For children across Southeast Texas, May holds the promise of a summer vacation that is just barely out of reach. We have a “May Mega Calendar” to help you keep them engaged. There is a nice mix of fun and educational, and we threw in a few “just for mom” events so you can get a break and recharge your batteries. May is the gateway to summer, but there are still four weeks for your family to enjoy before it gets here.

Boys’ Haven Crawfish Festival
Live Music – Car Show – Children’s Entertainment – Crawfish Boil May 13th – Parkdale Mall Bring the whole family over to Parkdale Mall for a day of food and fun benefitting Boys Haven in Beaumont. Admission is free. Each year the Southeast Texas community looks forward to this fun family friendly event. Here is our Southeast Texas Family primer for first timers: Park in the Barnes and Noble / Gulfside Dental parking lot. It’s close to the action, and it gives you easy access to our first attraction. Start with the classic car show. Every year there are some beauties that you just won’t find anywhere else. There are some of the cars you’d expect – Mid 50’s Chevrolets, Corvettes from every era, and lots of Mustangs. There are also some surprises – a couple of lowriders, a rare classic, or a rumbling rat rod. Have you been looking for a classic of your own? Bring cash – car shows are an ideal time to buy. The kids will probably be ready for crawfish, so head over there next. At $10 a box, the value is as good as the flavor. You’ll find grandparents, children, and parents side by side enjoying Beaumont’s biggest crawfish boil. If you don’t like crawfish, browse the other vendors for barbecue, burgers, hotdogs, and more. There really is something tasty for everyone. After the kids get their fill of crawfish, take them over to the huge children’s activity area. There are several inflatables appropriate for all ages. One of the most popular features is the Kid Fish area. Kids that do not regularly get to fish enjoy the opportunity to catch some big catfish. For kids that get to fish all the time, there is still a thrill in being able to watch the catfish react in the pool clear water. Do you have young children? The petting zoo has chickens, goats, and other soft and cuddly creatures. Throughout the day there is a great range of live music. Enjoy Zydeco, Cajun, country hits, and classic rock. 32nd Annual Boys Haven Crawfish Festival - 10a – 6p Parkdale Mall parking lot in Beaumont (409) 790-1267 for Denise Berry if you are interested in sponsorship or being a vendor. We’ll see you Saturday March 13th for the biggest crawfish boil in Beaumont! SSay, Sa y, “I saw aw itt in SET aw SETX TX F Family amilly Guide” am Gui uide idee”

SETX Mom’s Health: Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
In Southeast Texas, things are heating up. That is going to mean we have to be increasingly vigilant watching our family’s hydration. The brain is 75% water. Even minimal dehydration can reduce alertness, concentration, and short term memory. This is even more of an issue in our young children and adolescents. Are you or your child prone to headaches? Two of the biggest culprits are lack of sleep and being dehydrated. Many Southeast Texas families are more active in the summer. When you hydrate is also important. Drink a glass of morning when you wake up each morning and drink water on the way to, during, and after strenuous workouts. Most Golden Triangle gyms and youth sports teams make sure there is water available. Are you or your child at risk for obesity or diabetes? Hydration helps. It does not hurt to swing by Rao’s or Sertino’s for a Frappuccino when you need a pick me up or to relax with a glass of wine after a long day’s work, but the bulk of our fluid intake should come from water. Do you have trouble drinking water, getting your children to drink water, or keeping water around when you are away from home? See if any of the following tips would be helpful for you: • Do you need a little flavor? Many Southeast Texas doctors remind us that tea and other drinks do not have the same hydration benefits as water. However, you can squeeze a little lime, orange, or grapefruit into your next glass for great taste and increased health benefits. You can also make your own infused waters at home. Get ideas on Pinterest or YouTube. • Did you forget to bring water from home? Most fast food restaurants will give you a to go glass of water, sometimes for free and usually for less than an ice tea or soft drink. A Route 44 ice water from Sonic will get you pretty far down the road! You can also swing by Market Basket or Brookshire Brothers and throw a case of water in your trunk or in the back of the minivan. • Do your kids not like to drink water? Kids are pretty smart. Talk to them about why you want them to drink water – feeling more awake and alert, preventing headaches, and saving money towards things they will ultimately enjoy more than a $2 soda – like a visit to Jumping World or Schlitterbahn. Doctors now recommend drinking sugared soft drinks no more than one time each week (and that’s a 12 ounce, not a 32 or 44 ounce). How much water should we drink? Doctors typically recommend (8) eight-ounce glasses daily. Your SETX physician, dietician, or fitness trainer can tell you more.

2017 Two Magnolias Cooking with Kids Camp Cooking is one of the most important skills our children can learn – whether they are boys or girls. Being able to cook has advantages that will last your child a lifetime: • For most families, cooking at home can be 80% less expensive than eating in a restaurant. • The more our children understand about how food works, the better they are equipped to plan meals that will help them (and one day their own children) avoid some of the health DIÁLFWLRQV WKDW SODJXH 6RXWKHDVW 7H[DV IDPLOLHV LQFOXGLQJ diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. • Cooking is a fun activity that can bind families together. There are whole generations of families in the Golden Triangle that bonded over making gumbo together, processing sausage made from wild hogs, making meals from produce fresh from the family garden, or catching and cooking fresh Gulf Coast blue crabs. Two Magnolias offers a Beaumont summer camp experience that your child will enjoy and that will provide skills they can use for decades to come. Two Magnolias and Chef KJ Bradford would love for your children to come out and learn new recipes and develop a joy for cooking. $60.00 per day or $150.00 for the whole week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00am-12:00pm Questions: Call (409.833.5913) or (409.550.3478)
