From the Chamber Welcome WELCOME TO SANTA FE, TEXAS! WE HOPE YOU WILL FIND EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY WITHIN THIS GUIDE. Some would say that this is more than a community – we’re really a family. You’ll notice in Santa Fe that neighbors watch out for each other and know the people on their street. People come together to cheer the high school athletics teams and to celebrate a rich local heritage at local festivals. They support each other through both good times and challenging times and have created a community built on a strong foundation of hospitality and respect. The people of Santa Fe enjoy the benefits of living in a smaller community while taking advantage of a large metropolis and the beautiful Gulf Coast beaches nearby. You’ll find a low cost of living and a low crime rate that makes you feel even safer at home. Walk down the street and you’ll be greeted with a warm hello and a smile, even by those you may not yet know. With terrific neighborhoods and a great school system, Santa Fe is the perfect place to raise your family. Children can be seen playing in the city parks and riding their bikes through neighborhoods – activities that are not always safe in larger cities. Recreation programs that keep children involved year round with educational and sporting events, and the beautiful Gulf Coast weather provides plenty of sunshine for outdoor activities. It’s great to be a kid in Santa Fe! Come see why so many people choose to call Santa Fe home!

Location & Community Profile SANTA FE IS SITUATED IN A BEAUTIFUL PORTION OF TEXAS, WITH THE COAST JUST A SHORT DRIVE AWAY. PEOPLE LIVING IN THE COMMUNITY CAN TELL YOU MANY GREAT THINGS ABOUT THEIR HOME, BUT THERE’S ONE COMPLIMENT YOU’LL HEAR TIME AND AGAIN: SANTA FE IS A GREAT PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE A FAMILY. The prime location, low cost of living, friendly neighborhoods and very low crime rate all add to the beauty of Santa Fe life. Located on the Gulf Coast Santa Fe has all the conveniences of big city life with the charms of a smaller community. Settled in the late 1800’s, the cities of Arcadia and Alta Loma later merged to form the City of Santa Fe. Santa Fe was named after the Santa Fe railroad, which was being constructed in the area at the time. Early growth in the area was slow for the first 80 years, but the city thrives today. Santa Fe was officially incorporated in 1978. Santa Fe is centrally located between Houston and Galveston, and it’s just a short drive to either city, with Houston only 30 miles northwest and Galveston 20 miles southeast. Santa Fe is part of Galveston County and encompasses a land area of 17 square miles. The cities of Alvin, Dickinson, Hitchcock, League City, La Marque and Texas City are all within 10 miles of Santa Fe. Santa Fe’s residents come from all walks of life but have one thing in common: love of the area. With just over 12, 000 residents, neighbors still know their neighbors and take the time to watch out for each other. The average age of Santa Fe residents is 36 years old, but there’s a good mix of seniors, children, teenagers and middle-aged adults. Residents value what each age group has to offer the community and know that there is rich history and a lot to learn from each generation. While some of the residents of Santa Fe have chosen to work in Houston or Galveston or in one of the many petrochemical plants dotting the Texas landscape, they have also decided that the best choice for living and raising a family is Santa Fe. They know all that this small town with lots of space has to offer, especially the good schools and low crime rate. New residents love this quiet, warm community and are surprised at how friendly our town can be. It doesn’t take long before you feel like Santa Fe is a part of you and you never want to leave. Take a step back from the busy city life and let Santa Fe help you experience what living is really all about. A three-bedroom home with full landscaping on 1-acre parcel sells for around $190,000, with prices depending on the extra amenities the home offers. However, there are also starter homes for less than $90,000 and luxury homes with plenty of acreage for up to $500,000. Many homes in the area are 10 years old or newer but, if you fancy yourself a weekend warrior, there are also fixer-upper’s on the market waiting for the right person to come in, see their potential and give them a bit of love. Business & Industry SANTA FE IS CHANGING FROM A SMALL COMMUNITY CONTENT WITH EXISTING BUSINESSES TO ONE THAT IS ACTIVELY WORKING TO ATTRACT NEW BUSINESSES TO THE AREA. A PRIME LOCATION BETWEEN HOUSTON AND GALVESTON IS JUST ONE OF THE MANY BENEFITS SANTA FE HAS TO OFFER LARGE COMPANIES AND SMALLER FRANCHISES. People are moving to Santa Fe in droves to escape big-city life, but with the forethought of city planners, Santa Fe’s growth is planned with the future in mind. The city will continue to have the hometown feel it is famous for yet will still be a viable option for businesses looking for new location to either expand or relocate. The Santa Fe Economic Development Corporation (EDC) will soon complete a four-phase project to entice more business to the area. In 2002, the EDC identified four projects in the City of Santa Fe that would increase the attractiveness of Santa Fe to businesses. Focusing mainly on the infrastructure in Santa Fe, the EDC realized that the potential economic benefits of infrastructure improvements would affect the entire community for the better. The result was a massive infrastructure improvement project to expand sewer and water lines to the main thoroughfare, making it more appealing to businesses wishing to locate next to a major transportation artery for the city. While the majority of residents in Santa Fe work outside of the community – mainly in the petrochemical plants in surrounding communities – there are several employment opportunities for residents within Santa Fe as well. With the growth the area is currently experiencing, more and more businesses are seeing the benefits of locating in Santa Fe. The cost of doing business in Santa Fe is comparable to the national average, and the skill set of residents in Santa Fe is varied, making it easy to find quality employees in several fields. The largest employer in Santa Fe is the Santa Fe Independent School District, with over 600 employees. Arlan’s Market, a local grocery store, employs 50 people from the area, and the City of Santa Fe employs 50. The area is home to several manufacturing companies such as Southern California Valve, one of the largest valve manufacturers on the West Coast. The Santa Fe facility employs over 40 people and their reputation is unparalleled for producing high quality commodity and specialty valves. Santa Fe is also home to Haak Vineyards & Winery. What started as a gift of two concord grapevines on their 10th wedding anniversary, Haak Vineyards & Winery has grown to be a world renowned and award winning winery that employs over 25 people. In addition to these employers, there are several small businesses keeping the residents of Santa Fe employed within their own community. While Santa Fe is not yet home to a large business employing thousands of people, the community is gearing up for increased growth in the business sector. With the influx of residents Santa Fe is experiencing, businesses are soon to follow, and Santa Fe will be ready, with a healthy infrastructure, strong support by local agencies and a great work force trained in a variety of fields.

Worship THE COMMUNITY OF SANTA FE IS SPIRITUALLY DIVERSE, WITH ALL OF THE MAJOR CHRISTIAN DENOMINATIONS REPRESENTED. THERE ARE ASSEMBLY OF GOD, BAPTIST, CATHOLIC, CHURCH OF CHRIST, LUTHERAN, METHODIST, PENTECOSTAL AND PRESBYTERIAN CONGREGATIONS. To the residents of Santa Fe, worship is much more than just showing up for Catholic church on Sunday, however. They take the meaning of religion to heart and try to live their beliefs each day, making the area a friendly and inviting place to call home. In addition to the regular worship services held on Sunday, there are several activities throughout the week that the community may take part in to strengthen their faith even more. Bible study groups are prevalent, and there are specialized groups for age or gender available as well. There are also many ways for the youth of Santa Fe to become involved in the religious community, from weekly activities to bible study groups formed especially with young people in mind. The religious community often comes together for cooperative worship services and service projects. One such event is the Community Thanksgiving Service. Several congregations of different denominations come together to make this special service something people look forward to each year. There are other activities throughout the year that the different denominations contribute to in their individual ways. The religious community works together to build a strong Christian foundation in Santa Fe. The Chaplain Ministry is one example of service to the community. Comprised of 12 different churches, the ministry works together with Santa Fe Police Department to provide chaplain services to victims of violent crimes. This invaluable service has assisted CONTINUED PG 32

FROM PG 13 great match when the Houston Hotshots take the field. Collegiate sporting events are also in plentiful supply a short drive from Santa Fe. Cheer on your favorite team at one of the many colleges and universities throughout the area, including Rice University, the University of Houston and Texas Southern University. Bring your family and enjoy a day at the game while supporting the local talent. In addition to professional and collegiate sporting events, there are many local opportunities to get you out of the cheering section and onto the field. Put a team together and enjoy the camaraderie a good game can bring. If playing isn’t your thing, volunteer to couch one of the local youth teams. Any way you look at it, there’s a way to get involved in Santa Fe. Come enjoy all that Santa Fe has to offer!

Entertainment & Events SPECIAL EVENTS HAPPEN THROUGHOUT THE YEAR IN SANTA FE AREA GIVING YOU PLENTY TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND ENJOY. SANTA FE’S CONVENIENT LOCATION GIVES RESIDENTS THE ADDED BENEFIT OF ENJOYING THE MANY FESTIVALS IN THE LARGER CITIES OF GALVESTON AND HOUSTON, WHILE STILL BEING IMMERSED IN THE COMMUNITY LIFE FOUND ONLY IN SMALLER CITIES. From the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo to the Heritage Festival, the community’s festivals and events are unique and unparalleled. Residents of Santa Fe know how to enjoy life and have a good time celebrating their heritage. The Galveston County Fair and Rodeo is held each April at Jack Brooks Park. The park is located just off of highway 6 in Hitchcock, a short 2-mile drive from Santa Fe. There is plenty of community involvement at the fair and, regardless of your interest, there is something for you to get involved with, too. The youth of the county work hard throughout the year raising livestock to enter in the 4-H Livestock Show. Teaching the values of hard work, responsibility and healthy competition is a great benefit of the livestock show. Seeing the joy on the face of a young blue ribbon winner makes the event a joy for everyone and makes it easy to know that all their hard work was worth it. Another event not to be missed at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo is the annual Barbeque Cook-Off. Just one whiff and you’ll be hooked, as the delectable scents waft through the air and draw you in. Each year both veterans and newcomers put their barbeque skills to the test in quest of the coveted blue ribbon. Come see the barbeque masters at work and enjoy a taste of a good old Texas barbeque. Of course, a county fair and rodeo would not be complete without a first class rodeo and bull riding and that’s exactly what you’ll find at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over the United States come to compete and show their athletic ability at the rodeo each year. Mix the cowboys and cowgirls with top-quality rodeo livestock, and you have a rodeo that you won’t soon forget. There are contests to enter throughout the fair for every age group, including Pee Wee Pig Show for the little tykes. Booths filled with vendors selling their wares and arts and craft shows to browse through keep people of all interests busy. Come see what all the fuss is about and enjoy nine days packed with the great food, great entertainment, great friends and great fun at the Galveston County Fair and Rodeo. CONTINUED PG 32

FROM PG 5 Tuesday of the month in the City Council Chamber of City Hall at 7 p.m. Potential electricians in Santa Fe area must first be licensed by the city. This is done through the Electrical Board, a five-member board composed of three appointed members who are master electricians and two ex-officio members (the city manager, or a designee, and the fire marshal). Meetings are held as necessary. Call City Hall at (409) 925-6412 for more details. Ensuring the residents of Santa Fe have recreational opportunities and aesthetic places to enjoy is the main mission of the Santa Fe Parks and Recreation Board. Seven City Council-Appointed members serve two year terms without compensation and work to meet needs of the residents. The Park and Recreation Board meets the fourth Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chamber of City Hall. The Mae S. Bruce Library Advisory Board has the future in mind. The nine-member board works to continually improve the current library and plans for the orderly growth to come in the future. Members serve two-year terms without compensation. The Santa Fe Community library opened its doors in September 1975. The library’s collection – mostly donated books – was housed in 400 square feet of an old World War II Army Barracks and was manned by volunteers. By 1982, the barracks could no longer house the growing library collection. A dedicated group of citizens established a Building Committee, and, with funds from community donations and grants from the Moody and Kempner Foundations, was able to purchase a 1,920 square foot metal portable building. This building was located across Highway 6 from the barracks on land leased from the Santa Fe ISD. Continuous growth in circulation, services, programs and the library collection over the next five years again made the need for a larger facility apparent. In 1987, a permanent 6,400-square-foot brick structure on 3 acres was presented to the City of Santa Fe by Mrs. Mae S. Bruce. The dedication plaque on the building state, “This building is my gift to Santa Fe area as a legacy to the people who have contributed so very much to my happiness and success in business.” The library collection was moved to the new site and renamed the Mae S. Bruce Public Library. The Mae S. Bruce Library is located at 13302 6th Street and Is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday from 12p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. City Hall, Fire Marshal, and the Building and Permit Department are located at 12002 Highway 6, which is open 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to Noon on Fridays. The Police Department and Municipal Court are located at 3650 FM 646 N. Fire and Rescue services for Santa Fe are under the direction of the Emergency Management Services District, with a volunteer fire department responding to calls.

FROM PG 18 Santa Fe Fest, sponsored by the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, Inc. is another event residents of Santa Fe look forward to every year. The Chamber’s largest event in Santa Fe, Santa Fe Fest is held at the Galveston County Fair Grounds and offers an Old Smokey and Crawfish Cook-Off, the Chamber’s annual car, bike & tractor show, live music and entertainment, arts and crafts booths, terrific food and drinks, games and events, loads of home town hospitality and great memories for all involved. The Heritage Festival, sponsored by Galveston County Constable Jimmy Fullen and the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce, Inc., was held for the first time in 1974. This fall festival is a great outing for the family and offers a Santa Fe historical display, music and entertainment, arts and crafts booths, fantastic food and drinks, the City’s Health & Safety Fair, games and events, a silent auction and raffle, and much more. Santa Fe is home to the Mark Kilroy Foundation, which puts together several unique events throughout the year. Each year the foundation hosts an annual dinner/ dance fundraiser to raise the necessary money for yearly programs. The Mark Kilroy Foundation S.A.F.E. program offers free summer programs to area youth each year. The four-week program consists of four weeklong camps with different themes. The camps are designed to keep the youth of Santa Fe drug-free. The foundation also hosts free golf and tennis clinics throughout the summer months for junior and senior high school youth. For more information of Mark Kilroy Foundation events, please call 409-925-7771.

“Together, the religious community of Santa Fe is making a difference in people’s lives.” FROM PG 14 victims in taking the first step to recovery. Churches in the area also offer several specific training classes to help the residents of the community with challenges they may be facing. The Senior Adult Ministry is one such program, targeting the specific health needs of the elderly population in Santa Fe. Together, the religious community of Santa Fe is making a difference in people’s lives. The low crime rate and friendly atmosphere in the community are just two indicators that the people in the area make worship an integral part of their lives. People know their neighbors and their congregations. They know the needs of the community and work to fulfill those needs with the help of their church and others. The area’s churches are full not only on Sundays, but throughout the week, as community members come together to socialize, worship and serve. There is a congregation waiting to welcome you into the fold today!

Thanks for Visiting WHILE THE BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO SANTA FE CAN GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY, OUR VALUES, OUR STRENGTHS AND OUR FUTURE, IT CAN’T REPLACE A PERSONAL VISIT. IT IS ONLY WHEN YOU COME TO OUR CITY, STROLL ALONG ITS STREETS AND MEET ITS PEOPLE THAT YOU CAN REALLY COME TO APPRECIATE ALL THAT WE ARE AND ALL THAT WE HAVE TO OFFER YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND YOUR BUSINESS. This growing Texas community situated on the beautiful Gulf Coast is one of history, heritage and tradition. This has given Santa Fe a strong foundation on which to build its future, a future in which growth and progress are anchored with respect for the values of a small family community. The people of Santa Fe are proud of and welcome the rapid growth we have experienced in recent years; yet we and our leaders work hard to ensure that this growth does not take away from all that makes Santa Fe great for families. We work hard every day to ensure that our children are educated and prepared for the world of the 21st Century; yet we also work equally hard to ensure that their home town is one of safety, security and joy. We embrace our growing attraction as a new home for business and industry; yet we never forget the small local businesses that always have, and will continue, to make us thrive. We strive to prepare our city for changes that growth and new technology bring, and we are excited about the opportunities they will offer. Yet we also celebrate our heritage as friends and neighbors and maintain the special spaces, events and memories that make small-town America such a unique treasure. Santa Fe is poised on the brink of great expansion and change. We are dedicated to keeping our city the welcoming place of warmth and beauty it has always been. We are confident that, as we develop, we will only become better. We invite you to join us on our great journey through the years ahead.
