Brenham gears up for Wayfinding program BY ARTHUR HAHN Managing Editor

By the end of summer, travelers traversing the roads in and around Brenham will be seeing directional signage — called Wayfinding — showing them how to get to places of interest like downtown Brenham, the Visitor Center, museums and city parks. “A Wayfinding signage program was called for in the Downtown Master Plan,” said Wende Ragonis, the city of Brenham’s director of Community Services. “And Main Street and our volunteers are excited to see this program coming to fruition.” Two years ago, Main Street Planning Committee members Melinda Faubion, Charlie Pyle, Page Michel, Mary Tilley, Elizabeth Price and Tommy Upchurch, along with Main Street Manager Jennifer Eckermann, worked to select a design firm with experience and creativity to design a whole program of signage that would not only give directions to important destinations, but also have a look that reflects the community in some way. “The committee chose fd2s, a design firm in Austin, that had a tremendous amount of experience designing wayfinding signage for other cities like Bastrop and Wichita Falls,” said Ragonis. Eckermann said that fd2s led several meetings, early in the planning stages, where they shared local design elements they thought stood out to them as visitors to Brenham.

“They showed the group photos of downtown buildings,” Eckermann said, “metal or iron designs used in local signage, the Maypole at Fireman’s Park, and different forms of wildflowers, whether on signage, murals or in the fields.” fd2s then took comments from attendees and created a preliminary design for the wayfinding signage that the committee reviewed and tweaked as details were worked out. Funding for the design was split between the city of Brenham and funds raised by community volunteers through Main Street Brenham events. What is being considered as Phase I of the signage program is being funded by Hotel Occupancy Tax revenue. Phase 2, which might include entrance signage into the community, will be considered at a later date. Ragonis said that the process of getting to the actual awarding of the Phase 1 project to a specific bidder for construction and installation of the signs, was a long and winding path. “Most of the signage will be installed along TxDOT right of way,” she said, “and getting the project reviewed, mak-

ing changes and getting final approval from the state, was a pretty drawn out process. “There are numerous guidelines to follow,” she added, “from the size and color of individual letters to the size and types of materials allowed, and we found that not all TxDOT District Offices interpret the guidelines the same. “We found, for instance, that the Austin District Office that oversees Bastrop may look at things differently than the Bryan office does that oversees Brenham,” she added. The good news is that all the details were finally agreed to, and the goal of the city of Brenham is to have the Wayfinding signage installed before Sept. 30. Eckermann says that — like in so many things — the wait will be worth it in the end. “It’s like childbirth,” she said with a laugh. “As miserable and endless as the prep time can be, you tend to forget about that once the process comes to completion!” ——— arthur@brenhambanner.com

Whether you are cycling on a bicycle, ripping up the trails on a mountain bike, or cruising down the country roads on a Harley, Brenham/Washington County has very scenic rides steeped in the history of the Native Americans, early Texas heroes and settlers staking claim in a new land. According to some cyclists, the hills of Chappell Hill can squeeze your training time due to the difficulty levels. A favorite run for motorcyclists is FM 390, otherwise known as La Bahia Trail, a trail which was carved by Native Americans and connects north Texas to San Antonio and Goliad. County holds rich athletic history

B

renham is known for its baseball and rightfully so. The Cubs are seven-time state champions — the last title coming in 2010. But football made its own state appearance in 2013, proving the school district offers more than just a premier baseball program. The football team has made three total appearances at state (2013, 2009 and 2002). Baseball won titles in 1970, ‘75, ‘76, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88 and 2010. Enjoy yourself on, off land at Lake Somerville Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. It is northwest of Brenham in Lee and Burleson counties. Birch Creek is 2,365 acres in Burleson County on the north shore, and Nails Creek consists of 3,155 acres in Lee County on the south shore near the west end of the reservoir. The two units are connected by a 13-mile trailway system. The Somerville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 3,180 acres with the Yegua Creek Compartment in southwest Burleson County and the Nails Creek Compartment in northeast Lee County. The Somerville Reservoir was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Work was started in June 1962, and deliberate impoundment of water was begun in January of 1967. The dam is located on Yegua Creek, 20 miles upstream from its confluence with the Brazos River, and about two miles south of Somerville. Somerville Reservoir covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. Its main purposes are flood control, municipal water supply and recreation. The state park complex was leased from the federal government in 1969 and opened in 1970.

Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Somerville WMA under a license agreement and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flag Pond is a 350-acre impoundment in the Yegua Creek watershed; it is located within the Lake Somerville State Park along the Somerville Trailway. The pond is a nat-

ural depression which has served as wetland habitat for waterfowl wintering (mid-October to mid-February) in the Lake Somerville vicinity. Flag Pond was originally developed by a private hunting club in 1926. Enjoy, but do not disturb historical places. If you find an artifact, leave it in place and let park staff know.

County has designated areas for public hunting Deer season is drawing closer with dove season already underway, and hunters are purchasing all the gear they need for the season. For just $48 a hunter can purchase a public hunting permit which allows them to hunt on designated public hunting grounds across the state. There are three such public hunting grounds in Washington County, one southwest of Chappell Hill and two in Carmine. “Hunters will receive a map in the mail that shows them all the land by county,” game warden Jonny Heaton said. “The book will also show them what they can hunt on the land.” Some areas have dove and water fowl hunting, some have big game such as deer and some lands have all three designations. Private land owners lease land to the state for public hunts, and this gives hunters who can’t afford the hunt outfitting fees to have access to public hunting lands. “Hunters have to respect the landowner,” Heaton said.

Fishing records at Lake Somerville: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Largemouth bass — caught by Steven Vela, March 4, 2009;13.6 pounds and 25.25 inches. Carp — caught by Wayne Vinton, Aug. 20, 2009; 10.7 pounds and 28.63 inches. Blue catfish — caught by Randall Bryant, Feb. 14, 2009; 83 pounds and 50 inches. Channel catfish — caught by Don Boyce, April 30, 2008; 15.6 pounds and 32.25 inches. Flathead catfish — caught by Robert Dean, April 9, 2008; 42.8 pounds and 48.5 inches. Black crappie — caught by Mark Sullivant, March 11, 2009; 2.36 pounds and 14.5 inches. White crappie — caught by Sullivant, April 4, 1996; 2.63 pounds and 15.5 inches.

“Mainly the property is walk-in, they can’t drive all over the land and they have to clean up after themselves.” The $48 fee goes back into the program to lease more land for public hunts, and a percentage of purchased supplies and materials is used to make the land more habitable for animals and research programs which help the wildlife. “Hunting controls the number of animals based on how well the land can care for that species,” Heaton said. “If the animal population is too high then disease will increase and wipe out more animals than hunting would. “Hunting keeps the diseases

down and protects the quality of the animals reproducing.” Hunters benefit the economy in other ways as well, Heaton said. They stay in hotels, dine in restaurants and spend money in local shops and stores. Some game requires a special license, for instance dove hunters need a migratory stamp on their permit, duck and geese require a water foul stamp and a big game stamp is needed for deer hunting. Dove hunters can only use shot guns which hold no more than three shells, they can hunt from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset, and can bag 15 doves per day, Heaton said.

General deer season begins Nov. 6 and ends Jan. 2 and hunting with muzzle loaded guns starts Jan. 3 and ends Jan. 16. Legal bucks need a 13 inch or greater inside spread if the antlers are forked, but if one or both of the buck’s antlers are unbranched then they are legal no matter the spread, Heaton said. The bag limit is four deer, two bucks and two doe. “The unbranched bucks are considered inferior, and we want to improve the quality of the bucks, so hunters will take these out of the breeding pool,” Heaton said. “We have the spread limits to give the bucks a chance to mature and reproduce.”

Geocaching in the ‘Birthplace of Texas’ The Washington County Chamber of Commerce have hidden various caches across the county, in hopes of getting more people to visit the historic sites and fun locations in the area. Unlike a normal scavenger hunt, these geocaches are hidden by the locations in spaces outside as a part of the chamber’s Birthplace of Texas GeoTour. The tour has 28 locations, including a three-part view of the historic homes of Washington County. Of the 28 caches, 22 are new for the geotour. The concept of a geotour isn’t new, Website and Social Media Manager Jenny Mills said, but the Birth of Texas GeoTour is the first in the state, with other towns in the state discussing ones for their areas in the near future. If a geocacher is among the first 250 to collect 25 total points — either by fi nding the geocaches, or by eating, shopping, and staying in Washington County — a cacher can receive a collectible geocoin, which

can be placed in any cache that will hold it and can be tracked online. Of the 250 coins, Mills said that 150 or so have been claimed by people who have completed the tour. Most have come from the state of Texas, but Mills said that there have been people who have visited from outof-state, like Colorado and Georgia, and out-of-country, like the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. While she said that a majority of the in-state cachers haven’t stayed multiple days in Washington County, the comments have been positive and even if someone stays only throughout the day, it means multiple people are seeing Washington County attractions and hopefully will return. To find out more about the Birthplace of Texas GeoTour, visit www.geocaching.com.

Historic Independence Baptist Church, organized in 1839, third oldest Baptist church in Texas. Present building dating to pre-Civil-War days.

Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot The Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot for schools, churches and families. The Independence Baptist Church was begun in August 1839 and is the oldest continuously serving Baptist church in Texas. Since it began, the church has never ceased to meet. The old adobe church burned in the spring of 1872 and this building was built on top of the old foundation in the fall of 1872. Independence Baptist Church was the church of Sam Houston. In 1854, President Sam Houston was baptized in the Independence Baptist Church. His wife, Margaret Moffette Lea, eight children, and mother-in-law were also members of this church. Mrs. Houston and her mother Mrs. Nancy Lea are buried across the street “Within sound of the bell.” In 1845, the town of Independence was the wealthiest community in Texas and won the bid for a Texas university. It was named after one of its founders, R.E.B. Baylor. Baylor University opened its doors in 1846 with a total of 24 students, both male and female. (Later the women were separated into an independent institution, known as Baylor Women’s College.) The community has retained several significant historic structures and sites from its 19th-century peak. Its attractions include the Texas Baptist Historical Center; the home of Judge J.P. Coles, one of the Old Three Hundred of the Austin Colony; Baylor College Park; Old Independence Cemetery, a state historic site;, and Houston-Lea Family Cemetery. The Margaret Houston House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Church Continued from page 25 Independence Baptist Church was instrumental in founding Baylor and Mary-Hardin Baylor colleges. A number of the early President’s of Baylor were also pastors of IBC. Dr. Henry Graves was a pastor of Independence Baptist Church and the first president of Baylor. Dr. George Baines (great-grandfather of President Lyndon Baines Johnson) served as a pastor of Independence Baptist Church as did many other notable Texas Baptist pastors. While the church has built a new facility across the street from the Historic Church, the church still holds services in the old sanctuary for Christmas Eve Candlelight services, Elder Stateman’s Day, weddings, and

other special occasions. Independence Baptist Church continues to minister to the community and is a growing, healthy church. Although the congregation meets at the new facility across the street on most Sundays, they still meet at the historic church for special services. When the Santa Fe Railroad wanted to establish a line through town, the city leaders refused to grant it a right-of-way. By the 1880s, most railroads bypassed the town, taking trade with them. As students found it difficult to get transportation to Independence, Baylor University officials decided in 1885 to move it to a more accessible location, Waco. The women’s college was moved to Belton, where it be-

came known as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The museum has over 10,000 visitors a year to the Historic Church, museum, Baylor Park, and the Houston cemetery Bring your church group, school group, or family to visit Texas’ oldest continuously serving Baptist church. The present church dates to 1872. The pulpit furniture dates to 1852. Sam Houston was baptized here and carved his and his wife’s initials in their family pew. Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor began here. This church has been called the mother church of Texas Baptist because of its significance to Texas Baptist history. The museum remains free thanks to the

generous support of Texas Baptists. The grounds of the church are filled with some of the oldest oak trees to be found in Texas. Inside you will fi nd the beauty of soft light streaming in from the stained glass windows imported from Belgium in 1872, or glowing from the chandelier which was imported from Germany in 1874. The old chapel, which is now part of the museum, has recently undergone an extensive renovation, including the addition of a new air conditioning system. Come visit during the operating hours of the museum, or contact the director and schedule a tour of the church and the grounds after hours.

TOUBIN PARK

208 S PARK STREET | BRENHAM Beneath Brenham streets is a State Archeological Landmark, a large system of historic cisterns. The cisterns were built in the late 1800’s to store rainwater for public fire fighting. Private cisterns were also abundant throughout early Washington County, used for bathing, drinking and cooking. Enjoy the Wild West story of why these cisterns were built. It’s a tale of an early railroad, a rough Boom Town, and colorful characters who shaped Washington County’s history. Self-guided tours through this historic Downtown Brenham pocket park can be enjoyed any time of the day.

Join us at First Baptist Church ~ Chappell Hill and become a part of our family.

Let us experience HOME together.

HOW DOES FAITH GROW

The promise of faith comes to us as a gift; mystery really, in which God’s great love for us is revealed through Jesus. But how does faith grow? We believe that Holy Scripture, guided by our faith tradition, takes us on a journey which always leads to God’s love for us and all people. At Christ Lutheran Church, Day School and Foundation, our mission is to invite all people of any age to join us on that journey.

The five-minute movies introduce guests to important Brenham forefathers and the German heritage of our county – including Maifest. New interactive activities for children are popular. Admission to the Museum gallery is $3 for adults and $1 for children. (NOTE: The museum is currently closed for renovations.) Toubin Park – Opened in 2011, the park is part of Step into the Past for its original cistern built around 1878. Museums Continued from page 46 Burton Depot – From 1870 to the early 1950s the depot was the center of town, where locals and visitors gathered. Chappell Hill Museum – The Museum and Gift Shop are housed in the last public school building of the Chappell Hill ISD. The red brick structure is located on the site of the Chappell Hill Female College. Built in 1927, it served as only one of the schools in the area until 1965. The completely redesigned museum tells the intriguing story of a town once seemingly destined for greatness, but diminished by the ill fortunes of fate and history. Open Wednesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sunday 1-4 p.m. Old Rock Store – Constructed in 1869 using native sandstone and cedar, was originally built for use as a general store. Over the years it has served as as a feed store, a butcher shop and, at one time, housed the Chappell Hill Post Office. Providence Baptist Church – Built approximately two and a half miles northwest of Chappell Hill, this building was destroyed by a violent storm in 1866. Part of the congregation continued to meet in the Presbyterian Church in Chappell Hill until the present building was completed in 1873. Washington on the Brazos – Three sites in one location, all representing Texas’ beginnings. The Declaration of Independence from Mexico was signed here, giving this state historic site the name “The Birthplace of Texas.” Enjoy walking trails, Independence Hall, a beautiful Visitor Center and gift shop, Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Living History Farm.
