RAVEN McLAURIN

Welcome to the Inaugural Edition of TOP SENIORS Magazine! The Charlotte Post Publishing Company, publishers of the Charlotte Post and the Triangle Tribune newspapers, and the Charlotte Post Foundation are exceptionally proud to have produced the inaugural 2017 Wake County Top Senior magazine. The Wake County publication is an expansion of a project started 42 years ago from very humble beginnings. In 1975 a company reporter, James Cuthbertson, asked publisher Bill Johnson if he would allow him to recognize, in the paper, high performing African American seniors in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System. Mr. Cuthbertson’s rationale was, since the 1970 desegregation of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, African Americans students were no longer being recognized for their accomplishments. The publication has grown from a few pages in the newspaper, to a black & white newsprint publication, to now a full color glossy magazine. The publication’s expansion to Wake County opens a new market for recognizing and exposing the high achievements of African American seniors. I have been deeply impressed with the caliber of students being recognized. It bodes well for our future.

Gerald and Linda Johnson

The production of the Top Senior publication requires the work and assistance of a team of people. I would like to thank the following individuals for helping make this possible: Linda Bailey Johnson, Project Coordinator, The Triangle Tribune Bonitta Best, Features Editor, The Triangle Tribune Carrie Harris, Production Manager, A Type of Image Graphic Design + Illustration Evelyn Howell, Reporter Daniel Thompson, Photo Shoot Photographer, Millennial Films Angela D. Moore, Photo Shoot Image Consultant, Angela Moore, Fashion & Image Consultant Adra Campbell, Photo Shoot Makeup Artist, B. Enhanced Beauty and Image Consulting Services Katina Bryson, Photo Shoot Clothier, Co-owner, Azani Coutour Many thanks to the NC Museum of Art’s Katie Marlow, Director of Marketing, and Harriet Hoover, Coordinator of Teen and College Programs, for allowing us to shoot on location. A special thank you to Wake County Public School System’s Dr. Marvin Connelly, Chief of Staff and Strategic Planning; Crystal Reardon, WCPSS Director of Counseling, and the entire WCPSS staff for the help they provided. In addition, we owe a great deal of thanks to Mathias Bishop who, behind the scenes, facilitated putting us in front of the right people, places and things to help make this a successful endeavor. And last but not least, the panel of judges–Catherine Edmonds, Pryce Baldwin, Ann Hooker and Linda Quarles, who took time out of their busy schedules to review the senior applications and determined the two top seniors. Passion, hard work, keys to success By Evelyn Howell Correspondent

THE TRIANGLE TRIBUNE’S 2017 TOP SENIOR

SYDNEY DANIELLE FLORYANZIA APEX HIGH SCHOOL

APEX – People with passion can make the impossible happen. Apex High School senior Sydney Floryanzia believes it. “Don’t passively accept failure. Work as hard as you can,” she said. “Try to work toward a goal. Identify and follow your passion, especially if that passion can somehow help others. That will be what pushes you to work harder.” Floryanzia is The Triangle Tribune’s Top Senior. She is an honor student who has maintained a 4.93 grade point average, an AP Scholar Award with Distinction winner, and the National Center for Women and Information Technology Aspirations in Computing’s 2015 and 2016 North Carolina winner. “It’s an honor and it means a lot,” she said. “I have sacrificed a lot toward my education in high school and in using that education to help others. So to even be recognized for all of my efforts is an honor — very humbling and very blessed.” Floryanzia is drawn to science and mathematics. In fact, she likes a challenge of converting verbal descriptions of the world into mathematical expressions. “Calculus is really fun. It actually has a real life application. It forces you to combine all the math you’ve learned, in all your years in high school, which you thought was useless at the time, but now it has a purpose,” she continued. After graduating, Floryanzia plans to pursue a degree in chemical engineering, with a focus on research and development, at North Carolina State University, which has the fourth largest College of Engineering in the nation. In a field still dominated by white men, Floryanzia depicts herself tackling research and developing techniques in a lab in hopes of finding ways to improve drug delivery methods. Her dad is a software engineer, but she would be the first in her family to earn a Ph.D. Georgia Tech, Ohio State and Howard universities also accepted her, but she chose NCSU because the school of engineering is the right fit for her academically and will better suit her future goals. Thanks to encouragement from her mom and several outstanding mentors and teachers in STEM camp programs, Floryanzia is well on a path to being among the next generation of women scientists. In her spare time, extracurricular activities are an outlet Floryanzia uses to help her balance academics. She is proud of her work in a Chevron sponsored commercial, Sydney, STEM DOERS, to get girls interested in STEM programs. But one of her favorites is The Society of Women Engineers. She is its founder and president at Apex High. “I get to expose girls to engineering in ways that they might not have ordinarily have seen it.”

Balancing friendships and academics By Evelyn Howell Correspondent RALEIGH – Wakefield High School’s Raven McLaurin is The Tribune’s Top Senior runner-up. An honor student with a 4.8 grade point average, McLaurin strikes a balance between her coursework and social life. “It’s important to take AP courses if you are looking for a high GPA, but it’s also important to take classes so that you can just breathe, so you’re not constantly going at a high level and overdoing it,” she said. “And you should not ever be without an agenda, especially if you join clubs. I tend to overload myself sometimes. You need an agenda or else you may forget something.” A love and excitement for the outdoors is one of the driving forces behind McLaurin’s decision to become an environmental engineer. “My focus will be making solar energy and wind energy affordable for families,” she said. “I have always had a connection with the environment. Environmental issues are being swept under the table, so I want to seek and find ways to make energy resources more energy efficient, affordable and clean for all families. If you have more researchers in the field, it can make a difference.” McLaurin hasn’t decided which college she will attend. However, she has been accepted at North Carolina State, UNC-Chapel Hill and East Carolina. All have engineering programs. Through Environmental Protection Agency programs, McLaurin found her voice in expressing what she knows about science. “I’ve gotten a lot better with the help of the Shaw University and U.S. Environmental Protections Agency Research Apprenticeship programs, and I’ve gotten a lot better about talking about things that I know with other people,” she said. Of all the activities she is involved, McLaurin said she enjoys cheering with special needs kids most. McLaurin said she saw a need to include girls with special needs so she, along with classmates Bailey Rice and Sarah Blackwood, organized Cheer Excel. McLaurin is captain of Wakefield’s varsity cheerleading team, varsity lacrosse and a member in a host of honor clubs. She is mindful to make room and pencil in time for friends. “Friendships are so incredibly important,” McLaurin said. “Friends keep you grounded; keep you out of your own mind and out of your own way. They force you to think about other people and take an interest in things outside of your life and help you open windows to things that you probably would never have done.”

A fun Q & A with The Triangle Tribune’s 2017 Top Senior HIGH SCHOOL: APEX HIGH SCHOOL FINAL GPA: 4.93 COLLEGE ATTENDING: NC STATE UNIVERSITY CAREER CHOICE: CHEMICAL ENGINEERING IF YOU COULD PICK ONE THING ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL TO SHARE WITH AN INCOMING FRESHMAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

“Try to work towards a goal because working hard in high school is important. Identify and follow your passion, especially if that passion can somehow help others—that will be what pushes you to work harder.” HOW DO YOU OVERCOME CHALLENGES?

“I wrote in my essay about me and robotics, about not knowing anything--then being the only girl on top of that. I went home and I would sit in front of the computer and I looked up codes and I rented a book to teach myself how to code and what that meant— trying to glean as much as I could. And I went to every single meeting, even the optional ones. I did everything possible. That experience prompted me to create the Society of Women Engineers. I didn’t want anyone to have a similar experience in robotics and get turned off from STEM altogether.” WHAT MOTIVATES YOU?

“I’m really motivated in trying to accomplish something XLEX GER LIPT SXLIVW WTIGM½GEPP] [MXL RIYVSPSKMGEP degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, to give them hope and increase their quality of life.” WHAT WILL YOU MISS MOST ABOUT APEX HIGH SCHOOL?

“I think the family I’ve made there, the faculty and students, being able to walk down the hallways and speaking to everybody and asking them how they are doing, and having meaningful conversations with everybody. I‘m going to have to make those connections all over again, but that’s cool.” FAVORITE BOOK?

“To answer that question I have to say the Bible.” FAVORITE ARTIST?

“Alicia Keys, Esperanza Spaulding and Andy Mineo. I love them. Alicia Keys stands for empowering women and she’s done a lot of breaking down barriers in the music industry, as a black female, and she writes her own songs.”

We

FAVORITE CLASS?

“Calculus.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR?

“I don’t have a favorite color. When I was a little girl I didn’t want to choose a color because I didn’t want the other colors to feel sad. But if I had to choose one, maybe yellow because it’s happy.”

What an inclusive society means to me

Top Senior Essay By Sydney Danielle Floryanzia

When I think of an inclusive society, it is one where every person has a voice, regardless of his or her background. It is a society where diversity is appreciated whether difference in ethnicities, thought, or gender. I am an African American female and my family is made up of many different cultures as well. To many, I seem ethnically ambiguous, and XLIVIJSVI YREFPI XS TIVJIGXP] ½X MRXS SRI GYPXYVI &IGEYWI SJ Q] diverse heritage, I have a deep appreciation for and desire to learn about other cultures; our similarities, our differences, and the ways our different experiences and perspectives can combine to form beautiful new ideas. Instead of focusing on trying to be like everyone else, people would spend time cultivating their own, unique ideas that could change the world.
