Welcome to the 2023 Texas Cavaliers River Parade: Fantastic Voyages!
Our Charitable Honoree this year is Rise and Recovery, and our grand marshal is Charles Duke, who is an astronaut and explorer that is the youngest man to ever walk on the moon. He has been chosen for this incredible commitment to exploration and his philanthropic ventures.
This evening you will see floats representing some of the many children’s charities that the Cavaliers support through The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation. Please join me in celebrating the hard work that all these organizations do in making San Antonio a better place to live.
This year the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation will provide grants to 63 local children’s charities, totaling over $2,500,000.
Your support of the Texas Cavaliers River Parade helps to make these grants possible. Thank you for your generous support of the children of our community.
As a part of the core mission of the Cavaliers, we honor the brave men and women that serve in our Armed Forces. They represent the best of our nation. Please cheer them on as they pass by on our military floats.
My message to the school children is “Give 100%, in everything you do”. I want to encourage everyone to always put forth their best efforts in school, on the field, on the court, at home with chores and family. Give 100% in everything you do!
During Fiesta, please join the Cavaliers in celebrating our rich history and the diverse cultures that are woven into the fabric of our wonderful community!
Viva San Antonio and Viva Fiesta!

Welcome to the 78th Texas Cavaliers River Parade. The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is the pre-eminent Fiesta event that entertains hundreds of thousands of people each year. We are glad you’re here!
FANTASTIC VOYAGES is the theme of this year’s River Parade. Since the beginning of time, we have been exploring, discovering, and voyaging. We have discovered new worlds here on Earth and in space and have reached remarkable new frontiers in science and technology. The FANTASTIC VOYAGES of our brave explorers have expanded our universe and radically changed the essence of our lives.
Tonight, you will see beautifully decorated barges that celebrate the discovery of our world and the exploration of our galaxy. The FANTASTIC VOYAGES theme has been woven into more than 50 festive floats featuring local community groups, children’s charities, celebrities, and local officials.
Each year we choose one of our selected charities to be our Charitable Honoree, an honor that includes additional promotion and a substantial financial gift. The thought behind which charity is selected is never taken lightly and is one of the Texas Cavaliers’ greatest responsibilities. The 2023 Texas Cavalier Charitable Honoree is Rise Recovery. Rise Recovery has been serving our community for over 45 years and continues to make a positive impact in all areas. Rise Recovery helps teens, young adults and families overcome the effects of drugs and alcohol at no cost to the ones they serve. Rise Recovery also operates Rise Inspire Academy which is the only sober recovery campus in Bexar County.
I would like to thank my wife, Anne, as well as our three sons, Campbell, Andrew, and Arthur, for their support. It would have been impossible to manage this parade without their thankful for all they do. I would also like to thank Marshal Jonathan Dear and River Parade Operations for their friendship and many hours of support and
others, including the River Parade Chairmen and Cavalier Board Members, volunteers, and
Charles Moss Duke, Jr. is a brilliant flyer, natural leader and accomplished family man. His meteoric career as a fighter pilot in the Air Force was followed by an equally productive career as a NASA astronaut. A retired USAF Brigadier General, Charlie, as he prefers to be called, is the tenth member of the uniquely distinguished twelve men who have walked on the Moon.
A graduate of the Naval Academy, General Duke received his Masters’ degree from M.I.T. He mastered the F-86 Sabre before graduating from the Air Force Test Pilot School and instructing at Edwards Air Force Base. As a NASA astronaut he was vital to the Apollo program, supporting the Apollo 6, 11, 13 and 17 missions. He was the Lunar Module pilot on the Apollo 16 flight to and from the Moon. Charlie and John Young began their record setting lunar surface stay of 71 hours and 14 minutes by maneuvering the lunar module Orion to a landing on the rough Cayley Plains.
In three subsequent excursions onto the lunar surface, he logged 20 hours and 15 minutes in extravehicular activities involving scientific equipment and experiments including the collection of nearly 213 pounds of rock and soil samples and the evaluation and use of Rover-2 over the roughest surface yet encountered on the moon. His 4,147 flight hours are complemented by his 265 hours in space.
His post-NASA career has been equally brilliant, distinguished by many awards and honors, by success in business and by significant humanitarian efforts. Charlie is an active speaker, a Christian lay witness and President of Duke Ministry For Christ. He is married to the former Dorothy Meade Clairborne, and they enjoy their two sons, nine grandchildren, and one great granddaugher immensely.
Launched in 1996 in an effort to provide an unforgettable event of fun and food for children, including some with special needs, the Texas Cavaliers’ Children’s Program has to date provided over 20,000 children with dinner and reserved seating at the River Parade.
Through the generous underwriting of the Texas Cavaliers and local businesses, this year, over 900 children from 15 participating charitable organizations are enjoying the river parade.

Rise Recovery is incredibly grateful to be this year's charitable honoree. The efforts of the Texas Cavaliers to support underserved youth in San Antonio cannot be overstated. The children and young people we serve find second chances for their education, their relationships with their families and their futures with Rise Recovery. We are beyond blessed to have this esteemed organization investing in our mission and allowing us to expand our work to even more youth. Thank you.
Rise Recovery helps teens, young adults and their families overcome the effects of drugs and alcohol, and partners with the community in education and prevention. This means that every week, we provide over 300 in-person one-on-one counseling and coaching sessions on our new Charlie Naylor Campus. Over the course of calendar year 2022, Rise Recovery provided 21,628 points of service that resulted in a 94% reduction in school disciplinary referrals and 81% reduction in instances of family violence among the youth we served. We were pleased to serve 2,107 unduplicated participants last year and were able to reach 9,700 students in area schools with early intervention and prevention services.
Our organization is unique in that we are the only one in the area focusing on the 12-17 age group and offering all our services completely for free. We also provide wrap-around, holistic services for the parents, siblings and loved ones of those we serve. We know that this is a family disease and by working not only with the children but also the rest of the family, we are able to reunite them and save their lives. Further, Rise Recovery is one of the oldest and longest serving nonprofits in this sector having provided services since 1977.
As we look forward to the next 45 years of service, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support provided by the generosity of the Texas Cavaliers. We count their investment in our mission as a vote of confidence in what we do for the youth of San Antonio. Thank you for helping us save lives, change futures, reunite families by showing young people how to live a life full of purpose without the use of mind-changing chemicals.

Thousands of area children have received school shoes because of Zapatos and its legendary founder, Gloria Clement Martinez. While undergoing chemotherapy, Gloria had an epiphany that there were probably many children who had never had a decent pair of shoes, so she launched Zapatos. In less than 5 years, and before her death in January, Gloria realized her initial goal of providing over 10,000 pairs of shoes to our city’s most vulnerable children.

UTSA is a Tier One research university. It attained its Carnegie R1 designation, which means that it’s aligned to the top 4% of research institutions in the country. Go, Roadrunners!
This year, UTSA opened its new San Pedro I building on Dolorosa St., along San Pedro Creek. This $91.8 million facility is home to the university’s National Security Collaboration Center and School of Data Science. Later this year, UTSA will break ground on San Pedro II—its Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Careers building, which will be located just across the creek from San Pedro I.
The UTSA School of Data Science is the only one of its kind in Texas and the only one in the country at a Hispanic Serving Institution. That’s important, because it means that UTSA is well-positioned to help diversify the emerging field of data science.
Did you know that the San Antonio School of Art is one of five UTSA campuses? It’s now known as the UTSA Southwest Campus. UTSA is committed to supporting the long-term continuity of high-quality arts education in San Antonio.
UTSA is home to two Conference USA championship teams. The Women’s Soccer Team surged through the C-USA tournament to capture its first league title last year and, for the second year in a row, Roadrunners Football took home the Conference USA Championship trophy. This summer, the Roadrunners will join the American Athletic Conference.

On behalf of The Texas Cavaliers, it is my privilege and honor to welcome each and everyone one of you to the 78th Annual Texas Cavalier River Parade. You are our most honored guests. The Texas Cavaliers enjoy a strong and proud relationship with all of the branches of the U.S. Military and that relationship has always been a cornerstone of our organization since its inception.
The Texas Cavaliers recognize the extraordinary sacrifices that each of you and your families have made to serve our nation. We realize that you are not recognized in relation to the impact of your service to our Country and the freedoms we take for granted. We understand and appreciate that many of you have missed significant and important occasions in your lives as the result of your military commitments and obligations. We honor those costs of service and sacrifice.
Our organization acknowledges your many sacrifices as extraordinary and indicative of your faithful service and that your military commitment to our country is a great calling in life. Your sacrifice grants to all of us the freedom to live in a free, secure and sovereign land.
While your story and reasons for serving may go untold in many corners of this world, your passionate patriotism and selfless service to protect our way of life and our freedom will never be forgotten. Please know that heroes such as yourself do not have to speak to be heard, and rarely do our service men and women tell their own story. However, your actions, sacrifices, and pain are captured and manifested in the most enduring and patriotic image of our great Nation – the Flag of the United States of America. For your service, we thank you, words which are wholly inadequate, but be it forever known that every member of The Texas Cavaliers thanks you, salutes you and honors you for your patriotic service to this great Nation.
On behalf of all The Texas Cavaliers and their families, welcome to The Texas Cavaliers River Parade!
For the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces - especially those wounded in defense of our nation - The gratitude and support of our community are essential parts of our soldiers returning home.
The Texas Cavaliers military Fiesta began in 2003 and is now in its 21st year. Originally for Wounded Warriors and their families, the program has been extended to other active-duty members and their families while continuing to work closely with the Warrior and Family Support Center.
Over 1,500 active-duty service members and their families are expected to attend this year’s Military Fiesta. Our guests include wounded warriors from San Antonio Military Medical Center (SAMMC) - along with their families and caregivers. Also in attendance tonight are fellow military personnel from Fort Sam Houston, Lackland AFB, Randolph Air Force Base as well as students from Fort Sam Houston Independent School District, Lackland Independent School District, and Randolph Field Independent School District.
In addition to tickets, the military members are provided pre-parade entertainment, a delicious meal courtesy of Whataburger, sodas and bottled water graciously donated by St. Anthony Hotel and Star Bottling Works, delicious ice cream provided by Blue Bell Creameries and an official 2023 King’s medal. For the 21st consecutive year, IBC bank has graciously provided their Plaza to accommodate this year’s Military Fiesta Program.

The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation Board of Trustees believes that every dollar donated to the Foundation should go directly toward children in need. To that end, the Board produces an annual golf tournament to directly offset operating expenses and support annual giving. We gratefully recognize are sponsors for their ongoing generous support of children charities and we thank our volunteers and participants.
Remember, it’s not about golf—it’s about the kids!
They celebrate our city, support children’s charities...and roll up their sleeves to volunteer.
Since 1940, Texas Cavaliers have been spreading joy and goodwill throughout our city as hosts of the Texas Cavaliers Fiesta River Parade. And since 1989, Texas Cavaliers have been providing grants to promote health and educational opportunities, lift children out of poverty, and give hope to families through their support of children’s charities and the work of the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation (TCCF).
Two years ago, a new chapter was launched to brighten the lives of children in our community – the Cavaliers Care City Wide Community Service Day.
In the first year, 160 volunteers served 10 charities. In 2022, the project expanded to 252 volunteers lending support to 15 charities. Triple Fuhrmann, chair of the 2022 project, said, “We raised the bar … and we expect this event to grow each year. Our wives, children and community partners witnessed a different side to the Cavaliers. We’re very proud of King Antonio and our River Parade, but that’s not all we are. We also are dedicated to giving back, which we do through the Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation, awarding $2 million in grants to 67 children’s charities this year. Through this new service project, we are engaging with people and giving back to our community.”
The 2022 Cavaliers Care Day included service projects at 15 partner agencies where the volunteers performed an abundance of services, including cleaning and painting at the Alamo City Performing Arts Association. Volunteers assembled food packages for children served by the Children’s Hunger Fund. At Special Reach, they prepared crafts for children with developmental delays. One group painted classrooms at Good Samaritan Community Services. At Morgan’s Wonderland Camp, workers cleaned camp cabins to prepare them for excited little campers.
Other partners who benefited from the Cavaliers Care City Wide Community Service Day in 2022 included the Alamo Trust, Inc., Assistance League of San Antonio, Christian Assistance Ministry, City Kids Adventures, Daily Bread Ministries, Gabriella’s Smile Foundation, Book Buddies (SAISD Foundation), SAMMinistries, Sleep in Heavenly Peace, and Wonders and Worries.
All these non-profit organizations are creatively, selflessly and effectively improving lives for children, and the Texas Cavaliers are proud to partner with them.
At Special Reach, they applied their creativity to making crafts for children with developmental delays.

Your enthusiastic support of the Texas Cavaliers River Parade inspires us to host this joyful celebration of San Antonio’s history, culture and people every year, and we thank you!
River Parade Marshal Greg Seay and his team of Cavaliers have spent the past year putting thousands of hours of creative energy into tonight’s spectacular event. Laugh, sing and celebrate with us!
As you may know, the Texas Cavaliers are always up for a party and eager to spread their cheer throughout the community. What you may not know is that this is a parade with a purpose: Part of the proceeds from the River Parade help fund the non-profit Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation (TCCF), which supports children’s charities each year throughout our city and adjacent communities. This year, King Antonio Clyde J.B. Johnson IV will distribute $2 million to 67 children’s charities.
Since its inception in 1989, the TCCF has donated $13 million to charities that bring healing, education, recreation, critical resources and hope to children suffering from poverty, health challenges, limited opportunities, disabilities, abuse and other adversities. King Antonio and his royal entourage visit schools, hospitals and charities, delivering impactful grants and disseminating happiness. Their annual visits delight the children ... and the Cavaliers!
The TCCF also relies on gifts from Cavaliers and friends in the community to ensure that the critical support we provide will continue in perpetuity. We work with trusted advisors to ensure the prudent oversight of investments and the careful vetting of each grant applicant.
If you would like to learn more, visit our website at www.texascavaliers.org and click on “Charitable Foundation.” We invite you to partner with us to make our community a compassionate place for children to thrive.
And now let the parade begin!

Since the Rex Organization’s founding in New Orleans 1872, its traditions have helped define Mardi Gras. Rex’s proclamation invites the world to the grand celebration of Carnival. His royal colors of purple, gold, and green are to this day the colors of Mardi Gras. The Rex Organization’s incorporated name is “The School of Design,” which reflects its focus on the arts and education. Rex, the King of Carnival, and his consort, the Queen of Carnival, preside over the Rex Ball, Carnival's glittering conclusion.
Rex’s motto Pro Bono Publico means “for the public good.” Established in 2006 following Hurricane Katrina, the Pro Bono Publico Foundation is the Rex Organization’s philanthropic effort supporting New Orleans’ public school students. Since its inception, the foundation has contributed over $13 million, including at least $1 million per year over the last eight years.

Transforming Lives = Strengthening Community Assistance League of San Antonio gratefully acknowledges the continued generous support of the Texas Cavaliers.
Nearly one-fifth of Bexar County's children live at or below the poverty line and for their parents or caregivers, providing new clothing and other necessities for their children can be a hardship. The Texas Cavaliers support of Assistance League of San Antonio’s Operation School Bell® clothing program and Togs For Tots program ensures that together we can continue to bring relief and comfort to the children in our community.
Enriching the lives of physically challenged children through the inclusion of those children in the lives and experiences of those who do not face the same limitations.
