPPI Elizabeth Burkhalter and Justin Caine wed in a rustic, romantic service beneath towering trees in the woods of Enid. The bride wore a stunning lace gown with a cascading ribbon, and a beautiful cameo ring that once belonged to Justin’s grandmother. With neutral and crisp details, it was a perfectly beautiful celebration with friends and family.

Inspiring Idea: Elizabeth and Justin were enjoying a crab boil with their parents at her family’s quaint cabin in the woods. When night fell, Justin pulled Elizabeth outside into the dark. Suddenly, the words “Marry Me” twinkled in the forest. “The lights were sparkling in the trees behind him and I was speechless. After a few happy tears and cheers from our family, I said, ‘Yes!’” This peaceful plot of land in Enid is not only where Justin proposed, but also where they have spent countless hours hunting and enjoying time with family. Naturally, Elizabeth and Justin married in this wild, gorgeous setting; a place they will surely cherish forever.

Makeup tips

BY AMY HEAD PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

1. Smoky Eyes 2. Blush it on Smoke up the eyes for fall! Swipe a dark eye shadow over a creme liner on the top, and over a pencil on the bottom. This creates the perfect smoky eye.

Apply blush! Gently sweep from ear to nose in a rich contouring shade, while keeping the eye sockets bright and reflective. Try a highlight powder under the eyes and atop the cheekbones!

3. Don’t Forget the Brows

Add brow shadow. This immediately strengthens and frames the face. It also adds a beautiful balance, particularly when richening up the face for fall.

4. Red Lips Try a bold red lip. They are back for fall! To keep it sophisticated and fresh, make sure to balance your complexion by pulling color through the face. Finish with a coat of mascara.

172 inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

5. Liner 5. Enhance

Line your lips! This is especially important if you are popping a bold lip color. It adds crispness and looks incredible! Widen your top and bottom eyeliner. Extend from corner to corner and take a shadow deep into the crease. The result? A gorgeous fall look.

Enhance your eyes! Apply a mid-toned shadow along the base of the orbital bone. This will grow the eye 30%, giving you a sultry fall look.

taylor-made DINNER

JA CKS ON, M IS S IS S IPPI

Seth Conerly’s great love of horses inspired an intimate rehearsal dinner at Providence Hill Farm. On the evening before marrying his bride, Taylor Townsend, Seth treated his close friends and family to an unforgettable night on the Farm. Seth’s mother, Beverly Conerly, says, “During my first visit to the stable, I envisioned an elegant dinner by candlelight, with a table setting designed to complement the architectural design of the building.” Seth and Taylor toured Providence Hill Farm, and fell in love with the gorgeous venue. Beverly says, “When I asked Seth whether he pictured one long table or individual round tables, he immediately decided one long table would feel like ‘family’ gathered together.” Beverly and her husband, Dr. Don Conerly, hosted the romantic evening for Seth and Taylor, and Beverly planned every exquisite detail. Seth’s personality shone perfectly throughout the evening. While appetizers were passed, a handlebar mustache motif adorned Seth’s favorite food and drink: hot boiled crawfish and vanilla coke. Friends and family were seated at an eighty-foot banquet table, where they were treated to an incredible dinner. The table was flooded with white hydrangeas and roses, and candles created a beautiful, warm glow. Beverly smiles, “I could see the table and décor in my mind after my first visit to Providence Hill Farm. It came together exactly as I had envisioned. I will always cherish that night in my heart and mind.” After a delicious meal, Don and Beverly shared a sweet blessing over Seth and Taylor, and presented the couple with thoughtful gifts. Beverly gave Taylor a delicate diamond necklace, designed especially for the bride. The diamonds were sweetly taken from a pair of earrings that Don had given Beverly when Seth was born. Seth received a devotional book on marriage that his parents began on their first day as husband and wife over thirty years ago. Beverly says sweetly, “As an additional surprise to both Seth and Taylor, my husband and I had someone sing a song called “Tailor Made” by Colbie Caillat. We rewrote the song especially for Seth, because we knew in our hearts that God had tailor-made ‘Taylor’ especially for Seth. She is everything we have always prayed for him.”

A Gown Adored by generations W R I T T EN BY MI TC HELL WA LTE RS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY CHRIS TINA FOTO

“I bought my wedding gown in 1954 for $300 at the New York Fashion Shop in Iowa. It was quite a dress. With delicate Alençon lace, a sweetheart neckline and long sleeves, it was simply breathtaking.” Like most newlyweds, Mary Cobb packed away her precious gown after the wedding. “When it came time for my daughters, Mary Al and Susan, to get married, my husband told them, ‘I’m not buying you a new dress. There’s a perfectly good dress in the closet,’” laughs Mary. “They were not eager! But they wore it to please their daddy, and they looked beautiful.” Mary, affectionately known as “Ama” by her nine grandchildren, was shocked when her granddaughter, Leah Cox Hendrix, approached her about wearing the lace gown. Leah says, “I am extremely sentimental. My mom and aunt had worn it, and when I got engaged, I knew my grandmother had the dress packed away at her house. I tried it on and it fit like a glove. It was absolutely perfect.” Leah started an extraordinary tradition among her cousins, and with the help of Jackson seamstress, Sandra Ashford, it has been exquisitely restored for each bride. When Jenny Cobb Sneed became engaged, she shopped around for a new wedding gown. Leah laughs, “Jenny called me and said, ‘I cannot find a dress that I love as much as Ama’s.’” The 1954 dress fit Jenny stunningly. Jenny was living in Manhattan at the time and shot incredible bridal portraits throughout New York City. Mary laughs, “I did not think the dress would survive!” But it did. Sara Jimenez Burns was the next to marry, and she embellished the gown with a lovely new cummerbund. With her fiancée standing at a handsome 6’ 8”, Sandra mended the sleeves so that Sara could reach up and embrace her new husband. After Sara, Lauren Cobb Steele chose to wear her sweet grandmother’s dress. She reflects, “I wore it just like Ama did, which felt so special. I love the look of the gown because it is from the 1950’s: the feminine lines and elegant details make it beautifully regal. If the dress is still intact, I would absolutely love for my daughters to wear it one day.” Mary says with awe, “It confor ms to each girl perfectly. It is truly a magical dress. My mother would be so pleased, because she helped me pick out the dress. I think she is in Heaven smiling, because she knows.” The dress will make its next debut when Mary’s last granddaughter, Mary Grace, gets married. “She tells me, ‘Ama, I have to wear the dress,’” smiles Mary. “We will put it together beautifully somehow.”

A blooming courtyard set a magical scene for Milla James’ first birthday celebration. Inspired by Milla’s beloved BlaBla Dolls, feminine colors were woven throughout every sweet detail of the event. BlaBla Dolls are precious hand-made products for children, knitted by artisans in Peru. Each doll is carefully created with soft fabrics and vibrant colors. Naturally, they inspired a perfect palette for Milla’s party. Virginia and Hunter Evans wanted to celebrate their first child with a memorable event. Virginia says, “I wanted to show her that she is loved unconditionally and irrevocably. She has blessed us in more ways that we will ever be able to tell her in words, and we wanted to portray these feelings to her with the most important people to us in the same space.” LeFluer East Foundation’s sunroom and courtyard provided a beautiful venue, and sunlight flooded the party with a rosy glow. A white cake adorned with pastel roses served as the centerpiece of the party, as guests enjoyed sweet treats and discovered the birthday girl’s new tee pee. It was a memorable affair for Milla and her family. Virginia smiles and reflects, “The smile that you see on my husband’s face is constant. He is such an amazing husband, and I wouldn’t want to be on this journey of marriage and motherhood with any other man. That smile on Milla’s face is one that the entire world has seen. It’s her signature look. That scrunched nose and smile. It is one of the many reasons I adore her. And the smile on my face is because of the happiness that these two human beings make me feel daily.”

JEFF GO O D! W R I TTE N B Y MI TC HELL WA LT ERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AD AM + ALLI PHOTOGRA P H Y

Jeff Good had never stepped foot in Mississippi. It was his senior year of high school, and the handsome and gregarious teen left Salt Lake City, Utah, and moved to Jackson. His father had accepted a position as Dean of Students at Millsaps College. Jeff enrolled at Murrah High School, and a boy named Dan Blumenthal befriended the new student. “We became fast friends and good friends. Best friends,” says Jeff. Dan remembers their first meeting. “He was chewing on his pen one day in class and all of the ink leaked into his mouth and he started gagging in the middle of class. The teacher asked him to show her what was in his mouth, and he stuck out his tongue. It was blue. We all started cracking up and at that point I knew that Jeff was special!” laughs Dan. Dan attended college in California, and Jeff earned a degree in Business Administration from Millsaps College. “Moving to Jackson was hard, and I continued acting out my freshman year of college. So, I ended up taking five years to get through school,” admits Jeff. His college sweetheart, Debbie McGregor, had already graduated from Millsaps and was working as a high school Latin teacher. He laughs, “She was just waiting for her husband-to-be to please graduate!” Jeff finally donned his cap and gown, began working as a computer salesman for the NCR Corporation, and married his love. He reflects, “We set roots in Jackson at that point and created our lives here. This became our home and we built a nice group of friends.” Jeff and Debbie became very involved with Ballet Mississippi, volunteering and hosting magnificent parties following performances. Jeff smiles, “We did professional level catering out of my house. We prepared a lot of food and had gorgeous table decorations. We raised a lot of money and support for the ballet. I made some amazing Jackson connections.” Meanwhile, Jeff unexpectedly lost his job when his division closed nation-wide. “I looked for sales positions, but was unable to find anything. I was frustrated for months,” he says. A call to San Francisco changed everything. Dan answered his phone and Jeff said, “I don’t know what I’m going to do. I can’t do my own thing here. We should go into business together.” Dan was in culinary school and the two began talking about opening a restaurant. Dan reflects, “I was sad to be leaving California, but I knew it was time to turn over a new leaf in my life. To have my own restaurant was a blessing that was only going to happen in Mississippi.” They developed the idea of an innovative restaurant with dishes inspired by traditional Italian food. With a business plan written for BRAVO! Italian Restaurant & Bar, Jeff got to work. “I took a commercial loan officer to lunch on the top of The University Club. As we gazed out over the city of Jackson, I told him our idea for BRAVO! and asked for half a million dollars. He looked at me and said, ‘That’s not going to happen. You have no money, so you cannot borrow money.’” “I knew I had to make this work,” says Jeff. He approached the board members at Ballet Mississippi and they served as valuable resources. Jeff formed a partnership and decided to sell shares of stock. “That’s where my skills as a sales person came in. I prospected 750 people face-to-face.”

Jeff and Debbie opened their tiny, two-bedroom bungalow for extravagant dinner parties every Tuesday and Thursday night. Guests were fed delectable choices from the Bravo! menu, and people were shocked and delighted to taste delicacies they had never seen in an Italian restaurant. Over time, Jeff fed 250 people. Forty-four of these dinner guests invested $10,000 each. BRAVO! was born. “We opened BRAVO! on April 7, 1994 and we have not looked back since,” smiles Jeff. “Six years later, we opened Broad Street Baking Company, and an additional nine years later, Sal & Mookie’s New York Pizza and Ice Cream Joint.” Dan and Jeff opened all three businesses together. Jeff laughs, “We are like an old married couple. We are way too familiar with each other now.” Jeff serves as President of Mangia Bene Restaurant Management Group, the owner and operator of BRAVO!, Broad Street and Sal & Mookie’s. The restaurants operate a full-service catering business, Mangia Bene Catering, with partnerships in fabulous venues throughout the Jackson area. BRAVO!, Broad Street and Sal & Mookie’s are located in the city of Jackson. “We are Jackson boys. There was never a discussion of building our restaurants outside of the city,” says Jeff. “Banner Hall was an extraordinary opportunity for Broad Street Baking Company. It was half-empty and we had the chance to work with Johnny Evans at Lemuria and envision a revitalized Banner Hall that was owned by tenants. Sal & Mookie’s was opened in 2006. It was a tough time, post Hurricane Katrina, and Jackson was struggling for an identity. So we decided to place a family concept on a deserted street in a burned-out restaurant and see what happened. Through Sal & Mookie’s, we have introduced the city to Fondren.” Jackson’s future is looking even brighter. Jeff is engaged in creating the first-ever Food Hub for central Mississippi, to be located at the Old Farmer’s Market in Jackson. Set to launch this spring, this support organization f o r loca l f a r m e rs w ill be a w ho le s ale distribution center. “A food hub is an effective way to build an economy,” says Jeff. “We want to act as a catalyst for positive change by creating a vibrant local food system. I have been in the restaurant business for twenty-three years, and I will continue that, but I also want to focus on creating a better Mississippi.” It is extraordinary what a boy from Utah has accomplished in Jackson, Mississippi. He is a devoted husband and father, and recently sent his twin daughters, Alex and Carly, off to college. Jeff has won countless awards, served on numerous boards and is Chair of Vision 2022, a bold 10-year strategic plan for Jackson. Refreshingly, Jeff remains genuine, humble, and kind. Dan says, “Jeff is honest and hardworking as the day is long. What you see is really what you get with Jeff.” “Jackson has been so good to us and we are here to serve the community. We are serving hospitality to our guests and teaching hospitality and grace to our employees,” smiles Jeff. “I absolutely love this community.”

Natchez, Mississippi, “where the river is wide and the history runs deep.” This magnificent city, founded by the French in 1716, is celebrating 300 years in 2016. “We are using this year to bring the community together, invite more visitors and celebrate Natchez,” smiles Jennifer Ogden Combs, Executive Director of the Natchez Tricentennial Commission. “We will be commemorating the past, celebrating the present and creating the future.” Natchez is a destination city; over 600,000 visitors flock to the lovely town every year. Mayor Larry L. “Butch” Brown says proudly, “Natchez offers the attractions of a desirable small city – shopping, nightlife, casino gaming, and a safe, walkable historic downtown. With one of the largest collections of historic buildings in the country, breathtaking scenery, fascinating stories and legendary hospitality – our city has something for everyone.” 2016 will be simply spectacular. Natchez hosts annual events such as Pilgrimage Tours, Zydego Music Festival and the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race. Whether you are traveling from across the state or across the globe, Natchez is a visitors’ dream. The Tricentennial event will not take away from these fabulous annual events; it will only enhance them. Jennifer says, “We want to add something a little bit special to each of these wonderful events. Our goal is to use our 300 years to create a stronger future.”

With the hope of uniting the Natchez community and elevating the city’s profile nationally and internationally, the Tricentennial is offering fantastic new events. One of the standouts is the Natchez History Minute, recorded by 366 members of the community. These brief videos will be released daily, featuring a fascinating look at something that occurred on that day in Natchez history. Jennifer says, “This truly brings the community together and makes them feel a part of this anniversary. They are becoming engaged and celebrating this city.” Other highlights include an international basketball tournament, typically held in Great Britain, and an exciting European Autofest. Even Natchez native Glen Ballard, a six-time Grammy winner, will be in town on the opening night of Showboat. “He has worked with everyone from Barbara Streisand to Elton John,” says Jennifer with awe. “On opening night, he is going to recount all of the Mississippi inspirations that have helped his incredible career. He will perform along with a community fellowship choir.” What a year 2016 promises to be. Whether you are in Natchez to explore a hidden garden, enjoy the vibrant music scene, or simply learn about its historic past, this magical city will not disappoint. Jennifer smiles, “Yes, we have beautiful Antebellum homes, but we want to tell all of the stories that are a part each home.”

Vow Renwal H O P E I N TH E MID S T OF PAIN JA CKS ON, M IS S IS S IPPI

It was a perfect morning. Paula Stodghill and her two daughters, Racheal and Hope, piled into bed and devoured a plate of homemade waffles, drizzled in chocolate. Paula’s husband, Flint, then presented each of his three girls a box of gourmet chocolates. “My flavor was wedding cake chocolate,” reflects Paula. “Flint had placed my engagement ring inside, and it was sparkling in the center chocolate. It was so thoughtful, but I didn’t think much of it because it was Valentine’s Day.” Flint, stricken with cancer, was no longer able to speak to his beloved wife of twenty years. Instead, he sweetly held up a piece of paper that said, “Paula, will you marry me?” He carefully unfolded the paper and revealed another note. “Today at Calgary Baptist Church. 1:00pm.” Shocked, Paula shouted, “Yes!” Hope laughs, “Dad was SO excited about his surprise and mom was hysterical. She was so excited and her reactions were too funny and sweet.” Paula says with awe, “He was just trying to make us a lot of wonderful memories. He made every minute count.” Two decades earlier, Paula eyed a handsome college boy teaching a soccer clinic. “I remember thinking how cute he was and how sweet he was with the kids,” says Paula. The two connected on the evening of his 21st birthday and sparks flew. Within six months, they were husband and wife. Paula laughs, “It was quite an adventure and our lives continued to be an adventure.” In September 2013, Flint was diagnosed with oral cancer. Paula reflects, “We didn’t think it was a big deal, because we believed it was curable. The cancer was surgically removed from his tongue and jaw, but a month later, it returned with a vengeance. Doctors at The University of Mississippi Medical Center offered an extreme surgery to remove his tongue, voice box and jawbone. “He prayed about it and said, ‘Let’s go for it,’” says Paula. “They only gave him a 20% chance of remission with the surgery, but he wanted to fight and do something drastic for his girls.”

Hope reflects, “I remember just how much he loved us. The way he would express his love was so forward and apparent. He would trap me in a big, long hug and say, ‘I love my girls.’ He was so comforting and so caring and he sought to raise us serving the Lord in love and faith.” Despite Flint’s aggressive surgery, the cancer returned. “I had always wanted to do a vow renewal, but he has never really been big on it. He actually fought me on it,” laughs Paula. “But he did it for me, which was amazing. He wanted to surprise me, which was really sweet. I walked into the church, Molly Gee did my makeup, my daughters put me in a dress, and it was go time!” Racheal says, “Hope and I got to stand with them and I am sure there was not a dry eye in the crowd that day. It was beautiful to see them up there, standing in the middle of their ‘for worse’ moment, giving it to God and allowing Him to shine through the darkness.” Flint passed away shortly after their tender vow renewal. “He had a great, simple view of the world that was inspiring to me. My dad was my best friend,” says Racheal. “It’s hard to talk about him without a stream of tears running down my face, because of the special bond we had.” Hope adds, “Dad was just so strong and faithful throughout his struggles and trials with cancer. It was hard, but he made everyday worthwhile and taught me so much about what it means to have joy in the midst of trial. He presented a true picture of perseverance and love in everything he went through. His journey and his death were, and still are, instrumental in strengthening me and making me who I am and who I will be.” At the end of his remarkable life, Paula says, “Racheal and I had several dreams that Flint could talk and eat, and was back to normal.” She adds beautifully, “But thankfully he is back to normal now because he is in Heaven with Jesus.”

“Every story has a beginning.

Some build slowly over time, steeped in history and a collection of stories from a time long past. Some burst brightly out of darkness and seem to shift the world beneath our feet. Others pass us by, unrecognized, until their beauty reveals itself and we look back and see a beauty greater still in the way everything just seems to have ‘always been,’” says Lauren Nester Zumwalt, owner of Rasberry Greene. “Our beginning is all of these - our story is wrapped in history and the memories of others; it is fueled by an idea that seems to burn brighter with every passing moment and inspired, even still, by the way things have always been.” Lauren’s parents, Joe and Betty Nester, built a beautiful lake and charming cottage in Soso, Mississippi, in the mid-1990s. The property, called Rasberry Greene, quickly became the family’s favorite weekend getaway. Lauren smiles, “My husband, Donnie, and I spent every Saturday morning on our favorite place, the front porch, listening to the woods wake up and enjoying the peaceful setting.” One morning, while sipping coffee and admiring the gorgeous pine trees towering over them, they became overwhelmed with joy and gratitude for the beautiful spot. “We wanted to find a way to share that feeling with others, and to feel like Rasberry Greene is their home place. We want them to feel welcomed, to feel taken care of, to feel the draw of the land. We want them to enjoy the peace and quiet of the country, to relax and enjoy a slower pace.” Lauren’s son, Casey, and his wife, Laura, are talented wedding photographers, and encouraged Lauren and Donnie to create a lovely wedding venue. Lauren says, “One thing led to another and The Gin at Rasberry Greene was born! Our name comes from my maternal grandfather, William Greene Rasberry, who owned a cotton gin and general mercantile store in downtown Soso during the 1920s through 1950s. We love the little town of Soso and our Bernis Hill Road friends and neighbors, and we hope the folks who visit Rasberry Greene will love it, too!” The wedding venue, reminiscent of an old cotton gin, was built out of the heart and soul of this dear family. “We incorporated the little lake house into the design, which meant so much to my daddy. The building is constructed of beautiful, native cypress with polished natural concrete floors and galvanized ceiling,” reflects Lauren. “It’s not just a place to get married but a home for the beginning of each couples’ story.” Whether a bride dreams of a rustic, industrial or romantic setting for her vows, The Gin at Rasberry Greene provides a fabulous backdrop. The Gin is also a perfect reception spot, with vintage décor, beautiful lighting, delicious fare and sweets, antique farm tables, and steaming cider and coffee bars. Lauren smiles, “Donnie and I want our couples and families to feel like they have been loved on and taken care of to the very best of our ability. After the wedding weekend is done, we want them to have fond memories of our little spot in the woods, and to know they are always welcome to come home to Rasberry Greene.”

KREWE OF ZEUS 1940

HAT T IE S BURG, M IS S IS S IPPI

On a gorgeous winter day, a Hattiesburg community center opened its doors for a beloved Mardi Gras event. Guests were warmly ushered into a bright and beautiful ballroom, glowing in pastel shades of pink, coral and gold. For months, John David Williams, owner of Fearless Entertaining, and Anne Lauren Gammill secretly and carefully created every exquisite detail of the Queen’s Festival. 2015 marked the 75th anniversary of the Mystic Krewe of Zeus, and Anne served as the lovely Queen of the diamond jubilee. “The Queen’s Festival is a direct representation of the Queen,” says John David. “I took my lead from Anne. She is very feminine and envisioned the color palette of the party.” John David added his glamorous touch to the event as well. “We had a gorgeous chandelier created for the Krewe of Zeus King’s Feast and the Queen’s Festival. It was a gold and crystal chandelier, and was quite special. It set the tone of the party and perfectly anchored the room.” With the help of Pretty Presentations, the tablescapes and delicious fare blended beautifully with the florals and décor. John David reflects, “The room and the Queen were just radiant. And more than anything, the space was pretty, soft and feminine because it had Anne’s touch.” Anne says, “One of my favorite things about the event was the artist who painted the party. I now have it hanging in my house as a memory that I will never forget!”

SIMMONS CATFISH A DEVOTED FAMILY W R I TTE N B Y MI TC HELL WA LT ERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AD AM + ALLI PHOTOGRA P H Y

As Mark Twain once wisely declared, “The catfish is a plenty good enough fish for anyone.” Thanks to the fertile land blanketing the Delta, Mississippi has become the top producer of one of the most wholesome foods in the country: the catfish. For over thirty years, a family-owned and operated company in Yazoo City has dominated the catfish farming industry by raising, harvesting, processing and distributing flavorful, clean catfish. Growing up on a handsome Delta farm, a young Harry Simmons dreamed of one day becoming a farmer. “This was a farming community and everyone worked in some type of agriculture,” recalls Harry. After graduating from college with a degree in Agricultural Economics, Harry eagerly returned to his roots. “I used a small piece of land that my dad gave me, purchased an additional 500 acres, and began farming.” Today, Harry works and lives on much of the same land that sparked his passion as a boy. In 1974, Harry grew his first crop, cotton and soybeans, which produced an impressive, healthy harvest. However, the next year’s crop was a disappointment, and Harry sought economic stability. He laughs, “So, I began thinking about catfish.” Farming catfish was a new phenomenon in the Delta, and Harry was intrigued. “With the type of land that I was farming, catfish seemed to be the best thing to produce. My land has an abundance of water, and its clay-type soil holds water well.” Simmons Catfish was born.

232 inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

Harry began stocking his first catfish ponds in 1978, and by 1982, his business was flourishing! “That’s when we created the Simmons Farmed Raised Catfish Processing Plant and began processing and selling our brand. We started selling locally at first, then branched out across the country,” says Harry. Simmons Catfish quickly became known for its exceptional quality and taste. “When we started, we hoped to process about 20-25,000 live pounds per week. Now, we process around 75-100,000 live pounds daily,” says Harry. Often called the “super fish,” catfish is a low-cholesterol, high-protein source of heart-healthy Omega 3 fatty acids, offering 100% of the daily requirement for energy boosting vitamin B12. Willard Scott of the Today Show even famously proclaimed, “If I go down for anything in history, I would like to be known as the person who convinced the American People that catfish is one of the finest eating fishes in the world.” The Simmons Catfish farm is located in the heart of the Delta, and their exquisitely clear ponds are supplied from spring fed aquifers found 100 feet below the soil, promising a product that is safe for the environment and a sustainable food source. Simmons Catfish feeds their farm-raised fish a mixture of grain, protein and vitamins, giving their catfish its signature taste – delicious, clean and fresh. The Simmons love of catfish does not end with Harry. His daughter, Katy Simmons Prosser, is a remarkably talented chef. Trained at The French Culinary Institute (now known as The International Culinary Center), in New York City, Katy spent seven years working in the competitive food industry. In October 2012, Katy joined her father at Simmons Catfish, and immediately created a brand new Marketing division. She has developed an attractive website, featuring everything from recipes to Simmons Swag, and Katy successfully reaches clients and potential customers through social media. She also wows coworkers with her culinary skills. Katy laughs, “Since our office is in the middle of nowhere, we are usually cooking something all of the time!” Harry says with awe, “Katy has been able to strengthen our brand and reach more people than I certainly would. I am so pleased to have her here!” Katy is devotedly carrying the family business into the future. She says, “We are very excited about what’s in store for Simmons Catfish. The consumer seems really interested in learning more about local farm-to-table companies and knowing where their food comes from these days. We hope to build on this excitement and make sure catfish continues to be the staple food of the south for many generations to come.” There is no doubt Harry is delighted with Katy’s work and her innate enthusiasm for Simmons Catfish. “I am just encouraged that some of our younger generation is willing to get into the farming and agricultural community,” Harry admits. “As a family enterprise, I am so happy to have Katy involved. I also have a nephew who manages the farm at the plant. I am hoping they can continue this business if they want to. We will continue to grow our brand, a brand known for good quality and honest, dependable packing, service and delivery,” says Harry. “I look forward to them taking charge and continuing to pursue growth in the company as we have for the past 30 or more years.” This dedicated family and their loyal team are committed to producing “Flavor fresh from the pond to your plate.” Katy says warmly, “Most Mississippians have very fond memories of growing up around a catfish fry with family, and I hope they feel a sense of pride that this southern dish comes from their home state.”

About Jill: About 8 years ago, I began to notice that all of my friends were asking me to help plan their family vacations. I took it as a sign, and realized that my true calling was to be a travel professional. I love that I have the chance to create customized travel itineraries for my clients, focusing on the details that make every trip nothing short of amazing. I believe that travel is more than just reaching a new destination; it's about immersing yourself in the experience. I am a Certified Travel Agent and Accredited Cruise Counselor who loves to plan unique trips for my clients. I love to book all-inclusive vacations to the Caribbean for couples who want to escape reality and bask in the sun, and I enjoy creating Disney vacation itineraries for families who want to experience a magical and memorable trip. In addition, I enjoy creating customized travel itineraries for my clients who want to experience the world. I once booked a European tour for clients who wanted to stay exclusively in castles. I also planned a trip to Costa Rica for clients who wanted to experience both adventure and relaxation The first week of the trip focused on white water rafting, exploring the rainforest and checking out active volcanoes, while the second week was spent at a luxurious all-inclusive resort with fantastic views and premier amenities. I pride myself on my customer service skills. My clients continually return to me because I offer them unique opportunities that can't be found by simply booking a trip on the Internet. I specialize in finding those hidden treasures at each destination, and I work to incorporate them into each trip I book. This is what makes travel magical. Travel may seem overwhelming at first, but I am here to make the process as easy and worry-free as possible.

lveadvice we asked copuples their secrets to a joy-filled marriage

Mary & Ken Rainey What do you admire most about your spouse? Mary: “What I admire most about Ken absolutely did not come naturally to him and I see him struggle with it some days. But it is his ability to WANT to believe that we can have and attain something exceptional. If you limit yourselves in marriage only to what you’ve seen or been exposed to in your past, you’re doing yourself a disservice by limiting the possibility of your vision. I admire Ken’s belief in the exceptionality of marriage.”

35 years

Ken: “Mary’s desire to experience life sans mediocrity! She loves passionately, gives generously, laughs from her very soul and appreciates every fleeting moment as a gift. Most of us spend our entire lives failing to seize opportunity…Mary creates it!”

Do you have any favorite memories with your spouse? Lindsay: “My favorite memory is the day our twins, Addie and Teddy, were born. It was a day full of excitement and joy and one that we will always treasure.”

Lisa & Nick Doty

Mindi & Joey Kern What do you admire most about your spouse? Joey: “This is a bit of an impossible question to answer, because there are so many things that I admire about my wife. But what I adore most is her unrelenting courage and willingness to stand up for the people, things and ideas that she believes in and cares about.”

Lindsay & Brian Hamm

Brian: “Other than the day our children were born, I would say my favorite memory was early one morning at 4am when we’d both been up all night with irritable children, just after they finally went to sleep. Something, in spite of all the stress and lack of sleep, made us break out into laughter together. It was very fun to know that we could do that when both of our stress levels were very high, and we wanted nothing more than peace and quiet.”

6 years

Mindi: “You know what’s great is that even if I wasn’t married to Joey, I would still like and respect him as a person. I’ve always said that I like him as much as I love him, and that we have a true friendship as the base of our marriage.”

7 years

What is your secret to a long and loving marriage?

Lisa: “Learning to compromise. Learning to take a deep breath, a moment, before speaking. And realize that it’s not necessarily a fairytale, but make it your own love story, not someone else’s.” Nick: “Asking what I can do to make our marriage stronger, and not focusing on what she is doing.”

4 years

Amanda & Nathan Wells

Brenda & Bryman Williams

Does faith play a role in your marriage? Nathan: “Faith is central to our marriage. When we took vows almost twelve years ago, we took those vows very seriously. We knew there would be tough times, there would be times we didn’t like each other a whole lot, but we have been and will continue to be committed to the vows that we took before God and our families.” Amanda: “Absolutely! We are blessed to have each other, but our marriage is nothing without a firm foundation to stand on. Our foundation is a love of Jesus Christ. He loved us despite our many, many flaws, which I think is pretty indicative of what marriage should be.”

Do you have any favorite memories with your spouse? Bryman: “One of our favorite moments occurred while we dated in college. I invited her to my house. I had purchased a meal and wine. We ate dinner while listening to Al Green's music.”

12 years

Brenda: “I have a number of favorite moments. The one that stands out occurred while visiting a major city with our daughter, Jordan, who was two-years-old at the time. He put our daughter, Jordan, and me to the far side of the sidewalk away from the traffic. It may sound trivial but that showed his love and concern for his family.”

19 years

Kristen & Colby Mason What do you admire most about your spouse? Colby: “Kristen’s work ethic and her faith. She has a big faith in God, and also in me. She supports me no matter what. I love the way she does for others. She is the best teacher and mother.” Kristen: “Besides how handsome he is? How hard he works for our family. He puts all into his work everyday to provide for us and take care of us. He also gives the best bear hugs after I’ve had a long day.”

5 years Caroline & Reed Hogan What do you admire most about your spouse? “I admire so many things about Reed. He loves and leads his five girls better than anyone I know. He is such a servant and he genuinely wants each of us to feel like a princess. It is precious!”

12 years

Do you have any favorite memories with your spouse? “I feel like we've already been blessed with a lifetime of amazing memories - from high school romance to marriage, to raising a family together. It seems now that all of our recent favorite memories are centered around fellowship, laughter and great food!”

Rochelle & Jason Hicks Does faith play a role in your marriage? Rochelle: “Faith has always played a role in our marriage and we have been richly blessed. We attend Broadmoor Baptist Church and also have a strong Christian family to support us and our marriage.”

16 years

Jason: “Absolutely, faith plays an enormous role not only in our marriage, but all aspects of our lives. It is faith that not only helps to overcome the struggles of life, but faith that guides us through the obstacles we face with our marriage. Marriage was bestowed upon us as a gift from God. So without faith in God, what is a marriage? You cannot have one without the other.”

Christina & Doyle Smith What is your secret to a long and loving marriage? “We have been married for seven years. Our secret is enjoying life and enjoying each other. Living life to the max and never take each other or anything for granted. No matter what life presents us, we are stronger together.”

16 years

5 years

Paula & Lex Davis What advice can you offer other couples hoping for a lasting marriage? “A few things…Compromise: Selfish does not work in a marriage. Share tasks: Guys, don’t be afraid of a little housework. A washing machine doesn’t bite. Go out TOGETHER: This may not be true for everyone, but going out alone or with your friends can lead to problems. Happy wife, happy life: That mantra has never let me down.”

Tina & Clay Hooker How do you express love for your spouse? And how does your spouse make you feel loved?

25 years

Photography by Carlyn Photography Thank you to all of our couples for taking the time to be photographed and answering these questions for us. Be looking for more of these questions on our blog - inspirationms.com

Tina: “I express my love by taking interest in things that he likes. For instance, I’ll read the baseball headlines on Fox Sports before I leave work each night to educate myself so I can have an intelligent conversation about the Cubs with him at dinner. He really appreciates that! In turn, he makes me feel loved because he accepts me for who I am…the good and the bad.” Clay: “I express my love by making her laugh and encouraging her to fulfill all of her dreams and aspirations. Tina makes me feel loved when she tells me she is proud of me for an accomplishment. She is also the most thoughtful gift giver I’ve ever known.”

“I grew up in New Albany, Mississippi, surrounded by a lot of

family. I had the perfect small town childhood,” reflects Catherine Ann Herrington Davis, Owner of Hi Y’all! Made In The South. Catherine Ann and her husband, Parker Davis, design and sell custom artwork, apparel and pillows, inspired by the colorful people, beautiful places and traditions in the South that have influenced their lives. Catherine Ann says, “Southerners are confident, excellent cooks, and know how to have a good time.” Catherine Ann is gorgeous, humble and sweet, and has an infectious passion for Mississippi. As a graphic design student at the University of Mississippi, Catherine Ann started making pillows for her graduation thesis project. She laughs, “It is hard to believe I am still making pillows today!” The Hi Y’all! Brand has completely exploded, and it all started at the kitchen table. In the spring of 2012, Catherine Ann was brainstorming ideas for a business name, and Hi Y’all! Just clicked. She smiles, “Little did my husband know, that one day we would be building a brand together under the same roof.” Catherine Ann says, “My artwork and love for the South are tightly interwoven. My past experiences and the memories from growing up in Mississippi create the imagery for my artwork.” Inspiration abounds in Mississippi, and Catherine Ann designs each piece with its own story. She says, “One of my favorite paintings was inspired while stopped at a stop sign. I saw children playing in a church playground and was reminded of my summers at vacation Bible school. ‘Jesus Loves the Little Children’ is one of the first songs I learned, and it reminds me today to love others and have faith like a child.” Many of her pieces feature quintessential southern sayings, guaranteed to make you smile. She says, “When I was a child, I loved listening to my mother talk on the phone. Southern conversations are the best. My favorite sayings are ‘Bless your heart!’ and ‘My mama said.’” Catherine Ann and Parker proudly make all of their Hi Y’all! products by hand in their studio garage in Starkville. With their business growing rapidly, they hope to one day expand into a studio space with a storefront. Catherine Ann smiles, “The Southerner in me enjoys meeting new people and making those Mississippi connections!” She reflects, “Parker and I feel so blessed to call Mississippi home. My dad gave me the best advice for owning your own business. He said, ‘Always work hard and remember who you are.’ This is the official Hi Y’all Motto.”

INSPIRATIONAL M I S S I S S I P P I A N B.B. KING W RI T T EN BY MI TC HELL WALTE RS | ARTWORK BY H.C. PORTE R

He was a tremendous talent. With a beautiful roar in his voice and fingers that effortlessly slid along his beloved guitar strings, Riley B “B.B.” King became one of the most influential artists in the world. For decades, The King of the Blues tirelessly charmed fans. Each night, B.B. King would sit down, lean back, tap his toes, and begin to play. His music could set your soul on fire. The Mississippi-born star picked cotton as a child, and had a warm and gentle spirit. Orphaned at a young age, King was raised by his maternal grandmother. He taught himself to play guitar, and strummed the Blues on the street corners of Indianola. He was like an old friend,” reflects Allan Hammons, who serves on the Board of Directors of the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola. “I think that served him well through life.” Mr. King’s Blues are riveting. You can sense pain, sorrow, and joy wrapped into one song. “He was a tremendously talented musician, a gifted singer and phenomenal guitar player. Eric Clapton once called him ‘The Grand Master,’” recalls Hammons. “I became very fond of Mr. King. Once you met him, you felt like you had known him forever. He was so down to earth it is almost hard to describe. The only thing I knew greater than his talent was his humility.” Hammons met King in 2007, while building the B.B. King Museum. One particular memory stands out in Hammons’ mind. He and Mr. King were riding along with a few friends, listening to Riding With the King, a record featuring duets with Eric Clapton. “It dawned on me. We were actually riding with the King,” Hammons laughs. “When I asked everyone what we were doing, they all seemed confused. I said, ‘Come on, we are riding with the King.’ B.B. fell out laughing with a big old belly laugh,” reflects Hammons. “He was just one of us, and he liked it that way.” “I don’t think there is a more humble person you will ever meet,” reflects attorney and friend, Carver Randle. Randle was born in Indianola in 1942, and spent much of his childhood fascinated with Mr. King, watching him getting in and out of his car. The two finally met in 1978 and quickly became friends. “He warmly related to his audience from the stage, but individually, he was even more down to earth. Having a coke or meal with him, you got the impression that he was a tremendous man with a very pleasing personality, who could relate to anyone.”

250 inspirationms.com | #getinspiredms

Randle had an experience with Mr. King that left him in tears. “We went down to Bossier City to see him perform. I went backstage and said hello, but when the show started, I took my seat in the audience with my wife and family. Mr. King came out and started his concert, but all of a sudden, he completely stopped the band and stared out at the sea of fans. He spoke into the microphone, and said his lawyer was here from his hometown. He asked me to come down front, shook my hand, said a few words, and asked the people to give me an applause,” marvels Randle. “Here I was admiring him, and this world-renowned man stopped his show and asked people to give me a hand. I sat back down and could not control my sobbing. It was truly the dearest moment I have ever experienced.” The audience erupted in a thunderous applause, seeing how highly King regarded Randle. He sweetly says, “That moment stays with me. That is just the kind of person he was.” King won fifteen Grammy awards, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and a Kennedy Center Honor. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and granted a coveted star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1991. Even with his extraordinary success, King never saw himself as a celebrity. He could not fathom that people actually loved listening to his music. Dion Brown served as the past Executive Director of the B.B. King Museum, and came to the job without knowing King. However, Brown quickly viewed King as family. “He was a father to all of us,” smiles Brown. For over three decades, King returned to Indianola and gave a homecoming concert for his adoring fans. “One year, he played for Homecoming, then gave a private concert at the museum. Then Mr. King went to a club and played until 2:30am. Instead of leaving, he shook every hand of those 300 fans in the audience, and had a personal conversation with each person. Who else does that?” says Brown. “It was so important for him to give back to his community. Everybody who met Mr. King had a great story.” Mr. King passed into eternity just months shy of his 90th birthday, but he leaves behind an incredible legacy. “He has inspired me tremendously. My attitude, disposition and outlook on life are similar to his. No matter where I go or what I accomplish, I will always try to be like B.B.,” says Randle. Brown concurs. “To be in the business as long as he was, you cannot find anything negative about him. That is testament to his character. I miss him. I miss his friendship. I really and truly miss him. Just like the world does.”

words to inspire W RI T T EN BY HE ATH FE RGUS ON

INSPIRED TO LOVE 1 Corinthians 13:1-8 1 If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing. 4 Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant 5 or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6 it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 8 [a] Love never ends.

Inspired to love... …intentionally. Some days, our emotions don’t call us to love those around us. Let’s face it, there are people we see and interact with that we’ve never found easy to be nice to, much less love. But we are all we have. Your family, your community, and your planet need your love. They all need an intentional love that is fleshed out in action and deed. Too many times, we wait for the feeling of love to drive us toward the action or deed. Each day, we can make the decision to love beyond our own mood or moment. It is then that the practice of love makes us more available and more capable than our fleeting feelings and emotions ever before allowed. …indiscriminately. We tend to pick and choose whom we love based on how it best serves us. It’s easier to love those who agree with us, or those who love us back, on time, without fail. But oh how we limit ourselves when we do so. Love isn’t a commodity to be leveraged and traded. The danger in this is that we may find ourselves incapable of any true love when we withhold it as if it couldn’t have been freely given all along. Love ignites more love, even from the most surprising places. Give it away. You didn’t earn the love you were given. …intensely. Stepping out and loving deeply and intensely requires risk. The more effort and emotion we put into loving, the more deeply we may be hurt. And truth be told, we will likely be hurt more than once when we love intensely. But the reward and absolute bliss we do find when we love out in the open, with honesty and sacrifice is worth all the hurt, all the risk. Our time, our imagination, our effort, and our hearts may give us a deeper connection with those around us, carrying all of us to new heights. We may find more beyond the risk than we ever imagined Our purpose, our reward, and our hope are tied up in the way we give and receive love. Our connection to our Creator and the rest of His creation is found in the realization of His perfect love for all of us. Our love is His love. As we discover its availability and realize its potential, we are compelled to share it and use it for healing and hope. God’s perfect love works in both directions. It heals the hurts of the past while paving the way toward heaven and glory, in hope. His love is here. His love is available. His love is Christ.
