Destination Guide

This guide is a sampling of the wonderful destinations in South Carolina’s Olde English District. To map out your trip, scan this QR code:
THE GATEWAY TO SOUTH CAROLINA’S PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE
The district spans seven counties in the north-central area of South Carolina:
CHESTER • CHESTERFIELD
FAIRFIELD • KERSHAW • LANCASTER
UNION • YORK
The Olde English District, often called the OED, earned its name from the region’s early settlement by the English in the mid-1770s, but a lot has changed since then. Today, the area boasts hiking trails, kayaking access points, charming local eateries, breweries, and places to relax and recharge along the way.
For your next getaway, visit the Olde English District and discover South Carolina’s piedmont region.
With various water access points, agri-tourism destinations and scenic state parks, Chester County offers both outdoor adventure and relaxation opportunities.
For water-bound excursions, visitors often gravitate to the Catawba River and Landsford Canal State Park , which is stretched along the river. Pro tip: During May and June, rocky shoals spider lilies bloom along the water, creating breathtaking views.
Chester State Park , on the other side of the county, is also a popular destination for hiking, picnicking, camping and fishing. Spend the night in a living blues museum, Inn Upon Moon River Plantation Blues Bed & Breakfast , for a unique and charming destination. Be sure to stop by local farms, like Cotton Hills Farm , for u-pick produce and local goods before heading home.
Within this rural county, Downtown Cheraw is a quaint and cozy stop for dining, shopping, and learning the area’s history, including the life of hometown jazz king, Dizzy Gillespie . Take a swing at Cheraw State Park’s 18-hole championship golf course, or take the more adventurous route by mountain biking or hiking the state park’s trails.
Sand Hills State Forest and the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge are also perennial favorites. Nearby Pageland supports a strong antique district and is nationally recognized for hosting a sweet summer festival: The Pageland Watermelon Festival.
Home to the South Carolina Railroad Museum , Fairfield County is the gateway to Lake Monticello and the 238-acre Lake Wateree State Park , which sports camping sites, an on-site tackle shop, and a loop trail for hiking.
For thrill-seekers, Carolina Adventure World’s wooded acres are the perfect landscape for ATV, UTV and dirt bike riding.
Fairfield County also celebrates the quiet charms of small-town living. Don’t miss Laura’s Tea Room and Ruff Hardware in Ridgeway and the longest continuously running clock in the U.S. in Winnsboro.
Kershaw County is comprised of several quaint towns, including Boykin, where the official dog of South Carolina was first bred.
Camden, the county seat, is where a vibrant downtown attracts foodies, antiquers, equine enthusiasts (the Carolina Cup is held in Camden annually) and history buffs alike. Charming inns, flavorful restaurants like Salud Mexican Kitchen & Tequila Lounge , grist mills, and historic sites, such as the Revolutionary War Visitor Center and the Historic Camden campus, invite a leisurely visit.
Amazing varieties of birds make their homes in cypress stands along Lake Wateree, and Goodale State Park offers an excellent opportunity to view native flora and fauna.
With a rich arts community, Lancaster County is home to many galleries, including Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio . The Native American Studies Center also has an impressive collection of Catawba Indian pottery.
Grab a coffee or pastry from Daily Grind Coffee Bar before embarking on a leisurely stroll along the Lindsay Pettus Greenway , which intersects nature and public art. Or discover one of the largest granite flat rocks east of the Mississippi at Forty Acre Rock Heritage Preserve . History buffs will not want to miss Andrew Jackson State Park , which tells the story of the president’s boyhood and South Carolina’s storied role in the fight for American independence.
Officially in South Carolina’s “Upstate,”
Union County starts to hint at the foothills that rise to vistas. A visit to Union is not complete without a tour of downtown civil rights era historic sites — nor without a stop at Midway BBQ.
For the history buffs, the Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site in Sumter National Forest tells the story of many generations of plantation dwellers.
Consider making a reservation at the Piedmont Physic Garden , a botanical garden that is home to a collection of ornamental plants and plants with a medicinal history. Adrenaline junkies, on the other hand, may want to hit the Union County Dragway.
Just south of Charlotte, York County is a vibrant area, packed with outdoor recreation opportunities, local restaurants and buzzing breweries. It is home to Lake Wylie and Kings Mountain State Park (right around the corner from Kings Mountain National Military Park ), which commemorates a key Revolutionary War battle.
The Anne Springs Close Greenway is a natural escape, perfect for an afternoon picnic or hike. Grab a bite in Old Town Rock Hill at Kounter , Old Town Kitchen & Cocktails, or Flipside Restaurant , and be sure to check out some of the nearby watering holes such as Slow Play Brewing and Legal Remedy Brewing .
YOU DON’T NEED A PASSPORT TO ESCAPE OR ROMP AROUND NATURE’S PLAYGROUNDS.
The Olde English District has something for everyone, from the leisurely walker to the avid hiker to the thrill-seeker. Take a swing at one of the many golf courses. Or pick fresh produce at one of the region’s u-pick farms. With more state parks per capita than just about anywhere, the Olde English District presents a variety of scenic spots to hike, bike, climb or even snooze in a hammock.

Freshly picked produce is incomparable to what you can find in the grocery store. From peaches to pumpkins, tomatoes to strawberries — each season brings a new flavor. At some farms, you can even pick your own flower arrangements for a perfect farm-to-table setting. Just be sure to see what’s in season before you visit!

This is a great opportunity to view wildlife and migratory birds. If I'm looking for more activity during a hike, I take advantage of the park's 9-hole and 18-hole disc golf courses. By utilizing these courses, I can take a hike and practice my disc throws at the same time."

In 1961, students from Friendship Junior College bravely staged a sit-in at the segregated McCrory’s Five and Dime. The men were denied service and sentenced to serve 30 days in jail or to pay a fine. One chose the fine, while the other nine—now known as "The Friendship 9" —went on to serve 30 days in jail. Their bravery and unfair treatment attracted national attention and played a part in the Civil Rights movement. Their protest was known as “Jail, No Bail” and was replicated many times during the Civil Rights Era. This space in Rock Hill now pays tribute to those who fought for their freedom.
This monument marks where the George Fish School once was. From 1926 through 1968, The George Fish School was the school for Black students in Fort Mill before being integrated and called Fort Mill Jr. High. Though the building was sold in 1986 and later demolished, the monument still stands.

Lancaster’s rich arts scene shines through its many murals. On the corner of West Arch and South Main Street in Downtown Lancaster is the Forward Together mural. It was painted by Ralph Waldrop in the 1970s and later restored by Russ Petty. In 2019, See Yourself in Lancaster , was also painted by Russ Petty and volunteers of the community. Several others were painted or restored, bringing even more color to Lancaster’s downtown streets.
Lively murals add pops of color to Rock Hill’s downtown — many of which are within a onemile radius. The Mural Mile is an initiative in the city’s downtown that strives to connect local artists with the community through a variety of thoughtful artwork. Murals include No Room For Racism (130 W. A 1904-built home in Chester, South Carolina, weaves blues, jazz and gospel into a unique visitor stay. The Inn Upon Moon River Plantation Blues Bed & Breakfast is more than lodging. It’s an unforgettable destination that is good for the mind, body and soul.
Innkeepers David and Elizabeth Claytor showcase their passion for the blues throughout the historic house, with art and collectibles lining the 10-foot walls. “Acquiring the artwork at the Inn was not an overnight task,” Elizabeth says. “We have always appreciated art and the blues, and over the years, we realized that we had a collection.”
Elizabeth grew up in Louisiana, where blues and gospel music were practically woven into her DNA. Dave was introduced to the blues by his paternal grandfather while growing up in upstate New York. He cherishes the memories of listening to the sounds of old blues records with his grandpa — a collection he now treasures. His mother’s side of the family also has deep roots in the blues, as his cousin is the iconic Diana Ross.
The couple’s passion for the blues came together when they met in Tallahassee, Florida, where they revived an abandoned historic juke joint and created it into an internationally acclaimed authentic blues tourist attraction known as “Dave’s CC Club.”
The couple now spends time greeting and hosting guests in their charming bed and breakfast. The inn they created is a unique place where heartfelt music, Southern hospitality and memorable moments intertwine. “We especially love having breakfast with our guests and entertaining them with stories and live music,” Elizabeth adds.
