Show Dialy Issue Number 1 Fall 2000
Hello fellow readers, shoppers, and antique enthusiasts alike! I am Roberto Alvarado Junior, and like the passing of the torch in Paris, Show Daily too is passing on the torch this year. After 23 years of dedicated passion for promoting the Round Top-Warrenton Antique Show, Roberto Alvarado Sr., founder of Show Daily (alongside Suzy Kirchberg Alvarado), is officially retiring and riding away in his new RV! I am proud to say that I am here to stay and will continue my father’s legacy by keeping his flame brightly lit. The spring issue marked my first issue in entering the realm of publishing.
In the beginning, there was “Round One”; today, at the end of our 24th year, we celebrate “Round Forty-Nine.” I am truly honored to be a part of this thriving community and represent the new generation of antique-goers and the new passionate venue owners. “Where does the show end?” Recently, more and
more antique shows have been popping up around the Round Top scene, each trying to get a piece of the action! Seventeen miles of shows offer more than just antiques. From fashion shows to large pop-up dinners, late-night shopping with live music, and good libations, there’s surely something for everyone. I do believe this will be our biggest show yet. One new venue is High Country, owned by Debra Sherman in Carmine just past County Line Antiques, from Hwy 237. Please see page 80 for details.
A little further down the trail is the bustling town of Brenham. When the show comes, we all feel the impact and Brenham is no different. With lodging, shopping, and restaurant touring in high demand, Brenham is a place to fill the need, home of Blue Bell Creamery. Please see page 51, I have implemented a new map for all you shoppers and foodies, not to mention the brand-new Haak Wines, for all you wine enthusiasts! So fresh on this block, they didn’t make it on the map this season. Here is where you’ll find them-109 S. Baylor Brenham, Texas. I recommend the wine port, it’s delicious!

Lou, Suzy, and I were, at the start, the only ones around. When we launched Show Daily, Suzy was the layout expert, and Lou was the writer, reporter, and sales guy. As for me? I was just along for the ride. Some might say I was the instigator, but I can’t say for sure. However, Lou was the driving force, the powerhouse who brought home the bacon. At that time, we were vendors at Bar W, just one tent among the 20 or so dealers there in the fall of 2000. Show Daily Issue One was a modest 12-page black-and-white bond paper newsletter-like tabloid. The whole show was only a two-week event, but Lou took to the task with the enthusiasm of Jimmy Dean at a high school dance. Imagine Lou’s challenge: a New York accent among a “y’all” Texas country crowd. Nevertheless, Lou exemplified professional composure in dealing with the laid-back country folk who make up a large part of the vendors in Warrenton, where Show Daily began.
On the cover for this issue, we feature another buddy and Vietnam Veteran: Randall Beck, and a singing cowboy. See him up and down Warrenton singing Yippy kai yay! AKA Angel.
Many years later, with nearly one million copies printed, Lou’s brilliance, work ethic, and writing skills have made Show Daily a bellwether for over 25 years. The evidence is clear—just look at all the copycat publications that have tried to enter the scene. Many readers have said they’re “here to steal your thunder”—I’m still trying to figure that one out. Lou was a driving force and deserves much of the credit for making this publication what it is today. Therefore, I officially dedicate this issue, number 49, to Lou Christine, Feb. 2nd, 1947 - Sept. 5th, 2024. Thank you, Lou. We love you. May you rest in peace. You were truly my very best friend and the best friend to many here at Show Daily and to hundreds more throughout the Texas Antiques Week show area.

When the Antique Fair hits Fayette County, Texas, the first name that comes to mind is Bobbie Jean “BJ” Renck. She and her husband Smokey are renowned for running the Renck-Baca Pavilion which is the large dance hall that they purchased in Fayetteville and moved to Warrenton. BJ was the Pioneer of the Original Warrenton Antique Show that started October 1981 and has continued every spring and fall.
BJ and her friend Dorothy Oltzman set up the Antique Show with BJ selling antiques and Dorothy selling the BBQ. They rented Zapp Hall for her first show and had seven dealers selling their wares inside and three dealers outside in the Renck yard. In about one and a half years, they conducted three shows in Zapp Hall. The Rencks rented Koopmann Hall for nine years and then in 1992 they purchased Baca Hall from Raymond Baca, Jr. in Fayetteville and had it moved in June of 1992. Renck Antiques by BJ and Smokey specialized in Texas primitives, antique depression glassware, antique cabinets, table, chairs, rockers, and much more. Tom and Penny Walker of Kingwood, Texas and George and Susan King of Dime Box, Texas were original vendors in Renck Hall in October 1992. Tom and Penny retired a few years ago and George and Susan still bring their antiques to Renck Hall for
both shows. When the Rencks began the Antique Show, the town of Warrenton wasn’t very well known. The first show was successful but local residents did not think too highly of the show. Six months later they did their shows and it was again a big success with vendors and customers.
Vendors and customers lined the road as more and more people became infatuated with the Antique Show. Today, vendors and customers plan their schedules and vacations around the fall and spring shows.
BJ’s daughter, Marlene Rooks, has her earliest memories of her mother making all of the preparations, advertising, and getting the word out that Warrenton, Texas would have a show four miles southeast of Round Top. BJ’s goal was to put Warrenton on the map. She was one of the original advertisers in Show Daily as locals, customers, and advertisers awaited the arrival of each issue to give locations, facts, and information about the show. Her goal was certainly achieved!

I have seen and thoroughly read every single copy of your fine publication since its very start when it was only 12 pages, and I must admit, and so will you, that this letter is long overdue. I also know for a fact that putting out your publication is pretty much a long and grueling chore and I could probably add that to some extent, thankless. Why, I have even read some of the unpublished letters that have been submitted to your office, through a source that will remain nameless for obvious reasons. You know the kind I mean, with all that colorful language.
Ms. Susanna Marie Elizabeth Kirchberg, whom I happen to know pretty well, is the sole pillar, workhorse, and journalist responsible for driving the mechanism to its final completion-- from collecting all the data and writing most of the stories to the stones to getting first-hand info from her haggard sales personnel who just scrawl illegible hieroglyphic on the order slips with encryptions only a linguistics expert could decipher.
Hundreds of ads go through her hands, one at a time each with meticulous love and care. I know how proud she is of everyone. They are her creations, as many of the customers give her little to go by. Still, she sends the images to every client, sometimes thousands of miles away, for final approval, only to get no response or indifference until a day or two before the deadline. Goodness and six months is never time enough. Still, she patiently awaits the stragglers and cheerfully she bends to their every becking call, sometimes withstanding the wrath and insults of thoughtless, insensitive people with little or no cultural upbringing. To this, add the fact that her ner-do-good sorry excuse of a husband, Roberto, who is flippant, facetious, and sorely lacking in moral fiber, just sits around drinking tequila and beer with his buddies. How disgusting! Anyway, I just wanted to get this off my buck, so there.
Marie Ann Klamt K. Jerico, Vermont
Thanks for the thoughtful letter, you brought misty tears to my eyes. However, I must tell you that our wonderful little Show Daily team works just as hard, both during and after the shows to make the paper the best it can be. In fact, I’d like to thank every one of them for their efforts and determination. I couldn’t have done it without them!
Mom, I know you mean well (please stop reading my mail), but 99.9% of the letters we receive are very positive, and do a lot to motivate me to want to give 100% to our advertisers and readers. Many of these fine people have never tried advertising anywhere else and perhaps don’t fully understand what goes into putting out the publication. But that’s ok, we love them just the same and try hard to make them happy, and to bring them business during and after the shows. (Readers, let dealers know you heard about them through the Show Daily. Many dealers will give you a special discount just for mentioning their ad, and my mom will feel much better too. Thanks!) Finally, dear mom, Roberto is actually a very thoughtful person, although you might not agree. He has numerous good qualities, a few of which I can’t mention here. Big Hug!

My husband and I decided to take an afternoon drive and ended up at John’s Bait and Lodging, located at 1013 Park Prairie, Fayetteville. To our delight, it far exceeded our expectations, we found a charming and well-kept gem.
Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by the owner, John Harvey, who introduced himself and answered all our questions about the building and the services offered. What we discovered was a quaint country bar bustling with friendly patrons enjoying delicious pizza, snacks, and a variety of beverages.
holidays and weekends when they visit local relatives.
is a smoke-free, nostalgic
John and Vicki Tobola acquired the building in 2023 with a vision to restore it to its former glory. They undertook extensive renovations, from updating the floors to installing a new restroom. The result country setting that is both welcoming and cozy. I was particularly impressed with the modern-country decor and the electronic Touch Tunes jukebox mounted on the wall.
Known for great pizza, welcoming staff, and chilled drinks, this popular spot is welcoming to families, especially on
In addition to the bar, there are three rental cabins, covered boat storage, and kayaks available for rent. They also offer a good selection of bait, including worms and waterdogs, perfect for a trip to nearby Lake Fayette. During Antique Fairs, visitors can enjoy the tranquil atmosphere beneath the large live oaks or catch the action on one of several bigscreen TVs. You might even stumble upon a cook-off taking place on the grounds. Plans for the future include expanding the building to add pool tables and an outdoor fire pit for grilling steaks, creating a “backyard pub” experience. If you’re headed to Fayette County, make sure to visit this hidden gem.
Vickie Davis embodies what the Italians call “slancio” in more ways than one. As an artist, her enthusiasm for creative flow allows her to transform even the most mundane items into masterpieces. As a designer, her dynamic approach creates a larger-thanlife look. Her secret allure lies in her choice of colors and strategic arrangements. Vickie loves to travel, seeking unique treasures from state to state to create the perfect showpiece. Her diverse selections and creative thinking bring her eclectic art to life. Whether it’s a rattan cane chair, a plate of pears, crystal grapes, an old etching, or a small silver serving dish, her arrangements often feature elements in threes and multiple shades of white. Her eye for combining pastel colors adds a touch of elegance with a rustic vibe, ensuring that each arrangement evokes awe.
Today, Vickie finds herself in the land of magnificent mountains, luxurious hotels, resorts, and world-class golf courses—none other than Palm Desert, California! Known for her sensational Texas Rose Antique Show and her famous Chicken Salad, served for over 16 years at the Texas Rose Café, she is greatly missed. I like many others, miss the chicken salad and those delicious chocolate chip cookies!
Two years after selling her property to Rayan Buenning, the proud owner of “The Horseshoe,” Vickie returned, last spring, to do what she does best: setting up beautiful, elegant arrangements in Carmine at the YStation. Due to her much-needed attention elsewhere, she will not attend this fall show but plans to return in the spring of 2025.
In this fall’s issue of Show Daily, we present to you an article by Vogue Magazine that placed Round Top number 3
on the list of places to visit for antique shopping; surpassing cities and events such as those in Istanbul, Amsterdam, Belgium, Hudson Valley and Catskills, New York, London, and Atlanta. Only Paris and Milan / Rome were ranked higher than Round Top. Although Round Top’s antique show started only in 1967, it has managed to compete with markets nearly as old as time. Antiques are about more than just beauty – they encompass craftsmanship, traditions, and history. When you set your eyes on a piece that captures your fancy, you’re suddenly drawn into a rabbit hole of discovery. You’ll want to learn everything about the period in which it was made, who crafted it, how long it took to create, and how such an old item ended up here for sale. The questions are endless.
The following paragraphs are based on Nicole Kliest’s August 2024 Vogue.com article titled:
“The best cities for antique shopping offer more than worldly treasures. After all, antique shopping is not just about scoring an elegant chaise lounge or gorgeous Chinoiserie screen – antiquing is a window into the soul of another epoch. Thus, antique shops and markets are like living museums, sustaining a bygone era of craftsmanship and offering the opportunity to translate old-world sensibilities into your contemporary space. Every antique shop brings an opportunity to dive into the wonder of region’s historical significance.
A universally favored destination for antiques, Paris is renowned the world over for its vast assortment of treasures. Be sure to visit Les Puces, the iconic flea market, as well as the Vernaison Market, which is the real old flea market. Marche Dauphine, Marche Biron, and Marche Paul Bert are must-visit markets for antique lovers alike. There are also smaller and lesser-known flea markets in and around Paris that are great spots for sourcing more affordable yet stunning small decorative accents.
Paris, France, Antique shop
As a country responsible for design movements that include the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, it’s not hard to see why some of Italy’s most prominent cities – Milan and Rome - would be coveted destinations for antiquing. “Being a major fashion capital, the antique and vintage shopping scene is very prevalent due to its history, and it’s closely associated with that art form of fashion-forward, Baker says of Milan. As for Solis, an interior designer, Rome is her preferred city for sourcing rare and higher-end antiques. “These are exquisite pieces that are true of another time,” she says.
Referred to as a “bi-yearly must” by Solis, the Round Top Antiques Fair in Texas is an energetic event with over 50 years of history. Despite the town of Round Top having a population of less than 100, over 100,000 antique hunters flood in twice a year for a chance to unearth treasures stashed in barns, tents, and hayfields. Mark your calendars: the fair usually occurs in September or October and in March or April. There’s also usually a smaller weekend version of the fair each winter in January.”

The Round Top Antiques Fair is an informal but coordinated event that takes place throughout Round Top, Warrenton, Carmine, Burton, and Fayetteville, Texas. This fall’s event is scheduled for October 10th may vary since there is no official governing body for the event. According to Round Top’s website, 2025’s spring show is set to be held from March 20th through April 6th, although dates may vary slightly by vendor.
Proudly, Show Daily Magazine has been covering the Round Top- Warrenton Antiques Week for 24 years now – termed “the bible” by Texas Monthly Magazine. Fayetteville, Texas, and the surrounding counties are fortunate to have Arts for Rural Texas, located at 114 N. Live Oak Street in Fayetteville. Kevin White, Director of Development, explained that the center is a nonprofit organization that benefits the area. It began by offering free art classes on the sidewalk and has since evolved into an art gallery with classrooms located in the Schmidt Annex at 105 Main Street, Fayetteville. They collaborate with fifteen different partner schools across four counties. This year, they showcased fifty-nine pieces of work from emerging artists. The center also offers adult workshops.
The center attracts hundreds of visitors. Each visitor is greeted by a friendly staff member who provides a tour of the center and discusses the artwork displayed throughout the building. They are open six days a week and also sponsor Live Music on the Fayetteville Square on Tuesday nights in October and March. Visitors can bring their lawn chairs and enjoy performances by various talented musicians. The mission of Arts for Rural Texas (ARTS) is to enrich lives through art and art education, with a particular focus on providing opportunities for children. Plan to visit Arts for Rural Texas and be sure to admire the amazing art on display.
If you’re looking for a fantastic place to stop, shop, and explore, the YStation in Carmine, Texas, is the perfect destination. A highlight of this venue is Shirley King, the owner of FLEA BY THE SEA. Renowned for her exquisite collection of vintage treasures, Shirley specializes in mid-century furniture, lamps, and barware. One of her standout pieces is an antique penny floor scale she sourced from an old hardware store in Kosciusko, MS.

Shirley finds great joy in selling at the YStation, particularly because it’s close to her home in Brenham. Her passion for mid-century designs is evident in her offerings. Her advice for aspiring antique sellers? Be patient, stay positive, and choose items that you genuinely love—your enthusiasm will resonate with your customers.
Beckie and Steve Bailey have been showcasing their unique finds at the YStation’s Tractor Barn since January 2021. Under the name Green Dog Antiques, they offer an intriguing mix of “green things and dog things,” with a particular focus on transforming antique furniture and lighting into one-of-a-kind creations. A standout example is their ingenious conversion of a hospital gurney into a stylish bar table and wine rack. It’s a piece that truly exemplifies their motto: resuscitate, refurbish, repurpose, redesign, and relove. Beckie advises shoppers to buy items that “speak to you” and to enjoy the thrill of the hunt.
Don’t miss out on the Fall Show —mark your calendars and make the YStation your first stop!
Down Home Ranch is another gem at the YStation, providing a vibrant community for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They offer a range of handmade items, including home décor and plants, crafted by their community members. Their venue contributes to a rich shopping experience. For more information, visit www.downhomeranch.org.
Cindy Mahoney of GET IT SOLD has been a fixture at flea markets since the 1980s, starting her journey at just 14. Her booth features a diverse array of vintage jewelry, political pins, toys, clothing, and comics, all offered at fair prices.
Mike Craig, the owner of Craig’s Antiques, brings 25 years of expertise to the YStation. His collection includes true antiques and Victorian-era American oak furniture, with unique finds like an 1800s hotel combo dresser featuring a fold-down wet sink and a hidden galvanized water tank. Mike’s advice to new dealers is to enjoy the process, cherish the items you sell, and treat every customer like a friend.
Aguilar are the proud owners of Roadside Café 2145, a mobile food vendor that also offers catering services. When not at an event or catering gig, you can visit them at 3317 FM 2145 in La Grange. With over 30 years of experience in the food industry,
this is their inaugural year operating as mobile vendors at this location. They serve a diverse array of dishes to satisfy all kinds of cravings, from homestyle and soul food to seafood and comfort food. Their fried ribs were particularly popular at their recent event in Carmine at the Y Station. Understanding the challenges of limited dining options in small towns, they aim to offer an additional choice for local residents and those in surrounding areas. Visit them at the Y Station in Carmine from October 10-27.
