Welcome!

We are beyond excited to launch MOMMY SAVANT in this wonderful Hoboken Community!! Under the amazing Lady Savant umbrella (Mariel Alvarado & Brandyn Coe Randolph) -- we have some fabulous things to come into 2017. We believe every mom should find and own her (mommy) superpowers because let’s be honest...when mama’s happy, everyone’s happy. We are excited to bring you inspiration and stories from local moms (and dads too) that are embracing this amazing and sometimes messy journey called parenthood. We also want to showcase the best camps, restaurants, shops, salons, play spaces, schools and doctors throughout Hudson County! Our first Winter Guide 2017 showcases Camps and Indoor Play Spaces we believe are relevant to our local families. The “Meet Your Neighbors” section highlights some amazing local families who help make the community so unique. Mommy Savant is 3-tiered – the quarterly, relevant guide for our community, a monthly newsletter highlighting local events and providing info for families, along with our monthly “Mommy Mastermind” events, which will provide educational opportunities. We are so excited to keep this amazing community inspired and in the know!

MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS INTERVIEW

The

Colvin Family W

{12}

e plan to interview and highlight one central family within each Mommy Savant Guide, under our Meet your Neighbors column. I had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Colvin, one of the top producing real estate agents at Keller Williams City Life, and getting to know his beautiful family.

Skylar (age 7) is our “angel” with a heart of gold (exceptions do apply!) and Mikayla (almost 5) is our “devil” with an attitude, but if she loves/likes you, you will know it! Skylar has ADD (like her daddy) and Mikayla has OCD (like her mommy) and this is a reality of our family dynamic we all embrace!

Hi Nick! Introduce us to the family…

When did you move to Hoboken?

Carrie, my wife, was a 5th grade teacher for 12 years and is now a Reading Specialist at St. Cloud Elementary in West Orange. She is remarkably organized and taskoriented/minded; these qualities enable her to balance work and being a mom as well as anyone I’ve come across. Carrie’s compassionate and loving nature are instrumental character traits that make her the best “teacher”, for not only our two girls, but for all the students she interfaces with daily. I may be biased but just ask her Principal and colleagues and they will tell you the same!

Carrie moved to town with friends all the way back in 2002 and convinced me to leave Manhattan the following year, in 2003. We rented a 1 bedroom together at The Shipyard, and from that point on, Hoboken became our home. Neither of us would have ever guessed that 14 years later we would still be living here and loving it more than ever, but it happened all the same. How have you seen the community/ neighborhood change? When we first got here in the early 2000’s, Hoboken was stigmatized as:

// for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com

#HOBOKEN // MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS

1) A “just-out-of-college renters’ haven” for those who could afford to move out of their parents’ house, wanted/needed to be close to Manhattan, and ultimately couldn’t afford NYC. AND/OR 2) A town of old townhomes/brownstones that “Hoboken lifers” lived in as single-family residences and whom had lived in these same homes for most of their lives. These perceptions were based on some truths/ realities but were always grossly exaggerated by those who “heard about” Hoboken but had never spent time here. Most people failed to see it coming (besides those living in town who were paying attention to real estate development and trends) but it came harder and faster than most anyone could have imagined. The “it” I’m referring to was the development of the northeast waterfront and the explosion of luxury high-rise rental buildings (via The Applied Companies), and moreover, luxury condominium buildings (via Toll Bros). The “Shipyard and Toll Communities” throughout the northeastern section of town are now what many, especially those coming across the river from Manhattan and Brooklyn, think of first when they consider real estate in Hoboken. Today, these “luxury/full amenity” high-rise buildings/developments, along with the massive mid-rise condo development that’s taken place over the past 15 years, are as emblematic of Hoboken’s landscape as the brownstones/townhomes that were built a century (or more) ago. The most notable demographic change in recent years is quite simply that families are staying longer now and in some cases staying “forever”. Hoboken’s top-notch Pre-K and Kindergarten programs are the catalyst for this, along with the emergence of charter and private school options offered to parents of kids of all ages throughout Hoboken.

What is your favorite neighborhood walk? Our favorite “walk” is along Sinatra Drive because of the continuous stretch of breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline along the Hudson River. I prefer to ride my electric scooter vs walking I must admit! Carrie is an avid runner so you’ll usually see her running on the paths of Sinatra and at a insane pace mind you! Tell us about your favorite neighborhood activities. • The Farmer’s Market (with kids) • Diamond Gymnastics (with kids) • “The Pier” (without kids preferably!) Favorite local restaurant? Anthony David’s & Tutta Pesca Favorite Bar? City Bistro What do you find most unique about living in this community? A small town of one square mile that possesses so much diversity (in all facets) is what is most unique about Hoboken. Age and ethnicity are just the proverbial “tip of the iceberg” that are entrenched amongst this wonderfully eclectic mix! Hoboken is made up of: singles versus couples, couples with kids versus couples without kids (these couples most likely have a dog!), divorcees versus empty nesters, liberals versus conservatives, business-minded versus artistic-minded, “kids” just out of college versus “adults” that wish they were still in college (Carrie will tell you this best describes me by the way!), and more than ever, we are attracting the “NYCer” from across the river because the word is now out…HOBOKEN ROCKS! *Fun Fact- As far as “density”, a real estate term that describes population per square block/ mile, Hoboken ranks 4th in the country.

ith a combined total of nearly three decades in Hoboken, Nicole and Kevin Jurick met at Green Rock in 2004 (dollar drafts make dreams come true!), and now are raising their two boys Will, 4, and Nolan 2, PLUS baby three due in weeks. Kevin loves having a short enough commute to his finance job in the city that he’s still able to enjoy weekday breakfast with his boys, and Nicole works in town as owner and founder of Peasful Kitchen, a cooking school for parents that teaches a variety of cooking classes, including: baby showers, baby food, toddler food, and family meals. As part of the double-stroller crowd, this party of (almost) 5, can often be found trekking up to Will’s preschool, Park Prep Academy, in Jersey City Heights--just a short walk from the 9th street elevator--followed by an after school snack of tres leches cake (for Will and Nolan) and a cafe con leche (for mom) at Rumbas next door, playing hide and seek in the city’s many parks, passing Saturday afternoons at family swim at the Sky Club, and spending Sunday mornings at St. Francis Church. Mom’s solo time is spent sweating at CKO kickboxing, while dad gets his workout fix at Susan Tee Fitness. Green Rock nights have been replaced by pizza nights at Delfinos or Napoli’s that often turn out equally as wild and crazy. There are just as much noise, always a spilled drink, and sometimes someone in your party starts dancing on a chair.

e’re Jen, Evan, Mila, and Ryan--a family of 4 with both children born and (being) raised in Hoboken. Mila is a kindergartner at Hoboken Catholic Academy (HCA) and Ryan is a preschooler at Miles Square-Demarest. We’re parishioners at Ss Peter & Paul Catholic Church, where both children were baptized. You can usually find us at Church Square Park, or catch a glimpse of the kids racing on scooters from Pier A to C. We’re always looking for fun events to attend locally with some of our favorites being Silly on Sixth shows, Little Hoboken-sponsored events, HCA fundraisers and birthday parties! We’re always up for a fieldtrip to the Pilsnerhaus for their delicious pretzels and brats. Breakfast at La Isla is never a miss and we can’t get enough of the phenomenal pizza made by Dozzino. We love good food! When we’re not playing hard, we’re working hard! We own a custom cake and dessert catering business, called Sugarsuckle. Last year, we began hosting pop-up workshops throughout town to share our craft and spread the fun. In addition to our workshops, we love partnering with other businesses and organizations to bring some fun family events to Hoboken. We love the small-town feel of Hoboken and we’ve made many wonderful friendships through our association with daycares, schools, church, and business endeavors. Please say ‘hello’ if you ever see us around. for advertising information email: ladysavanthoboken@gmail.com //

elissa has been in the Hoboken area for over 19 years. Tim joined her here in 2011 and their son, Kane joined the party in November of 2014. Clearly, as a lover of all things Hoboken, it was only natural that Melissa started a local business with her partner, Cassie. There was a major need for a local mommy platform where moms could go for advice from ACTUAL EXPERTS, where they could have a judgement free place to be real moms and not feel guilty about it, where they could find fun events to attend with and without their kids and where they could learn all about the amazing local businesses here in town both old and new. Little Hoboken was born and along with it came the Little Hoboken Hook-Up discount card and other fun items such as branded totes, coffee mugs, water bottles, and more! Tim also shares his love for Hoboken by working as a Business Development Manager at Malka Media which is located in the historic Chambord Building downtown. Melissa and Tim can often be found dining at one of their favorite spots like The Cuban, having cocktails at Bin 14 (their first date!) or Stingray Lounge, shopping the local stores (using their LH Hook-up Cards, of course!), or taking their dog, Chaos, to one of the local dog parks! he Mamroud Family has expanded since they first established themselves in Hoboken a few years ago. Mara and Amit met randomly at a party in 2012, and soon enough, this Long Island girl moved to the other side of the river to her own surprise. Fast forward almost five years, and they are roaming the streets now pushing a stroller, exploring music classes and family happy hours with their 6 month old son, Jonah. Amit works for the state of New Jersey in the department of labor, and Mara is a speech- language pathologist who has become a familiar face to many of Hoboken's families. She works in a school, and also has developed a thriving private practice here and in the surrounding towns. She works in clients homes, daycares and schools, and also holds parent workshops on language development in various kid-friendly spaces. They hope to continue to take advantage of all that Hoboken has to offer, especially with a little one in tow!

or over 15 years, Tim and Cara Hilton have been settling into the vibrant community of Hoboken. Hoboken was the perfect location to call home while the couple built their careers. Tim could not beat the fast commute to the city, which allowed him to balance home and work life. Cara was completing her doctorate in psychology, while Tim was paving the way in the financial industry. Never intending on raising a family in the urban jungle, life unfolded! They embraced city living and before they knew it, they were settled into a close-knit village

{18}

of friends, strongly weaved into to their school community, and enjoying the host of family activities that Hoboken has to offer! Tim is an investment advisor/financial planner for Ameriprise Financial, Inc. His passion is guiding families, individuals, and businesses toward a healthy financial lifestyle and to ensure a secure future. It’s amazing how fast time flies and before you know it, it is time to plan for college or retirement! Outside of work, Tim enjoys kicking the ball around in a adult soccer

league at Frank Sinatra soccer field (you can’t beat the waterfront views!), playing tennis, riding his bike around town with his family (the new bike lanes in town have been a real asset to the town!), and coaching youth sports such as soccer and baseball in the Hoboken Recreation Program, where his son’s actively participate. He’s an avid golfer and one of the organizers of the annual Swing Fore the Schools program that benefits several of the local schools in town, Mustard Seed, Stevens, HOLA, Elysian Charter, and All Saints Episcopal Schools. Cara took a long pause as a stay-at-homemom for many years while raising her two boys, Baxter, (8 years old) and Cabot (5 years old). Living in Hoboken eased the parenting stressors of raising young children —the tight community of families, the outpour of activities for all ages (birth and up!), and the short walk to almost anything, really appealed to their lifestyle. On any given day in the early years, you could find them at Urban Arts creating toddler masterpieces, rocking out at a local Music Together class, meeting up with other new moms at the local coffee spots sipping a latte at Bwe, enjoying a delicious pastry at Choc-o-Pain, or playing at one of the plethora of parks in town... Elysian Park being one of their favorites and Pier C on the waterfront being a close second! Now that the boys are older, Cara has recently been doing consulting work for a private practice that works closely with the Hoboken Charter School and other local schools. Baxter and Cabot have attended the Mustard Seed School in Hoboken since preschool. Can’t beat the school’s location, which is right near Sweet and just across the street from Church Square Park, where they boys can often be found digging in the dirt, playing out their imagination with

friends, and expending tons of energy after devouring a cupcake! Baxter is an avid soccer player on the Hoboken City Futball Club’s travel soccer team (sponsored by the Red Bulls!) and Cabot recently joined the Diamond Gym in town, where he counts the days until the next class! The family attends Saints Peter and Paul Church, where Cara is a volunteer in the Faith Formation program and Baxter sings in the children’s choir. Furthermore, the children are both members of the Hoboken Children’s Theatre at Mile Square Theatre. At any given time, you might catch them prancing down Washington Street singing the most recent tunes for their upcoming performance of The Suessical! The Hilton gang regularly catch many adult and ‘family friendly’ performances at the local theater, which truly captures the quality of Broadway with brilliant actors and creative scripts and the best part is that you don’t have to cross the river! You may spot the Hilton gang at one of their favorite ‘family friendly’ hot spots in town grabbing an eclectic pie at Dozzino’s artisanal pizzeria, sampling some authentic brew at the Pilsener Haus & Biergarten, catching a game and some good-ole southern barbecue at the House of Cue, or savoring the delicious Cuban bites at La Isla! It’s refreshing to be able to grab a family brunch at local joints that welcome children, such as Turning Point and Mikey Squared and they are a regular at the Elysian Cafe on Tuesday nights when kids eat for free! In their free time, the family loves to hike (Palisades Interstate Park is just around the corner!), ski, and spend time in nature, which all are easily accessible from town, even with young children. It sure does take a village to raise a family! Thankfully, the mile square town of Hoboken has been a special gift to the Hilton gang and a family friendly community to call home.

By Tasha Blasi How many times have you heard that your baby making is unsuccessful because you’re too stressed? Before I knew I had to do In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), an acupuncturist looked at my tongue, told me that I ate my food too fast, and if I wanted to get pregnant my only hope was to take three months off work. That news stressed me out. Of course I was stressed. I was nine months into “heavy charting.” Meaning I was charting daily temperature, daily ovulation tests, the daily texture of my vaginal discharge (new meaning to egg whites), the daily softness of my cervix, and times for sex. My stressed turned into fear and anxiety when I learned I had to do IVF, or as I first called it, “Are you Kidding Me Right Now?!” That was my response:

Are you having heart palpitations yet? Well, don’t because that could ruin your chances of getting pregnant! My name is Tasha Blasi, and I’m the founder of the Fertilities Unite Project (FU Project). I launched this company that educates, empowers, and supports women going through fertility treatments. The FU Project was designed with one goal: help women go through fertility treatments smarter, easier, and cheaper than I did. I ended up going through ten rounds of IVF to have my two children, who are now 7 and 2. If I knew then what I knew now, I wouldn’t have needed ten rounds to be successful.

- L ack of control over whether or not my body would respond

The common theme for all of my clients is anxiety. This issue, however, is rarely addressed during the fertility journey. Women are just expected to figure it out and cope. Or see a therapist. So in my peer-topeer support and guidance, I focus on my Anti-Anxiety Self Soothers (A.A.S.S.).

- T he box of drugs that arrived at my house that I had to inject into my body, one shot at a time

For example, Lesson #3 of my online course, Patient-to-Patient Guide to IVF, covers my A.A.S.S. These are all of the ways that you

can naturally, quickly, and effectively calm your mind and body.

also how people describe meth addictions by the way.

There are immediate fixes for when you have mone-rage (like roid-rage but with hormones), and long-term strategies to balance and control your hormonal health which improves the functions of your reproductive system.

#3 Anything Will Ferrel was in (these days it would be Melissa McCarthy).

An example of an immediate fix is The Hit List. It’s a list of things and experiences that your partner can hand you to lift you out of your funk, anxiety, or mone-rage when you feel it approaching. Rule #1: You have to make up this list. Do not leave it up to your partner. He/she will fail and then you will be even more angry that after all of these year, he/she doesn’t listen to you!!! Rule #2: If your partner gives you something on this list because he/she feels like you are getting angry, you cannot get angry because they think you are angry. Here are some things that were on my hit list.

For long term balance and maintenance, one of the many things I recommend is for women to finally take the time to learn about the various ways to meditate. Don’t roll your eyes. Meditation has been proven to control hormones needed for optimal reproductive functions. There are many online sources, such as the Headspace app, which are free and can easily get your started. The above was just a peak, but for a full view of my A.A.S.S. (are the innuendos getting old yet?), check out my website www. tashablasi.com. And set up a time for us to chat. I offer free fertility consultations and customized strategies. So, if someone tells you that you’re not getting pregnant because you need to relax, just say, “FU.” The real FU. Then join me in the FU Project, and we’ll get this done!
