September brings the smell of Friday night lights, early morning soccer games and cross country meets, and the almost audible screeching sounds of all things summer coming to a halt. It’s back to the grind of routine, school, homework, dinner, and the Wonder Woman-like balance of keeping the household humming along with the new schedules. I love giving myself a simple one word motto for big projects, like Balance, Improvement, Family, People, Basics. When everything in life gets wild and wooly, or there’s a crisis I find I can get my focus back faster when I filter life through that motto. I challenge you to find a simple priority for this school year that will help keep things in focus and balance for you, your kids, and your home. Inspire, God, Yes, No, Try…. DEFY GRAVITY – by Daisy Mae Hargraves and soul! For that, my friends, is how Ever feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders? Stuck in the grip of gravity? Why stay there? You have the power to live light and soar high in the moments, days and years of your vapor of a life here! Let’s take a closer look at the load that weighs us down and how to lose it! Gravity is defined as the force that attracts a body toward the center of the earth or toward any other physical body having mass. Gravity is physical and gravity is spiritual. From the day we are born: baby’s first steps, through adulthood, physical performance, muscular strength, and on to youth preservation and anti-aging, our souls are innately attempting to defy the grave and live fully alive! Mix that desire with parenting in a Western world full of self-inflicted heavy cares, and you have a soul at war. On the contrary though, what could happen to our lives, if we were to figure out how to ease the soul by defying the force that drags us down? Let’s defy gravity together, in mind, body 4
SETXAdvertising@gmail.com
we get high on the sauce of life! I’m Daisy, a homeschool mom of 3 amazing babes, a wife of 19 years, a health and fitness coach of 22 years, a daughter of the High King of Heaven and a great lover of LIFE! In my years as a health professional, I’ve studied human behavior through client observation, research and practice. And in my 15 years as a mom in American culture, I’ve lived it. I certainly do not have this thing called life on earth totally figured out. No one does. But I have uncovered a few fool-proof tools that can truly help us lift our eyes and our bodies, to rise above the weight of this world, and defy gravity in these short years on planet earth. When things get stressful at home, work or just life in general, these are great reminders that can help keep us out of the pit and high on the mountain of life, where the perspective is much clearer. PS….I’m a nerd for acronyms. So, just roll with me on all the first letter references.
Do Stuff – A life is transformed by Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
the things we DO; not by good intentions. Mind over matter, sounds nice and we hear it often in the fitness world, but we are creatures of habit…that’s physical, repetitive behavior. Matter over mind is the physical act of training your mind by repeating action, and often times, this means breaking the mundane patterns to feel life deeper! Did you know that if you force yourself to laugh for a whole minute (even when you don’t feel funny), that laugh will eventually become real, and you’ll feel happier and actually funny inside? My Mom is so great at this one! She laughs all day, and it lightens the mood around her. The more you do it, the more you’ll want to do it. Just do stuff! My husband often says, “Jump in and we’ll figure out the rest later.” That’s a little thing called faith, and it creates practice for good action and creates open doors for more good action.
Exercise – Don’t want to be down?
Well then, get UP! Defy gravity inside and out by using this miracle vessel called the human body! It’s something you hear, see and read daily, but after 20 plus years in the health and fitness industry, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. It’s uncomfortable. It’s hard, but it’s pure and it’s powerful, and it works! You have the power every day, to push against gravity and stand to move! Exercise is a necessity to a good life. Movement is medicine to an aching body and an aching soul. God designed our bodies to move, and if we don’t move as we are designed, things will begin to breakdown. You don’t have to be a Cross-fit queen or a marathon www.SETXFamily.com
runner, but a good, sweaty workout will help change your daily perspective with good endorphins. It’ll empower you with physical strength and easier breath. Those daily victories will begin to add up to a lifetime of strength and energy to live high!
F
uel – What are you feasting upon? What you put in will always come out. Fuel the body with a healthy balance of lean protein, healthy fats and plantbased carbs for the most nourishment to the brain, the muscles, organs, and blood. Hydrate with water and stay away from “miracle drinks” and junk made by man. We have what we need to balance our lives right here growing in the soil of earth. In the same way, feed the soul goodness. Fuel up with prayer, scripture, words of life to and from others, and grow an appreciation for God’s creation. Take moments out of each to day look up at the sky and watch the clouds. My little brother is so good at this one. I catch him, at random times, just staring at the sky. We should all do that. Suddenly, your immediate worldly cares lose weight, your perspective changes, and you’re defying gravity.
Y
es – Yes is a positive word, except when it’s overused. It’s certainly way more fun to say than ‘no’, but every ‘yes’ to one thing, is a ‘no’ to something else. Americans seem be best at cramming the family schedule full of activities! Why are we doing this? For some reason, we have a twisted thought that we’re more successful if we’re busy. That’s a LIE…a big one, and it To Advertise Call (512)567-8068

pulls us closer to earth and away from a lighter more fulfilling life. Say NO to the things that choke the life out of life and YES to the things life you up! If you must, schedule in time for YOU, time to “do nothing” as you soak in the greatness of the world around you!
Grow in your GIFTS – Being to-
tally true to who you were created to be helps you find your purpose in life. It’s tragic to watch people to try to imitate another. Each of us was designed by an infinite God, and He gave us unique DNA and a special finger print to remind us how different we each are. As flawed creatures, and in our righteous search for human connection, we’re unfortunately sometimes drawn to fit into a category, a label or a culture trend, instead of creating our own way. Too often, we define ourselves and others by occupation. Your job isn’t who you are. People who have lived a long time seem to understand this better. Your job is what you do to provide comfort through income, but what if that job leaves no time to enjoy the comfort? Reaching and striving to make time for your divine gifts is vital to the health of your soul, and it gives to others. Those that perfect that, have full lives and are able to bless the world around them in great ways. You can’t possibly look like yourself if you’re busy looking at others. Grow UP, toward the sun, and reap great light and life!
R
elease – “Let it go” as Queen Elsa would sing. Release the heaviness of this world by casting your cares upon your creator. Release the stuff, the junk in 6
SETXAdvertising@gmail.com
your life that makes you heavy. A wise friend once told me that “more stuff equals more stress.” So true! Houses, cars, fancy furniture, nice things…. they’re all meant to create safety and comfort, but those are the very things that keep us tied down to the earth. Travel light. Live light. In the same way, unforgiveness can have the same impact on our ability to live high. Let burdens, grudges, and bad thoughts go! Defy gravity and live high!
A
dventure – Whether you consider yourself an adventurer or not, you were designed with a need for it. God didn’t create humans to tell the future. We don’t know what tomorrow holds and we’re not in control of what’s next. For some, that’s stressful. For those who embrace it, it’s exciting! Kids come by this one so easily because they are still in awe of their surroundings. Things are fresh and new and the world is an adventure. As adults, we have a need to connect with nature to re-charge that wonder and amazement for life. Miracles are everywhere for us to discover. The occasional unusual or risky experience can change the way we view the world, and exploring the unknown brings wonder and youth to the soul.
Value – Do you know your value?
God makes beautiful things…not average things. You are indeed, fearfully and wonderfully made by an almighty, powerful creator. People that know their worth and their beauty, despite what culture might consider “beautiful” are the happiest and most fulfilled, because they are defying the weight Say, “I saw it in SETX Family Guide”
of labels and opinions of man. Do you consider yourself beautiful? You should, because you are!
Inspire –When you rise high above
earthly circumstance, and organic overflow of love for life will pour out to others. If you are high on life, others will be drawn to that. I’ve witnessed so many great ones around me that have risen above brutal circumstances in life, and they inspire me and others to press upward. Give freely, serve often, love big and your joy will be full in goodness toward others. Inspiration fuels more inspiration and soon, goodness around you and beyond you will grow.
T
ry something NEW – Perspective is everything! Feeling stuck in a pattern of safety? Face fears and get risky! Stand on your head. Travel to a new land. Climb to the summit of a mountain and look down; maybe even jump (with an attached bungee cord or parachute. Swim in new waters. DANCE! Taste a new dish. Get to know a complete stranger. Trade shoes with a friend. Eat with your fingers. (My sweet Sri Lankan friend taught me this one.) Challenge yourself to a new goal. Feed the homeless. Take a gap day, or a gap year, and do something completely wild. The world was created for God’s glory and our enjoyment. Go get it! Trying something brand new will stir the soul, give fresh perspective, and make for a rich life!
breath and a new chance to seize the day and get high on the sauce of life! As the great author Bob Goff, states in his book, Love Does, “I used to be afraid of failing at something that really mattered to me, but now I’m more afraid of succeeding at things that don’t matter.” Defy gravity and live a higher life! These things, you’ve already known in the deepest part of your make-up. Ever since our souls were formed by the hand of God, in his image, we have longed for eternity…a never-ending life, high above the great force that wants to drag us down. Defy that force in your mind, body and soul, right now, here on earth, by looking for hope in heaven, and a piece of heaven might just come to you!

ROADTRIPPING
WACO A little George Strait 1982, it makes me want to take the back road, the long way home, put a little gravel in my travel, unwind, unravel…. (Rodney Adkins) We took the back roads passing farms, cornfields, cotton fields, and rusty silos. Just a bit north of Waco, TX is a property that is a self sufficient community that lives as through it were a century ago, the Heritage Homestead. Onsite there are designated buildings for blacksmithing, textiles, and pottery, a gristmill, a basket shop, a short film about the location, the café, a market, a cheese house, a bookstore, and mercantile. It was a nice experience to watch the trades in action and admire the fine craftsmanship. We observed live weaving on looms, a spindle in action, the gristmill humming away, the blackwww.SETXFamily.com
smith pounding out door handles and locks, the woodworkers were planning, and the potters sculpting in front of our eyes. At each station they offer their handmade wares for purchase. We enjoyed lunch at the café – our choice was grass fed beef

the 100+ Texas temps curbed our adventurous spirits. We had no real expectations; we are quite the DIYers and roll-up-my-sleeves kind of gals, but we are always up for kicks and giggles. The entire place is beautiful and set up nicely for the whole family. It’s a great execution of bringing the outdoors in.
