Baby, The Stars Shine Bright has since spread around the world. Baby opened its first international retail store in Paris, France. The first North American retail store opened in San Francisco, California in August, 2009. Baby has also exhibited an official boutique at New York Anime Festival in 2009, sells their clothing through the New York store Tokyo Rebel, and in 2014 opened up their own official store in New York. Sub-brands for Baby include Alice and the Pirates and Hello Kitty/Charmmy Kitty. Alice, created in 2004, has a darker and more gothic look compared to the style typically associated with Baby. The famous Laforet department store in Harajuku features a store solely dedicated to clothing from the Alice line. Baby, the Stars Shine Bright and Alice and the Pirates have designed costumes for anime, including Black Butler and The Mystic Archives of Dantalian. The boutique was also featured in the novel Kamikaze Girls as well as its manga and live-action film adaptations; its main character is a big fan of Baby’s designs.

In 1988, fashion designer Akinori Isobe and his wife Fumiyo opened a clothing boutique in the Shibuya neighborhood in Tokyo. Naming their store “Baby, The Stars Shine Bright,” Baby specializes in the Lolita subcategory “Sweet Lolita,” a style influenced by Victorian and Edwardian clothing which features lighter, pastel colors and often uses sweet fruits, cute animals, fragrant flowers, and desserts in its fabric designs.

Masumi Kano, a designer for Baby, The Stars Shine Bright, studied Fashion and Design at the Bunka Fashion College in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Kano’s Baby designs are “kawaii” yet also offer a classical and elegant look closer to the “Dolly” style, which emphasizes an antique doll-like aesthetic. Kano debuted her work at Japan Expo in Paris, France, and has since attended conventions and fashion shows in America, Canada, China, and Sweden.
