Is your budget super tight this summer? In the Golden Triangle, Vacation Bible Schools are super popular – and almost always free to attend. Children enjoy crafts, activities, games, and learning songs. Whether you regularly attend church or not, VBS programs are a great way to help your child develop their relationship with Christ. Most VBS programs offer snacks; a few will offer a full meal. Typically, there will be some kind of “family night” where you will be invited to see what your child learned over the week. Some Vacation Bible School programs are in the morning. Others are in the evening. If you’re looking for more information on local VBS opportunities, visit SETXChurchGuide.com or “Like” the SETX Church Guide Facebook page. SETX Church Guide acts as an online directory for local worship centers.

Of course, there is more to summer than camp. What other experiences would you like your child to have? Within a short drive, you have access to miniature golf, bowling, laser tag, family friendly campsites, live theater, nature hikes, and a great deal more.

Come out to find out about early bird offers, teen nights, and special events that will be held throughout the summer. Best of all, this is a FREE Southeast Texas Family Event! Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

Bass Fishing

For Beginners Are you looking for an activity you can share with your childd ffor or a lifetime? or lifetim ti ee?? For many of our Southeast Texas families, bass fishing is the pperfect eerrfe fect ct choice. cho hoic ice. For some, bass fishing is a science involving checking water temperature, em mpe perature, documenting moon phases, and searching all over Southeast Texas xass andd the internet for the “just right” color of plastic worm. Your child is probably baabl blyy not not ready for that. x Don’t overthink it. If you’re trying to win a bass tournament, a lot of preparation and planning can be helpful. You don’t have to get too serious if you just want your child to catch a few bass. Just get out there and put some of these basic tips to use. x Learn one good knot. My kids and I fish about 200 days a year. I use the basic fisherman’s knot. My tenyear-old uses a more sophisticated polymer knot. My fourteen-year-old knows a half a dozen knots I don’t know. Knowing more is better, but learn and teach your child one good fishing knot and you’ll be in good shape for years. x Start with a Texas rigged plastic worm. It really doesn’t matter what kind. I generally start with a black or dark colored Senko with a chartreuse tip from Big Bite Baits. They are frequently on sale at Academy for $1.88 per package. Texas rigging is simply adding a bullet weight over a worm hook and then attaching your plastic worm. Toss it along the bank of a nearby pond, lake, or river and either retrieve it super slowly or gently bounce it up and down. Chief Advantage: rigged “weedless” style, it will resist getting snagged on weeds, limbs, logs, and other cover that big bass like to hide in. Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”

24

www.SETXFamily.com

x A spinner bait is the ideal backup plan. If the plastic worm is not generating results, this is a great backup choice. It is simple to use. Just cast it out and reel it back in at different speeds. They also bounce well off of submerged logs, rocks, and other potential snags. Fish that have not seen them in a while find spinner baits irresistible. I’ve seen children catch 5-10 bass in a few minutes on a tiny farm pond with a spinner bait. Chief Advantage: This is a faster way to fish and kids are more comfortable moving quickly. x Sometimes less really is more. The final bait will look at today is super versatile. Locally we call it a “crappie jig” pronounced crop-ee jig. They are tiny and available in dozens of styles and colors. Try white to start. You tie them to a small jig head and can fish them by reeling them back slowly, quickly, or bouncing them along the bottom. They will occasionally get snagged on underwater obstructions, but don’t worry – they are cheap. You can usually get a dozen for about a dollar. Chief Advantage: They are great for catching bass, but they will also catch all varieties of perch, trout, and even the occasional catfish. You can even catch saltwater fish with them. x Don’t be afraid to let your child teach you. If your child enjoys bass fishing, they are likely to learn quickly – and not just from you. They will watch You Tube videos on their phone and tablet. They will talk with friends, relatives, and neighbors. They will come back excited about more exotic techniques, baits, and equipment. Let them try out the things they are most excited about – and soon you really will be learning from them. x Need help? Spend a little money at local tackle stores. Nobody knows everything, but the men and women who own local tackle shops know a lot. Just as importantly, they hear a lot. People tell them where fish are biting, what bites they are biting on, and how those baits are being fished. The tackle might be a little more expensive than it is at Academy, but the information can be priceless. Try Outcast Tackle in Groves, Ann’s Tackle Shop in Jasper, R-1 Bass in Beaumont, or Tackle Addict in Livingston (they sponsor youth bass tournaments).

Southeast Texas Family Magazine Tip: One of we love about bass fishing is that men and boys have NO advantage over women and girls. These days, bass fishing can turn into something big – a high school sport, a college scholarship, even a career. Right now, none of that is important. Bass fishing is a fun activity that you can share with your child. You can start for under forty dollars for both of you and add pieces at your comfort level. You can enjoy this activity together for a lifetime. Unlike some sports, you will probably just keep getting better at it. Talk, laugh, praise, take lots of pictures. Your child is growing up fast.
