HE LAKE Travis Firefighters Association and Lake Travis Fire Rescue are proud to present the 2017/2018 Firefighter Calendar. The cover photo was inspired by a mission—not of vanity but of charity! It was one of many shots taken by photographer Rachel Biagini to promote the 18-month calendar that begins with the month of July 2017 and runs through December 2018. These Lake Travis First Responders have a big goal in mind…a goal they can only achieve with community support. The proceeds earned from the sale of the calendars benefit B.I.G. Love Cancer Care Services and Battle for the Cure Foundation. Both of these organizations provide love and support to kids battling cancer throughout Central Texas. So, as Lieutenant Wood notes, “The real focus of the calendar this year is on these real heroes, the boys and girls who have never lost the joy and the hope that they spread to all of us. We will feature some of the lil’ kids with big muscles that we are supporting and will tell a little bit about who they are throughout the calendar. We hope to have some amazing fundraising events as well, where many firefighters will autograph calendars. Events will range from bathing suits and boats to black tie and Uber.” “We could not be more excited and could not have dreamed of a better community to launch this year’s calendar. Our hope, of course, is to raise money but, more importantly, we hope this project can help these great charities bring some incredibly brave kids a little joy.” LTFR is a professional fire department of approximately 100 employees that services over 200 square miles from the Hamilton Pool area up to the 620/2222 corridor and all communities in between. Please visit Facebook.com/LTfirefighters for presale and sponsorship info. Thank you for your support in helping us make this project great.

HE STARS were aligned as they should be for “Under a Texas Sky,” the phenomenal Garden Party held each year by the Umlauf Sculpture Garden and Museum. The threat of a violent spring storm is always a possibility in Austin, but guests enjoyed flawless garden-party weather on April 27th. In this historic garden, the sculptures of Charles Umlauf shared their showroom with the booths of 26 featured restaurants. Restaurant Chair Lynnsie Jammal assembled a treasury of Austin’s favorites. It was, as the program noted, truly a celebration of food, wine and art, framed by nature. Natalie and Dave Sideserf, owners of Sideserf Cake Studio, are sculptors in their own right. However, they sculpt not in clay, marble or bronze but in cake dough and icing. They created a magnificent blue heron cake, in honor of the blue herons that inhabit Austin’s waterways, especially for the garden party. They are the owners of Sideserf Cake Studio and hosts of Food Networks ‘Texas Cake House’. The Nash Hernandez Orchestra set the mood with a selection of classic tunes, creating yet another pleasure to add to the

VERY YEAR the Lake Travis Education Foundation embarks on the massive project of planning the annual gala, the major fundraiser that supports the students, faculty and staff of the Lake Travis Independent School District. The “Illumination Gala,” presented by Lexus of Lakeway and held at the Hilton Hotel in Downtown Austin, not only met the fundraising goal of $365,000 but exceeded all expectations by raising an estimated $500,000. Since 1985, the Lake Travis Education Foundation has provided more than $3.75 million dollars in grants, funding extra programs and projects at Lake Travis ISD. With our school district continuing its rapid growth and the state legislature continuing to move tax dollars from Lake Travis ISD to other districts in the state, the need for extra funding that cannot be sequestered by the state is more important than ever. Supporters of the Lake Travis Education Foundation often refer to this annual gala as “mom prom,” and the ladies and gentlemen looked elegant, reveling in the fête, as they do each year. Terra Vista Strings set the tone for the cocktail hour and

Loans up to 85% of a primary home’s value are available on a purchase or refinance with no cash back. Subject to property type, a minimum credit score of 680 and a minimum of 18 months of reserves (i.e., you must have at least enough money in reserve in your bank account to make 18 monthly mortgage payments (principal, interest, taxes and insurance) after your loan closes) for loan amounts up to $1 million. 2 This is assuming a purchase transaction, 450 day lock, 85 LTV, 740 FICO, single family, owner occupied, closest to zero points, rates change daily. For the Adjustable-Rate Mortgage (ARM) product, interest is fixed for a set period of time, and adjusts periodically thereafter. At the end of the fixed-rate period, the interest and payments may increase. The APR may increase after the loan consummation. Interest-Only Mortgage: Depending upon your credit profile, interest-only loans are available and provide for the payment of interest only for a set period of time, and payments of principal and interest thereafter for the remainder of the loan term. While making interest-only payments, principal is not reduced. At the end of this period, your monthly payment will increase, possibly substantially, because you will be required to pay down the outstanding principal plus any remaining interest. Always consider paying more than the minimum payment to pay down the principal. All home lending products are subject to credit and property approval. Rates, program terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. Not all products are available in all states or for all amounts. Other restrictions and limitations apply. Illusionist, Robert Tary, who also served as the Emcee, provided entertainment. Following a delectable dinner, Heath Hale orchestrated the live auction, and he and his posse of Cowboy Auctioneers outdid themselves, raising a significant amount of money from generous guests for the Lake Travis Education Foundation. HE MISSION of the Lake Travis Education Foundation is to provide fiscal resources to enhance the educational experience for the students of the Lake Travis Independent School District. The 2017 Butterfly Brunch was catered by Canyon Grille and held at the Pavilion at the Rough Hollow Yacht Club. LTEF earned 20% back on its food purchase, since it took advantage of incentives provided by Canyon Grille’s Charity Monday Program. As Chair Karen Mechura noted, “The Butterfly Brunch was the vision of Lexus four years ago when they joined in partnership with LTEF. The Brunch has become a highly anticipated event and sold out this year in just three weeks. We are thrilled to have Lexus again as our presenting partner.” Other sponsors included Tiffany & Co., Nordstrom, Bombshell Beauty, Flowers by Nancy, Fresh Dermatology, Thomson & Horton, and Primrose Schools. Chair Karen Mechura worked with Emcee Jen Young, of Forever Styled, to create a spectacular runway show featuring the latest styles from Adorn, The Boutique on Stonelake-Lakeway, Oh Yeah!, fab’rik, Lure by Y&F, Sage Threads & Co., Gatsby’s, Nordstrom and Zosia Candela. The Butterfly Brunch raised more than $17,000, nearly doubling last year’s revenues. Chair Karen Mechura said, “We are lucky in Lake Travis ISD to get a private school education at a public-school price. It takes businesses, the District, the community, and the Foundation working in concert to keep this high standard.”

NE IN EVERY 3,500 boys is diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy by the age of five. By the age of 12, most of these young boys lose the ability to walk. By their mid20’s, most have lost their life to this tragic disease. This devastating muscle disease causes those affected to lose not only the ability to walk but also to feed themselves, breath on their own and ultimately leads to heart failure. However, through innovative pharmacological and gene-based therapies, there is hope for a cure in the future. CureDuchenne is a national nonprofit organization, co-founded in 2003 by Debra Miler with her husband, Paul, when their only son was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. CureDuchenne is the global leader in research, patient care and innovation for improving and extending the lives of children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. In 2016, Mack and Sally Brown joined forces with Tim and Laura Revell, the parents of two children who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy, to start an annual CureDuchenne Gala in Austin. Fired Up Charity, the charity arm of Johnny Carino restaurants, presented this year’s gala benefit, held at the University of Texas Golf Club. Jim Spencer served as the emcee, and Heath Hale Auctioneers led the live auction. According to Tim Revell, this year’s event grossed $360,000 and netted a new record of $264,000. “That is half the down payment we need for the next research project we are funding in Dallas,” notes Tim. Massage Harmony HERE’S SOME GOOD news for Lakeway residents. Massage Harmony—a locally owned and operated spa offering the most affordable massages in Austin—just brought its award-winning concept to 2303 Ranch Rd. 620 South in the Randall’s Shopping Center. It features eight relaxing massage rooms, including the company’s first couples’ suite. Massage Harmony is the brainchild of therapist Derrick Amoriko and represents a new concept in the massage industry. After more than 15 years working as a therapist, Amoriko decided to strike out on his own with this new spa concept. “I first became interested in massage when I needed to find relief for my own chronic back pain that began as a child,” said owner Derrick Amoriko. “By expanding into Lakeway, I am giving even more people an affordable way to reap the healing benefits of the regular bodywork that made a huge impact in my life.” Named in honor of Austin’s local music scene, Massage Harmony differentiates itself from competitors by not requiring clients to purchase a membership in order to take advantage of its low rates. First-time visitors can enjoy a $40 introductory rate for a 60-minute massage (regularly $70). Even better, clients can choose from any of these massage modalities without paying extra: Ashiatsu, Deep Tissue, Prenatal, Reflexology, Sports, Swedish and Thai. It is also worth noting that Massage Harmony compensates its therapists with some of the highest rates in the industry. Gift certificates and discounted package rates are also available. Exercise Is Medicine “WHAT IS THE recommended dosage for older adults?” In determining safe and effective physical activity levels for older adults (65+), the American Medical Association and the American College of Sports Medicine established the concept that exercise is medicine (EIM) and set up “dosage” recommendations for older adults. The AMA and ACSM specified that the correct dosage of exercise should be determined by an assessment of an individual’s current physical activity level and identification of any medical limitations. They recommended professional guidance in administering age-appropriate fitness programs of 2 ½ hours physical activity each week. These programs should include 10 minutes of aerobic activity, balance training 3 times per week, strength training 2 times each week, core development 3 times each week, and stretching before or after each training session. Janis Horne, fitness trainer with 6 years experience working with older adults, developed her program of EIM senior-specific, injury prevention exercise training. Her EIM program includes the five domains of effective exercise. These domains include cardiovascular activity for the heart and lungs, strength training to work muscles and stimulate bone density, flexibility training for fluidity of movement and joint protection, balance training for posture and stability and to decrease risk of falling, and core development for protection of the spine and internal organs. Ms. Horne’s work with seniors not only combines these 5 domains but also allows for regular modifications based on each client’s lifestyle, ability, mobility, and health.
EXERCISE is MEDICINE PRESCRIPTION FITNESS PROGRAMS FOR ADULTS 65 AND OLDER Chronic Health Problems • Risk of Falling • Joint Pain Back Pain • Limited Mobility • Mild Memory Loss Hip and Knee Replacements • Arthritis • Over Weight Trouble Sitting or Standing • Recovering from Surgery EIM Prescription Fitness Programs are professionally designed for each individual with a focus on injury prevention and improving overall quality of life and quantity of years. THE IDEAL PATIENT-doctor relationship is really a partnership. Research has shown that a strong patient-doctor relationship leads to better medical outcomes and patient satisfaction. Open communication is critical to managing good health and, for it to be effective, the physician needs to be easily accessible, actively engage with the patient and provide timely followup. Unfortunately, physicians working in today’s environment have administrative distractions that can result in longer waits, less one-on-one time and slower responses. Today, more physicians and patients are looking to concierge medicine for a better healthcare experience. In this model, patients are frequently seen in their own homes, have access to their physician at all times and are not restricted by many of the time constraints in the traditional system. Often, tiered services are offered to provide options for cost and level of need. Studies show patients of concierge primary care practices have less need for other healthcare services. One study showed patients experienced 35% fewer hospitalizations, 65% fewer emergency department visits, 66% fewer specialist visits and 82% fewer surgeries than similar populations receiving conventional care. The concierge model can be especially attractive to aging adults as they begin to experience more and increasingly complex health problems, yet wish to remain independent. This level of care allows time for a close relationship to develop with a deep understanding of what is most important to the senior. At Be Well MD, Mark Carlson, MD, Geriatrician and Founder of Be Well MD, understands the needs of aging adults and is prepared to provide customized care to meet those needs.

Lake Travis Independent Living SENIORS MAY BE at a higher risk of dehydration due to decreased sense of thirst, fear of being incontinent, swallowing difficulties and gastrointestinal disorders. In addition, an increased risk of infections, pressure sores, falls, and broken bones can be attributed to lack of proper hydration. Healthy living and providing your body with adequate water each day can slow down premature aging and prevent many seniors from ending up in the hospital due to dehydration. Signs of dehydration include loss of skin elasticity (skin tenting), concentrated urine, dizziness, increased heart rate, dryness in the nose and mouth, constipation or decreased bowel movements, bowel discomfort, and acute confusion. Water hydrates every cell and every organ in the body, including the brain. More than 2/3 of the brain is made up of water. Age can affect the body’s physical and cognitive functions. Water won’t solve this problem but it is necessary for seniors in their daily lives. During the winter months in Texas, when the temperatures are pleasant, people tend to be more active, but because it is not hot outside, many do not think about drinking enough water. It is important to make sure you and your loved one are drinking enough water and getting the exercise and activity needed for health and overall wellbeing. Resolve to make water consumption an important part of your daily routine. Lake Travis Independent Living is slated to open its doors to seniors in Lakeway early 2017 and will offer the perfect lakeside lifestyle. ’EST MAGNIFIQUE” was the theme of this year’s Annual Spring Gala, hosted by The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway. The Gala was extravagant, and organizers and committee members devoted painstaking attention to every single detail. The over-the-top decorations in the Vistas Ballroom at The Lakeway Inn & Resort included black and white ostrich plumes. Straight from Moulin Rouge, Dottie’s Follies opened the show with a spectacular dance, choreographed by Dottie Stevenson. Following a delicious meal, the guests enjoyed their evening by dancing the night away to the wonderful music provided by People’s Choice Band. The Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway, founded in 1985, is an organization for the ladies of greater Lakeway and is dedicated to promoting the social, cultural, and intellectual growth of its members. More than 500 women are now active members of The Women’s Club of Great Lakeway. These ladies come from all over the world but they now call Lakeway “home”. C’est vraiment magnifique!

HE SONESTA Hotel Bee Cave hosted the 2017 Bee Cave Police Benevolent Foundation Gala, raising more than $35,000, after expenses, through ticket sales and a live auction. Bee Cave Police Chief Gary Miller, who is viewed with great respect by the force he commands, used this opportunity to rough out a personal sketch of each individual officer. He spoke of their passions, their hobbies, and their families, leaving patrons feeling connected to the men and women who serve this community in such an important way. The Sonesta, the event’s presenting sponsor, served a fine meal and, following the live auction, patrons danced to tunes selected by DJ David Muse. Monies raised at this event serve the mission of the Bee Cave Police Benevolent Foundation, which is: “to provide financial assistance and benefit to the Bee Cave Police Department and other area public safety employees and their families; and to support community and law enforcement initiatives, memorials, scholarships, and educational programs.” To learn more about the Bee Cave Police Benevolent Foundation, or to donate online, please visit http://bcpbf.org. N APRIL 23rd, Austin-based CC4C (Cheyanna’s Champions 4 Children) hosted its third annual gala, ‘A Night to Uplift’ at beautiful Ranch Austin. The ‘Longhorns & Lace’ themed event welcomed 250 guests in cowboy boots and featured UT’s live mascot Bevo, chicken bingo games, a wine toss, a silent & live auction, as well as live music by country music star Drew Womack. The weather was a perfect 75 degrees as guests enjoyed a magical night under the stars! The event raised a record-breaking $400,368 with a bevy of exclusive live auction items. CC4C provides hope, help and inspiration to children battling rare and undiagnosed medical conditions and is the only charity of its kind in Texas. The nonprofit matches each sponsored child with a Champion Teammate who provides the championed child with unforgettable experiences. The children are also made honorary members of a high school team. These programs keep the children emotionally uplifted so they can continue to fight for healing as the charity connects them to top medical institutions and organizations throughout the U.S. Locally, they have partnerships with Lake Travis High School, Georgetown High School and Regents… just to name a few! They also have had incredible Champion Teammates like country music’s Jack Ingram, Drag Racing World Champion Tony Schumacher, and WWE Superstars Mark Calaway and Mark Henry. Unmasked! WONDERS & WORRIES SPRING GALA

ACH YEAR millions of parents are diagnosed with a life-threatening—and sometimes terminal—illness, and their kids are frequently left feeling confused, sad, angry, scared and alone, often with a lot of unanswered questions. The mission of Wonders & Worries, a nonprofit founded in 2001, is to provide professional support for children throughout the course of a parent’s illness. They offer services in English and Spanish to families free of charge and help children understand their parent’s illness, treatment, and side effects of their treatments. Further, Wonders and Worries offers a safe environment to help children process the emotions associated with the disruptive, painful changes their family is experiencing. Children are taught healthy coping skills that will serve them throughout their lives. Unmasked—Mardi Gras Masquerade was the theme of the 3rd annual gala, held at the JW Marriott. This year, the event honored Meredith Cooper, co-founder and former execuNicole Halder, Board President tive director, as well as Shelly and David Bain, who chaired the gala and led it to a new level and former W&W client of success. Presented by Texas Oncology, the 400 Unmasked attendees Dwayne Cooper, Samantha Houshand, Shannon and Trey Owen raised more than $460,000 for the philanthropy—the most successAli Houshand, Meredith Cooper ful spring gala in the 15-year history of the organization—and nearly double the amount raised in 2016. “I cannot overstate the value of what the organization did for my family in our hardest, most trying times,” shared Shelly Bain, who was diagnosed with breast cancer when her children were 4 and 7 years old. “Our children processed and adapted, thanks to Wonders & Worries. What they did for us is what they do for hundreds of other central Texas families—free of charge.” The evening featured a festive cocktail hour with luxurious raffle prizes. Emcee Rod Babers, former Texas Longhorns football player, kept spirits high with his infectious sense of humor. Heath Hale of Health Hale Auctioneers led a live auction with gusto before DJ Gatsby Sel and Isabella Unite, Steve Szostak, Sophia Castaneda ended the evening with a selection of mixed tunes for the afterparty. HE RISE SCHOOL of Austin was founded in 2003 by an Austin family with a daughter who was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Upon discovering there was not a preschool in Austin that offers full time education to developmentally delayed children, they created The Rise School, a school that provides exceptional education to all their students in an inclusive setting. The 10th Annual Heart & Soul Fashion Luncheon, held at the J.W. Marriott and benefitting The Rise School, was an event that honored both current and former students and their families. The fabulous silent auction offered a variety of high-end items, including designer handbags and jewelry. Matt Swinney was the Emcee and Auction Advisor. Program Director Megen Glass hosted a question and answer session with Rise School Alumni, and these children shared how their time at Rise School prepared them for elementary school. Following the Q&A session, guests were treated to an exceptional fashion show that featured current and former Rise students, in honor of their 10th anniversary. Some of the kids danced down the runway, and some were more reserved, but all had a great time, as they were escorted by their father and/or grandfather. Donna Stockton-Hicks presented the Service Award to Cindy Lind, to honor her for her years of dedication and hard work. This event raised $226,145!

In her address, Shelley remarked, “We learned about Breakthrough when Yasmine was in 5th grade and signed up right away. Breakthrough changed my daughter’s life and my life with the power of compassion. They created a nurturing environment where it was safe to be smart. Jennifer, Yasmine’s advisor, pushed her in a way I couldn’t. Yasmine not only graduated high school but graduated from St. Edward’s University in 3 years and is now half-way through the law program at UT. Breakthrough Austin 2017 STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN
N
O ONE explains the mission of Breakthrough more eloquently than Executive Director Michael Griffith. “What if we could change the world around us by changing the life of a single child? What if we could tackle some of the most pressing challenges in the community simply by giving a 6th grader, who happens to be from a low-income community, a sense of what’s possible for him or herself and the experiences and support to achieve that vision? It is for these first-generation 6th graders that Breakthrough exists. The reality in Central Texas is this: Our region is experiencing an ever-widening economic divide, one that has little chance of being bridged—if not for aggressive intervention. This is not a theory or a trend. Here are the facts: Nearly two-thirds of new jobs in Central Texas require a post-secondary degree. Moreover, any form of a college degree increases an individual’s lifetime earnings by 75% over that of a high school diploma. Yet less than 12% of high school graduates from low-income communities in Central Texas will earn a post-secondary degree of any kind. It’s not hard to connect the statistics. The path out of poverty, at the very least, requires a post-secondary degree. Breakthrough Austin enables and empowers students from low-income communities to become first-generation college graduates. By beginning our work with students in middle school, every one of our students receives our unshakable 12-year commitment. From

middle school to high school through college graduation, we are there. And our program works. Breakthrough students are graduating from college at nearly FIVE TIMES the rate of their low-income peers. On April 4th, nearly 300 Austinites gathered at the historic grounds of the French Legation for Breakthrough’s 12th Annual Champions Celebration. Together, the event raised a record-setting $355,321 to support this year’s 1,425 Breakthrough students on their path to becoming first-generation college graduates! Both the Webber Family Foundation and the Topfer Family Foundation generously matched $100,000 in donations made in support of the Champions Celebration. EXAS BASEBALL was very special to Sean and Brodie Copeland. Both tragically lost their lives in the terrorist attack in Nice, France on July 14, 2016. Surviving family members Kim, Austin, and Maegan Copeland have collaborated with the Longhorn Foundation to introduce a baseball scholarship endowment created to preserve and honor the life, legacy, and spirit of Sean and Brodie. The Sean & Brodie Copeland Memorial Endowment for Texas Baseball, when fully realized, will provide an annual scholarship package for a baseball student-athlete who best embodies the qualities the family holds dear. “They both were givers-empathetic, loving, caring and kind. That’s who they were. Truly genuinely compassionate people.” Kim says of Sean and Brodie. “They had such a passion for each other and for life. They were two peas in a pod.” The Sean and Brodie Copeland Memorial Endowment presented its first concert celebration with renowned country music artist Jack Ingram at the Nutty Brown Café and Amphitheatre. Assisting Jack with the celebration were local artists Chad Hudson and Django Walker of the Django Walker Band. Many Lake Travis residents flocked to Nutty Brown to support the Copeland family. “I Cole Nelson

ILL COUNTRY Galleria celebrated their property transformation/grand reopening with festivities including live music, a fashion show, food sampling, special shopping offers, and a firework show. “We’re thrilled to celebrate the completion of our property transformation with the community,” said Courtney Bunte, Property Marketing Manager at Hill Country Galleria. “Whether it be for shopping, dining or entertainment, the new look and feel of our center truly enhances the customer experience.” This multi-million-dollar property transformation offers a more vibrant, comfortable, and convenient shopping and entertaining destination. The renovations at Hill Country Galleria include landscaping upgrades, more shaded areas, and new walkways. HE LAKE Travis Chapter of the National Charity League held their spring mother-daughter tea at the Hills Country Club. At this special event, members celebrate the year’s accomplishments and install a new Board of Directors. Lake Travis High School Principal, Gordon Butler, served as the guest speaker and read a book titled “Someday” by Allison Meghee. He used the story to relate to the daughters in the room, from their mother’s perspective. His touching and heartfelt speech resonated with both mothers and daughters. The Lake Travis Chapter of the National Charity League, established in 2013, is an organization dedicated to community service, leadership development, and cultural experiences. The Lake Travis McKenna & Dale O’Toole Chapter partners with many different local nonprofits, providing hours of community service. Through these character-building partnerships members learn the importance of giving back to the community and the value of philanthropy. These young ladies master essential skills, such as project management and communication, that will serve them well in future leadership roles throughout their lives. Cultural experiences expose them to the arts, music, tradition, and theatre. The NCL does its part to foster the growth of well-rounded, strong young women, an outcome that is encouraged by the all the mothers taking tea with their daughters. Lakeway Tea Benefits Our Wounded STORY BY BROOKE TOELLER | PHOTOS BY PATTI PIESZCHALA
T
HE ANNUAL Lakeway Tea, benefiting Help Our Wounded, raised a record $10,104, more than twice the amount raised last year, from ticket sales and donations! Held at The Hills Country Club, this charming event featured traditional High Tea and stunning table decorations. Tea committee members, Ann Neighbors, Nancy Clayton, Dottie Stevenson, and Linda Swan spent many hours working diligently to organize this event and their hard work paid off, as not a single detail was overlooked at this chic event! Kendra Scott, Ben Kuenemann, and Sue Cornett donated items to the tea that were given to the tables who donated the most. Blanche Magnolia Beauregard made a special appearance and humorously addressed the stylish ladies. “Disney Girls,” designed by Shelley Smith, won the prize for Best in Show. All funds raised benefitted Help Our Wounded, a local non-profit dedicated to helping wounded soldiers and their families. Please see helpourwounded.org for more information and to donate.
