New Braunfel’s Landa Park Golf Course rides sport’s newest wave of growth

Golf is enjoying a new Renaissance Era, with rounds being played at their highest level since the 10 years surrounding the turn of the 21st century when Tiger Woods was at his best and the sport was in the news and had the attention of the world.

At the forefront of the latest surge in the game are facilities like the Landa

Park Golf Course at Comal Springs, the friendly but challenging course that’s built its reputation on reasonable greens fees, near-flawless conditioning, a welcoming vibe and an attention to customer service and all the little things.

Landa Park GC continues to ride the wave of the latest uptick in golf and has posted records for rounds and revenue

every year since the Coronavirus pandemic.

This course was doing well before COVID-19, making the most of a prime location in one of the state’s fastest growing cities. It leveraged a stem-to-stern $7 million renovation, completed in 2013 by the noted Houston-based golf architecture firm of Finger Dye Spann, that turned a tired and dated facility into a vibrant and pertinent course that’s an asset to the New Braunfels golf community and the city as a whole.

Quint Alexander, the course’s PGA head professional, leads a team at Landa Park GC that is both golf savvy and customer centric. It helps that the people that run the course understand what they have and make visitors feel welcome.

“The most important thing we can offer our players is the sense that they are our focus, from the time they arrive to the time they leave,” Alexander said. “Part of that is having our golf course in the best shape we can – and our staff has done a

Hole #16, Par 4

consistent job of keeping the course in great condition despite challenges of the weather and the day-to-day wear and tear any course endures from the amount of play we have.”

“The other part is listening to them as to how we can make things better and then acting – as much as we can – on those requests. We take great pride in the amount of regular golfers and return play we receive at Landa Park Golf Course and we don’t take that for granted.”

Landa Park Golf Course has a unique routing near the banks of the Comal River, playing at 6,205 yards from its back tees and to a par of 71. The course will not beat

up golfers who are just learning the game but there’s more than enough length and challenge to keep even the best players’ attention.

After a pair of short par 4s to start the round, Landa Park GC’s routing turns back into the wind for the par 5, 529-yard third. That hole begins perhaps the most challenging stretch at the track. It’s followed by the 571-yard par 5 fourth (which is the longest hole on the course), the 403yard par 4 fifth that plays into the breeze, the 349-yard par 4 sixth with a tough putting surface that moves from front to back, and (on the other side of the street) the 196-yard par 3 seventh, the toughest one shotter at Landa Park GC.

The front nine, which plays to a par of 37, ends with a short par 4 and then (back on the other side if the street) the reachable par 4 ninth.

The back nine (which plays to a par of 34) starts off with a deceivingly tough uphill 157-yard par 3 on which a small lake must be traversed; it’s the first of three par 3s on the back. Scoring opportunities are available on the short par 13th, the 312-yard par 4 14th (which is

Hole # 18, Par 4

a severe right to left and well protected in its green surrounds), and the 345-yard par 4 16th.

The hardest hole on the course awaits at the long (434-yard) par 4 17th, which is straight away but protected by a huge tree on the left of the landing zone and a demanding putting surface. You cross the street for a final time to reach the closing hole – a drivable downhill 315-yard par 4 whose back-right pin placement on a ridge is one of the toughest to get to at Landa Park GC.

The greens at Landa Park Golf Course are well-guarded, with slope, undulation, tiers, ridges, and/or swales on just about every putting surface

The course is scenic with trees and native areas and ponds plus the clear water of the Comal River, which comes into play on some holes. There are spots here where

golfers can watch tubers riding the rapids; on the back nine, you’ll hear a lot of whooping and hollering at Schlitterbahn. Part of the experience at Landa Park Golf Course is the fauna (ducks, egrets, and more) and all of the deer grazing in the rough and in the shade.

All those aspects have helped produce a membership of about 250 players and a handful of leagues and options to get out and enjoy the game.

The staff at Landa Park GC continue to add aesthetic additions and tweaks to the facility. There have been about 80 trees planted in over the past two years to better help to define the course’s fairways,

especially on holes 11, 13, 14 and 17 where the corridors run parallel to each other. Creating that definition is also the purpose of the dry creek bed between the eighth tee box and 13th fairway.

Alexander said the newest addition to the facility will be a deck on the backside of the course’s clubhouse that will allow for open air celebrations and hearty recaps of rounds. Expect the deck to be completed by the spring of 2025.

A Glimpse into History

New Braunfels was founded in 1845 by German immigrants, led by Prince Carl of SolmsBraunfels, who sought to establish a settlement in the Texas Hill Country. The city was laid out in the traditional German style, with a central plaza surrounded by streets radiating outwards. This German heritage is still visible today in the architecture of downtown buildings, the annual Wurstfest celebration, and the enduring pres-

ence of German cuisine and traditions. The Sophienburg Museum and Archives serves as a window into the past, chronicling the history of New Braunfels and its settlers through exhibits, artifacts, and educational programs. Visitors can explore the museum’s collection, which includes historical photographs, documents, and personal items that tell the story of the city’s founding and development.

In addition to live music, New Braunfels offers a variety of entertainment options for visitors of all ages. Landa Park offers scenic walking trails, picnic areas, and a miniature train that takes visitors on a tour of the park’s natural beauty.

Outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to explore in New Braunfels, which is surrounded by the natural beauty of

the Texas Hill Country. The Guadalupe River and Comal River are popular destinations for tubing, kayaking, and paddleboarding, while nearby Canyon Lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and swimming.

For a taste of history, visitors can explore the Heritage Trail, a self-guided tour of downtown New Braunfels that highlights historic buildings, landmarks, and points of interest. The trail includes stops at the Comal County Courthouse, the Faust Hotel, and the New Braunfels Conservation Society, which preserves

and promotes the city’s cultural heritage.

Art enthusiasts will enjoy exploring the local galleries and studios, which showcase works by talented Texas artists. The New Braunfels Art League hosts exhibitions and events throughout the year, while the New Braunfels Historic District is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.

The Grapevine Wine Bar

Gaylord Michigan America’s Summer Golf Mecca

The ingredients of a great Texas summer golf trip are fairly basic.Wide variety of courses and somewhere cooler than constant 90-100 degrees back home. Ease of access is a big plus and so is plenty to do when golf is done for the day.

To which the Northern Michigan Golf Mecca of Gaylord answers check, check, check and a very refreshing check.

From great courses, great weather, direct flights from two of Texas’ largest cities, Gaylord really does have it all for a summer getaway.

“We have found over many years people from Texas love Gaylord and Northern Michigan. They love the great value, great variety, great food, golf and plenty of non-golf activity,” said Paul

Beachnau, executive director of the Gaylord Area Convention &Tourism Bureau.

Gaylord, located in the lower half of Michigan’s Northern Peninsula or Mitt, has 16 different courses to choose from by some of the greatest designers in the business. Tom Fazio, Robert Trent Jones, local favorite Rick Smith and former PGA Tour player Gary Koch have all produced great works here.

Plus, you want golf history? How about one of the most famous Par 3 courses in America and its most famous Million Dollar Ace by none other than Texan Lee Trevino at the iconic Threetops short course.

Treetops Resort

Gaylord really does have it all. But first you have to start by getting there. No more annoying delays or possible missed connections as this summer both Houston and Dallas will for the first time have direct flights to the scenic and convenient Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City.

“We think Houston and the direct service there will be an absolute home run,” said Beachnau. “In Dallas, we started in with a single jet and upgraded to a jumbo airliner with a full flight. June 29

Lodge Interior
The Garland Lodge & Golf Resort

will be a great date to introduce direct air service from Houston to Gaylord and continue our great momentum.”

From there it’s only an hour ride via shuttle or rental car to one of the many Gaylord golf destinations, and that’s where the fun really begins.

There is a truly an embarrassment of golf riches in the Gaylord area, so the biggest problem is where to start first with golf and lodging, but this is as good as any. “I really believe the Tribute at the Otsego Resort is a hidden gem in our area,” Bechnau said. “So many people know about the famous Treetops Resort and the Threetops par 3, but former PGA tour golfer and TV commentator Gary Koch did the Tribute at the Otsego Resort and it’s really, really good.”

woods and pines, and make ample use of the abundant natural water.

Adding to Beachnau ‘s pointers on hidden gems, and United Auto Workers golf property open for public play, Black Lake’s expansive grounds are equally as impressive as their 18 holes designed by Rees Jones.

“We also had a lot of people playing at Gaylord Golf Club, which is open to the public, and report they have the most perfect greens and putting conditions on any we have here. There are so many great choices in the Gaylord area this year.”

For those seeking a close walk from their room to the greens, Garland Lodge and Golf Resort and Black Lake Golf Club serve up resort accommodations and championship golf. Garland’s four courses weave their way through meadows, hard-

Partnering with these stellar resort properties are more stand-alone courses which offer immaculate greens, superior dining and friendly service.

Among the Gaylord Golf Mecca’s members are Indian River Golf Club and Lakes of the North Golf Course which recently celebrated 100 years of service. Both standalone courses offer an excellent opportunity to enjoy the extra hours from daylight savings time and get in another round before the sun sets.

Big-game golf hunters still come to Michigan to immediately seek out Treetops Resort to play the scenic Robert Trent Jones Sr. Masterpiece course, which was one of his last designs in 1987 and helped coin the resort’s name.

From the popular par-3 No. 6 hole tee, your golf ball drops 180 feet, and your view stretches for over 40 miles and hundreds of trees.

Otsego Resort
Gaylord Golf Club

It’s built close to the clubhouse and lodging and makes a perfect headquarters for your Gaylord golf quest.

Famed designer Tom Fazio has also made his mark on the Gaylord Golf Mecca. His work at Treetops is the only Fazio design in Michigan, called Fazio Premier. It is stunning and designed with the resort golfer in mind, for fun and challenge all at the same time.

Another big-game and big-name course is the Smith Signature, which was designed by renowned swing coach Rick Smith, a local native. It combines the strong features of golf found in Ireland.

Michaywe Pines Golf Course is the host to the Golf Association of Michigan’s annual qualifiers and a top course in the Gaylord golf empire. A popular add-on for any golf package in the Mecca is the beloved Threetops Par-3 course at Treetops, home of the former ESPN Par-3 Shootout and often tagged the No. 1 par-3 course in America.

The Shootout helped put the region on the national map, featuring superstars Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples and Jack Nicklaus over the years, and scored its biggest ESPN national replays when Lee Trevino aced the seventh hole in 2007. It’s regarded as the richest payday ever for a single shot – a cool $1 million. A plaque commemorating the moment sits on the tee and awaits golfers hoping to match the big skin or recreate some Texas Trevino magic.

Of course all that great golf and views can make a person powerful hungry. There are plenty of great places to dine in Gaylord, 5 minutes from the Treetops Masterpiece course. Choices range from

thick steaks and plenty of liquid to wash them down with to Italian, German and Michigan native food, or a good chicken fried steak to make you feel right at home. If you want to stay on property, almost all of the resorts provide a hearty breakfast, great sports bars and fantastic nearby dining to choose from.

If you need to check off all the ingredients to what makes a good summer golfing escape, then Gaylord and its direct flights from Texas’ biggest cities can fill your link travel requirements.

A Winning Combination: Exploring Coushatta Casino Resort in Louisiana

In the heart of Louisiana lies Coushatta Casino Resort, a destination that promises excitement, luxury accommodations, and a serene golfing experience. Recently, my wife Ava and I embarked on a journey to this haven of entertainment, where we discovered a seamless fusion of our love for golf and gambling.

Our adventure commenced with a warm reception at Coushatta Casino Resort. The accommodation exceeded our expectations, providing a perfect blend of comfort and elegance. The spacious rooms boasted modern amenities, ensuring a restful night’s sleep after a day filled with exhilaration.

However, it was the golf course that truly captivated us. Designed to challenge

seasoned golfers while enchanting novices with its natural beauty, the course at Coushatta offered an idyllic setting for our golfing expedition. As Ava and I traversed

the manicured fairways, we were greeted by breathtaking views at every turn. Yet, what truly impressed us were the 19th and 20th holes – a golfer’s oasis. Following a round of invigorating golf, these holes provided a perfect retreat to unwind and relish the day’s triumphs and near misses. Amidst picturesque surroundings, the 19th hole island green par 3 was designed to clear up any outstanding bets accumulated on the course while the 20th hole (clubhouse) offered

a tranquil ambiance to enjoy refreshing beverages and delectable food and snacks, with its inviting atmosphere, encouraging us to linger and savor the camaraderie of fellow golf enthusiasts.

Of course, no visit to Coushatta would be complete without immersing oneself in the thrill of its renowned casino. “The Battlefield” Par 3 Golf Course at Shangri-La Named “Best New Attraction in Oklahoma!”

The Battlefield Par 3 Golf Course at Shangri-La was awarded the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association’s coveted RedBud Award as the “Best New Attraction in Oklahoma in 2023.” The award was presented to Shangri-La representatives at the OTIA RedBud Award ceremonies at The Oklahoma Tourism Conference in Edmond, OK Tuesday, June 11, 2024.

The RedBud Awards represent the highest honor in the tourism industry in Okla-

homa. Shangri-La, located on northeastern Oklahoma’s Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees, had previously been honored as “Best Lodging in Oklahoma” in 2018 and the resort was named “Best Attraction in Oklahoma” in 2022. The Anchor Activity Park at ShangriLa, which opened in June 2021, was named “Best New Attraction” by OTIA at the 2023 Awards Banquet.

Neighbors, and Head Golf Professional at The Battlefield Bradley Jumper were joined by Director of Sales Dana Able. Director of Communications Mike Williams, and Grove Area Chamber of Commerce Amanda Davis to accept the honor which was presented by Oklahoma Travel Industry Association President & CEO James Leewright and Oklahoma Tourism & Recreation Director Shelley Zumwalt.

The Battlefield is not your typical par 3 course. The terrain is rugged – like a World War II battlefield set in a wooded area with dramatic elevation changes. The facility has its own clubhouse and turn house concessions and golf carts, as well as a short warm-up facility and an expansive putting green. The full practice facility and driving range remain adjacent to the main Shangri-La club house.

Designed by architects Tom Clark and Kevin Atkinson, with building designs by Mark Thomas, The Battlefield features Bermuda grass fairways and Bent Grass greens, just like the 27-hole Championship course at Shangri-La. Although the course can be walked, golfers who choose that method of play may want to make sure they’re in good shape due to dramatic elevation changes. From beginning to end, the 3,000-yard course features a 100-foot change in elevation as the course winds from hilltop to the bank of Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees. With

multiple tee boxes like the Championship course, difficulty of the course will vary depending on the tee boxes chosen by players.

“The Battlefield is a beautiful, captivating, and purposefully designed short course like no other,” says PGA Director of Golf Ryan Snyder. “It’s an endlessly fun and engaging experience for golfers of every skill level that also recognizes our brave military personnel, with special commemorations to World War II veterans on every hole. The course has an energy and excitement that, along with our renovated, world-class 27-hole championship course, elevates the golf experience at Shangri-La into the ‘Must Play’ category among the nation’s destination resorts.”

This enjoyable, accessible par-54 course which features holes from 110 to 245 yards, joins the acclaimed 27 championship holes at Shangri-La, the Legends, Heritage and Champions courses (framed elegantly on the shores of the expansive Grand Lake O’ The Cherokees) to present an extraordinary 45-hole golfer’s paradise that buddies’ trip groups and golf aficionados from all over the country will want to add to their bucket list.

The Battlefield is open six days a week (closed Wednesdays). The Championship Course at Shangri-La is open for play seven days a week. For additional information, access the Shangri-La website at www.shangrilaok.com.

Hit a Hole in One on the Bend

The newly renovated Cypress Bend Resort golf course is a can’t-miss destination for golf lovers. Strategically redesigned by award-winning architect Jeff Blume, the stunning 18-hole championship course is the crown jewel of the Audubon Golf Trail.

But wait, there’s more. From nature trails to fishing excursions, get the full outdoorsman’s experience when you stay at Cypress Bend Resort.

Lago Vista Golf Course is staking its claim as one of the area’s best municipal tracks

There’s changes and improvements aplenty on display at Lago Vista Golf Course, the underrated Hill Country gem on the northern banks of Lake Travis just a 40-minute drive from downtown Austin.

Under the direction of new PGA Quarter Century Member Greg Saul, who’s earned his chops in the golf business at municipal and high-end public courses and prestigious private clubs in both Oklahoma and Texas, Lago Vista GC is transitioning from a

facility with a lot of potential to one that is realizing those aspirations.

Basic conditioning and maintenance practices (and plenty of help from Mother Nature in the form of a wet winter and spring) have increased Lago Vista GC’s appeal and playability and golfers around the area have been returning in droves to play the 6,455- yard gem.

The city of Lago Vista has outlined a plan that will completely replace the course’s irrigation system, with imple-

mentation set to begin at the first of the year and be completed by 2026. In the meantime, the course’s maintenance crew have resurfaced the putting surfaces on holes 13 and 18 and will next tackle the greens at Nos. 5, 6 and 7.

“The course is night and day better now that it was last summer,” Saul said. “It’s been the little things that have made the difference – the attention to detail from the time our golfers drive up to the course to when they have finished their post-round beverage.

“We know we are in a competition with other courses for the area’s players and I guarantee that if golfers will come out here and see our course now, they will be pleasantly surprised.

Saul said the course’s back nine –which finishes at a par 3 next to the clubhouse on the banks of Lake Travis –have vastly improved. And things are only going to get better.

You can play Lago Vista Golf Course for as little as $30 (with a cart) and the most it will cost golfers is $54 for prime weekend tee times. Kids play free when they are accompanied by a paying adult and there are special rates for seniors, military/first responders and twilight play.

So get on out to Lago Vista Golf Course and see how good the place is.

Blanco’s Rockin’ J Ranch thrives as Texas Hill Country success story

The Community has become one of region’s most desirable and most popular places to live and play.

you

Jyou know that it’s a place that dots all the i’s and crosses all the t’s as a private community that has a little bit of everything modern families demand and desire.

Over the past two decades the Rockin’ J Ranch community just south of Blanco, on the edge of the Hill Country, has grown from just a great idea to a neighborhood that’s become one of the most desirable and popular in the region.

While many other communities have felt the pinch of the recession and a slowdown in home sales and house building created by high interest rates, things

Jgoing strong as literally hundreds of homes are under construction in this community that has become the pacesetter for excellence in the Austin-San Antonio corridor.

Rockin’ J Ranch is a 1,064-acre luxury neighborhood of spectacular Hill Country homes and homesites set amongst rolling fields of flowers and native grasses and stands of oak and cedar trees. And at its centerpiece is one of the region’s most enjoyable and recognized golf courses –Vaaler Creek Golf Club, which continues to break records for rounds played and revenue in the latest golf boom.

“We have about 10 percent of our homesites still for sale, and many of them are lots on the golf course – which are among the best in the community,” said Ryan Brubaker, Rockin’ J Ranch’s sales manager. “We have seen little, if any, slowdown for our homesite sales. Many of our residents moved here to get away from the hectic pace of the city, and Rockin’ J Ranch fits that bill but still offers

Outdoor Recreation at its Best

amenities and conveniences that other rural neighborhoods don’t.”

Located less than an hour north of San Antonio and just a half-hour further drive from Austin, the community differentiates itself from the many others in the region. Its setting is bordered by sprawling, green-grassed ranches and provides a sense of isolation that’s becoming just a bit too scarce these days.

Rockin’ J Ranch was founded by Colonel Lee Roper, an El Paso businessman and 24-year Army veteran who was enthralled by the land that would become the community from Day 1 more the three

decades ago. There were 1,800 homesites plated for the neighborhood and all but about 100 have been sold since 2004 as Rockin’ J Ranch has grown up and grown out over the past 20-some years.

Roper and his staff have helped bring families to the region via dozens of successful projects through his company, Rinco of Texas, a firm that has been ultimately

responsible for developing more than 30 properties across the Hill Country.

One of the earmarks of Roper’s communities – including Rockin’ J Ranch – is its use of a centralized water and sewer systems rather than the well water and septic fields employed in the majority of other Hill Country developments. That matters because water is a precious resource and so scarce in the region, even more so now than when Rockin’ J Ranch first came on line.

The Colonel still offers in-house financing for his lots. Try to get that done at a local bank or a homebuilder in other communities.

“We still make deals on a handshake,” Brubaker said. “What Colonel Roper envisioned from the start has not waned and continues to grow. Everyone wants a little piece of the quality of life we have at Rockin’ J Ranch, and we try to help them.”

If you know, you know. If you want to learn more about Rockin’ J Ranch and Vaaler Creek Golf Club, head to Blanco and prepare to be entranced.

Angela Stanford Emerges Victorious in the Legends Division of the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open, while Maddie Szeryk wins the Championship Division

Thienna Huynh (a) earns Low Amateur Honor

Angela Stanford won the Ewing Automotive Group Legends of the LPGA Division at the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open after lengthy weather delays shortened the Championship from 54 to 36 holes for both the Legends and Championship Divisions on May 29-31, 2024.

Stanford carded rounds of 66-71–137, to finish the tournament at 7-under-par and win by a margin of four strokes.

With three holes to play, Stanford only had a one-stroke lead. “I purposely didn’t have my phone on and watch the leaderboard,” she said. Birdies on the final two holes were enough to get her back to the four-shot lead she began the day with. “I just tried to do my best down the stretch and thankfully it was enough.”

Speaking on the event and Grapevine Golf Course, Stanford said, “I liked it…it’s

Highland Pines Golf Club
Angela Stanford
Grapevine Golf Course

tricky, it seems like it’s open out there, but it’s really not. I was so happy to hear that we are here for a couple years. I’m thankful for this opportunity at home and to be at the Texas Women’s Open.”

This is the second year that Fin Ewing III and the Ewing Automotive Group have supported the Legends of the LPGA Division and made a separate $75,000 purse possible. “He loves golf and he loves women’s golf.We need more people like that in the world. I really appreciate Fin for everything that he does for golf in general and specifically women’s golf,” said Stanford about her relationship with Ewing. Stanford won $13,500 for her victory today. Both Ewing (2019) and Stanford (2020) are members of the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.

Maddie Szeryk claimed the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open championship division by one stroke at Grapevine Golf Course. Szeryk fired rounds of 6867–135 to finish the shortened tournament at 9-under-par.

Starting the second round two strokes off the lead and in the penultimate group, Szeryk knew she needed to get off to a quick start, and that she did. With two birdies in the first four holes and a chip-in eagle on the 9th green, Szeryk made the turn at

7-under-par, but was still two strokes back of Hailee Cooper.

In the final two holes, Szeryk gained a one-stroke lead, but failed to get up and down on the 17th and made bogey. Needing to birdie the par-5 18th hole to regain the lead, Szyerk hit a wedge shot to 10-feet and drained the birdie putt.

“I haven’t won in a long time, so it was great to be under the gun. A few mistakes here and there, but made a great birdie on the last hole to give myself a chance,” said Szeryk. “It’s my first big paycheck of the year.”

Szeryk, who is from Allen, made 20 starts on the LPGA Tour last season and made 10 cuts. She is currently ranked 300 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings. She earned $17,500, a record for the Texas Women’s Open.

Low Amateur Thienna Huynh (a) just completed her sophomore collegiate season. Carding rounds of 67-70–137, 7-under-par, Huynh (a) finished four strokes ahead of the next amateur and finished in fourth place for the overall Championship.

Speaking about why she chose to play in the Championship Huynh (a), a Georgia native said, “I have a lot of good friends in

Maddie Szeryk and Thienna Huynh

Texas and I hadn’t seen them in a while. I love coming to Texas.”

“The maintenance team did a really, really good job making sure that the golf course was in good shape, especially with the storms that came in.The greens were rolling really great. It was perfect out there.”

The Championship was shortened from 54 to 36 holes and no cut was made after battling weather all week in Grapevine, including a six-hour and 15-minute delay on Thursday, May 30.

The Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open featured a record total purse of $150,000 thanks to the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Ewing Automotive Group. $75,000 was designated for the 24-player Legends of the LPGA Division and the other $75,000 was for the 132-player Championship Division. The 2024 Championship was the first of three years that the Texas Women’s

Open will be conducted at Grapevine Golf Course.

Northern Texas PGA Foundation Awards

$731,500 in Scholarships

Scholarships Given Now Surpass $5 Million in Total

The Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA) Foundation is pleased to continue its charitable commitment to higher education by announcing our 2024 scholarship recipients. A record 87 high school seniors who will be attending college this fall have earned scholarships totaling $731,500 – the most ever awarded in a single year by the NTPGA Foundation.

This year, the NTPGA Foundation celebrates our newest recipients and the fact that since our scholarship program began, we have now awarded over five million dollars in scholarships!

The 2024 scholarship amounts vary from $ 2,500 to $20,000. Alan De La

Deloitte*, the Northern Texas PGA (NTPGA) and UnitedWay celebrated the eight recipients of this year’s Deloitte/NTPGA Fairway to Success scholarships

Torre, Amy Lopez, Olayinka Ojo, Jocelyn Owens, Briana Perez and Stephanie Rodriguez each received a $20,000 college scholarship, which are funded through donations from Deloitte partners, principals, managing directors and professionals in North Texas.

Additionally, two students were awarded a “last-dollar” full scholarship to two of the Foundation’s partner schools. University of North Texas at Dallas (UNT Dallas), awarded a full, four-year scholarship to Jada Cole. Daisy Mondragon was awarded a full, four-year scholarship in collaboration with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA).

Since 1983, the Northern Texas PGA Foundation has awarded $5.73 million in college scholarships to 841 deserving students. “I am thrilled and more so appreciative to surpass $5,000,000 in scholarships awarded this year. It is a lot of money and every dollar is for students pursuing higher education,” said Mark Harrison, Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Texas PGA. “We would not be able to continue and grow this program without the support of everyone who believes in our Foundation and our commitment to students’ higher education.Thank you to our supporters, and congratulations to the 87 students who received a scholarship this year. I know they all have a bright future ahead.”

This year, of the scholarships awarded, 62% were based on financial need, academic performance, extracurricular activities and community involvement, while 38% were awarded based on academic performance, extracurricular activities and community involvement.

NTPGA leaves no one behind with a variety of golf opportunities.

Founded in 1983, the nationally acclaimed NorthernTexas PGA Junior Golf Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organization, was rebranded in 2019 as the NorthernTexas PGA Foundation. The NorthernTexas PGA Foundation focuses on five pillars: junior golf, college scholarships, inclusion, internships and military & veterans.

Double Eagle aka Albatross

Not Once but Twice !

As a non-golfer, when I was first assigned this story, I had no real appreciation for the accomplishment of one of our resident golfers, Darlene Hensen. In fact, I had to do an internet search for the term double eagle (aka albatross = 3 shots under par). All of that changed when I learned how rare this shot is.What makes Darlene’s accomplishment even more remarkable, perhaps historic, is that she made two double eagles on two different Sun City courses within four days!

A 2004 Golf World article analyzed statistics for a double eagle in relation to hitting a hole-in-one and put the odds of a recreational golfer hitting a double eagle at 1,000,000 to 1. To put it in perspective, the publication estimated the odds of hitting a hole-in-one at 13,000 to 1. In practice,

during 21 years of the PGA Tour (19832003) there were 631 hole-in-one shots hit, but just 56 double eagles; in 66 years of the LPGA (1950-2016) there were only 36 double eagles made; in the history of The Masters (1934-2016) there were 27 holein-ones vs 4 double eagles and finally, from 1895-2015 the U.S. Open had 44 hole-inones and only 3 double eagles. Impressed? I sure am!

When I interviewed Darlene several weeks after her accomplishment, she was still letting the reality settle in. She began golfing somewhat seriously around 2010. After taking a few months off to heal from an injury suffered from falling off a ladder, she began regular play in 2012. Darlene credits her husband with getting her started by teaching her the game, and the WGA with her current level of play. “The WGA is a great organization,” explains Darlene. “It was a great thing for me to do. It sharpened my skills, taught me the

Darlene Hensen

rules and has a lot to do with improving my game. I also play with so many good, competent women. That pushes you to play better.”

So how did it happen? On the 12th hole of White Wing, Darlene was 160 yards out from the cup. She chose an Epic 7-wood. As Julie Greenberg, part of the foursome that day, explained: “It was a terrific drive, straight and over a tree.We couldn’t find the ball at first but after searching all over, found it in the cup. It was the most amazing, incredible shot I’ve ever seen, pro or amateur! She is so humble, one of the nicest women.”

Four days later, Darlene was playing the 7th hole at Legacy Hills with friends. At 135 yards out she chose a 7-iron Cobra S9. Resident Beth Ravine witnessed the shot: “It was a beautiful drive down the center, her second shot, blind up-hill and we couldn’t find the ball.We looked around and found it in the cup. I was surprised, but not surprised. It was pretty cool. It was the first one I’ve witnessed, and it was pretty awesome.”

Looking back, Darlene exhibits the humility mentioned by her friends: “It was pure luck. I chose the right club and the right time, but it is such a great feeling!”

After the first round, participants enjoyed a delightful dinner hosted by the club, featuring stunning views and exceptional cuisine. The Open Division saw a thrilling conclusion with Austin Wylie, Assistant Professional at Mac Wylie Golf Center, emerging as the champion following a four-hole suddendeath playoff against Corey Roberson, PGA Director of Golf at Cordillera Ranch.

The Southern Texas PGA REACH Foundation is continuing its success with a multitude of exciting announcements. Our championships are second to none, we are fiercely proud of our grow the game initiatives and impacting lives through golf.

The STPGA Junior Championship is the largest event for top junior golfers between ages 6 and 18 in the STPGA Junior Golf program. Over 200 juniors will be invited to participate in three days of fun activities. Juniors must compete in Summer Series events from May to July to accumulate points and qualify for

this Championship, the second of three Championships in the calendar year. The STPGA encourages every junior to register and play in as many tournaments as possible to qualify and looks forward to seeing you at the 2024 STPGA Junior Championship!

Many of our juniors have continued on to play golf at the collegiate level and our support as a Section will continue. Since its inception in 1999, our Scholarship Program has granted over 530 scholarships totaling more than $1,991,500 to deserving students, recognizing their achievements and character.

The PGA REACH Southern Texas Scholarship Program awarded $297,500 in scholarships to 60 junior golfers for the 2024-2025 academic year, an $87,000 increase from last year. “Another record year for the STPGA and we could not be happier for these deserving young men and women,” said Bryan Minnick, President of the Southern Texas PGA. “From fellow PGA of America Members supporting this program to other organizations involved with golf, I just want to say thank you!”

A significant contributor to this year’s

Darrick Dixon and Clayton Meyers

success was the Hannon Cup Association, which invested $110,000, resulting in 14 scholarships. The Association, led by PGA Members Steve Termeer and Brent Buckman, exemplifies community support for education. To celebrate the scholarship recipients, the STPGA hosted a Scholarship Luncheon this summer, providing an opportunity for winners to interact with trustees and acknowledge the impact of these scholarships on their lives and families.

In 2024, the Scholarship Program saw substantial growth with new contributions from various organizations. The Insperity Invitational invested $20,000, honoring recipients at a dinner with golf legends. Abraham Ancer’s $15,000 investment awarded three scholarships, highlighting a commitment to education and community. Additional contributions from Mark Duranski, BraeBurn Country Club, Judy and Palmer Moe, and the increased J.L. Lewis Scholarship also bolstered the

Scholarship Luncheon
Junior Championship

program. “Thank you to everyone that supports these scholarships,” said Thomas Hutton, Executive Director for the STPGA. “We have so many people involved in this program, and we could not be happier with this year’s outcome.”

As the Southern Texas PGA continues to make strides in supporting education through its robust Scholarship Program, it is equally committed to giving back to the community in other impactful ways. The STPGA’s dedication to fostering educational opportunities also highlights its commitment to enhancing the lives of Veterans through the PGA HOPE program. By offering programs that address both educational and therapeutic needs, the STPGA is making a comprehensive impact on the community it serves.

The Southern Texas PGA is excited to announce the inaugural STPGA HOPE Cup on August 24, 2024, at the Clubs of Kingwood - Lake Course in Kingwood, Texas. This event aims to celebrate and support PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), a program that introduces golf to Veterans to enhance their physical, mental, social, and emotional well-being. The tournament will feature a 9-hole scramble format, fostering camaraderie among teams composed of PGA HOPE instructors and their

graduates, followed by a dinner and awards ceremony. The Cimarron Hills Pro-Am has generously committed $10,000 to sponsor the event, aiding in the success and continued support of PGA HOPE programs in Southern Texas.

Proceeds from the STPGA HOPE Cup will benefit PGA HOPE Southern Texas programs, which provide free golf instruction, equipment, and playing opportunities for Veterans, including those with physical and cognitive disabilities. This event not only highlights the therapeutic benefits of golf but also builds a supportive community for Veterans.

“We are excited for a day of golf, gratitude, and giving back,” expressed Scott Archer, Assistant Executive Director of the Southern Texas PGA. “This event will be a celebration of all the hard work these PGA HOPE graduates have put into their golf game, as well as an opportunity to establish a community of support across Southern Texas.”

During his tenure, he grew the STPGA’s budget from $100,000 to over $4 million, established STPGA Scholarships awarding over $1 million, and built one of the most robust junior programs in the country. One of Ray’s biggest accomplishments was his work around the Texas Junior Golf Alliance. Ray’s idea was to create one membership for juniors to play either STPGA or NTPGA Junior Golf and receive a free membership to the Legends Junior Tour. This model continues to thrive today, with close to 100 2-Day Championships for the best junior golfers in Texas. Additionally, Ray was instrumental in reconstituting the Texas Golf Hall of Fame and a proponent of bringing the PGA of America Headquarters to Texas. Known as the “Head Pro of the STPGA,” he has mentored countless professionals and junior golfers. His legacy is marked by his dedication to growing the game and supporting the golf community.

REGISTRY OF HISTORIC COURSES

Royal Oaks Country Club (Dallas)

Royal Oaks Country Club, established in 1967 and managed by Todd Harbour, has a storied history beginning at Glen Lakes Country Club.

The club has remained true to the original layout and designs of Don January, Billy Martindale, and J. Press Maxwell, who hailed from a prestigious lineage of course architects. Royal Oaks boasts a pedigree that includes influences from Southern Hills and Augusta National. Despite initial design challenges, the course opened in 1969 and has continually evolved, with notable redesigns by D.A. Weibring and Chet Williams.

The club underwent a significant renovation in 2023, updating irrigation and replanting fairways, greens, and roughs. Renowned for nurturing talent,

Royal Oaks is home to top golfers like Scottie Scheffler, Justin Leonard and Ryan Palmer and has been shaped by Pro Emeritus Randy Smith’s 46-year legacy. Smith’s dedication has fostered countless junior golfers who have achieved collegiate and professional success. With its rich history, commitment to junior golf, and welcoming environment, Royal Oaks remains a vibrant and beloved community.

The induction ceremony is open to the public, and tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available. For more information and to purchase tickets, please visit 2024 Gathering of Eagles Info,Tickets & Sponsorships.
