Now Enrolling Call for an application packet or schedule a tour of our campus! Accepting students from PK3 - 8th Grade 409-892-1755 Whew! We practically live in another world than we did when getting ready for the last issue. We took our hits during Harvey, but we’re well aware that thousands of you had it far worse. October will be a hybrid kind of month. There is a lot of cleanup work to be done, but at the same time our kids will be wanting to get back into a routine. Some of us will be replacing drywall during the day and ferrying kids to volleyball games or dance practice in the evening. This issue reflects these unusual times – some Hurricane Harvey aftermath articles and lots of options for getting your family out of the house and trying to create some positive memories. Hurricane Harvey Notable Mention This was a horrible time for Southeast Texas. Lives, homes, and vehicles were lost. It will be a long-time before many of us recover. Despite this, some things were handled extremely well. There are a few people, or categories, we’d like to recognize: • Fire Departments: Regional fire departments raised their profile in communities across Southeast Texas. They passed out water, milk, food, and cleaning supplies when availability was scarce from traditional sources.
• Entergy: In many areas, the power stayed on significantly longer than during previous storms. Entergy trucks were very visible in the hours leading up to Hurricane Harvey – and after the waters started to recede. Many of us were without power for less time than we have been in the past – and less time than we feared we would be during a storm of this magnitude. • Gas Stations: Despite fears of gas shortages, we were mostly able to get gas for our cars, boats, and generators. We heard of terrible price spikes in other regions, but here most gas stations kept prices within thirty to forty cents of pre-Harvey pricing.
Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

www.SETXFamily.com
• Good Neighbors: It is a disappointing reality that most of us just don’t know our neighbors as well as we once did. A storm like this brings out the best in many. To use our family as an example, we received a number of kind gestures. One neighbor fixed a burst pipe. Another came over and helped cut a tree off our roof. Neighbors let us wash clothes while our septic system was backed up. We shared hot meals cooked on a camp stove on our porch. To use other examples from around the neighborhood, people helped each other move furniture, cut out drywall, and get generators up and running. Parents of Type 1 Diabetes children helped each other get supplies. Neighbors baked bread for each other when nothing could be found on the shelves. • Guys with Boats: Boats can be toys. Boats can be tools. For many, during the hurricane, boats were life savers. They pulled people off of roofs, second story windows, and out of flooded homes. Most of the time, boats were provided by local guys. They gave of their time and put themselves in danger to rescue others. Some lost their own trucks and boats trying to get to where they could launch to render aid. Louisiana provided a “Cajun Navy” in as fine a gesture of across state lines good will as we are likely to ever see. We had our own navy to join them – a navy of bass fishermen, duck hunters, and red necks with hearts of gold.
This was a bad hurricane. It caught most of us off guard and it flooded many who thought they were safe. Many of us are getting the run around from our insurance companies. A lot of us will be out of our homes for weeks or months. Given all of that, we did want to take a moment to recognize those who met or exceeded our expectations. Thank you to all of the heroes, small and large, who made a bad situation better. Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Moms make the decision for over sixty percent of purchases for their family. Many of us have not been in the position of having to find contractors to rebuild our homes. The following are all contractors SETX Family team members either know personally or have used in our own homes. They will be respectful, courteous, and charge a fair price.
Sheffield Construction
Owner Keith Sheffield likes helping homeowners in his own community. He does a lot of work in Wildwood, Spurger, Silsbee, and around Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend. Right now he is assisting homeowners with drywall, tree and stump removal, and painting. Keith Sheffield (409) 656-1974 JKSheffield@SBCGlobal.net
GuardTech
Patrick Nichols has been meeting with local homeowners to help them with solutions for mold and bacteria removal. Their products safely clean your 2X4s and flooring and will protect your home for decades to come. Do some research – professional products protect you from mold infinitely better than those available to consumers. A bonus? GuardTech products will also protect you from the bugs that are seeking new places to live after being displaced by Hurricane Harvey. Patrick Nichols (409) 350-0444 Patrick@GuardTechPest.com

Innovative Air Solutions
Many in Orange and Beaumont know Robert and Mindie Currie from their community work with the Chamber, Mardi Gras, and helping out after storms – even though their home seems to get hammered in all of them. Innovative Air Solutions can help you maintain, repair, or replace your air conditioning system. They can also help you with special things like multi-climate control zones and Mitsubishi units that can run on a small generator during a power outage so you can sleep comfortably. Innovative Air Solutions is also the SETX leader in air quality – ask Robert’s team about the Reme Halo systems. They clean your air ducts from the inside protecting your family from black mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses. Robert has lost everything in one hurricane and a great deal in another, so he is sympathetic to the needs of our Southeast Texas families. Robert Currie (409) 233-7770 RCurrie@i-airsolutions.com
Mayes Wood Flooring
Scott Mayes is the go to resource for contractors who need to rehab wood flooring, for schools and churches putting in new gym floors, and for people looking for bathroom remodels and repairs that won’t leak. He can even take care of replacing your countertops. Whether you are looking for laminate, vinyl, carpet, tile, or hard wood Scott’s team is ready to assist you. Is it time to move? Robin Ballard can help. As a local mom and homeowner, she’s been through many of the same things you are facing now. She has a reputation with local Realtors and families for getting her clients approved for home loans efficiently and with great communication throughout the process. Robin Ballard, Loan Originator (409) 899-5100 RBallard@RSMC.net
Mr. Electric
Kevin McClory is a great resource – an electrician that prefers helping homeowners with repairs, remodels, and upgrades rather than working on new construction. If you had damage during the storm, Mr. Electric is ready to head your way to assist you. They can help you put in new ceiling fans, security lighting, or rewire areas that were damaged by falling trees. Kevin and Mr. Electric have helped a lot of Southeast Texas families with proper generator installation and preparation from super quiet Hondas through the big whole home options from companies like Generac. They helped one of our readers in Lumberton with a whole home Generac system that runs on natural gas. The family has members with special needs that make it hard to move them in a hurry. The generator was a real blessing to the family during Hurricane Harvey. Kevin McClory, Partner (409) 842-4477 McClory_Kevin@yahoo.com

Simply Citrus – Green Cleaning Service
Zach Hamilton has built a great team who take pride in environmentally healthy cleaning solutions. This is particularly important right now when there are so many toxins in our homes and businesses following the storm. If you are trying to get your home, office, school, or church back online without relying on harsh chemicals, call Simply Citrus. Zach Hamilton, Owner (409) 203-3603
Hardin County Motors – Auto Repair and Pre-Owned Vehicle Sales
Gordon and Sonja Spurlock have grown a great business in a simple manner. They repair cars quickly, correctly, and for a fair price. They also frequently have 4-5 affordable pre-owned vehicles that have been checked out by Gordon. (409) 246-2889
This is a tough time for Southeast Texas. There are some qualified professionals who can help with Rebuilding Southeast Texas. Best wishes to you all.

Hurricane Harvey How to Help Others
Many Southeast Texans have reached out to help each other during and after Hurricane Harvey. People have helped clean each other’s homes and yards, dropped off clothing – furniture – and cleaning supplies at distribution points, manned shelters, cooked meals, and helped in 100 different ways. If you are still looking for some ways to make a positive impact on others, here are some ideas. Visit a local nursing home. We all saw that a nursing homes that didn’t rise to the challenge quite the way we (and they) would have liked to, but the truth is there are always seniors who would love to have visitors. Stop by drop off a homemade snack or dessert, play cards with a senior, or just listen to some great stories. You just might be amazed at what you learn. Give blood regularly. After a big disaster, lots of us are inspired to give blood to help out. The system works so much better if we help keep supplies from ever getting depleted. If you can make time to give blood 4-5 times a year, it can make a big difference. Prepare an extra “emergency” pack to share with others. What did you run out of? Chances are you are fully stocked on those items now. It will be greatly appreciated by neighbors if you have a few of these items to share with others should we get hit with another disaster. Big packages of various sizes of batteries, camping size propane bottles, charcoal and charcoal lighter fluid, matches, band aids, instant coffee, Gatorade or Gatorade powder, and containers of gas can really come in handy. It can be nice for everyone if you have a little extra to share. Free labor. Not everyone has money to have their yard or home professionally cleaned up. What can you reasonably due to assist a neighbor? Some people are comfortable helping others pull up flooring or tear out sheetrock. Others can’t do that, but Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
they are happy to rake seaweed out of a neighbor’s yard or prepare meals for volunteer crews. My wife was impressed with a lady who had illnesses that kept her from being very active. She couldn’t run a chainsaw or carry debris. However, when there was no bread to be had in stores, she cheerfully cooked dozens of loaves for neighbors and volunteers. How many of us ever get homemade fresh bread? The one thing she could do made a big impact on those around her. Have tools around. Even if you can’t use them, it can be a blessing to others just to have them available. A chainsaw, gas, and two cycle oil. Axes, machetes, and hatchets. Screwdrivers, wrenches, and hammers. Crowbars and sledge hammers. During the hurricane, our neighbors and our family used all of the above – and not everyone had their own. Neighbors were happy to share the tools that helped others start the process of rebuilding their homes and lives. Offer to do what others cannot. When we had a pipe burst at the beginning of the hurricane, there was nothing we could do about it. I don’t know anything about plumbing and we didn’t have any plumbing parts. However, a neighbor had the knowledge and the part – and was happy to share both. It was a big blessing to our family, and probably a pretty small thing for him. Listen. One of the things we have learned is that keeping grief inside may seem strong, but it delays healing. Most people need to vent or acknowledge what has been lost. We all have the capacity to listen, and sometimes that is the most special gift of all. Thank you to the thousands of you who found ways large and small to help others. You have been an inspiration – and you are appreciated.
