a note FROM THE PUBLISHER “For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen” Romans 11:36
It is beyond my wildest expectations to launch a magazine.
I am humbled and honored to work with so many amazing and talented Mississippians. I am constantly inspired by our state - from our rich heritage to deep-rooted traditions, to our war m and inviting hospitality. When I talk to brides I always say planning a wedding really isn’t that hard, it’s just about making a lot of decisions. Life is what becomes a bit overwhelming. I truly want to help couples focus not only on their wedding, but more importantly, on a loving, lasting marriage. Inspiration Mississippi is all about Local Love: love of great fashion, flowers, photography and of course, food. We want to inspire Mississippians to shop local, buy local and support local businesses. Emma, this issue is for you, my darling daughter. I pray you grow up loving Mississippi as much as I do. I had a dream to launch a magazine about five years ago and with God’s timing and the perfect team, it has become a reality. To the ladies of Inspiration Mississippi…thank you for your hard work, intense dedication and amazing spirit. You all inspire and motivate me constantly. But most of all, thank you for your friendship. To our advertisers, my dear friends, thank you for trusting me in this vision to inspire Mississippians. Your faith and encouragement have been such a blessing, and we hope you are as moved by this premier issue as we are. You are all true professionals and your work is what inspired us to start Inspiration Mississippi and for that, I salute you all!! What an amazing year 2014 has been for me both personally and professionally. I married the absolute most amazing man I know. He is my soul mate and the love of my life. I am so thankful for our precious daughter, Emma, who continues to bless us in so many ways. Everything truly does come from HIM and for that, I count my blessings everyday!

Inspi red WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY AARON PHILLIPS PHOTOGRAPHY In lieu of a lovely, but typical engagement party, we recommend celebrating your upcoming vows with an intimate dinner. In a masculine setting of exposed brick walls and rustic wooden furnishings, we added a touch of sophisticated glamour: gorgeous flowers in vibrant shades of red, pink, purple and cream and a simple modern cake. The glow of votive candles and red lighting add warmth to the space, while reflecting beautifully off of the bride and her friends’ floor-sweeping, sparkling gowns. We could not think of a better way to toast meaningful friendships and a lifetime of happiness!

WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY
Maddy Mayfield just might surprise you. At five years old, she is utterly adorable, with beautiful brown locks, sparkling eyes, and deep, intoxicating dimples that form with every smile. She is a lovely, sweet little girl. In fact, she is too sweet. Last spring, Maddy’s parents, Stephanie and John Mayfield, observed some subtle changes in their daughter. Stephanie says, “We noticed her increase in appetite, yet she was losing weight; but the most alarming symptom was her excessive thirst.” Maddy’s peculiar behavior lingered for several weeks, and Stephanie began researching. She soon came across type 1 diabetes. Previously known as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes is a chronic condition in which a person’s pancreas produces little to no insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is necessary to convert starches, sugars, and other foods into energy. Unfortunately, Maddy’s symptoms were a perfect match. John, a Veterinarian at Animal Medical Center in Hattiesburg, often treats dogs diagnosed with diabetes. After a pediatrician friend urged them to test Maddy’s sugar level, “We headed to the Vet Clinic!” laughs Stephanie. With their fears confirmed, Maddy was diagnosed and referred to Blair E. Batson Hospital for Children in Jackson. Stephanie and John trusted God and placed their darling daughter in His hands. At the same time, they realized the necessity of educating themselves about Maddy’s disease. During their first few hazy days at Batson, the Mayfield family had a wonderful visit from a representative of the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi. “They delivered a backpack to us at Batson full of diabetes supplies, school forms, and educational materials…I could go on and on about what a great organization it is and how much they helped us!” Back home in Hattiesburg, a lifestyle change was necessary for Maddy, and miraculously, the Mayfield family was already equipped. Stephanie firmly believes that God began preparing her for Maddy’s diagnosis the year before her diabetes was detected. “While pregnant with my second child, Knox, I gained a total of 75 pounds. Losing the first 20 pounds was easy…that was the ‘baby weight.’ But I was left with 55 pounds of real fat to lose,” admits Stephanie. “With the help from God I made a decision to eat clean and start working out. Maddy was diagnosed after my life changing decision to get healthy, and it was like a ‘God wink!’ It gave me so much joy and peace knowing that He is taking care of us no matter the circumstances. He equipped me to take care of my little girl AND made me healthy again. God is good all of the time!”
Stephanie began posting photos of her children on social media, and proudly adopted the hashtags #toosweet and #liveabetes. “When Maddy was diagnosed, I kept thinking that we already knew Maddy was such a sweet girl, and God confirmed she is just #toosweet. She needs insulin to manage just how sweet she is!” A dear friend of Stephanie’s is a nurse at University of Mississippi Medical Center, and comforted her with the term “Live-abetes.” “She said that because of modern medicine, Maddy will surely not die from this disease. #Liveabetes just kind of stuck!” March 2014 marked the one-year anniversary of Maddy’s diagnosis. Stephanie and John were determined to honor their brave daughter, but were having trouble coming up with the perfect idea. So, they turned to Maddy! Maddy absolutely loves to play grocery store, which sparked a brilliant idea. Maddy dreamed of building a beautiful “Lemon-Aid Stand,” complete with a colorful pennant, gorgeous flowers, and pink and yellow sugar free lemonade. But Stephanie and John’s lovely little girl didn’t want to just honor her anniversary; Maddy wished to raise money for the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi, the very organization that gave her so much hope and encouragement. Stephanie says proudly, “You can’t help but notice she is a LOT more than what meets the eye.” This courageous, generous kindergartner is living with diabetes and thriving beautifully. Maddy’s disease is monitored daily by an insulin pump and a continual glucose monitor, affectionately known as “Pinky.” Maddy’s kindergarten teacher, Lynn Tedford, says, “Maddy is the bravest girl I know. She never complains about her situation. She has explained to the class what her ‘Pinky’ is for, and also why she has to prick her finger sometimes. I have been very blessed to have such a sweet girl in my class. She has been an inspiration to me!” Though Maddy’s diagnosis was unexpected, the Mayfield family continues on their journey with tremendous confidence, bold faith and unfailing optimism. Stephanie is determined to not let diabetes define Maddy or their family. She notes, “Philippians 4:6-7 says, ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.’ God has shown me over and over that He is in control – not me. My part is to take care of Maddy while I can, but God will do the real work. He will protect her.”

TEXTILES Inspired by the Delta WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS
The colorful beauty and rich history of the Mississippi Delta have been exquisitely woven into a vibrant new textile line. Clarksdale native, Kim Duease, has had a passion for art since she was a child. For the past twenty years, Duease has been designing spaces that “are a sensual feast, rooms that surprise and delight the senses, places where color and creativity culminate and explode in glorious abandon and truly touch the soul.” As an interior designer, Duease has often visualized textiles for particular projects. Though the market offers an array of dreamy fabrics, they were lacking the artful aesthetic Duease was seeking. She began delicately painting her bold ideas onto a canvas, and her fabric and wallcovering line was born. As she continued creating, Duease realized her textiles were telling a story. She says, “Each pattern did have its own voice…BLUES RIVER…BIG MUDDY…COAHOMA …and on and on. I believe it was divine intervention. All that I have been painting for the last year has been telling the story of my home.” One brushstroke. One brilliant color. One canvas at a time. Duease has brought the people, landscape, and flavor of her beloved Delta to life. Her patterns are available in a range of fabrics, and can be used for many purposes: pillows, window treatments, bedding, outdoor seating, and even garden umbrellas. She also has plans for loungewear, apparel, scarves, and athletic wear. Duease’s designs offer a handsome slice of Mississippi in any area of life. Her beautiful line will be available in the Delta exclusively at Maven in Coahoma, and nationwide through select designers and showrooms. Duease reveals, “My favorite things about Mississippi are family, friends, and lifelong memories that I will always cherish. Now, these are all being documented, in a way, on my textiles. Telling my story in a way that I hope others can use and enjoy, weaving color, pattern and inspiration into their daily lives.”

Katina Brandon T HE SOUT H WA REHOUS E | JACKS ON, M IS S IS S IPPI Ten years ago, Brandon Hutson admired a beautiful blonde at a high school football game. A friend yelled, "Hey, this guy wants your number!" to Katina Fowler, and the rest is history. Katina and Brandon attended Mississippi State University, and he sweetly proposed with an engraved brick from Davis Wade Stadium. After traditional Greek Orthodox vows, a spectacular reception was held at The South in downtown Jackson. The setting was elegant and romantic, with garden roses woven throughout the white, ivory and blush decor.

MISSISSIPPI CHILDREN’S MUSEUM | JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI
T
ori and Max Harrigill spoiled friends and family with an extraordinary trip around the world for their sweet sixteenth. Inspired by their favorite cuisine and vacation spots, the twins wished to truly bring each location to life. They succeeded; the Mississippi Children’s Museum of Jackson was transformed into a spectacular global soiree! A food truck warmly welcomed guests outside of the museum, serving delicious appetizers and hinting at what was to come. The entryway represented India and glowed with sparkling sequins and rich jewel tones. Authentic Indian fare and a Henna tattoo artist enticed guests before they swarmed the dance floor, while colorful confetti swirled and a DJ spun American and Indian hits. The next area of the museum felt like strolling straight into The Big Easy. Jazz music filled the air as guests dined on Cajun food, visited a caricaturist, donned Mardi Gras masks, and left with bags of colorful beads and pralines. Laissez les bons temps rouler! Hula dancers, refreshing beverages and tropical food lured guests downstairs, as they entered the islands of Hawaii. Beautiful flowers and colorful leis made for a dazzling aloha. Mexico was decorated in vibrant shades of red, gold and green, and featured an impressive mariachi singer, maracas, sombreros, and Mexican candy. Mangia Bene Catering served fresh pastas, pizzas and tiramisu in Italy, as guests hammed with fake Italian mustaches, enjoying candy and another caricaturist. What an unforgettable evening! Throughout the event, lighting, holograms and a spectacular carpet stunned in hues of purple and white, in honor of Tori and Max’s next thrilling destination: Millsaps College.

CLOTHING & FURNISHINGS FOR GENTLEMEN
a humble servant W RI T T E N BY M ITCHE LL WALTE RS

n March 2013, an international media explosion swirled around a tiny baby girl and an extremely destructive virus. Born to an HIV-positive mother in a rural hospital, the infected infant was rushed to University of Mississippi Medical Center for immediate care. Upon her arrival, at a mere 30 hours old, a doctor began treating her with three aggressive drugs. Twenty-three months later, it appeared the child, dubbed the “Mississippi baby,” had been functionally cured of HIV. The world took notice. At the heart of the storm was Dr. Hannah Gay, a brilliant pediatric HIV specialist at UMMC. Hannah was recognized as one of TIME Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world, and she gracefully waded through the spotlight. Beneath the image of a world-renowned physician is a shy woman who can send a wave of calm over you in a simple conversation. Hannah says softly, “My faith defines who I am. It influences everything I do and every decision that I make.” Not originally trained in HIV or infectious diseases, Hannah’s devotion to God and her family have led her down a fascinating career path to success. Faith pulled Hannah, her husband Paul and their two small children to the famine-stricken country of Ethiopia in 1987. She helped orchestrate major feeding projects, provided clean water supplies, and Photo Credits: The University of Mississippi Medical Center happily offered healthcare for mission employees and their families. But mostly, Hannah loved staying home and caring for her children. “When we arrived in Ethiopia, we had two children. When we left in 1993, we had four,” Hannah laughs. Her pastor, Steve Street of Trace Ridge Baptist Church in Ridgeland, says, “The Gays are an extremely close family. I know Hannah and Paul had mixed emotions about leaving the mission calling, but they returned to Jackson for the sake of their children.” Back home in Jackson, Hannah was longing to get back into American medicine, but only part-time. She could not bear missing out on quality time with her children. Hannah’s daughter, Ruth Gay Thomas, says, “Never was there a time when my mom didn’t make a piano recital or a school play. Her family has always been her first priority, and her kids at work are also a huge priority. She has always had the perfect balance.” Hannah approached the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UMMC and he offered her a part-time position as a disease specialist in the HIV clinic. “I told him that I had no training whatsoever in HIV or infectious diseases. I was just a general pediatrician,” says Hannah. “He looked at me and said, ‘that’s okay. You will learn.’” Two months later, she inherited the HIV program, at a time when the knowledge base of HIV was spreading as quickly as wildfire. “We discovered we could prevent transmission from a mother to an infant, which was so exciting! We also began developing new and better drugs for infected children. It has been very rewarding to see the transformation of a disease thought to be a universally fatal illness into a chronic, treatable illness.” Hannah also laughs,” I have been stuck in the HIV program for twenty years now!”

Daphne Sigler, RN Case Manager with the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at UMMC, works closely with Hannah’s patients and their families. “The babies are our priority. Being infected with HIV is overwhelming, and our role is to make this process as comfortable and easy as possible.” She adds, “Hannah is wonderful. She is reassuring with our families and patients; we cry with them and we celebrate with them. Hannah is kind and generous, and has such a calming effect to her. She is an excellent doctor and a wonderful resource for the entire state of Mississippi.” Across the country, the HIV transmission rate from mother to infant is now less than one percent. However, some mothers are not properly treated during pregnancy, and their child can become exposed during labor and delivery. The “Mississippi baby” was one such case. While the media called Hannah’s treatment “bold, gutsy and revolutionary,” Hannah simply states, “I was among those around the world treating babies with high-risk exposures. That was standard therapy for me.” The child’s virus was controlled, and she continued seeing Hannah regularly until around 12 months, when she began missing appointments. Hannah and her staff suspected that she was not receiving her medication. Suddenly, she stopped coming. With help from the Department of Human Services, the child was found at 23-months-old and her mother admitted she had not given her any medicine since her 18-month visit. Shockingly, when tests were run, the virus was undetectable in her body. “I was totally confused. Bumfuzzled,” admits Hannah. State-of-the-art labs could not find any replication of the virus in her blood. “Usually the HIV virus shows up in the blood within two weeks of not taking medication. For this child to have gone 6 months and have tests come back negative was so highly unusual, it was unique. There had never been a baby reported like this before.” News outlets flooded Hannah with attention. Her daughter, Ruth, reflects, “Never in a million years would you expect this quiet, shy woman who hates attention to be in the thick of the spotlight!” Even with the glare of the world blindingly focused on her, Hannah directed the glory to God. “I was not specifically thinking about my life and I didn’t pray over the decision to treat the child that day. I was just practicing the best medicine I knew how to practice,” says Hannah. “I did not dream in my wildest dreams that this particular case would be anything special. I was trying to prevent her from being infected. I failed – it was God who did the miracles, and I just happened to be standing close by at the time.” Steve Street adds with awe, “Even with the media storm around her, she quietly came into church, enjoyed singing in the choir, and lovingly cared for children in the nursery. Those were her preferred places. We have a deep respect for her in our church as a servant. A humble servant.” The “Mississippi baby’s” virus remained undetected until her 27-month birthday, when disappointing news struck. Her tests came back positive in July 2014. Thankfully, she is on medication and responding well. Hannah smiles and says, “In Science, it is common that we learn as much or more from our failures as from our successes. It opened up a new line of research and we are still hoping this case will be a big contributor to a cure.” With God lighting her path, Hannah is taking significant strides in fighting this complex disease.

bring home WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY
Jessica and Robby Followell were savoring every sweet moment with their newborn baby, Meg.
Each soft breath, precious sound and tender smile delighted the young couple. Robby says lovingly, “We had this little five-month-old who completely rocked our world. She was a great baby. Meg slept like a champion and has always had such a happy nature. Jess and I began thinking about having another child and building our family. But one day a friend’s Twitter post unexpectedly grabbed our attention.” The course of Jessica and Robby’s life was radically changed. The social media link led to a trailer of a documentary entitled it’s a girl. The film follows families in India and China who, despite repeated pregnancies, continue to abandon or abort their daughters because of their gender. Robby recounts, “These families keep having girls, but society tells them to want boys. Having girls can be dangerous in some cultures.” Gazing adoringly at their darling baby girl, Jessica and Robby felt surprisingly lured by the trailer. “We took a deep breath and stepped back, but found we were more affected by the documentary than the hundreds of other things we were exposed to on a daily basis. It tugged on our hearts beyond that one viewing.” Jessica adds, “Things happened all at once. It seemed like the Lord was steering us toward adoption and we began taking slow steps of obedience.” As owners of Followell Fotography in Clinton, Robby and Jessica capture extraordinary moments for a living. Their passion for family and faith is evident in their photos, as well as every word the lovely couple breathes. Robby says, “As we began our long journey toward adoption, it felt strangely quick. There was this sense of urgency. Was it the staggering realization that children are abandoned everyday, or was it the story God was writing for us?” With India calling, Jessica and Robby prayerfully began the arduous adoption process in January 2012. Robby laughs, “It is a never-ending paper trail. The busy paper work is still ongoing two years later!” In February 2014, they were matched with a precious little girl at an orphanage in Calcutta. Robby and Jessica lovingly named her Eden. Robby says, “It is kind of cool that we started the process a year before Eden was born. We felt it was a quick decision, but Meg is now three-years-old and we will be bringing Eden home very soon.” International adoption requires an extensive home study, and Jessica and Robby realized the rising costs would be exorbitant - roughly $35,000. Their award-winning business is highly successful, but the adoption costs were a large portion of their annual income. Robby admitted feeling, “If this was going to happen, it was because God was going to step in and provide a community to support us bringing home this child.”
130 inspirationms.com | fall | #getinspiredms
God provided bountifully. About a year into their adoption journey, Robby and Jessica became vocal about their financial needs. “One Sunday afternoon, our neighbor said that someone had driven by and placed something in our mailbox. We found a simple white envelope with a post-it note saying, ‘To help bring Eden home.’ An anonymous donor left us over $4,000 in cash.” Someone felt the need to give selflessly, and impressively, did not want any praise. Jessica and Robby agree, “Unbelievable. That was emotional overload!” In May of 2014, Jessica and Robby held a large fundraiser, hoping to collect the final expenses for travel, roughly $8,000. Several Jackson-area artisans and craftsmen donated beautiful, hand-made items to be sold, and Fresh Cut Catering provided delicious fare free of charge. Hundreds of guests flooded the event and in one remarkable evening, over $15,000 was raised. Robby says, “It so far exceeded what we needed that we gave a large portion of the funds to close friends who are also adopting internationally. They were helping us that night and were shocked to receive the overflow, which will help bring their child home from Africa.” Even a thoughtful eight-year-old girl raised money for the couple. By selling soft drinks and candy, she alone raised over $250 to bring Eden home. In awe, Jessica says, “We have been so blessed and loved by the Jackson community.” Robby notes, “Many people say their first excuse to not adopt is the expense. We are complete examples of the fact that it is a silly excuse! Adoption almost surprisingly tugs at your heart in a way that one wouldn’t expect. People become so engaged in the thought of completing a family, with a child that is unwanted.” Eden will surely complete her devoted family. When Robby and Jessica began searching for her name, they came across Eden, which means, “delight.” They immediately latched onto the precious name. Meg signifies “purity” and the two make a perfect pair. “Pure Delight in our home. We love the connotation that creates,” says Robby. “Eden was a place in the Bible where people experienced God in an intimate way. She will create in us a better understanding of who God is, with her in our midst.” Robby and Jessica will journey to Calcutta in December 2014 to spend a few days with their adorable Eden, and finally bring her home. Eden has physical deformities on her hands and feet, caused by Amniotic Band Syndrome. Eden is now 1.5-years-old, and though there is some concern with her ability to walk, Jessica and Robby feel completely at peace that she is theirs. Robby softly says, “I have total confidence that the peace and certainty we have in our spirits will carry us through. We are less and less worried about her deformities and more excited about the spirit and life she will bring into our home and completely change us.” A powerful statement by two prepared, loving parents.

Words to Inspire W RI T T EN BY HE ATH FE RGUS ON
AN UNEXPLAINABLE LOVE Luke 2:8-14 8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!”
A
Messiah is coming! He is both God and man. He is coming to live among us! He is coming to restore and deliver us! It seems unnatural and nonsensical that God would be born in a stable to a poor carpenter’s family. Why would God leave His throne in Heaven to come and be with us for any amount of time? In attempting to answer this question, we try to understand a love that our minds cannot comprehend. Our capacity for understanding is a vessel incapable of containing the concepts defining that type of love. We must surrender our will to grasp this profound love. The fact is that He did come. He did walk among us. He engaged with us in order to help us begin to understand the significance of fellowship with Him and with one another. Christ brought the light of restoration and the spirit of relationship. Christ came so that He might reside in us. His presence on earth brought a new, personal level of fellowship with God. He came so that we might know Him and therefore be infused with the very character of God. In knowing Him, we are living with the Spirit within us. With that Spirit within us, we are now capable of sharing a new brand of love with one another. This new brand of love is that unexplainable and uncontainable love that is a picture of the hope that God has for us. This is a love so deep God sent His Son to live, suffer and die for us. The Gospel is founded upon this love. The Gospel is the reality that Christ’s life on earth and death on Calvary made fellowship with God possible. This is the love that we receive, yet will never be able to understand. As we recognize God’s love for us through the Advent season, may we find our way to sharing it with one another. May this love, as it is poured into us, spill out onto our brothers and sisters through our care and compassion for them.

THE YOUNG GUNS WRITTEN BY MITCHELL WALTERS | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY
D
eep in the country near Shaw, Mississippi, a glass Coca-Cola bottle and a string of wire sparked a young boy’s curiosity in music. It was the early 1960’s, and at the inquisitive age of five, Billy Smiley encountered his first instrument. He watched his mama and her friends thread a piece of wire from one wall to another, creating a diddle board. With a Coca-Cola bottle placed beneath it, the smooth movement of glass against the wire created sound. Smiley was intrigued. He reflects, “I really started developing musically in the seventh grade beginner’s band. I played the drums, and when I got to college, I moved to the guitar and piano. Now I sing and play the lead guitar [in a band called] Smiley and The Young Guns.” Fans of Smiley’s high-energy “show and dance band” are treated to a feast of popular cover songs and wild line dancing. Onstage, Smiley closes his eyes and belts out songs, swaying to the beat, with his signature braids resting casually on his shoulders. He is a true musician, exuding confidence and years of experience. During performances, Smiley is joined by his Young Guns. His son, Jamal, impresses on the trumpet; his other son, Dexter, masters the saxophone. Two other members of the band greatly favor Smiley’s looks, but they are not family. Leonard Stevenson, Jr. and Stephon Hughes are Smiley’s former students. Smiley served as the band director at Coleman Middle School for fifteen years, before retiring. “Teaching a child and watching him grow is a beautiful thing. I found my calling in Greenville; it is a music town.” Smiley’s artistic passion and gift for teaching began transforming lives. With his motto, “from school to the public,” he sought to encourage children to continue playing instruments well beyond graduation.
His son, Dexter, says, “My father started teaching me to play the piano when I was four or five years old. He would have us practicing rigorously, even to the point where we could play perfectly. He had a lot of pride in doing that.” Outside of the home, Smiley began not only teaching students at school, but also children he met through his church. Robert T. Bone Henderson recalls meeting Smiley at a church picnic, when he mentioned that he played trombone. A few days later, “Smiley told me to meet them at a place called the Walnut Street Blues Bar in Greenville, wear all black, and come on!” Smiley says modestly, “Young kids want to play music, and I want to play music. It was a team effort. They were already musicians without me. It was the right situation and the right time, and there I was, always ready to go.” Smiley and The Young Guns band has grown since the early years with Robert T-Bone Henderson on trombone, LaDearis Watson on effects and computer orchestra, Jonathon J. Rock as a dancer, and Robert Stomper, a celebrity drummer who hails from Memphis. LaDearis is one of Smiley’s former students from Coleman Middle School, and echoes Dexter’s sentiment that Smiley truly believes practice makes perfect. He recalls that as a student, if he did not know his music, he was not allowed to perform. “He taught the discipline and craft of learning your instrument. He wanted us to become better musicians.” And people. Outside of the studio, LeDearis has come to view Smiley as a father figure. “When I was growing up and needed help or someone to talk to, I could always go to him. He taught me three things: to respect him, and in turn respect all of my elders, learn my craft, and be humble.” Dexter acknowledges what a compassionate person his father is. “He would give the shirt off of his back. One time, a student of his was in trouble. and was kicked out of his home. My father allowed him to stay in our house for a few days. That’s the kind of person he is. If he knows you – especially if you were a student, he doesn’t mind going the extra mile to help you out.” At age 57, Smiley is just as enthralled with music as he was at age five. He professes that traveling and performing with his band is a selfish habit. “I am still on fire about playing music, and I am just overwhelmed with joy that I have individuals around me that are on fire about making music as well.” Smiley and his band typically play wedding receptions, and “at the end, we transform into a marching band and march the bride and groom to the limo with all the sparkle, fireworks and fans screaming and hollering. I must say, it is something to see,” marvels Smiley. After the lights of a memorable night on stage have faded, Smiley continues to encourage friends and family in his daily life. Through his lifelong passion, he has offered children invaluable wisdom, shelter, and even work. Dexter nails it when he says, “I think my father is an underrated artist. He doesn’t get as much attention as he deserves, and he is a pillar to the community and an inspiration to all. If I could be half the man he is, I would be grateful for that.”

WALKER WILBANKS W RI T T E N BY M ITCHE LL WALTE RS
W
alker Wilbanks stood out. He had a fetching head full of thick red hair, honest blue eyes and a face filled with endearing freckles. Much like Saul in 1 Samuel, verse 9, he was “A handsome young man. There was none finer – he literally stood head and shoulders above the crowd.” Walker was a teenage boy with an extraordinary heart. An easygoing, sweet guy, Walker enjoyed camping, deep-sea fishing, and cooking up fiercely competitive Ping-Pong matches against his little brother, Landon. Only two years his senior, Walker and Landon were extremely close and Landon looked to his big brother for laughs and advice. Walker was an active member in the youth group at First Baptist Church, and enjoyed fellowship with friends at a weekly Bible study. He was also a loving and devoted son to his parents, Sheila and David. Sheila reflects, “Walker was not perfect, but he always tried to do the right thing. He loved playing sports, he loved hanging out with his friends, he loved to laugh and he loved his family. He had a ‘driven’ spirit when it came to sports, but a ‘gentle’ spirit in everyday life.”

Walker was a remarkably talented baseball and football player and was fired up about the first game of Jackson Prep’s 2014 football season. Prep’s head football coach, Ricky Black says, “Walker’s attitude was so contagious that adults and other students enjoyed his presence and his friendship. Walker's athletic attitude was motivated by trust.... you could trust him to do his job and he had trust in others to do their job. It was my great pleasure to coach Walker Wilbanks, #65.” On August 22, after playing aggressively during the first half, Walker suddenly fell ill. From the stands, his close friend Ashley O’Mara noticed he had been helped to the bench. “The sideline doctors were surrounding him. If it had been any other football player I may have not been as astonished, but number 65 belonged to my beloved friend, Walker Wilbanks, a fighter.” Walker fought for three days until he slipped peacefully into eternity. News of his passing shook the city of Jackson, and hundreds of students overwhelmed his family with prayers and support. Area schools held prayer vigils and Prep’s rival, Jackson Academy, emblazoned their football helmets with the number 65. Sheila says, “In the hospital I was in complete and total shock. I remember being thankful and amazed when I saw all of the kids in the waiting room. They loved my son and that made me feel so good.” Sheila adds, “Walker was so compassionate. He was sweet and loving and would do anything for a friend.” Or even a stranger. When Walker obtained his driver’s license, he was determined to be an organ donor. “He was really giving. Why would he not donate his organs if they were perfectly good?” says Sheila. Walker gave the ultimate gift to many people. “When I received the letter telling me where his organs went, I cried and cried. Happy and sad tears mixed together,” says Sheila. He saved five lives with his heart, liver, pancreas, kidneys and lungs. Walker’s tender heart is miraculously beating strongly in another teen’s body. Upon hearing the news, Landon tweeted, “Walker’s heart is going to save a 14-year-old boy. Dang, that’s awesome.” Ashley says sweetly, “I now have my own personal guardian angel. Walker taught me to never take anything for granted and to appreciate the days that I have on earth with my loved ones…Walker Wilbanks, the red-headed boy who will never be forgotten, made me a better person.” Before his funeral, Walker’s treasured friends and pallbearers were asked to describe him in one word. Compliments poured out: funny, happy, laid back, loyal, strong, and a great friend. There truly was none finer; Walker stood head and shoulders above the crowd. Thank you, Walker, for reminding us to play hard, have faith, and love one another.
rooted faith WITH ADAM + ALLI PHOTOGRAPHY

t the age of thirteen, a beautiful redheaded girl met a sweet dark-headed boy at space camp in Jackson. During the last week of camp, Allison Nobles and Adam Hudson were locked into a dark simulator with no windows, no clock, a handful of friends, and a tight schedule regulated by their cohorts in mission control. Naturally, they bonded. With Alli living in Hattiesburg and Adam in Canton, the teens became pen pals and wrote endearing letters back and forth. Over the years, their correspondence dwindled as distance got in the way. Adam founded a software development company at seventeen but admits, “I have always been interested in photography!” He began shooting films and photographing friends. Alli also had a knack for photography. Adam says sweetly, “Back at space camp, I remember Alli running around with a disposable camera. She was the designated photographer for her family even though she didn’t have a nice camera.” The adoring childhood friends reconnected in college and soon became husband and wife. Alli says with awe, “With a genius brain like Steve Jobs, an adventurous heart like Johnny Depp, a loving spirit like Elf, and a totally hot body like Ryan Gosling, Adam inspires me to be a better me – and is always striving to be a better him.” She laughs, “Of course, this is just my opinion of how I view my husband!” She also adores his extensive collection of colorful, quirky socks. Alli says, “He becomes his sock character!” Equally enamored, Adam admires his wife’s delightful, warm spirit. He says, “Alli has an incredible heart for people. The best decision I ever made was marrying my best friend.” With Adam’s ten years of shooting experience, the two began attending workshops to perfect their wedding photography skills. During the first year of their marriage, Adam and Alli prayerfully opened their own business, Adam + Alli Photography. Alli says, ““Our faith plays a large part in our business. The tree in our logo actually has to do with being grounded and rooted in our faith. We would never push our beliefs on clients, but we do love when we can pray with or for our brides and grooms. We want our couples to be just as prepared for their marriage as they are for their wedding day!” Bride Laura Leone says, “Adam and Alli are the calm in the midst of the wedding storm! They are the stability that you look for on your wedding day. They adapt to the slightest change in schedule without compromising amazing quality.” Today, Adam and Alli specialize in creating magnificent memories for a bride and groom. Adam raves, “Alli approaches photography at an emotional level and connects beautifully with people. There is something magical about the moments she captures. I have the technical strength and we help each other.” The stunning redhead and the charming boy she met at space camp are truly a flawless team, and it shows in their lovely photographs. Adam and Alli’s talent, faith and incredible hearts are beautifully displayed in every moment they capture.
