There are no major highways running through town and being far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city is one of the reasons people love it here. Although Wimberley is less than thirty minutes from San Marcos and less than an hour from Austin, it is tucked away in the rolling hills of the scenic Texas Hill Country. Cross the Blanco River and Cypress Creek and you’ll feel that you’ve escaped from city life altogether.
Whether you’re a first-timer or a life-timer, you are invited to a warm welcome at the Wimberley Valley Visitor Center. A wealth of information is available at the center, including places to see, things to do, where to eat and where to stay. The art-filled lobby is ready and waiting for visitors any day of the week except Sunday. You’ll find us at 14100 Ranch Road 12 in Wimberley. We are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The best way to experience a new place, the saying goes, is to eat and drink your way across its landscape. A freshly mixed drink, barbecue made like it used to be, and meals made with love can tell you a lot about the people who call this little town home. If visitors want nothing more than to relax over a delicious drink under tall trees, catch up with someone special over a memorable meal, or enjoy a favorite snack made by friendly locals, Wimberley can show you how. Leaving the city doesn’t mean having to relinquish sophisticated menus or fresh-off-the-ranch ingredients. Wimberley’s fine restaurants offer that too.
Kelly’s BBQ
Across from Ace Hardware in the same area of shops where you will find the Wash Day laundromat on RR12, is Kelly’s Hill Country BBQ food truck. Don’t let the food truck imply that Kelly is a newcomer to the barbecue game. He’s not In 2010, Kelly was a middle school social studies teacher who became hooked on competing in BBQ competitions. After a few years of competing and winning, he decided to cater on a large scale. Everyone loved his BBQ, but the thing is, they wanted it more often. Kelly, along with his wife Melody, began selling BBQ on Saturdays out of a food trailer under the famous Creekside Cookers name. In 2016, Kelly quit his 20year teaching career to pursue his love of BBQ and open Creekside full-time — by popular demand. In 2020, Kelly’s handsome black food truck took its place in the shopping area across from Ace Hardware and now, his authentic Central Texas BBQ barbecue is an important part of the Wimberley landscape. It is the go-to place for pit smoked, low-and-slow brisket, ribs, turkey, pulled pork, sausage and pork belly. On the menu are all of the traditional fixin’s and fresh seasonal sides when they are available. The locals line up daily to get their barbecue from Kelly’s and catch up on socializing while they’re at it. You see, Kelly is not only respected for expertly carrying on the barbecue tradition in this part of Texas, but he’s been there for Wimberley when the community needed a helping hand. In every way, Kelly’s our man.

Just off the Wimberley Square near the Cypress Creek bridge in the section of shops called The Quarter, the inviting Creekhouse Kitchen & Bar sits under towering old cypress trees. With superb views over the creek from their upper decks and down below where live music abounds, the Creekhouse Kitchen & Bar is one of the best places in Wimberley to unwind, relax and connect with someone special. In addition to the views, the Creekhouse offers Texas fare with a sophisticated twist, with new flavors for the modern palate and the vegetarian. Artfully crafted cocktails, Texas-brewed beers and fine wines make a trip to Cypress Creek a memorable experience. Overlooking Cypress Creek and shaded by the most beautiful cypress trees, Creekhouse serves New American fare with a clean and sustainable twist. Enjoy live music from the green space on the weekends while you sip on a Wimberley Way and take in the beautiful scenery. Reservations available but everyone is always welcome to walk in!
Schoolyard Dogs
On the fourth of July, the Schoolyard Dogs food truck officially launched their business, taking up residence next to Wimberley Shaved Ice at the corner of Rhodes Lane and RM2325. For very reasonable prices, hungry customers can purchase hot dogs with all the trimmings including homemade chili and spicy sweet relish, as well as Frito pies. Also on the menu are vegetarian hot dogs, vegetarian chili, chips, cookies and soft drinks. Behind the inauguration of the colorful food truck is a multilayered project with the aim to provide training, employment and recreation for neurodivergent and disabled adults in the Wimberley Valley. Woodcreek residents Mickey Perkins and her husband Roger Smith are the architects of the Schoolyard vision. Both of their sons, Jasper and Rufus, were diagnosed with autism at an early age. Later on, Jasper was found to have an intellectual disability in addition to autism. Jasper and Rufus graduated from Wimberley High School and aged out of the school district’s 18- to 22-year-old special services program. The parents asked themselves, “Now what?” They knew that there were very few resources for disabled adults in just about every area of life — housing, recreation, life skills — and particularly in job training and employment. While searching for answers, Mickey dreamed one night of converting a school bus into a food truck that would sell one of Jasper’s favorite foods, hot dogs. The dream showed how the boys could train, work and develop social outlets. Not ones to second guess her dream, Mickey and Roger pursued the idea and through fundraising and donations, acquired a Special Education school bus in 2020. By Christmas 2023, the school bus conversion was complete. The vision of Schoolyard Dogs expanded from a project to help their sons to the creation of something larger that would benefit others. Their ultimate goal became Schoolyard Services, a nonprofit with the aim of creating a community center for neurodivergent adults living in the Wimberley area. As the nonprofit scales up to realize the vision of Schoolyard Services, employees at Schoolyard Dogs will soon receive their first paycheck. Twenty-six-year-old Noah Dill, Schoolyard Dogs’ first employee, is one of them. Both he and Rufus Perkins-Smith have been learning to greet customers, take orders, and in Noah’s case, attract customers by dressing in a hot dog costume. This will be the first paychecks they’ve ever received.

There’s no doubt about it, the Hill Country has turned into the Napa Valley of Texas. Wineries are abundant throughout the region and Wimberley is home to a few of its own.
DRIFTWOOD ESTATE WINERY
Driftwood Estate Winery and Vineyard claims they have a “milliondollar view” and visitors agree. Located on Elder Hill Road in Driftwood and just a few miles from Wimberley, the winery’s tasting room and grounds overlook a sweeping view of the Texas Hill Country. Family owned, they produce award-winning wines and even received Reader’s Choice for Best Texas Winery by Prime Living Magazine. In addition to the wines and the views, they now have a full menu of food options on weekends, served up by Driftwood Bistro.
DUCHMAN WINERY
Duchman Family Winery was founded in 2004 by Drs. Lisa andStan Duchman in a quest to bring world-class winemaking to CentralTexas and the Texas Hill Country. It seems they have achieved their goal.The winery won two gold medals at the 2019 San Francisco ChronicleWine Competition, the largest competition for American wines, for their2014 Agliancio and their 2016 Vermentino. Beyond the amazing wine, Duchman’s is also one of the top wine destinations in Texas because of its beautiful Italian inspired grounds and architecture.

Just a few miles from Wimberley proper, the Wimberley Valley Winery is a treat for all the senses. Located on Lone Man Mountain Road, the winery is a great place “to sit and watch the world go by,” according to owner Dean Valentine. Visitors can sip their wine and stroll the grounds while Texas Longhorn cattle and donkeys graze in the pasture. Several decks and outdoor seating options are available, in addition to some indoor seating. Fruit wines such as raspberry, blueberry and cherry are also produced and are tasty but they also offer a wide range of wines, from sweet to dry.

At first glance, finding Ace Hardware featured in our shopping section might seem a bit unusual for first time visitors. But the scope of this longtime Wimberley icon will astonish you. Yes, they have all of the practical items you need to make your visit here a success, but they also have stylish apparel, gifts, sporting goods, candles, housewares, greeting cards, toys, top of the line grills and grilling accessories. They even have a snack bar where you can munch on popcorn while you shop. One of the best parts of shopping at Ace are the friendly knowledgeable people who can solve whatever problem arises. If you’re lucky, you might find a Wimberley Texan shirt or tshirt to take home as a souvenir.

Felix T. Jack Haberdashery
The Felix T. Jack Haberdashery is all about quality. The handsome, 2,200 square foot, twostory building opened in November 2021 to carry artisan-made clothing and heritage goods made responsibly in the USA. Known as “slow fashion,” the approach considers the processes and resources required to make outstanding clothing. Proponents focus on timeless, highquality designs over trendy pieces.
Inside, you’ll find denim lines from Glenn’s Denim, Left Field, Taylor Stitch, Tellason, Jack Donnelly, Ginew and other small manufacturers who are all about the quality of the material, how it is sourced, and how it is made.
In addition to denims of various weights, you’ll find Solid State brand t-shirts made from organic cotton, waxed canvas jackets, Oxford shirts from Wythe New York, lightweight gauze shirts, West Major western shirts and other quality shirts, flannels and chambrays meant to be worked in and valued over time. Eighty-five percent of the clothing you’ll find in this haberdashery are small batch goods made in the U.S.
Their Victory Sportswear line of classic athletic sneakers are made by a third generation cobbler in Massachusetts. Victory’s custom and non-custom shoes are made to last for years.
“We want to see American clothing makers return. That’s why we are so passionate about supporting these small manufacturers who want to hold on to quality and heritage as much as we do,” said co-owner Tolleson. “The clothes we sell adhere to ethical, responsible practices that I’m proud to get behind.”

Visitors will find the Wimberley location of Junk Gypsy, the phenomenon that began its journey in Round Top, Tx, by the vintage pink Volkswagon bug parked outside next to a giant “Yellow Rose of Texas” boot. Inside you’ll find their brand of chic for you, your home and your lifestyle. You’ll love their selection of boots, hats, apparel, jewelry, accessories, candles, scents, bedding and decor. With their mix of new, vintage and eclectic treasures, shoppers will get plenty of the freedom-loving JG spirit, too.
Owners Amie and Jolie Sikes have been dreaming about opening a store in Wimberley for more than 20 years. “This town is more than just another place to put a store for us, it’s part of the very fiber of who we are.” Self-made entrepreneurs, the Sikes sisters have been featured in multiple television episodes of HGTV and QVC, and as many magazine articles for their eclectic, Texas-flavored Bohemian Farmhouse style.

Everywhere you look in Wimberley you can see the town’s artistic vibe. Whether it’s the music everywhere, the live theater, the galleries, the boots and murals, or the haiku stamped onto sidewalks on Old Kyle Rd., many artists call this place home. Maybe the town’s natural assets inspire them. Maybe it’s the pace of a small town, the moments dreaming by Cypress Creek, or the hours swimming at Blue Hole, that allows artists the open-ended space to create something new. Whatever the magic, Wimberley will delight the visitor in a thousand memorable ways.
“BOOTIFUL” WIMBERLEY
More than 50 oversized, eye-catching boots greet visitors when they visit Wimberley. More than six or seven feet tall, the fiberglass boots are painted by artists who vie for the opportunity to represent the organizations who sponsor them. One of the newest ones was created for the Lions Club whose members organize Market Days, the large outdoor market held the first Saturday of each month. A great way to orient oneself to Wimberley is to get a map of the Boots and go exploring. Maps that show the locations of the Boot sculptures can be found at the Visitor and the Welcome Center, just off Wimberley Square on Oak Park.

WimberleyArts.org is the guiding force behind many of Wimberley’s art and culture programs. Working with the city council, the dynamic group created a vision for Wimberley that included a cultural district that was designated by the Texas Commission on the Arts and greatly expanded in 2024. Among other things, the organization created the Music Calendar seen each week in the Wimberley View newspaper that lists the date and locations where musicians are playing all over the area. They also created the Bootiful Wimberley project, the gallery Art Crawl, the Stars Over Wimberley Concert Series, the StoryFest storytelling event, Hill Country Haiku, gorgeous public murals, and the town’s designation as both a Music and Film Friendly City from the state of Texas. Their efforts have been so important that the City of Wimberley recently awarded them the rare Community Excellence Award.

WIMBERLEY PLAYERS
The award-winning Wimberley Players has been an enduring asset to the town of Wimberley for the past 45 years. The live theatre offers five productions each year — a musical, a comedy, a drama, a holiday play and something that introduces theatre lovers to new, more challenging material. The theatre attracts professional and semi-professional actors, directors, and designers, as well as theatre students from universities and talented actors and performers from the area. Because of its intimate size, it is a perfect listening room for performing musicians, too. The place to be on December 30, is in the audience of “The Hill Country Home Companion.” This original radio program is performed on stage with skits written by talented Wimberley writers interspersed with live music, sound effects and commercials that will tickle your funny bone. The skits poke fun at the Wimberley that only insiders know. This Fall, their holiday program is none other than the heartwarming “Miracle on 34th Street.” Located a few blocks from the Square on Old Kyle Road, the theatre offers a bar and ample parking.

This Wimberley icon is home to “Shakespeare Under the Stars” and boasts a large amphitheater that seats 400, an indoor studio theatre, and an entertainment stage for smaller productions on its 12-acre grounds. In the winter months, their Trail of Lights is a must-see wonderland for kids of all ages. The 2024 Trail of Lights runs every night from November 30 to December 26. From Sunday to Thursday, the Trail of Lights is open to the public from 6 to 9 p.m. On Saturday and Sunday it stays open until 10 p.m.

Local history at the Wimberley Valley Museum
As settlements go, the Wimberley Valley is a recent one. W. C. Winters, a wounded veteran from the Battle of San Jacinto and well-known furniture maker, came to the area looking for a place to settle his family. He established a sawmill on a nearby creek and founded the Glendale trading post in 1853.
That post eventually became the town of Wimberley.
Pleasant Wimberley, the city’s namesake, was one of numerous owners of the mill. The original Winters-Wimberley House now the home of the Wimberley Valley Museum. His son’s home, called the Wimberley-Hughes House, is right next door. It was built for an age-old reason— Zach’s wife did not fancy living with her mother-in-law.
A lovely limestone home with 18-inch thick walls, museum succinctly portrays the area’s rich history with early photographs on the shades and artifacts that help tell the town’s story. A recently completed mural behind the museum by artist Theresa Vincent, depicts the town’s development in the late 18and 1900s.

When it comes to Wimberley, nature comes first. Woven throughout the town are parks, refuges and natural areas that offer swimming, birdwatching, hiking and recreation that puts Mother Nature front and center. Some are pocket sized, others are straight up, and the largest of them stretches more than 125 acres. Visitors and locals alike embrace the natural world that Wimberley offers for the opportunity to step back, clear minds, and find the kind of balance that only nature can provide.
Six local parks show off the Hill Country
BLUE HOLE REGIONAL PARK
Just a few blocks from the Wimberley Square off of Old Kyle Road, is Blue Hole Regional Park. Saved from encroaching development by passionate officeholders and locals, the 126acre park was acquired by the city in 2005. At its heart is the natural spring-fed Cypress Creek. Lined by lofty cypress trees, the swimming hole is a classic Mother Nature icon — shaded, chilly, and perfectly sized for swimming, floating and cooling off. Beyond the water are accessible open spaces, picnic areas, BBQ grills, playscape, a sand volleyball court, a basketball court, soccer fields, an amphitheater, community pavilion, more than 4 miles of hiking trails, and plenty of planned activities. Reservations are required from swimming.
JACOB’S WELL NATURAL AREA
Widely considered an ecological wonder, Jacob’s Well is part of a recharge zone that is at the center of a natural artesian spring that forms the headwaters of Cypress Creek. This Hays County park has drawn swimmers for centuries who treasure the clear, 68 degree water, the rare view into a natural artesian well and the surrounding rock ledges that lend themselves perfectly to warming up after a swim. Although swimming traditionally ends in September at the park, the park trails and other natural features are open yearround. Just 4.5 miles from the Wimberley Square, the drive is a brief 10 minute trip that leads into the Hill Country.
OLD BALDY
For breathtaking views of the Wimberley Valley, the climb to Old Baldy Park is a must for people wanting a wide open view of the valley and the Texas Hill Country. Not only are the views breathtaking, the climb can be too. Two hundred and 18 steps lead you upwards to the 4.3 acre park in this neighborhood, just 2.5 miles from the Wimberley Square off FM2325. Parking is very limited. Gently coexisting with the neighborhood is key.
Tucked behind the Wimberley Community Center’s parking lot is the peaceful Patsy Glen Wildlife Refuge, a 1.8 acre haven for local and migrating birds, wildlife, insects and native plants. Each season, residents await the return of birds who choose the refuge to rest from their long journeys. Wimberley is fortunate to be a part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife designated “Wimberley Loop,” which brings bird watchers to the trail that includes Blue Hole, the Red Corral Ranch, Jacob’s Well, Charro Ranch Park and Blanco State Park.
MARTHA KNIES COMMUNITY PARK & CYPRESS CREEK NATURE TRAIL
At the head of the Cypress Creek Nature Trail is the Martha Knies Community Park. Located next to the Cypress Creek bridge, it boasts a covered picnic pavilion, restrooms, a children’s playground, a water feature and a welcome respite from the nearby Wimberley Square. From the park, the trail follows along the banks of Cypress Creek until it reaches Blue Hole Regional Park where it continues on to total 7.2 acres of natural beauty.
OAK PARK & WELCOME CENTER
Adjacent to the Wimberley Square, this small community complex provides a comfortable space to land for visitors and locals in search of parking, information, restrooms, and a place to sit and relax. A city directory, high-quality artificial turf, several outdoor games, bistrostyle seating and a handsome mural all contribute to this well-thought-out mini-oasis. Designed and maintained by Wimberley’s Parks & Recreation Department, Oak Park’s map provides locations of the more than 50 “Bootiful” public art boot sculptures that distinguish the town.
